Humanity and Nature in ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’

Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya Calrk in an upcoming film adaptation

Although it was hard to separate the author from their art, especially with the close relation of controversy being that ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ is a murder mystery, I cannot lie and say that this book did not keep me on edge late at night and had me absolutely astonished and mouth gaping by the end.

FAMILY

The story follows Kya, referred to as the Marsh Girl in town, who lives in an old shack by herself, left and abandoned by her family one by one. Having only spent a few pages with Kya, Owens was already able to have me heartbroken and attached to the love and siblinghood the protagonist eventually came to lose.

But if Ma came back now when Pa was acting decent, maybe they could start over.

Though already knowing that everything would eventually crumble at some point, the way her father had been with her for the short time after all her siblings and mother left was something I couldn’t help but hold on to and hope so much would stay. But, of course, loss continues to prevail in life.

NATURE

I have found what I might call the greatest descriptions of nature and its contrast and similarities to humanity in this book. It showcased how both living beings manage to survive in the world with each other as their only companion.

Tate idled back, watching as Kya and Chase spun around each other in the blue-gray waves, in ever-smaller circles like eagles courting in the sky.

You never really know how beautiful a fair description of the world around us can enhance a story until you read a book written by a naturalist with a Ph.D. in Animal Behavior. Reading this book, I was fully immersed in the life Kya lived and felt as if I was there with her and finished with a new view of the world; a new sense of appreciation for its beauty and the way it functions in similar ways to humans.

As she pushed off, she knew no one would ever see this sandbar again.

That line made me think of all the people there are in the world and all the different lives they live and the sights they see from the moment they wake to their last breath. You could see a person in the street, adore the way they smile at a cat passing by, and never see them again or be able to tell them of the beautiful sight you’ve witnessed.

ENDING

The way the story was set up and led to the trial and final verdict, you were made to think that something was wrong—that another person had murdered Chase Andrews and it certainly would not have been Miss Kya Clark. After all the pages that unraveled Kya’s life, I, as a reader, if not felt I was with her, felt I was her and that I, myself, was the one accused of murder.

This book had left me with chills running down my spine, to think that a person I had grown attached to was not fully who I saw them be. To think that I didn’t know myself.

Come Little Children

----

Lilia Vanrouge was never hateful towards humans. He didn't care about them or only help ones he trust.

It was indeed rare that he would help a human by pure will and thought. Many guards know that fact.

So it was surprisingly that he saved a human when attacked by the Tree Golems, who were not prone to visitors.

The human was simply walking around, enjoying the scenery, as they explained. However they accidentally picked a flower from a Tree Golem and Lilia was luckily nearby to save him.

Turns out the human was King Daniel Delia, of the nearby kingdom. He came over to find the legendary fairies and also guest to invite over as his wife was expecting and once his baby was born, they'll do a celebration.

"Why ask the legendary fairies?" Lilia asked, drawing his sword back. "They would come naturally as they do for even royal child."

"Yes, but my wife was worried they would not. It was a thought she couldn't get our of her head. I have tried but coming here was a an option."

It was enough to convince Lilia to bring to the 7 legendary fairies, and by the King's extension, Lilia.

"Please come along as well," he begged to Lilia. "You have saved me from the unmerciful and now I shall do what it takes to repay you."

Lilia was amused and came as he didn't want to hurt the King's feels and he knew it was just simple gratitude.

When he arrived, he was in for a shock.

The night previous, the queen, Queen Serena, actually has twins, both boys. Though one was odd to others and didn't exactly look like the king and queen, but Lilia digresses.

He knew the standard gifts: beauty, wit, grace, dance, song, and goodness. As a fae, it was the standard for a baby.

Before the seventh, The Mistress came by, of course, aggravated that she was not invited, as Lilia suspected, curse the babies.

"The Twins will have until their 18th birthday, for when they see a spinning wheel, they shall prick their fingers and will die!"

Though the curse was surprising to Lilia, he never said anything. He knew if he would, he would've have been lectured on intrusive behavior.

But she has added something to add some drama to the celebration.

"Oh, but I am not done, my dear Daniel. As my former lover, I would propose a arrangement," she stated, looking at the twins. "One child shall be brought to The Enchanted Woods as an offering, and if you do, I will end the curse. I will give till tomorrow night to choose."

With that she left, everyone was silent and the royal family were stunned that the Mistress even knew what they were planning.

The Seventh fairy, in fear looked over to the king and queen.

"Your Majesties," he started,"I can not get rid of it, but I can protect the princes from certain death...well, I can only do one."

"Only one!?" Daniel gasped. "Must you?" He said in complete sorrow.

Serena carefully got up and went by to the cribs and was silently until she picked up one, a baby in a blue blanket.

"Cure Amour, please." She whispered, walking towards the Seventh Fairy.

Lilia took a good look.

Amour had his mother's light locks and seemingly their father's violet eyes, fair skin and was cute for a small child.

When the fairy have his gift, Lilia walks towards the second crib. He sees a sleeping child.

The child was definitely different from his twin. His hair was pure white, and his was more paler, like he was never in sunlight.

Lilia looks around before he began to whisper his gift towards him.

"Dear Child, may I lift the curse that has befell onto you. And as an additional feat, as you may remain kind, you will also be given bravery. You will learn to help others in need with a smile and sword. Though it may sound silly but I see potential for you."

Violet eyes need up with magenta as the baby woke and yawn. The baby gazes to Lilia and gives him a small smile.

"Goodbye, sweet child." Lilia walks over to the others.

"Thank you," Serena cried, holding Amour close. "Thank you."

"Of course, your highness."

"Now, we shall celebrate!"

"I do have a question, if I may, your highness." Lilia said, causing eyes on him. "We heard the name of Amour, but what is the name of the other child?"

Everyone awaited but silence fill the throne room, King Daniel and Queen Serena could not give an answer.

"Well, since he was a surprise, he was not given one in time for the celebration." Serena explained, looking at Lilia with a face of embarrassment.

"Understandable, your highness," Lilia chuckles. "When the time does come, you can get us the name."

The celebration went but Lilia noticed how the queen gave him glares throughout it all and only cradled Amour.

Lilia stayed by the second one as many came and congratulated Amour.

He never felt something so... disgusted. He fought despicable enemies with absolute no morals but he never thought a party could bring this such emotion in him.

He looks over as the baby slept again, softly snoring. He was clearly oblivious on how his future may seem to be from this party.

"You are not appreciated, and I can see it." Lilia said to the child. "I never thought humans could do such a thing to an infant, let alone a royal one."

He watched as the dawn became darker, and many have left.

"Thank you for coming, Lilia." King Daniel thanked him with a smile. "Is there anything I can do?"

"I do," Lilia gets up, carefully lifted his leg,"I have hurt myself during the celebration, and since the Enchanted Woods are quite far, I feel like I should stay the night and leave in the morning."

Serena had a face of pure hatred as when the King agreed and helped Lilia to a guest room.

And Lilia could only think,'Works every time."

The night approach with stars that glow bright and Lilia was returning from the kitchen to get something to eat.

"I will not!" He heard Daniel scream.

Lilia, simply out of pure curiosity, walked by a looked through the peak of their bedroom.

"I will not send our child to the woodlands, not now, not ever!"

"You are a fool to see that this child is a curse upon our family and the years ahead!" Serena cried, looking down at the sleeping child in disgust. "The Sorcerer says that having twins is a bad omen, that means we have been cursed!"

"My love, you are being absolutely insane! Mind you, that you have went to the most craziest sorcerer of all the land because you never wanted to visit special doctors."

Lilia stayed silent as he simply saw red towards the queen.

How could one simply abandoned a child for a stupid reason? Especially one who was simply sleeping while the other cried and sobbed.

Lilia let out a wicked smirk as he walks away from the room. He now knows what his plan was..

Lilia held the little baby in his arms as he walks down the dark hallway, hoping to make a silence escape.

But, like a baby should, he started to whine, tears forming.

Lilia shushed him softly and started to sing a lullaby.

I'll take thee away

Into a land of enchantment

The time's come to play

Here in my garden of magic

The baby smiles and Lilia holds him close.

Lilia continued, watching guards struggling to stay awake.

Follow sweet children

I'll show thee the way

Through all the pain

And the sorrows

Weep not poor children

For life is this way

Murdering beauty and passions

From a distance, he heard the queen scream in terror, as now she noticed the disappearance of the child.

Lilia saw as guards were immediately altered and ran around the castle.

Hush now dear children

It must be this way

Too weary of life

And deceptions

Rest now my children

For soon we'll away

Into the calm and the quiet

-------

Lilia was by the entrance, opening the doors.

"There he is!!" Called a guard.

The King, with the guards behind him, ran as Lilia walks away from the castle, holding the child close.

"Lilia!" Ordered the King. "Give back my child! And maybe I will go easy on you!!"

Lilia lets out a scoff."Your child? The child that you barely have a name to? A child that your wife things is a bad omen and a curse? I do not think so."

As magic surrounds Lilia, he looks back at the King.

"Tell the queen this," he started,"that she got what she wanted as the child we stay in the Enchanted Woods, with all the love be will have, and not in a disgusting place where parents wouldn't even love and name him. And I will alert the Tree Golems about you so if you do try to arrive... prepared for a fight."

He teleported back to his home, seeing that the baby was asleep once.

With a smile, he takes out an old crib and carefully puts the baby in it. He pats his chest carefully and smiles.

The time's come to play

Here in my garden of shadows

As he lays by the crib, he looks over.

"Good night, Silver," he cooed,"may my gift serve you well...as your new father, I promise you that every day you will forever be loved by those you met, even if it may take a while...I promise you, my son."

Natural Scenes (Where The Crawdads Sing)

I recently finished reading Where The Crawdads Sing and I liked it so much. It just vibed with me in a special way. It was probably all the natural description in the book hehe. Really liked the movie too back when I watched it.

Just!!! Every scene described I was like NATURE!! So here ya go, a bunch of natural scenes. Btw, these are actually pretty small so that's why they don't have a lot of detail. They're little paintings ✨

KISSING AN EX // DANIEL RICCIARDO

There’s a voice in the back of your head that’s telling you this a really, really bad idea. Danny is only in town for the holidays, he’s leaving tomorrow. Back to Monaco or Los Angeles or wherever he spends his time now. He’s going to leave, which is why the two of you had broken up in the first place.

Right now, though, it’s New Year’s, the early seconds of January 1st, and he’s here. His hands are on your hips, his lips are on yours. You’re breaking at least three of your resolutions.

Don’t be stupid

Meet a guy who will settle down

But there’s tequila in your veins, and adrenaline, too. And god, he knows you so well, better than anyone, knows just what makes you tick. He knows that when he swipes his tongue against your lips, you’ll open up for him. He knows that his hand knitted in your hair, tugging, will have you melting into a puddle. And most of all, he knows you can’t resist him.

It’s when he bites your jaw- actually bites you, you’re worried there might be teeth marks tomorrow- that you realize you’re a goner. Your friends are in the bar, none the wiser. You’re in a back corner of the hallway. His hips are pressing into yours.

“My hotel’s a block away,” he says.

“This is such a bad idea,” you finally voice out loud.

Which, really, is sort of unfair for you to say. You’re the one who grabbed his hand and pulled him back here in the first place. Danny doesn’t seem to care.

He just groans and nods, muffles an “mhmm,” into your neck. “Missed you, though. We could start the year off right.”

You let your head fall back and stare at the ceiling. To your left is the hallway back to the bar. Find your friends, have a couple more drinks, go home alone. Wake up mostly happy tomorrow. To the right, the back exit. Danny’s hotel room. Decisions, decisions.

He sucks a mark onto your collarbone. Distantly, you think, if you go back to the bar now, your friends will all know. So really, you might as well say fuck it. Might as well take what he’s offering.

You hook your fingers in his belt loops. “Okay,” you agree, hating how desperate it sounds. “Yeah, please.”

He pulls away, and the smirk on his face both irritates you to no end and sends a spark down your spine. “That’s my girl.”

You want to remind him that you’re not his anything. That you’re done, over with, so through with Daniel Ricciardo that it’s not even funny. But one of his hands is on your ass, now, and the other one is inching slowly up your side. Suddenly, you can’t find the words to tell him off. All you can do is kiss the stupid smirk off his face.

You leave the bar through the back door with his arm around your waist, his hand in your back pocket. You’ll just start your resolutions on January 2nd instead.

Alright I got a weird AU idea not sure what to call it but it involves one of our favorite things ✨pregnant dream✨

So Dream decides he would like to retire and become an immortal human like Hob. one problem though, he’s got no heir to the dreaming and he can’t use Daniel (for plot reasons idk) so Hob hearing “heirs” has something light up in his old peasant brain and he’s like “what if we make em the old fashion way?” Dream agrees under the condition that if the child is not fit to usher the dreaming they will keep having children until one of them is ready and willing.

The first child is Determination of the Endless (I mean he’s Hob’s kid after all) they also give their children human names because they will spend about equal amounts of time in the waking as the dreaming (and Dante looks less suspicious on a birth name than Determination does) the next kid is Deception of the Endless (hob blames his mercenary days for that one) he’s a really sweet kid though, they name him Dimitri, (might as well stick to a theme at this point) they learn that the children have developed their own realms albeit smaller than their older Endless family members. Then something happens. Delight is born, this reassures them that a new being can take on an old endless moniker and Auntie Delirium is happy to show Delia (Delight) the ropes. They get another sweet docile baby girl and are surprised to learn she’s Destruction (it makes more sense in her toddler years) her name is Daphne. Than Hope is born. (This is ENTIRELY Hob’s Fault) Hob is a little confused as to why she is the only endless without a D at the start of her function. Then it’s time to name her.

“I mean we could just call her Hope, it’s a human girl’s name and it would be one less name to remember.” Hob chirps cuddled up with dream and the new baby who is the spitting image of Hob.

“Hmmm” Dream rumbles.

“I was thinking she doesn’t need to follow the tradition of a D human name.” He says shifting closer to Hob.

“Really? Do you have any suggestions?”

Dream hums in response like he hasn’t been planning this for the past nine months.

“I was considering perhaps…Roberta?”

Hob gasps softly. “Really, you want to name one of the little ones after me?”

“Look at her, she has your light, Hob”

Hob and Roberta become thick as thieves after that. A nearly inseparable father-daughter duo. Hob and Rob (although she prefers Robbie)

Then the sixth baby arrives, Dante is in his twenties at this point, (they had the kids farther apart so each of them could get proper attention but still close enough for a proper sibling bond)

This baby to everyone’s shock is Dream of the Endless, at least dream of the endless jr.

“Hob!” Dream calls from his bed.

“Yes darling?” Hob immediately runs into the room, he’s at dreams beck and call (I mean he ALWAYS is but especially after a new baby is born)

“What’s wrong? Is everything alright?”

Dream beckons for Hob to climb into bed with him and hands him the baby. He’s an absolute carbon copy of dream.

“Oh, he looks just like his father,”

“That means he’ll have the attitude of his Papa” Dream retorts.

Hob sticks his tongue out, “you love me.”

“Now what’s this one’s function?”

“Dream,”

Hob stares at his husband in awe, “you mean this is it? You’ve got a proper heir now? Aw, I was hoping to at least get four more hoblings out of you,”

Dream snickers, “just because I have an heir doesn’t mean I want to stop having children, Hob Gadling,”

Hob lights up, “you mean it?”

Dream nods, “besides it’s quite odd to only have six new endless, it should be seven like the original,”

“Seven? I can do that!”

They nickname the baby Drowsy of the Endless so no one gets confused, his human name is Dorian.

“No Dream I’m not putting Morpheus the second on a birth certificate that’ll get us flagged for sure”

The final child, the seventh endless is…

“Danger”

“You’re kidding,”

“No this child is Danger of the Endless”

“You just ran out of D words tell me his real function you git,”

“This is your son, Danger, Hob Gadling”

Hob sighs, “We just got all of Destruction’s stuff cleaned up, you’re telling me I have to parent a toddler whose natural tendency is towards danger?” Hob groans.

“Isn’t that all toddlers?” Dream smirks as Hob buries his face in his hands.

They name him Damien and he is a proper little hellion but the perfect edition to their little family and the next generation of Endless.

I just think the giant family dynamic is fun. I’d write a fic but I’m retired from fanfic writing. Thought I’d drop this off as an another Hob and Dream have a large family au.

The Hoblings 😭😭 I'm absolutely in love with this whole au!!! I love the idea of a new generation of Endless, its so lovely.

Imagine their interactions with Dream's siblings! Ollie would be so good with the new Destruction and Danger, and Desire would have great fun with Deception. I bet Delirium would be so overjoyed to meet the new Delight. It takes a village to raise a child and it will certainly take the whole family to raise a gaggle of half human, half Endless kiddos.

Dream and Hob are wonderful parents, which is to say - they fuck up a lot and the house is always a mess, but they love their kids so fiercely. Hob and Roberta and Determination are an absolute disaster trio. Dream and little Drowsy spend most of their time silently judging the shenanigans.

I just love the idea of the new generation of Endless getting this loving, amazing childhood that Dream and his siblings never really had. Of course things aren't perfect, but there's so much love in the house. Hob is so proud of Dream and their kids, and he feels so grateful to get this second chance at a family. Watching their children grow and become the best versions of themselves is a reward he knows he doesn't deserve, but he's endlessly thankful to the universe anyway <3

Theory: Root is alive

The Machine faked Root's death, knowing it was the only way to protect Root and motivate Finch to do what was needed to defeat Samaritan.

5x10

The Machine is unable to see the sniper because Samaritan's operatives work in the shadows, but sees Root get shot and sends the police to their location, as it is the fastest way to get medical attention for Root and Finch into custody where Samaritan would be less likely to have another opportunity to target him.

Root is then taken to hospital where Dr Madeleine Enright performs surgery to save her. The Machine summoned her because She needed a skilled surgeon who was trustworthy and wouldn't ask too many questions, and it is mentioned in 4x13 that Dr Enright is among the past numbers who have been helping the team ("Dr. Enright is keeping an eye on Delia at the safe house.").

Once Root is stable, this is the point where the Machine decides to fake her death. As she is injured, Root wouldn't be able to defend herself when Samaritan comes to finish the job, so her only chance is for the Machine to make sure they aren't looking for her. Or rather, they aren't looking for her alive.

Dr Enright injects her with aconite (like Shaw in 2x16) to make her appear deceased long enough to be pronounced dead and for Fusco to identify her body as a Jane Doe, then revives her with atropine.

Meanwhile, the Machine had also summoned Dr Farouk Madani, another previous ally of the team who used to work in a morgue and still owes Finch a favor as mentioned in 3x05. He locates a body matching Root's description and handles the necessary paperwork. And Dr Carr, the otolaryngologist who gave Root her cochlear implant in 3x17, removes her implant and puts it in the new body (more on this later), which is then sent to be buried in Root's place.

During the chaos of inmates being freed at the prison, Daizo, Jason and Daniel are able to get Root out of the hospital and go into hiding. The Machine chose them for this task because they were shielded from Samaritan at the end of season 3, giving them more room to maneuver freely, and Root already knows and trusts them.

The reason the Machine doesn't tell the team about faking Root's death is because Samaritan has eyes everywhere and She can't risk them finding out. She also heard Finch and Root's conversations about him needing to take a more active role in the fight against Samaritan and all the people he's lost, and knows that having him believe he's lost another friend is the only way to push him into doing what it takes to win the war.

The Machine then chooses to use Root's voice for multiple reasons: 1) to sell the story that Root is really dead. 2) She needs to be able to communicate clearly and quickly so Her usual spliced-together recordings wouldn't work. 3) This is the first time She will have prolonged contact with someone other than Root and She is on her own, so using Root's voice is a way to have part of Her interface with Her still.

When the Machine calls Finch from the hospital, he asks, "Root?". The Machine replies, "No, Harold. I chose a voice." She does not tell him Root is dead, but rather allows him to come to that conclusion based on the state in which he last saw her and the fact that She is now using her voice.

When the Machine talks to Finch about Root being dead, this is the only time She uses a name Root no longer identifies with. Therefore, when She says "I watched her die 12,483 times in the seconds before she expired. I couldn't save her, but I kept trying.", She is actually talking about accessing old footage of young!Root, watching her become the Root we know and running simulations to see whether things could have happened differently ("You taught me to see everything, see everyone, and I do. But I see thousands of versions of them: what they were, what they are, what they could be."). The Machine couldn't save her because this happened before She was built.

Much like how She went behind the team's back to protect Root by faking her death with the help of past numbers, in this episode the Machine goes behind the team's back to protect Reese by giving his number to the DC Team made up of past numbers.

5x12

The Machine says, "You know I can't lie to you, Harold." As we've seen, She can withhold information or choose to phrase things a particular way, but can't say an outright lie. At no point does she ever explicitly say Root is dead.

The Machine also says that in a world where She didn't exist, Shaw "never would have met Root." Finch adds, "Or lost her." The Machine does not address this comment at all.

5x13

When Shaw visits Root's grave and discovers the soil disturbed, the Machine comments that it "looks like they dug her up. Guessing they got to her cochlear implant. I should have had her cremated, but I just didn't have the heart. My bad." The Machine is only stating what it 'looks like', not what actually happened. And it is very suspicious that the Machine, who was created to predict human behavior and watched Samaritan try to cut the cochlear implant out of Root's head while she was alive, would fail to predict them going grave robbing for it.

Unless, after deciding to fake Root's death, She knew they wouldn't stop until they found it so lets them have it on Her terms. (As previously mentioned, the cochlear implant had been inserted into a body matching Root's description that was buried in her place. Having her cremated, and by extension destroying the cochlear implant beyond use, would have prevented an innocent person's body from being desecrated, but She couldn't give up a chance to defeat Samaritan.)

Once Samaritan scans the implant to access the location data, the Machine is also able to access more information on Samaritan which She then integrates into the copy of Her core code made by Shaw. This, along with the greater defensive capabilities created by Root and activated by Finch, allows her to beat Samaritan in the satellite, when She couldn't win any of the simulated fights.

The Machine knew that this would lead them to the team's frequent locations, so She arranges to protect them by stationing a sniper near the precinct ("It seems Thornhill Industries has been on a hiring spree.") and instructing Shaw to blow a hole in the wall of the subway station that allows them to escape.

Later, when Shaw asks "Is this the guy who killed you? Killed her, I mean.", the Machine changes the subject. This is because She can't lie and couldn't risk telling the truth when Samaritan might find out. Although they don't have much time, it wouldn't have taken long to confirm what Shaw already suspects and she has never been the type to let a desire for revenge interfere with completing the mission since "a good soldier does both" (2x16).

When the Machine directs Finch onto the rooftop, he asks, "Wait, are you sure this is the right place?" and She replies, "Yes. This is where you're supposed to be." It is then revealed that She secretly made a deal with Reese allowing him to sacrifice himself in Finch's place. This shows once again that She will go behind Her assets' backs to protect them and uses careful phrasing to misdirect them without lying.

After defeating Samaritan, the duplicate Machine downloads Herself to the subway station computers and declares 'mission unknown. Awaiting instructions…'. The message left by Her predecessor then begins playing and tells Her about Her assets ("let me tell you who we were") and Her mission ("let me tell you who you are").

As the next scene is Her calling the payphone by Shaw, She must have been given instructions to contact any surviving assets. Shaw answers and it is unlikely the Machine gives her a new number, because She had only just gotten back online and the last time She was reduced to Her core code in order to fit in the briefcase, it took Her a while to start operating normally. We also see that She only begins to scan the crowd after Shaw hangs up.

It can't be Her signature 'can you hear me?' because Shaw doesn't reply. Instead, it must be a message Her predecessor told Her to relay - that She survived, Samaritan is gone for good and it's time to get back to work, followed by a set of coordinates that lead to Root's location as she is both a surviving asset and someone who can help Her get back up and running.

It is doubtful the Machine tells Shaw Root is alive in that moment, because she would have reacted with more shock and betrayal than we saw, and likely demanded an explanation immediately. Instead, she is smiling because they won the war and she can continue saving people.

Shaw then goes to the location, which is a new safehouse where Daizo, Jason and Daniel have been looking after Root, who is still unconscious but recovering. The building has been set up as their new base of operations, since the subway was somewhat destroyed during the final battle.

When Root soon wakes up, she and Shaw are very happy to be reunited and promise never to leave each other again. The Machine moves Herself to the computer equipment in the new safehouse and Root helps Her get recalibrated, as we saw in 5x02 and the flashbacks in 4x05. "There we go. Now, can you see me? Excellent. Next question, who am I? That's my girl." Root becomes both Admin and Analog Interface and Shaw is the Primary Asset.

Together, Root, Shaw, the Machine and Bear get back to working the numbers, with help from their friends and allies.
