Duck Musings - Why kill off Hortense?
An interesting question popped into my mind recently. It was revealed not too long ago that in the DuckTales 2017 verse, Donald’s and Della’s parents, Hortense McDuck and Quackmore Duck, were actually still alive, even though it has been commonly accepted amongst comic fans that it was safe to assume that the two were dead. Which does beg the question, if Hortense is the youngest of the McDuck children, and both Scrooge and Matilda are alive in the comics, why do we kill off Hortense?
Well the easy answer is that A) it explains why she’s never seen and why it appears that Donald was raised by Grandma Duck and B) fits in with the whole dead Disney Moms cliché. Of course we never get much confirmation that Donald’s parents are dead, but the idea fits in.
However, I think that’s only the surface answer, and by God, if I can overthink something about the Duck Comics, I’m going to overthink it.
Something I find a lot of Duck fans really enjoy, is the tragedy of the characters. I touched upon this when I talked about Gladstone Gander, but his tragedy falls along the lines of “it is lonely at the top”. A lot of writers and fans will explore the tragedy of Gladstone’s complicated relationship with Magica De Spell, Scrooge’s past and his love of wealth, it even slips into fans of the 2017 series, with people making headcanons of fanfictions of Fethry’s isolation in the abandoned sea lab. Why do these characters invite us taking such a tragic look at them? Why is it we want Gladstone and Magica to never get together? Why is it we want Fethry to get some retribution for his time in the Sea Lab? Why is it we want the characters to lose their loving parents?
However, it is this tragedy that can bring the characters together. Fans of DuckTales 2017 have noticed that Gladstone, Fethry and Della have spent most, if not all of the ten years Donald spent mad at Scrooge in isolation, noting that they all share that tragedy, albeit in separate ways, Gladstone being stuck in a casino that feeds off his luck, Fethry being stuck in a dilapidating sea lab, Della being stuck on the moon, and her only way home destroyed by a giant bug. It’s also easy to assume that Scrooge as well, was in some form of isolation. When we first see him, interacting with his money, he isn’t diving into it like we normally associate the character doing, he looks down almost depressingly at the vault as he drops a few coins in. It’s easy to believe that the only people Scrooge interacted with before Donald came back into his life, were his business partners, and Beakley and Webby.
This makes you wonder if the characters share other traumas and depressions, something they can all bond over. Something like, the death of their parents. It is common knowledge that Gladstone Gander’s parents, Daphne Duck and Gustave Gander, met an unfortunate fate on Daphne’s birthday, where they received a free picnic, and overate, or more realistically, choked on something. The tragedy of it is, Daphne shared the same birthday with her only son, Gladstone. Duck fan-comic writer Sarah Jolley, otherwise known as ModMad, did a fantastic take on this story in their comic The White Balloon, which adds even more tragedy to the story by tying it up with Gladstone’s insane bad luck on his Birthday, and also implying that Gladstone himself had something to do with it.
Canonically, Donald and Fethry do not share this tragedy with Gladstone, as there has never been confirmation of either of their parents dying, at least to my knowledge. But it is often headcanoned that Hortense and Quackmore died, leaving Donald to be raised by Grandma Duck, and it’s often been thought, though not by everyone, that Fethry’s parents, Eider Duck and Lullabelle Loon, also died. In a way, it brings the three cousins together, and it does tie into how they see family. In Ducktales 17, we know a big reason that Donald is overprotective of his nephews is because of Della’s mishap in space, that he fears losing someone else so close to him, especially Della’s kids. It isn’t hard to see that Donald feels similar about Gladstone and Fethry, that the loss of his parents, and his aunts and uncles, is a large reason that despite everything, he still loves his cousins. It can also tie in to readers who believe that Della died in space or on the moon, that this is some kind of curse for the Duck Family, Donald’s mother died, and when his sister became a mother, she died too.
One of my all time favourite Alternate Universes for the Duckverse is Solbabydraws’ “Teenage Cousin Shenanigans” which explores the universe where Donald, Della, Gladstone and Fethry grew up on Grandma Ducks farm, and it does not shy away from the fact that their parents are all dead. It even gives them character traits that might have stemmed from the trauma of having lost their parents at such young ages. Gladstone’s parents died from something food related so he has an eating disorder, Donald’s parents died in a car accident, so he takes road safety super seriously, Fehtry’s parents died unexpectedly and his brother, Abner (Sort of comics canon) was sent away, so he is kind of clingy. It doesn’t just look at how their tragedy effected them on a surface level, it does add some depth to it.
I looked at the possibility of how a tragedy effected Donald in this post here, where I talk about how Donald might not just be jealous of Gladstone’s luck, but also resent it, tying it to the loss of Della. And in another post, I talk about how Gladstone’s life of ease and luxury could simply just be a coping mechanism for him, toping it off with this post where I call Gladstone “Disney’s greatest Tragic Figure”. So, in some ways it is interesting to think about how these different tragedies have affected the characters, from Gladstone having an eating disorder, to Donald having PTSD from his time in the military.
Circling back to the original question, if it is unconfirmed that Donald’s parents are dead, then why do assume they are? Well, the basic answer, I believe is because at the end of the day, we do like exploring this tragic side of these characters. One of the greatest Duck comics ever written was a Topolino story called “The Solitude of the Four-Leaf Clover”, which asks the question, “What if Gladstone felt his luck was a bad thing?”. In some ways, this tragedy can help make the characters more relatable, easier to empathize with, and in some ways understandable. In the end, Hortense and Quackmore are not casualties or the vicious off-screen disease, but simply because their demises, make for a more interesting character study.
...
...
But, why does it? Why do we want these characters to go through hardships, misery and trauma? For that, I have theories, but nothing more.

Do you know what came out today, 60 years ago?
Tumblr media
"Zio Paperone e il kiwi volante" written by Abramo and Giampaolo Barosso and drawn by Giorgio Bordini is Rockerduck's very first italian story and his all time second appearance in comics.
First published on Almanacco Topolino #75 dated 1st March 1963, not only it marked the beginning of John's astonishing italian career but it also holds the merit of starting a brief new strike of stories starring Rockerduck written by american authors, first and foremost Fethry's creator Dick Kinney.
Bordini's Rockerduck is still very similar to Barks', so much so that some poses of the character are reproduced exactly from Barks' drawings in "Boat Buster". "Zio Paperone e il kiwi volante" is the only story in which Rockerduck's drawn by Bordini, starting from his third story the character then ends up in Romano Scarpa's capable hands who defines his ultimate design. A design moved forward by other great artists such as Giovan Battista Carpi and Giorgio Cavazzano.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barks' panels from "Boat Buster" (1961) and Bordini's from "Zio Paperone e il kiwi volante" (1963) face to face.
Despite being such a corner stone for Rockerduck's character, "Zio Paperone e il kiwi volante" (which translates as "Uncle Scrooge and the flying kiwi") is not a very well known story. In Italy it got re-printed only three times (latest one being in 2006), while internationally it's been published only in Belgium, Brazil, France, Spain, Germany and Turkey with very few re-prints and in pretty old editions too 😔 (I know it's not the masterpiece of the century, but it's a fun 60s story and I'd like to see it get a re-print more often).
Fun fact: in "Zio Paperone e il kiwi volante" Rockerduck and Scrooge address each other as "Mr. Rockerduck" and "Mr. McDuck" and they use the courtesy pronoun "voi" (second person plural). They keep being... err... "formally civil" to each other until 1966 but only in stories written in italian, while in translated works (such as stories produced by Disney for the foreign market) they are on first name basis 🤷
Tumblr media
"You'll have to walk over my dead body!" "That's exactly what I intend to do!" Their first italian brawl, rigidly on courtesy pronoun basis... history!

if we were able to get another fethry episode in ducktales, what would you want it to be about? or, alternatively, things u wish we got in ducktales but never did
I REALLYYYY REALLY WISH THEY COULD HAVE MADE FETHRY IN MERVANA WORK.... i know it's probably because there were just too many characters or maybe his stuff with the mermaids was just too distracting from the main stuff of the ep but he would have just been so perfect for it like literally. hippie free love friends of the ocean sharing is caring mermaid society. these are his people fr. i think i also just kind of wanted fethry as a part of group family adventures bonding with everyone at large more in general like honestly not a whole lot it's a big cast to balance ! but can you not help but feel bad for the guy he was at the bottom of the ocean for 4 and a half years. invite him to some stuff
as far as things i wish we had got i do really wish we could have gotten more of a scene of him and gladstone reuniting with della :v[ LIKE i know with pacing and time you have to pick and choose what you focus on and moonvasion was just completely jammed packed but on the other side of things she was on the moon for 10 years like everyone thought she was probably dead and nobody told either of them she was back 😭 i just wish there had been a cousin group hug at the very least...
as far as prospective ep ideas that's a little less specific fbshsishgh !! anything that explored more of fethry and huey's parallels would have been really great !
i figure gladstone (kinda ? technically but not really ?) got play chaperone to team magic, so fethry being group chaperone to huey, boyd and violet would have been really cute ! and violet gets to be in both groups because she's great-- and she's a junior woodchuck, along with huey and boyd ! fethry has his jwcgb under his hat just like huey does as we know, maybe it could be some fun little adventure stemming from that :v]
i would have loved to see him and webby team up too !!!! i just think their energies would have matched really well ! both of them have such unbridled enthusiasm and passion for literally anything they're doing, and i think they also share a certain kind of sense of empathy and sensitivity, theyd just be such a good choice to bond as well i think
and more broadly thinking i would have loved more group cousin shenanigans. i knowww the comics have plenty with don gladdy and fethry but what they DONT have is della, and she would have been a perfect addition their dynamic to really round everything out and it would have just been so fun to watch. what could have been
i also kind of wanted della to give scrooge a flying elbow from the top line for leaving fethry at the bottom of the ocean but i'm mean ! to that old man in specific ! so it is what it is

New Everything Parts 10-End
“Come on, come on,” Hugo urges the phone. It rings and rings, and then-
“Hello-“
“Fethry!! Jeez, don’t-“
“-you’ve reached Fethry’s voicemail! I'm probably spending time with family, or on the pier, or out on the water with Mitzi! Leave me a message and I’ll call back when I can, okay?”
The phone beeps.
“Fethry, it’s Hugo,” Hugo says quickly. “What the hell is going on?! The line went dead and there’s this giant-“
He peeks out of the window again.
“-this giant monster thing! It’s wearing a red shirt, I don’t know if that helps but where are you?!”
He hangs up, breathing heavily, then slams the phone down on the receiver. “Damn it!!”
Hugo races to the door, grabbing a hoodie- even if nothing’s wrong, which he doubts, he can’t risk anyone recognizing him- and sets Scruffy gently on the table. “Can’t let you get hurt, little buddy. Be good.”
Time to go.
———
When Hugo emerges onto the streets, Duckburg is in chaos. Several cars are flattened, there’s a few fire hydrants spewing water, and there on the corner a cabbage stand has been smashed.
Hugo barely pays any attention to this, however. He scans the few people fleeing the scene, in hopes of finding Fethry, then sees a familiar limousine.
“That’s that duck’s limo,” he realizes, already running over. It’s a long shot, but maybe Fethry will be there.
He’s not. Instead Hugo finds the limo-driving duck from the move- what’s his name, Lunchpad? Launchpot? No, Launchpad.
“Hey, it’s you!” Launchpad clambers out of the wrecked vehicle, and promptly pitches forward. Hugo watches as the duck picks himself up. “Have you seen Uncle McDee?”
“Uncle who now?”
“Uncle McDee,” Launchpad explains. “Mr. McDuck! I was gonna go see if he was okay, and then I crashed.” He pauses. “Actually, it was because the monster nearly stepped on the limo-“
Hugo waves his hand impatiently. “Haven’t seen him. Have you seen Fethry?”
Launchpad frowns. “Nope, not today. Why?”
But Hugo’s already gone, running down the hill in the direction the monster had gone. Something tells him that, as a Duck, Fethry will be where the trouble is.
———
He tries Fethry’s number again, only to get another voicemail. “No, no! Come on and pick up, Fethry, this isn’t funny!! Answer your phone, Duck- oof!”
Hugo rights himself in time to see two dogs- two of the Beagle Boys, he thinks- rush past him after nearly knocking him down. “Hey!!”
The dogs don’t stop, or even look back. They’re shouting something- hamburger? Weird thing to yell about, but okay. Maybe they’ve seen Fethry.
“Hey,” Hugo calls again, racing to catch up, and swerves in front of them. “Have you seen a skinny duck in a red hat?”
The shorter Beagle Boy glares up at him. “No, we haven’t!! Now move it before I move you myself!”
Pre-Fethry Hugo- well, Steelbeak- would have taken that as a challenge and started swinging. He wants to, but somehow his time with Fethry as a friend (friend?!!) has changed his priorities. Instead, he takes a breath and steps aside.
Scanning the area again reveals nothing Hugo hasn’t already seen, and he realizes with a jolt that he’s worried. “Come on, Fethry,” he mutters, “where are you?”
———
Fethry gasps as Ana stumbles, but quickly catches the toddler and hands her to her mother. “Here, May,” he says, “this way she won’t fall!”
He scans the group- the ducks May and Ana, plus a couple named Remus and Leonard, and their son Lucan. They’re all safe, and he breathes a sigh of relief.
Fethry had been mid-call with Hugo when a car flew by- evidently kicked by the monster. He’d ducked and accidentally dropped his phone, which hit the pavement and skidded into the street, only for the monster to step on it. After that he’d been forced to run like everyone else, only stopping to help Remus, Lucan, and Leonard rescue May and Ana from a collapsed building. Thankfully nobody had been hurt, but then Fethry had to lead them away from the destruction the monster was causing.
“We’re almost to Killmotor Hill,” he tells them. “We just have to get past these next few apartments!”
Leonard grins. “Thank God,” he says, gripping his partner’s arm. “Hopefully Gizmoduck arrives soon, before more people get trapped or hurt.”
Remus pats the lion’s shoulder comfortingly. “Don’t worry, honey,” he says. “Fethry knows the way.”
“I hope Gizmoduck gets here soon,” Ana whimpers, clinging to her mother.
The wolf cub, Lucan, looks determined. “Of course he will! He’s a hero, and heroes always save the day!! Right, dad?”
Remus nods. “Right, Lucan. For now, though, we have to stick close to Mr. Fethry, okay? He’s gonna get us out of here.”
“DON’T BE AFRAID, CITIZENS!”
Ana looks up, suddenly excited. “I see him!!”
“I AM-“
“Gizmoduck!” Lucan exclaims, pointing. “He’s here!!”
Hopeful eyes follow the superhero, white armor shining bright against the blue shy. The hero waves as they fly by, and Fethry could swear he sees a confident grin. “We’d better get out of his way,” he tells the group.
What follows is frighteningly similar to the old war movies Donald had snuck in to see when they were kids- explosions, smoke, and rubble everywhere. Fethry probably won’t be able to hear properly for a few days, and Ana’s already covering her ears in her mother’s arms.
Everything looks like it’s going to be fine, when, while scrambling over a fallen tree, May twists her ankle.
“Aah!!” The duck cries out, falling to the ground. Lucan helpfully rushes to catch Ana.
“Come on, miss,” Leonard says, helping her up. “Let us help you.”
“We’ll help you walk,” Remus adds. “Lucan, do you have Ana?”
“Yeah, dad,” the wolf pup confirms. “I’ve got her.”
Seeing how small Lucan still is, Fethry decides to stick close to both him and Ana. “Hey, don’t cry,” he says cheerily to the toddler. “We’re gonna be okay!”
“Promise?”
Fethry crouches down, closer to her eye level. “Promise-“
WHAM!!
With a cry, Gizmoduck comes hurtling past them. They slam into a still-standing shop- Fethry thinks it sells surfboards- and their armor begins smoking.
“Okay,” Fethry says decisively. “They're okay, we’re okay, we can still make it to-“
“RoooaaaaAAAAAAAAAAR!!!”
Oh no.
“Fethry! Lucan!!”
“Ana!!”
“Fethry!!”
———
The pier is covered with rubble when Hugo arrives, and frightened cries fill the air. He can see Gizmoduck, propped up against a wall and producing a frightening amount of smoke, and the monster, visible only by virtue of its size, but his focus isn’t on any of that. It’s on the scrawny duck in the floppy red hat, standing bravely in front of a couple of kids.
“Fethry!!” Hugo shouts, breaking into a run. He’s found them, they’re safe, he’s found them and it’s going to be okay now-
-except that the monster raises an arm and throws a chunk of building.
“No!!” Hugo yells, forcing his run into a sprint. He gets closer and closer- sees Fethry shove the kids out of the way, the kids are safe but Fethry isn’t- Hugo’s too slow and he’s gonna lose everything again-
(Hugo is fifteen and has been brought to the hospital waiting room by a concerned teacher. He’s angry at first- he doesn’t need to go to school, why is she butting into his life like that- but the doctor calls him into room 104. “Hugo,” ze says gently, and right away Hugo knows that everything has gone terribly, awfully wrong. “It’s your mother.”)
(Hugo is twenty and his beak has just been shattered. He can’t talk, he can’t defend himself, he can’t fight. He’s in prison, he’s trapped, and everything he relied on is gone. He’s angry, and scared.)
(Hugo is twenty-nine when FOWL is finally defeated. Just when he thought he had what passed for a stable home, a solid rock to cling to, everything came crumbling down around him, again, and Hugo was alone.)
He reaches Fethry and stumbles to a halt. No time to get both of them to safety, so he wraps himself around his friend’s body and closes his eyes tightly. The impact doesn’t hurt that much, which admittedly is probably bad, but as he opens his eyes he sees Fethry’s face- dirty and shocked, but unharmed.
“Hugo!!” Fethry yelps, catching him as he topples sideways. “Are you okay?!”
He’s not, he knows he’s not, even with the lack of pain. He’s just gotten hit with a wall, and something’s probably broken and-
“Ow,” he manages- yup, that’s blood. “Hey, Feathers. Forget about me, are you hurt?”
Fethry shakes their head, eyes darting over him. “Hugo, you stuck yourself in front of a building to protect me!! I’m fine, but you need to go to the hospital!!”
Several somethings are definitely broken, Hugo decides. He can see Fethry still, but black spots are starting to gather around the edge of his vision and now he’s really sure that’s a bad thing.
“Feathers- Fethry- look at me.”
Fethry’s eyes land on his. “Hugo-“
“Fethry.”
Fethry stops talking.
“I’m not good with words,” Hugo admits, fighting to stay conscious, “and I’m not good with emotions. All I knew before you was cold and hard and fighting to get on top- but then you found me in that shed. It was raining and I felt miserable already, and the last thing I wanted was company because everything had gone wrong again. You didn’t leave, though, and I didn’t understand it. If everything was bad, why were you acting like I was good?”
He takes a deep breath, reaching up to wipe away Fethry’s tears, but his hand falls before he can make it.
Fethry grabs it. “Why would you put yourself in danger like that, though? Why’d you think you had to- and now-“
A tear lands on Hugo’s cheek, and he smiles. He can’t hold his eyes open any more. “Because,” he murmurs. “People do crazy things when they’re in love.”
Everything is okay, he thinks. Everything is finally okay.
(Hugo is twenty-nine, and his last hold on anything normal has just been shaken by the arrival of a scrawny, red-jacketed duck. He’s angry, and he’s scared, but instead of everything falling apart, a new everything starts to shine through the cracks. Unlike his last “everythings,” this everything is gentle. It’s kind. It’s constant, and maybe it’s a bit weird, but it’s also causing him to fall in love, and Hugo suddenly realizes he can’t imagine life without it anymore. It’s Fethry, he knows. Fethry has become his rock to cling to, his closest friend, his person to talk to. Fethry has become everything to him.)

I thought about Donald and Gladstone being wild west outlaws so...
There are very few laws in the west, well there plenty but not for the outlaw, the rugged, bloodthirsty individual with a bounty on his head and reputation that keeps him safe from all but the boldest, bravest and stupidest. Some outlaws follow their own rules, some don't kill the unarmmed, some don't kill women or children, some only kill when they need to, but there is one law all outlaws follow; Do not mess with The Unlucky Shot, leave Donald Duck alone.
This is a law that is unwritten, but a law all must follow. He is no sherrif, no marshall, not even a decent shot. Duck couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. However, he is one of the most connected men in the whole country. His mother was Horty McDuck, the sister of the powerful lawman Scrooge McDuck, and his father was Quackmore Duck, the son of the Ol' farmer Elvira 'Grandma' Duck, herself a relative of the Coot family. Scrooge and Elvira are two people you never want to cross, and these connections go deeper. Donald is cousins with Gladstone Gander, Mr. Lucky himself, and though they vie for the affection of the lovely Lady Daisy, when push comes to shove, Donald and Gladstone can put aside their disagreements and shove. Don't forget his other cousin, Fethry 'Red Hat' Duck, and his brother Abner 'Whitewater' Duck. Abner could snap your gun in two with his bare hands, and Fethry, well he is a wildcard, we are unsure if he is on the side of the law, or the lawless, it seems he is both whenever something happens to strike his fancy. Beyond the familial connections, he is a member of the Final Five, a group of misfits who became one of the most feared gangs in all the state, and The Three Caballeros, the most eccentric bounty hunters. With the McDuck clan at his side, his grandma and cousins around him, and his friends, it is common knowledge that even talking about messing with Donald Duck is a death sentence, however, one day someone did decide to mess with the Duck.
I remember that day quite well, it was as hot and dry as any other day, and equally as loud and bustling. Carts and Wagons and Carriages were being pulled across the town by the dozens every half-minute. Workers were dragging crates and barrels into store rooms and dragging them out to the porches, dropping each one with a loud thundering slam on the heavy, dry wood. Store bells rang with such a consitancy that it was surely impossible for the shop clerks to keep up. I myself was just sitting outside of the hotel, whittling away at some dropwood I picked up the other day, a large man walked out of the hotel, he stopped. I turned to look at him, and I quickly turned away, I knew who he was, from one glance I feared for my life more than when I faced any other crooked scoundrel, for that before me was no regular wanted man, it was Dead End Pete, a man whose wanted poster warned everyone, "Bringing him in alive will get both of you shot on site, Dead only. $1000 for his body full of holes, double that for his head alone."
I prayed he didn't see me, but see me he did. I heard the sound of his pistol being cocked, I felt it placed under my chin, I felt his hot breath. He told me to put my knife down, I dropped it faster than I dropped anything else, it bounced off my knee, I heard it clunk against the wooden boards. I heard Pete's pistol fire, I was so scared, I didn't feel he had pulled his gun away from me, not until I heard him walk away, his heavy boots making some of the wood creak under his weight. I opened my eyes, he hit a random bystander, she lay dead on the ground. Everybody backed away from her, I caught a good glimpse of her, and I myself nearly fainted, it was Della Duck, Donald's twin sister. There she lay, dead, and killed for no real reason, or so it seemed. I remember, I remember looking at the crowd, and wondering how many more would be killed just by being near the two when they fought. Dead End Pete started a war, that the whole town would suffer from.

DAY 31: RIPE.
...Look, there was this one time Donald had to save Daisy from a rampant wheel of cheese in Denmark and I built the scene from there. Also crossed the streams for designs, BUT. Maybe there was fancy Halloween party prep and Gladstone snagged a huge wheel of cheese as a bonus and the rest of the gang had to transport it??? As long as Scrooge doesn’t have to pay the full price for it.
What matters is I’M DONE WITH INKTOBER! YEAH!!! THanks for joining me on this month-long journey augh what happened where am I

Question whats your HC; which triplet would really look like donald when they’re adults?
Tumblr media
Fucking Huey by far. I think in looks and sorta personality, he turns out to be a lot like Don! I feel like Huey will absolutely grow up to be a thic boy, strong in the same way Don is, and it’s already been proven that he has the same McDuck anger that his uncle has as well (though, I think as he gets older, he’ll be able to control it better than Donald does, but it’s just as explosive and protective and ornery). I think it may also be an oldest sibling thing (since I hc Don as the older twin and older than Glad and Fethry) but I feel that Huey just really grows into that, will-take-the-whole-world-on-his-shoulders-for-his-family vibe Donald just exudes. Both Dewey and Louie both inherit strong traits that can easily be traced back to Donald, but in terms of looks and really just the way he carries himself, anyone within a mile can easily say “Oh yeah, that’s definitely Donald Duck’s boy.”

13 Donald
#13 Who did this?
Gladstone decides wholeheartedly he’s in the wrong place at the wrong time the second Donald’s eyes lock on him and the only thought he has to show for it is a dispirited, ’Seriously, he needs to get a new hobby.’
Because Don crosses the school courtyard between them like it was nothing, Gladstone barely having time to blink before his cousin’s hands are holding his jawline in place, turning his head every which way and that to get a better look at the freshly purpled bruise now blossoming across his right eye and cheek.
“What happened?” Don growls, low and mean, but Gladstone barely even winces at his temper, because for all of Donald’s bark, there was true hurt and anger in his eyes. The kind that came entirely from a caring place, rooted every last inch in stupid protective love.
And Gladstone hated being the reason behind that pained expression etched across Donald’s face. It was making something hot and heavy swell in the back of Gladstone’s throat, a raw sort of compassion that Glad doesn’t think he’ll ever get used to receiving.
The kind of stubborn concern he had every intention of avoiding if Donald hadn’t been waiting for him by the flagpole long after the final school bell had rung like some kind of vigilant guard dog.
“Don’t get your flannel all worked up, it’s not as bad as it looks,” Gladstone lied because that was always easier when it came to Don’s mother-henning. He tried to swat his cousin’s hands away, but Don had an impossible iron barred grip on his chin, destroying any possible chance of escape Gladstone had, so he resorted to tapping his cousin’s arms absentmindedly while looking just about everywhere other than meeting the 14-year-old’s piercing gaze. “Where’s Dumb and Dumber? Thought y'all’d be halfway through a bag of bacon catching crawdads by now.”
“Apparently a group of squirrels got into Fethry’s lunch bag during recess and ate most of the crawdad bait, so Del and him went home to get some more and I stayed behind to let you know so you wouldn’t head down to the river by yourself and wonder where we were,” Don said all in one, short, tense breath.
Like he couldn’t be bothered to spend any more concentration on breathing as he glared down at Glad’s face, inspecting it like there was something hidden tattoed in the bruises. Gladstone ignores the flush feeling rising in his cheeks. Normally he’d be on cloud nine to have so much attention squarely focused on him.
But with Donald looking at him with all the whole world of worry that he didn’t know where to place, it was just making him sick.
“Awww, that’s really gross that you care so much,” Glad cooed in an annoyed tone, rocking back on his heels softy and doing his best not to let the action choke himself with Don’s current unwavering headlock.
“Well, thanks for letting me know. Better not keep them waiting, I bet Del the first one to catch three mudbugs gets shower privileges all week, and if you don’t think I’d sail you down the river in a New York heartbeat to win then you’re dead wrong. I always look good, but even I can admit that these curls take some time to maintain.”
And Gladstone would have used that as an excuse to wiggle himself free and stroll right around Donald, going on their merry way and ignoring the giant target bruising itself across Glad’s face. But of course, Donald’s grip on his jaw was ironclad, never wavering for a second, and there was a look on his eyes so fierce and fervid it was burning holes into Gladstone’s chest.
“Oh no, you don’t! Do even think about changing the subject,” Donald says sharply, concern and annoyance pouring into every word equally like a threaded braid and with a tone he was whole years too young to have. Taking on a persona like a frustrated guardian of at least ten years older than Gladstone, rather than an overly defensive cousin who was only a year older. “What happened?”
To be fair to Gladstone, the last thing he wanted was to fight Don. That’s why Gladstone had waited almost 30 minutes after the final bell had rung before leaving the bathroom.
Because he was hoping to miss his cousins altogether. Hoping that they would head to the river without him and he’d have some time to put some distance between the school and him so that, either way, even if Don did want to fight him about this, there was nothing he could have done.
And really, why should Don do anything?
Gladstone’s 13 and Donald’s 14 and honestly, even that shouldn’t be any reason for Donald to act like he’s suddenly Gladstone’s parent. They’re the same height for Pete’s sake! Gladstone can do anything Donald can do and there’s never a reason for Donald to treat him like some brat who can’t take care of himself, and yet here he is, acting like Gladstone’s bodyguard and it makes him want to scream in frustration.
“Relax, stupid, it was just P.E accident. I got hit in the face with a stray volleyball during one of the free games. I’m lucky I didn’t get a bloody beak.” He passive-aggressively shrugged, waving a dismissive hand away shamelessly. Hoping that was enough of an answer to skeet by. “Now will you let go already? Take a picture, it’ll last longer, but my face isn’t going to look any prettier no matter how hard you scowl.”
The pointless jab only made him scowl harder, but Donald eased his grip regardless. “You? The luckiest duck in the world. A P.E accident?” Donald says slowly, like the wheels are spinning in his head but there’s ice on the road so he can’t get enough traction to go anywhere. He let’s go of Gladstone reluctantly, but Don keeps his hands out in front of him, like he’s afraid Gladstone might bolt if he doesn’t keep his guard up and ready to grab him at any moment.
Gladstone has half a mind too, but instead, he just huffs impatiently and straitens out the collar of his shirt and readjusts his backpack on his shoulders.
“Hey, I’m not any happier about it than you, but I guess even I can get faulty luck sometimes. What can I say, it happens to the best of us.” And Gladstone’s carefully not meetings Donald’s eyes again, because he knows that even the slightest hesitance will give something away, and knowing Donald, the last thing he needs is to give his cousin some sort of stupid incentive to go charging off on his behalf to a battle he doesn’t want him to fight.
Honestly, after that day he’s had, all Gladstone wants is to head home. “That’s why I didn’t meet you guys by the lockers after school, I was in the nurses’ office getting checked out. Looks like it isn’t too bad though, no bleeding under the skin or anything, so we’re all good to hit the road.”
And he shoots Don an easy smile like it was his day job, and wishes with all his luck that it’s compelling enough to make Don drop the subject altogether when he passes around him easily, tapping him on the shoulder comfortably with all the confidence and smugness of someone who doesn’t have anything to hide.
It should have been easy. He’s hid all the bruises up until now without any suspicion. He isn’t about to let one little black eye blow his best-kept secret in one day.
Gladstone rests his hands behind his head and waits till he reaches the school gates before asking, “Hey, do you think if I do a convincing enough puppy dog pout, I can get Feth on my side to help me win the bet against Del? She really takes too long of showers in the morning and I think it’s time her reign of terror over the bathroom is over.”
He’s hoping for a laugh. Or at the very least a snide remark, but it’s only when he gets no response from Donald that he checks over his shoulder, to find that his cousin isn’t right behind him, but still at the other end of the courtyard, staring at him with a furrowed brow that made storm clouds look tame.
And then, before Gladstone could rightly ask him what he was waiting for, Donald dropped his backpack with a resounding thud that wholely echoed through Gladstone’s core, before marching back towards the entrance of the school with a conviction that would take a tank to tear down.
Gladstone feels like he swallowed ice as he watches Don’s back all for a mere 4 seconds before bolting after him, scooping Donald’s backpack up in the process, and just managing to reach the front door of the school right after it had slammed shut behind his hot heeled cousin.
“Do-ouufff-Don! Wait!” Gladstone calls, just barely managing to catch up with Donald as he rounded the first hallway. “What are you- where are you going?”
“Where are they?” Donald growls through clenched teeth, not meeting Gladstone’s eyes but slowing his tempo just a bit so that Gladstone could keep up easier.
It was a good thing he did, because at his cousin’s words, Gladstone almost tripped over himself, and Donald barely managed to catch him by his upper arm and help pull him back up to his feet. This stopped them fully, which gave Gladstone a chance to catch the breath Donald just stolen from him.
“They? They who?” Gladstone asked slowly, trying not to let the panic in his voice show as he anchored Donald’s backpack to his chest to steady his breathing. “What are you talking about?”
“Shut up Gladstone, you know exactly what I’m talking about,” Donald snapped, pointing a finger at Gladstone’s swelling black eye. And Gladstone did his best not to back into the lockers behind him in surprise. “The people who did that to you.”
And Gladstone felt his whole body go frigid. Because shit. Shit! This is exactly what he didn’t want to happen.
“W-wait Don. You have it wrong, this was an accident, remem-?” Gladstone tried to reassure, but it must have been evident in the panic in his voice because Donald was already rounding him with those electric eyes sparking sharp and bright.
“Bullshit Glad, don’t lie to me! I’m not stupid! I know how your luck works.” He barked, and he was getting that kind of mad that turned his fists taut with how tight he was folding them.
Fethry once disclosed to Gladstone a forgotten amount of years ago, that he was always afraid when Donald made his hands go that tight, because it usually meant that he was about to hit something really, really hard. And that whenever Donald did that, his fists always came back bruised and bloodied red.
It was the reason why Fethry usually held Don’s hands whenever it looked like he was about to get mad at something petty or about to get into a fight. It was a defense mechanism, one only a 10-year-old Fethry, with all the love and admiration and whole bleeding affection for his only family, could come up with, and it worked.
Don couldn’t rightly hurt himself, if he was already holding onto and protecting something else.
“Accidents don’t just happen to you. You don’t just get hurt.”
Something about his words brought something mean and biting clawing to the front of Gladstone’s heart, and he frowned as he took a step forward towards his cousin. That spitfire fight that Donald always seemed to bring out in him coming back to life. “Oh please, Don. I’m lucky, not invincible. I get hurt all the time! Just last week I got hit in the head by that apple!”
Donald rolled his eyes hard enough to hurt something. “Yeah, exactly! Because I threw it at you! It wasn’t an accident!”
“Yeah? And? What’s your point? I still got hurt!” Gladstone argued, squeezing Donald’s backpack tighter, like it was the only lifeline he had at the moment. Because really, what was his cousin’s point? What was the point to any of this? “Honestly, I don’t get why you’re so mad right now. It’s not a big deal, I’m fine, ok? It’s just a black eye-”
“STOP TRYING TO PUSH ME AWAY, YOU PRICK!”
Gladstone will never know why the hallways were so empty and quiet that sunny afternoon, but somewhere in the back of his mind, he’s grateful that no one was around to see the expression his cousin was making.
Painful. That’s really the only way Gladstone could describe it. Like something was breaking and tearing Donald from the inside out, and he was staring at Gladstone with a burning fury because love looked like that sometimes.
And Gladstone’s hit with a sudden wave of nausea, because for all the sneaking around and hiding the bruises and scars was supposed to keep his family away and protect them, it just ended up hurting them in a way he never meant it to.
“You’re not fi- don’t pretend to be-,” Donald chokes, and he isn’t crying, but his eyes are shiny and he rubs at them aggressively with the back of his palm anyway and takes a shaky breath. “Your luck only protects you from things it has control over. Supernatural or otherwise, be it weather, or traffic or even sports, your luck has always pulled through, with you being on top.”
And then those tight fists are on Gladstone’s shoulders, rubbing a fond hand against the back of Glad’s neck, and Gladstone doesn’t care to wonder if it’s to steady himself or the shaking coursing through Gladstone’s body. “But I’ve been around you long enough to know that your luck doesn’t control people, Glad. And it can’t protect you against their emotions, good or bad. So when you get hurt, it’s only because people hurt you.”
“And don’t you dare,” Donald says, tracking a finger softly over the bruised skin under Gladstone’s eye and glaring at him with a raw passion that hurts, and Gladstone ignores the stinging cornering at the edges of his eyes. “Try to tell me that that isn’t a big fucking deal. That you aren’t worth getting mad about.”
Later on that night, he’ll definitely be glad that there wasn’t anyone in that hallway to see the tears pour out of his swollen eyes when Donald pulls him into a rough, awkward hug. But at that moment, he can’t think to do anything other than drop Donalds backpack and hug his cousin just as tightly and with every last inch of his trembling strength.
After a few moments, they pull away, and both are rubbing their eyes without mercy, so when they both look up at each other with red, puffy eyes, they do little more than try to stifle tired laughter that echoes through the hallways. And Gladstone thinks it’s the best sound he’s ever heard.
“God, what were you even thinking,” Donald sighs, rubbing a rueful hand through his hair in spent exasperation.
“I was thinking I don’t need my older cousins coming to bail me out every time I get into a stupid scrap just because he feels obligated to,” Gladstone quips back without shame as he bends down to retrieve Donald’s backpack so that he doesn’t have to look at his cousin. “I’m not your problem, ya know.”
“The hell you aren’t,” Donald shot back without cruelty, and staring at him with those deep blue eyes that Gladstone could just drown in. “And, Jesus Glad, you’re not an obligation either. You’re family. You’re all I got.”
And with pure ernesty in his voice, he takes the backpack from Gladstone’s hands when he says, “You and Della and Fethry, you’re all my problems. Della probably being the biggest pain in my ass, but for better or for worse, you’re stuck with me. And I know I can be overbearing and protective but it’s just cause… cause I care. And worry. And you guys are idiots so you stress me out constantly. But, until the day you die, you guys are my one and only problems. Period. And I wouldn’t have it any other way for even a second. Got it?”
And he said it with so much honest confidence and truth, not giving Gladstone even a square inch of wiggle space to argue with him, that Gladstone had no choice but to believe him. So he didn’t argue, and just gave a soft nod and a smile that erased whole years of worry off of Donald’s face when he said, “Got it.”
Donald smiled back as he threw his backpack over his shoulder, but there was still a tense sort of air about him that Gladstone couldn’t very well erase no matter how much he wanted too.
“You’re not still thinking of fighting them, are you?” Gladstone asked, and Donald looked up at the bruise on his face like the answer to the meaning of life was tattoed right there and Don was doing everything in his power to decipher it.
Just watching Donald’s hands start to clench up again made Gladstone’s stomach do Olympic worthy backflips in worry, so he didn’t hesitate to leap forward and put an easy hand on his cousin’s shoulder. “Look, I promise you, it’s really not as bad as it looks ok? Doesn’t even hurt. Bit of ice and some aspirin and I’ll be right as rain by tomorrow. Plus, I don’t even think the dudes are here anymore, and Del and Feth are probably wondering where we are by now. So please, for now, can we just go home?”
Donald has a soft spot for Fethry roughly the size of Jupiter, that kid could convince Don to commit arson with him and all he had to do was give him a flash of those honey colored puppy dogs and Don was a hook-line-and-sinker in seconds.
Gladstone knew that was just par for the course when you’re the baby brat of the family. But never in all his 13 years did he wish he could hone in his younger cousins powers more than he could at that moment as he stared at his cousin with wide, pleading eyes and just please, please Donnie. Let’s just go home.
And for a second, Gladstone didn’t think it would work, but after waffling in his own thoughts for what felt like a handful of minutes, Donald sighed reluctantly. He ran a hair through his fluffy hair, making it look messy and haphazard, and gave Gladstone and equally haphazard, incredulous look. “Fine, on two conditions.”
Gladstone hated conditions, but if it meant avoiding another fist fight, then he could work with the circumstances. “Shoot, coyboy,” he answered.
“First, you tell me about how you got this black eye. I wanna know everything that happened,” Donald listed, which in retrospect, seemed fair and easy to do. So when Gladstone nodded his understanding, Donald continued with, “And two, you stop keeping things kinda things from me. I don’t care if you get into fights, but I at least want to know about them when you do. I’m tired of you trying to sneak around me like I don’t notice you coming home with bruises and limps.”
And that, that kind of sent Gladstone’s whole world on a dizzying spin, and he was thankful that Donald ignored the way his hand instinctually tightened its grip on his arm. Because he didn’t know that Don knew. He thought he had kept it hidden so well. And if Don knew, did Della or Gus or Gran. Did Fethry know?
In his mind, there never seemed like a good time to bring up the fact that older kids just loved making him their number one punching dummy. It didn’t help that he was lucky, so he was a natural target for envy and hatred and snide comment and looks thrown his way.
It also didn’t help that he was a bit (or a lot) of a smart mouth and that usually ended up getting him in more trouble than he was worth. And sure, Donald and Della were popular, and it wasn’t a secret that they were cousins, so Gladstone was sure if he made a little noise about his situation, the bullies wouldn’t even stand a chance against them, and Gladstone would probably never be bothered again.
But Gladstone didn’t want to be saved by his cousins. The same way he would be saved by his luck. This was his problem. He was his own problem, and dammit if he couldn’t even handle this by himself.
So when the bruises started piling up, Gladstone just made every excuse in the book he could come up with to avoid attention from his cousins. Because the last thing he needed was for them to come save him. The last thing he need was for him to just be a nuisance, and bother, and worry, and not be able to do anything by himself.
But boy, even he couldn’t do that right, because Don had seen right through him like he always did and something close to white-tipped fear clenched around his heart when he yelped, “Ok, fine, but we can’t tell Gran of Della, Ok? Please. I’ll talk to you, but I don’t want to worry them about this. Not yet, not until I… Until I figure this out. Please, Don?”
Something soft and feather-light eased at the corners of Don’s eyes, and he rubbed a callous but endearing hand roughly through Gladstone’s hair before slinging an arm around him and leading him towards the school exit.
“You’re a selfish brat, you know that?” He says, and he isn’t meeting Gladstone’s eyes, but he’s smiling with a fond, crooked grin that’s full of all the warmth of the sun when he adds, “as long as we figure it out together, that’s fine with me.”
And Gladstone can’t help but laugh when he snakes an arm comfortably around Don’s side like it’s second nature as he soaks in this rare, tender moment he finds himself in.
That he’s actually in agreement with his older cousin.
Course, he’d never tell Donald that. And he hopes his cousin won’t mind that that’s one of the only things he’ll keep to himself from now on.
