#OTD in 1922 – In reprisal for the executions, Liam Lynch, Anti-Treaty IRA Commander, issues a general order to his forces to kill members of the Dáil (T.D.s) and senators who had voted for the Emergency Powers legislation.
In response to the executions, on 30 November, Liam Lynch, Chief of Staff of the Anti-Treaty IRA, ordered that any member of Parliament (TD) or senator who had signed or voted for the ‘murder bill’ should be shot on sight. He also ordered the killing of hostile judges and newspaper editors. On the same day, three more Republican prisoners were executed in Dublin. On 7 December, Anti-Treaty IRA…

“Eire M.P. Given 5 Years in Jail,” The Globe and Mail. June 20, 1942. Page 9. --- Dublin, June 18 (CP) — A letter allegedly disclosing plans to smuggle Sean Russell, commander of the outlawed Iris Republican Army, from the United States to Germany read today in special criminal court.
It was introduced in the trial of Stephen Hayes, member the Dail, who was sentenced to five years' imprisonment, on a charge of attempting to usurp the powers of the Eire Government.
Russell, chief signatory of “A declaration of war" on Britain which prefaced bomb incidents throughout the country three years ago, has not been heard of since he boarded an Italian ship bound from the United States to Genoa in April, 1940.

We've been furious here on the island regarding almost all the politicians leaving to pander to a genocidal administration.
I humbly request that when you see those fools shaming us abroad to remember that they have expressly ignored the will of the people. We marched in our hundreds of thousands for weeks and still they ignore our every request.
Ireland stands with Palestine always, those stooges from the Dáil do not represent us and will be removed in the upcoming General Election. They needed their last free holiday on the taxpayer given they'll never have power again.
If you are to engage in the festivities this weekend I request you utilise the black shamrock, and not the green. That is what we're doing here.
Saoirse don Phalaistín. 🇵🇸✊🇮🇪

very on brand for me that I’ve had only one in-person celebrity sighting (and it was at a protest) but multiple politician sightings.

Hello Mr. Gaiman,
I don’t know if you would feel comfortable sharing this, but you have been very supportive of library workers and reading, so I thought I would ask.
Here in Ireland libraries are being targeted right now to remove positive LGBTQ+ content, specifically YA stuff. Library workers are being insulted and intimidated; there have been demands to remove books from shelves. This is a coordinated campaign, and there has been little media attention paid to it; I think it’s believed that if the people trying to get books banned are ignored then they will go away.
Having seen how these campaigns have gone in the US and the UK, however, I consider that unlikely.
If you could share information about this then it might help get more attention. I have tried to embed a video link from the Dáil (the Irish Parliament) in this ask as proof that I am not talking through my arse. It will not embed, but I can provide it should you need verification (which is understandable). If you can share this I would be very grateful, and if not I hope that you are well and enjoying a well-earned hot beverage, wherever you are. Also, Norse Mythology rocks.
With thanks,
An Irish Hobbit
Consider it shared...

To the Irish among us, there's a vote in the Dáil tomorrow about sanctioning israel and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza/ending settler violence in the OPT. Highly recommend emailing TDs and encouraging them to vote in favour! I'll put links to the motion and a pre-written email in the reblogs for convenience

ireland's senate has just unanimously voted to impose sanctions against isreel. in a remarkable display of solidarity with the palestinian people, the irish senate unanimously passed a bill to impose sanctions on isreel and prevent the passage of US weapons through Irish airspace to isreel. the bill calls on the irish government to advocate for an international arms embargo on isreel and to refer Israel to the international criminal court for its war crimes and crimes against humanity in gaza and the west bank.
☑ the bill is based on the principle that isreel's illegal occupation, colonization, and apartheid policies in palestine constitute grave breaches of international law and human rights, and that ireland has a moral and legal obligation to take action to end its complicity and hold isreel accountable. the bill also recognizes the right of the palestinian people to self-determination, sovereignty, and dignity, and supports their legitimate resistance to Israeli oppression.
the bill is a historic step in the global movement for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) against isreel, which aims to pressure Israel to comply with international law and respect palestinian rights. the bill has been welcomed by palestinian civil society organizations, human rights groups, and solidarity activists, who have praised ireland for its courage and leadership in standing up to Israel's impunity and injustice.
the bill now awaits the approval of the lower house of the Irish parliament, the dáil, where it faces opposition from the ruling coalition of fine gael and fianna fáil, who have close ties with isreel and the US. however, the bill enjoys widespread public support in ireland, as well as the backing of several opposition parties, including sinn féin, labour, and the green party" — via deepshallowdive on instagram

“Oath of Allegiance to Crown to Soon Vanish,” Kingston Whig-Standard. February 28, 1933. Page 1 & 12. ---- It Will Become Dead Letter in Anglo-Irish Free State Treaty - Senate Blocked de Valera Move But That Body Now Rendered Powerless ---- (By the Canadian Press) DUBLIN, Irish Free State, Feb, 28. - Sixty days from tomorrow the oath of allegiance to the British Crown will vanish from the constitution of the Irish Free State and become a dead letter in the Anglo-Irish treaty.
President Eamonn de Valera will effect its disappearance by a motion in the Dail Eireann invoking Article 38A of the constitution, rendering the Senate powerless to obstruct passage of his Oath Removal Bill any longer. The constitution provides that bills which the Senate refuses to pass in such a manner as to satisfy the Lower House will, at the expiration of fifteen months, become law despite the Senate. In the event the Dail is dissolved in the meantime, the waiting period is shortened to sixty days.
The oath question has dominated every election campaign since the Free State was founded and has caused endless acrimony and bitterness between large sections of the Irish people.
Section That Offends The section of the Treaty to which so many Irishmen have taken offence says:
"The oath to be taken by members of the Parliament of the Irish Free State shall be in the following form: I... do solemnly swear true faith and allegiance to the constitution of the Irish Free State as by law established and that I will be faithful to H. M. George V, his heirs and success by law, in virtue of the common citizenship of Ireland with Great Britain and her adherence to and membership of the group of nations forming the British Commonwealth of Nations."
It was on this section that Mr. de Valera and his followers in 1921 founded their objection to the treaty and refused to recognize it. William T. Cosgrove and his party, however, found no cause for complaint in the section and insured that the oath clause in the constitution which was framed later should be a strong one.
Made Mandatory Article 17 of the constitution made the oath mandatory. The Republicans refused to take it and remained outside the Dail, leaving Mr. Cosgrave and his adherents with a clear field.
For a while the Republicians pursued a policy of abstention, contenting themselves with getting elected to the Dail and boycotting the Assembly. At that time all the Republican forces were concentrated in one organization, styled "Sinn Fein" (literally "ourselves alone"), but they grew tired of abstention and loss of political capital in the few years that followed.
After the 1932 elections when Mr. de Valera found himself heading the Government for the first time he immediately attempted to remove the oath. He was blocked by the Senate, He is now in a position to force removal of the oath but is still faced with a possibility that this move will fail to satisfy left wing extremists including the old Sinn Fein,

Cleary was a cruel, cynical and clinical killer. He shot Patrick Doherty in the buttock on Bloody Sunday while he was on the ground crawling away from him. The bullet tore up his spine. As Doherty lay crying out in pain, his life draining away from him, Barney McGuigan, an exceptionally brave and humane man, stepped forward with a white handkerchief looking to help Doherty. Cleary dropped to one knee, aimed his rifle and shot McGuigan in the head.
A UK injunction prohibiting the naming of Cleary does not apply in the Republic of Ireland.

Dáil Éireann (Assembly of Ireland) was suspended today, as the People Before Profit Political Party pushed to have a debate on the Irish Government's disappointing decision not to support South Africa's case against Israel in the ICJ. Richard Boyd Barrett condemned the decision.
