Pressure is building for Canada to send some of its Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine. This is after Germany decided to provide heavy weapons and allow other countries to do the same.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced his government's decision on Wednesday following weeks of hesitation. This created impatience among his country's allies, as Berlin would send 14 of its Leopard 2A6 tanks.
Scholz's announcement came shortly before U.S. President Joe Biden revealed plans to send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. This opened a potential floodgate following weeks of pleas by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The goal is for Germany and its allies to provide Ukraine with 88 of the German-made Leopards, which would make up two battalions, and work alongside the U.S.-made Abrams in launching counteroffensives against Russian forces.
Yet while Poland has already promised to send Leopards if Germany agreed, and other European nations such as Finland and Spain have indicated a willingness to do the same, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was more circumspect on Wednesday.
"Canada has stepped up significantly and without hesitation to support the Ukrainian people, and Ukraine itself," he said at a news conference marking the end of a three-day cabinet retreat in Hamilton.
"We will continue to be there to give whatever support we can to Ukraine. I won't be making any announcements today. But I can tell you we are looking very, very closely at what more we can do to support Ukraine."
The Canadian Armed Forces has 112 Leopard 2s in its inventory in a number of different variations. Those include 82 designed for combat and 30 for recovering disabled vehicles.
Retired lieutenant-general and former Canadian Army commander Jean-Marc Lanthier said in an interview that any donation will almost certainly need to balance the needs and benefits of Ukraine against the potential impact on Canada's military.
"Getting rid of any tanks -- because we have so few, and so few that are actively working -- would have an immediate impact on the level of readiness of the Army," said Lanthier, who served as an armor officer.
"Is that something that should stop us from sending tanks? I think we have moral responsibility in terms of the immediate needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Ukrainian people."
Canada bought its Leopards from Germany during the war in Afghanistan. They are organized into squadrons of 19 tanks each, with two squadrons in Edmonton and a third at CFB Gagetown, N.B.
"And normally you keep a bunch of them at a depot ready to be deployed, but that's not something we're doing necessarily because we don't have the numbers," said Lanthier.
Added to the pressure is the fact that only about half of Canada's Leopards are operational on any given day. This is due to maintenance and repair requirements for the surprisingly complex vehicles, he added.
Department of National Defence spokesman Andrew McKelvey would not comment Wednesday on what percentage of the military's Leopard 2s are currently operational. He would not comment on how many are out of service for maintenance and other reasons.
"Tank maintenance is similar to aircraft maintenance, and the status of the fleet at any given moment depends on a comprehensive maintenance, repair, and overhaul schedule, which is tied to specific requirements for training or operational employment," he said.
"For operational security reasons we cannot specify how many Leopard 2s are being maintained at any given time or give an indication of their maintenance schedule."
The question facing the government will ultimately be whether the benefit of sending tanks to Ukraine outweighs the impact on the military, Lanthier said. If it does, another question will be whether those tanks will be replaced -- and if so, how quickly.
"If we deem that we want to retain that capability that tanks give us in terms of a modern, battle-capable army, we need tanks," he said. "If we accept that, then anything we give has to be replaced."

“The Breakfast Club” co-host Charlamagne tha God said some young black voters support President Trump because the Republican nominee courts them.
The radio host, who said he is voting for Sen. Kamala Harris instead of Joe Biden, was asked by CNN’s Don Lemon on Tuesday what he and other black voters want from the two candidates.
He said they want to be heard.
“When it comes to black people you see who maybe are showing support for Trump, I think it’s because Trump is actually talking to young black male voters. He’s directing ads toward them. They are a group that never get courted,” he said. “Black people don’t get courted either as a whole. But that old Democratic regime speaks to old black men and they think everybody else in the black community and black families are going to fall in line.”
“Trump is targeting young black males in promos and marketing. It works,” Charlamagne said.
Lemon asked Charlamagne if having Harris as a running mate will attract black voters to the Democratic ticket.
“Absolutely. I mean, when we were pushing for Joe Biden to pick a black woman as his his VP, Senator Harris was who I had in mind. And I’m voting for Kamala Harris, I’ll tell you that in a heartbeat. I’m not necessarily voting for Joe Biden,” he said.
Charlamagne called Harris a “political change agent” who can lead the country into the future, “because I’m gonna be honest with you, Don, I’m just so tired of like old white male leadership in politics.”
The polling site FiveThirtyEight found that young black voters look at Trump differently than the older population of African Americans.
It said that while 35 percent of 18- to 29-year-old black men don’t agree with his policies, they like his strong manner and defiance of the political establishment.
It was in an interview with Charlamagne, whose real name is Larry McKelvey, in May that Biden started a firestorm when he said that African American voters who don’t support him “ain’t black.”
As the interview was concluding, Biden asked the host if he had any more questions and then added: “Well, I tell you what, if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”

Kamala's aide tries to CUT bad-tempered interview with Charlamagne Tha God by 'FAKING' technical issues when host asks who real president is before VP snaps and declares 'it’s Joe Biden and I’m Vice President and my name is Kamala Harris'
Vice President Kamala Harris's outgoing aide Symone Sanders on Friday tried to cut off an interview with radio host Charlamagne Tha God in a heated exchange, after he questioned who really held the power in Washington D.C.
Charlamagne - real name Lenard Larry McKelvey - had asked Harris on his Comedy Central show why she and President Joe Biden were unable to pass their flagship $1.75 trillion Build Back Better legislation.
His question so angered Harris that her aide, Sanders, could be heard off-camera on the other end of the remote interview, shouting: 'I'm so sorry Charlamagne, it's Symone, we have to wrap.'
'She can hear me,' Charlamagne chuckles. Sanders responds: 'Can you hear me now? I'm sorry but we have to wrap. I'm sorry to interrupt.'
'They're acting like they can't hear me, yo,' Charlamagne says, turning to a producer off-camera, implying that Harris' team was faking technical issues.
Harris, looking tense, stared at Charlamagne and replied, 'I can hear you,' allowing the interviewer to finally continue with his question.
'So who's the real president of this country? Is it Joe Manchin or Joe Biden?' Charlamagne asks.
'Come on, Charlamagne,' Harris says. 'Come on. It's Joe Biden.'
Charlamagne replies: 'I can't tell sometimes.'
Harris, growing visibly angry, wags her finger at the host and says: 'No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
'It's Joe Biden, and don't start talking like a Republican about asking whether or not he's president. And it's Joe Biden. And I'm vice president and my name is Kamala Harris.'
Sanders, the aide who attempted to cut off the interview, is the vice president's chief spokeswoman, who is one of at least four top aides to announce their departures from Harris' staff in recent weeks.
The 32-year-old Sanders will leave by the end of December, but no announcement has been made on whether she has lined up another job, sparking questions over the circumstances surrounding her departure.
In the interview, Charlamagne then asked why Biden was unable to convince Joe Manchin, the powerful West Virginia senator, to vote for his proposal.
Manchin's stubborn refusal to back the government's plan has put severe obstacles in the passage of Biden's bill.
Symone Sanders, Harris' senior advisor and chief spokesperson, made waves earlier this month by revealing her plans to depart the vice president's office.
Her resignation follows that of comms director Ashley Etienne weeks earlier, amid rumors that Peter Velz, director of press operations, and Vince Evans, deputy director of the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, are both eyeing an exit.
Sanders, 32, will leave by the end of December, but no announcement has been made on whether she has lined up another job, sparking questions over the circumstances surrounding her departure.
Harris in recent weeks has battled mounting reports that her office is in disarray, and that her team is frustrated at the White House over being handed 'no-win' tasks that don't suit her skillset.
Amid the turbulence, Sanders has been Harris' top bulldog defender, batting back at claims of internal disarray and tension with the West Wing.
Sanders told the Washington Post that her departure was not due to unhappiness but that she had 'earned a break.'
'I'm getting married next year. I would like to plan my wedding. You know, I have earned a break. So me deciding that I'm leaving has absolutely nothing to do with my unhappiness. I feel honored every single day to work for the vice president who gave me an opportunity to be her spokesperson at the highest levels.'

Charlamagne Tha God Hosting Weekly Talk Show On Comedy Central

Charlamagne Tha God is going to be a little busier. The host of The Breakfast Club will also be holding down a weekly talk show on Comedy Central.
Vulture reports that the man born Lenard McKelvey will be hosting a new weekly half-hour series that will focus on “current events and cultural issues.” Details are still being sorted and at the moment there is no solid date as to when it will premiere.
However, the goal is to get the series into production by November’s Presidential election. The series reunites Charlamagne with producer Chris McCarthy, president of the Entertainment and Youth Group at Comedy Central parent company ViacomCBS, who put Tha God on MTV2, which included stints hosting Charlamagne & Friends and Uncommon Sense. Bringing Charlamagne back into the fold is part of an attempt to “reinvent” Comedy Central.
No stranger to controversy, Charlamagne recently drew ire, and support, when Joe Biden visited The Breakfast Club and the presumed Democratic candidate for President said you weren’t really Black if you didn’t vote for him.
Speaking to Vulture, Charlamagne didn’t get into specifics about the show, but you can tell its potential direction via who he’s checking for on TV. “I love John Oliver every week, I love Bill Maher every week,” he told Vulture. “There’s something to be said about sitting back and being able to observe everything that happened in a week, and then come in say, ‘You know what? This is what I want to touch on.”
He added, “But I’m not going to be on here trying to rehash the whole week. Like, no. That’s not what I’m here for. I want to talk about the things that can actually impact somebody’s life, in a real way — the things that can actually help move the culture forward.”
The show will feature guests and interviews. Known for cutting through niceties during sit-downs (some would call it trolling), expect more of the same from TV Charlamagne.
“I’m in the business of asking the tough questions, and getting actual statements on how I see the world. And you can choose to agree or disagree. But a conversation will be started,” Charlamagne told Vulture.
