All Tomorrows/Killer Folk AU: Clara-Marie

To say Clara-Marie was dealt a bad hand would be an understatement. Born as a member of the Accursed to parents who were also Accursed, Clara-Marie's life was set up to be one of pain and disappointment. The youngest of a liter of four, she was the only Accursed child born to the Accursed circus performers Ramiro and Lara. As a result, the owner of the circus used her as an attraction with Ramiro only able to get the bare minimum protections for her. (i.e.: No one is allowed to touch her) From infancy, Clara-Marie was set up as an observable attraction that guests could ogle and gawk at. This has lead to life-long scopophobia (fear of being stared at). While life wasn't great, her parents tried their best. They made certain that their children knew that they were loved and cared for. Often using what little they had to bring joy and happiness to their small family. It all ended when Clara-Marie was roughly half a season old (around 3-4 earth years old). Raiders, the so-called Sons of Xibalba, a religious extremist sect that believed universal prosperity would only happen if the Accursed were eradicated, found out about the circus and decided to deliver "righteous justice" by making examples of the circus and its members.

It was a massacre. Clara-Marie's family was slaughtered. Her father attempted to hide here and her siblings while her mother gave them time to no avail. The only reason Clara-Marie survived it because the son that found her couldn't bring themselves to hurt a pup and so faked her death. Hiding her beneath bloodied clothes and broken tent. Too young and too confused to comprehend what was happening around her, Clara-Marie had to witness the death of her family and home; an event that left her numb for quite some time. Leaving her with no support or help. This tragedy left her with severe hemophobia (fear of blood), necrophobia (fear of dead bodies and why she only hunts small game), and fear of abandonment and anxiety. Eventually she leaves her hiding spot to search for her family only to stumble upon their remains. Miraculously, she was able to find her parents courting jewelry among their remains. Too numb to comprehend the situation, she took their jewelry, what little food and clothes she could find, and her favorite stuffed toy (an amalgamized creature made of scrap fabric created by her mother) and simply walked away from the remains of her only home. With no direction or understanding of what happened, Clara-Marie wandered alone.

As the winter season fell, frozen, starving, and numb to the world, Clara-Marie wandered to the point of exhaustion. Eventually being found by the Daughters of Circe. Typically the Daughters would take her in, but because of her frozen and frail state, the Daughters decided it was best to have a family temporarily foster her until spring when she would most likely be in better health and ready to begin her training. The family, (@rosetta222 Killer Folk oc) agreed to take Clara-Marie in until the Spring Season. She grew close to the family's oldest son, Beaumont, and they became friends despite the large age-gap. When the Spring Season came Clara-Marie was hesitant to leave with the Daughters. She had grown close with the family and was afraid to lose them. A compromise was reached where Clara-Marie would be allowed to visit and work for her foster family and still continue her training as a Daughter.

Her training was not always kind. She had understood that she was different and a child, but during her training, she began to truly understand what being an Accursed meant and how it affected her social standing. Along with her unaddressed trauma, Clara-Marie became more reserved and pulled away with her affections. Something that many members of her foster family have begun to notice and question her on. The worst came when she asked Beaumont to pretend they do not know each other while in public and treat her as a Daughter of Circe instead of as the friend and foster sibling that he had grown up with.

Areians celebrate their own variation of The Day of the Dead. It is commonly believed that every winter, the Wild Hunt arrives. Families and Clans leave out food, offerings, and memorabilia of dead relatives. The skulls and claws of dead loved ones are also left out. It is considered a sacred yet cheerful time; A time of remembrance and joy. A herd of riled up beasts are released, with families taking part in hunting them down. Whomever finds the loan pregnant female is crowned the winner and considered the leader of the Wild Hunt.

All Tomorrows/Killer Folk AU: Worldbuilding and Lore (Predator Success Rate and Afterlife)

While apex predators, Areians typically only have a 25-60% success rate. It drops hard in winter regions, hence Areians naturally building and storing body fat.

Areians don’t have an afterlife and don’t believe in a variation of Heaven or Hell. The most common belief is that the successful dead join in a variation of the Wild Hunt. With the hallowed and fallen dead becoming the Fallen. Zombie/Wendigo hybrid beings that wander the planet. Consumed by their fears, emotions, and obsessions.

All Tomorrows/Killer Folk AU: Worldbuilding - Corvids

Killer Folk/Areians share a mutualist-symbiotic relationship with the corvids. The two species evolved together, uplifting. Resulting in corvids being considered the second most intelligent sophont on the planet. Every Killer Folk/Areian has a pair of corvids. Typically getting them in late childhood-early preteen. This is a permanent bond; seen as bordering on empathic/telepathic.

Corvids are considered as parts of a Killer Folk/Areians soul. Meaning that if the corvids die or the Killer Folk/Areian dies first, the other will soon follow. What pair a Killer Folk/Areian has is considered an indicator of personality. (Similar to blood types or astrological signs on earth) The pair of corvids a Killer Folk/Areian has are typically from the same species. (Two crows, two ravens, two magpies, etc...) It is unlikely that a KillerFolk/Areian would have a pair of corvids from different species.

All Tomorrows/Killer Folk: Worldbuilding and Culture

How I think shirts/tunics work on Areia. Allows for free range of motion. Also the names of the regions of where both women live. Clara-Marie was born in the Al-Andalus Valley while Leila was born in the Nyxos Plateau.

The pine cone design on Clara-Marie’s shirt is a common symbol from her region. The pine-esque trees release their seeds from the pine cones during winter where they are then dried, fried, and or baked as a snack and sold at markets. Plus the fresh green ones can be smashed into remedial pastes or fabric dyes. So they’re an important commodity for the region, hence the image’s importance.

Leila’s design is a reference to how the sun will sit at permanent sunset during the winter months over the western mountains. While the Nyxos Plateau is famous for its plateaus, there is a mountain range to the west that prevents rains from entering the region. The arctic desert is very dry as a result. The beads she wears are a mixture of clay and copper-infused pigment. A common courting gesture in the region.

Clara-Marie’s silverware is a hand-me-down from her parents. While her father is from Al-Andalus as well, her mother wasn’t. Silversmithing was the common skill and courting practice, so her father learned it and gifted her mother the necklace and earrings as a way for her mother to still be connected to her homeland. The bangles were her mother’s gift for her father. They’re the only physical reminder she has of them and the rest of her family. 🥺😢 The vest currently doesn’t have deeper meaning, just thought the design was neat.

The sickle/khopesh is Clara-Marie’s hunting weapon of choice, plus some different ways she ties her hair back while hunting.

One of my biggest nitpicks in fiction concerns the feeding of babies. Mothers dying during/shortly after childbirth or the baby being separated form the mother shortly after birth is pretty common in fiction. It is/was also common enough in real life, which is why I think a lot of writers/readers don't think too hard about this. however. Historically, the only reason the vast majority of babies survived being separated from their mother was because there was at least one other woman around to breastfeed them. Before modern formula, yes, people did use other substitutes, but they were rarely, if ever, nutritionally sufficient.

Newborns can't eat adult food. They can't really survive on animal milk. If your story takes place in a world before/without formula, a baby separated from its mother is going to either be nursed by someone else, or starve.

It doesn't have to be a huge plot point, but idk at least don't explicitly describe the situation as excluding the possibility of a wetnurse. "The father or the great grandmother or the neighbor man or the older sibling took and raised the baby completely alone in a cave for a year." Nope. That baby is dead I'm sorry. "The baby was kidnapped shortly after birth by a wizard and hidden away in a secret tower" um quick question was the wizard lactating? "The mother refused to see or touch her child after birth so the baby was left to the care of the ailing grandfather" the grandfather who made the necessary arrangements with women in the neighborhood, right? right? OR THAT GREAT OFFENDER "A newborn baby was left on the doorstep and they brought it in and took care of it no issues" What Are You Going to Feed That Baby. Hello?

Like. It's not impossible, but arrangements are going to have to be made. There are some logistics.

Accursed: Less than .5% of the total population (5 out of 1000 individuals)

25% chance of an Accursed couple (all parents involved being Accursed) having an Accursed child

Typ parent + Accursed parent = 0% (All children will possess the recessive traits for Accursed)

2% chance of Typ parents having an Accursed child (Recessive genes/random genetic mutation)

Geographical/Interstellar features:

Most common geographical features: Mountains, Valleys, Canyons, Cliffs, and Bluffs (Two large plains/deserts exist only at the poles)

Areia revolves around a single sun with two moons circling the planet. The gravitational effects of these bodies on the planet create far more extreme tectonic activity than that of Earth. Hence, the extremes in natural features.

Names of Sun and Moons: Kem (Sun), Amaris (Larger moon), Bader (Smaller moon)

The planet is primarily land, with two supercontinents and multiple small islands

As a result of the extreme tectonic motions, the seas and ocean are almost entirely deprived of animals. Only a few bacteria, algal, and filter-feeder animals exist within the water.

Fish/Fish-like creatures primarily exist in inland streams, rivers, and lakes, but some have found niches along hydrothermal vents and similar deep-sea regions.

Expressions of Intimacy: Meaning and intensity depend on the relations of the individuals involved and how they view their relationships.

If this gets uh... *uses random number generator* 4075 notes I'll clean my rooms with before and after pictures- however here are some conditions-

1. Don't tag a ton of people, tag up to 5 people max

2. Don't reblog more than once (I don't wanna spam other people's feeds after all)

I'm serious about this, I genuinely need to clean my room but lack motivation- so yeah

All Tomorrows/Killer Folk Worldbuilding: Redesign and body types

Clara, now renamed Cerise has a revamped design and story!

I’ve always enjoyed the look of the inverted triangle on women so Cerise gets to have it! I also renamed her because otherwise she and Clara-Marie would’ve had the same name and it would’ve been confusing.

Her outfit hints at her new backstory. She is the daughter of first-generation factory herders. Since prey is the main food source for killer folk, factory herders took advantage and created ranches to house hundreds of animals. (For most clans and families, only a small herd of farm stock was necessary since even most settlers still hunted wild stock.) The money for said business comes from the fact that many families and clans now don’t need to hunt or care for their own stock. They can rely on ranches to supply the goods and resources for them. Cerise would become considered a nevue riche/new money. Most traditionalists hate ranchers. They take up stock, mess with their streams (hunting patterns/travel patterns), and many worry that this isn’t good for the environment along with a host of other spiritual, cultural, and religious concerns.

With this new concept of wealth and status, Cerise can dress and wear ‘impractical clothing’. She doesn’t work as hard and often hosts parties. Her gloves are a symbol of her status; covered fingers symbolizing her lack of a need to do hard work. Same with her shoes. (The heel does nothing. It’s just a fashion statement.) She holds an air of Southern gentry and lady-like politeness. Love telling jokes and stories. Unlike much of her family, she still has respect for the old ways and sees her lifestyle as one of many ways a person could live. She is being courted; it’s an arranged marriage set up by her parents to another ranch family. (Yup. Building monopolies already)
