BOOK REVIEW: THE DAUGHTERS OF BLOCK ISLAND by Christa Carmen
When I was offered this book through Amazon First Reads, I jumped at it for several reasons. First, I love gothic fiction. Second, I write gothic fiction. And, third, I lived on an unconnected island off the coast of Maine for seven years and loved it. Thus, this novel appeared to be right in my wheelhouse. The story begins when Blake Bronson, who was given up at birth, arrives on Block Island…

The result is a chaotic web sparkling in saltwater and suffering. Setting is essential - and I will come to that - but the commonalities that exist between the stories go beyond space; recurring themes and motifs allow Johnson to dive deep into the essence of humanity and explode, viciously, out of its fleshy confines. 🐟 Through themes of femininity, sexuality, pregnancy, and motherhood a deliciously feminist exploration of the physical, visceral body appears across narratives. Memory, communication, language and words provide a linguistic exploration of human horror, unravelling constructs of physicality and reality. 🐟 The collection thus creates a complex, fractured, and unsettling picture of the Fenlands. It is cosy and uncanny in a single breath. The sense of place is strong and consuming. I feel now that I know the Fens; I know now that I felt the Fens in every word I read. 🐟 Geographically situated in the east of England, the Fenlands are a costal plain - they are marshy and flat, situated close to sea level and seemingly unending. The Fens have ecological superpowers, absorbing storms; in the liminal space of Johnson's 'Fen' these storms break into a haunting masterpiece. 🐟 To @new_gothic_review: THANK YOU! What a wonderful recommendation... all that time ago. 🐟 If you're yet to read it, I urge you: do so! And if you've read it, help me to place it: geographical, ecological, or folk horror? weird fiction? magic realism? Where do the 'Fens' exist? . #fen #daisyjohnson #shortstories #bookstagram #bookreview #generallygothic #ecohorror #folkhorror #thefens #fenlands #weirdfiction #magicrealism #summerreads #spookynerd #contemporarygothic https://www.instagram.com/p/CRouXqgr0EL/?utm_medium=tumblr

It's also about the the strength and power of girls' intelligence. It's about the terrible danger of suppressing it. About the trap of pretending it doesn't exist. It's a book full of poison. And not just the kind that comes in pills and powders, either. Taint will be officially on sale by the end of the week. Still can't quite get my head around that. I have been tucked up with 'In the Night Wood' - a fairy tale, an ode to literature, and a tragedy of loss articulated through magical realism, the gothic, fantasy and, I hope, folk horror too... I'll save further comment until I'm done. 👻 It has been a perfectly Novemeber-y day; Halloween lingers in the air, the spooky season is in full swing and Christmas and winter seem suddenly close. 👻 I also aattended a fascinating lecture on Victorian and Edwardian female authors of ghost stories. The Christmas tradition of spectral storytelling of course came up, as did one fine British gentleman - a staunch supporter of his female contemporaries. I imagine Sinclair would consider his own tales well told too... 👻 Today's image serves as a conceptual depiction of November, existing between the Tradition of Terror and Decadence and Decay. It is also a sneaky little #thespookynerdsbookclub spoiler for the upcoming readalong, which @rabbitheartedreader, @engaginglit, & I are getting increasingly excited about cohosting next month! Details coming soon... 👻 🤔: Are you breaking the "rules" and embracing Christmas/seasonal/holiday traditions early this year? If so, I salute you in your festive rebellion! 🤔: Does the fact that 'attitude' is quoted in inverted commas lead anyone else to assume Sinclair is being consciously attitude-y (and love her for it)? . #natureisgothic #folkhorror #contemporarygothic #dalebailey #inthenightwood #bookstagram #englishliterature #victorianliterature #edwardianliterature #christmas #halloween #spookynerds #bookblogger #bookclub #readalong #teaser #spoiler #ghoststories #femaleauthors #charlesdickens #achristmascarol #classicliterature #decemberreads #maysinclair https://www.instagram.com/p/CHlf6fsgb3W/?igshid=1f8ums1we5rm8

"𝕳𝖊 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖉 𝖒𝖊. 𝕾𝖆𝖎𝖉 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖜𝖔𝖗𝖉𝖘 𝖆𝖑𝖔𝖚𝖉 - 𝖆𝖓𝖌𝖗𝖞 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖓𝖔𝖓𝖘𝖊𝖓𝖘𝖎𝖈𝖆𝖑 𝖇𝖔𝖙𝖍. 𝕺𝖛𝖊𝖓; 𝖖𝖚𝖊𝖆𝖘𝖞; 𝖈𝖆𝖘𝖙𝖑𝖊." - Gillian Flynn 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 I knew nothing about 'Sharp Objects' when I began reading it. Reading it on audio I didn't even skim a blurb; in fact, I still haven't. I blindly trusted @southerngothicdollhouse 🖤, and discovered a tale deep and harrowing, with southern [gothic] familiarity contorted into something new. As I have mentioned across the very, very few posts I've managed to muster thus far this busy month (!), October's exploration into our 🎃Tradition of Terror🎃 has evolved into an examination of storytelling... And 'Sharp Objects' couldn't have been a more fitting [coincidental] selection. Flynn explores storytelling - how we carry our stories and our terrors with us - with such uniqueness; it's a bold metaphor that manages to maintain nuance. It's revealed in slow, intimate glimpses - a flash of flesh, a secret shared. The quote I've used above was an "ahhh, wonderful!" moment for me - it was about as subtle as the slash of a knife, and was perfect in its wounding obviousness. I transcribed the words from audio; I've not checked them against Flynn's and I'm not going too... somehow it just feels right on this weird journey with storytelling that I'm currently on. ✂️ I don't recall seeing Sharp Objects discussed around here (it was published in 2006 - I'm probably just late!), so I'm not going in full spoilers blazing, but if you have read it [Terry Tibbs voice:] talk to me 👇. ✂️ 🤔: I'd love to know how you felt about the visual representation of storytelling, about the way Camille carries her story, about the realism (if indeed there is any) in the grotesque metaphor! ✂️ And if you've not read Sharp Objects: 🤔: What's the last story you ingested with no preexisting knowledge? Was it a success?! . #sharpobjects #latetotheparty #bookstagram #bookreview #traditionofterror #horrorfiction #contemporarygothic #southerngothic #americangothic #storytelling #selfharm #murder #gillianflynn #bookworm #spookynerd #spookyreads #currentlyreading #audiobooks #spookynerd #gothic #generallygothic #mentalhealth https://www.instagram.com/p/CGa25K0AHWb/?igshid=id4nt2qsr9hm

Sarah Perry's 'The Essex Serpent' was the talk of the town (by which I mean critics, journalists, and awarding bodies) when it was published in 2016. Not one for 'bestsellers' and 'must-buys', I waited for a 3rd-hand hand-me-down to be handed to me, which it recently was, with positive reviews. Set in 1893, 'The Essex Serpent' follows a strong-willed female protagonist who is excessively 'un-Victorian' in an England that excessively is so. She is named 'Cora' presumably for Persephone [known alternatively as 'Kora', or 'Cora'], the Greek goddess of Spring, and queen, alongside Hades, of the Underworld. She is named 'Seaborne', I assume, in retreating to the Blackwater marshes of rural Aldwinter on the Essex coast to find herself, to seek rebirth. Persephone's is a narrative of abduction, love, grief, and celebration... as is Cora's. Perry elaborately constructs a world at once magical and realistic, but the plot itself begins to flounder toward the third act. Cora is presented as a strong-headed, wild-haired, heavy-booted woman, even by modern standards, but she too gets washed up in female-lead-character clichés. All in all, 'The Essex Serpent' was a thoroughly enjoyable read that I would recommend with disclaimers such as 'light' or 'pleasure'. 3.5/5. But also: 0/🐉 - not enough serpents 0/🖤 - too much romance 🤔: What do you think: Does the drama & history of Cora Seaborne's name weigh too heavily upon her broad shoulders? Is it smart, or heavy-handed? 'Seaborne' made me groan, but I love OTT little things like this that show the author's singular focus. . #generallygothic #gothic #ofmonstersandmen #monster #monsters #theessexserpent #sarahperry #bestseller #bookworm #books #bookstagram #bookreview #bookrecommendation #bookquote #booknerd #englishliterature #contemporarygothic #historicalfiction #historynovel #victorianliterature #victorian #gothicnovel #serpent #persephone #greekmythology #greekgoddess #hades #strongfemaleprotagonist #strongfemale #feminist https://www.instagram.com/p/B1pDlETAtJ-/?igshid=1mqjfbez63afr
