@dcviated asked:
What are honey's music tastes like?
...which I'm finally answering as it combines neatly with this question, asked by anonymous: what is a genre of music your muse won't listen to?
So, first and foremost, I present:
Which is still a fledgling at best, but the process of me trying to figure out a good response to this question is simply going and listening to a TON of music and laying there, thinking to myself, would Honey like this song?
Honey likes music that has a lot going on. That can mean folktronica / epic fantasy-style scores, organ-heavy metal tracks, or whimsical jazz-infused tunes the like of which you'd find on a katamari soundtrack. Dance/Electronic stuff tends to dominate, but she's almost certainly something of a K-pop / J-pop girlie as well. Enjoys following idols, and can get into the groove of almost anything that's up-tempo and jammin' enough.
When it comes to songs with lyrics, that "tempo" note is nearly a rule. She'd tell you there are exceptions in every category, and she hesitates to completely brush aside any genre at large, but she generally doesn't listen to a lot of straight folk music, nor country, singer-songwriter-y, and even more classic jazz fare because sleepy, languid vocals don't do it for her. Doesn't go in for much classic rock, either, though there are more than a few exceptions she's heard in time.
That said, when it comes to purely instrumental tracks, her taste opens up again. Lo-fi hip hop beats, wandering piano tracks, anything that has a good melody and steady rhythm to it can find its way into her circulation— and she has a great fondness for orchestral or otherwise instrumental pieces which make her feel like she's in her own little romantic drama, or perhaps in a light-hearted, brightly-hued video game. See the Cosmic Cove Galaxy track above, and Balamb Garden. Honey loves singing along to songs when she's casually going about a task or riding/walking somewhere, but if she's really focused on her work or some-such, she prefers instrumental stuff.
Some harder, edgier tunes can sneak in from time to time, (i.e. the referenced metal dabblings), but it's also worth nothing that most of the music she listens to is playful. It might be light and chipper and whimsical, or punchy and exciting (like OTONABLUE), or even sort of gentle and sweet as in Farewell by Erikson Jayanto; but in sum... it mostly matches her, and the sort of personality she exudes— her brand is consistent.
**(note: the music just has to SOUND bright and fun. the lyrics/subject of the song may actually be much darker, but if it's sung in the right key and vibe? lyrics are secondary baby!)

Once you get this, you have to say five things you like about yourself, publicly. Then you have to send this to ten of your favourite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool~) 🌈🌈
First off, thanks for this! ❤️ yaaaay an ask game!!!
Second... OH MY GOD five things Iike about myself?! This is going to be hard. But my therapist would be so happy to know I've been given this challenge, haha.
And of course, I have to provide details and addendums to these because I have to treat everything like a personal essay. Ugh.
I am a loud cringe nerd
I have fun facts for days, if not weeks
Music is my religion
I bet I can make you laugh
I understand my narrative
Longer answers under the cut.
I am not afraid to show enthusiasm/honesty and be loud. You know the part of your brain that tells you to not do embarrassing/cringe/over-the-top-thing before you do it? I am not going to try and diagnose it but that literally does not exist for me. I will sing along loudly to songs in public; I am the person at a wedding who never leaves the dancefloor; I dress in bright colors and wear the weirdest prints; I will laugh or cry uncontrollably if the moment calls for it. I am incapable of holding back positivity and excitement. I will gush about how great something or someone is. If I like your shoes, I am 100% going to tell you, no fear. All of this can make life really fun. It attracts people with good energy into my orbit. It makes me feel like the last thing I am is boring - but I also go home and regret every minute of it because of the second-hand embarrassment later. Somehow all these things are wrong to do in my head (even though I am never moved like this by negativity, fear, or hate), yet I cannot stop myself from doing them. I loathe that I am a book with a broken spine that cannot stay closed. I hate every inch of space I take up. I cannot stop being vulnerable which is great for therapy but not so great for being a normal, functioning adult. I fear sometimes that people think that I believe my thoughts are all-important because I share them all. Nope. I just literally have no choice in the matter. The thoughts and actions pop into my head and they must be heard/done.
I am an endless fountain of "fun" facts because I am interested in a lot of stuff and love to learn. I think "did you know that..." is my most used phase. If I have a fun fact on a subject, you will know (it's something else I feel I have no control over). My hand will be up if I don't just blurt it out. And I am always rolling them up in my Katamari-Ball brain, listening to podcasts, reading articles, watching documentaries, and other videos. I remember these weird fringe things but then I will forget your name and your job. Don't tell me what you're into because I AM going to do a deep dive and suddenly be an expert in it. Tbh it's a great skill for a writer, but I am pretty sure it annoys people around me. Especially when all the fun facts are related to whatever I am obsessed with at the moment. You'll never guess what I have way too many fun facts about right now.
I connect with music, so strongly it's almost spiritual. Singing and listening to music have always been my go-to coping skills. I learned to drive very late in life (at 30 - but that is a story for another day) and at first I was a horribly anxious driver. But once I realized my car could become my little mobile box of music where I could just belt it out 24/7, I learned to love driving. Lyrics help me understand the prism of my experience and others. I love when songs make me dance, or cry, or give me goosebumps. My shower is my favorite place in my new house because of the great acoustics; plus, there is enough space to pull off an entire shower concert, complete with choreography. Concerts and karaoke make me feel like I am connected to the universe and everyone in the venue. I love my taste in music, which sounds weird, but I am just so proud of my eclectic taste. Also! I am mad skilled at identifying songs and artists and samples, probably because I have listened to so. Much. Music. The downside to this one is that I emotionally connect so thoroughly with every song that I enjoy that a bad association will make the song/artist or even the genre unbearable to listen to (see: country music). Also, some people in my life don't understand why I prioritize concerts so highly and are very critical of me for it. I can't help that a concert is the closest thing I have to a church!
I have a great sense of humor (or at least I think so). If you have followed me for more than two seconds, you have probably figured out that I am constantly attempting (and hopefully succeeding?) to be funny. I try VERY HARD to make people laugh. If you were to talk to me in real life, you'd quickly discover that I would come up with puns in our conversation like we're having a funny rap battle. My favorite tools are wordplay and re-contextualization but I also have quote upon quote and will use physical humor, too. The good thing is that I can make myself laugh, for sure. Like I said yesterday, I embody Chrysippus. A lot of comedians claim their jokes are hiding pain. I've recently realized that I use my humor a little differently--since my social anxiety has convinced me that no one in the world wants anything to do with me at any given moment, I use my jokes as sort of a litmus test. If you're laughing, there is a very strong chance that you don't actively hate me at that very moment. I think this strategy probably annoys people and probably comes off at inappropriate. Don't bring me to a funeral.
I can contextualize my personal story. Somewhere between taking autobiography/memoir and essay classes in college and over a decade of therapy, I've become exquisitely good at taking an event in my life or facet of my personality and placing it in the context of my life. Does that make sense? Like in high school English class I took so much joy out of reading a novel and analyzing character motivations and author intent and "why is the wallpaper yellow." I am still very good at reading something and identifying symbolism, but now I mostly use this same skill to look back at the story of my life and find patterns and connections. I think this will help me as an Art Therapist, and, if my personal essays and posts are actually any good, then it is helping me as a writer as well. But this is a double-edged sword in therapy. It means I can sit in the chair and practically therapize myself. But lives are not novels. We are not characters. Sometimes the wallpaper is just yellow. My over-cerebral approach to my understanding of self makes me come off as "not sick enough" in some settings--I've been told by peers and staff many times while in treatment, "Why are you here? You seem fine!" Well, the truth is, just because you understand why the monster is in the book, you can't always outrun it. Sure, it can help to know where the monster came from and why he's chasing you, but if you get too caught up in that it may slow you down. Or you will run the wrong way because you are so sure you understand him. Or you will run so well that no one will notice you are running at all.

Spring of Ingo, March, Day 1: RXR
Ingo and video games!
Unexpectedly, I actually have something. Mostly complete! And on time, even!
This is actually something I wrote last May that I touched up for the event. It was the first thing I'd written in... gosh, at least ten years? And I wasn't a super active writer even back then. So it's pretty rough, even by my standards.
It was more an experiment with the twins' voices than anything else. I doubt that it'd come out the same if I wrote it today, but I remember having oodles of fun with it at the time. (Pokemonifying a Katamari level was unexpectedly interesting!)
So even if it's a little rough, a lot silly, and not exactly aligned with even my own headcanons, I'm still pretty fond of it.
Anyways! Onwards!
--
Emmet glanced up from his Xtrans once the tune for the new level began.
“What is the goal?” he asked.
“For this stage, I am tasked with creating an ‘elegant’ constellation,” Ingo informed him. “It seems that I am searching for Swanna and various other Flying-types, due to the natural grace and beauty that bird Pokemon posses.”
Emmet glanced over at Archeops, who was, at present, pouring all of her dexterity into jamming her head into an empty paper towel roll that she had dug out of the garbage. Then he turned to Ingo with a bland smile that said volumes.
Ingo returned the look with one of his own before turning back to the television to begin his mission in earnest. “Grace is in the eye of the beholder,” he said, beginning the stage by carefully maneuvering his Katamari to aim for the small eggs scattered throughout the level. “As such, it can take many forms.”
Emmet kept his gaze pointedly on Ingo as the sound of a beak tearing through cardboard, followed by a despairing squawk, echoed through their living room.
Ingo did not respond. He was doing important work, here.
And he most certainly did not smirk when Archeops dropped a soggy chunk of cardboard directly onto Emmet’s lap, causing him to jerk in mixed surprise and disgust.
She was looking at up him with wide, pleading eyes as she rested her chin on the couch. Clearly, Archeops had the utmost faith that Emmet would be able to fix her new toy.
Making a noise somewhere between a choke and a hiss, Emmet delicately plucked the mangled corpse of what was once a perfectly serviceable cardboard tube off his leg and brought it towards the kitchen—speeding up and holding his other hand under the trash to catch the droplets once he realized how thoroughly sopping the mess was.
Archeops cheerfully followed him, circling his legs and remaining wholly unaware of what a darling menace she was.
The Katamari on the screen brushed just a little too close to one of the Rattata too large for it to absorb, and several of his gathered items were knocked loose. Drat. Now he had to scramble to re-gather the eggs before they disappeared.
(Hah. Scrambled eggs.)
Ingo could hear Emmet lightly scolding Archeops in the next room as he disposed of the tube, likely making sure to secure the lid of the trash can to prevent future break-ins, before moving on to wash his hands and then heading down the hall towards his room.
After a few minutes, Emmet returned to the couch. Out of the corner of his eye, Ingo saw that his twin was now sporting a clean pair of sweatpants— which were quickly covered up by Archeops as she clambered up on to the couch and made herself at home on Emmet’s lap.
Emmet heaved a beleaguered sigh that was belied by way his expression softened and the gentle hands that began scratching at the spot along her side that she liked. Archeops chirped in pleasure as she rolled to lean into his hand, her eyes drifting shut.
“She still believes herself to be the size of an Archen,” Ingo observed fondly. His attention returned to the game just in time for him to avoid an obstacle in his intended path.
Huffing a laugh, Emmet brought his other hand up to lightly rub his fingers along Archeops’ head. She leaned into that attention too. “She is a big baby,” he agreed affectionately.
After a few moments of peaceful silence, Emmet asked, “...Why did a Swanna just hatch from that Chansey egg?”
“I believe it is a misdirection tactic,” Ingo says. “Swanna are the most important Pokemon to gather, but they are all hidden in Chansey eggs; there are also Pidgey among the lot, and quite a few soft-boiled eggs as well.”
Ingo misjudged the angle of descent and sent his Katamari tumbling off the roof of the building. No matter; there were plenty of items to gather in the yard section.
After watching for a few more moments, Emmet said, “You are gathering dandelions. Those are not Flying-type Pokemon.”
“I am simply gathering those to increase the size of my Katamari. The larger it is, the lower the odds that a valuable item will get knocked from it in the event of a collision. Additionally, a larger Katamari makes it easier to traverse throughout the level.”
Emmet hummed as Ingo wedged the Katamari underneath the porch. “Really.”
“...Generally, that is the case,” Ingo admitted.
“Your task is to gather Flying types. You are gathering plants. You are going to get scolded.”
“Perhaps, perhaps not. We shall see what station I reach once the time limit is up.”
Emmet turned to give him a faux-serious look, the effect enhanced by the flatness of his voice when he says, “Father is going be be upset.”
Ingo choked, sputtering on laughter so loud and sudden that Archeops was startled out of her doze.

I really like Goat Simulator, and I can't wait for Goat Simulator 3, which, as of the time I am typing this, releases in a week. To commemorate the occasion, I have decided to provide a list of my favorite mutators from the first game and what they do.
With Demon Goat, you can essentially play Katamari. If you ragdoll, you will spin in donuts vertically upward.
Repulsive Goat allows you to blow everyone away by your smell, plus after you unlock it, you can hangout with knockoff versions of the ninja turtles. If you ragdoll, you fly and become a limb-stretched abomination.
Tornado Goat allows you to spin things around yourself. If you ragdoll, you will spin in donuts horizontally upward in intervals that are similar to the engine of a lawn mower starting.
Double Jump allows you to perform an extra jump in midair. It's really helpful and is unlocked when you first start the game.
Robot Goat turns you into a robot from Sanctum. I just really like the goofy smile.
Hitchhiker Goat is a reference to my most favorite book of all time, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". You gain a towel with the number 42 on it and the ability to make whales fall from the sky.
Goatborn is a reference to Skyrim. Goatborn allows you to perform a special scream that launches anything in range.
Deadgoa7 is a reference to Deadmau5. With Deadgoa7, you can trigger music that will make any humans start dancing on the spot!
Wheel Goat is exclusive to the MMO Simulator DLC. Wheel Goat allows you to stop time anytime you want. I like pairing this with Goatborn and gazing at the humans' lack of a spine!
Old Goat is exclusive to the MMO Simulator DLC. You are just straight up a Tyrannosaurus Rex. No need to elaborate on it further.
Good Goat and Father Goat are exclusive to the Waste of Space DLC and are also references to Star Wars. These two are kinda similar to Devil Goat. Good Goat pushes away and Father Goat pulls toward.
Milky Way Goat is exclusive to the Waste of Space DLC. You are a cow with the ability to levitate items in the air.
Professor Goat is exclusive to the Waste of Space DLC and a great tribute to Stephen Hawking. Professor Goat allows you to launch black holes. Entering the black hole on the Waste for Space map is a one-way ticket to the far reaches of space. Entering the black hole and ragdolling on other maps will cause your goat to completely freak out.
Dolph Spagetti is exclusive to the Payday DLC. Dolph Spagetti is a dolphin in a wheelchair that can pretty much scale any wall or ceiling with ease. As you can tell, this mutator is extremely helpful.
Rocket Attacher is exclusive to the Payday DLC. This mutator launches rockets that send any unsuspecting human, goat, or object careening into the sky. Launch enough rockets really quickly and you might even get some rocket attached to yourself!
Cat is exclusive to the Payday DLC. This makes PNG's of cats appear on the sides along with a meow sound effect.
Hopefully this was a trip down memory lane for you! Here's to another 8+ years of Goat Simulator!

47. Gobble-UP
"All right, this is cute, something silly to relax by, but nothing special I guess. Adorable art, though!" She goes to the first request next, Gobble Up! "Ok parasite fans, I think your favorite character is incoming!"
DueyDecimal: YAY TAPEWORMS HNV: yaypworms Baconnaise: Tapworms. as in I wanna tap dat worm
Perhaps surprisingly, no. This is another Pac-Man style game, but the main character is... A big capital letter G? And the first level is very small, almost cramped. Just run around and eat up junk food scattered around the maze to win!
"...Oh. This game brought to you by the letter... J, oddly enough. Well it was G's idea, J just donated to make it real. It's a nice story, really"
berd_snurglar: Time for some Greed and Gluttony Llord_Kuruku: wow, truffle fries? cronuts? The letter G has expensive tastes THE_BOMBER: bea u need to go on a diet after this!!
"I thought I was supposed to be doing this BEFORE I had the baby but oh well"
The first level is completed easily. The second one is bigger and more complex, and now there's enemies: THERE'S your friends the tapeworms! You can eat them without trouble, but if they get into the food, it becomes poisonous. Also, the junk food is getting bigger-- hams, cakes, turduckens!
"Nomnomnomnom, this is certainly more to my own tastes than eating stuff out of someone's guts like last time but hey, to each their own" She ferociously defends a large cake from the worms, difficult because it's such a big target and you have to eat it one layer at a time!
Two levels down! The third level is even bigger, in fact the screen has to scroll to get it all... and now the food is a lot less food-like. Bea can tell what the icons are supposed to represent, but the messages when you eat them aren't subtle about it.
YOU ATE: A CAT YOU ATE: A PIGEON
aroseahorseboy: dude this G needs dexatrim or something HNV: Bea, push yourself away from the table. You've had enough.
"OKAYYY, now we're getting a little outside my usual snack preferences but all right, why not."
"I feel like this is the bizarre offspring of katamari and a sesame street sketch"
Chillarmy_The_Bee: omnomnom, cookies! and animals! berd_snerglar: animal crackers in your soup
Next stage is at least three screens wide, and this time... yup. You guessed it:
YOU ATE: CHILD
"This is the second game in a row where I'm eating children, not sure how to feel about that. Not a big veal fan"
DOG. GRANDMA. OTHER DOG. ANGSTY TEEN. "Mmm, I can taste the emo."
Every stage seems to double the size of the maze, and the maze gets less symmetrical each time, this latest one has a big bulge leading out of one side with just a single food item! But it's a big one-- VOLKSWAGEN.
"G is for German Ingenuity! NOMPH!"
HNV: Guys, Bea is really enjoying this, I'm worried DueyDecimal: This is someone's fetish
"Oh like none of you ever dreamed of eating a car. Or... a truck, holy crap. What's gonna be next, a house?? ..OH. "
SPLIT-LEVEL... SLUM... LUXURY APARTMENT... always with that digitized munching, gulping sound!
"Ok now this is getting silly. I bet the G was something else originally, otherwise this just doesn't really make sense. S'fun, though!"
The number of tapeworms increases with each stage, but it takes more and more of them to poison even one food item-- by the sixth stage you're munching your way through veritable rivers of them, yet the icon they're headed for takes forever to turn blue! No wonder, either-- YOU ATE: BANGOR
"Again, I'd have to be really trying to lose thing. And there goes Maine, and the rest of the East coast, sorry East bees but a G's gotta eat I guess. Maybe I'll turn into a new planet?"
Again, it really is the drudgery that's the major foe in this game-- the mazes are HUGE, the monsters do no damage, and it takes about ten minutes to complete the last stage as you're eating up NAMIBIA... UKRAINE... DENMARK... CALIFORNIA...
"Come on, give me a challenge here! What about a really gross state or country? I bet the midwest is kind of fatty and flavorless, like their food. And there goes any viewers I might have over there, sorry!"
SugaGlydah: No, you're right, we're like a hot dish but colder
And here's the tenth and presumably final stage-- it sprawls and sprawls, seeming to go on for screens in every direction before you get to: THE MOON.
Klickitat_Street: if this was supposed to be a lesson in distance between planets, you better move on...
"Yellow hearts, pink clovers, giant rocky moons! Come along Gromit"
"Juuust waiting for something to happen here.. Maybe I won already?" The Bea G searches about the maze, it seems to go on forever! "A dessert tray? I'll take a mint.. How about just a tooth pick? For my letter teeth."
HNV: well, the G isn't getting any thinner... I'm starting to suspect you're out of game.
But just in time, there's something! It's tiny, but it's something! It's... (137924) 2000 BD19.
Llord_Kuruku: I googled it... wow. That's obscure
Bea looks up from her phone. "It's a- yeah. Looks crunchy!" She moves the G over it. "Ok seriously what is going here?! I've gone from snack foods to asteroids, there's worms again, I still don't know what's going on here but I'm pretty sure I'm winning"
Baconnaise: Space is big, Bea. Really, really big.
"What, that's not it?" She keeps moving. "Oh man... Oh man, COME ON!"
berd_snerglar: it's a very long way to Venus
"...You know, we each have a finite amount of time in this world." she says, moving the G through screen after screen of nothingness. "I don't think pulling a Unicron is worth it, beez. Time to play something else?"
aroseahorseboy: oh man what if Unicron really did just start out as someone who was REALLY HUNGRY and ate all the food in the house
"He did go on to found PlanetEaters Anonymous after retirement, it's a known fact."
aroseahorseboy: hey, play quizdo or whatever, that sounds kooky Baconnaise: at least we know what to expect from the pinball one
"Gibdos it is!"

I love Lonely Rolling Star, despite never having played Katamari Damacy. a cheery, upbeat tune about a lover's longing for her significant other, who is constantly rolling along in life, and eventually rolls away from her. but she lives in the hope that he will one day coming rolling back to her.
I always get nervous about doing a song justice with my arrangements, but I think this one came out okay. admittedly, it was a little rushed to make the 12 Days event in time, but it sounds decent enough. I'm probably going to make a full version sometime in the future.
it's got vague allusions to yesterday's Samus story, and almost completely omits the song's main melody for a more grand, yet ambient feel. I hope you like it!

Chapter 8 Reflections
I haven't made digital prototypes for games - but I've made a lot of prototypes for apps when developing user interfaces, etc and had real users test these early into the development cycle, so I feel as though a digital game prototype would be very similar to create. Side note - Felton seems particularly fond of the game Spore, which personally I didn't enjoy - and don't remember my friends enjoying - despite the critical acclaim. The character creation is fun but I didn't find the game engaging beyond that. It also doesn't really hold up for me now that there are so many games with detailed character creation systems - which I personally find exhausting. I don't want to spend hours making my character before I've even experienced the gameplay. Funny that I mentioned in Chapter 7 how I think adding some aesthetics is valuable in prototyping (in my experience) and this seemed to contradict what Felton was saying... But here I am on Page 244 and it appears that they actually agree with me! Perhaps not entirely, but I like that it's not cut and dry on the rules. In regards to controls - I feel like there's a stigma around simple games. That is - there's almost an expectation that every button on the controller will do something. I mentioned Death Squared earlier - It is a very simple game where you only really need the two joysticks, just like Katamari. Most of the other buttons are accessory buttons which fill the time through different poses, etc, but have no real function to the game. Most consoles have a relatively similar controller designer with roughly the same amount of buttons - of course with notable differences like the playstation's touch screen and the Wii's motion controls. It's interesting to think about how much the controller dominates design decisions, since it's something that's not really up to the game designer.
Tumblr media
A bit unrelated but also a shout out to all the various designers referencing the fact they're total insomniacs. WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY!? :') I like the idea of making your prototype in a different programming language that won't be compatible with the one you intend to use for the real product. Reducing temptations is a necessity in all things, like how if you want to lose weight then you should only buy healthy snacks so you're not giving yourself the option to go for the cookies instead of the apple.
Exercise 8.1: What Do You Need to Prototype? This question made me realise a fatal flaw in my initial game idea - I touted how it could be multiplayer, and how the powers of the dog and cat would be fun to switch between, but shy of mentioning they can stand on each others backs, I didn't think about designing puzzles/challenges that rely on using both characters at the same time (or at least frequently swapping between them) - and I think that's important since completing one section as the cat and then another as the dog until the level is finished, like I had originally envisioned, probably wouldn't end up being all that fun.
I'd never heard of Killer Queen but it sounds really fun - And they have one of the coolest website designs I've ever seen (https://killerqueenarcade.com). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any in Brisbane so I don't think I'll be able to try it any time soon. I feel like you COULD make a physical prototype of Tetris. Cut out the shapes, stack them in a pile, set a sand timer or a looping timer that imitates how quickly you need to rotate and place each piece... I think there's even a Tetris card game (although I haven't played it) - That seems like it'd be faster to build than a digital prototype - but at this point maybe I'm just being a contrarian. I guess making a physical Tetris prototype is a challenge to myself, just to see how it might be done and prove the point.
Tumblr media
Combining physical and digital prototypes seems optimal to me! The point about not using any literal constants is standard for programming in general and not restricted to Game Design best practice. I guess a lot of this is revision for me - at least in regards to software engineering.
I love the premise for a game merely being to evoke feelings of relaxation. Animal Crossing is definitely my go to game for this. I have a tough time explaining the objective of Animal Crossing to people. Although there's certainly goals, I don't play or enjoy Animal Crossing to get a sense of achievement. It's just a low pressure, relaxing time. It sounds like I'd also enjoy That Cloud Game. I always thought Tennis for Two was the first video game - created in 1958, 4 years before Spacewar. Also big shout out to the bongo drum controls from Donkey Kong! Truly the greatest controller ever designed. I'm obviously joking but Rhythm games do tend to have innovative controls in general. Another fun mention is the Rifle from the Magnavox Odyssey - Which had bans placed on it due to how realistic it looked. No bright orange cap on that puppy.
Tumblr media
Exercise 8.2: Original Game Controls For the Switch! Funny that I mentioned before how developers must feel pressure to have an action for every button... And in this exercise it's a requirement! A: Jump B: Jump Y: Run X: Run ZR: Switch Character R: Peek to the right ZL: Switch Character L: Peek to the left Left Joystick: Move character D-Pad: Move character Start: Pause (Main Menu) Select: Pause (Map) Right Joystick: Adjust Camera
I love text based adventure games. They're surprisingly challenging to design well. My early fondness came from Choose Your Own Adventure books. It was always fun to re-read and see what the different outcomes could have been. Text based adventure games added extra layers to that, where the computer could keep track of various items you had and things you'd done. I feel like in some ways it's easier to make a fun game utilising a graphical game engine, than it was to make a text based game engaging. Many RPGs still kind of feel like text based games, just with a GUI to engage with instead of a CLI. Still, I fondly remember engaging with early "GUI" games, such as Game and Watch or Snake, that had no real graphics to speak of but utilised calculator screens in innovative ways.
Tumblr media
List of Views: Overhead: Looking directly down at the characters(Also called Birds Eye) Side View: Think side-scroller games like Mario, Donkey Kong, etc. But also many puzzle games like Tetris. Isometric View: Popular in Strategy games. Think Warcraft. First-Person View: You are your character. Commonly seen in FPS games. Third-Person View: You directly control your character, but in a 3D world with the camera following closely behind the player character. Think modern Zelda games.
Exercise 8.3: Viewpoint Side View is the viewpoint that I envisioned for my game - which is a side-scrolling platformer. Nothing too original about that, I know, but it's the feel that I want to strive for - and if it ain't broke...
I've always found the heads-up display for an inventory (especially in RPG games) being represented as a back-pack kind of funny. In one sense, yes, it's a good metaphor for where your player is carrying items. In another sense, it's very easy to view it as a literal backpack your character has despite the fact that it's rarely included on the character model - and that it almost always can carry an unrealistic amount of items. This is technically no different to how a folder on a computer can store an unlimited amount of files (well, assuming there is physical room on the hard drive of the computer) but the association is a little different when you think about what happens to the items your character is picking up.
Tumblr media
Exercise 8.4: Metaphors My HUD is probably going to end up having bones/fish to keep track of the collectibles within the stages. I haven't planned out a combat system or anything yet, so I haven't decided if there will be hit points, and it's hard to decide if I'd stick with the tried and true red bar or red hearts for this or do something a bit different. The save/home icon will definitely be a kennel, though.
Exercise 8.5: Natural Mapping A red bar for health, like I just mentioned, is probably one example. We spoke in the tutorial in Week 2 about how red means health, green means mana/energy, and these are just such prosaic aspects now that it'd be poor design to change them.
Exercise 8.7: Feedback in Your Game Aural feedback is definitely what I've come to expect from games - but I think for accessibility it's also great to have subtle visual feedback (such as an action you've selected becoming highlighted until it is completed/cancelled) so I'll be sure to include both.
Part about learning programming isn't a stress for me - but a fun tidbit is that I actually learned to program starting with Apple's Swift Playgrounds on my iPad, which is a little puzzle video game that you complete by writing code. It teaches swift, specifically, so that you can develop for Apple - but I think it's a great little introductory programming course, particularly for Game Design students.
Can't resist the urge to point out that GDevelop isn't included in the list of Game Engine tools recommended by Fullerton... :P Not that I have any problems with using it! I have dabbled with GameMaker: Studio, Unreal Engine, Unity and also good old PyGame (which is technically more of a library than a game engine but still does a lot of the hard work for you) - This textbook shows its age when it promotes the use of Flash... Which technically no longer exists! How times change. Shout out to Scratch, though. The master of all programming languages.
Tumblr media
I've had such a good time with level editors in the past. It's very easy to get sucked into them since they are a creative outlet but take most of the hard work out of the process and just allow you to express yourself (not to say that building great levels isn't hard work - but if you don't have to learn programming or 3D modelling or art in order to build them, it doesn't feel like you've done the work). Aside from the hours I've spent in Minecraft creative mode, I used to really love building levels in Tony Hawk Proskater and Smash Bros - especially because of the satisfaction I'd get from playing the levels I'd designed with my friends. That kind of instant gratification was another motivating factor to keep working on them - along with the low barrier to entry. During my internship last year I worked at River City Labs, where sk89q, the developer for World Edit (a Minecraft level design tool) has also worked in the past.

For the fic prompt..maybe L and Light having a smol baby?
(i LOVE this prompt and also for some reason this fic became more “L and Light having a Wii system.” also ALSO anyone who figures out the terrible joke of the baby’s name gets ... a pat on the back from me.)
cross-posted on ao3
L opened one eye and realized he napped for three hours. His and Light’s bedroom was dark, the hallway light skimming in underneath the closed door. Shuffling out of bed and into the hall still shirtless in his sweatpants, L made his way down toward the living room. Soft pinging sounds echoed from the entryway and Light’s muddled yet mean trash talk mixed in. Beneath those noises, soft happy coos punctuated.
“Your problem is,” Light said, clearer as L began to round the corner, “that you turn the Wii-mote too far. You’re going to keep going off the edge.”
On the couch, Light sat cross-legged on their gray three-seater couch with Peanut propped up in his lap. Dark curls were pulled into a little pink scrunchie, and the baby mouthed on her hand while Light rotated the controller in his hand. Beside him floated the other controller – both of them fitted into steering wheel attachments – that, from the flailing motions, seemed to be linked to the driving Donkey Kong careening off the Rainbow Road onscreen. Light flicked his eyes to L, who coughed and grinned as Peanut began to babble excitedly at his arrival.
“Hello Light, Peanut,” he nodded his head toward them. “And hello, Ryuk.”
“Ryuk has asked if you know how to win at Mario Cart,” Light said. “No, he doesn’t. L doesn’t play video games that are fun.”
“I play many fun games,” L said. He folded his arms across his chest, leaning on the wall. “I just don’t think driving is that fun. Plus, Light is terrible and uses too many turtle shells.”
“Pfft. Okay,” Light snorted. In his lap, Peanut stretched her little arms toward L. “Oh, oh. Looks like Peanut’s wanting Papa. Can you take her for a few?”
L swooped up Peanut, navigating around Light’s Wii-mote maneuvers. Once nestled in his arms, the baby gurgled and grasped a hunk of his hair. He let out one manful yelp when she yanked. Settling on the floor next to Light, he cradled her closer and kissed the top of her head – despite being almost a year old, she still had a touch of fresh baby smell.
“She’s had her bottle, been changed,” Light said. “But I can’t get her to go down for a nap, so I figured if I wasted a little time with Ryuk then she’d fall asleep eventually. Now I’ve won about four races and Peanut’s still wide away.”
As if recognizing her nickname, Peanut clapped her hands and squealed. Her eyes gleamed big and brown. L rocked her a bit, keeping her close to his skin, and sighed. There was a strangeness to how much he cared about this little thing: a sensation of completeness he only knew described as love. But the feeling was more complex than that word – which was used so often it couldn’t possibly encompass how he felt about Light and Peanut. In the face of the unknown, he acknowledge the one thing he did know about his daughter: that he would do anything for her. All that Reese Ikko “Peanut” Lawliet had to do was ask it of L.
Light won another round of Mario Cart, the floating controller being tossed aside as an invisible death god got gamer rage in L’s living room, and slowly, Peanut’s eyes fluttered closed. By the time Ryuk left and Light turned on Katamari Damacy, she snored in gentle trills.
“I should have known she wouldn’t sleep before seeing you,” Light said as he rolled his katamari over a cat. “She likes to see both of us. Can’t wait for Peanut to develop object permanence.”
“Eventually,” L brushed a curl from the baby’s face. His heart ached in fullness and throbbed as Light ran a hand through his hair. With his husband petting him, and his daughter snoring on his chest, L was terribly, terminally content with where he was.

Hi undine!! I’m watching e3 this weekend (an event where games get announced if you don’t know) and trying to squeeze in time to write still!! I can’t remember where I was at the last time I talked to you, but I finished the first draft of my main wip a week ago and am working on my side gay undercover spy wip while I let it rest! Would you like to ramble about the ATB characters? How has your summer been so far? Anything new or fun in your life or near Future plans? Thanks for doing this ❤️
Hey Lila!
Congrats on finishing your first draft, that's awesome!!! I'm so impressed, I swear you've been pulling out so many amazing milestones and achievements lately — or at least it definitely seems like it. You're so amazing, I'm in awe of you! And excuse me gay undercover spy WIP sounds amazing please tell me more????
My summer has been pretty chill. I'm actually wrapping up my internship this week. I've been asked to stay on temporarily as a paid volunteer to help make the transition process smoother as new interns come in, and I am officially handing over the baton on Thursday. It's kind of bittersweet! Besides that, I don't really have any summer plans. Besides writing with my writing partner and hanging out with friends! Now that things are slowly opening back up, I've been reaching out to some old high school friends that I haven't talked to in forever and that's been really nice.
What about you? I hope your summer is fantastic!
This post is already super long, so I'll ramble abotu ATB characters in a different post I think. Thanks so much for asking! I've been struggling to figure out how to talk about it and I really appreciate it.
Putting my E3 thoughts under the read more because wow it is a lot of words.
I've been watching bits and pieces of E3. I've never been one to watch it and I usually just caught up with all the news afterwards, but my partner is much more into it than I am so we've been watching some together when we can! I watched the Bethesda and Square Enix showcase yesterday and boy howdy let me tell ya, I was so disappointed! Square Enix makes some of my absolute favorite games and I was really excited for it. I was hoping for some Dragon Quest XII news, or maybe something more about Project Triangle Strategy but all I got was an entire half an hour on the Guardians of the Galaxy game, and then another additional Avengers thing. As someone who is definitely not into the MCU and is super frustrated that all the big movie releases are all MCU movies, I was very unhappy. Everything else in that was also super rushed and not well organized at all. I was pretty disappointed with Life is Strange: True Colors in it too despite being super excited for the game because it just feels like it was all stuff I already knew.
That being said, I did say "I'm going to kill Chaos!" with my partner all day yesterday so it wasn't a complete bust.
I was also hoping for a new Ace Attorney game from Capcom but all we got was the Great Ace Attorney again :c. I'm glad it's coming to the West and all but as a Japanese person I definitely don't need it as much as Americans do sooooo
Now that Square Enix and Capcom have not been it for me, I'm really looking forward to the Nintendo Direct tomorrow. I don't have big hopes, I'm just hoping to be pleasantly surprised since Nintendo has been pretty dry lately too. All I want is an Animal Crossing update that actually adds stuff, something more substantial for Zelda's 35th anniversary than what we've got so far, and maybe some more news on some games I've been anticipating like Baldo and again, Project Triangle Strategy, maybe an Octopath Traveler sequel or a follow up to FE3H but I'm not expecting any of that to actually happen. My partner is also dying for a Metroid thing. I think he's resigned to not hearing anything about Metro Prime 4, so he's just crossing his fingers for some of the older games to make its way over onto the Switch. As always I'm keeping my hopes super low, but it'd be nice to get excited about a game again.
I hope it's more than just the rumored Switch Pro!
(My biggest wildcard wish is for a new Katamari Damacy to be announced. Warioware too but that one is seeming a bit more promising!)
I also just started playing Hades for the first time yesterday and so if it's super disappointing I'm just going to channel it all into that because I am obsessed.

7 and 17 for the music ask meme 👀
7. three songs you didn’t expect to like but eventually loved
Twister (The World Ends With You OST) - back when this game came out my musical tastes were a bit more narrow. i was obsessed with the traditional j-rpg soundtrack and also working on my music degree. the soundtrack broke a lot of the traditional conventions and people seemed to like it. that made me angry xD turns out it was good though! like really good! all i needed to do was give it a chance and pull the stick out from my ass
The Farplane Abyss (Final Fantasy X-2 OST) - the soundtrack for ffx was pretty well liked and so when ffx-2 was announced i was tentatively thrilled? the first direct final fantasy sequel and maybe another soundtrack with the same trio of composers? welp... turns out ffx-2 decided to take a different approach to pretty much everything. it’s still a little weird to go back to the same places and hear completely different music. but if i let go of those expectations, the soundtrack is actually a lot of fun! this one in particular is such a moody piece and really connects with me :3
Lonely Rolling Star (Katamari Fortissimo Damacy) - not really a surprise here x’D this song is definitely my style. the katamari soundtrack was always sort of a funky meme? i know i didn’t take it seriously when it came out. it has such a distinctive sound though and so many of the songs are complete earworms. this one is always stuck in my head somewhere and that’s fine with me
17. three songs that remind you of your crush
Quatre Mains (Evangelion 3.33 OST) - if two boys have four hands and they all touch the same piano... is that gay? sounds a little gay to me. also i just love four hand piano pieces x’D something fun about them
We’re So Far Away (Mae) - i don’t always understand why or how, but you’ve changed everything. at least a little bit. hopefully changes for the better :’3
Happiness Writes White (Harvey Danger) - i still don’t know if i’m ever truly happy. it’s hard to tell because it doesn’t usually show. it’s so much easier to feel and express pain or anger or sadness. there’s something there though. even if it’s only a blank page sometimes x’3
Sick Jan (Chris Fleming) - bonus song cause how could i not x’D we all have a sick jan inside us. just waiting.
