I can't tell you how much this series meant to me as a teenager, and what an impact it still has on me as a writer. I've wanted to take a crack at this beautiful lot for ages. Featuring Mort, Death, Lord Vetinari (and Wuffles), Vimes, Moist, and Rincewind.

The Fifth Elephant really is the funniest book when you realise that the whole time Vetinari is having the Most Relaxed Time Of His Life, since it's canon no one dares to commit any crimes in fear of what Vimes will do when he gets back.

So while Vimes is in Uberwald busy fleeing from werewolves, being almost mauled to death multiple times, falling off waterfalls, climbing in trees, and all of this without having slept for at least three days, Vetinari is back in Ankh-Morpork like:

Todays the day. I think my favorite aspect of Night Watch is seeing the characters we know and love as relative children. Like, we knew beforehand that Nobby’s childhood was rough, but for me at least, I did not see it as Charles Dickens/Little Match Girl levels of rough.

I don’t have a ton to say about teen Vimes, but I do have a few questions. Other than the obvious ‘how did such a nice kid become cynical alcoholic Guards Guards era Vimes?’ I’d like to know more about his home life. For some reason, the way he talked about it felt a little cryptic to me.

The seamstress stuff surrounding Vetinari was great. If you had told me before reading that Vetinari was raised by a wild band of women, I wouldn’t be able to see it, but it really fits. He is relatively feminine compared to the other male characters, seems to have a pretty complex understanding of female life, and seems to have protecting sex workers as a priority.

Also, Sybil’s appearance was a lot of fun. That is the behavior of the weird little girl who grew up and decided ‘screw it’ as soon as she was out of finishing school.

But also like. Vetinari was in that alley watching Vimes when he told the other cops that Carcer once killed a watchman who was off duty and eating a pie. Thirty years later, a man named Carcer kills a cop off duty while he eats a pie… No wonder Vetinari seemed to already know what was going on in that first conversation in his office in the book. He’d already heard about that specific murder… He’d also heard Carcer call Keel « duke » lol

Yall Discworld fandom I need you guys to check out this fic right here

It's a Samuel Vimes/Sybil Ramkin/Havelock Vetinari romance story but it's also a murder mystery. The fic manages to mix all these aspects seemingly into a story that has a really close caliber as the guards books (i had to stop reading fifth elephant to focus on the fic, yes, I was mixing both stories)

Here's the summary:

It began with a quiet confession from Lord Vetinari, and Lady Sybil making a decision about what to do with it. Vimes is exhausted, and at once frightened by and drawn to the changes that the two are introducing to his life. But then dwarfs around the city begin to go mad and hallucinate themselves into a violent frenzy, and a brutal murder is committed in the pouring rain. Maybe, just maybe, Vimes can figure it all out before the madness and the rage gets him too.

It's explicit, it's kinky, it's about finding yourself and loving/accepting yourself, but also there are some weird fucking things going around Ankh-Morpork that are unrelated... Until they aren't anymore.

The characters are all So In Character, they are well thought and they have their own depths and motivations, it's beautifully done.

Putting the Commander to Bed should be a must read between Jingo and Fifth Elephant. It's all I'm saying.

Chapter 1: Putting the commander to bed (also posted here on AO3)

I am starting a series of sketches based on scenes from "Putting the Commander to Bed" by Judin on AO3, which is a fantastic fic that I have been rotating in my head since I first read it. I hope to do one for each chapter, and maybe a full illustration for my favorite chapter. We'll see how it goes!

i mean we all know Vimes, the short king that he is, would be a Jack Russel. because small and because Vetinari's terrier.

Carrot would be a German Shepherd probably. big, affable, police associations, and always with the looming knowledge that they could, if they wanted to, absolutely fuck you up. but they don't! because they're lovely! but they could.

i initially thought of Moist as a fox because of his scheming but then i realised he's not machiavellian and mostly very mischievous. so i think Moist would be a ferret. Vetinari would be a fox.

Magrat would definitely be a mouse. Granny would be a Raven. Nanny escapes me, she's very affable but she- wait no, nevermind. Hedgehog.

So, I’ve been looking for a real 18th century gowns these days and… it’s a total spice-killer. Awful, but, you know, Havelock never had a reason to search for some sassy-hot-stylish gown before relationships with Vimes. I bet he just chose the most simple one and used to wear it until the Feet of Clay times. And then there was an unexpected amount of people who saw his “no one is going to see me sleeping in this thing” gown in just three days. So he found it rational to buy a new one.

A new model that was kindly provided by the seamstress-guild shop🌚🌝

Oh and look at the young baby here. He NEEDS a long good nap

He won’t think it was a good idea if he had enough sleep! But you know, all that paperwork and ruling Ank-Morpork after Snapcase must be exhausting.
