Gods and Monsters (1998)
🎬🧟‍♂️
Based on the Christopher Bram novel Father of Frankenstein, this period drama film from writer/director Bill Condon is a semi-fictionalized account of the final days of world-famous film director James Whale, known for directing the pre-Code horror film Frankenstein and its sequel Bride of Frankenstein in the 1930s.
A distinguished cast includes: Sir Ian McKellen as James Whale, Brendan Fraser as ex-Marine/gardener Clayton Boone (a fictitious character) and Lynn Redgrave as Hungarian housekeeper Hanna.
Ian McKellen (whose marvelous performance garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Actor) is one of the greatest thespians of our time who doesn’t disappoint in his startling portrayal of a dapper though ailing filmmaking legend. Brendan Fraser, typically known for his comedic chops, makes it crystal-clear that he is just as capable in dramatic roles. Lynn Redgrave (who, like Ian McKellen, received an Oscar nomination for her scintillating performance) is nothing short of extraordinary in the role of a devoted, albeit dour, caretaker.
The script (which won the Oscar for Beat Adapted Screenplay) is well-written in tackling the conflict of coming to terms with old age and diminished capacity. The film demonstrates this through flashbacks of James Whale’s working-class childhood, service in World War I and Old Hollywood glamour whilst experiencing mini-strokes and seizures.
In terms of observing the complicated friendship between a retired filmmaker and a young man with his whole life ahead of him, Mr. Whale takes a great interest in Clayton, the latter of whom is initially skeptical of his employer’s homosexual desires. However, despite the separation of sexual orientation, this uneasy yet poignant connection changes both their lives forever.
Bill Condon’s creative direction allows him to visually convey the real and imagined sensibilities of James Whale, whose flair for horror left an indelible mark on the film industry. Although warm reception of the British in Hollywood was customary during the talkie era, James Whale’s open gayness was the subject of controversial debate in a civilized yet closeted society. Through his declining health, Mr. Whale views Clayton as a guy whose God-like physique stands out from the other young men in his life. What’s more, he sees Clayton as his own monster of Frankenstein, specifically one that could give him the perfect ending to his latest drama. Clayton, who had been disillusioned about his future after being discharged from the Marines, achieves a newfound sense of hope through his admiration for James Whale’s artistic talent.
Lastly, the finer details of the film may be fabricated, but there are definitely interwoven truths about the story of James Whale’s life. All in all, I certainly recommend this hidden gem of a movie to every Ian McKellen/Universal Monsters fan.
“To a new world of gods and monsters!”
-Dr. Pretorius (Bride of Frankenstein)

Yeehawgust 2023 - Day 11
Wicked Horns
Word Count - 392
Izzy’s Echo log day, why do I bother numbering these.
Today I found out what a deathclaw is. Big, mean, angry things. Nearly destroyed ED-E, the small robot we’ve been running with. Still don’t know what he is, not been allowed near him for long enough to have a look.
Back to the deathclaws. They’re giant dinosaur looking things with all the anger of a Bullymong. I’ve no doubt Hammerlock would find them fascinating. No one knows where they come from, all they know is that they’re big, mean and scary. We weren’t even supposed to encounter them. Jules and Leroy were arguing about directions and where was best to go and this thing just appeared behind us. Boone tried his best to get some distance between himself and it before he fired, both Arcade and ED-E opened fire from where they were standing. I’ve been trusted with a pistol which didn’t seem to scratch the beast. Leroy pulled out his shotgun, a pump action in 12 gauge if I had to guess. Jules had yelled for us all to get some distance between us and it, grenade rifle in hand.
Easier said than done. Deathclaws are fast. In all the chaos Arcade went down, so did ED-E.
When the deathclaw saw me it sprinted towards me. It’s claws out, ready to swipe me in half. I fired all the ammo I had into the beast, it didn’t slow down. It barely hesitated.
Jumping back with all my strength. The claw raked across my chest. Ripping the shirt and causing mild bleeding. Still hurts right now, but it shouldn’t be too bad. Jules is quite adept with a medi-kit. But anyway back to the deathclaw.
After its claws got me, it fell. The forward momentum of its hunt towards me didn’t stop. It fell, and I was mildly stuck beneath said deathclaw for longer than I’d have liked. Apparently we’re lucky that it was alone. Their pack animals. We struggled to take down one of them.
From beneath it, I got a good view of the horns on this thing. Massive curved things the size of my forearm, unlike anything I've seen before. Apparently the size of the horn is a way of telling the deathclaws age. This one was an adult.
My chest still kills so Imma call it a day.

(Yet another) different asg skills anon, but Hard Agree re the commentary, it was absolutely grating. Also players getting paid millions of dollars need to get over being embarrassed - the ASG isn't really About Them as much as it is For The Fans/Host City.
(My dream asg skills format combines the draft and the comp - make the 4 team captains a sole representative a la Clayton Keller or Boone Jenner, and make them compete to draft their teams. All the other players get their names stuck in a hat and for each event 4 get drawn randomly a la the Draft Lottery. In the first event, the Captains win their first teammate by order of Draw/Placement, and then their new teammate competes in the next event to win the next teammate, so on and so forth. Surely the nhl can come up with 10 fun/different events. And that way you get some real randomness and creativity, because maybe the next event is faster skater and all the new competitors are goalies, or you're doing a hardest shot competition with people who never take slapshots, etc)
lmao, yeah, i too have limited sympathy for these guys being embarrassed. but also i do want them to have fun 😔 i like it when they have fun 😔
your version of the asg DOES sound very entertaining and chaotic (and bonus points for how it would highlight lesser-known all stars!!) -- would definitely watch. for me, i enjoy having guys picked for events they're really good at, like, i really DO enjoy seeing all the beefiest guys (and elias pettersson) just whack the shit out of that puck for hardest shot, or seeing the super speedy guys do fastest skater. but it would be fine if they did it your way one year, for the chaos 😂

Yeehawgust 2023 - Day 10
Neon Moon
The moon shone into our dusty little derelict we called a camp, casting long shadows across the foyer. A gripping cold had consumed the room. Izzy had insisted he didn’t need to wrap up, before curling up beneath my coat. Boone had settled against a wall, seemingly impervious to the cold night of the desert. With his shades still on it was impossible to know if he was truly asleep or not. Arcade had stayed up longest, tending to the small fire but he got tired and laid down on the bedroll Leroy had brought with him. ED-E had entered a low-power mode but kept a watch. Leroy himself perched by the window, smoking and watching the stars. The radio on his Pipboy quietly playing music.
From where I sat, against the wall opposite the door, he seemed calm. This seemed the most relaxed as he had been in all our travels. He held a hip flask in his left hand. His coat was at his side, though he still had his hat on. He had been muttering under his breath over the course of the last hour. If he knew I was awake, he didn’t care. He looked content. The moon illuminated his weathered features. Beneath the old hat, his hair had been let down, reaching just below the shoulders.
As I sat, my mind wandered more and more. If he was Courier Six in this timeline was he responsible for the divide? Did he remember? How did the other me meet him? I pull the thin blanket further round me, not out of cold but an attempt to ground myself back into this world. I began to pick at my nails, needing something to do with my hands. Pent up energy needed to be released, so I shook my hands and bounced my leg.
“You know, generally when folks try to pretend to sleep they stay still.” Leroy mused from the window, his eyes settled on the moon.
I stood and put my glasses on, walking over to him with the blanket left in a heap by the wall.
“And how would you know that?”
“Spend enough time in an NCR barrack, you end up learning a lot.”
Pulling one of the boxes over, I sat beside him and followed his gaze out of the window. Looking him in the eye might reveal the truth about him, but I couldn’t stand the thought of it. He watched me as I studied the skies. My vest top, jeans and boots expose more of the story told through scars than I would ever have exposed myself. The burns down my left arm and up my back, from an attack with a flamethrower in my youth. Several smaller scars that had faded but not disappeared. The line that followed my spine, a similar one along my chest, both poked over the top of my top. My hair, which had started to grow back while I was in Big MT, tried to cover the scar from having my brain removed. Failed at covering the symbol of our shared history. A scar that had been fading, but that everyone could see. The identifier of Courier Six.
He was reading my story through my scars, considering them against his own.
Trying to ignore him, I watched the sky. It was the same as the sky I had spent countless nights staring into. Trying to assign the same symbolism and significance to the constellations that ancient cultures had. I thought back to the conversations with Raul about the sky, his comment that the stars hadn’t changed in over 200 years. Considering the night I spent, wondering if the figures in the history books contemplated the same moon and stars. I missed home, not just my Mojave but the Capital Wasteland. The people I had left behind when I came to the Mojave.
“You,” Leroy spoke up, breaking a silence that I hadn’t noticed. “So you were Courier Six in your world?”
Without turning from the sky, I replied: “Yeah, I took the bullet in the Goodsprings Cemetery. Doc Mitchel patched me up and I ventured out on a revenge quest.”
“Then got caught up in a war you wanted nothing to do with.” His voice took the same soft tone it had when he’d first met me.
“Yeah. But I helped people, or I tried to. I-” I took a breath, I hadn’t told anyone my story. Everyone I knew, they already knew most of it. Izzy hadn’t asked, not that I’d pried into their life story. “I made a big mistake. Thought it would help people, but- It just got people killed.”
“I get that.” He joined me in staring out at the sky, the moon bright enough to cast shadows across the desert. Leroy let out a light laugh, “I’m probably the only person who does understand.”
“Yeah.”
“You side with the NCR at the Dam?”
It was a question I hadn’t expected. It made sense for him to ask, him running with the two people who hated the Legion the most (Boone and Arcade) would lead to some awkward conversations that ended with gunshots, if I’d sided with the Legion.
“Yeah,” I paused for a moment, calculating how to explain my choice. “Kinda.”
“Kinda?”
“I helped them defend Hoover Dam, but I was working with House for a free Vegas.” I whispered the last bit. It didn’t matter though. He heard me.
“And that was going to be better than NCR Vegas, how?”
“I’m not wanted in my world, at least not in Vegas. Might not be allowed into NCR territory ever again but I had no plans of seeing California anyway. In fact avoiding California is a far greater plan.”
“Cause of your parents?”
“Me from this world really told you everything, huh?”
“We were close.”
I let that sit in the air for a moment. Whoever this other me was, he cared about them. A lot. And then he had lost them and had to take the blame for their death. Any pain he felt would have been exacerbated by me simply being there.
He changed the subject. “Why’d you side with Mr House?”
“I thought he’d be the best choice for Vegas. Benny’s idea wasn’t long term, would have left too much of a power vacuum. Vegas would have torn itself apart. I’d have rather died than help the Legion.”
“And the NCR?”
“They didn’t seem strong enough. Mimicked the old world government too much. People in the Mojave didn’t seem thrilled at the idea of an NCR takeover. I. I didn’t want to support what could have been a majorly disastrous colonial takeover. The people of the Mojave deserved the ability to be independent.”
“And the NCR wouldn’t offer that.”
“No, they wouldn’t. Not without strong negotiation. And by the time we got through all the paperwork, there’d be too many troops to hold our own against. So that leaves House. He seemed like the only one with a plan. He had the technical superiority to maintain power. But in the end that was the problem. He had too much power. By the time I realised I’d made a massive mistake, it was already too late. The NCR refused to accept my help in gaining allies.”
“Damn.” He took a swig from the hip flask. Offering it across to me, I shook my head. “Don’t drink?” he questioned.
“No. Not after…” I let the thought trail off. I still hadn’t fully come to terms with everything that led up to the Sierra Madre, my drunken curiosity that landed me in that nightmare.
“Okay.”
“So, Why’d you side with the NCR?”
“Knew they weren’t the worst. Understood their systems. I thought they were best for the Mojave. Not that I think very highly of the NCR.” He turned into the room, watching the last embers of the fire. “Used to be a Ranger, hence the armour.” He patted his chest piece. “Should have known they were incompetent really. I was too blinded by the sheer incompetence and bloodshed of the Legion, and revenge against Benny and his terrible dress sense.” We both laughed. A genuine, light hearted sound that fought back the cold in the room. “Glad we both agree on that.”
“His jacket is ugly. I mean, I have it in my collection but it’s itchy.”
“Tweed man, it’s awful.”
We smiled at each other, sharing the joke.
“But anyway, I didn’t go and see House till right before I killed him. By the time I got the chip, I was already part of the war.”
“I suppose this Mojave is more stable than mine.”
“Even though you're dead and I’m a wanted man?”
“Yeah. People seem safer, you’ve got active trade routes bringing supplies to and from the west.”
“You never did consider yourself first.” I looked at him, the first time I had in this whole conversation. His cheeks were damp. He smiled at me, through his tears. “Sorry, just. I’m gonna go get some air.” With that he stood and stepped out of the door.
From my perch in the window, I could hear the song that echoed over the radio.
Blue Moon,
You saw me standing alone,
Without a Dream in my heart,
Without a love of my own,

Welcome to Silvertown, located at Corriganville (in the Simi Valley, a bit north of Los Angeles) where many a TV an' Movie bad hombre bit the dust,  it's Bank was robbed more times than can be remembered... Even John Ford's US Cavalry rode out of Fort Apache at Corriganville and through movie magic, reappeared in Monument Valley...  In the Saloon you might've rubbed elbows with the great and near great,  Randolph Scott, Gene Autry, John Wayne, The Cisco Kid,  Hopalong Cassidy (drinking Sarsaparilla), Edgar Buchanan, Audie Murphy,  Gene Kelly, Robert Mitchum, Max Baer, Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom, Rin-Tin-Tin, Roy Rogers, Clayton Moore & Jay Silverheels (The Lone Ranger & Tonto),  Captain Midnight, Marshal Matt Dillon, Hoss Cartwright an' all his clan to  Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone or Claude Rains from "The Adventures of Robin Hood",  Richard Boone as Paladin, Steve McQueen the bounty hunter, Nick Adams as Johnny Yuma, or Harvey Lembeck as Eric von Zipper... even Ray (crash) Corrigan hisself...
Today it seems its Bronco Bunny and Kalamity Kitty's turn ta shoot it out... But after emptying Kalamity's Navy Colt an' Bronco's rusty 44 without hittin' anything important, they wrestled around in the dust for a bit, till the Director called time... Then they headed for the Silvertown Hotel for a long soak in the bath an' arguing over who got to use the hair conditioner first... It's all gone now, burned to the ground in the 60s by wildfires, but the memories still linger, on celluloid and video tape...

( CLAYTON CARDENAS, CIS MAN, HE/HIM ) — Look who it is! If you take a look at our database, you’ll find that SANTIAGO QUIJADA is a FORTY year old CULT LEADER that has been in Chicago for FORTY YEARS. According to government files, they’re a MUTANT on LEVEL THREE with the powers of LICH PHYSIOLOGY and NECROMANTIC POWER BESTOWAL. That must be why they’re METICULOUS and NARROW-MINDED. If you ask me, they remind me of RESENTMENT FESTERING LIKE AN INFECTED WOUND, SILK SHEEKS DRAPED OVER EVERY SURFACE, AND A THRONE MADE OF BONES. They are affiliated with THE CULT OF THE BLESSED.
background.
( tw: death )
when santiago was born, there were no signs of the darkness that was to come. by all accounts, he appeared to be almost perfectly ordinary, and was taken in to a family that was prepared to love him for that. the illusion for normalcy broke early on. at three, he resurrected a plant that had been killed by the drought, surprising ( and thrilling, for a time ) his parents. the power to give life had to be something holy, right? that illusion also died fast, when that same plant crumbled to dust after strangling the others in the garden with its thorny roots. when the rats returned with heads hanging by a thread. they didn’t come back right, as christ had—this was something evil.
both mother and father tried to instill some restraint in him, fearing it the devil’s taint. santiago pretended to heed his parents’ wishes, but secretly sought out opportunities to flex his gifts. he would trail for roadkill, pulling them back from violent deaths to return to navigate without the certain pain that would wrack them in life. deformed and rotting. while not dangerous to others, his creations sewed fear into his neighbors, many of which gave the supposedly cursed family ( and especially their freak of a son ) a wide berth. his only friends remained the creatures he brought back from the beyond.
it all came to head when he brought back a person. mangled from a car wreck he witnessed, he helped them out of a slower, more painful death and into the joys of unlife. but just as with everything else he brought back, they came back ill at odds with the world around them. the family of the victim, horrified, called for the restraint ( imprisonment, even ) of what they saw as the responsible party. before that could happen ( there was no precedent of this that they could find ) a different group butt into the situation—this time, in favor of the cursed child. they would take him under their wings to teach a responsibility that humanity had failed to instill.
although they didn’t realize it at the time, the sanctum of the stars reached out too little, too late. by that point, santiago didn’t care if what powers he bore were of the devil’s mark—the power he wielded was beyond the limiting mindsets of good and evil. all he craved was more, more, more. at first, this was a boon. he showed an interest in the history of mutation and what it could mean in his situation, and excelled at their attempts to hone in on his strange abilities... but when it came to responsibility, things began to fall apart. the sanctum and its teachers began to grow wary of him.
knowing of their mistrust ( seen as a refusal to accept ) santiago took matters into his own hands. he pulled away from the friends he had outside of the sanctum, growing darker and less pleasant to be around. everyone was an enemy, a snake in the grass waiting for the chance to pull him down into the mud. the creations he pulled up from the land of the dead grew equally as erratic... even aggressive toward the living. the sanctum knew that they had to act fast, before he could dare to sink his influence into humanity again... and do something truly dangerous.
he was locked down on the grounds, far enough underground that they thought he might not be able to manipulate his way out. a temporary measure, but one santiago took to great offense. for days, he refused any form of hospitality, focusing on the earth beneath him for anything he could use to escape. he found it in the skeleton of a creature almost as old as time, using its bones to break the foundations of his prison and escape into the night. from there, he went the only place he could think of —back home.
fearing the worst, the sanctum sent people after him. he was too dangerous to leave unchecked, even more so now that he had been locked away as he had. though they found him quickly, santiago had no intention of coming quietly. he fought and was struck down by the blows of someone more experienced, refusing to surrender... or to consider a peaceful resolution of the conflict. seemingly the end of a long tragedy, he was buried in a plot home to many of his family... but he didn’t die long.
santiago tore himself from the grave not long after his untimely death, changed for the worst. his blood glowed gold, the same color as his eyes. wicked claws replaced his once-smooth fingernails. any remaining light in his soul died when he was struck down, corrupted with hatred. he hunted down and killed the two agents that had been responsible for his death, taking their resurrected corpses into his own fold. now to do the same with the rest of their allies... and then, who knows? maybe the world.
quick facts.
the first creature he ever raised from the dead was a mouse that his parent’s cat had decapitated. fun times!
his phylactery is a necklace with a small emerald in it. he wears a fake around his neck, while the real one is kept somewhere safe.
has a cult he runs in his spare time! it’s a grift, as all cults are, so that he has a steady stream of souls to feed on. and also, fuck the living and whatever.
...bi ;)
has two thumbs on each hand, each ending in a wicked talon.
possible connections.
childhood friends: one or two people in the same age bracket that hung out as kids and bonded before... well, things happened. might end up submitting an official connection for this because it’s IMPORTANT! they would not be aware of his recent activities and probably assume he skipped town at some point post-sanctum.
liaisons: a few people that, for whatever reason, help him out. they may or may not know what he’s up to and his overall goals, would totally be up to the person!
enemies: pretty self explanatory, me thinks. priority to anyone with the sanctum. <3
anything else?: please love me.

Do Don't
Tumblr media
It is clearly an expression or song lyric, even as I was not familiar with it. Given this is from the writer Frank Doyle -- who casually dropped lines from his listening list in his stories -- my quick guess is "Frank Sinatra!" -- and sure enough, Frank Sinatra covered the song. But this correction of the word "don't" becomes ever more interesting because -- a story from the next calendar year later and uncorrected with a reprinting within two years of the other reprint --
Tumblr media
Haphazard slightly ad hoc editing, not knowing it is correct one day, and is the other day? Conscious or Unconscious bias and fear of leaving the Black character speak a broken English that is allowed with the White character? One staff member knows the song or senses it there and the other doesn't?
"Little Green Apples" is a song written by Bobby Russell that became a hit for three different artists, with their three separate releases, in 1968. Originally written for and released by American recording artist Roger Miller, "Little Green Apples" was also released as a single by American recording artists Patti Page and O. C. Smith that same year. Miller's version became a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and on the UK Singles Chart (and a #6 hit on the Billboard Country chart), while Page's version became her last Hot 100 entry and Smith's version became a #2 hit on the Hot 100 chart. The song earned Russell a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and for Best Country Song. In 2013, "Little Green Apples" was covered by English recording artist Robbie Williams featuring American recording artist Kelly Clarkson, which became a top 40 hit in Mexico.
But the lyrics lead to a conundrum. Someone transposed it wrong somewhere.
And if that's not lovin' me (lovin' me) Then all I've gotta say (gotta say) Is God didn't make little green apples And it don't rain in Indianapolis in the Summertime.
And the other line of note.
And if that's not lovin' me (lovin' me) Then all I've gotta say (gotta say) Is God didn't make little green apples And it don't snow in Minneapolis when the winter comes.
It is still "Don't", though. The corrected Chuck Clayton becomes like Pat Boone singing "Isn't it a Shame?" for the benefits of proper English.

Recently Viewed: Hellraiser (2022)
Tumblr media
When Clive Barker decided to direct a cinematic adaptation of one of his own novellas (The Hellbound Heart) back in 1987, he was a prolific author, but an amateur filmmaker at best. His lack of experience resulted in Hellraiser, the most singularly unique horror movie to emerge from an era replete with Friday the 13th sequels and rip-offs. While he frequently criticizes the finished product as “uneven,” I consider it to be a beautiful paradox: poetic, sensual, grotesque, mesmerizing, and unapologetically weird.
Let’s not delude ourselves: no remake, reboot, or reimagining was ever going to measure up to the towering legacy of the original, which transcends its reputation as a “cult classic” and remains the genre’s quintessential accidental masterpiece (more than earning its recurring seasonal spot on the Criterion Channel). This, of course, invites the question of whether Hulu Presents a Hulu Production of Hulu’s Hellraiser (2022) succeeds on its own merits.
Tumblr media
Well, if nothing else, it’s certainly preferable to the studio’s flaccid attempt to translate Books of Blood to its streaming service.
I know that’s a low bar (hell, it’s practically below sea level), but I don’t intend it as a backhanded compliment. True, it takes nearly a full hour for the story to rev its engine, but once it builds momentum, it absolutely delivers the goods. And I’m not just talking about the gore—though flesh is pierced, penetrated, and peeled off in myriad inventive ways; I’m referring to the franchise’s oft-overlooked (but no less integral) Lovercraftian elements. Befitting Lemarchand’s puzzle box’s newfound role as a metaphor for drug addiction, the gradual process of unlocking it warps reality and distorts perception, twisting and reconfiguring architecture into impossible shapes and alien geometries evocative of Hellbound: Hellraiser 2’s gorgeous matte paintings of the Leviathan’s nightmare dimension. In one particularly memorable scene, for example, a character watches in terror as the front half of the van in which she is riding slowly vanishes into the darkness ahead, the rusted metal surrounding her transforming into the smooth, gray stone of an infernal labyrinth.
Tumblr media
The real stars of the show, however, are the Cenobites. The revised creature designs emphasize their status as religious zealots: they drape ceremonial robes woven from flayed skin over their exposed organs and glistening musculature. They torture their victims with jewel-encrusted blades, poking and prodding their nerves to alter the pitch of their tormented screams—a symphony of suffering. Jamie Clayton wisely avoids mimicking Doug Bradley’s coldly polite portrayal of Pinhead, instead playing the rechristened Priest as a playfully curious temptress, enticing prospective converts with promises of boons and gifts—though predictably, the Order of the Gash’s idea of a “reward” differs greatly from what a mere mortal might reasonably expect.
Ultimately, the quality of Hellraiser (2022) falls somewhere between “competent” and “decent.” The whole is less than the sum of its parts, but for those explorers brave enough to chart the further regions of the painfully clunky experience, there are genuine pleasures to be discovered.
