"Il fiore delle Mille e una notte" di Pier Paolo Pasolini, ultimo film della "Trilogia della vita", nacque da lunghi viaggi in paesi remoti e arcaici come l'Iran e lo Yemen. Viaggi che ebbero un testimone, Roberto Villa, un fotografo che condivise con Pasolini e la troupe alcune settimane sul set. Ne derivarono alcune splendide fotografie che restituiscono la magia figurativa e la fisicità popolare del film più visionario di Pasolini e ne arricchiscono la conoscenza con uno sguardo sul mondo arabo che lo ha ispirato. Questo libro riunisce una scelta di fotografie inedite di Villa che mostrano i corpi e i luoghi all'origine dell'immaginario pasoliniano e alcuni ritratti del poeta-regista al lavoro sul set, accompagnate da rare interviste e testi di Pasolini su una concezione antropologica, narrativa ed estetica che si contrapponeva allo "sviluppo senza progresso" del presente.

Marriage Story (2019, Noah Baumbach)

Marriage Story is a 2019 film written and directed by Noah Baumbach, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.

When Nicole is offered a role in the pilot episode of a new television series in Los Angeles, she decides to leave the theater company and temporarily go to live with her mother together with her son.

Charlie decides to stay in New York, as his show is about to be performed on Broadway.

Charlie wins a MacArthur Fellowship and uses the first money he receives to pay his lawyer, Jay. Nora highlights Charlie's infidelity and her emotional distance, while Jay magnifies Nicole's drinking habit, portraying it as alcoholism.

In November 2017 it was announced that Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Laura Der, Merritt Wever and Azhy Robertson had joined the cast of a film written and directed by Noah Baumbach, produced by David Heyman's Heyday Films and co-financed by Netflix, which would also have handled its distribution. In March 2018, Kyle Bornheimer joined the cast, followed by Ray Liotta in June of that year and Julie Hagerty in November.

Filming of the film, which had a budget of approximately 18 million dollars, began on January 15, 2018 and ended in April, taking place in New York and Los Angeles.

The first trailer for the film was released online on August 20, 2019.

The film premiered on 29 August 2019 in competition at the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

The US premiere was held on October 4, 2019 at the New York Film Festival. The film had a limited distribution in US cinemas by Netflix starting from November 6 of the same year, being then released on its streaming platform starting from the following December 6. In Italy, the film was distributed theatrically by the Cineteca di Bologna starting from 18 November 2019, and was then released on Netflix at the same time as the of the world.

In January 2020, it was announced that the film would receive a DVD and Blu-ray release from The Criterion Collection.

The Italian dubbing of the film was carried out at Dubbing Brothers Int. Italia and edited by Stefanella Marrama.

ho visto che stai postando riguardo ai cinema d'essa e hai parlato anche di una cineteca a bologna (sempre se non me lo sono sognata io AHAH). Dato che sto frequentando l'unibo, ma non mi sono ancora del tutto ambientata, se ne sai qualcosa di cineteche a bologna che siano decenti, mi sapresti dare una mano? Qualsiasi cosa va bene in realtà

salve! purtroppo a bologna sono solo passata in treno perché abito in tutt'altro angolo del paese 😅 ma nel tentativo di "farsi una cultura" cinematografica prima o poi ti imbatti nel nome della cineteca di bologna perché è uno dei più importanti archivi in europa e si è fatta un nome nella conservazione e nel restauro cinematografico (in teoria si occupano anche della loro distribuzione sul territorio italiano)

non ho controllato ma sicuramente avranno anche un servizio di mediateca per il prestito al pubblico, dovresti solo bazzicare sul loro sito + ha un cinema ad essa affiliato la cui programmazione trovi qui 😊 (e mi ricordavo bene da documentari di sky arte, il prossimo 21 novembre riapre lo storico cinema modernissimo!)

Le riprese del film, girato in un casolare di campagna nei pressi di Castel Madama (Tivoli) e a Cinecittà, iniziarono il 27 luglio 1970 e terminarono martedì 8 giugno 1971. La prima del film fu il 18 agosto 1971 presso il cinema Odeon di Paola (provincia di Cosenza).

Questo film, per anni classificato tra i film scomparsi, è stato fortunosamente ritrovato nel 2007 nell'archivio della Cineteca di Bologna; un'altra copia in 35 mm era conservata dallo stesso regista, purtroppo scomparso nel 1990.

Marzia Damon è lo pseudonimo di Caterina Chiani, apparsa in altri film come Katia Chiani.

La locandina del film è stata realizzata da Ezio Tarantelli.

Nella colonna sonora di Paolo Ormi, l'omonimo motivo conduttore Madness è eseguito da "Black Sunday Flowers" (pseudonimo di Ghigo Agosti); il relativo 45 giri è stato pubblicato dalla Bla Bla di Pino Massara. Il brano è stato scritto da Harry Stott, altro pseudonimo di Ghigo, nonché fonico del film.

Nella sequenza iniziale del film appare il cantante Red Canzian (futuro componente dei Pooh), mentre si esibisce in un locale notturno con il complesso dei Capsicum Red del quale egli era il chitarrista.

Observations: What a marvelous program: the screening of a 2021 restoration by L’Immagine Ritrovata Lab of the Cineteca di Bologna, accompanied live by Stefano Maccagno (piano) and Furio Di Castri (bass). This has been touring around the USA for a while now; this is the first appearance in Chicago. Advertised as a "feature," it is more akin to a series of trick films connected by intertitles. Very cleverly done. About 90-100 in attendance.

Established by Martin Scorsese in 2007, The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project has maintained a fierce commitment to preserving and presenting masterpieces from around the globe, with a growing roster of dozens of restorations that have introduced moviegoers to often overlooked areas of cinema history. Sessão Mutual Films: Nascimento e origem: Os enganados + Diálogo árabe israelense [Mutual Films Session: The Dupes + Arab Israeli Dialogue]

May 14: The link above leads to Portuguese-language information about the 23rd edition of the Mutual Films Session, co-curated and organized by me and Mariana Shellard, whose screenings will take place on May 15th and 26th at the São Paulo-based unit of the Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) and on May 19th at the Instituto’s unit in Poços de Caldas.

The event places into dialogue two restored films from the early 1970s. The undervalued Egyptian director Tewfik Saleh’s Syrian production The Dupes, from 1972, is today considered a classic work of Arab fiction filmmaking, including in its inspired and instigating relation to its source material, the Palestinian author and activist Ghassan Kanafani’s debut novel Men in the Sun. The American filmmaker and activist Lionel Rogosin’s last film, a medium-length documentary from 1974 called Arab Israeli Dialogue, has gone in recent years from relative obscurity to ever-greater circulation as the issues discussed in the film's central conversation between the Israeli journalist and playwright Amos Kenan and the Palestinian poet Rashed Hussein have come to seem increasingly relevant. (The film’s legacy is discussed in greater detail in a recent feature-length documentary directed by Michael Rogosin – one of Lionel’s two sons – called Imagine Peace.)

Both films were recently digitally restored by the Cineteca di Bologna. The Cineteca and World Cinema Project’s restoration of The Dupes utilized as its primary source materials a duplicate 35mm negative (located in the Bulgarian National Film Archive) and the original sound negatives (housed with Éclair Classics, in France), while the Cineteca and Rogosin Heritage’s restoration of Arab Israeli Dialogue utilized the film’s original 16mm materials (which have been preserved by Anthology Film Archives, in New York).

The screenings at IMS of Arab Israeli Dialogue will have free admission. The screening of The Dupes in São Paulo on May 15th will be followed by a public conversation between me, Mariana, and Arlene Clemesha – an author, translator, film curator, and professor of Arab History and Culture at the University of São Paulo.

It is inevitable that the screenings of these films will raise connections to present-day events. With this said, we prefer not to make claims about what those connections might be. It interests us more to invite viewers to observe conversations that people were having half a century ago and consider for themselves how those conversations have changed over time.

To this end, we have included three supplemental items on our website, in addition to our synopses and curatorial text. One is a translation of part of an interview that Saleh gave about The Dupes in 1976, four years after the film’s world premiere; one is a translation of material from a conversation held in 1990 between Lionel Rogosin and Amos Kenan about issues salient to Arab Israeli Dialogue (a recording of which appears on the film's North American DVD release); and one is a translation of a poem called “With the Land”, written by Rashed Hussein.

I have found myself often thinking in recent times about how my preferred literary critics right now are Edward Said and Marjorie Perloff, both of whom argued at various times for the importance of valuing a multiplicity of perspectives and voices. It is true, of course, that some things are much bigger than cinema, as well as art in general, but the perspectives of artists on them will always be vital.
