Somewhere Chris is watching the documentary wondering exactly how long after Lucy broke up with him did she start dating Tim.

Let's continue with the positivity. Charge Tyler as a minor. He committed a crime with a gun. It was unloaded. Look, I'm not saying that there shouldn't be consequences, but he's 16. He's not old enough to drink, vote, join the military, and you want to lock him up with a bunch of grown men? Look, studies show that– No, please, don't quote studies at me. And definitely don't start lecturing me about the science of still-developing brains in men under 21. ... Look, if Tyler becomes a CI against his crew, I can definitely give him a break.

Lucy needed a friend in S4
Whenever I think about episode 4x17 and Chris singing Dream A Little Dream of Me in front of Lucy like it was a normal thing to do or a normal mistake to make. I question like the rest of us “why didn’t she break up with him?”  We could assume that it was the show itself minimizing her trauma or keeping Chris around for drama reasons. But ignoring that type of meta analysis, in character I think it all comes back to the fact that in season 4, Lucy doesn’t have the friends and support she had before. Yes I know she had Tim but we’ll get to that.  Losing Jackson lost Lucy a very important person in her life, because yes they were best friends but they were also peers. They went to each other about everything. Like we saw with Vanessa Chen, Jackson was willing to go scorched earth for Lucy against her own mother, even while Lucy would’ve just suffered in silence about her parents’ disapproval. Unlike her friendships with Nyla, Angela or Tim, Jackson was a peer, they went through the academy together, they were in a very similar stage of life. He was her sounding board in a way Nolan wasn’t or Rachel used to be before she moved. Lucy in season 4 also became Tamara’s primary caretaker, she got a little sister to care about and protect. Lucy absolutely wouldn’t want to burden her with any of the emotional uncertainty or trauma she was working through.  As previously demonstrated with Rachel, Lucy works through her issues by talking through them with someone. Her best ability to introspect is talking through her feelings, and having someone point out the lack of logic, or being able to point out her own logic. She can’t do that with Tamara, she’s not burdening this kid. She can’t really do this with Nyla and Angela, because while they are her friends they also outrank her, and are further in their careers and lives. Thorsen is still a rookie and isn’t quite at that level yet.  That leaves Tim, but at this point, I think something would prevent Lucy from really discussing her relationship with Tim. They both can’t really admit to each other that there are problems in their relationships because well...that would require them to address their deal. THe only reason Lucy intervened with Ashley is that Ashley called *her* about Kojo So anyway back to 4x17. Chris sings the song, Lucy spirals, and then she decides to watch the video, she decides not to testify, and then she’s fine? She goes to dinner with Chris? But let’s look at that scene. Even on one of her most vulnerable days, Lucy sees that Tamara is interested in lawyer intern Austin. So she makes it easy on Tamara. She knows if she’s not perfectly okay, Tamara will feel bad and it’ll ruin her evening. Lucy cares so much, even at the detriment of her own feelings. Lucy takes care of Tamara by going to dinner with Chris and convincing herself that yeah this is fine and that being with a man who belittles her career, and doesn’t listen to her, and is moving too fast is okay. It’s okay because the two people who could clock that she’s not okay, are Tim (distracted by trying to not have feelings for Lucy, and also Lucy will always want him to be proud of her which means not being vulnerable about things she’s supposed to be “over”) and Jackson (who is dead). If Jackson had been around, Lucy could’ve let herself fall apart over the SUPER TRAUMATIC DAY, and he would’ve called her on her stubbornness in needing to make Chris work. Jackson was her safeplace, in the way that Angela was Tim’s and Nyla had become Nolan’s. S4 left her unmoored which left with the ability to grow in her relationship with Tim, but it also hindered her when things came up that she couldn’t talk to Tim about, like issues with Chris, or kissing Tim in her apartment. S4 Lucy needed her friend Jackson a whole bunch, and nothing shows that more then 4x17, because Jackson would have protected her from herself.

Chenford prompt + Chris used me!
I’m combining this with another prompt= + Chris cheated on me!
==============
“Are you Lucy Chen?”
Lucy had been laughing as Tim whispered naughty things he planned to do to the soft skin of her inner things later that night while standing in the rotunda of the LA County Courthouse. One benefit of having dated the former Court Liaison Sergeant, was that the scheduling system had somehow been permanently programmed to schedule all of your trial dates on Thursdays and Fridays-same as your fiancé, funny how that works. As soon as Lucy completed her last round of testimony she and Tim were headed to Big Bear for a long weekend.
Lucy was unintentionally oblivious of the young woman standing next to her. Tim commanded all of her attention as his lips ever so softly brushed up against her neck tattoo. As she was dressed in her dark blue “court” dress that skimmed her curves with her high heels, she didn’t look like a cop. Her badge was still in her bag and not yet looped on the rose gold chain Tim had bought her when she made detective. Between her hair up from her signature loose bun, and the v-neck of her dress, she had a large swath of exposed skin that Tim felt required to suck and kiss.
“Excuse me, are you Lucy Chen?”
This time while asking the woman had reached out and touched Lucy’s arm, triggering a noticeable change in her eyes - her cop eyes clicked on while she kept a casual pose with Tim.
Lucy assessed the woman in front of her before replying. Roughly the same age as Lucy herself, Asian, beautiful, but bouncing with nervous energy, black cargo pants, tight t-shirt and loose jacket. She looked familiar, but as her mind was flooded with endorphins she wasn’t exactly, 100% present in the moment.
Lucy put her hand on Tim’s forearm, and turned to the woman, saying, “why ? Who is asking?”
The young woman’s eyes started scanning the floor, and Lucy went instinctively on alert. Tim leaned down and whispered to her, “I’m gonna go check how long until they call you. I need to get you naked as soon as I can.” Lucy kissed him briefly on the cheek, her diamond engagement ring catching the sunlight pouring through the high windows.
Lucy then turned and dug around in her purse for her badge and upon finding it, stood up straight and turned to face the young woman, saying, “Yes, I’m Detective Lucy Chen.”
Lucy immediately felt the slice on her cheek and put her hands up in defense yelling “KNIFE!” as the young woman, her face contorted in rage, screaming at Lucy as she continued to swipe her razor sharp knife at Lucy, “I’m Ming - Chris Sanford’s one true love. He cheated on me! He used me! To be with you!”
Ming then turned and darted through the crowd of uniformed officers directing them to the melee behind her.
Tim, having witnessed the attack on Lucy sprinted across the foyer, leaping over a defense attorney kneeling to tie his shoe like the quarterback with a break in the offensive line ahead of him, tearing off his button down to put pressure on her cheek. Lucy, grabbed the shirt and redirected his focus to her hands, palms up with a deep lacerations showing across both hands. “Baby, my hands. She sliced my hands. Oh they hurt. Tim they really hurt.”

In the same episode they acknowledge Chris has nerve damage from his attack, they also have Tim rescue Lucy by ripping open a door. They could have done one or the other, but they chose both. A bit cruel to lay it all out there like that; but I see you, The Rookie. I see you.

Why do you think Lucy stayed with Chris after the whole trial prep thing? Personally I would've dumped him straight away
Oh, you and me both! I think Lucy is a bit like Tim in that regard : she doesn't know when to quit, even after realising that things aren't working. She always stayed in relationships that were past their expiration dates. Take her ex who cheated on her : she admitted she was only with him because she couldn't afford moving out. Then there was Nolan : she spent 4 episodes agonising over whether she should break up with him, before he beat her to it. No comment on Emmett… And even with Chris : it took her several days after her decision to actually dump him. There's clearly a pattern… Which is an interesting one for someone who has a history of commitment issues with her significant others.
So if I had to venture a guess, I'd say she stayed with Chris simply because she didn't want to be alone. She obviously cared for him, otherwise she wouldn't have been with him in the first place. But at that point, she was merely going with the flow and enjoying the companionship : she didn't necessarily agree with Chris, approve of everything he said/did but she also didn't think it was worth fighting over. Plus, pretty much all her friends were in steady relationships : Tim was with Ashley, Angela was married, Nyla was having a baby, Nolan was thinking of proposing… It can sometimes be lonely to be the only single person in a group (it's unclear how close to Aaron she was at the time). Add the facts that her best friend Jackson was gone, that she wasn't on speaking terms with her parents and it starts to pile up.
And finally, she just had to relive her trauma… I can see how she wasn't in the right emotional place for dumping her boyfriend, despite how he triggered her. Lucy sees the best in everyone… If she was ready to give him a chance after the way he treated her when they met, she might have thought his apology was sufficient. The thing is, she really needed a friend to confide to, to help her talk things through… and the only one present was Tamara. Only I doubt Lucy would have felt comfortable 'burdening' her with this. That's not their dynamic. This was one of the (many) times Jackson was sorely missed…
