Choices Spread Kindness Celebration

Welcome to the third annual Choices Spread Kindness Celebration! This event begins on Social Media Kindness Day (November 9) and "ends" on World Kindness Day (November 13). I say "ends" because there's a bonus day to celebrate you on the 14th.

The goal of the event is simple: spread kindness in the fandom by shouting out people who make it great. Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can change someone’s day.

November 13: Fandom Love Day (Secret Admirer Day)

This is sort of like secret Santa but just for kind messages. You do not need to create, buy, or gift anyone anything. This is open to anyone in the fandom (creator, reader, supporter, anyone!)

All that is required is that you write the person you’ve been assigned a kind, encouraging, supportive message for November 13th. It can be generic, but I do encourage you to take a few minutes to look over the person's blog and see if you can give them a compliment specific to them that might be more meaningful.

To participate, message me here (@choicesfandomappreciation) or @lovealexhunt and let me know you want to join. *If there is someone you absolutely cannot be paired with please let me know that too, no judgement and it will be kept private.

On November 5th, I will randomize everyone who is interested in participating and send you one person’s name. On November 13th, send your message to this blog anonymously (@choicesfandomappreciation ).

I will tag your person so they see your message.

For Day 4 of Choices Spread Kindness event by @choicesfandomappreciation, I simply must mention the fan projects. Most probably know about them already, but if you missed them, there are a couple of fan sequels/spinoffs of various Choices books!

First, the myth, the legend that is @itlivesproject, the team behind It Lives Within, which is the sequel to It Lives books. This story is obviously made with so much love and care for the original, giving the fans everything they could ever want. From the lore to original character cameos to tiny details like character customisation. It's a wonderful story in and of itself and a perfect conclusion for the series as a whole.

Then there are also these wonderful projects that are currently in development:

@thedistantshoresproject, the Distant Shores sequel;

@nightboundfanfiction, the Nightbound sequel;

@immortaldesiresproject, the Immortal Desires sequel;

and finally @bloodboundsiege, a BloodBound spinoff taking place in New York during book 2!

Making a game is no small feat, and these are all phenomenally hard-working and talented people, who are doing it just out of love for the original stories. And I think it's something worth celebrating!

Aerin x Raine for @oh-so-youre-a-nerd

Day One of the @choicesfandomappreciation Kindness event. Thank you Thia for being so generous in sharing your art with us (your use of shadow and light symbolism lives rent free in my head forever) and thank you for hosting and organizing the fandom gift exchange. You are a gem!

Warnings & A/N: None that aren’t canon compliant.

The tent is quiet, though beyond them the festival still goes on. Laughter and music muted and dampened by the canvas walls. He can almost imagine that there is no one else but the two of them in the ruins of that old temple.

Aerin is asleep. He can tell by the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest which he watches from where he rests against Aerin’s shoulder.

He’s the most peaceful he’s ever seen him. The worry in his face has relaxed to a soft hint of a smile. The tension in his body has drained out of his muscles.

It brings him a small sense of relief to see. For this one moment, it’s one less worry he has. It’s healing in some small way that he doesn’t quite understand but accepts nonetheless. He will take healing in whatever small does it is offered them.

His eyes are drawn to the large, raised, purple scar that mars his lover’s chest and he traces its patterns with delicate fingers. They are strange and twisted paths. He’s not sure if he’s thinking of the scars or the journey that led them to find comfort in each others arms.

Does it matter? he wonders.

He decides it does not. Not really. Both are ugly, damaging, twisted, and stained. Stained with countless bad decisions and actions made by themselves and by others.

Both are beautiful in their own way. Each of those actions and bad decisions led them to each other. If he’s being honest, there was no other way to reach each other. Not when worlds and traditions separated them.

Dangerous and deadly paths can be made beautiful if you only have a bit of hope. Scars can be healed and trust mended with a touch of hope.

So he clung to that hope. Wrapping his arms around his hope. Holding it tightly, brushing back its hair to kiss his temple.

Yet hope is a beautiful and dangerous thing to cling to.

A little sad that I haven’t seen anyone on my tl showing themselves the love an appreciation they are due, so to anyone who happens to see this: you are so worthy of love.

There is one person who is going to be by your side 100% of the way, every second of your life, and that’s you. Be your own best friend. One of the sweetest acts of rebellion you can seize in a world that wants nothing more than your continued pain and conformity is to take a stand and love yourself without shame.

You are so important, sunshine. I’m proud of you for being here 💛

Dear Aria,

Been a bit of a shitty year, huh? 🌻

If things had gone your way, you’d be halfway through your first pregnancy by now. Instead, the only thing in your body is, to quote your oncologist, one of the worst tumors he’d seen in his entire medical career.

You didn’t ask for this. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would ever ask to get sick, let alone to land themselves a diagnosis of cancer so aggressive it had already metastasised in the time between diagnosis and your first dose of chemotherapy. 

This could have gone really, really bad. A diagnosis like this, even ten or fifteen years ago -- you’d be dead by now. Five to ten years ago, you’d have won a few years to settle your affairs; you’d have lost your ability to walk when they operated on the cancer in your hip bones, more mobility, depending on whether they operated on the cancer in your spine.

Had they operated to excise the tumor in your breast tissue and your lymph nodes right at the time of diagnosis ~6 months ago, you’d have needed a full mastectomy. A couple weeks later, and your tumor was so large, they couldn’t have safely operated on you anyway. Another week and you found out you were stage 4, not stage 2. 

Stage 4 cancer patients aren’t a good candidate for surgery, as it happens. They might yet turn you down. Once your cancer has metastisised, that’s kind of it. You’re up shit creek, my love. You’re in “incurable” territory. You can (and will!) get rid of the tumors with chemo -- and your oncologist is pushing the surgery department to treat you as functionally stage 3, because, by no small miracle, the cancer in your bones is showing signs of sclerosis I.e. repair.

You are healing. 

But the cancer is going to come back. It might come back as ovarian cancer next time, or lymphoma, but the doctors are certain that, left untreated, that “next time” is guaranteed.

Its okay though, honey. You got onto a really good chemo regime, and part of your treatment plan is preventative medicine. Yes, it’s going to mean hospital visits for the rest of your life. But it’s gonna be every three weeks, instead of weekly. It’s gonna mean visits that last only an hour or two, instead of like seven. 

…Yes, it will mean you can never carry a child. I’m sorry, sweetheart. I know that is one of the things that broke your heart the most. But you always wanted to adopt. That dream of a family isn’t dead and buried, and neither are you. You and me, we are going to keep it that way, ‘kay?

I know you are exhausted. But you are facing this beast with relentless joy, and I’m proud of you for that.

I know you are terrified that the chemo will stop working. I know you don’t want to die. You won’t. That isn’t your story. You have too much joy to grow and too many smiles to bring to let this be your final chapter. 

I know you are sicker than you let on, to anyone, maybe even to yourself. But you know what the really cool thing is, though all of this?

✨You’re still writing.✨

Your nails have shredded away from their beds as the chemo attacks your cells, but you are still writing.

The nerves in your hands, in your arms, are getting progressively more damaged, but you are still writing.

Your regime is one of the more intense ones; you come home from treatments and your grasp of language is all but gone; it is impossible to think straight… but you take a deep breath, and refuse to get frustrated at yourself for something that is not your fault, and you. Keep. Writing.

Sometimes you have to step back from your laptop because the nausea is too much; your muscles are cramping so terribly you can’t possibly sit at your desk for another second; the headaches split your skull open.

Constant nose bleeds. Blurred vision. Fatigue so intense you don’t even have the energy to cry about it. So many injections and IV lines you're getting scars on your hands.

Through it all, you come back, and you write.

You’ve been handed a diagnosis out of nowhere that could have broken a lot of people. I know at times it would be easier to crawl back in bed and put your life on hold while you try to get better. Instead, you’ve said “nah, respectfully, fuck that” and tried your damndest to find something to smile about every day.

I know your lung capacity is reduced from the chemo toxicity, so you can’t really sing any more. Your heart’s capacity to pump blood around your body is damaged, so you can’t go dance like an idiot in your bathroom any more when you need a pick-me-up (let’s be real, you looked like a dork anyway). And write now, writing is so, so, so fucking hard.

(Not that anyone would believe that, based on the length of this post lol. But people don’t see how many times you’ve had to take a break to shake the pain from your hands. Because you try not to talk about it. But now is the time to talk about it. Now is the time to say: I see you, my love. I see how much you are hurting, and I’m proud of you that you’ve chosen to keep on going.)

You are going to get better. You’ll live with the potential for more cancer for the rest of your life, yes, but you’ll live. You’ll live, and you’ll write.

(Hey, did you know you've managed to add 63,721 words to your longfic since your diagnosis? And done a lot of original worldbuilding and lore and nuanced character studies? Good job! Cool story! Hell yeah, queer vampires! 🖤🩸🥰🦇🔥💪💓)

Truly I cannot stress on how I'm speechless everytime I read one of their works, their genius is out of this world. The way they express a vast range of emotions so eloquently, the details that sets their writing apart, the dedication that is apparent in everything they put out, their marvellous storytelling skills, their astonishing ideas, they are without a shadow of doubt worthy of every compliment that exists in every language, far more than I could ever dream of capturing in words.

I've found solace in their worlds, when times are tough, I'd turn to their MCs and OCs, who never fail to make me feel better and push me to be more resilient in the face of adversities. Whether it's angst, fluff, smut, or any other trope, they always always deliver masterpieces.

Today's the second day of Choices Spread Kindness Celebration hosted by the amazing @lovealexhunt and it's time to show some appreciation to the talented people who share their incredible fanfictions with the fandom.

Knowing how much work and love you guys put on everything you do, I'm coming out of hiatus for a bit to hype and praise some of the lovely and talented writers still active in the fandom 💞

I'll be sharing masterlists of a few of my favorites today, and you all should go check the celebration page at @choicesfandomappreciation and find out how you can spread love and kindness too and support the writers whose fics you enjoy. 💞

Below the read more, in alphabetical order, are the links to their masterlists and which is my favorite fic of theirs:

@aallotarenunelma - not only they are a talented writer but truly kind and supportive. Here you can find their MASTERLIST. I have enjoyed all the fics I've read, but my favorite fic of theirs is the Blades's AU The Red String of Light. So beautifully written!

@jerzwriter - you can find their MASTERLIST here. I recently started reading their Wake the Dead fics and Accidental Friendship was a fun read and a great start. All the work on promoting and supporting content creators in the fandom through @choicesficwriterscreations and all the fun events they host are something I'm truly grateful for as a reader and as a writer. 💖

@julia-highstorms - you can find this super talented writer's MASTERLIST here. I love the Wake the Dead fics and the way Eli is portrayed, but my all time favorite from their Masterlist is a Tyril x MC that still lives rent free in my mind because it's so fun and funny and well-written: Bedmates. Totally recommend you check this one out ☺️

@lilyoffandoms - their beautifully written fics can be found in their MASTERLIST. This lovely and talented writer has fics from so many Choices books and pairings, and I enjoyed everything I read from their Masterlist, but Tyril x Maiele are my favorite pairing and Stars beautiful and poetic lines live rent free in my mind. 💖

@lizzybeth1986 - this writer has some of my all time favorite fics in the Choices fandom and you can find their MASTERLIST here. Everything is amazingly well-written and the themes and characters are wonderfully developed either be the friendship fics (Music Room is the most perfect scene portraying Hana and Prince Liam's friendship and this is the missing scene from TRR book 1 we deserved ❤️), the way they portray Hana Lee and her culture so respectfully and all the love and care we can see in every chapter of Eleanor's Kitchen , which is my favorite series from their fics.

@lorirwritesfanfic - my dear friend Lori is one of the most talented and generous people I had the pleasure to meet in the fandom; here's her MASTERLIST where you can found all the fics to the several books and pairings she writes for. Her fics deal with a variety of topics with care and I'm always amazed by how much she researches and how well-developed are her characters, and I love all her Desire and Decorum AUs. I can't pick only one, but Meant to Be holds a special place in my heart and Heaven Sent Company was the first fics from her that I stumbled on and I've lost count how many times I've read.

@noesapphic - this talented storyteller and creator of fierce OCs and amazing female characters has written for various Choices books, and you can find her fics in the MASTERLIST. I love all her Desire and Decorum AUs, and I appreciate the opportunity to join and befriend Noe through our collab in The cursed heiress, but For Love and Duty is my favorite now and shows how much passion and research she dedicates to her fics.

@princess-geek - another supertalented friend of mine that not only is a superb storyteller, but a generous and supportive friend, who's always uplifting others. You can find all her fics in the MASTERLIST. Even though, Unspoken Desires is amazing and I'm always excited for every new chapter, Finding my way to you will forever hold my heart and is my favorite from all of her fics for obvious reasons.

@storyofmychoices - what to even say about this positive force that has not written some of the most amazing FICS around, but hosts so many events to spread kindness around the fandom? You can find her FICS in their extensive MASTERLIST. From all I've read from her work, and the amazing pairings she writes for like Mal x Daenarya and her lovely Bryce fics, my favorites might be her domestic FICS for Moty and how she writes Levi and Lily ❤️ I remember enjoying so much Let it be and how the emotions were so well-written! Choices Spread Kindness Day 1

A bit late, but I really want to use the opportunity of @choicesfandomappreciation event to say a few words to the cool people in this fandom. Real life stuff and my own awkwardness sometimes gets in the way, but I just want everyone I've interacted on here to know that you are what make this fandom such a fun and enjoyable place. There are so many of you I could never list everyone, but that doesn't mean I won't try!

To start off, heyyy drought era mutuals and non-mutuals! The fandom was so barren when I joined, it felt like there were maybe 5 people here. But these were the 5 people who made me want to stay even through the books like [redacted] so that's how cool you are @yourqueenb @zoeywades-spouse @griffinsboyfriend @masked-alien-lesbian @choices-binglebonkus @becca-davenqueer!

Next, @gaiuskamilah love your long fandom rants, greatly appreciate your gothic romance propaganda and villain apologia. You never fail to bring up something interesting about the stories and characters you talk about, and your love for the books you talk about is contagious.

@livelaughlovecassie you are a loud supporter of women’s rights and women’s wrongs and I respect that! You’re also a sweetheart and a joy to interact with. I feel like we have similar taste in tropes and character we like, you know? You get me.

I know I'm a little late on this one, but I couldn't let the event pass with out catching up. There are so many incredible people that deserve a shout out and recognition not just during this event, but always. I wish I could truly tag every single person in this fandom, whether we've interacted or not. Every single person in this fandom matters. We might be small, but we have endured so much together. I am grateful to be on this journey with all of you.

Creator Love Day

For @choicesfandomappreciation Spread Kindness event, I wanted to give a shout out to the mods at @openheartfanfics. When I first discovered the fandom, it was their awesome directory that I lead me to so many old and new OH fics. I swear I spent a whole year as a silent reader making my way through all the amazing content.
