We were so happy with the outcomes for this Greek / Ghanaian couple and family session. Their newborn baby girl is so cute. Meet Sergio... . #Repost @massadopt --- I met Sergio and his foster family at a park in Central Massachusetts on a hot May afternoon. Shy at first, he didn’t talk much when I greeted him, but he met my fist bump with a good-natured smile. Maytee, Sergio’s foster mom, left us to wander the park and find a good spot for some photos. “Do you have any favorite areas in the park? I know you live nearby”, I asked Sergio as we moved away from the crowded playground into the open grass. “Uh, not really,” he brushed past my question and pointed and said, “but imagine if I climbed up there and you took my pictures”. Sergio had pointed at the roof of the park’s bathhouse and even jumped up to see if he could grab a ledge. While the bathhouse roof was out of reach (and perhaps slightly out of my comfort zone), Sergio did find the perfect spot to take his photos- balanced on the fencing that bordered the brook that runs through the park. To ease my fears of him tipping off the edge, Sergio said, “Don’t worry. I have a really good grip.” After just a few minutes of coaxing, Sergio had completely come out of his shell and revealed his funny, confident, and adventurous personality. Our session was a breeze; he said knew his angles thanks to years of taking thumbnail photos for his YouTube channel and he was right. His smile was frequent and easy to capture while he told me about the different “relatable memes” he had been working on. Sergio is a tech-savvy kid and probably could teach me a thing or two about Photoshop. After our session, we met back up with his foster family, and there was another round of fist-bumps for everyone. With promises to like and subscribe, we parted ways. Sergio is an amazing kid. Dorothea Dix Sunflower Photography Mini Sessions

The sunflowers will soon be in bloom at Dorothea Dix park in Raleigh, NC!

This is a beautiful event, one you will not want to miss. This year I am hosting mini sessions at the field to take advantage of the gorgeous scenery.

If you're looking for something fun to do/experience in Raleigh, this is it. Maybe bring a picnic or stop by the State Farmers Market afterwards (it's peak peach and watermelon season).

These mini sessions are a great opportunity to get some photos with your bff, family, romantic partner, or even solo! I'd love to do some more creative style shoots, so maybe even a band looking for an album cover? I'm open to all ideas.

These photography sessions last 20 minutes and come with 10 edited images, an online gallery, and a print release, so you can get them printed wherever you prefer. All for only $200.

Due to the condensed nature of these sessions, there might not be enough time for groups with more than 4 people. If that is you, please reach out and we will discuss you needs and see what we can do.

Dorothea dix park is located in central Raleigh, close to downtown. The sunflower field is on the eastern side of the park, the easiest entrance is via the hunt drive entrance or Blair drive entrance. It's not a very far walk from the parking area, but it does require walking on a dirt path, which may not be as accessible for some (especially those wearing heels).

The sunflowers blooming is a pretty busy time for visiting the park, so I've tried to schedule my sessions at a time when it won't be quite as busy. If you'd prefer a quieter visit, opt for a Thursday session. You may want to arrive a bit before your session to ensure you can find parking.

A Different Christmas

2020 was a strange and difficult year due to the outbreak of Covid-19. With the social distancing directives, you had never been as isolated from your family and friends as you were now. Because of the virus, you and your family had agreed that this Christmas would have to be different than all the others. So it happened that for the first time you were going to spend Christmas all alone. Well, not completely alone. Your neighbour's dog Bobby was there with you. You loved your furry friend and gladly spent the holidays in his company. But you did miss the human contact.

Since you were going to be alone anyway, you didn’t bother to make any Christmas dinner. You made sure to buy Bobby a meat bone and wrap it in Christmas paper, and of course he had to have a new toy as well. You bought him a stuffed Santa, it was very ugly but you were certain he would love it anyway.

When you had just come back from a walk with Bobby and was about to get started on your not so christmassy dinner, the doorbell rang. It was Bobby’s owner, your neighbour Tom. The painfully handsome and incredibly nice, successful actor who had starstruck you the first time you met. You had become friends through your mutual love for dogs. You had always wanted a dog, but your dad had been allergic and now you had work getting in the way, so you were always more than happy to spend time with Bobby whenever you got the chance.

“Oh, look Bobby! Daddy’s here!” you told your four legged friend excitedly and he came running towards you with his tail wagging. Oh, how you loved the sound of his little paws against your floor as he ran. You were going to miss it. Then you blushed slightly as you realised that you had just referred to Tom as ‘daddy’. He smiled warmly at you as he bent down to pet Bobby.

“Thank you for having him,” Tom said appreciatively.

“Oh, trust me. The pleasure is all mine. Without him, I would have been alone all Christmas,” you told him.

“You’ve been alone all day?” Tom asked, surprisedly raising his eyebrows at you. “That’s unacceptable, it’s Christmas. Have you had dinner yet?”

“No, I was just about to make some,” you told him.

“Well, I’ve got tons of leftover Christmas food that my mother sent home with me. How about coming over to my place for dinner?” Tom offered.

“That’s incredibly nice of you, Tom. Are you sure?” you asked him.

“Of course I’m sure,” Tom told you smilingly. “Come on. I’ve got a Christmas gift for you, but I forgot it at home.”

“Oh, you really didn’t have to,” you said blushingly. “I actually have something for you too. It’s from me and Bobby, mostly Bobby actually.”

You had made Tom a gift you thought he might like. You had ordered a mug with a photograph of him and Bobby together that you had taken a while back. It had the text ‘World’s Best Dad’ on it and a print of Bobby’s paw, which you had used a photo of his paw to make.

“Really?” Tom asked surprisedly, looking intrigued. “I’m really excited to see what it is.”

You smiled in response before getting his and Bobby’s Christmas gifts to bring with you to his place. You had been there a couple of times before and really liked the atmosphere there, it was neat and homey at the same time.

You and Tom had leftover Christmas dinner together and shared a bottle of fine wine. You could feel your cheeks grow warm, but wasn’t sure whether it was the effect of the alcohol or merely Tom’s presence. He often made you flustered, seemingly effortlessly.

When it was time to exchange Christmas gifts, you both smiled at each other while Bobby was running around your legs excitedly. You threw his brand new stuffed santa for him and he soon came back with it, wagging his tail.

“He loves it,” Tom told you happily and leaned in to whisper in your ear, so Bobby wouldn’t hear. “But it’s a bit ugly, isn’t it?” You laughed at his comment.

“How superficial of you,” you playfully admonished him. “At least Bobby sees him for what’s on the inside.”

“Cotton? I’m sure he does,” Tom laughed. “Go on, open your gift.”

“Open yours first,” you told him.

“Let’s open them at the same time,” Tom suggested and you agreed.

As you unwrapped your gift and realised that it was in a box with the exact same size as the box you had just handed to Tom, your heart skipped a beat. It couldn’t be. But it was! You felt tears fill your eyes as you saw the picture on the mug of you and Bobby and the text ‘World’s Best Dog Sitter’ on it. It was the sweetest gift you had ever received. You looked up at Tom to thank him and noticed that he too was staring at his gift with watery eyes.

“I love it,” Tom told you and brought you into a hug.

“I love it too,” you replied as you hugged him back hard. “More than you can imagine.”

“I’m so glad to hear,” Tom replied. You parted from the hug and both admired your gifts for a moment when the central figure of the evening reappeared with the ugly santa in his mouth. You both knelt down to pet him. Bobby was wagging his tail from excitement and looked at the two of you expectantly. Tom grabbed the toy that Bobby had put on the floor in front of you and threw it across the room. As you both turned back from looking at him run, your faces were just centimetres away from each other.

“We’re not so good at keeping a distance, are we?” you joked blushingly as he looked you in the eyes. He smiled at you and you at him.

“I suppose we’re not,” he agreed, but made no effort to move away from you. You could feel the smell of his cologne and felt a shrill of excitement run down your spine. “Since the damage has probably already been done,” he added and leaned in to kiss you. You deepened the kiss as you shut your eyes and put your arms around his neck. He tasted of the wine you had just had and you absolutely loved it. Before you could go full makeout session, there was a playful bark coming from right next to you. You and Tom instantly parted from each other and looked at the playful Bobby. “How about a Christmas walk in the park?” Tom suggested.

“‘I would love to,” you replied with a smile. It had been a very different Christmas this year, but thanks to Tom and Bobby, it had been different in the best way possible.

24th August 2021: Great Crested Grebe with chicks, Brimstone and more at Lakeside and home photos

I took the first two pictures in this photoset of one of a few great views out the back I loved taking in as I worked on a very sunny and hot day and the bright pink geraniums on the balcony. I took the third, fourth and fifth pictures in this photoset on the way down to and at the calmly and beautifully blue lake. I saw some lovely red male Common Darters on the walk with one nicely out the front on the way here always great to get a dragonfly around the estate I find adding a bit of wildlife flair.

I then inspected both the Black-headed Gulls on beach lake to see if any terns had dropped in as they did around this time year last year some of my best walks whilst working from home memories and the long-standing pair of Great Crested Grebes on Kornwestheim lake which I had noticed still nesting this week and they were still around the area together again. I then was delighted as I crossed the bridge like others which was nice to see taking in stunning views on this hot day to see the Mute Swan in the sixth picture in this photoset. I was just thinking earlier how I hadn’t seen any here for a while and I got a great intimate view of it swimming around and felt the light landed almost angelically on it which was great and I enjoyed this for photos.

Rounding Concorde lake shown in the seventh picture I took today in this photoset taking the path to the west of it south to north and looking back over it from the north scanning in the binoculars I was thrilled to see I was monitoring the wrong pair if I wanted to see some more Great Crested Grebe chicks at Lakeside this year after seeing the pair of chicks from a pair on beach lake in April and May that didn’t survive long ultimately. As there with a pair of Great Crested Grebes I could just make out the distinctive sight of young chicks safely tucked into the back feathers of an adult. And from afar I noticed these striped like a humbug beauties go onto the water very briefly. I walked around to a spot to look out on the water closer to them and they were so well hidden compared to other baby Great Crested Grebes I have had the pleasure of seeing on their parent’s backs especially this year and last and especially here that I wondered if I’d imagined it. But sure enough after using the minutes I just about had enough of to spare at lunch time thanks to getting round the rest of the walk fairly fast I noticed when the other adult came to pass food the beaks and feathers of the young ones so I did get more precious views of these exceptional baby birds. I feel so happy that with multiple pairs of Great Crested Grebes around a real valued asset for the wild side of this country park and after one pair unfortunately didn’t succeed ultimately there is another chapter to the Lakeside Great Crested Grebe story of 2021. I took the eighth picture in this photoset with a chick visible as well as others that I tweeted on Dans_Pictures tonight. There was a sense of atonement as I was so lucky with seeing really young Great Crested Grebes a few places all together this year to see some on an adult’s back at Rutland Water’s Egleton reserve on Saturday. In dark conditions in the midst of the quite heavy rain we saw for the second half of that day I tried for a bridge camera photo but it did not turn out well and it was one of the very few ideas for photos I didn’t pursue when home from the big trip away for us.

On the way out going back past beach lake and up the central path between the two fenced off nature reserve areas I enjoyed seeing a bright Brimstone flitting about quite closely, as I reflected in my mind lately about the start of spring when these and Peacocks were flying around enriching the landscape. I noticed a nice tree with yellow autumn leaves too and before seeing the grebe family saw another species with a late baby bird with a a great fluffy Moorhen chick which was nice.

I had a great quick session at the flower bed area around the estate with my macro lens on the way home, seeing the oxeye daisy and my first ever parsley water dropwort (but not first dropwort I’ve seen) aka water celery shown in the ninth and tenth pictures I took today in this photoset respectively as well as viper’s-bugloss which I’d not seen in this specific area before, crimson flax, the orange poppy tangled with some of the lots of white clover around nicely which I tweeted a picture of tonight, chamomile and others. A great day today I hope you all had a good one.

Wildlife Sightings Summary: One of my favourite birds the Great Crested Grebe, Moorhen, Coot, Mallard, Mute Swan, Greylag Goose, Black-headed Gull, Goldfinch, House Sparrow, Starling, Woodpigeon, Feral Pigeon by the water’s edge at beach lake nicely, Magpie and Jackdaw well along the fence posts of the central path where I’m seeing a lot of them lately, Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood, Brimstone butterfly and moth.

Also forgive me, I couldn’t find any NICE pictures of Jotaro with his Uncle so instead we get a prime example of why you’re the favorite in the family.

For obvious reasons, Josuke really likes how polite and caring you are, and let’s be honest, it really helps that his “little” niece or nephew is this really cute person in their 20s.

The resemblance to Jotaro is uncanny, and by extension to Josuke. At first he was unsure and didn’t need the attachment of more family other than his mother, but when you begin to tear up and hug him tightly saying you’re happy to meet him, he can’t help the swell of pride he has knowing in some way you belong to him. It’s a hard to describe feeling.

“Haha! Well... I can’t really tell, you see I’m actually kind of really blind at the moment without my glasses, and Bubba crushed them with his fat ass on the way here. But I’ll agree with you, since you kind of sound like me too!”

“My sibling means to say you sound as dorky and plucky as they do.”

“SHUT UP JOJO!”

“Hey, so, ignore my Bubba, he’s got no manners. But it’s really nice to meet you. If I’m being honest... I’ve always wanted an Uncle, and I hope maybe if you don’t want to take on that role maybe we could be friends? I’ve got a Stand too!”

Queen’s Requiem of Sword looks different when you call her out, sporting a visor over her eyes that echoes your developing blindness and wearing what looks to be a Victorian wedding dress, but that’s to be expected. Since your Stand awakened you’ve been training nonstop with her. She’s learned a lot of neat tricks, and she entertains Crazy Diamond with her new Kulning ability. You told Josuke that you were dragged to Morioh by your brother during a particularly intense training session in the French Alps, so you’re still bundled up like you’re going to fucking Antarctica. Josuke makes a comment about how you’ll never have to hear him scold you for leaving the house without a sweater.

“You live in France?”

He’s positively fascinated when you nod excitedly and tell him about your life in the French countryside with your husband and twin boys. Josuke was unsure about getting to know his new found family, but you make it so easy with your friendliness that he can’t help but encourage you to go on about yourself.

Josuke is a Grand Uncle! He’s got two grand nephews: Thomas and Guillaume Emmanuel Polnareff (you tell him when he struggles over the pronunciation that you can simply call him Guy Manuel, it’s what Grandpa Joseph does), and you produce a small photo album which he flips through eagerly. Amazed to see two little boys with freckles and starlight hair, and even more touched when in some pictures he can see little twin stars on the back of their necks.

“I live in Hautvillers. My momma, your sister Holly, she moved with me when we had the kiddos, I didn’t want her to stay in Japan where she didn’t have anyone. Honestly Bubba isn’t the best at keeping contact, don’t tell anyone that, but this whole thing with the will and upsetting Granny has been the most I’ve spent with him in like, ten whole years...”

“You didn’t want to stay?”

You shake your head, telling him about all the bad memories you had here, the neglect from your father, the death of your first love, nothing tied you down here except your mother. And the second your husband put the deposit down for the ring you asked your Grandpa (his father) to sell the house and give her the money to move into the house next door.

Josuke finds himself asking you all sorts of questions about his grandfather. What kind of a person is he? Why cheat on the love of his life? There are quite a few hurtful ones peppered in there as well that you don’t quite know how to answer, because Josuke is trying very hard to hate his father, and you were practically raised by him your entire life.

“I can answer some questions for you Uncle, can I call you that? But I’m going to be honest with you... all I’ve ever known is that Joseph Joestar is a good man, and that’s the god’s honest truth. If he would have known, he wouldn’t have let your mother pay for anything for you. He would have possibly taken both of you to New York with him like he did when I didn’t want to finish high school in Japan. He all but dragged my mother with me, I know what it’s like, and I can’t imagine what your mom went through. Mine did it with two kids, and there were times I had to keep my mouth shut so my grandpa wouldn’t find out how much my mom was struggling. I know what a deadbeat dad is, my parents were married all nice and proper and he barely gave her enough money to feed me and my brother, let alone her. Greedy bastard didn’t even come home often enough for me to remember what he looks like.”

He’s quiet as you let out your frustrations and rage against your father. It’s familiar, this feeling of abandonment. Underneath that kind exterior he works so hard to maintain he’s just as angry as you are, and for a minute doesn’t want to believe what you’re telling him. He wants to believe he’s alone because it’s easier, you told him you never asked where your deadbeat dad was but he did. Neither he nor his mother aware of the double life Joseph was living at the time, Josuke would see other kids on the playground and cry wondering how come he didn’t have a daddy to push him on the swings.

He’s actually fairly jealous of you, and it doesn’t help that his friends are just as captivated by your enthusiasm and overly friendly nature. You got all the best parts it seems, and now that you’ve told him all the best qualities of Joseph: spending your summers playing with him in Central Park, the times at the Met, or even just the general sweetness, he can’t help but let the resentment bubble that you had the life he wanted.

All of that resentment melts away however, when you casually wrap your arm around Josuke, and he feels your warmth even though your body temperature is unnanturaly low because of your stand.

“Hey, if you ever just wanna get away, you and your momma always have a room in France or a plane ticket. If you don’t have passports I can help with that too. I don’t know if you’d like to, but my boys wanted to meet you. Jean Jean was really excited too, and he couldn’t stop blabbing about how wonderful it was to find my family. Now I’m starting to see how right he was. I’m really glad I came with Jotaro to meet you.”

Darling Lili in New York, or Where Were You the Night Julie Andrews Played Radio City Music Hall and Stole Manhattan’s Heart?

This is the second in a series of commemorative posts to mark the 50th anniversary of Darling Lili, the last of the 1960s Julie Andrews screen musicals. In the preceding post, we looked at the film’s fraught production history up to and including its World Premiere at Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome on 23 June 1970. Here, we turn attention to the film’s New York bow which took place a month later on 23 July at the city’s fabled Radio City Music Hall.

Nicknamed “the show place of the nation”, Radio City Music Hall was for much of the mid-twentieth century the venue of choice for big event film releases. The theatre’s monumental size, architectural opulence, state-of-the-art technology, and pre-show stage spectacles made it “the quintessential motion picture palace,” and Hollywood studios jockeyed to secure bookings at “the Hall” for their most prestigious pictures (Goldman, 97-98).

During the late-60s, Paramount, the studio behind Darling Lili, enjoyed a run of extremely successful summer bookings at Radio City Music Hall. Its 1967 release, Barefoot in the Park broke house records for the longest run at the Hall with a 12-week season, only to be bested the following year by another Paramount comedy, The Odd Couple which ran for 14-weeks (”Trouble”, 114). It was something of a PR coup, therefore, when, in January 1970, Paramount announced with much fanfare that Darling Lili would make its official premiere as the summer attraction at Radio City Music Hall later in the year (”Par Gets”, 3). The deal even made the front cover of Boxoffice magazine with a photo of Frank Yablans, Paramount general sales manager, proudly signing the booking contract with Music Hall president, James F. Gould (″Sign of Summer,”, cover).

Barely had the ink dried on the deal, however, when Paramount changed tack. Hit by the toughest industry recession in decades and spooked by a precipitous downturn in the market for big-budget roadshow films, Paramount execs implemented a wholesale revision of studio operations, including a brutal hard-prune of their production and release schedules (Dick, 120ff). By April, earlier plans to give Darling Lili a high profile release had been ditched and, in its stead, Paramount decided to offload the film cheaply as part of a bundle of eight titles slated for saturation release during the summer off-season. Dubbed the “Big Summer Playoff,” the aim was to issue the films widely and quickly so that they could “saturate every major and minor market with single-house firstruns and key city multiples” (“Paramount’s Summer Playoff”, 5). In an era when important films were typically given carefully staggered roll-outs, it was an unorthodox move that fuelled advance perceptions of Darling Lili as a bomb of such magnitude that even its own studio had lost hope. As one newspaper commentator put it, Paramount “seems to have dumped the expensive movie rather than spend any more on it” (Taylor, 21-E).

Radio City Music Hall, by contrast, stuck to its original plans to exhibit Darling Lili as a high-profile summer spectacular. With Paramount having started to issue the film haphazardly to theatres across the nation in June, the opening of Darling Lili at Radio City on July 23 would no longer be a world premiere -- that honour was hastily devolved to Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome -- but the Hall persisted in proudly billing its run as “the New York premiere”. As Variety wryly noted: “Music Hall has never played a pic which hasn’t been a New York first, although perhaps someone there thought the tourists may have thought Lili was otherwise in that the film opened nationally a month ago” (”New York”, 20).

While not strictly a roadshow presentation, Radio City Music Hall exhibited Darling Lili with all the trappings of a hardticket prestige release. Seats were available via a mix of both premium reserved and general admission with special complimentary programs issued to patrons at all sessions. The theatre screened the film in wide-gauge 70mm with 6-track stereophonic sound, one of only two US venues to do so. Projected on the Hall’s 70′x40′ motion picture screen -- the largest indoor screen in the world at the time -- the film would have looked and sounded amazing (Goldman, 99). As an added point of appeal, screenings were supported by one of the Hall‘s famous live stage entertainments: in this case, a Spanish-themed spectacular with symphony orchestra, flamenco dancers, guitarists and, of course, the legendary high-kicking Rockettes (Jose, 54). In addition, the Hall lavished Darling Lili with a solid promotional buildup, taking out full page ads in key newspapers, and using strategically-placed billboards and transit ads around town.

It was an old-school approach of event-style cinema showmanship that paid off handsomely. Even before Darling Lili opened at the Hall, there was “an unprecedented advance demand” for tickets, leading the theatre to double the number of reserved seats from 900 to 1,800 for all sessions. “We’ve added reserve seats on a few occasions previously,” observed a theatre rep, but “only during the heavily crowded Christmas and Easter holiday seasons” and never...during the summer,” adding that he had “no idea” what had generated the extraordinary advance demand (Weiler, 37).

The good news continued when the film opened on July 23 with a box-office rush that broke all house records, prompting the theatre to increase reserve bookings even further to 2500 seats in an effort to accommodate the clamour for tickets (“’Lili’ Hitting Peak,” E-2). As Variety commented:

“Radio City’s Darling Lili...is the summer blockbuster all the auspices hoped it would be, with $285,000 or close expected for kickoff session. Pic is curious in that its longtime postproduction shelving had spurred rumors of disastrous artistic results. But film has shown legs in crosscountry openings and both critical and word-of-mouth opinion in Manhattan has been mixed at worst. Some response is downright enthusiastic” (“’Lili’ and Revue,” 9).

Darling Lili continued its bullish box-office run in New York, long after any initial novelty buzz should have subsided. Weekly grosses inched higher for a few weeks before settling into a very healthy $200K+ per week plateau. Come mid-August, Variety noted with thinly-veiled surprise that:

“Radio City Music Hall is experiencing a slight phenomenon with its current Darling Lili attraction. It’s not unusual during the summer tourist season for popular Hall programs to maintain or build grosses...but few remain in such a narrow range as has Lili to date. First week tally of $280,000 was a non-holiday record. Second was upped to $288,000. Now third session is headed for $280,000....70mm projection and sound are plus-values in a package which Hall president James Gould predicts will run until late September” (“N.Y. Full,” 9).

In the end Darling Lili did run at Radio City Music Hall until late-September -- September 23, to be precise -- when it closed to make way for the pre-booked Sophia Loren-vehicle, Sunflower. Across its 9-week run, the film grossed in excess of $2million in ticket sales, making it one of the theatre’s biggest summer hits to date (“Picture Grosses,” 15).

The commercial success of Darling Lili at the Hall was music to the ears of the film’s star who, in a rare moment of unguarded hubris, admitted to a measure of self-satisfaction at news of the booming box office receipts:

“‘I’m not so interested for myself,’ she explained, ‘but I’m happy for Blake. He has been so maligned about this picture that I am delighted he is receiving some vindication...I think he managed to make a vastly enjoyable film...People are entertained by it; the Music Hall figures seem to prove that.’ [T]he actress had mild reproof for the releasing company, Paramount, over its handling of the film: ‘Three weeks before the opening, there was no advertising campaign. None whatsoever. Paramount didn’t seem to know how it was going to sell the picture--or if. I simply can’t understand an attitude like that’” (Thomas: 13).

Julie’s chiding of Paramount for its poor handling of Darling Lili was not mere sour grapes. Once the studio had decided to issue the film as part of a summer saturation bundle, it effectively abandoned any semblance of cogent or even halfway organised marketing. As outlined in our earlier post, there was little rationale to the film’s distribution. Lili appeared suddenly and briefly at second-run theatres and drive-ins across disparate suburban and provincial areas, while major metropolitan venues didn’t get the film till much later, if at all. In many markets, the film was booked for a fleeting season of a week or two – in some cases, just a few days -- and it was frequently paired as a double-bill with a host of poorly selected partner titles (Caen, 6-B).

The studio’s approach to promotion was no better. A generic pressbook and merchandising manual was issued, but it was very bare-bones and perfunctory. In the absence of a clear marketing plan, local exhibitors were left to promote the film more or less any way they liked. Advertisements were frequently altered to pitch Darling Lili in diverse, and often contradictory, ways. The main advertising art provided by Paramount -- with its central image of Julie in mid-song set within a sepia frame of art nouveau swirls -- positioned the film principally as a nostalgic star musical with touches of adult romance. Many local exhibitors took a very different approach. Some tried to reframe it as wholesome child-friendly fare: “This summer’s one and only total family entertainment;” “It’s Julie at her best! It’s for your family” (“This Summer,” 24). Other theatres pegged it as “a man’s movie,” stressing the action and warfare elements with taglines like “See the Best Dogfights of World War I” or “If you enjoyed Blue Max you’ll love Darling Lili” (“Man’s Movie”, 13; “Palms”, 64). Some exhibitors even openly recycled graphics from The Blue Max and other WW1 action films, with one Florida venue going so far as to revive the film’s original working title: Darling Lili, or Where Were You the Night You Said You Shot Down Baron Von Richtofen? (“Amusements,” 11A).

Elsewhere, exhibitors implemented a rash of dubious promotional incentives such as “twofers” or free entry to "one child under 12...with the purchase of one adult admission to Darling Lili” (“Capri”, 2D). A theatre in Fort Lauderdale offered “free admission to World War I veterans in uniform during matinees Monday through Friday” (“’Darling Lili’ Ducats,” 5D). Possibly well-intentioned gestures but it was bottom-barrel marketing that fostered an unfortunate aura of abject desperation around the film that likely turned off more patrons than it enticed.

Against this sorry backdrop of shambolic distribution and ham-fisted marketing, the meticulous handling of Darling Lili at Radio City Music Hall served as a strikingly singular counterpoint. The remarkable commercial success of the film at that venue -- which, if reported figures are to be believed, represented well over a third of the film’s entire US grosses (“US Films,” 184) -- can only be attributed in good part to the care and professionalism with which the Hall managed the film’s exhibition. One can’t help but wonder, therefore, how different the overall commercial fate of Darling Lili might have been had Paramount exercised a more discriminating distribution plan, affording the film the kind of special-event release it enjoyed in New York. It’s unlikely Lili would ever have been a major hit -- it was simply too narrow in appeal and out-of-step with the rapidly changing times -- but it certainly could have gone much further in recouping costs and might even have realised a modest profit. At a minimum, it would have helped redeem the film from its unjust reputation as the “Edsel that almost bankrupted Paramount Pictures” (Rosenfield, 5).

As a coda to this account of the exceptional history of Darling Lili at the Radio City Music Hall, it is interesting to note that the film fared well in New York not just commercially but also critically, Some of the film’s best US reviews came from New York critics -- a surprising turn-of-events given how notoriously hostile the East Coast critical establishment had been to Julie Andrews’ earlier screen musicals. Wanda Hale of the New York Daily News gave Darling Lili three-and-a-half stars out of four, writing:

“Radiantly beautiful, elegantly turned out, Julie Andrews graces Radio City Music Hall in a burst of song and dance, adventure and romance...[I]t’s Darling Lili everybody loves, so will you, you Music Hall patrons--you and the family” (Hale, 39).

Vincent Canby (1970) of the New York Times found Darling Lili “a pure if not perfect comedy” with “a lot of perverse charm and real cinematic beauty.” He continued:

“Although Julie Andrews (the film, not stage, star) has always struck me as a very mitigated delight, she may be the perfect centerpiece for this sort of fantasy. That is, her angular, aggressive profile, combined with her coolness and precision as a comedienne and a singer, give the immediate, comic lie to the adventures of a supposedly irresistible femme fatale. She thus is immensely funny...” (16).

In a rare honour, the New York Times afforded Darling Lili a second review from Roger Greenspan (1970) who argued for the film as a minor masterpiece of refined, borderline philosophical, sensibilities. “[O]ne very bright critic I know...has already compared the film, ecstatically, with Max Ophul’s great Lola Montes,” he remarked before launching into his own rhapsodic paean:

“To her characterisation, Miss Andrews brings a precision of gesture that matches Edwards’s directorial precision and that constitutes one of the most excitingly controlled expressions of theatrical presence I have ever seen in a movie. Not cold; elegant, finely drawn, perfect of its period--and yet inward, self-sustaining, as if already committed to that gorgeously contemplative state of transport that is the subject of the movie within the movie to look for in Darling Lili” (S2-10).

In a similar move, the inaugural issue of the New York-based cinephile journal, On Film devoted not one but two essay-tributes to Darling Lili from Stuart Byron and Mike Prokosch respectively. The former gushed:

“Darling Lili comes at the end of the big-budget musical cycle, and it [is] one of the only...good things to come out of the whole rotten effort to reduplicate The Sound of Music. But in any case, a masterpiece it is--Blake Edwards’ most beautiful film to date and surely his most meaningful. ... Edwards is the first director to utilise Julie Andrews’ full resources. Her rapid manner of speaking becomes the neutral fulcrum of her moods--it is sincerity hiding danger, or bitterness hiding love. Her singing, however tender on the surface, always gives the impression of concealing a quick intelligence ready to spring forth when needed” (Byron 1970, 31, 34).

Prokosch (1970) was equally smitten, calling Darling Lili “the only work of art Hollywood ha[s] released in 1970″:

“First. one must forget one’s preconceptions of Julie Andrews and look at the way Blake Edwards, the film’s director, casts his wife with remarkable shrewdness: Lili Smith is a young British singer caught in a situation she cannot master. What more natural part could Julie Andrews want? ... Darling Lili is really gutsy in its formal expression...Edwards’ control of the...formal means at his disposal--stylized lighting and colour, split-up background compositions, and especially cutting--displays a...complete knowledge of their emotional effect. What makes Darling Lili unique among recent releases, though, is its careful structuring. Almost every sequence...takes a clear place in the design of the film” (96).

If it sounds like these critics were a little woozy on the then new wine of auteur film theory, a measure of sobriety was served by none other than Andrew Sarris, chief architect of American auteurism, who filed a somewhat more reserved, but nevertheless appreciative, review of Darling Lili for the Village Voice:

“Darling Lili is cinema a la folie, a rhapsody of romantic madness amid the current cacophony of absurdist dissonances, a sentimental valentine from Blake Edwards to Julie Andrews complete with gypsy violins and a Snoopy sub-plot about the Red Baron and the Dawn Patrol...but I’m afraid it won’t work for most audiences on any level. Its ingredients -- romance, satire, musical comedy, deadpan farce -- mix without blending. The song numbers don’t soar high enough and the prats don’t fall hard enough. But Darling Lili is never less than likeable, and its graceful professionalism is especially refreshing in this long hot summer of assorted crudities” (Sarris 1970, 47).

Despite his reservations, Sarris still included Darling Lili in his end-of-year list of the best films of 1970 -- as did several other Village Voice critics: Stuart Byron, Richard Corliss, Stephen Gottlieb, and William Paul (Sarris 1971, 59).

Now, if only the critics and audiences west of the Hudson had shown Darling Lili half-as-much love as the crowds at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, who knows how different the course of Hollywood history -- or at least that of the Julie Andrews screen musical -- might have been...

Back in July we shot the first half of this lifestyle session but were rained out in a sudden (and very unexpected) downpour… right at the start of our cake smash. No worries, I heard the kids still got to eat the slightly-rained-on cake once they got home and dried off. So it was naturally in the cards that our second attempt would also have iffy weather, haha. We rescheduled to the next morning…
