Hiiii I've just posted chapter 1 of my Hell's Kitchen AU where Dean is competing, and Cas is a sous chef. Here's a snippet for you:

If You Can't Stand the Heat...

Walking into the dining room for the first time, Dean felt a wave of terror that he hadn’t anticipated. Suddenly he felt wildly out of place, and shoved his hands into his pockets in the hopes that their shaking wouldn’t give him away to the others as someone weak to pick off. 

They gathered around the kitchen’s pass in a semicircle, that heady mixture of arrogance and bravado that had followed some of the group from the bus was beginning to subside, sending nervous ripples through the group. Dean rocked backward on his heels a little, hoping to appear nonchalant. He was seriously considering walking straight back out through the front doors and hitching a ride to a gas station Bobby might pick him up from when he heard footsteps in the corridor behind the kitchen. A sharp elbow caught him in the ribs, and his head snapped to the left where his eyes found Charlie beaming up at him, almost vibrating with excitement. He smiled back, some of his nerves abating. 

The footsteps in the corridor materialized as Chef Crowley strode into the kitchen and walked up to face the group from behind the pass. He was a little shorter than Dean had expected, though he had no doubt that infamous personality more than made up for that. 

‘Welcome to Hell’s Kitchen!’ Crowley smiled as he said it, but it was devious more than it was friendly. The group applauded and some cheered, though Dean was having a little trouble breathing enough to remain conscious, let alone cheer. He’d followed Crowley’s career for years, studying his recipes and keeping track of his accolades, hoping that one day he’d see his own name in similar headlines and articles. ‘Each of you had been selected out of the thousands of applicants from all across America; you showed potential, talent and passion in your applications, and I have high hopes for each of you. With that said, it’s time for you to cook your signature dish. I want to see what you’re about. 

‘Before you get into the kitchen, I’d like to introduce you to your sous chefs. For the red team, he’s a celebrated and highly awarded chef with five Michelin stars, most recently for the incredible desserts at his flagship restaurant Angel’s Food Cake on the east coast. Everyone please welcome Castiel Novak.’ Applause and cheers broke out among the group of chefs as Castiel walked through the back door to the kitchen and made his way to stand beside chef Crowley. His gaze swept across the chefs crowded in front of him, appraising each of them in turn. His eyes rested on Dean for a moment before Crowley began to speak again.

Thanks to @sheepstiel i have soup headcanons now, so... imagine though if the soup was actually a thing between them, that comes up from time to time from like late season 4 every time Dean is having any minor discomfort. Cas catches on early about the tomato rice soup, and decides to learn how to make it, and Dean really appreciates but they both get increasingly frustrated bc while it gets progressively better and better until Cas in his fury makes a better tomato rice soup than any michelin star chef... it’s just not Like That.

So in s12 Cas takes the opportunity at some point to ask Mary about it and she’s like... oh that. That was instant soup. Sorry. 😐

So Cas FINALLY learns the damn brand name and next time Dean is in need of soup the soup will finally be Like That and Dean will cry a little and eat the entire 4 serving size in one sitting.

How to Earn Rewards Without a Credit Card.

I would love to know what you thought in the comments and if you have different recommendations for me of what to order. That being said, it was a crazy fun experience with friends, one that I have no problem recommending at least once, but for me, I will probably not wait the hour next time I am in town. Of course, it was good, but I feel the portions are more shocking than how it tastes, which was less then I expected. It pains me to say this, but my excitement over the experience was slightly curbed after eating the food. I settled on the Salmon Eggs Benedict as that is one of my favorite meals, others at my table ordered everything from pancakes to griddle meals. I wish I would have known in advance how much food you get, or I undoubtedly would have shared, I don’t see how one person can eat a plate here. I didn’t know what to pick, but luckily there were six of us, so there was a lot of sharing going on. They also had a BLT Bloody Mary, which came with the bread, lettuce, and tomato and the Bloody Mary in between. I mean, there was even a S’mores mocha, which was amazing. The standout on the menu was the college special though, which was literally a side of bacon and a 24-ounce bud light in a bag. The first thing you notice about this place is how crazy the menu is it has everything. An hour later, we were walking back to our table.

Everyone in my life told me how I needed to go to this famed San Diego spot that specialized in portions that could feed you for a week. You know those places that everyone tells you to go to? The ones that creep into a conversation like a secret that you can’t help but tell? Hash House A Go-Go was that for me.

“The salmon's eighty-sixed, Garth. Make sure the servers know. Tell 'em to push the pork medallions instead.”

“You got it, chef!” The lanky expeditor hustles out of the kitchen, and Dean turns back to the flat top. Nothing he's tending there requires his full attention, so his thoughts and his eyes drift, as usual, to the Patissier's station in the corner.

Castiel Novak had been one of Dean's first hires when he'd opened Impala, and not a day has gone by since that he hasn't thanked the culinary gods for that blessing. Cas's mousses are the airiest, his pâte sucrée the tenderest, his crèmes brûlées the richest Dean's ever had the privilege to taste. Last week he'd put together a mugwort panna cotta with blowtorched berries, whipped cream, roast peach ice cream, and honeycomb that had been so delicious, so elegant, so perfectly balanced that Dean had almost passed out when he'd tasted it. He'd had to put the spoon down after the third bite and sit with his head between his knees until the ringing in his ears stopped.

Rumor is that Impala is on track to gain its first star this year. If (fingers crossed) that does come to pass, Dean knows he'll have Cas to thank. To end a meal at Impala with one of Cas's desserts is to walk out of the restaurant with joy in your heart. Even the most jaded Michelin inspector is powerless to resist that joy.

Dean rearranges the medallions on the grill, pulls a few to plates, and passes them off to Jo, his Entremetier. It feels good to be on the line tonight. As the owner, he's Chef de Cuisine, and generally spends his time in his office, fine-tuning menus and dealing with their suppliers. When his Grillardin Benny had called this morning to say his wife was in labor and he'd need to start his paternity leave a little early, Dean had jumped at the chance to cover his station for the night. It's been too long since he'd spent a shift in the kitchen, and he's missed it. The bustle and chaos of a dinner service feeds his soul in a way that nothing else can.

Besides the pleasure of nostalgia, there's another reason he was happy to rotate in as a Station Chef for the night instead of letting his Chef de Tournant pick up the slack. At the moment, that reason is drizzling spiced red wine syrup across a vanilla bean and yuzu pot de crème. Dean watches him work for so long that he almost overcooks a filet, yanking it off the heat just before it crosses the death line from medium rare to bleccchh.

He's known Cas for seven years now. Together with the rest of their core staff, they've built Impala up from the ground with their bare hands. They've been through the wars side by side, in a way, and the bond they share as a result is profound. He'd readily claim anyone on his line as a blood brother (or sister), and he feels closer to some of them than he does to his actual family. But he's always sensed a different... flavor to the connection he and Cas have.

It's pretty clear the feeling goes both ways. They've expressed it in shy smiles and lingering touches, and there have been many moments over the years when Dean's been sure Cas would be more than receptive to a kiss. But he's been loath to cross that line. He's seen the havoc that sexual entanglements can wreak on a kitchen. (Thank you Jesus, Mary, and Auguste Escoffier that Andréa came along a couple years ago and settled Benny's ass down for good before he'd managed to dick his way through Dean's entire Brigade de Cuisine!)

Dean would never endanger their working relationship, and the success they've built together, for a quick fumble in the walk-in (even though that's a scenario he's envisioned in detail more times than he can count, especially when he's in the shower). It's time to admit, though, that what he wants with Cas has progressed light years beyond fumble territory. The walk-in fantasy shares equal billing these days with something much more domestic – a soft-focus vignette of the two of them making dinner together in the kitchen of a house they share. He imagines glancing touches, shared jokes, dropping a kiss on Cas's cheek as he hands him a whisk. It makes him ache in a way the dirty thoughts never do, with a sweet pain like pressing his finger against a love bite, and he can never keep away from the feeling for long.

Despite his intention to enjoy his nostalgic night back on the line, he passes the rest of the service with his mind in the clouds, lost in daydreams about him and Cas at the farmer's market, him and Cas shopping for a new bed, him and Cas in the new bed (hey, he's only human). Before he knows it, the last plate has gone out to the floor and it's time to tear down the stations before the cleaning crew shows up.

He stretches, and his back and feet scream at him, reminders that he's not as young as he was the last time he worked a dinner rush. As much as he'd like to head straight home and collapse, he does have a bit of paperwork on his desk that he needs to sort out before the morning deliveries. He gives a wave and a “thanks, everyone” to the rest of his kitchen and returns to his office.

He's stapling the last receipt when there's a knock at his door, and Cas peeks his head in.

“You're still here,” he says in his rock salt voice. “Good. I brought you something.” With a flourish that he must have picked up from their headwaiter, he sets a small plate on Dean's desk. On it are three small scoops of ice cream. “Let me know what you think.”

“Are these new recipes you're working on?” Dean asks as he takes the spoon Cas is holding out to him and digs in to the scoop at 4 o'clock.

“No, nothing like that. I just wanted to give you something.”

Dean quirks an eyebrow at that, and is about to inquire further when the taste of the ice cream hits his tongue. There's honey in there, and double cream, but the top note is delicate and elusive. He lets the flavors expand as the heat of his mouth warms the ingredients...

“Chamomile?” he asks uncertainly. Cas nods. “Interesting. I like it.”

He carves off a bit of the second scoop. This one is pale pink, and tastes of... “Vanilla and... Roses?” Another nod. In a less skilled hand, the flavor would be bitter or perfumey, coating his mouth and his nose, but Cas has given him something ethereal. He takes another, bigger spoonful and savors it before moving on to the third scoop, which looks chocolatey.

There's definitely cacao in there, but yet again something unexpected is entwined with it. Dean considers for a moment. “...Lavender?”

Cas grins. “Perfect score, chef.” Then his expression changes to something bashful, making him look uncannily like a school boy standing in front of his crush, holding out a scraggly just-picked bunch of...

“Cas,” Dean says slowly, as a realization dawns. “Are you giving me flowers?”

A blush spreads across his pastry chef's cheeks, but he looks Dean straight in the eyes when he answers. “It's a customary way to indicate romantic interest, is it not?”

Il peut sembler paradoxal d’entreprendre une publication sur Louis Jouvet au cinéma. Il fut avant tout homme de théâtre, et cet engagement total de son intelligence, de son savoir, de toute sa personne parait exclure de sa part toute approche, même furtive, de cet art cinématographique qui, de son temps, était déjà “une écriture”. Pourtant, il a tourné trente-deux films… Mais lorsqu’il apparut pour la première fois au cinéma, il avait 46 ans (Topaze, première version, en 1933), c’est-à-dire à une époque où sa gloire de comédien et d’animateur dramatique était acquise et éclatante.  C’est donc un homme d’une maturité artistique accomplie, d’une notoriété et mondialement reconnue qui va débuter au cinéma, et dans un rôle consacré déjà par le succès, mais qu’il n’a jamais joué. Pourquoi un tel retard ? On est évidemment tenté de répondre qu’avant 1933 le cinéma présentait peu d’attrait pour un comédien aussi profondément enraciné que lui dans le théâtre. Le cinéma muet avait ses stars, étrangères pour la plupart à l’art dramatique, et dans les deux ou trois premières années de son existence le film parlant fit une large place à la comédie musicale, à l’opérette, à ces “movies show” style Broadway melody ou Our dancing daughters (Les Nouvelles vierges) qui déclenchèrent en Europe les Congrès s’amuse et les Chemin du paradis… Que serait donc allé faire dans ces délectables “friandises cinématographiques” le créateur de Siegfried, le continuateur, à la Comédie des Champs-Elysées, du Vieux-Colombier de Copeau ? Pourtant ce n’est peut-être pas par manque d’intérêt pour lui que Louis Jouvet se tint éloigné du cinéma jusqu’à 46 ans : c’est tout simplement parce que jusque-là il n’eut pas le temps de s’y intéresser… [Anthologie du cinéma – Louis Jouvet – Roger Régent (L’Avant-Scène du cinéma, avril 1969)]

Louis Jouvet entra pour la première fois dans un studio de prise de vue en 1933 pour incarner ce petit professeur de la pension Muche dans Topaze qu’André Lefaur avait créé au théâtre dans la pièce de Marcel Pagnol. Lefaur n’avait pas la personnalité de Jouvet, mais c’était un acteur solide, éprouvé, et il avait fortement marqué Topaze. Ce n’est pourtant pas la raison, semble-t-il, qui fit échouer Jouvet. Il abordait pour la première fois ces étranges machines que sont les caméras, devait penser au rayon du projecteur, au bon profil, au placement des micros ; en outre, son metteur en scène, Louis Gasnier, n’avait plus l’autorité qu’il eût fallu et en 1933 on ne séparait pas encore, dans la plupart des cas, le cinéma du théâtre.

TOPAZE – Louis Gasnier (1933) – Louis Jouvet, Marcel Vallée, Simone Héliard

Quoiqu’il en soit, Jouvet ne vit dans ce début au cinéma que le prolongement de son travail au théâtre et l’occasion de jouer un rôle qu’il aurait peut-être aime créer et que sa notoriété lui interdisait alors de reprendre sur une scène après un autre. L’état d’ignorance, ou d’indifférence, qui était le sien en 1933 à l’égard du cinéma peut même faire penser qu’il ne songe pas à cette époque à l’immense popularité dont jouissent les vedettes de cinéma. C’est surtout après Knock qu’il s’en avisa.

KNOCK – Roger Goupillières et Louis Jouvet (1933) – Louis Jouvet, Madeleine Ozeray, Pierre Palau, Robert Le Vigan

Ses idées sur la pièce de Jules Romains et sur le personnage qu’il avait incarné d’innombrables fois déjà depuis dix ans étaient si précises et intransigeantes qu’il n’aurait pu accepter la moindre déviation à ses théories dans un film dont on lui attribuerait immanquablement, à tort ou à raison, la paternité. Knock fut donc signé, pour la mise en scène, par Louis Jouvet et Roger Goupillères. Là encore, le créateur du rôle ne voyant dans le cinéma qu’une forme démultipliée du théâtre et le moyen de toucher un public (de Paris ou d’ailleurs) qui n’avait jamais mis les pieds à la Comédie des Champs-Elysées, théâtre réputé d’avant-garde. Il ne se trompait pas, et dès ce jour, où qu’il passât, il était reconnu et entouré. Aucun acteur, m��me ceux de sa qualité intellectuelle et de son rang n’est insensible à cet hommage de la rue.

LA KERMESSE HEROÎQUE – Jacques Feyder (1935) – Françoise Rosay, André Alerme, Micheline Cheirel, Louis Jouvet

Cette célébrité auprès d’un public qui n’avait certes jamais entendu parler de Giraudoux, de Jules Romains ou de Roger Martin du Gard fut encore accrue, paradoxalement, par un film où il ne tenait qu’un rôle modeste, La Kermesse héroïque. La silhouette qu’il traça de ce chapelain papelard et paillard, buveur et trafiquant d’indulgences plénières reste inoubliable. François Vinneuil dans L’Action Française l’avait justement défini : “Un Tartuffe maigre et gai”. Ce qui demeura capital pour lui, et décida peut-être de toute sa future carrière cinématographique, ce fut la rencontre qu’il fit, ce matin d’août 1935, jour du premier tour de manivelle de La Kermesse héroïque. Il rencontra “le cinéma”. c’est-à-dire Jacques Feyder. Cette fois, il comprit que le studio d’Epinay n’était plus le prolongement du Théâtre de l’Athénée, mais un lieu indépendant, nouveau et où il allait avoir à faire un autre métier. Il ne l’avouait pas encore, bien sûr et il affectait même un certain détachement à l’égard de cet art où pénétrait.

MISTER FLOW – Robert Siodmak (1936) – Louis Jouvet, Edwige Feuillère, Mila Parély, Marguerite de Morlaye, Fernand Gravey

Des deux films qu’il interpréta en 1936, Mister Flow et Les Bas-fonds, celui-ci est de loin le plus important. Mais Mister Flow, qui était tiré d’un roman de Gaston Leroux rajeuni par Henri Jeanson, n’était pas négligeable. L’adaptateur et le metteur en scène, Robert Siodmak, s’étaient efforcés de faire de la “comédie américaine” ; le genre étant. comme l’on sait, d’essence théâtrale, Jouvet s’y trouvait parfaitement à l’aise. Avec Les Bas-fonds, son goût pour le cinéma allait encore s’accroître, car son entente amicale avec Jean Renoir était complète. Sa chance était grande de rencontrer Renoir après Feyder, deux des plus éminents metteurs en scène du cinéma français de l’époque. Dans cette œuvre tirée du roman de Maxime Gorki, Jouvet incarnait un baron de fière allure qui perdait sa fortune au jeu et finissait par échouer chez les clochards. Il apportait à ce milieu d’épaves une dignité, une hauteur devenues dérisoires, mais qui faisaient grand effet sur ces pauvres gens misérables vivant dans une cour sordide parmi la ferraille et les hardes. Il fallait le voir là traînant sa haute silhouette, avec cette “démarche de pingouin” (comme a dit si justement de lui Pierre Brisson) et découvrant un monde. Le rôle était strictement ajusté à son physique, à son parlé, à sa longue silhouette dégingandée et aristocratique ; Il errait dans cet univers nouveau pour lui comme un cosmonaute empêtré dans son scaphandre : cette création reste pour lui l’une des plus marquantes qu’il ait faites à l’écran.

LES BAS-FONDS – Jean Renoir (1936) – Jean Gabin, Louis Jouvet, Suzy Prim, Jany Holt, Robert Le Vigan

L’année suivante, c’est un autre grand seigneur du cinéma qui le dirige dans Salonique, nid d’espions ou Mademoiselle Docteur : G.W. Pabst. Le film racontait l’histoire (copieusement romancée) de cette espionne allemande, Anne-Marie Lesser, qui, au cours de la guerre 14-18 et alors qu’elle était chef du bureau d’espionnage de Spa, avait dit-on dérobé à Paris les plans des premiers tanks. Le film (l’un des moins bons de Pabst) relatait la lutte des services secrets alliés et allemands à Salonique, pendant l’offensive vers les Balkans, et Jouvet tenait le rôle d’un officier des services d’espionnage allemands qui, déguisé en marchand de fruits levantin, recueillait des informations sur les mouvements de troupes alliées. Paradoxalement, Pabst (et le dialoguiste Jacques Natanson) lui avaient distribué un rôle presque muet. Ainsi privé de sa voix et de sa manière de parler inimitables, Jouvet perdait beaucoup de son pouvoir sur le public.

SALONIQUE, NID D’ESPIONS, ou MADEMOISELLE DOCTEUR – Wilhelm Pabst (1937) – Louis Jouvet, Dita Parlo

Dans Carnet de bal, qui suivit, composition encore : celle d’un avocat véreux traqué par la police. C’était l’un des meilleurs sketches du film de Julien Duvivier. Ce rôle, bien qu’il fût court (le film rassemblait les plus grandes vedettes françaises des années 30), fut sans doute l’un des plus typés de Jouvet à I’écran : il y était émouvant, humain, ce que certains lui reprochent parfois de ne pas être. Il est vrai qu’il lui arriva dans certains rôles d’être une mécanique humaine plutôt que vraiment un homme sensible, qu’il lui arriva d’être dépassé par son propre métier. Que l’on ne s’y trompe pas ! C’est parce qu’on lui demandait de jouer les Jouvet.

CARNET DE BAL – Julien Duvivier (1937)

Jacques Prévert et Marcel Carné lui offrirent Drôle de drame, cet évêque anglican qui terrorise le pauvre Michel Simon occupé à nourrir ses mimosas est l’un des personnages les plus mordants de toute l’histoire du cinéma français. Jouvet lui donne une dimension, une puissance irrésistible une virulence qui enchante encore après plus de trente ans les générations de Godard et de Truffaut. Le chapelain de La Kermesse héroïque était monté en grade : il nous revenait évêque. On frémit, d’ailleurs, rétrospectivement, à la pensée de ce qu’eût été Drôle de drame si, autour de Jouvet, l’interprétation avait été, non pas faible, mais simplement un ton au-dessous. Toute l’histoire basculait et l’œuvre était déséquilibrée. Mais Michel Simon, Françoise Rosay, Jean-Louis Barrault soutenaient l’allure. Jouvet ne mettait personne dans sa poche, comme on dit dans le jargon du métier : il avait à qui parier. Ce décalage que l’on observe entre lui et ses partenaires, parfois, a d’ailleurs gâté quelques-uns de ses films. Il domine, il écrase : de là vient que l’on a souvent qualifié son interprétation d’exorbitante – ou de théâtrale, ce qui n’est pourtant pas la même chose.

DRÔLE DE DRAME – Marcel Carné (1937) – Michel Simon, Louis Jouvet, Françoise Rosay, Jean-Louis Barrault, Jean-Pierre Aumont

De ses films suivants, peu de choses à retenir. Sauf pour La Maison du maltais et L’Alibi, où Pierre Chenal l’avait fort bien employé dans un rôle de commissaire divisionnaire de la P.J. Commissaire absolument différent du reste de celui qu’il incarnera dix ans plus tard dans Quai des orfèvres. Dans L’Alibi, il ressemblait plutôt à Porphyre qui joue avec Raskolnikoff – en l’occurrence Eric von Stroheim. Dans La Marseillaise, où il retrouvait Jean Renoir pour la dernière fois, il incarnait Roederer et ne jouait qu’une brève séquence avec Lise Delamare (Marie-Antoinette) et Pierre Renoir (Louis XVI).

L’ALIBI – Pierre Chenal (1937) – Louis Jouvet, Jany Holt, Erich von Stroheim

Au milieu de l’année 1938, nous trouvons Entrée des artistes qui est important dans son activité cinématographique parce que Marc Allégret d’une part, Henri Jeanson d’autre part surent le faire jouer et le faire parler à son meilleur diapason. Ce reportage romancé sur la classe de comédie de la rue du Conservatoire mettait Louis Jouvet dans son vrai personnage de professeur, fonction qu’il assumait au Conservatoire National d’Art Dramatique depuis trois ans. L’œuvre, aujourd’hui encore, a gardé sa fraîcheur et le personnage de Jouvet toute son acuité. Jouvet montrait là une grande finesse, une infaillible connaissance de l’âme humaine. Entrée des artistes, reste l’exemple le plus éclatant sans doute de la collaboration Jeanson-Jouvet qui fut étroite, longue et apporta à chacun d’eux ses meilleurs succès. Il trouva d’ailleurs un autre brillant dialoguiste en la personne de Carlo Rim qui le dirigea dans Education de prince, adaptation d’un roman et d’une pièce de boulevard de Maurice Donnay. Il jouait le rôle d’un clubman à monocle, racé, élégant, désœuvré et vivant d’expédients : avec Elvire Popesco, le numéro d’acteurs était parfaitement au point.

ENTREE DES ARTISTES – Marc Allégret (1938) – Louis Jouvet, Claude Dauphin, Odette Joyeux, Janine Darcey, Bernard Blier

Toujours en cette année 1938, il retrouva G.W. Pabst, mais un Pabst qui n’était plus que l’ombre de lui-même, et ce Drame de Shanghai, tiré d’un roman d’O.P. Gilbert, ne fut guère plus heureux que Salonique, nid d’espions. Le sujet posait le problème de l’unité chinoise que voulait réaliser un jeune étudiant s’efforçant de galvaniser ses frères dans une Chine livrée aux Japonais, aux Occidentaux et aux trafiquants. Dans cette histoire assez confuse, Louis Jouvet était, curieusement, un Russe mystérieux, chef de secte et qui obligeait une chanteuse de cabaret à accomplir des missions dégradantes. Le personnage était faux, artificiel, prêtait à tous les excès de maquillage et de composition mélodramatique. mais son interprète, précisément, sut rester sobre. Quoi qu’il en soit, cette aventure chinoise ne laissa pas un très bon souvenir à Jouvet.

LE DRAME DE SHANGHAÏ – Georg Wilhelm Pabst (1938) – Raymond Rouleau, Louis Jouvet, Christl Mardayn

Il en alla tout autrement avec Hôtel du Nord. Ce n’était plus le Marcel Carné de Drôle de drame qu’il retrouvait, mais plutôt celui de Jenny et de Quai des brumes, celui qui annonçait Le Jour se lève et Les Portes de la nuit, c’est-à-dire le peintre d’un certain populisme parisien. Jouvet était M. Edmond, individu assez sordide, pleutre, lâche, vivant aux crochets d’une prostituée incarnée par l’admirable Arletty. A la fin, M. Edmond, qui n’éprouvait pour lui-même que mépris et dégoût, se faisait tuer volontairement par l’homme qu’il avait dénoncé. Dans ce rôle, Louis Jouvet, dont René Bizet vantait “la magnifique et mélancolique autorité”, fit en effet l’une de ses créations très marquées ; peut-être pour Louis Jouvet ce film resta-t-il aussi son dernier grand souvenir cinématographique d’avant-guerre.

HÔTEL DU NORD – Marcel Carné – Annabella et Louis Jouvet

Trois films en 1939, trois films d’une certaine envergure pourtant, mais trois échecs. La Fin du jour, d’abord, de Julien Duvivier, chronique sur les vieux comédiens de Pont-aux-Dames. On retrouvait là tous ces pauvres vieux acteurs ayant la nostalgie de leur passé et qui rejouaient, avec cinquante ans de retard les Célimène, les Don Juan, les Alceste, les Hippolyte, les Hermione de leur jeunesse. C’était assez atroce, et Jouvet qui se prêtait au jeu du vieux cabot semblait plein de mélancolie.

LA FIN DU JOUR – Julien Duvivier (1939) – Michel Simon, Louis Jouvet, Victor Francen, Madeleine Ozeray, Gabrielle Dorziat

La Charrette fantôme, du même Julien Duvivier qui reprend dans l’histoire de Selma Lagerlöf ce rôle du cocher de la mort où, vingt ans plus tôt, Victor Sjöstrôm s’était illustré. En dépit d’un excellent dialogue d’Alexandre Arnoux, le film ne parvint jamais à s’élever, à s’arracher au réalisme et Jouvet n’y parvint pas davantage. En réalité, Julien Duvivier n’était pas l’homme idéal pour traduire en images la poésie du surnaturel qui marque toute l’œuvre de la grande romancière suédoise.

LA CHARRETTE FANTOME – Julien Duvivier (1939) – Pierre Fresnay, Louis Jouvet, Micheline Francey, Marie Bell

Avec le Volpone de Maurice Tourneur, Jouvet fut plus heureux ; mais là encore il y avait, non pas erreur de distribution, mais de direction : Tourneur était aussi éloigné de l’esprit de Ben Jonson que Duvivier de Selma Lagerlöf. Néanmoins, la saveur du sujet, la solide maîtrise du réalisateur et la qualité de l’interprétation (Jouvet, Harry Baur, Charles Dullin, Fernand Ledoux, etc.) assurèrent au film une qualité, théâtrale certes, mais très estimable. Jouvet menait le jeu autour de ce riche marchand vénitien qui se fait passer pour moribond ; il était tour à tour ironique, méprisant, satanique : ses regards et ses clins d’yeux transperçaient ses partenaires.

VOLPONE – Maurice Tourneur (1941) – Louis Jouvet, Jacqueline Delubac, Harry Baur, Charles Dullin

Peu de choses à retenir des deux films qu’il tourna en 1940. Sérénade, mis en scène par Jean Boyer, racontait un épisode (certainement imaginé de toute pièce) de la vie de Schubert alors que jeune musicien encore inconnu il s’éprend d’une danseuse qui affole – et scandalise – tous les Viennois. Pour finir, la demoiselle abandonnera Franz, Vienne et la danse afin de ne pas entraver la carrière du compositeur… Untel père et fils avait plus d’ambition. Julien Duvivier et son scénariste Charles Spaak avaient voulu, en ce début de Seconde Guerre mondiale, évoquer la vie d’une famille française à travers trois générations, c’est-à-dire trois guerres. Famille décimée en 1870, en 1914 et qui, toujours renaissante, abordait en 1940 d’autres batailles.

UNTEL PERE ET FILS – Julien Duvivier (1940) – Raimu Michèle Morgan, Louis Jouvet , Suzy Prim

Pour les deux films qu’il tourna en 1946, Un Revenant et Copie conforme, il retrouva son dialoguiste préféré Henri Jeanson. Si Un Revenant était une peinture féroce et impitoyable d’une certaine grande bourgeoisie d’affaires lyonnaise, Copie conforme donnait l’occasion à Jouvet de jouer plusieurs rôles, ce qui risque toujours de dégénérer en “festival d’acteur”. Il était tour à tour déménageur, duc, cambrioleur, brave homme, ce qui lui permettait d’être, selon les personnages qu’il incarnait, timide, ironique, tendre ou sarcastique. Jean Dréville, le metteur en scène, et Jeanson avaient joué sur toutes les faces de son talent ; ce sont toujours là des rôles qui séduisent les comédiens et où ils excellent.

COPIE CONFORME – Jean Dréville (1937) – Louis Jouvet, Suzy Delair, Annette Poivre

Louis Jouvet ne manqua pas une aussi belle occasion mais, si l’on admirait la performance, les qualités humaines des personnages ainsi campés étaient forcément sommaires. Il se montrait beaucoup plus incisif dans Un Revenant où il apparaissait comme le vengeur de lui-même, venant régler des comptes avec une famille sordide qui avait failli l’assassiner et avait ruiné son amour de jeunesse. Ce regard et cette voix cynique dont il savait si bien jouer, Christian-Jaque avait su les exploiter avec un brio qui, lorsque l’on revoit aujourd’hui le film, n’a rien perdu de son efficacité.

UN REVENANT – Christian-Jaque (1946) – Louis Jouvet, Gaby Morlay, Ludmila Tcherina, Jean Brochard, François Périer, Louis Seigner

On peut faire la même remarque pour l’un des deux films qu’il interpréta en 1947 : Quai des orfèvres, de Henri-Georges Clouzot. Une activité théâtrale chargée explique sa faible activité cinématographique cette année-là. Quantitativement faible, mais éclatante, car le rôle de cet inspecteur Antoine qu’il joua dans ce drame policier reste comme l’une de ses plus grandes créations à l’écran. A travers lui, et c’était le propos même de Clouzot, le film devenait une peinture vive en couleurs de certains fonctionnaires de police, bourrus, bons bougres, un peu désenchantés, un peu aigris, petits besogneux de la Tour Pointue. A cet anti-Maigret, Jouvet donnait un relief extraordinaire. Dans sa chambre assez misérable, il traînait la savate, sur le terrain des opérations c’était un lion. Certaines scènes d’interrogatoire sont des chefs-d’œuvre de stratégie policière.

QUAI DES ORFEVRES – Henri-Georges Clouzot (1947) – Simone Renant, Bernard Blier, Suzy Delair, Pierre Larquey

Si, dans Copie conforme notamment, il était parvenu à se renouveler grâce à ses personnages multiples – allant même, dans le rôle du petit représentant, jusqu’à “éteindre” sa voix dont le timbre est si caractéristique – c’est au contraire un super Louis Jouvet que nous retrouvions dans Les Amoureux sont seuls au monde et Entre onze heures et minuit, réalisés, dans cette même année 1948, par Henri Decoin.

COPIE CONFORME – Jean Dréville (1947) – Louis Jouvet, Suzy Delair, Jane Marken

Dans Les Amoureux sont seuls au monde, il est un musicien célèbre ; il n’y a pas si loin entre un grand musicien et un grand comédien, et Jouvet, comme il l’avait fait dans Entrée des artistes, projeta sa propre personnalité sur celle de son personnage. Le film avait cette particularité de comporter deux fins : l’une optimiste, par réconciliation ; l’autre pessimiste, par suicide de l’une des héroïnes. A la sortie en public, il y eut d’ailleurs procès entre les producteurs et les auteurs, ces derniers ayant consenti à écrire la version rose à la condition qu’elle ne serait jamais projetée en France. Ce fut naturellement la fin heureuse qui fut projetée le plus souvent ! Comment Henri Jeanson et Henri Decoin eurent-ils la naïveté de croire que cette version rose étant écrite et tournée, les producteurs ne s’en serviraient pas !…

LES AMOUREUX SONT SEULS AU MONDE – Henri Decoin (1948) – Louis Jouvet, Renée Devillers, Dany Robin

Avec Entre onze heures et minuit, Jouvet retrouvait un rôle d’inspecteur de police. Il commençait à sérieusement connaître le métier, ce qui permit à quelques critiques d’écrire cette formule solide, originale et bien frappée : Jouvet est égal à lui-même…

ENTRE ONZE HEURES ET MINUIT – Henri Decoin (1949) – Louis Jouvet, Madeleine Robinson

Le sketch qu’il jouait dans Retour à la vie était de Clouzot. Il n’avait pas donné là le meilleur de lui-même, mais quelques expressions de Jouvet sont toujours devant nos yeux. La confrontation de ce rapatrié, après la Libération, avec un ancien tortionnaire de la Gestapo évadé de prison, avait quelque chose d’atroce : Louis Jouvet parvenait à donner une couleur humaine à son personnage de Français en face non seulement d’un ennemi de son pays mais d’un ennemi de tous les hommes.

RETOUR A LA VIE (Le retour de Jean) – Henri-Georges Clouzot (1949) – Louis Jouvet

C’est encore en acteur qu’il joue le rôle d’un acteur dans Miquette et sa mère. Si l’on ne comprend pas très bien ce qu’Henri-Georges Clouzot allait faire du côté de Flers et Caillavet, on voit en revanche ce qui pouvait amuser Jouvet dans ce rôle de Monchablon, cheval de bataille du théâtre de boulevard d’avant la guerre de 14. Mais la caricature qu’il fit du cabot professionnel était appuyée, lourde, en un mot pas tout à fait digne de lui. Ce n’était pas du bon Clouzot ; ce n’était pas du bon Jouvet.

Le film qui suivit Miquette et sa mère., en cette fin d’année 1949 permit au comédien de retrouver son auteur, Henri Jeanson. Et de le retrouver à cent pour cent puisque Jeanson avait écrit le scénario, le dialogue et assurait la mise en scène de Lady Paname. Jouvet tenait le rôle d’un photographe, anarchiste et bohème, philosophant à l’occasion et qui promenait sa longue silhouette et son teint glabre à travers le quartier Saint-Martin des années 20. Jeanson éprouve une grande tendresse pour ce coin de Paris qui fut le creuset du music-hall et de la chanson ; son film avait avant tout l’ambition de ressusciter ce décor désuet, ces cours intérieures où imprésarios, éditeurs de musique, régisseurs et directeurs de scènes périphériques tenaient leurs assises ; l’ambition surtout de faire revivre ce monde du spectacle d’autrefois où l’on côtoyait quelques futures vedettes et beaucoup de futurs ratés. Jouvet (il s’appelait Bagnolet dans l’histoire) faisait partie de cette faune pittoresque et sa composition était savoureuse. C’était une bonne caricature, plus légère que celle de Monchablon dans Miquette et sa mère..

On aborde enfin ce mois de novembre 1950. Le 21, il commence au studio de Billancourt à tourner Knock. Il n’a plus que huit mois à vivre. Ce rôle qu’il a joué à la scène des centaines et des centaines de fois, qu’il a déjà interprété à l’écran dix-sept ans plus tôt, il le retrouve tout à la fin de sa vie, comme en suprême rendez-vous. Il l’avait repris souvent à la Comédie des Champs-Elysées et à l’Athénée. Quand les affaires battaient de l’aile, il affichait la pièce de Jules Romains. Il a écrit lui-même, dans ses “Témoignages sur le Théâtre” : «J’ai pour Knock une reconnaissance inaltérable. Il réaimante les comédiens, réjouit le public, exorcise les huissiers et met en fuite le spectre de la faillite qui hante particulièrement les édifices dramatiques. Pièce clef, pièce phénix, pièce saint-bernard, pièce providence… Pendant la seule année 1925, Knock par quatre fois est monté à l’assaut et m’a permis de surmonter l’adversité et les défaites d’une saison particulièrement désastreuse … » Et voilà que sa dernière interprétation du docteur Knock, c’est au cinéma qu’il la donne, comme s’il voulait la fixer à tout jamais. Après le film de Guy Lefranc, il n’a plus jamais rejoué la pièce qui le suivit tout au long de sa carrière ; et l’on pense à ce qu’écrivait Marcel Pagnol dans son “Adieu à Raimu”, au lendemain de la mort de César : « Je mesure aujourd’hui toute la reconnaissance que nous devons à la lampe magique qui rallume les génies éteints… »

Dans Une Histoire d’amour, qu’il termine seize jours avant de mourir, il est de nouveau inspecteur de police chargé d’enquêter, non sur un crime, mais sur un double suicide. Scénario, adaptation, dialogue sont de Michel Audiard ; la machine tourne rond et Jouvet est enchanté de son jeune metteur en scène, Guy Lefranc, avec qui s’amorcent de nouveaux projets de collaboration. On a dit et écrit, à la sortie d’Une Histoire d’amour, que Louis Jouvet semblait fatigué, que le masque de la mort était déjà posé sur son visage. Il est facile de dire ces choses quand la mort a passé… Pour nous, il nous apparaît dans ce dernier rôle comme le Jouvet de toujours. Comme le Jouvet de tous les jours. Familier. Féroce. Tendre. Du côté de l’amour et contre l’égoïsme. Il eût aimé cette sortie, simple et naturelle. Partir sur une grande scène tragique n’eût pas été son affaire ; ce qu’il laissera dans le cinéma, qui ne fut pas tout à fait son monde, c’est l’empreinte d’une personnalité exceptionnelle de comédien. Il disait : «Un acteur s’interprète toujours lui-même.» Alors, il fut le parfait interprète de Louis Jouvet. Il peut sembler paradoxal d'entreprendre une publication sur Louis Jouvet au cinéma. Il fut avant tout homme de théâtre, et cet engagement total de son intelligence, de son savoir, de toute sa personne parait exclure de sa part toute approche, même furtive, de cet art cinématographique qui, de son temps, était déjà "une écriture". Pourtant, il a tourné trente-deux films... Mais lorsqu'il apparut pour la première fois au cinéma, il avait 46 ans (Topaze, première version, en 1933), c'est-à-dire à une époque où sa gloire de comédien et d'animateur dramatique était acquise et éclatante.  C'est donc un homme d'une maturité artistique accomplie, d'une notoriété et mondialement reconnue qui va débuter au cinéma, et dans un rôle consacré déjà par le succès, mais qu'il n'a jamais joué. Pourquoi un tel retard ? On est évidemment tenté de répondre qu'avant 1933 le cinéma présentait peu d'attrait pour un comédien aussi profondément enraciné que lui dans le théâtre. Le cinéma muet avait ses stars, étrangères pour la plupart à l'art dramatique, et dans les deux ou trois premières années de son existence le film parlant fit une large place à la comédie musicale, à l'opérette, à ces "movies show" style Broadway melody ou Our dancing daughters (Les Nouvelles vierges) qui déclenchèrent en Europe les Congrès s'amuse et les Chemin du paradis... Que serait donc allé faire dans ces délectables "friandises cinématographiques" le créateur de Siegfried, le continuateur, à la Comédie des Champs-Elysées, du Vieux-Colombier de Copeau ? Pourtant ce n'est peut-être pas par manque d'intérêt pour lui que Louis Jouvet se tint éloigné du cinéma jusqu'à 46 ans : c'est tout simplement parce que jusque-là il n'eut pas le temps de s'y intéresser... Wako WOW 💯 . So happy to share the One Michelin star Wako in San Francisco’s Richmond District is reopened for indoor dining . I’ve been wanting to try Wako for the past year and feel fortunate to get one of their early reservations upon reopening . The former omakase-only spot has retooled their menu post-pandemic and now offers a sushi tasting menu and more robust a la carte options spanning both cooked and cold dishes as well as hand rolls and nigiri . The change allowed us to bring younger companions and to also try more of the menu . While the tasting menu (10 nigiri and a small dish) is notably not referred to as omakase, it is a fantastic set (or foundation) for the meal and a great value for this level of quality . Every item that came out is stellar and for a base menu, it’s clear that the chefs at Wako are choosing the very best for the tasting menu .
