Calicium salicinum
So we recently went on a lichen collecting trip and got some pin lichens! These little teeny-tiny guys are so hard to spot, but we found some growing on dead wood and logs used for building, and were able to gather some bits of wood that had peeled off with age. So I sat down to ID them and after nearly 2 hours, all I knew was that there were at least 2 genera of pin lichens on just one small piece of bark . . . *sigh* I love you lichens, but sometimes you exhaust me. C. salicinum can be identified by its immersed, inapparent thallus, brown pruina on the bottom of the stalked apothecial exciples, and its spores with spiral ornamentation. And I *think* it is one of the species we collected. Further testing needed. It can be found growing on deciduous trees and lignum in the montane belt to subtropics of Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

What is a good diet for the elderly ? What are the ways to make nutrition easier ? | Health Tips
Diet for Healthy Aging
Nutrition for the elderly
The increase in life expectancy in the 20th century brought aging into the spotlight. More old people are alive today than at any time in history. People over the age of sixty may make up a tenth of our population today and a fifth by 2050. Although the increasing life expectancy of people is welcomed, the facilities for their physical well-being are insufficient.
Many factors affect aging for well-being. Some of these, such as genetics, are beyond our control. Others — like exercise, healthy eating, regular doctor visits and taking care of their mental health — are within our reach. We can help them maintain their health, live as independently as possible and maintain quality of life as they age.
Food is also part of the body's fuel and medicine. For seniors with long-term illnesses, good nutrition is even more important. Healthy eating isn't just about calorie counts and food labels. Food is also a time of emotional connection, and good food is one of life's fundamental pleasures -- at any age.
To be less preoccupied with food, it is useful to have an idea of which diets to look for and how to meet them.

Trollskogen, Sweden (No. 2)
Öland has a unique ecology containing many endemic and rare plants not found anywhere else. Trollskogen is characterized by its lichen-covered pine trees; those close to the exposed shore (a shingle beach) have been deformed by the wind. The interior of the forest contains pine trees, up to 200 years old, interspersed with old oaks, a remnant of the former grazing pastures in the Boda forests. Today, cattle still graze here, ensuring the biodiversity of the ecosystem, native grass and herb diversity. The western edge is formed by the grazed and forested areas of the Grankullaviken bay.
The old oaks and pines are a rich habitat for lichens, insects, fungi, and mosses. The rich flora of the reserve includes endangered and rare species such as Pachyphiale carneola, Calicium abietinum, and Sphinctrina. More common plants include burr chervil, Prince's pine, and Baltic wormwood.

Horsetail tea, cola de Caballo, this herb, plant is Rich in silica. The amazing process of our body one of its Marvel's is a organic fusion machine. It converts silica into organic Calcium, We added this beauty to our garden for additional healing and well being.. As we age the absorption of Calcium changes, some people can't digest the pill form of Calcium due to kidneys problem etc but what if through our foods and drinks this would be possible and it is, by giving the body the building blocks to create and transform other minerals and nutrients this is possible. Calcium has many leading roles, it helps with our nervous system, cardiovascular, brain development and the most known bone density. what many people do not know or are unaware of is calcium plays a major role in the electric transmission between our nerves and muscles and brain and cardiovascular system this is one of the main minerals the body uses to maintain it's natural electric charge to transmit other nutrients and well-being throughout the body our bodies are an amazing organic machine able to transform one thing into another for its own well-being it's just amazing I am always at ahh moment when I discovered more new features of this amazing being the part of me, the physicality I called my body. #SantoProducts #calicium #silica #horsetail #coladecaballo (at Santo Products) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5S8rcpnK0o/?igshid=pqvz3708dknl

Calicium abietinum
Fir pin, black stubble
So like, I need to clarify that the fruting bodies of pin lichens aren't *technically* mushrooms, but also what is the technical definition of a mushroom anyway? ("an enlarged complex fleshy fruiting body of a fungus (as most basidiomycetes) that arises from an underground mycelium and consists typically of a stem bearing a spore-bearing structure") So like, go ahead and call them mushrooms if you want, but just know that at some point some pedant might correct and I would have to give it them on a technicality. But in my heart, when I look at C. abientinum I am screaming "look at the bitty lil baby mushrooms!!!!" This pin lichen has an immersed thallus sunken into old and dead wood and bark, particularly that of hardwood and firs. It produces brown-black, thin-stalked apothecia up to a measly 1 mm in height, covered in a transparent gelatinous sheath and topped with a lens- or bell-shaped cap. It has a chlorococcoid green algal photobiont. C. abietinum can be found in dryer, temperate to boreal-montane habitats in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

(Hello!!<3) When you get this you have to answer with 5 things u like about yourself, publicly. then, send this ask to 10 of your favorite followers (positivity is cool, no need to do it if you don't want it💖)
Hmmm, five things I like about myself, you say? Well, I'll take up your challenge, Calicium.
Firstly, I appreciate having a decent short and long-term memory. While not infallible, I can usually pull out routines, facts, and details from it within a few tries. It's helpful for my creative endeavors along with my schooling.
Second one would have to be passion. Get me hooked on something, and I probably will be interacting or talking about it for weeks or months at a time. Whether it be diving into a new fandom or ragging on about a character, it's something that really makes me happy and driven.
Third quality is empathy. I put in a fair amount of effort to understand the people around me. It does come with downsides like being easily hurt from someone else's anger, but it helps me to try to resolve issues and make friends a lot of the time.
Fourth thing I value is loyalty. Friends are hard to come by, but the ones I do have I stick to hard. It takes a lot of punishment or a shift in circumstances for me to bow out of a connection once I make it strong. It does mean that I can cling to bonds that may not be the best for me, but I have been trying to improve on that.
Finally, I would say determination. When I'm on my feet and out the door, I put my shoulder to the wheel and push hard at my tasks. School, work, scripts, if it matters enough, I get it done.
Well then everyone, there's a little bit about me. Thank you for the challenge, Cal.

Tree-dwelling crustaceans, arboreal salamanders, biodiversity in fern mats and epiphyte communities in the canopies of redwood forests:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aneides vagrans - the “wandering salamander” - a species endemic only to Vancouver Island and the redwoods forests of coastal northern California. It can be found living up to 100 meters off the ground in the canopy, where it can spend its entire life residing in epiphytic fern mats and under bark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos via Save the Redwoods League and STEM Humboldt.
Excerpt:
Of 27 redwoods sampled along the coast of Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, California, 13 had fern mats of this species which collectively weighed more than 100 kilograms, while one had fern mats weighing as much as 742 kilograms (Sillett and Bailey 2003). Other ferns that grow as epiphytes on Redwood include the Licorice Fern (Polypodium glycyrrhiza), Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum) and Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina) (Sillett and Van Pelt 2000; Sillett and Bailey 2003). [...]
Sillet and Van Pelt (2000) studied a single old-growth redwood tree in Redwoods National Park and found that its crown had "148 resprouted trunks arising from the main trunk, other trunks, or branches." Five of the resprouted trunks had a basal diameter of over one meter, and the largest resprouted trunk was over 40 meters tall. These researchers concluded that the crown of this redwood could itself be considered a forest. [...] At the Bolinas Lagoon Preserve, 50 kilometers north of San Francisco, over a hundred Great White Egrets (Egretta alba), Snowy Egrets (Egretta thula) and Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) nest high in the tops of the redwood trees of Picher Canyon. [...] Williams & Sillet (2007) sampled the canopies of nine large redwood trees and found a total of 282 plant species growing there, including "183 lichens, 50 bryophytes and 49 vascular plants. [...] The epiphytes growing in redwood canopies produce food and microhabitats for many species of animals, including beatles, crickets, earthworms, millipedes, mollusks, arthropods and amphibians [...].
Redwood trees are so immense that large plants (i.e. other species of trees as well as shrubs) grow on them as epiphytes. The following species of trees and shrubs have been found as epiphytes on Coast Redwood:
Tanbark Oak (Lithocarpus densiflorus) / California Bay (Umbellularia californica) / Cascara (Rhamnus purshiana) / Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) / Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) / Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) / Huckleberry (Vaccinium spp.) / Salal (Gaultheria shallon) / Elderberry (Sambucus callicarpa) Gooseberry (Ribes spp.)
References: Sillett and Van Pelt (2000); Sillett and Baily (2003). One California Bay found in the canopy of an old-growth redwood in Redwood National Park is the highest recorded epiphytic tree in the world, growing out of a knothole in the redwood located 98.3 meters above the ground (Sillett and Van Pelt 2000).

A fern mat in a redwood canopy. Photo by Stephen Sillett.
Excerpt from “Redwood Forest Canopies: Insights from 15 Years of Tree Climbing,” by Stephen C. Sillett, Chair in Redwood Forest Ecology at Humboldt State:
The pace of research on Sequoia sempervirens forests increased dramatically in 1996 with initiation of scientific tree climbing at Humboldt State University. Direct measurements of tree structures and epiphytes have revealed an arboreal ecosystem that was previously under-appreciated, because upper canopies of tall forests are scarcely visible from the ground. As they age, and in response to damage from wind and falling neighbors, redwood trees develop highly individualized crowns consisting of reiterated trunks arising from the main trunk, other trunks, and limbs. Over many years, these woody components of a crown interact, sometimes abrading each other and fusing such that living cambium produces sapwood that bridges regions of the crown hydraulically. Fusions, old limbs, and crotches between reiterated trunks provide ideal platforms for accumulation of epiphytes and debris.
In redwood rain forests of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, the fern Polypodium scouleriforms sprawling mats overlying arboreal soils up to 1 meter deep on these substrates. The set of fern mats in an old crown can exceed 800 kilograms dry mass and hold over 8000 liters of water. Soils beneath ferns and decaying wood inside trunks and limbs store 25 to 53 thousand liters of water per hectare, sustaining desiccation‐sensitive organisms high above the ground throughout the year.
The lungless salamander, Aneides vagrans -- the only amphibian denizen of redwood forest canopies -- resides in cavities within fern mats and decaying wood and feeds on a rich invertebrate community that includes aquatic crustaceans known as harpacticoid copepods.
In addition to P. scouleri, redwood forest canopies are home to at least 265 epiphyte species (186 lichens, 26 mosses, 19 liverworts, 15 angiosperms, 5 ferns, 4 conifers), including a species new to science, the lichen Calicium sequoiae, Williams & Tibell.
