Went to the tide pools at Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego last weekend. Saw a LOT of striped shore crabs, many of whom were nestled in what looked like a cliffside hotel on the rocks. The rock had a bunch of holes and crab-sized caves, making it the perfect little seaside retreat for a crustacean 🦀

This one woulda been cool if it was in focus. But DEAL WITH IT, I'm showing it to you anyway.

Who doesn't love tide pools... Better yet who doesn't love San Diego tide pools during the big big King Tides. During King Tide the tide is usually a negative tide and that means the water is low low. The best time for treasure hunting.

We love visiting the central California coast, we have a few secret spots we have found the best tide pools. We haven't really found anything as exciting in the so cal area, so this was a chance to see if so cal could measure up. And it definitely did not disappoint!

So many treasure's we haven't see before. Beginning with the brittle sea star, or brittle star fish. We saw 3 total with the one pictured above as the biggest one. A true delight was the rainbow star, that little booger was hiding in the grass but you can see the little speckled colors through the grass. Super fun!

Bat stars and abalone shells are always super fun. The pink furry looking thing is a nudibranch (type of sea slug) and that black blob with a shell stuck to is a keyhole limpet.

These tide pools are part of Cabrillo National Monument near Point Loma in San Diego.

This is a find, learn, and leave area as is all state and national parks.

Where In The World Is Phryne Fisher?

We're not the only ones who are trying to find out where Phryne is off to next! Flat! Jack and Flat! Dottie are searching too! Jack called in some favors, and they started out at the Naval Base San Diego, since they saw Phryne had been nearby at Hotel del Coronado. 

She was long gone, of course, so they visited the nearby Old Point Loma Lighthouse for a better overview of San Diego. 

After it went out of its original service, the light house was abandoned and decaying. 

The Army began using it as a radio station during WWI.  Cabrillo National Monument was created in 1913 on the 1/2-acre parcel where the lighthouse sits, and the land transferred to the National Park Service. 

While they were up there, Jack picked up an Astrolabe. Early sailors like Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo (the first European to set foot on the west coast of the US) used an astrolabe by turning the pointer until a star or planet could be seen in a straight line through both pinhole sights. Sailors then calculated latitude by noting the angle of the celestial body above the horizon. It may be a longshot, but he's hoping it will lead him to a particular celestial body, Miss Fisher.

Hopefully Jack and Dot will catch up with Phryne at the Miss Fisher Con 2022 !

San Diego: Point Loma

The hardest part of today’s ride was the initial climb up to the ridge from Ocean Beach. Then it was just a gently rolling ride on Catalina Avenue all the way to the end. A fair portion of the route is through Point Loma Naval facilities and the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, but the gates and the road are open during the day for folks heading out to the lighthouse and the Cabrillo National Monument. I’d forgotten my National Park Pass in the car and thought I’d have to come up with the $10 fee, but the ranger at the booth let me through. On the other hand, it would have been completely worth the $10 this morning if I’d had to pay it.

I considered riding down the hill to the lighthouse at the tip, but we had brunch reservations and I thought I better get pointed back. Maybe next trip. But it left me time to return via Sunset Cliffs and while it wasn’t sunset, it was still beautiful (and not so crowded).
