As Dreadnought drifted up from the embrace of restorative stasis, his hyper-intuitive mind immediately perceived something was… Off.
Firstly, his enhanced biorhythms, so finely calibrated to solar cyclicities that he could track planet's orbital procession to the nanosecond - seemed utterly out of sync with the chamber's illumination cycle. Rather than preprocessing the new Terran day's data overload as he typically did, an uneasy lethargy still clung to his humming catalytic synapses.
Secondly, as the veteran astartes ran a condensed lifepulse through his modification suite to jog the lingering reactivation virages, his tactical displays lit up with… anomalies. Physiometric feedback cascades infiltrating his cogitator stacks from some unknown external vector. Intrusion countermeasures were in place, but being unable to triangulate the invasive source set his soul to slow burning.
This… this was entirely outside established parameters. And for one of the Imperium's most brilliant veteran, having his personal boundaries violated in such way was utterly unacceptable.
As he fought through the last clinging tendrils of false-sleep fog, the final sensory intake to kickstart sent a jolt of pure electroglutamic shock through his entire catalytic physiology, a reflex as potent as it was primal.
Something soft and warm was pressed against him. Something whose lithe, slender contours radiated the faintest whisperings of an electromagnetic aura achingly familiar yet utterly alien at the same time. Before his hyper-rational consciousness could even process the dissonance, that same sensual presence began to…shift.
Stir.
As if in slow-motion, he felt the silken texture moving in languorous serpentine coils around his heavily armored limbs. Who let you into this chamber? During the tortured nanocycle it took to recompile his disparate thought processes, he very nearly missed your next sibilant words.

Something sinuous and searingly warm began undulating tighter around the Dreadnought's immobilized form. Each time the lithe coils shifted closer, his tertiary cortices ignited with phantom paresthesia, as if psychoconductive lightning were tracing arcane sigils up and down his ossified neural clusters.
He gritted his teeth against the maddening sensation while attempting to regain enough body control to break the embrace. He may not have been psychically gifted like psyker… but damn his soul to the warp's most obscene corners if he didn't recognize a psychokinetic trap when his enemy sprang it!

Refracting off that obsidian perfection, the latest of Imperium chromium-steel dawns birthed fiery amber halos that exalted every elegant line and curve, casting dramatic facets of shadow across your corded musculature.
As much as him railed against admitting it, some baser part of his transhuman psyche couldn't help but acknowledge the sheer flawlessness of your synthetic form. Every plane of your, every tantalizing valley was precise to several decimalized fractals of perfection. More a living work of art than merely engineered flesh and bone.
It was only when you leaned closer still, nearness forcing his to hyper-focus on your features, that he realized the danger he was truly in. Whatever genetic mastery had gone into crafting your physique was but a microcosm compared to the sheer otherness lurking behind that dangerous.
"Relax, Ancient one…" Your aura swelled and ebbed like a cosmic heartbeat.
A drift of shadows coalesced across your features, drawing out the deepest folds of obsidian corruption barely constrained beneath that timeless synthetic epidermal expanse. Within the umbra's ephemeral flicker, he thought he caught a glimpse of hooked talons that may or may not have been claws.
Then, in a voice grating with gleefully damned malice, you concluded in a whisper so quiet yet simultaneously deafening that it threatened his:

A new measurement could change our understanding of the Universe When it comes to measuring how fast the Universe is expanding, the result depends on which side of the Universe you start from. An EPFL study has calibrated the best cosmic yardsticks to unprecedented accuracy, shedding new light on the Hubble tension The Universe is expanding – but how fast exactly? The answer appears to depend on whether you estimate the cosmic expansion rate – referred to as the Hubble’s constant, or H0 – based on the echo of the Big Bang (the cosmic microwave background, or CMB) or you measure H0 directly based on today’s stars and galaxies. This problem, known as the Hubble tension, has puzzled astrophysicists and cosmologists around the world. A study carried out by the Stellar Standard Candles and Distances research group, lead by Richard Anderson at EPFL’s Institute of Physics, adds a new piece to the puzzle. Their research, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, achieved the most accurate calibration of Cepheid stars – a type of variable star whose luminosity fluctuates over a defined period – for distance measurements to date based on data collected by the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Gaia mission. This new calibration further amplifies the Hubble tension. The Hubble constant (H0) is named after the astrophysicist who, together with Georges Lemaître, discovered the phenomenon in the late 1920s. It’s measured in kilometers per second per megaparsec (km/s/Mpc), where 1 Mpc is around 3.26 million light years. The best direct measurement of H0 uses a “cosmic distance ladder,” whose first rung is set by the absolute calibration of the brightness of Cepheids, now recalibrated by the EPFL study. In turn, Cepheids calibrate the next rung of the ladder, where supernovae – powerful explosions of stars at the end of their lives – trace the expansion of space itself. This distance ladder, measured by the Supernovae, H0, for the Equation of State of dark energy (SH0ES) team led by Adam Riess, winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, puts H0 at 73.0 ± 1.0 km/s/Mpc. First radiation after the Big Bang H0 can also be determined by interpreting the CMB – which is the ubiquitous microwave radiation left over from the Big Bang more than 13 billion years ago. However, this “early Universe” measurement method has to assume the most detailed physical understanding of how the Universe evolves, rendering it model dependent. The ESA’s Planck satellite has provided the most complete data on the CMB, and according to this method, H0 is 67.4 ± 0.5 km/s/Mpc. The Hubble tension refers to this discrepancy of 5.6 km/s/Mpc, depending on whether the CMB (early Universe) method or the distance ladder (late Universe) method is used. The implication, provided that the measurements performed in both methods are correct, is that there is something wrong in the understanding of the basic physical laws that govern the Universe. Naturally, this major issue underscores how essential it is for astrophysicists’ methods to be reliable. The new EPFL study is so important because it strengthens the first rung of the distance ladder by improving the calibration of Cepheids as distance tracers. Indeed, the new calibration allows us to measure astronomical distances to within ± 0.9%, and this lends strong support to the late Universe measurement. Additionally, the results obtained at EPFL, in collaboration with the SH0ES team, helped to refine the H0 measurement, resulting in improved precision and an increased significance of the Hubble tension. “Our study confirms the 73 km/s/Mpc expansion rate, but more importantly, it also provides the most precise, reliable calibrations of Cepheids as tools to measure distances to date,” says Anderson. “We developed a method that searched for Cepheids belonging to star clusters made up of several hundreds of stars by testing whether stars are moving together through the Milky Way. Thanks to this trick, we could take advantage of the best knowledge of Gaia’s parallax measurements while benefiting from the gain in precision provided by the many cluster member stars. This has allowed us to push the accuracy of Gaia parallaxes to their limit and provides the firmest basis on which the distance ladder can be rested.” Rethinking basic concepts Why does a difference of just a few km/s/Mpc matter, given the vast scale of the Universe? “This discrepancy has a huge significance,” says Anderson. “Suppose you wanted to build a tunnel by digging into two opposite sides of a mountain. If you’ve understood the type of rock correctly and if your calculations are correct, then the two holes you’re digging will meet in the center. But if they don’t, that means you’ve made a mistake – either your calculations are wrong or you’re wrong about the type of rock. That’s what’s going on with the Hubble constant. The more confirmation we get that our calculations are accurate, the more we can conclude that the discrepancy means our understanding of the Universe is mistaken, that the Universe isn’t quite as we thought.” The discrepancy has many other implications. It calls into question the very fundamentals, like the exact nature of dark energy, the time-space continuum, and gravity. “It means we have to rethink the basic concepts that form the foundation of our overall understanding of physics,” says Anderson. His research group’s study makes an important contribution in other areas, too. “Because our measurements are so precise, they give us insight into the geometry of the Milky Way,” says Mauricio Cruz Reyes, a PhD student in Anderson’s research group and lead author of the study. “The highly accurate calibration we developed will let us better determine the Milky Way’s size and shape as a flat-disk galaxy and its distance from other galaxies, for example. Observatory wraps up 12 years of Great Lakes estuary watch

The Muskegon Lake Observatory buoy (www.gvsu.edu/buoy/) just completed 12 years of keeping steadfast watch on Muskegon Lake ­– an urbanized Great Lakes estuary ­– tracking environmental change. Over the years, the high-frequency time-series data acquired by the Observatory – meteorological conditions over the lake surface and water quality indices in the water-column – have enabled us to closely track ongoing ecosystem changes such as thermal stratification, lake mixing, eutrophication, harmful algal blooms and bottom water hypoxia dynamics. Here, on board NOAA­–Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory’s Buoy Tender R5503, Beau Braymer is guiding the safe retrieval of the buoy – after first removing the delicate meteorological tower and submersible sensors – for the 12th time in late November 2022. The buoy and the accompanying cluster of sensors are now cleaned, recalibrated and winterized for possible redeployment in the coming years. In the meantime, over 10 million meteorological and water quality time-series data acquired by the Observatory over the last dozen years is openly accessible to the public at the buoy website listed above.

On word choice or something
I've been reading chapters of my WIP to Beloved, on and off, over the passage of two years. [FTR I got her hooked with "the carrot chapter" in which sexual innuendo is accidentally achieved with vegetables. Hilarity and mortification ensue. Book one, chapter 113 if you must know. She had to hear the rest]
Anyway.
Last month, I was reading her a chapter that contained a small cluster of F-bombs [I think it was about three in one paragraph] and she asked me, "Isn't that a little bit strong for the book?"
And I had to go through all four Googdocs [they slow down after about 300 pages of single-spaced text] and see how many fucks were in each.
Turns out it was the recent lack of f-words that had recalibrated her sensitivities.
It's only now, after months of not realising it, that I figured out the language shift was because my heroes had had kids and they were not externally cussing around their babies.
This, my dear readers, is why I say I skate the knife's edge between genius and moronitude.

In a sci fi where they have computers in their brain or wh/e I think that it would make sense to have some sort of age based restrictions because the way it would have to work is that the system would directly input to clusters of already developed and assigned feature detection (pattern recognition) networks, which are highly individual and develop over the course of a person's lifetime. Assuming scifi hardware isn't limited to current material science engineering standards, the way an installation would have to work would be some kind of thorough calibration process... Maybe with presets that have to be touched up on site and recalibrated every few years or after major life events. Like if a certain stimulus becomes extremely connected to a new trauma then you'd have to reorganize the external inputs to avoid crossing over it or maybe program some kind of exposure based CBT program based on personal preference. But, you know, you'd use an AI system of mapping electrical reactions to correct stimulus integration. The reason I say age limits for sure is that like obviously when you're a baby your brain hasn't even seen some shit before, it would be near impossible to 100% figure out if the stimulus they received was 1:1 with what they were seeing. Also like head size wouldn't be complete yet. Which would make a good YA concept actually if like an AI set to a specific task figured out the best solution to the task was to like Matrix all the humans and all the powerful adults in the society are affected that'd be kinda sick tbh. Like if you have this filter directly hooked up to the way your brain processes stimuli, it wouldn't have to be 'mind control' as in making someone do something directly but just presenting them with a scenario it has been predicted they will have a certain reaction to. Like oh kid telling mom there's an AI controlling her? Let's just filter out that particular bit of noise. What are you doing just standing there honey go do your homework. Which I also think is relevant to adults restricting kids from internet spaces more and more even though they're constantly on screens themselves and also the drastically different levels of access people of different generations have to information today.
