Can I blame Brexit for this? It’s complicated. Supply chain issues are global, the war in Ukraine has exacerbated existing problems, and there was also a Flake shortage this time last year. But if it makes you feel better, go ahead.

Status report, Home Baking dep't.
Okay, we've reached the Stop Eating The Frosting Out Of The Bowl Or It Won't Cover The Whole Cake stage.
Tumblr media
...It's from this recipe over here. The site's presiding genius claims it's the best yellow cake she's had: so we'll find out how it (ahem) stacks up shortly.
ETA: The photography here isn't the best, but I suspect the general gist of how this came out will be plain enough.
Tumblr media
The immediate verdict: the cake is really good. A light crumb; tender; not overly sweet.
A secondary thought: the frosting's a little too much for it. It's not that it's a bad effect or anything... but the cake's relative delicacy gets drowned out by the intensity and sweetness of the chocolate buttercream. Which is kind of a shame.
If I was going to make this again—which seems likely, at some point—I'd pair it with a less assertive frosting. Caramel? Lemon? Something along those lines. Even something simply vanilla-based, assuming whatever else also got involved in the combination was interesting.
(Meanwhille, just as a logistical side note: I didn't have the prescribed two nine-inch pans to bake this in, so I divided the batter among the three eight-and-a-half inch pans I did have. Seems to have worked out perfectly well.)

Hello yes please I'd love a post about possession and mediumship and how they may or may not relate to plurality actually
Sigh...like, I guess, but I have to preface this by saying this is such a huge huge subject so this won't even scratch the surface. Possession and mediumship has been a persistent and global phenomena throughout all of human history, with each belief system having a unique and rich history that each deserve their own examination and exploration. In fact the inspiration for doing the research was seeing two sentiments in the community that kept rubbing me the wrong way being firstly "the reason there's no records of endogenic plurality is because someone might think you're possessed by a demon and perform a violent exorcism on you" and secondly "the DSM and ICD recognise Mediumship and spirit possession as a form of endogenic plurality" which aren't necessarily completely wrong when you look into it, I just think are incredibly incredibly lazy and culturally insensitive gotchas.
Demonic possession is actually a very specific phenomena which different religions have different beliefs and approaches on how to spot and what to do about it, but other forms of communication with, or connection to, non benevolent spirits was widely accepted. Even in Christianity in Europe, which I guess is what we would all immediately think of when we hear 'demonic possession', there is the Cult of Saints that existed for over a millennia. There's actually a few accounts of demonic possession that retrospectively we can say with certainty match the symptoms of DID, but really this is down to the meticulousness of the records being kept, which anyone who's researched witch trials knows can suck ass the majority of the time.
The first documented case of dissociative identity disorder (DID) was in 1584. Though not labeled such at the time, Jeanne Fery recorded her exorcism in detail (with additional details provided in the records of her exorcists), preserving documentation of symptoms that exactly match those that are found in individuals with DID today. She had multiple alters, each with their own name, identity, and identifying features and had alters that would today be described as an ISH, persecutory protectors, and child alters. Her alters were associated with actions that ranged from helping her to heal to self harm and disordered eating, were audible inside her head, and could take control of her body to allow for various actions, conversion features, and changes in knowledge and skills. The alters resulted from childhood physical and possibly sexual abuse. Jeanne Fery was actually called ”the most perfect case” of “dédoublement de la personnalité,” the most perfect case of DID, by Bourneville, the man who reissued a book about her life in 1886 (van der Hart, Lierens, Goodwin, 1996).1
But when it comes to endogenic plurality as being something non pathological, or non benevolent, it's harder to draw the same kind of parallels between endogenic plural experiences that we see and hear about today with something like the Cult of Saints while you can draw several parallels between the Cult of Saints and other practices around the globe. Also interestingly, while there's very little written about endogenic plurality, there's a metric fuck tonne written about spirit possession and mediumship. So can you take that humongous body of research, scratch out "spirit possession" and "mediumship", and write in Endogenic Plurality? Fuck no, and it would be insanely racist to try.
What we can do though, is identity and categorise commonality between them and see what insights we can gather about humanity as a whole.
To that end, these beliefs and experiences can be summed up thusly:
Voluntary Possession - usually involving some kind of trance induction, a specific entity such as a spirit, someone who's died, an angel, or a deity briefly inhabits the body for a limited time for a specific purpose, usually providing some kind of insight or perform an act of healing
Involuntary Possession - these are your demons and your devils, often accompanied by a deluge of physical and psychological symptoms such as convulsions and outbursts of rage
The Ouchies - these are bad spirits that don't possess you so much as they hang around and play mischief with your body, causing ailments and issues that aren't medically explained. Nowadays we call them somataform disorders but we used to call them hysteria as well until like the 80s.
And The Voices of Temptation - these are the devils and demons that whisper in your ear from within, tempting you to perform socially unacceptable behaviours like kissing boys and drinking too much wine.
One outlier of this that I really don't know enough about is the Jinn of Islamic faiths.
Jinn are much more physical than spirits.[31] Due to their subtle bodies, which are composed of fire and air (marijin min nar), they are purported to be able to possess the bodies of humans. Such physical intrusion of the jinn is conceptually different from the whisperings of the devils.[32]: 67  Since jinn are not necessarily evil, they are distinguished from cultural concepts of possession by devils/demons.[33] Since such jinn are said to have free will, they can have their own reasons to possess humans and are not necessarily harmful. There are various reasons given as to why a jinn might seek to possess an individual, such as falling in love with them, taking revenge for hurting them or their relatives, or other undefined reasons.[34][35] At an intended possession, the covenant with the jinn must be renewed.[36] Soothsayers (kāhin pl. kuhhān), would use such possession to gain hidden knowledge. Inspirations from jinn by poets requires neither possession nor obedience to the jinn. Their relationship is rather described as mutual.
And honestly, that sounds really really fascinating, I need to look into that much more cause wow I did not know that.
On the subject of voluntary trance possession, the best candidate for finding signs of Endogenic Plurality, rather than the potential DID of involuntary Possession, there's actually been a lot of research into this. Several attempts have been made by the medical community to pathologise voluntary possession and they've largely failed. Like at the core of it, that's why these are listed in the ICD and DSM, because we tried to explain them medically and couldn't because these practices are rarely detrimental to the practitioner, they don't constitute a disorder. There's also been some choice comments by medical professionals where they essentially blame the belief on the inherent inferiority and suggestibility of the (poc) practitioners mind.
Viewed through a psychophysiological lens there's actually been quite a bit of scientific research into the biological function of trance and possessive states and we do actually see changes in brain area activation and activity, very similar in fact to that of hypnosis. Induction into a trance state often involves the use of rhythmic drum beating, group dancing, or the use of psychotropic herbs, so called ecstatic practices.
Mediums often score highly in certain specific criteria of the Dissociative Experiences Scale but low on others and tend to score better than average on mental health scores. So are they a potential example of Endogenic Plurality? Well Endogenic is more of a self identity label where one defines themselves as being 'more than one' in some way and you find very few accounts of mediums describing themselves in this way. The spirits they channel do not exist within them outside of trance rituals, but rather come from another plane of existence temporarily connecting with our realm through the medium.
However! There may be a parallel to be drawn between the brain activity of a trance state and the auto Hypnotic model of Paul Dell. Not everyone is capable of trance and possession, just as not everyone is capable of plurality or developing DID, but they all might use the same mechanism. The same mechanism that leads to psychosomatic symptoms and the placebo effect, behind Mesmerism and hysteria.
The way that this mechanism manifests might very well be sociocognitive in nature, being used and utilised in different cultures in different but very measurable and real ways. As such I think the most we can really say that these practices and experiences are linked to plurality, and there may very well be some individual and isolated cases of plurality in these practices, but that we shouldn't overwrite and erase what these practices are within their own contexts and definitely shouldn't be using them as rhetorical arguments and gotchas, that's the devil of colonialism on your shoulder talking and you should not be listening to him

Weekend Top Ten #630
Top Ten Chocolates
Well, there’s chocolate. And, there’s chocolate. But! Only Wonka makes your confidence sky-rock-a-let. So put your hand into your pock-a-let, grab yourself some Wonka chocolate!
Ahem.
The problem being, of course, that Wonka Chocolate doesn’t actually exist. Well, okay, there’s something called Wonka Chocolate, but let’s face it, it doesn’t make you fart hummingbirds or whatever. Sadly, proper Wonka Chocolate remains the province of tall tales and masterful musicals that shockingly didn’t even get nominated for a single Oscar, despite having several of the best songs of the year.
Yes, even better than I’m Just Ken.
Where was I?
Oh yes, Easter. A celebration of renewal, of springtime, and of course the inspiration for the classic film The Life of Brian. So in a moment of spiritual solemnity I’m going to focus on the true meaning of the season by writing a list about chocolate.
This is no hifalutin list of blends and flavours; oh no sir. I did consider that, but then I thought that sounded both like a lot of hard work and also a bit pretentious. No, this is just chocolate products that taste really nice. Not cakes or anything though; basically bars. Chocolate bars. And stuff.
And that’s all there is to it. Now let’s all eat like we’re in the Ironic Punishment Division.
Tumblr media
Dark Chocolate Orange: I like dark chocolate, I like orange-flavoured chocolate. There’s also something about the size and heft of the Chocolate Orange slices (segments?) that gives them a bit of gravitas; they’re small enough to have a few, if you feel like it, but also substantial enough to feel like a decent bit of chocolate on their own. Essentially, they tick all the boxes.
Dairy Milk: it’s classic, right? Now, generally speaking, I do prefer dark chocolate; I love those sexy Lindt bars and even a Bourneville. Those aren’t on this list though, but take it as read: they’re great. However, you really have to hand it to the simplicity and verisimilitude of Dairy Milk; it goes with everything. Snapping off a square from a big bar is one thing; but Easter eggs. Is there anything nicer than the shape and consistency of Dairy Milk Easter egg chocolate? I don’t care what comes with the egg, just give me several enormous Cadbury’s ones.
Starbar: going onto actual chocolate bars now, and I do like a bit of something in it. Starbars are great because they are soft but substantial; chewy, crunchy, and really jut have a lot going on. They feel light enough that you don’t get post-choc guilt attacks, but they also have their own bit of weight and substance regardless.
Cadbury’s Caramel: don’t give me any of that “Dairy Milk with Caramel” nonsense. This is its own beast. Dairy Milk chocolate, yes, but with really nice caramel within. Simply the best choc-and-caramel combo; sorry, Galaxy. And does anyone else miss the curiously sexy bunny?
Maltesers: I think I’ve become more and more drawn to the simple elegance of a Malteser as I’ve gotten older. The chocolate may not be Cadbury’s, but it’s sweet and light, and the soft, sugary sensation of dissolving one in your mouth borders on the sublime. I could probably eat a boxful if I allowed myself.
Peanut M&Ms: the connoisseur’s cinema snack of choice. There was a time when my wife and I could not be caught dead without a pack, either at the flicks or just in the car. However, they’re kinda expensive and very sweet and also the kids might have choked on them. But maybe they should make a comeback.
Crunchie: a thick, sturdy block of delightfully sweet honeycomb wrapped in a thin layer of chocolate. One of the most enjoyable chocs to eat due to its combination of subtlety and lightness and also it’s chonky boi energy. Can be soft, can be sharp, always tasty.
Boost: lower down the list than perhaps it really deserves. I really love a Boost, but they are superficially similar to the rather lighter and slightly more flavoursome Starbar. Their comparable heftiness can be what you’re after, and they are tasty. Plus – let’s not forget – they’re slightly rippled with a flat underside.
Reece’s Pieces: I struggled with how to rank these, because the actual Reece’s Pieces – the M&M-style things that Elliot feeds E.T. – aren’t that exciting and have that fake US chocolatey taste. But the other stuff they do – the bars and peanut butter cups and all that jazz – are amazing, probably the best synthesis of peanut butter and chocolate. So taken all together they rock. Despite being American.
Mint Aero: just pipping a Toffee Crisp at the post, because I couldn’t not have mint chocolate. I love mint chocolate, but it is something to be savoured, not an everyday delight. Whilst there are nicer chocolates and better incorporations of a minty flavour, there’s something about the softness and airiness of an Aero that makes it compelling.
Just bubbling under: Viscounts, Rolos, Munchies, and Kit Kats. And, of course, the aforementioned Toffee Crisp. Who’s hungry?

Dearest Chandramukhi,
This letter is being written here because this little corner of Tumblr has seen me at my lowest and then seen me heal. It has also seen me pray and find God. God orchestrated this healing journey and for that They sent you to me. And to think that this day coincided with Janmashtami this year...maybe Their blessings are with us.
It is finally 1 whole year of us being together, but it has been so strange. Everyday I have felt like I have known you for ages. A strange familiarity, a strange sense of belonging together...I had never thought that I would get it...heck, I had lost my faith on love. You brought it back.
We have our differences, we totally do and it is very natural to have these differences. But we need to keep doing what we have been doing for the last one year...understand those differences, keep calm and come midway to find a common path.
Also stop annoying me.
I have never felt at home with someone as much as I feel with you. You are a place of solace for me. I had never been so sure about anyone either. With you, I envision a future....our future. A home that we will build, a creative journey that we will take together...A life that we will live together.
I have always been over cautious about committing big things. And by the end of the first year...absolutely not. But something about you made me very sure. Something about you felt very right.
I love how you understand my spiritual views.
I love how you support me through thick and thin.
I love how your hugs feel like home.
I love how you can calm me down.
I love how you look at me.
I love how you had called me ekam adwitiyam.
I love how I can cry to you.
I love how you had almost melted onto the floor near that water cooler.
I love how you had offered me that strategic bourneville
I love how you had sung me the doraemon theme song when I was sick.
I love the way you love me.
I love you.
I do not belong to you. Neither do you belong to me. But we belong together.

Désiré-Magloire Bourneville and Paul Regnard, from Iconographie photographique de la Salpêtrière (Paris 1875)
The book contains a series of 120 photographs depicting patients (this one diagnosed with epilepsy) from the neuropsychiatric department of la Pitié-Salpêtrière, one of the largest hospitals in 19th-century Paris. It was one of the first medical studies addressing mental health to use photography rather than drawing/painting for illustrations.

⸻  THEO JAMES. HE + HIM / have you ever     heard of I WANT TO BREAK FREE by queen, well,     it describes ADDISON ‘ADE’ BAILEY to a tee! the 35 year old, and MANNY  was spotted browsing     through the stalls at portobello road market last sunday, do you know     them? would you say  HE is  more absent minded or more COMPASSIONATE  instead?     anyway, they remind me of hiding out in coffee shops at 4am, silly mistakes that they’re always running away from, a bookcase full of fantasy books, messy hair and untucked shirts, maybe you’ll bump into     them soon!
time in notting hill ; 10 years.
tw: miscarriage
ABOUT.
Name: Addison Bailey Nicknames: Ade Age: Thirty-five Date of Birth: 10th January 1988 Birthplace: Birmingham, UK (although technically Kenya, Africa) Occupation: Manny Romantic/sexual orientation: Undetermined
tw: miscarriage
Addison “Ade” Bailey was born in the plains of Africa... not because his family lived there but because his mother gave birth two months early while on safari for her 3rd wedding anniversary.
He actually grew up in the little town of Bourneville on the outskirts of Birmingham just around the corner from the Cadbury factory. But sadly his dreams of living his own personal Charlie and the Chocolate Factory story didn’t come true.
His family up and moved to Essex when he was ten for his father’s job.
He’s been in and around the Essex and London area ever since.
He was a pretty popular kid, always making people laugh and smile, but it took him a long time to adjust to life away from his home —- to begin with he hated it and took it out on everyone.
Went into childcare when he left high school, even though his biggest love was photography —- his mother beat him down over that, telling him it was a waste of time.
Within two years he’d made the decision to become a manny and within another two he’d made quite the name for himself. He’d work with rich families in the capital city.
May have had a affair with one of the mothers he was working for in his early twenties, but we don’t really talk about that.
Is a little bit useless when it comes to relationships (he gets distracted easily and usually gets lost in work instead), but did manage to stay with one girl near on two years after his move to Notting Hill, a record for him. He’s not sure if it’ll ever happen again that seriously, but he’s hopeful, he really does want to have a family of his own.
Thought he was almost became a dad when they were together, but sadly it wasn’t meant to be and it was just a scare. Things just didn’t work out after that.
May have got married in Vegas in 2018, but that’s another one of those things we don’t talk about. After a week she did a runner and he hasn’t heard from her since.
Still loves photography and is working on his portfolio constantly, wanting to hold an exhibition one day to showcase his work.
His sleep schedule is weird as hell. You’ll usually find him roaming around Notting Hill at 4am with a coffee.
Owns a sphinx cat named Sampson and a pit-bull named Goliath.
Is a complete dork. He loves all things Harry Potter, Marvel and Disney. He won’t pretend otherwise.
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
- exes; the big ex as well as anyone else he’s dated over the years (I’m open for whatever tbh). - the wife; they do actually need to get divorced at some point lol. they were good friends for a long time before it happened, just got a little silly while on vacation. - clients/ex-clients/work connections; mums, dads, siblings. basically anyone he’s worked for or crossed paths with with since 2008. - kids he babysat; when he was a teen he was always babysitting, maybe one of those kids was your character? - the mum he had an affair with; it just happened, don’t ask him to explain. - the best friend; someone he can tell basically anything to and does, frequently. - friends from notting hill; the gang, the drinking buddies, the ones who are always around no questions asked. - fellow night owls; those he bumps into on his midnight rambles.

It Might be Rock'n'Roll But I Don't Have to Like It
I’ve just received a Quaker newsletter about a weekend we had in the autumn to celebrate/commiserate the end of Woodbrooke Study Centre in Bourneville. This building had been donated by the Cadbury family to the Society of Friends for the purposes of running courses and conferences, and it has a long and fascinating history. Whilst people were sad, the talk was of the inevitability of change and…
