Prince Mallow, Representative of Nimbus Land, in the Cap Kingdom
Prince Mallow's world tour to explore its various cultures as a representative of his homeland takes him to the foggy, gray land of Bonneton in the Cap Kingdom. There, he quickly meets Cappy, the Cap Kingdom's own celebrated representative, and his little sister Tiara. Mallow was fascinated by the Bonneters' dedication to the hat aesthetic and amazed by their incredible fleet of air ships, even the most simple of which made his own royal family's air bus look like a go-kart by comparison. And not even those that Mario and friends used when hosting their international kart racing competitions. (Mallow still hasn't figured out the complicated legal procedures that would let him sign in for any of those on behalf of Nimbus Land.)
Cappy was well aware who Mallow was from the second they saw each other. Apparently, Cappy had been on a grand adventure with Mario and heard a lot about the latter's past ones from him as they traveled together, the fight against the invading Smithy Gang included. Cappy seemed almost amused that Mallow's main experience with Bowser the Koopa King was an alliance against a common enemy, despite the fact that his own experiences with Bowser revolved around him kidnapping Tiara for a wedding scheme.
Mallow mused on how he's seen multiple instances of Bowser making enemies of himself with in various ways, even with nations he otherwise is allies with under different circumstances. He admits that sometimes, he wonders if Bowser will one day act in a way that puts him at odds with his own Nimbus land. Heck, what would that mean for the Bowser statue on display in the palace's hall of celebrated heroes? Cappy and Tiara, on both their parts, were reassuring on the matter and told him not to worry too much on that for now. To take his mind off of it, the siblings took Mallow in one of their air ships on a quick tour of the Fossil Falls in the neighboring Cascade Kingdom, which wasn't an official stop on Mallow's tour due to lacking any kind of established civilization in present day, and Mallow enjoyed seeing all the various dinosaur fossils and even live dinosaurs (from a safe distance, of course).

I’ve heard a lot about Wet-Dry World’s skybox from Mario 64, but can we talk about the one for Bonneton in Odyssey?
For some reason, this one unnerves me slightly more.

Super Mario Odyssey Travelogue - Cap Kingdom
Tumblr media
Home of Tradition, Propriety, and Hats
It is a dark and misty night. A monochrome landscape surrounds you in this eerie, hat-themed kingdom. You can see a large tower topped with a top hat in the distance. It is surrounded by the golden glow of the moon, illuminating it and the rest of the land.
You're not in the Mushroom Kingdom anymore. Welcome to Bonneton, the land of haberdashed dreams, and welcome to the start of a brand new, globe-trotting adventure.
The Cap Kingdom is the perfect introduction to Super Mario Odyssey. Following his initial bout with Bowser, Mario is left stranded in a strange land. No colorful landscapes or cheery atmosphere to be found here. The mood is mysterious, pensive even. The landscape is black and white with only occasional splashes of lights and metallic colors, the golden moon in the background serving as the main point of contrast. When you first arrive, Bonneton is wrecked from Bowser's mischief, and his minions await you in an airship - already, Mario is in danger. But this is still a Super Mario game, and there is still fun to be had. This London-esque land may be gloomy and gray, but it's also completely themed after hats. Hat people, hat lights, hat houses, a hat tower...it's silly and a little weird, a fun complement to the dreary circumstances that keeps things from getting too dark too early on. All of this is backed up by the haunting yet whimsical background music that sets the scene perfectly.
As a tutorial level, the Cap Kingdom follows an effective structure by breaking itself up into distinct segments. We start with an open area with hills, perfect for testing Mario's basic movement and how he reacts to terrain. Mario meets Cappy on the bridge before the town entrance, and then the town proper gives plenty of opportunities to test out Mario's jumping and the Cap Throw to collect coins. There's lots of nooks and crannies to enter, emphasizing the need to explore to find all of the game's secrets, but it leaves it up to the player to see them - they can also just go right to Top-Hat Tower if they wish. And once inside the tower, we get our introduction to the capture mechanic in the form of a frog capture. It's a simple capture, making your lighter and allowing for much higher jumps than normal, but it shows that these captures will change how you move and how you interact with the environment. The climax of the kingdom brings us to the top of the tower, where Bowser's newly hired minions, the Broodals, await, leading to a boss fight against Topper, putting what you've learned about jumping and using Cappy to a simple test. All this occurs while primarily letting the player...well, play the game. There's brief story segments, but with open spaces that give plenty of opportunities to play around with Mario's controls and abilities, players can take things at their own pace so that they can feel ready for the adventure ahead.
Unlike most kingdoms, you need to come back to the Cap Kingdom later on to collect Power Moons and Regional Coins, as those concepts are first introduced in the Cascade Kingdom. Going back is completely optional, but I find myself doing so as soon as I can. The Regional Coins let Mario purchase a spiffy looking suit and top hat, and the actual level design, while simple, is enjoyable to explore, especially when you can capture Winged Goombas and explore the misty abyss for more Power Moons. A fun, familiar element in a sea of new beginnings.
Next up, it's time to start the adventure for real - we're going to the Cascade Kingdom!

You know logically speaking I wouldn’t feel safe around sentient hats with the ability to possess others. But Bonneton was a really nice place to stay for a week! Would recommend visiting to you other magos! :3

Phantom's Finished: Super Mario Odyssey (Replay)
On one random evening, I was chilling in call with @dayofpi as we gushed about Mario. Eventually it lead to me grabbing my Artbook of the game this post is about and adoring all the ideas and missed potential of the game, to the point for a few months I genuinely wondered if I might rank the game lower than I used to.
This thought lingered within me until I decided to finally start an important replaythrough of the game, and here's what I think...
Tumblr media
Upon booting it up, I already felt an endearing familiarity to what a 14 year old Phantom felt in 2017. I wanted to enjoy this game mostly for what it is and not what it wasn't. Super Mario Odyssey is still one of the best 3D platformers of all time that is like a playbox of fun left right and centre.
Sonic: Frontiers is often compared to Breath of the Wild when I couldn't agree less. With the mini platforming and challenges, I would absolutely compare it more to Odyssey in that regard. Before I state what I say, let it be known that I really enjoy Frontiers okay? Okay!
Sonic Frontiers wishes it was Odyssey when it comes to it bitesize challenges, as they almost always serve for strong level design in enclosed or open areas that consistently interconnects. Sonic Frontiers has a lot of mindless points to its bitesize elements of "press/hold button". That's what Odyssey gets right, the constant thrill of platforming within the sandbox level design and the freedom of how different of an order everyone's experience can be. You can play the main story moons, or during that grab side moons, challenges and items.
Gameplay:
Tumblr media
If there is one thing that always pulls me back into this game, it's gameplay. Odyssey is the perfect example for everything working around its base gameplay as a perfect core, that being the hat throw. the hat throw is integral to why moving as Mario in this game is so responsive and fun to master. Dive into the hat for horizontal air movement, use it to collect coins as you continue on your path, capture a vast selections of enemies and objects for a quick yet responsive gameplay change.
Speaking of, I love how the captures have a snappy switch up of gameplay whilst always limiting controls to two buttons for easy pickup for how many different things Mario can utilise. Everything is super responsive and it feels beautiful to experience the loop of this game. Every playthrough feels different due to how you can go for different moons each time, experiment with where I go and even get places I didn't know I could ahead of time! Its my favourite controls platformer in 3D (celeste being my fav 2D platformer controls)
However, I do feel the game sometimes lacks a bit in level design. A lot of the time it's really good! Sub-Sections are very good whereas I feel the Sandbox areas of the Kingdoms are inconsistent. My biggest issue is they often lack a level of cohesion with the rest of the world (New Donk especially is guilty of this) and I wish they covered a wider area a lot of the time as with Mario's moveset it is so quick to get through. I feel the best Kingdoms are ones like the Wooded Kingdom where there's multiple paths, elevation and it stretches a wide variety. New Donk for example does have that elevation but it's so simple to get up there it just kinda exists? I wish there was more interesting areas within New Donk to play around as it isn't as fun on replay.
Then there's the few Kingdoms that SCREAM missed potential with the Cloud Kingdom and the Ruined Kingdom. These two are literally just for a single boss and nothing else in the overworld, which is super disappointing with two really cool aesthetics, especially with Ruined Kingdom's unique artstyle.
Artstyle:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of the trickiest part of the game to talk about. Because I both love it and have qualms with it for a lot of reasons...
Firstly though, this game has an insane variety of styles, setpieces and colours! From Bonnetons Nightmare Before Christmas inspiration to Bowsers Kingdom of Japanese traditional samurai aesthetic, the game constantly throws different visuals upon entering any new world. Odyssey thrives on this idea of different cultures and parts of the world for contrasting artstyles and it really works!
However... I feel this also is where my biggest criticism for the game lies. It's that these artstyles don't push themselves far enough when they could contrast even more! Bonneton for example, it has a fun Halloween vibe but why couldn't they have pushed that with the shapes of the environment being crooked and twisted and maybe have the shadows be sharper and stylised? That's what I mean, the styles still all fit into a mold they don't break out of that I wish the game did a lot more
And here comes the big one: New Donk City! This is where the game really conflicts me with its artstyle, as it tries to contrast in such a way that feels unnatural and uncanny. The realistic humans are extremely unnecessary and the artbook shows many better solutions they had in mind. The colours of this world are also lacking quite strongly which again the art book showed a bright bold bustling city with a lot of nods to the series. It feels they wanted this to be the contextualised version of Mario's origin home which makes sense when you consider all the donkey kong references and the fact Pauline is there!! This is considered the iconic local in the game when for me it feels like the one that could've been filled with beautiful fanservice and nostalgic feel. I don't like using the artbook as criticism but for New Donk City I feel it's kinda necessary due to how they clearly had a vision that wasn't able to happen and its one of this games biggest letdowns.
Other:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a lot I wish to get into that aren't as extensive due to how much I have to say, so it all goes into this last section!
Starting off with music, which is weird to me. There's a lot of really good music in this game! From Cascade Kingdom to the transition into the tech part of the Wooded Kingdom. However there's a lot of music that is just, average? A lot of music that isn't bad but nothing memorable, which isn't something I can say about most Mario Games' OST. There's also a lot of 8-Bit versions of music in this game which I really enjoy! But I do understand opinions that they should've used a better NES sound chip for it as it doesn't feel as perfect as it could be.
Next up is story and animation! Easily my favourite animation in a mario game with so much squash and stretch the recently released Mario Wonder seems to emphasise even more! I love Bowser and Mario's animation, and enemy animations are amazing too. However I feel characters like Peach could've had more stylised animation. The story itself is good! It's practically the perfect conclusion to the Peach being Kidnapped Saga, a full on wedding where Bowser takes it way too far. Obviously I don't like damsel Peach as she's a lot better when she's a participating role. However, in the context of her being a damsel this is her best one as she is actively seen throughout the game whilst standing her ground at the very end. I love how she doesn't reciprocate Bowser or Mario's feelings whilst Mario and Bowser have an amazing dynamic this game.
My favourite element of this games story is how it feels like an amazing conclusion to the traditional Mario story, whilst now we're getting new stories with Wonder, Origami King and even Peach getting her own tale. Mario stories don't need to be huge but it's important it still fits the themes and adds fun characterisation to them, alongside giving all of them amazing designs... speaking of
COSTUMES! Mario gets loads of cosmetics in this game through coins, giving them a purpose whilst having a very fun way to have different looks and fanservice. You can have a top hat fancy look fitting Cap Kingdom or a Samurai costume to befit the Bowser Kingdom. Then there's cool costumes that are just their own idea like skeleton, zombie or even underwear Mario! They range from cool, cute to gender and funny with so much to work with. I love this element of odyssey a lot, its one of my favourite things to do especially after I've beaten the game to run about it fun combinations (I love the Sunshine outfit)
Lastly is the postgame! A really fun fanservice Kingdom with the Mushroom Kingdom, and whilst I still criticise the level design cohesion like before, I still think this is an amazing world with a lot of fun to be had, alongside a really fun final level that brought me to tears with Cappys final like
"Thank you, Mario. For letting me walk a mile on your head."
.
This game is beautiful, I have my qualms but its still my favourite 3D Platformer of all time 💙

@marbarmars asked for it therefore fawful brainrot infection time
mention bc haha you paid 1 millisecond of attention to me now i'm gonna bug you
quick doodle separation featuring post bis fawful design concepts
Tumblr media
design notes before headcannon infodump the left fullbody is reminiscent of his dark appearance but none sleeve and is kinda like his "i'm feeling especially confident today" fit and the right fullbody is self explanatory
additionally his glasses are now a lavender tint bc of residual dark star corruption adding a bit of red into his normal blue color
✶ After the events of BiS, Fawful did die. However, I really like the idea Super Paper Mario implemented, where characters who died, or "game overed," are sent to the Underwhere, and villains whose games end are basically trapped by Jaydes for eternity. Unless they escape of course. If a prisoner does manage to outsmart her and escape, Jaydes will respectfully let them live another life, knowing full well they'll be back eventually for her to punish ;)
✶ Fawful escaped the Underwhere and wound up getting ejected in the Mushroom Kingdom. He couldn't go back to the Beanbean Kingdom since he was a wanted criminal, and he couldn't stay in the Mushroom Kingdom for the same reasons. Therefore, he hopped a Bonneton airship and completely vanished off of the radar before his old enemies could find him again.
✶ He met up with Midbus again in the Sand Kingdom, surprisingly on a Bonneton delivery ship he snuck onto where he worked as a heavy lifter. Midbus left his job to stay with him, still extremely loyal even after he thought he was dead for years.
✶ Fawful ended up opening a repair shop in New Donk City after attempting to work under an engineering corporation, but quickly grew frustrated at how they "restricted his creativity." He still makes the occasional weapon to sell on the black market for emergency cash (and for himself).
✶ Leftover remnants of the Dark Star still live inside of him. It grants him a VERY weakened version of its abilities, but he can still kick ass in a fight with them. His main ability is creating dark lightning, but he can also summon the portals he used in his boss fight in-game. The portals have to be within his eyesight, however (if you've watched Wakfu, it's kinda like how Yugo's portals work). He’s very bad at controlling both powers, though, with the lightning either being only a singular spark or a sudden explosion of electricity, and the portals rarely teleporting him where he wants to go (has almost died multiple times from teleporting off of cliffs accidentally).
✶ Absolutely adores capes. It makes him feel powerful.
✶ Nearsighted as hell. Cannot see anything without his glasses unless it is inches away from his face.
✶ Has a bad overbite. If he closes his mouth fully, his upper row of teeth will stick out. (ik in-game art lines up his teeth n stuff but SHUTUP fawful with overbite is hella cute)
✶ Loud. Shouts constantly. Doesn't give two shits about what people think of him. Very quick temper. Literally vibrates like a chihuahua if he's not doing something. Absolutely feral.
✶ short king ✨✨ (i have no idea what the average size/mario’s in-game height is i’m not making an estimate but he’s definitely shorter than mario)
✶ I am hitting him with the aroace beam actually, as I do with all my favorites.
✶ Appreciates Midbus's company a lot. Sure it was only strictly professional (as professional as an evil villain with a lackey can get) at first, but he's glad that he has at least one friend. (i cannot see this as a potential ship at all like no way in hell). Midbus helps with his anger issues by listening to him scream-vent and acting as a punching bag since Fawful has no physical strength whatsoever.
✶ Toadsworth occasionally visits him once he discovers he's alive again. This is another whole big headcannon that I never shared with anyone where Toadsworth started this whole villain monitoring thing where he documents and keeps a watch over all of the villains the Bros/Peach/Bowser have faced over the years. They're tea besties.
✶ Those are slippers he's wearing. Not even actual shoes, just straight up slippers that you'd wear around the house while you get ready for bed. He is a fashion disaster and shouldn't be allowed to dress himself. He doesn't go outside of his house/shop often anyway.
✶ If he and Dimentio met, Dimentio would probably try to kill him on the spot, especially with the headcannon I have where Dimentio's death made him "lose" all of his magic while Fawful's death granted him magic. (lose is in quotations because it's more like he subconsciously forgot how to use it again, kind of like how Zuko "forgot" to firebend in ATLA season 3)
the cinematic universe of headcannons i've built up about connecting the three mario franchises is insane
