Hocus Pocus 2

Review: *Spoilers start at the end of paragraph 3

Look, I am a witchy girl. I love black cats, and medieval/Victorian fashion, and all things magic. With this I have also fallen in love with witch-themed movies and books. Wicked, Practical Magic, and Harry Potter I all love. But little else signifies the transition into the Halloween season for me quite like Hocus Pocus. Me and my family have been watching this movie every October for, I don’t even know how many years. So, you can imagine that I was very excited, but skeptical, when Disney announced that they would be coming out with a second movie. And all I can say is, I am pleasantly surprised. I’m not sure how bad a movie can even be with the Sanderson Sisters at the helm, and while the first Hocus Pocus is superior, this one was still loads of fun to watch and I have zero regrets. I don’t care about the new teen leads. I had no emotional connection to them, I didn’t care about them, they didn’t matter. They were a means to an end to get this second movie made. But every scene with the Sandersons or Billy, pure childhood nostalgia. To start with the real stars of this movie, lets discuss the witches. I remember vividly just transitioning from wanting to be a princess one day, to wanting to be a witch the next. They’re stories always just end up being much more sympathetic, and they just seem like more fun. Seeing the sisters on the screen, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy just looked like they were having so much fun. The dynamic between the three girls is as amusing and entertaining as it has always been, but they added an extra emotional element by giving us an origin where Winifred was almost taken from her sisters. And the ending where Winnie sees her sisters die, and without a second thought says that she doesn’t care about her powers, she wants her sisters back, it was just beautiful. But it was made even greater when revealed the sisters weren’t returning, she was going to them, and Winnie just had the most content smile on her face. You just can’t not love those witchy sisters. Next: Billy. I always liked Billy a lot. Next to Sarah he was my favorite character. But he just became even more lovable in this film, and even more like Johnny Depp Jack Sparrow/Edward Scissorhands character, so that I fully fell in love with him. I was skirting the edge of that pond before, but now I’m completely submerged and have zero regrets. I don’t know why actors focusing on physicality makes me fall for them, but every jerky movement Billy made just made me fall further and further. I also just loved the way he talked, and his insults to Winifred. Doug Jones was just fantastic in this role. I didn’t care for when the Sandersons appeared and did the musical number in the forest, because that’s meant to bewitch people and there was no one they were trying to bewitch. I was suddenly super afraid they were just gonna Disney Channel-ify the whole thing, but their cover of “One Way or Another” was super fun to watch. Also, I’m a little confused. Winnie plainly stated in the original movie that her book was given to her by Satan himself, so either that witch in the woods was Satan in disguise and Disney thought that Satan is too scary for kids, or the writers just forgot a key part of the canon they had to follow. I’m hoping it’s the former. I also really enjoyed all the callbacks to the original, including the fourth wall break of two guys actually watching a scene from the first Hocus Pocus. We had another black cat (though nonspeaking), Sarah’s song was reprised several times, and we got a random town’s lady in the mothers iconic Madonna costume. There were also mentions of Sarah’s hidden rat tails, talk of the spell that would one day be used on Binx, Mary riding a vacuum again (but this time two roombas), the use of water to trick the witches, the sisters saying “Buh-bye”, and Sarah gleefully shouting “Amok! Amok! Amok!”

Overall, the movie was just a good time. The Sandersons were fabulous as ever, most jokes landed, Billy was amazing, and it was about time that a book shed a tear after all the times they’ve made me cry. Is there going to a third one? The post-credit scene sure made it look like it, but I would be satisfied with this movie concluding the Hocus Pocus story. I was incredibly impressed with the writers’ abilities to not only emulate key characteristics of the witches, but also add more depth to them. If you’re looking for a high-quality feature, this movie isn’t for you. But if you want to have some fun, experience a spin on nostalgia, and get into the season, it’s a really good and quick watch. After all, it’s not meant to be a life-changing thing. It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus.

"No. Uh uh. I’m not going.”

Evie juts out a pout, her red lips trembling. “But Jay! It’s Beast’s old castle! Don’t you want to see it?? Ben swears it’s haunted.”

“And who cares if it is?” Mal shrugs. “That place is creepy on it’s own, it doesn’t need ghosts booing and flying through doors and shit to freak me out. I can’t wait to finally see it up close and personal.”

Mal wraps an arm around Evie as she claps excitedly. “Oh me too! It’s going to be so much fun! And so Halloween-y,” she giggles, leaning into Mal. “Please Jay?”

Jay glares at Evie, his arms crossed defiantly. “Why would I want to go to some old, creepy castle Eves? Didn’t we have enough of those on the island? Shit, yours scared the shit out of me! ‘Specially when your mom was home...” he mutters, chuckling quietly.

But Evie isn’t about to give up. She serves up her biggest pout, this time to her girlfriend, looking up from her spot on Mal’s shoulder. “Mallll....”

Mal just rolls her eyes and pats Evie’s head, stroking her fingers through soft blue curls. “You know you’re going about this the wrong way princess,” she whispers.

Evie perks a brow, watching curiously as Mal turns her attention to Evie’s bed, where Carlos is perched with Dude in his lap, flipping quietly through his chemistry textbook.

“C, what do you think? You feel like checking out Beast’s haunted castle?”

Carlos looks up at Mal, staring blankly for a moment before pursing his lips in thought. Finally, he quirks a tiny smile as he sits fully upright.

“Yeah, that sounds like fun,” he says, nodding happily. He shifts Dude over and off of his lap then, and slides across Evie’s bed to swing his legs over the side. “Are we leaving right now?”

Mal shrugs, tipping her head in Jay’s direction. “We would, if we could get your whiney, scaredy cat boyfriend to agree to come with us.”

Jay’s eyes narrow at Mal and he jabs his finger at her accusingly. But before he can open his mouth, Carlos is standing in front of him. “Jay, you’ll come with us, won’t you?”

He scoffs and looks away. “For what, C? I’ve seen enough scary shit in my day, haven’t you?” 

Jay dares a brief glance back at Carlos. “What if we raid Lonnie’s Halloween cookie stash and watch Hocus Pocus again? Remember how much you loved that talking cat? Binky?”

“Binx.” Carlos heaves a deep sigh, letting his chin droop. “But, we could do that tomorrow. The haunted castle party is only tonight.”

Carlos sniffles softly, and Jay can’t resist watching him now, his face wrought with concern. After a minute, Carlos finally looks up again, just barely letting his eyes peek through his thick lashes.

“Please Jay? It really does sound like fun.”

Jay shakes his head, still determined not to go. But when he starts to protest further, he’s met with glassy brown eyes, brimming with unshed tears. They’re wide and silently pleading with him, and Jay can only sigh in defeat. 

“Fine,” he relents, smiling a little at Carlos and Evie’s chorus of cheers. “But now we’re all watching Hocus Pocus tomorrow. Got it?”

“Deal!” Carlos squeals, popping up on his toes to kiss Jay. “Come one, we can still swipe some of Lon’s cookies before we go!”

Evie giggles when the boys jot out of the room. “Right again Mal, like always. I swear, Carlos’ eyes should be illegal. The things he can get Jay to do with just a look!”

Mal pulls back to look fully at Evie, a wicked smile on her lips. “You think? I’m not so sure about that. I mean, Carlos for sure has pretty eyes, but those aren’t the brown eyes that always make me melt.”

She turns Evie in her arms, grabbing her chin in one hand. “Yep. My Kryptonite is right here.”

Evie scoffs, but leans in to kiss Mal anyway, smirking against her lips. “So cheesy Mals. But...I love it. Do go on.”

Mal chuckles and kisses her again. “Well, start getting ready then, cause this is gonna take a while.”

C-Puff’s list of “I’m not sure if this show was real or a dream” shows I watched as a child

Please note; These are literally NOT the shows I would watch over and over again or have rewatched as an adult or which made heavy impressions on me. These are shows are on the edges of my memories which is why the entire list of them.... looks like this.

They’re not exactly Moomin or Heidi.

Also if you’re wondering why a lot of these are from the 70s and such it’s because my country was poor and would buy cartoons and anime from other countries DECADES after they’d finished airing. (actually we’remore poor now that ever before but now the internet exists so I have access to the same cartoons and anime as everyone else)

1: Taotao

(I like the backgrounds draw to resemble classic Japanese art)

2: Noozles

(I actually really like the character designs)

3: Rascal Raccoon

(I think I saw exactly 2 episodes of this but for some reason I remember them)

4: The Little Flying Bears

(Sonic looking ass)

5: Adventures of Pinocchio

(My mom hated this show because she says it was really loud, annoying, and she found the characters super unlikeable and just mean spirited)

6: Lassie’s Rescue Rangers

(You know how a lot of shows had a small PSA at the end to teach you something or warn you about things? I remember Lassie Rescue Rangers had one specifically about identifying black widows and that not all spiders were venomous.

....

they also had a completely serious, not even trying to be funny at all, PSA at the end of one episode warning you against people with ESP and psychics who can read your mind.

I am NOT joking.)

7:  Willy the Sparrow

(I thought this was a show but apparently it was a movie. I guess it just played a lot on TV)

8: The Bears’ Island

So apparently this show barely exists on the internet AT ALL. I’m wondering if it counts as Lost Media or if some weird pirate cartoon website is hosting the episodes. But GOOD LUCK googling it

9:  The Free Willy Animated Series

(Hey did you know Free Willy had an animated series?)

One of those weird cartoons where I only remember ONE episode but I retain the memory of the intro theme song’s lyrics for the rest of my life for some reason.

btw the Neverending Story ALSO had an animated series but I remember watching maybe one episode and then not bothering with it. Even as a kid I thought it was pretty bad.

10: Conan the Adventurer

I actually remember loving the shit out of this show and I’d watch it a LOT. But it’s one of those shows I really really liked as a kid aged 5 or 6 and when it stopped airing I completely forgot about it for like 20 years.

It has a phoenix as a main character though which is cool. He was my favourite although thinking back as an adult... I think he was kind of the Jar Jar Binx of the show so....

also This show always makes me think of Pirates of Dark Water. I remember Pirates of Dark Water a lot less clearly than the canon show because I Dark Water was just a little too much for 5 year old me and I remember not liking it, but Dark Water has since become better remembered than the Conan cartoon.

I think I didn’t like Dark Water because the weird animal companion which is usually the character I would automatically like the most wasn’t cute and scrappy but was this weird unappealing monkey bird thing. So child me had no character to project onto and so I didn’t like it.

So Sunday night we went to our Last Not So Scary of the year with our friends Sam and Jay.  Of course we went as the Sanderson Sisters, with Jay as our Binx and Sam as our Mary.  Sally called us our favorite witches, Jack Skellington said he was happy to see us for another All Hallow’s Eve, and Jack Sparrow saw me from the parade and invited me up onto his float.  BOYS.  He sailed away before I could get my broom though :C

We didn’t keep track of our compliments, though, because THE BEST THING EVER happened and broke the counter.  We were rocking out to I Put a Spell On You at the end of the Hocus Pocus show, in our fabulous front and center spots, and during the instrumental break, Sarah grabbed Winnie’s arm and pointed right at us!!!  Mary patted her hair and gave Sam the thumbs up, Winnie smirked at Fantasia, and Sarah started hopping around all excited.  YEAH WHEN THE SANDERSON SISTERS THEMSELVES SEE YOU FROM THE STAGE I THINK THAT COUNTS FOR LIKE TEN BILLION COMPLIMENTS THAT WAS THE BEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE.

also we went to Universal the next day and Beetlejuice called me a nerd it was great

What is each OC's greatest fear? Greatest desire? Favorite family member?

🍃 Rat Gaze: My greatest fear is losing my family. I care deeply for my tribe, don’t get me wrong; but I care for my family and I don’t know what I would do if I lost them. All I desire is for them to continue growing up happy - my kits. And since you’ve already asked my whom my favorite is, I suppose below Aster Petal is Elk Heart. A parent isn’t supposed to choose favorites but… when she took up her assessment, I knew that she would be my favorite….

🍃 Sun Leaf: Greatest fear? No way, what do I have to be afraid of? Any predator around here is just avoid or chase off, and any thing else is just the same. Danger’s avoidable usually… I can find a way out of it! I myself think since I was already even trained by Rat Gaze, I could be Runner one day. I like Young Bird and Night Screech equally - in that generally they dont seem to care for me for whatever reason. Jealous I bet, not to say we hate each other but I guess siblings are as far as our bonds go.

🍃 Night Screech: … I don’t … I don’t know what my biggest fear is…. I never really thought about it. I mean, the wolf attacks, bear attacks that happened a few moons ago… those were kind of scary but I don’t think thats my biggest fear…Or a greatest desire. I’m pretty… content right now. … I guess Sparrow’s my favorite family member. He’s my nephew and he’s too young to have done anything wrong so… He’s not annoying yet.

🎼 Hunting Bear: My greatest fear…? Everything and nothing. My older brother Cliff Rock once said that the strongest and smartest thing a cat who heads the Talon Guard can do is fear everything and nothing. Prepare for the worse. He was my favorite family member… and it was a sad day when he passed. My only desire is to live up to the potential he believed he had for me.

🎼 Hawk Flight: Hm… I don’t have a greatest fear I suppose. I mean, I think everyone fears the worst will befall their kits and kin, but I suppose since that’s so normal a fear… My only desire is for my kits to find happiness. And I don’t really have a favorite family member - that’s not very fair.

🎼 Alder Leaf: Oh, that’s kind of hard. I’m actually afraid of drowning… I had a pretty bad scare when I was a lot smaller and there was this weird pond on the territory that shows up during certain times of the seasons… I really dont want that to happen again. But! Spider Berry’s my favorite! She’s great! And I wanna be a great Prey-Hunter like Hawk Flight and Otter Chase!

🌊 Softpetal Frost: I believe my biggest fear is being useless to the tribe… I don’t want anyone to think I don’t have a good place here. It’s my only desire as well really… find my place happily. Right now my only living relatives are Sun Stone and her kits…. Which is fine I suppose; her kits are young yet, and since Lion Hearts passing I believe we are working on our relationship.

🐚 Dawnheart: My biggest fear is disappointing my clan. I’m trying to learn what I can from Crowstar, but he seems to make some members of the clans uneasy and … I don’t want to do that… So I guess that’s my desire and fear? … I really like all of my family, so I think I’ll leave that one alone.

🐚 Pigeonpaw: Lilypaw’s my favorite! She’s brave, and smart! I mean, I like my other siblings I guess, but Lilypaw gets me the most! … I think I’m just afraid of those coyotes. Mom says they’re gone now, but…. well…. it was pretty bad. I’m going to be a strong warrior like my dad was to help keep the clan safe if it ever happens again!

🗻Harrierflight: I’ve seen enough to know that my biggest fear lies in the balance of my clans safety. I only desire to make sure we don’t have to face so many losses again… And I don’t have a favorite kit; and I’d never say a kit or mate are more important the one another…

🗻 Willowface: What, the rogue thing wasn’t bad enough for you? Can there be a greater fear dealing with all of that? My desire is just staying alive, it’s been a weird season…. And I have too many siblings to pick a favorite, that would be pretty wrong.

🌌 Binx: We don’t need more bad things happening around here, so why don’t you take that stupid question elsewhere? The Moon Court doesn’t have fear. And my desires are already met. I’m alive, my kits are alive - all of them - and I have my mate. That’s all that matters.

🌌 Canary: I just dont want my kits to die or stay in danger… They’re special here, no ones going to kill them here so I’m okay with that. I wish Pine were here though… But at least I have Snickers.
