1/23/24.
Skids (Fife, Scotland...just north of Edinburgh) were one of the early UK punk/post-punk/new wave bands. "Songs from a Haunted Ballroom" is a recent release, but Last Night From Glasgow has reissued the debut LP "Scared to Dance". Go to the end to hear two songs off the debut, "Into the Valley" and "The Saints Are Coming".
The rest of this album is a nod to the bands that influenced them - Sex Pistols, Magazine, The Stooges and The Clash. I would throw in The Damned as well. One of the members was Stuart Adamson who went onto greater fame as a member of Big Country.
Last Night From Glasgow continues to run the perfect label for someone like me. One foot is firmly planted in the past while the other is in the here and now - still releasing great Scottish bands new and old.

SUNDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Frontiers of Love” (live)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxQiamHKnPQ -- This song imagines walking through the night-time across a dark, windy landscape, drawn by the promise of a warmly lit window glimmering on the horizon. The music emerged from when I was in a Celtic/Irish/Scottish music phase, and it blooms from a holy heart-place. It has been a staple of my live set for many years. I made a "full band" demo of it, then it found new life solo-acoustic, played on a detuned 12-string in an open C tuning. A couple people have detected a Yes influence in this, which I won’t deny, but (truth being specific) it was largely inspired by "A Sort of Homecoming” by U2.

(CW: Religion Talk)
Miss Thunder: Well, the Wheel of the Year spins around again to my favorite season: Fall with the Autumn Equinox! The crisp air, the leaves changing color, and all the seasonal scents and flavors, I love it!
Although I'm gonna share a playlist of some seasonal-inspired music as I always do, I want to take a moment to share some thoughts about where I am in a spiritual sense.
You see, I've been posting these playlists for a while now during the Solstices and Equinoxes. I suppose it was only a matter of time but Cassie asked me recently, "Are you a pagan, Penny?"
And I think my answer is "I think so? Maybe?"
Not that I blame her for asking. All these posts and my extensive New Age/Metaphysical book and music collection would make anyone curious.
I've been raised Christian (Anglican specifically) more-or-less my whole life but my family has never been super religious. We usually only went to church for holidays like Christmas or Easter or for special events like weddings and baptisms.
However, as you know, my family is in a rather peculiar spot when it comes to spiritual matters. Being the physical Avatar of an ancient goddess makes going to church feel rather...off. My Nan confided in me that she also felt that way when she was Miss Thunder and has also slowly drifted away from Christianity over the years, especially as she's been gathering more and more research about the Goddess.
Not that I'm gonna start burning down churches or anything rash like that but...I don't know. It's not like I don't appreciate attending mass while growing up. Even now, if I feel genuinely fearful or frightened, I'll still say the Lord's Prayer to meself to settle my nerves from time to time. But lately, perhaps as I become more attuned to my powers, I honestly feel more spiritually connected, if you will, away from the church and out in the wilderness.
Now that I think of it, even before I received my powers, I've felt more of a connection to the ancient pagan sites of England. I still remember vividly my parents and I went on holiday to Stonehenge when I was in secondary school. I swear, I could've stayed in that circle forever. I just felt so at peace with myself amongst those giant stones, imagining the old Druid rites that must've taken place there. Perhaps even old Merlin himself stood there, gathering strange and mystical powers on a cool Autumn Equinox night.
As I read more and more about Neopagan traditions, (like Wicca, Witchcraft, Shamanism, etc.) there's just something more, I hesitate to use the word "pure" because of negative connotations but something more authentic, I suppose, about these faiths. To me, at least. There's no dogma to obey other than "Don't be an arse", there's no book that somebody with a chip on their shoulder can rewrite for their own agenda. There's just you and the Other, be it a goddess, god, spirit, Fair Folk, Alien, or whatever feels best for you.
And if I'm being honest, I've never felt more alive and spiritually centered than when I'm in the Goddess' domain, be it amongst the old trees at Hamilton Park or on the beach, listening to the waves pound on the shore.
Well, that's enough of my rambling. I apologize for making you read all that but it's been on my mind for a while now and I just felt like I had to get it off my chest. As promised, here are some autumn-inspired tunes for you to enjoy! Curl up with some warm cider and Blessed Be!

William Stuart Adamson (11 April 1958 – 16 December 2001) was a Scottish rock guitarist and singer. Adamson began his career in the late 1970s as a founding member and performer with the punk rock band Skids. After leaving Skids in 1981, he formed Big Country and was the band's lead singer and guitarist. The group's commercial heyday was in the 1980s. In the 1990s, he was a member of the alternative country band The Raphaels. In the late 1970s the British music journalist John Peel referred to his musical virtuosity as a guitarist as "a new Jimi Hendrix".[1]
Adamson found international fame with Big Country, a band formed with friend and fellow guitarist Bruce Watson, then employed as a submarine cleaner at Rosyth naval base, and a rhythm section of studio musicians Mark Brzezicki and Tony Butler, found with the help of his label.
Big Country's first hit, 1983's "Fields of Fire", reached the UK's Top 10, and was rapidly followed by the album The Crossing. The album was a big hit in North America (Canada number 4,[7] United States number 18) powered by the single "In a Big Country", which was performed on Saturday Night Live and the Grammy Awards. The video for "In a Big Country" received frequent airplay on MTV and featured the band riding all terrain vehicles in the countryside. Their second album Steeltown appeared in October 1984. The band's third album The Seer (1986) featured Kate Bush on the title track. The first two albums were produced by Steve Lillywhite. The band continued to record studio albums and tour until 2000. Adamson supplied much of the distinctive guitar work, as well as being the lead singer and main songwriter (both music and lyrics). The band's lineup rarely underwent changes, the exception being the departure of drummer Mark Brzezicki who left in the summer of 1989 and was replaced by Pat Ahern. Brzezicki re-joined the band in 1993.

I thought I was going to have to fight to be anywhere near the front of the stage last night but I ended up being third in the queue and even managed to switch sides in between acts to see both bassists, I almost cried 😭😍

SONG OF THE WEEK: “Green On Red/Frontiers Of Love” (acoustic version)* https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/prelude-green-on-red-frontiers-of-love  —Imagine walking through a night-time snowstorm across a dark, windy landscape, drawn by the promise of a warm glimmer on the horizon in a safe sheltering place. This song emerged while I was in a Celtic/Irish/Scottish music phase. I made a "full band" demo of it, then it found new life solo-acoustic, played on a 12-string detuned to open C tuning. It’s been a staple of my concert set for years, with an added mash-up of “The Whole of The Moon” (Waterboys). A couple people have detected a Yes influence in this, which I won’t deny (didn’t Jon Anderson write “Roundabout” by a Scottish lake?). However, (truth being exact), I was largely inspired from the music by the Scottish band Big Country and the U2 song "A Sort of Homecoming.”
