Beverly Lewis’ The Shunning Series “Overview” Review
The Shunning (2011)
The Confession (2013)
The Reckoning (2015)
The basis of the series is that Katie Lapp, a young Amish woman set to marry one of the town’s Bishops, is having a hard time getting over the loss of her former love, Daniel Fisher who drowned in a river a few years back. She’s also struggling with her urges to play guitar and sing songs not in the official Amish hymn book. There is also an “English” woman snooping around town asking questions, which raises some of Katie’s own. To spoil what we already know from the title, all of this leads to Katie being shunned for her lost ways and thus spiraling the story into a 3 part series.
These films are based on Beverly Lewis’ book series, where there may or may not be more books included, but as far as I know only 3 movies were made.
I had previously watched the first 2 movies a few years back, but never got around to watching the third, so I figured I’d watch the whole series all the way through, you know just a quick binge watch cause I wanted to watch the first one again. I never read the books (Inspirational Romance Fiction isn’t really my thing,) but the first movie had enough intrigue behind it to pique something in me. Hallmark, Lifetime, all of the tv movie channels, know how to talk up a dramatic headline. It’s like clickbait, but with less bait and switch and more predictability.
So overall I felt like this could have all just been made into one extra long movie, or 2 at most, if edited right. It was just so drawn out, that to me the entire second movie could have just been divvied up and split between the first and the third. The Shunning (the 1st movie) was the best out of all 3 films, probably because it felt the most like “theater” movie as opposed to a made for TV one. All of that could have just been the “hype” around it, however I think it was also the only film that looked less like in was made in front of a green screen. The water backgrounds, although pretty, just looked so fake against their bodies. There was a lot of little things that separated the films from one another.
It was probably the casting that failed the second and third movies the most for me though. Between all 3 films there was such inconsistency within the casting and that made some of the continuity suffer. Like come on you can’t give us a brunette in one film and then make him blonde in another, call them the same character and think we won’t be at least a little annoyed. I can kinda forgive switching out Danielle Panabaker for Katie Leclerc as Katie Lapp simply because she was there for two of the three films, but the switch up on the other main characters, among other “important” cast members felt ridiculous to me. Between the second and the third film, the second wins that battle easily. I guess you could say that it had more spice to it and by the final film you knew what was going to happen if you hadn’t already figured it out yet.
Most people don’t expect much from these kinds of movies, so I’m probably judging it by its flaws that are simply common shortcomings from Hallmark in general. I can’t help going in on it a little bit, but you know what, I’m the type to get sucked in, even when these movies aren’t that good and I’m not the only one. I think people love them so much because you truly do get so much binge out of them. That’s why something like 40+ Hallmark Christmas movies were churned out last year. There is an audience for it and it’s not just the Christian Moms looking for wholesome content to cry to, we’re all looking for easy watches these days. Me personally I just like how extra these things are.

Vintage Gold Dollar flyer from October 2000
The month started off with a tribute to Cobb’s Corner, a famous jazz club whose owner, Henry Normile, was slain (along with Guy Willetts) outside the Soup Kitchen Saloon in Detroit back in 1979. There are a number of local sites discussing the strange circumstances of the murder and the overall attempt to avoid any investigation.

https://www.detroityes.com/mb/showthread.php?15350-Vintage-Bars-Cass-Corridor-Area-and-More&p=360800#post360800
I was put to task on Reddit to explain my posting of it (back when I cultivated a long-withstanding 4-year Reddit account) further on /r/UnresolvedMysteries (some links defunct since I posted them last)-so, not one to let my efforts be lost, here it is:
A lot of it can be revealed by reading "Eighth Times the Charm" by Theodore P. Panaretos, and there are a lot of articles on Newspapers.com I'm not going to pay for-anyone who has access to either can be of big help in this.
The real focus should probably be on the killing of Henry Normile, which folks from the area still ask about.
Normile was a former seminary student, served in the US Air Force, had a masters in Physiology (some say Psychology, as well), and gave up teaching at WCCC and the Carnegie Institute in Troy to acquire Cobb's Corner on Cass Ave. and Willis. No stranger to bars and nightlife, Normile revitalized a troubled area by supporting a great portion of Jazz and other music in the Detroit area. He was described as an extrovert, amiable, unmaterialistic, charismatic with the ladies, intelligent, a gun-owner, and happened to be a small-time drug dealer. Mostly dealing in marijuana, he also dealt cocaine, but said he wanted to get away from the heavy people he was dealing with (shades of what my slain friend, Quincy, was hoping to do, but he would never touch coke by a long-shot.). Many penniless folks were getting drugs from him, which suggested Normile was quite permissive and not making the profit he "should".
Prior to all this, he was a manger at Verne's Bierstube on Forest Ave. for five years, but his boss worried about the dealings he was involved in (in fact, many clientele left that place to hang out at Cobb's). Cobb's was big deal for many folks in that area (the Cass Corridor was a mecca for independent culture for a long time, along with many artist groups and the publication of the Fifth Estate). Normile also was a fund-raiser (scrupulously or successfully remains to be questioned) for the MOT and the Detroit Children's Alternative School. This link gives the best bio http://www.corridortribe.com/obits/henry_normile.htm.
On January 27th 1979, 34 yo. Henry (preparing for a recording session there-this session on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txfKHO0D6dI&index=4&list=LLrOTfbop3iS9vT4raLNa5Fg was recorded the day before his murder and may have him introducing the Lyman Woodard Organization performing) supposedly heard a knock at the door at 8p., and a shotgun blast through the mail chute got him in the throat. Marcie Major who lived nearby, came and found him on the floor with his dog standing over him. Whoever shot him was stealthful and unseen, suggesting something professional.
Two police involved were Sgt. Cameron Knowles (not the NZ footballer)-who claimed there were no leads or motives-and Gilbert Hill who helped in the Atlanta Child killings case. Gilbert was later promoted to Homicide inspector in 1982 and appeared in the movie Beverly Hills Cop as Axel Foley's (Eddie Murphy's) boss. Gilbert has always had some rumors leveled upon him that his reputation was dirty, and recently with the issues with "White Boy" Rick making Detroit news still, Hill's handlings of the supposed frame-up of Charles Lewis and false confession of Eddie Joe Lloyd still brings his integrity into question as this independent article suggests http://voiceofdetroit.net/2016/12/23/dirty-dealings-gil-hills-role-in-white-boy-rick-case-charles-lewis-and-eddie-joe-lloyd-frame-ups/.
These links to a Tribes of the Corridor discussion have people still speculating. http://tribesofdetroit.com/discus/messages/19/337.html and http://www.corridortribe.com/discus/messages/19/46.html?1262107475. The first link has an adamant Kris Peterson (who comments on Youtube about this) claiming she confronted a cop/security guard working at a Bloomfield Hills drugstore about Normile's killing, but odder still, was the cab driver claiming he picked up a drunk cop who talked about Cobb's and how Normile was killed professionally by a joint effort of cops and the underworld.
Normile's brother, Howard, reluctantly took over the bar but it became a shaky establishment and less concerned with music. It eventually became a gallery.
On February 1st 1979 (five days after Normile's death), Grosse Pointe promoter Stanley Guy Willetts was shot in his car outside of the Soup Kitchen Saloon. The book I mentioned above will detail things better, but this is where I get headachey....
The following link to a 3-page PDF is very important as it brings a lot of persons into question. http://www.crimeindetroit.com/documents/041483%20Figure%20in%20'Hit'%20Murder%20Tied%20to%20Death%20of.pdf. According to it, a man named Milton Hunt (convicted along with his brother for a murder of a man in front of the Bon Ton Bar on December 23 1978) claimed that a Harold Jackson Jr. (former owner of Berman's Chop House and a supposed friend and regular cocaine customer of Normile's)-who was responsible for attempting to securing loans (ranging from 38 to 40k each) for both slain Normile and Willetts-and former Willetts employee Charles McLellan (who drove Willetts to the Soup Kitchen that day, and was later questioned by cops after the murder but let go.) had approached Milton on August of 1978 and asked him to perform the murder on both Normie and Willetts. Hunt rejected the offer wanting money in advance. He told all this to officers in exchange for an attempt to clear his brother's name in the 12/23/78 killing, but Gil Hill claimed no such interview took place and that no statements were recorded of such things.
Lonnie Thomas was revealed to be the killer of Willetts by Jackson who testified (as key witness in the Willetts murder trial) that he hired Lonnie to do the job. Jackson's story to police and at the trial was that Willetts' business partners (from a failed venture called OTAC which offered expensive cruises to the Middle East)-supposedly hoping to cash in on an insurance policy put out on him-promised him $100,000 if he would get someone to kill the Grosse Pointe filmmaker and business promoter. He is also a link to Normile but was never questioned by police in the murder of him at the time. Police arrested three of Willetts' OTAC associates but released one without charges. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office dropped charges against another, Mat Alfei, for lack of evidence, and a Detroit Recorder's Court jury acquitted the third man, John Kiley. Jackson claims Kiley pad him $5000.
From what snippets I see in the book and the Newspaper.com articles there were a few attempts on Willetts' life that involved wine with pills https://books.google.com/books?id=rWMcpjlQu3MC&pg=PA155&lpg=PA155&dq=willetts+pills+wine&source=bl&ots=dvssIADrWc&sig=aHMcMZZze5hnCMg0fG7Uw1PbQgI&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjSotvRyOLTAhUK3YMKHbF_DbsQ6AEIIzAA#v=onepage&q=willetts%20pills%20wine&f=false.
Though possibly not connected, Jazz bandleader and vocalist, Eddie Jefferson (seeing as Detroit has a Jefferson Ave.-do not attempt to Google), was shot outside Baker's Keyboard lounge at 1:35a. May 8th that same year Normile and Willetts were shot. A  green Lincoln Continental was seen and a disgruntled male dancer was arrested and later acquitted. All three deaths severely hurt the thriving jazz club scene in Detroit.
Seems a lot of persons would profit from these deaths. Those wishing to "clear out" a scene impeding gentrification. Those partners wanting insurance or hampering loans (or taking orders from higher entities and promised not to get charged by the Feds). Those wishing to kill Normile for permissive unprofitable drug-dealing. The police playing along with haphazard investigations.---all speculations.
Maybe those reading the books and articles and with less of a headache to go on, can provide more information or insight.
TO RESUME WITH THIS TUMBLR POST: It’s interesting how Marcus Belgrave is mentioned (someone along with his son who played with a very talented drummer from a band I was in back when we both attended the Institute of Music and Dnace-RIP), as well as John Sinclair (someone I met).
Since this posting, Cobb’s Corner has been reopened (2018) https://www.metrotimes.com/table-and-bar/archives/2018/11/29/cobbs-corner-bar-has-officially-reopened, and someone had a discussion link on DetroitYes on it a year ago: https://www.detroityes.com/mb/showthread.php?24769-Eighth-Time-s-the-Charm
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, anyway, yes, the Gold Dollar Flyer above (this was a post about the Gold Dollar flyer, until vintage Detroit crime took the spotlight)-I’m sure one only has to briefly glance to notice the one renowned band name to jump out at you: THE WHITE STRIPES!....other honorably mentioned acts include Twitch, Bantam Rooster, and glam rock band The Trash Brats.

406. Stalking
Tumblr media
I’m always fascinated about how a stalker works — what drives them to never forget a person. To think about them every day, all day. The money spent on following the person around, the postage spent.
Tumblr media
One of the most infamous celebrity stalkers of the 1980s and 1990s was Margaret Ray, who stalked David Letterman. Ray, who was schizophrenic, constantly broke into Letterman’s home in Connecticut, often sleeping on the tennis court. In 1988, she convinced housepainters that she was his housekeeper and she drove off with his Porsche—when she was arrested on the New Jersey side of the  Lincoln Tunnel, she told cops she was David Letterman’s wife and her child (who was in the car with her) was the son she had with Letterman.
Tumblr media
In October of 1998, Ray committed suicide by kneeling in front of a train. Before her death, she turned her obsessions to astronaut Story Musgrave. 1 Letterman didn’t escape his stalkers however, in 2005 a former painter at his ranch in Montana plotted to take Letterman’s son, Harry for ransom. 2
Tumblr media
The young actress Rebecca Schaffer was murdered by a deranged fan while her career was on the rise. Robert Jean Bardo tried to come on the set of her short lived sitcom My Sister Sam several times (including bringing a knife one time), but was turned away each time. Bardo’s decision to kill Schaffer came when he saw her in the movie Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills in which there was a scene in which she was in bed with a character. 3 He accessed Schaffer’s address through a personal detective who attained the address through DMV records. 4. On July 18, 1989 he arrived at her doorstep. He spoke with her briefly, she signed an autograph, and told him to leave. Bardo arrived back at the apartment shortly after.  Schaffer opened the door thinking it was the script to Godfather III in which she was going to audition for later that day. Bardo shot her in the chest, killing her almost immediately.
Tumblr media
One of the earliest cases of internet stalking came in 1994 when Andrew C. Archambeau wouldn’t stop emailing and leaving voicemails to a woman he met through a video dating service. In one of his emails he said:
"I've been trying to court you, not stalk you," Mr. Archambeau wrote her electronically on April 15. "If you let me, I would be the best man, friend, lover you ever could have."
Unfortunately, he lived in Michigan which was one of the earliest states to extend stalking laws to cyber space.  5  It was hard to find information, but I believe he was charged with a misdemeanor. 6

Former White House intern Tangela Burkhart stalked George Stephanopoulos (then President Clinton’s communications adviser) while at the White House and in the years following. When he moved to New York City, so did she.  8 In late 1999, Burkhart was spotted three days in a row at a coffeehouse Stephanopoulos frequented.  In 1998, she was arrested twice for stalking him. 9 In early 2000, she was ordered to stay away from parts of New York City. 8
Tumblr media
After their daughter went missing in 1974, the family of Amy Billig received consent phone calls for nearly 20 years from a man who claimed that he knew where Amy was, or he knew what was being done to Amy:
Throughout the ordeal, the one constant in their lives was the caller -- Mrs. Billig describes his voice as "low, threatening" -- from whom they began hearing within weeks of the disappearance. In one call, according to court documents filed in the case against Mr. Blair, the man told Mrs. Billig that "she would be abducted like her daughter and sold into a slave trade." In another, he told her she only had two weeks to live. 10.
In October of 1995, the police finally caught up with him. By tracing his calls to a cell phone they discovered that the caller was Henry J. Blair, a 47 year old veteran of the United States Customs Service. A married guy with two kids. He was found guilty of  misdemeanor stalking in March of 1996. Blair claimed:
In his confession, Blair blamed his calls on obsessive-compulsive behavior arising, he said, from the stress of his job. He claimed he never sought psychiatric counseling because it might have wrecked his career. “Just a bunch of crank calls” is how he described his vicious campaign, insisting that he “would never act out on anything…. The pressures would mount. I would call, and then it would subside.” 11

An amazing review of 1992′s Johnny Stecchino
>Roberto Benigni, the writer-director-star of "Johnny Stecchino," (at the Goldwyn Pavilion, Beverly Center Cineplex) shares one major quality with the great silent movie comics, the Chaplins and Keatons. Somehow, he seems not quite of this Earth.
With his elfin, pointy face and tiny, agile frame, he's a moon child, a glorious freak. When Benigni begins his specialty--a rapid, almost brain-dizzying patter, where his maniacal discourse and flailing arms shred all logic to tatters--his voice and persona take on weird, musical tones, like Gabrieli's trumpet with a frog in the bell.
"Johnny Stecchino," a showcase for Benigni, was the biggest box-office hit in the history of the Italian movie industry, bigger than "La Dolce Vita" or "Cinema Paradiso." But it's unlikely to strike that universal a chord here. It's a classic star vehicle: a simple romantic crime comedy about accident-prone bus driver, Dante, who unknowingly assumes the role of his look-alike Sicilian gangster, Johnny. It exists mainly to show Benigni off, let him daffily race through his repertoire.
But, if you don't recognize Benigni--and, though he's a first-magnitude Italian star, most American audiences know him only from his Jim Jarmusch films--if, in a way, you aren't rooting for him, it's not quite as funny.
The movie is a sendup of machismo and the Mafia. In it, Johnny's wife Maria (Nicoletta Braschi, Signora Benigni) and his coke-addled lawyer (Paolo Bonacelli) engineer the switch to provide the gangster's many enemies with a plausible corpse, so the real Johnny, hidden in his villa basement, can flee Palermo for Argentina. But there's another symbolic layer to this story: "Stecchino" means "toothpick" in Italian, and the "Johnny Toothpick" character is, in some sense, the evil fantasy-come-true of hapless Dante.
Like most "double" movies, from "Prince and the Pauper" to "The Prisoner of Zenda," it's a secret wish-fulfillment tale. Dante, a bumbling but benevolent little bus driver, goes woozy whenever he sees a beautiful woman. Johnny is a gravelly voiced lady-killer brute, who kills without qualm and slaps gorgeous Maria if she kisses him during sex.
And though kind little Dante, who serenades his busful of beaming, learning-impaired passengers with a jolly zoo song, shows no apparent desire to be a brutal gangster, it's down there underneath. He'd like the power, the freedom, certainly the sex.
The movie strips his id, lets him play at being bad Al Pacino. But it's a crucial plot twist that Dante never knows he's been substituted for a notorious criminal. Instead, he accepts all the crazy lies and misconceptions Maria and Johnny's shyster attorney keep feeding him: that the gourmet meals sent down to Johnny are being fed to a ravenous pet dog; that the lawyer's cocaine is diabetes medicine, snorted through a lira bill; that, when the town erupts in gunfire or half a Palermo opera audience screams for the impostor's head, it's because he's stolen a banana.
That's how Dante keeps his innocence. His naivete is immense. But no more so, really, than killer Johnny, who falls into a trance whenever he hears the word mother, and keeps complaining that the "wimp" Dante doesn't look anything like him. They're alter egos, like swinger Buddy Love and schlemiel Julius Kelp in Jerry Lewis' "The Nutty Professor," and they even have complementary personal phallic symbols: Dante's bananas and Johnny's toothpicks. When they meet, appropriately, it's in another reprise of the legendary two men and a mirror gag from Max Lindner and the Marx Brothers.
As an actor, Benigni is unique. Like Chaplin, Laurel or Hardy, he's a human mixed metaphor: a devilish cherub, a seraphic imp. (In "Il Piccolo Diavolo," he played a brash little demon who fell in love with the priest who exorcised him.) As a director, his style is big, clean, lucid. All the characters are snazzily exaggerated, and cinematographer Giuseppe Lanci's shots of Palermo have sumptuous size and spaciousness.
As a writer, like many comics, he tends to string together set pieces, sometimes illogically. Dante is boob or would-be sharpster, Maria shifts too swiftly from murderess to heroine. And it's hard to figure why everyone in town mistakes Dante for Johnny, except the police colonel to whom he confesses his "banana robbery."
What buoys "Johnny Stecchino" (MPAA-rated R for language and drug-related humor) is its impudence, its tender-hearted wackiness, its revelry in all the squirrelly quirks of Benigni's beguilingly screw-loose persona. The movie is a nose-tweak of the Mafia, government and organized religion, but there's a wide-eyed style that softens its roughest gags. That tone is wonderful, childlike, unmalicious. If not quite benign, at least it's Benigni.
