Music Shuffle Tag~ 🎶

TASK: It’s easy, all you have to do is put your music library on shuffle and list the first ten songs. Feel free to add in some personal liner notes if you’re inclined!

First off, thanks a lot for the tag, @lin-ful ! <3

Secondly, I’m kind of stuck because I listen to two playlists on repeat, both have a large number of songs and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to compile them... or maybe I’m just too lazy to google it. So what we’re gonna do is make two versions of it, and lmao that’ll just give you more fun stuff to binge listen to if you wish~

List 1: K-pop

This playlist is basically my K-pop music. Some honorable mentions that couldn’t make the list: Oh My God (G-IDLE), Monster (Irene x Seulgi), Way Back Home (SHAUN), Chica (Chung Ha).

1. Heel - NO:EL, Loco

I recently added this to my playlist bc @some-ikemen-snob recommended it and her recommendations are the shit 😎 . And this song IS the shit. So, yeah.

2. Say My Name - ATEEZ

I remember hearing this song while randomly scrolling through youtube, and I recall when I saw it pop up for the nth time in my recommendations I was baffled at the hype it had, and then I finally heard it and bam now it’s in my playlist.😅

3. Touch - NCT 127

This song is so cute, and the choreography too! I’m absolutely obsessed with the choreography at the “Na na nananana” part, it’s addicting to watch.

4. Beautiful Goodbye - Chen

Chen’s voice, I mean do I even need to say anything more?

5. Playboy - EXO

This song does things to me. I mean, the way Kai whispers “Play... boy” or rather half moans half groans should be declared illegal. 😉

6. Dinner - Suho, Jane Jang

I love the music and how well both their voices blend in with it. It’s one of my favourites, for sure. ❤️

7. HIP - MAMAMOO

This was the first ever song of MAMAMOO’s I ever heard, and dare I say I fell for Hwa sa after that. I mean have you seen that woman? And the rest too, of course. Such badasses.

8. My Love - Baekhyun

I love his voice so, so much ❤️ ! This song is so calming, so peaceful. It’s the kind of music I would play when I’m stressed, when I’m out, when it’s raining and basically the point is why would you stop playing this?

9. Stay With Me - Chanyeol, Punch

I needn’t explain my obsession love for this song, need I? This song is loved by almost everyone I know who watches K-dramas (even if they don’t listen to Kpop), and that’s because it is indeed such a great song! If you haven’t heard it yet, do give it a try~ 💕

10. 무제(無題) (Untitled, 2014) - G-DRAGON

If you dislike this song, we’re gonna have problems. It’s a masterpiece, one of G-dragon’s most amazing works 💙 . It’s... yeah, I have no words to describe how beautiful this song is.

2. Aaja Sanam Madhur Chandni Men - Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Day

Can you tell Lata Mangeshkar was a popular singer of those times? Her voice is so amazing I swear. And this song’s lyrics and tune is so catchy. Again, it’s from a black and white movie. 🤭

3. Aap Ki Ankhon Mein Kuch - Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar

Kishore Kumar is SUCH A CLASSIC. He’s a legend, and if my playlist hadn’t brought up one of his songs I’d have sued Spotify. That said, Kishore Kumar was and Indian playback singer, actor, music director, lyricist, writer, director, producer and screenwriter. Need I say more about this man? Also, this song’s lyrics are so respectful and deep, I love those times.

4. Chala Jata Hoon - Kishore Kumar

Kishore Kumar with his voice, and Rakesh Khanna with his acting for such a powerful duo. You’ll find many more of his songs in this list, most probably. My mom introduced me to Kishore Kumar’s music (She’s a hardcore fan btw) and I haven’t looked back since. Proudly so. <3

5. Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi - Kishore Kumar, Sushma Shrestha

Sharmila Tagore was a beauty, no doubt. And this song has two versions. I’ll link the other one here. Can you tell I’m basically speechless and have no idea how to form sentences with have a flow?

6. Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho - Jagjit Singh

The main lyric basically translates to “Why are you smiling so much? What’s is this pain that you’re hiding? You’re smiling so much.” and if that isn’t meaningful, I don’t know what is. Moreover, Jagjit Singh’s voice is so soothing to the ears, I could listen to this song every day and never get tired of it. 🥰

7. Yeh Sham Mastani - Kishore Kumar

Can you guess who the actor is? Damn straight, it’s Rajesh Khanna. I need help 😅 I love Kishore Kumar’s voice so much hELp.

8. Ek Ajnabee Haseena Se - Kishore Kumar

Yes, it’s Rajesh Khanna who’s the actor, yet again. Moreover, this song is so beautiful, so awesome, so pretty, so everything I LOVE IT SO MUCH GAH.

9. Pyar Hame Kis Mod Pe - Kishore Kumar, R. D. Burman, Bhupinder Singh, Sapan Chakraborty, Gulshan Bawra

I kid you not my heart did a little flip when I checked out the youtube video to add the link and saw Amitabh Bachhan 🤭 😂 . Amitabh Bachhan now looks sophisticated and classy, but the Amitabh in his younger days looked so freaking handsome I’m deceased, and I need help. Oh sweet lords, and this song. This song is everything, such deep voices, the lyrics, the beats, this song is EVERYTHING and if you hate this we’re gonna have problems. Also Amitabh Bachhan OH MY GOD HE LOOKS SO NICE

10. Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli - Manna Day

Spotify did me good, not gonna lie. It literally saved the best for the last. ❤️ This song is one of my absolute, ultimate, top favourites and that’s because Manna Day’s voice does justice to everything, Rajesh Khanna, the lyrics, the song, us, everything. It’s so pleasing and a complete joy to listen to.

The very mention of their names immediately brings to our mind the evergreen super-hit song ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana…’ from the film ANDAZ. From the opening prelude to the yodelling to the fast-paced beats – everything about the song became unforgettable! Added to that superstar Rajesh Khanna’s charismatic screen presence turned this song not only into one of the most loved songs of Hindi cinema but also became one of the biggest hits of the careers of Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar and Shankar-Jaikishen.

ANDAZ (1971): ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana…’

Shankar-Jaikishen (SJ): The music director duo who revolutionized the very definition of Hindi film music with their path-breaking music and tunes…

Kishore Kumar: The genius actor-singer who created his own path and carved a place in the Hindi film music scene which people cannot even dream of achieving…

Both the singer as well as the music director duo reached dizzying heights of popularity during the years they were active. And yet when we look back it is sad that three of the most loved and cherished musical geniuses of our industry hardly got much opportunity to work together during their long and illustrious careers …

Interestingly they even made their debut around the same time –

Shankar-Jaikishen’s debut film as independent music directors was R K Films’ Barsaat which released in 1949…

Kishore Kumar’s debut film as an actor and a playback singer (sang for Dev Anand) was Ziddi which released in 1948…

Shankar Jaikishen somehow always worked with heroes like Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Biswajit, Joy Mukjerjee, Shashi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt for whom Kishore Kumar never got the opportunity to playback. When they worked for Dev Anand they used Mohammed Rafi except for one instance-‘Dooriyan nazdeekiyan ban gayee…’ a Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhonsle duet that turned out to be the biggest hit of the film:

DUNIYA (1968): ‘Dooriyan nazdeekiyan ban gayi…’

It was around the late forties that the triumvirate of Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar entered the industry, became great stars creating a special niche for themselves and also had their own favourite playback singers singing for them. While Rafi became the voice of Dilip Kumar with Talat Mehmood also contributing in some songs, Mukesh was the voice of Raj Kapoor with Manna Dey singing for him at times. In case of Dev Anand, both Rafi and Kishore Kumar’s voices were used.and hence Kishore Kumar between 1948 and 1968 sang only for himself when he acted or did playback for Dev Anand.

NEW DELHI, KROREPATI, BEGUNAAH, RANGOLI and SHARARAT are the five films for which Shankar-Jaikishen worked with Kishore Kumar where he acted and sang his own songs and what beautiful music they created:

Interestingly both the above song and ‘Zindagi ek safar…’ from ANDAZ had other singers singing their version but really do people even remember that? For when Kishore Kumar sings, such is the magic and resonance in his voice that the other versions pale in comparison.

While Kishore Kumar enjoyed immense popularity as an actor-singer during the fifties and early sixties, he had to undergo a long period of struggle to be considered as a playback singer for other heroes. In fact there are rare instances when other singers like Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey sang for him.

After giving him such a wonderful solo, wonder why did Shankar-Jaikishen settle for Rafi to sing ‘Ajab hai dastaan meri yeh zindagi…’!!! What made them think that Kishore would not have delivered that song brilliantly in his own way?

To achieve his dream of becoming a playback singer, Kishore Kumar had to become an actor and act for almost 20 years before giving up acting to become full-fledged singer. This phase coincided with the coming of a new star Rajesh Khanna in the horizon and Kishore Kumar became a voice to reckon with for all the actors after 1968.

In 1968 Shankar-Jaikishen gave music in the Dharmendra-Hema Malini starrer TUM HASEEN MAIN JAWAAN. Kishore Kumar got to sing only one song and that too a comical one in the film- ‘Munne ki amma yeh to bata…’. The song did become popular with the masses:

THE FATEFUL YEAR OF 1971:

This year was important for this combination in more ways than one. Not only did they team up to give several super-hits unfortunately, it was also the last year they worked as a team together for Jaikishen from the duo passed away due to cirrhosis of liver.

Apart from the blockbuster song ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana…’, the Kishore-SJ combo gave us some of these superb songs also in 1971 :

SEEMA: ‘Waqt thoda sa abhi kuch aur guzar jaane de…’

First in 1966, lyricist Shailendra passed away. On Septemnber 12, 1971, Jaikishen passed away. The team of SJ was hit very badly. Though Shankar did try to keep the flag flying by continuing to compose under the name of Shankar-Jaikishen as per their agreement, but the magic had started fading away.

POST 1971:

Films like JANGAL MEIN MANGAL, AANKHON AANKHON MEIN and DIL DAULAT DUNIYA released in 1972. Probably the music for some of the songs had already been scored by the two together and kept in their music bank. Here are some brilliant songs from these films:

Remembering OP Nayyar on his 91st birth anniversary. Omkar Prasad Nayyar (16 January 1926 – 28 January 2007) was an Indian film music composer, singer-songwriter, music producer, and musician. He won the 1958 Filmfare Award for Best Music Director (for Naya Daur). Nayyar worked extensively with singers Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi but not with leading Bollywood female singer Lata Mangeshkar. However, Mangeshkar's song Ek To Balam Teri Yaad Satayein (from the 1958 film Aji Bas Shukriya) was used in the 1973 Hindi film Taxi Driver, for which Nayyar was music director. According to music and film expert Rajesh Subramanian, "Aap Ke Haseen Rukh" (from Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi) was planned with full orchestration but many of the musicians were late for the recording. After a disagreement with Mohammed Rafi, Nayyar began working with singer Mahendra Kapoor. Kapoor performed Nayyar's songs "Badal Jaaye Agar Maali" and "Chaman Hotaa Nahi Khaali" in Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi. Based on a Bengali language work by Rabindranath Tagore, Nayyar composed "Chal Akelaa, Chal Akelaa" (sung by Mukesh in 1969 film Sambandh). Nayyar co-produced songs with Shamshad Begum (including "Kajra Mohabbatwala"), and after Madhubala's 1969 death Vyjayanthimala, Mala Sinha, Padmini, Asha Parekh and Sharmila Tagore lip-synced several Nayyar-Bhosle songs. Nayyar and Bhosle parted ways in 1974, and he then worked with Dilraj Kaur, Alka Yagnik, Krishna Kale, Vani Jayaram and Kavita Krishanmurthy. Majrooh Sultanpuri and Sahir Ludhianvi wrote the lyrics for some of Nayyar's earlier songs, including "Naya Daur". Nayyar also worked with developing lyricists such as Jan Nisar Akhtar, Qamar Jalalabadi, S. H. Bihari and Ahmed Wasi. He began the tradition of assigning full, three-minute songs to comedians. Om Prakash sang Nayyar's "Churi Bane Kanta Bane" in Jaali Note, and Johnny Walker sang "Aye Dil Hai Mushkil Jeena Yahaan" in CID, "Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Jee" in Mr. & Mrs. 55, "Main Bambaika Baaboo, Naam Meraa Anjaanaa" in Naya Daur and "Bajewala" in Basant. In addition to songs for Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt's, Thandi Thandi Hawaa, Nayyar wrote "Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawaanonkaa" (featuring Dilip Kumar and Ajit) for Naya Daur (1957). The song earned him the 1958 Filmfare Best Music Director Award. The last Nayyar song performed by Bhosle was "Chain Se Humko Kabhi". Intended for Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye (1973), disappeared in the film's final cut but won Bhosle the 1975 Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Nayyar was more active during the 1960s than he was in the following decade, and did not compose music for younger actors such as Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. His films included Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, Dharmendra, Shammi Kapoor, Joy Mukherjee, Biswajit, Feroz Khan, Bharat Bhushan, Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Sharmila Tagore, Madhubala, Rajshree, Rekha, Ameeta and Shyama. In addition to Hindi films, Nayyar composed for Neerajanam in Telugu. He made a brief comeback during the 1990s with Mangni and Nishchay in 1992 and Zid in 1994.
