LATA & RD & KISHORE - THE FINAL CHAPTER (NEE DHARAMYUDH)! . . . . . . . . -OF THE MYSTERIOUS HEART ATTACKS BOTH KISHORE & RD WERE AFRAID OF! -OF 1985: THE YEAR THAT CHANGED BOLLYWOOD FOREVER!

This strange (below) Aajtak video clip caught my attention, & got me googling & researching a while.

And what came of it was highly interesting to say the least!

As it turns out, Lata Mangeshkar on average sang only 2 songs per year for R.D. Burman all life/career, while he on average composed 36 songs/year for 36 years straight!

A further cursory glance reveals even more startling facts- Lata Mangeshkar it seems stopped singing for R.D. Burman for the last ~9 yrs of his life/career, after 1985-early 1986 at most, till his death in 1994! All RD films releasing thereafter (’86-’94),bearing Lata’s voice, if pry a bit, either shot/recorded in '85 or early '86 at most!

P.S : Also- Seems this year 1985 has some strange significance in lives of all 3 best friends-Rajesh Khanna (as explained in blogs pertaining to him), R. D. Burman & Kishore Kumar. For Kishore Kumar, we learn, announced his retirement from Bollywood in May 1985, (at the peak of his demand having just recorded 300 songs in 1984), but his pending work lingered, till his death in Oct '87 from his 2nd heart attack (his first having been received in 1982)! https://indiatoday.in/india-today-insight/story/from-

No one till today for certain knows the exact reason for this most surprising & most illogical & obviously highly emotional retirement decision from Bollywood. But one of the public speculations that's been doing the social rounds since those times, & we don't know if this the real or sole reason, is that it could've been borne of his showdown with his brother-in-law & Leena Chandavarkar's brother Anil Chandavarkar, perhaps sometime in the beginning of 1985, on the sets of Kishore's last directorial venture 'Mamta Ki Chhaon Mein' which he'd begun directing in 1984, in which Anil, who'd also acted in films like 1977's Aafat & 1980's Khanjar earlier, was employed as a production assistant by then, the issue for which has not been posted anywhere online, but that was serious enough in Kishore’s eyes, for getting him publicly thrown out of the film, by his own brother-in-law! And that many people believe, certainly contributed to Anil committing suicide just a few days/months later in early 1985, & leading to Kishore's announcement of retirement from Bollywood, just few days/months later, leaving all work on his own film too, that was 90% complete by then, in the process (& perhaps as we see it, merely focusing on completing his pending assignments for others thereon), (a home production that incidentally did make it to screens in 1989 finally, with Rajesh Khanna making a very special appearance).

Anil Chandavarkar, apart from being Leena Chandavarkar's brother, was also the son-in-law of director Atmaram, as husband of his daughter Anjali.

Now another highly curious incident from the very day of Kishore da's heart attack has caught mass attention. Per his wife's statement to the media, Kishore before his death, was looking pale since morning, & post-lunch, lay on his bed, after moving some furniture, & upon inquiry by his wife said, "I am feeling weak". His wife immediately tried calling the doctor, to which Kishore got angry & shouted, "If you call the doctor, I will get a heart attack". His eyed were open & he was breathing out. And just a few moments later, died.

People online have wondered what made Kishore da so wary of the doctors coming to his house then. Others dismiss it as another joke on his part given how he was a habitual jokester. But remember, this was a man clearly experiencing a fatal heart attack just then (as evidenced by the fact that he succumbed to it just few mins later), yet that even in such agony & strife, found the strength to shout out to his wife to not call the doctors, for fear that he may (actually, in his mind) get a heart attack if they came. Isn't this most perplexing & mysterious???! Why was Kishore Kumar so phobic of his home-visiting doctors??? What kind of experiences had he had with them over time, to make him so afraid of their mere name, during his last moments???!

Questions none of us can now with any certainty answer, yet safely & privately (& oh so obviously) guess. :/

And when Kishore Kumar finally did pass away just 2 yrs after his retirement decision, while completing his huge pile of pending work, on that fateful day of Oct 13, 1987, his friend R.D. Burman reportedly told Kishore’s son Amit at his funeral, as recounted by Amit in his video interview to Rajeev Bajaj, that it was time for him, the great R.D. Burman, to retire as well, as he knew his innings was up too!

R. D. Burman would go on to have a heart attack in the very next year of 1988, & would have a heart by-pass surgery needed to be performed on him abroad the following year in 1989, having his work-rate reduced by half for the next 5 yrs.

Another interesting publicly available post--1989 interview excerpt has also come to light, drawing further attention to his state of unease & perhaps anger. RD had always been very careful to not make hyperbolic statements about (his brother) Rajesh, most likely as instructed by the latter himself. Yet on this one occasion in 1990, made an exception, & almost purposely, gave a provocative interview about his bro being the best & all, knowing full well as an insider, how this whole silly Rajesh-Amitabh battle was a mere artificial ‘establishment media’ creation:

“Amitabh would best be remembered by historians as a 'Bollywood Legend', but Rajesh Khanna would remain a 'Permanent Superstar' for generations because of his natural charisma on and off screen. Khanna has done vast genres of films, experimented and performed many roles and also has keen interest in story, music and lyrics of songs in his films. Khanna is more versatile.”

This was an obviously angry RD deliberately hitting out the only way he knew how to, & taking “panga” with the establishment, for reasons we can perhaps now well guess.

RD would land up having his 2nd & most fatal heart attack 3.5 yrs later, on Jan 4, 1994, to eventually pass away.

Followed by a years-long media drive on how RD was unhappy & alone & doing very poor work in his final few yrs, while reality is that music stds of Hindi Cinema as a whole had gone down a few notches by the mid 80s anyway. Also that he was leading essentially the same royal life (albeit in poorer physical health)(he came from a super wealthy North-Easthern royal family btw), as also a bachelor's life since his divorce in 1971, as claimed by the musicians who worked with him (incl guitarist Vineet Shrivastava on Yt), whatever the exact truth of his marriage to Asha Bhosle, that apparently was a secret btwn him & Asha till his death, that no one really knew of, till Asha ji herself made it explicitly known to the world after his death.

P.S.:

1. Some interesting emerging tidbits herein, even if people find outta context, being how twas RD Burman, more Lata's gen, being just 9.5 yrs younger, that ended the Lata-SD cold war on since mid 1950s, by going to her house & asking her to sing his 1st song as a independent composer in 'Chhote Nawab' in 1960. The 2 never parted for next quarter century!

2. Further, Chaitanya Padukone's book 'RD Burmaniya' carries a Lata intv, stating how RD asked her to give him a 'counselling letter' of "Do's & Dont's" when he did marry her sis Asha at a time in 1980's, as a gift.

Ofcourse, any Music Playlist of the Great One, be incomplete w/o honoring his singing voice- Kishore Kumar. For though other legends like Manna Dey, Mohd Rafi, & Mukesh, did sing handful songs each for him, many even placed at very top of charts, with over 330+ recorded songs as a pair, Rajesh Khanna & Kishore Kumar remain inseparable in hearts & minds of music fans across the globe, as perhaps the greatest musical collaboration of Hin Cin.

Secondly, I’m kind of stuck because I listen to two playlists on repeat, both have a large number of songs and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to compile them... or maybe I’m just too lazy to google it. So what we’re gonna do is make two versions of it, and lmao that’ll just give you more fun stuff to binge listen to if you wish~

List 1: K-pop

This playlist is basically my K-pop music. Some honorable mentions that couldn’t make the list: Oh My God (G-IDLE), Monster (Irene x Seulgi), Way Back Home (SHAUN), Chica (Chung Ha).

I remember hearing this song while randomly scrolling through youtube, and I recall when I saw it pop up for the nth time in my recommendations I was baffled at the hype it had, and then I finally heard it and bam now it’s in my playlist.😅

This song is so cute, and the choreography too! I’m absolutely obsessed with the choreography at the “Na na nananana” part, it’s addicting to watch.

I love his voice so, so much ❤️ ! This song is so calming, so peaceful. It’s the kind of music I would play when I’m stressed, when I’m out, when it’s raining and basically the point is why would you stop playing this?

I needn’t explain my obsession love for this song, need I? This song is loved by almost everyone I know who watches K-dramas (even if they don’t listen to Kpop), and that’s because it is indeed such a great song! If you haven’t heard it yet, do give it a try~ 💕

If you dislike this song, we’re gonna have problems. It’s a masterpiece, one of G-dragon’s most amazing works 💙 . It’s... yeah, I have no words to describe how beautiful this song is.

Also, this song’s lyrics are so respectful and deep, I love those times.

4. Chala Jata Hoon - Kishore Kumar

Kishore Kumar with his voice, and Rakesh Khanna with his acting for such a powerful duo. You’ll find many more of his songs in this list, most probably. My mom introduced me to Kishore Kumar’s music (She’s a hardcore fan btw) and I haven’t looked back since. Proudly so. <3

5. Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi - Kishore Kumar, Sushma Shrestha

Sharmila Tagore was a beauty, no doubt. And this song has two versions. I’ll link the other one here. Can you tell I’m basically speechless and have no idea how to form sentences with have a flow?

6. Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho - Jagjit Singh

The main lyric basically translates to “Why are you smiling so much? What’s is this pain that you’re hiding? You’re smiling so much.” and if that isn’t meaningful, I don’t know what is. Moreover, Jagjit Singh’s voice is so soothing to the ears, I could listen to this song every day and never get tired of it. 🥰

7. Yeh Sham Mastani - Kishore Kumar

Can you guess who the actor is? Damn straight, it’s Rajesh Khanna. I need help 😅 I love Kishore Kumar’s voice so much hELp.

8. Ek Ajnabee Haseena Se - Kishore Kumar

Yes, it’s Rajesh Khanna who’s the actor, yet again. Moreover, this song is so beautiful, so awesome, so pretty, so everything I LOVE IT SO MUCH GAH.

9. Pyar Hame Kis Mod Pe - Kishore Kumar, R. D. Burman, Bhupinder Singh, Sapan Chakraborty, Gulshan Bawra

I kid you not my heart did a little flip when I checked out the youtube video to add the link and saw Amitabh Bachhan 🤭 😂 . Amitabh Bachhan now looks sophisticated and classy, but the Amitabh in his younger days looked so freaking handsome I’m deceased, and I need help. Oh sweet lords, and this song. This song is everything, such deep voices, the lyrics, the beats, this song is EVERYTHING and if you hate this we’re gonna have problems. Also Amitabh Bachhan OH MY GOD HE LOOKS SO NICE

10. Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli - Manna Day

Spotify did me good, not gonna lie. From sleeve notes written for SaReGaMa’s LEGENDS CD set in 2009: More than half a century after the cobra swayed to the clavioline, masquerading as the been, in ‘Tan dole mera man dole’, its notes still reverberate across India, and in many other parts of the world. It was, and remains, Kalyanji Virji Shah’s best-known musical signature. Kalyanji had first used the instrument in a film called Naag Panchami (1953, music Chitragupta), but that went largely un-noticed. ‘Tan dole’, a Hemant Kumar tune from a box-office hit, was the chart-topper of 1954, so listeners took good notice of its mesmerising been theme. Developed in France by a designer named Constant Martin, the clavioline was introduced in 1947. Five years later, musician Kalyanji was playing it here, in India, in film song takes. Four years after Nagin, Kalyanji had arrived as music director, with Samrat Chandragupta. And the following year, younger brother Anandji, who was a child actor and chorus singer too, joined him to create the K-A team that stood firm for over 40 years. Nevertheless, as Anandji, some four years younger (now 88), is often heard saying, “Kalyanjibhai is watching all this from above. He is very much with us in spirit.” Kalyanji Virji Shah died in the year 2000, at the age of 72.

Born in Kundrodi village of the Mundra taluka in Kutchh, the brothers grew up in Mumbai, where their father ran a food-grain store. Inclined more towards music than academics, they developed the self-taught ability to play a host of instruments, and formed part of school bands. By 1944-45, the teenager siblings had started playing in film song recordings. Big brother set up his own band in 1950, calling it Kalyanji and Party, with Purshottam Upadhyaya singing ‘Too mera chaand maen teree chaandnee’, the super-hit Naushad tune from Dillagi, to thunderous encores. The band performed in Bombay and in other nearby towns. For a while, the businessman in him did surface, and Kalyanji started a tailoring shop in partnership with a friend. Destiny, however, ensured that the shop did not prosper, drawing Kalyanji even closer to a world where a needle was something that played a gramophone record, not a device to stitch clothes with.

Many of us have heard the popular tunes the brothers composed for films like Samrat Chandragupta, Bedard Zamana Kya Jane, Chhalia and Bluff Master, the last two being the earliest directorial forays of director Manmohan Desai, but few would be aware that it was producer Subhash Desai, Manmohan’s brother, who gave Kalyanji his music directorial his break. Impressed with his prowess at song recordings of various recognised composers, Subhash saw a competent future music director in Kalyanji, and made him an offer that was strange, but nevertheless one that he could not refuse. Would he agree to a contract offering him 11 film assignments as music director, with a fee of Rs. 5,000 for the first film, Rs. 10,000 for the second…a recurring Rs. 5,000 increment per film, non-negotiable? The offer was too good to resist, so Kalyanji agreed, but he did ask Subhash, “Why11 films? Why not 10? Or 12?” The reply was convincing, “Eleven is my lucky number.” As it transpired, they did not do 11 films together, but Kalyanji’s career choice was made.

The K-A success story begins with Kalyanji’s kingly debut, Samrat Chandragupta. ‘Chahe paas ho’ is a touching lyric, with a tinge of sadness, as is the next number, ‘Door kahin tu chal’, another Rafi-Lata duet, from Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane, both penned by Bharat Vyas. With a title like Madari, there had to be a snake-charmer and his been in play, and the theme track, penned by Faruk Kaiser and rendered by Lata and Mukesh, indeed provided flashbacks of the legendary Kalyanji patent. Soon after he wrote his first song for them in Chandrasena, Gulshan Bawra penned a real gem in Satta Bazar, and this time the brothers invited their mentor Hemant Kumar to join Lata in the recording room, with amazing results. Who can forget ‘Tumhe yaad hoga’? Not yet the He Man he was to become in his later years, Dharmendra in Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere was emoting to Mukesh’s emotion-charged playback, rendering Shamim Jaipuri’s rich poetry. Graduating from smaller set-ups into a Raj Kapoor vehicle, K-A hit big time in Chhalia. Nonsensical verse from a sensible writer, Qamar Jalalabadi, ‘Dum dum diga diga’, with Mukesh providing playback to Raj’s on-screen antics, set the aisles afire.

Soon, they were signed to compose for Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath, a Shashi Kapoor starrer, and Bluff Master. Both films enjoyed reasonable success and the music went around too. In Bluff Master, we find the rare phenomenon of four voices being used for the same actor: Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Shamshad Begum (Shammi Kapoor in drag) and Rafi. It was Rafi who immortalised ‘Govinda ala re’ and sang the duet ‘Husn chala kuchh aisi chal’ with Lata. Anand Bakhshi wrote inspired lyrics for Phool Bane Angaare, and Mukesh, as usual, delivered them with consummate artistry. By 1964, K-A were in the Premier League. That very year, they came up with such melodious tracks as the lilting ‘Humsafar mere humsafar’ (Purnima), where they teamed up with Gulzar, a rarity, and the two Mukesh solos from Ji Chahta Hai and Himalaya Ki God Mein. The former was written by Majrooh, not a K-A regular. Another infrequent teaming worked very well, as Hasrat Jaipuri wrote and Rafi sang in great style, ‘Dil beqarar sa hai’ (Ji Chahta Hai). Melodious, hummable and catchy. A ghazal on Shammi Kapoor with Bakhshi writing and Rafi singing may not be a common occurrence, but just savour ‘Teri zulfen pareshan’ (Preet Na Jane Reet). Staying with Mukesh on Shashi, after MLMH, the duo came up with a moody duet in Juari, ‘Humsafar ab yeh safar kat jayega’. If there was still any doubt about the standing of the duo in the rankings, Jab Jab Phool Khile laid to rest all criticism. Every track was heard everywhere. The songs had it all: pathos, fun, longing, depression, pep. For both K-A and Anand Bakhshi, the success of JJPK was to remain a milestone forever.

Rafi provided playback for debutant Rajesh Khanna in the theme song of his debut vehicle, Raaz, re-uniting K-A with Shamim Jaipuri, producing haunting results. Indeevar’s lyrics sang of cruel fate in Dil Ne Pukara, and who better to voice them than Mukesh, as ‘Waqt karta jo wafa’. In the same vein was the Suhag Raat lament, ‘Khush raho’. Manna De came in to give playback for Pran in Upkar and Zanjeer, rendering two of his most acclaimed numbers. It took the duo 19 hours to record ‘Mere desh ki dharti’, the patriotic anthem of Upkar. Saraswatichandra, based on a literary classic, needed the linguistic mastery of Indeevar to weave in the songs, and the author of ‘Kasme vaade pyar vafa’ made it count. Filmfare awarded the duo for the best music of the year. It was still pristine K-A, full of melody, working with Lata and Mukesh. Another award followed some years later, for Kora Kagaz, which had a pathos-laden title-track in the voice of Kishore. Not many might realise, but K-A used Kishore Kumar for the first time in the 1968 film Suhag Raat, singing a sad song, a full decade after the duo had started their career. A comic song was rendered by Manna De while Mukesh was called-upon to put across the other sad lyric.

Only Rafi could have set swinging mood for Shashi Kapoor to gyrate on screen in ‘Nain milakar chaen churana’ (Aamne Saamne). Rafi for Shashi it was again in Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati and Raja Saab. Part of the female vocals in Raja Saab came from Suman Kalyanpur. Suman had sung for K-A in MLMH and JJPK too, and was to partner Manhar in his first hit number in Vishwas. Giving Hemlata her break in the same film, K-A paired her with good-old friend Mukesh. Soon, the duo was to show its preference for rotating the strike, training and honing a host of budding singing talent, while reverting to the established names with equal regularity. Like a lot of extremely popular Mahendra-Manoj Kumar, Kishore-Amitabh Bachchan and Kishore-Rajesh Khanna outings. Incidentally, K-A took three days to record the back-ground score of Suhaag Raat, while they needed a whole month for Purab Aur Paschim. For the ‘Om jai Jagdeesh Hare’ bhajan of PAP, the composers used 50 chorus singers to get the effect normally created by violins. They called it human resonance. Delay (natural echo) was the highlight of ‘Mere mitwa’ (Geet). The child-like double speed of ‘Na sun sun sun bura’ (Priya) was simply achieved by recording on spool-tape at a particular speed and playing it back at double the speed. Most of their work was done at the Famous, Tardeo, recording studio.

There is Rafi, and not Kishore, for Rajesh Khanna, oozing sensuality as only he could, in Chhoti Bahu: ‘Yeh raat hai pyasi pyasi’, echoing musician hero Rajendra Kumar’s heart-rending call in Geet and charting a romantic route for Dharmendra in Kab Kyon Aur Kahan? He also offers love lessons in Upaasna; in the Haath Ki Safai duet, he makes a solemn promise of eternal love; and he goes on Dilip Kumar for the intoxicating ‘Peete peete’ duet with Asha Bhosle in Bairaag. As Western as it gets is the rare title chorus ‘Pretty pretty Priya’ (Priya) and as Sanskritised as it can get is the Kishore hilarity ‘Priye praneshwari’ (Hum Tum Aur Woh). Kalyanji-Anandji made Shatrughan Sinha sing in Kashmakash, Amitabh Bachchan in Laawaris and Anil Kapoor in Chameli Ki Shaadi. They also gave ample opportunities to the emerging talent of 70s’ generation, as you can sample on the Shailendra Singh, Suresh Wadkar, Anwar, Alka Yagnik and Kanchan tracks.

Known for their hundreds of stage performances, in India and abroad, both brothers also enjoyed a sturdy reputation as funsters, with a joke for every occasion and a keen sense of self-deprecating humour. They once famously described themselves as medical practitioners. “We offer all lines of treatment. If some producer approaches us with symptoms that demand a classical approach, we recommend the Ayurvedic style of medicine: Slow, but efficacious in the long-term. On the other hand, if some film-maker wants to experiment with the musical score of his film, we suggest Homoeopathic type of tunes: May work, may not. Some element of risk is involved. If, however, he wants the juke-boxes to jingle and listeners to start singing along instantaneously, we churn out Allopathic compositions: Like injections, they have instant, strong effect, but the effect may wear out sooner.” Music, along with laughter, is the best medicine known to mankind. Kalyanji-Anandji have already issued a statutory warning to your troubles to keep away, for there’s no place for them, ‘Mere angne men tumhara kya kaam hae?’

32 Years of Mr. India (29/05/1987) Mr. India is a 1987 superhero film directed by Shekhar Kapur, based on a screenplay written by Salim-Javed. It stars Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in the lead roles. Amrish Puri, Ashok Kumar, Satish Kaushik, Ajit Vachani and Sharat Saxena are featured in supporting roles. The film was the second highest-grossing Indian film of 1987 after Dharmendra's Hukumat and remains a cult classic in India. The film was known for several of its lines and songs, including Sridevi's "Miss Hawa Hawaii" performance, and Amrish Puri's quote "Mogambo khush hua" ("Mogambo is pleased"), which is one of the most famous quotes of Bollywood and became synonymous with Puri. The Mogambo character is also considered to be one of the best villains in Bollywood history. Laxmikant-Pyarelal's music performed well too, especially the song "Hawa Hawaii", which is very popular till today. The film has often been featured in different lists of top Bollywood films. Indiatimes Movies ranks the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. This was the last film that the writing duo Salim-Javed wrote together. They had split up earlier in 1982, but came back for one last film. On the centenary of Indian Cinema, Mr. India was included amongst one of the 100 Greatest Indian Films of All Time. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan were offered the lead role, but they turned it down as they could not relate with the invisible hero.

On the Holy festive of EID, my love and wishes for EiD to all .. EID MUBARAK ..

On this occasion the young ask the elders for ‘EiDi’ .. a gift or some token money .. I am an elder and my ‘eidi’ is love and peace and affection to all .. remain in sublime affection ever .. remain in constant loving consider .. remain in the environ of holding each others hands .. remain within and remain without .. for each has its divine connect ..

The divine never did any harm to any .. ever did he give care and the best for each , His creation .. never did he bring conflict and misalignment .. never did He discriminate .. never did He ever treat each creation with remorse or pain .. He gave us all living the wellness of mankind humanity and its care .. we are all blessed and in great affection to Him ..

and this be a song sequence from an early film of mine .. ‘Parwana’, and this be Yogeeta Bali the leading lady of the film .. I was not the leading man, Navin Nischol was, and this was the most awkward moment for me because I had to dance and lip sync and I was hopeless and immature and just terrible - the fact that I still am is another matter - but there .. there we are ..

Yogeeta is now married to Mithun Charavarty .. and has left the film world .. they have a son who is also working in the profession, Mimo ..

But those days of ‘Parwana’ under the direction of Jyoti Swaroop, we affectionately called him ‘buzziya’ .. a discovery and who worked with Mehmood Bhai, went magical too .. those initial days of work, the scenes of some intensity with Om Prakash ji .. his complimentary words and the reason I believe that many other makers suddenly started to take notice .. late night shoots and the effort to keep the eyes open .. those multiple raw eggs devoured one after the other, because someone advised it would keep me awake .. ya right .. !!

Most of it was shot at Mohan Studios .. the studio with an amazing history .. Bimal Roy did most of his work there .. today’s generation would have trouble understanding the magnificent contribution of Bimal Da to cinema .. Hrishikesh Mukherji was his assistant under him and many of .. indeed all of Hrishi Da’s films were all shot at Mohan Studios .. as also most of Prakash Mehra films .. in particular ‘Muqaddar ka Sikandar’ ..

Mohan Studios a large expanse of raw land about and only 2 floors .. well 3 actually but the 3rd was more a godown .. the roofs and its making were very basic .. corrugated tin roofs and tender walls ..

In MKS, one of the last scenes shot was the mujra and the death scene of the courtesan, and when we packed up for the day at around 9 pm and came out form the floor .. there was a loud bang from the floor ..

The entire set had collapsed .. !!

Saved by the bell .. all of us .. !!

A small passage way separated the 2 floors of Mohan Studios .. there were two large trees in that space .. we often sat about it during shot breaks and Hrishi Da would pick a member from his crew and set up his chess table and play .. he was good !!

‘Anand’ on one floor and after , ‘NamakHaram’ on the other .. Salim Javed would visit the studio often .. they worked closely with Rajesh Khanna those days and during the shoot of ‘Anand’ would drop by .. I think I met them there first .. and never realised that this association would take me thus far, in some of the most iconic films they wrote as a combine ..

It was here during the shoot of ‘Anand’ that my Mother visited me on set for the very first time .. having travelled from Delhi to spend some time with me ..

There was a very small tin shed room like structure at the back of the studio, which Jaya and I converted into a select make up room .. corrugated tin shed, a mirror and a smallish couch to sit on during breaks .. stuck up little pictures on the tin walls to give designation and occupancy exclusivity to the area .. haha !

Historic films made there .. while I was working and many before me too ..

NOW sold off to real estate development and towers of residences adorn the studio space ..

I wonder if the occupants of the multiple apartments built on it would ever know the quality of the iconic earth they live upon ..

Silent towering structures .. imposing yet humble in its approach .. not able to speak a word yet hear and know all .. at times I wonder if only each wall of the studios could speak could talk .. what a massive library of stories would come about ..

Its back to work tomorrow and the drive to it ..

we were almost like this in those days ..

BRIEF INSIGHTS INTO 'METHOD ACTING' (OR AS MANY EXPERTS CALL 'METHOD THAT WORKS ACTING'), FROM THE STREAM'S WIDELY REGARDED GREATS (AS KNOWN & POPULAR AMONG INDIAN CONNOISSEURS) - RAJESH KHANNA, DILIP KUMAR, GERARD DEPARDIEU & MARLON BRANDO!

The profession of acting & cinema per se, is as widely agreed, going through it's worst phase ever since inception, the world over, brought on largely by a lack of good quality scripts & emotional ideas, but equally by a dwindling class of acting talent.

So thought to share few learnings & revelations of mine & of those around, through the limited & vague memories, of the few yrs participating in & observing professional theater, & the many now forgotten yrs prior in the school & college amateur theater circuit, as also from our time in Acting School from eons back, for whatever little it's worth, coming from this professional dropout-

The roots of the rot, so to say, that in my opinion, lie in the false understanding around the concept of 'Method Acting' that sprung up with noticeably high fanfare sometime in the 1970's back in the USA, & that as Gerard Depardieu once said, something along the lines of ~"corrupted the world of cinema with ideas of B-Grade greatness (or the idea of "great acting for & by dummies")".

Let's try to understand this sentence, via an analysis of the widely-regarded "natural greats" of world cinema. Both the Indian legends, Rajesh Khanna & Dilip Kumar, were well into their prime or past their prime resp, when this theory took hold on world cinema psyche. And cannot in any way be said to 've been influenced by it's influx. Yet that continue to be the biggest flag-bearers of it's ideals of "natural greatness", only at it's very zenith, and not in it's struggling nether regions. Ie Espousing the natural most impactful portrayal of diverse expression, AT TOP OF THE EMOTIONAL LADDER. This 'height' of emotion, a representation of the higher human chakras (earlier a part of just Hindu scripture, but now a universally taught & disseminated advanced human knowledge field), that believe it not, control human action & evolution through life. The higher the chakra domain or the preponderancy of one's operation, the finer yet more sensitive the experience &/or output.

And it's REACHING THIS HIGHER STAGE OR LEVEL OF, EXPERIENCE OF EMOTION OR PERCEPTION OR STIMULATION OR STIMULUS, FOR THE CHARACTER & ONESELF, that this entire 'Method (That Works) Acting' rigmarole ought be focused on. Yet a focus that continued on then & continues to be so today even, on recreating any damn emotion just for the heck of it, on 'anything that triggers a instant mass response, whatever it's quality', totally ignoring the inter-connected & infact most essential finer human experiential field of study embedded within ie being penny wise & pound foolish, in spending inordinate amounts of time & energy & resources over the carrier & seemingly nothing over the purpose & the ultimate goal.

Let's highlight this via few anecdotal illustrations from times of the greatest of greats:

1. Rajesh Khanna, inarguably the most naturally gifted method actor of all time, for the sheer volume & frequency & very high range of his highest imaginable quality work, churning out 6 films on avg per yr, thru his 25-30 yr lead career, would at times display a major handicap in lip-syncing few songs or dancing to them! Recalls Seema Deo, his co-star from 'Anand', on how Kaka could just never remember the lyrics from this film's songs, so finally came up with the trick of writing down every different line of the lyrics on big paper sheets, positioned at different places behind the camera per his direction, so could gaze at them during the shot & perform them with the best feel & effect! Reena Roy, his regular 80's co-star too recalls Kaka's handicap at not being able to do many dance movements, howsoever physically easy they were, for 'lack of proper feel from within to instigate those actions', for which he would come up with howlarious tricks of placing spot boys at different spots behind the camera, shouting out the funniest emotional interpretations to those lines & movements, that somehow worked for him, in instigating the desired dance steps!

2. Marlon Brando, though more famous for his darker roles, had a similar problem, for which reportedly too adopted similar above methods.

3. Dilip Kumar had another problem in not being satisfied with attaining the desired 'satisfactory naturalness' for his dialogues, often landing up inaudably mumbling his lines in btwn, taking avg 25 takes per line/shot all career, to get right!

4. Depardieu, further deep into this pit, just couldn't get himself to say certain few lines of written scripts,at all,ever! Fed up with which, had to take to writing as parallel occupation, to let out all on paper, he just couldn't get himself to physically say!

Point of blog being, to h/l how the method is a mere petty means, while understanding the dimension & depth of subject is the key.

Steps to make Papaya kuch shahi andaz mein:

Clean, peel and grate the papaya. Squeeze out its water.Mash the potatoes, paneer nicely and Add grated papaya to it..

Add salt and black pepper to it. Grease your clean palms and make lemon size balls, flatten them and stuff, chopped raisins and cashews in it..

Roll them again, keeping in mind, no cracks are formed. Else they might break in oil. Fry each of them on medium heat.

Gravy – Soak 5-6 cashews in little warm milk After 5 minutes, churn them in mixy to form a fine paste, keep aside..

Meanwhile, take a kadhai and add oil, finely chopped onion, ginger garlic paste and cook them on medium flame, till they turn pink..

Add in tomato puree, salt, kashmiri laal mirch, haldi powder, coriander powder, cook it till it leaves it side. Switch off the gas, cool the gravy.

When it is cooled down, put it in mixie jar and give it a nice churn. Pour it again in kadhai, add little water to it, make thick gravy consistency. After one boil, add in cashew paste, kasoori methi, kewra essence, honey, add one teaspoon cream to it. Switch off the gas.

While serving, warm your koftas in microwave and pour in hot gravy, on top of it. Garnish it with elaici, powder, garam masala powder, chopped coriander and few drops of cream.Serve it with your fav bread like lachha parantha or naan! Happy feasting!.

Notes: Clean the papaya, nicely and remove the white seeds and thin white layer from inside, before grating Koftas are very soft, so do not boil it in the gravy for too long..

REMEMBERING KISHORE DA

In Mumbai travelling to office by local train is the best option to reach office in time but the travel can be made enjoyable by different ways. In local train we find people watching serials, movies, listening to music in their mobiles.

Being a great fan of Kishore Kumar, I listen to his songs , watch videos in You tube while travelling from Borivali to Churchgate and return. What an evocative voice he had, it is un-matched even today. Kishore Kumar… whom we fondly call as Kishore Da was an extraordinary person. He was an actor, playback singer, music director, lyricist, film director, producer, screenwriter. He was one the most popular singer who was very versatile and could sing all types of songs, be it a peppy number, romantic song or a serious song. He was very famous for his yodeling.

When we talk of Kishore Kumar, what comes to mind is an image of a person who is happy, fun loving. He is most famous for marrying 4 times. A lot has been written about his eccentric nature and above all he was a miser and had lot of encounters with Income Tax Dept., and the list goes on.... these information are either heard in programs which has been attended by me or in magazines or information available in internet.

While returning home from office on Friday, I happened to watch his song Nakhrewali ….. from the movie New Delhi. He has sung the song, danced , acted. What an expression he had , so spontaneous…. mind blowing performance. A very modern song of those black and white days.

The facts which we know about Kishore Kumar is that he was from Khandwa. His original name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly. He came to Mumbai with his brother Kishore Kumar. Though he initially acted in films later on became a very famous singer. He has won Film Fare awards 8 times. ‘ Roop Tera Mastana’ from Aradhna being first in 1970. He has been nominated 19 times for Film Fare awards. The entire list is available in Wikipedia.

The height of his eccentric nature can be imagined by hearing the fact that he had made the movie ‘ Chalti ka naam Gaadi ‘ to show loss in his income and save tax. This movie turned out to be a super hit. Here again the memorable songs are loved even today to name a few… ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si, paanch rupaiya bara aana, hum the woh thi …

Even today his songs change the mood of the person listening it. Kishore Kumar had to struggle a lot initially to become famous like any other normal person. When he got award for the movie ‘ Aradhna’ he was 39 years old.

I read in an article that Kishore Kumar did not learn classical music. But the passion he had for music never made this a handicap for him. He has sung songs like ‘ mere naina savan bhado’ , ‘ khilte hein gul yahan’, ‘ payal wali dekhna’ ‘ jab koi kangna bole’ which are based on classical ragas with ease.

We have grown up listening to this powerful voice. Name an occasion and a song of Kishore Kumar is there to fit the same. Remembering Kishore Kumar will be complete in true sense when Rajesh Khanna is also remembered. The movie ‘ Aradhana ‘ was the birth of a Super Star ( Rajesh Khanna) and Super Singer ( Kishore Kumar).

We all know that music is a very important part of our lives and thanks to singers like Kishore Kumar who makes the songs worth listening and humming even after so many decades.

In fact it can be said that music is the only medicine the heart and soul needs.
