I had to replace the front wheel bearing and cv axle on my Denali the other day. The wheel bearing was breaking apart and making a loud grinding noise. Glad this one is done. Now on to the other side...

Solving the Mystery of BMW Clicking Noises When Starting
So, your BMW is making an odd clicking noise when you try to start it…
Tumblr media
We understand how bothersome the introduction of such a bizarre noise can be. This blog post's only goal is to assist you in identifying the problem so that an expensive repair can be avoided. So, we respectfully suggest that you read this article all the way through.
The Mechanism of Engine Start: A Brief Intro
It's crucial that you comprehend the fundamentals of the starting process before you go into some of the well-known causes of clicking noises that emerge when you try to start the engine. There are several subtle differences between starting a BMW with an automatic transmission and a BMW with a manual transmission.
In the first scenario, shifting the car into neutral is the first step toward starting the engine. Next, you need to hit the clutch and brake pedals, and lastly, the start button. In case number two, you will need to depress the brake before pressing the start button in order to initiate the engine.
A sequence of events takes place in order to start the engine when the start button is pressed. The engine is sparked into life by the combined effort of the ignition system, gasoline supply system, and starter motor. The task of reviving the car engine will be extremely difficult if there is a problem with any of these systems.
Therefore, if the engine of your BMW makes a clicking sound when the ignition button is pressed rather than starting, it may be because one of the aforementioned components is failing to perform its assigned function. The following discussion sheds light on some of the most common reasons why your BMW engine may begin to make a clicking noise when you push the start button.
BMW Won’t Start But Makes A Clicking Noise? Here’s why
Reason #1- Defective starter
A faulty starter is one reason—possibly the most plausible one—for the clicking noise that appears when attempting to start the engine. The starter is essential for starting the car engine. On receiving the signal it connects to the flywheel and turns the engine so that an adequate amount of air gets into the engine and it starts operating independently. Its inability to perform as designed will make it difficult for the engine to start which in turn may result in the emergence of a strange clicking noise.
Reason #2- Weak battery
It takes a significant quantity of electric energy to breathe life into an automobile engine. Almost every component involved in igniting an automobile engine, including the ignition system and starter motor, depends on electricity to function. Should the battery weaken, it will not be able to supply the energy needed for the ignition process. When there isn't enough power left for the starter motor and other crucial ignition components, the engine struggles to start. And, yes… a strange clicking noise may emerge.
Reason #3- Defective alternator
The alternator is the part that drives the electrical system of your car. Its dysfunction will drastically lower the efficiency of your car's electrical system, whether it's due to a bad connector or something else. And, yes… if you don't act quickly, it could lead to a variety of electrical problems, such as difficulties starting. When attempting to start the engine, this could potentially be a factor in the unusual clicking sound coming from the engine compartment. Something terrible could happen if you don't take immediate action.
Reason #4- Engine issue
It is not always the case that a weak battery or starter motor is the cause of your engine's difficulties starting. This could be the result of a significant technical issue with the engine. To avoid costly repairs and significant engine problems, it is advisable to take your BMW to the closest service center for diagnosis and repair. The engine is the most expensive component of your car, therefore it's critical to ensure its upkeep if you don't want to have to pay for pricey repairs down the road.
Summing Up
If you hear a peculiar clicking noise coming from your BMW's engine compartment when you press the ignition button, it is a symptom of trouble and should not be ignored. Because leaving such a problem untreated can lead to costly repairs in the future.

Tracked down a starter connector for my neighbor today, and it occurred to me this might be a useful thing to tell people about.
If an electrical connector on your car breaks, lots of shops won't have access to the parts to rebuild or replace just the connector. I've had parts stores have no listings for any wiring bits, and dealerships for some brands quote me a whole harness (usually over a grand just for the part) for a broken connector.
Wreckers, on the other hand, don't usually care about whole harnesses, because they're too hard to take out in one piece.
So if you need a connector replaced, see if you can find a wrecking yard who's willing to cut out the one you need with a few inches of wire attached for you. Usually they're only charging you for the time it takes to go get it, since they don't usually save them.
Bonus points if you know a thing or two about cars and know what you're looking for, because usually wreckers I've worked with just send me out with an apprentice to cut it out myself. That way I get exactly what I'm looking for and they don't have to look for it.
Anyway, this is maybe the one thing that has saved me the most money as a mechanic. Hopefully somebody here gets some mileage out of it.

POSITIVE Updates!!
Oh man I’ve got to make a more official post but a LOT has happened in the past 2.5 weeks since the accident.
First things first, I’m getting a new car! :D With the help of the ko-fi car fund I was able to put together enough for a good downpayment on a nice used car. The car market is horrendous right now, rust bucket cars with 200k miles are selling for $3-4k and anything decent is much more. I got very lucky with finding another used volvo, very similar to my old one, but better. $5.5k before taxes and tags, 139k miles, REALLY good condition. It’s a wagon, too! It’s so practical for me and just perfect in every way. It’s very easy to drive and VERY high safety rating.
After the accident I didn’t feel okay driving anything that wasn’t a subaru or another volvo. I didn’t realize until afterwards that the truck that hit me was a 5000 lb dodge ram, hitting me at speed around 30 mph. I have had a few panic attacks while my friends have been taking me to work and I already have per-disposition to paranoia. Finding this car has been a HUGE boost to my confidence. It’s getting a few cosmetic repairs done before I finalize the downpayment, but I should have it proper by the end of the week.
I couldn’t have done this without the kindness of friends and strangers who helped share the ko-fi and raised over $1,200 in donations. I can’t thank everyone enough. <3 <3
Which brings me to my second part of good news...my current job doesn’t provide a ton of hours, I work about 12-15 hours a week. Even at $18/hr (which I know I am very lucky to have that!!) I only make $225 per paycheck each week. I can’t mentally handle long shifts anymore. Anything over 5-6 hours at a time makes me want to chew my hands off. BUT. Now that I have a car, I’ve been able to look into a second part time job of a similar type, for more income.
And....I’ve got an interview today!!!! For a position with a small business that is very local, pays well, takes good care of their employees, and does SPLIT SHIFTS!! From what we talked about I would be doing a shift of cleaning (I’m a janitor/commercial cleaner) in the morning, and a second shift in the afternoon/evening! That’s PERFECT for me!! I LOVE what I do, I just can’t handle 8-9 hours trapped in one place. But this way I can keep my brain happy AND make money AND help nice folks AND keep my current very stable, very nice little job. I only go there three nights a week anyway and it does pay very well for the time invested, and I love the commute, so it’s worth it!!
I’m very antsy and having a hard time with my words but this place sounds VERY interested in having me work for them and they’re talking like I already have the job. I won’t know for certain until after 2 pm today (my friend is letting me borrow his car to get there) but I’m feeling really good about it.
It’s still not going to be easy, this IS going to be hard work and my first time taking more hours in....literally years. It’s scary but they want to hire me because they trust that I can do a good job. This type of cleaning is very independent, there is no working in a team. If you don’t do it right there’s no one to blame but you. Personally I LOVE that and I really like the quiet and self-management that comes with it. If I could do work like this forever I would. But it’s definitely a big change....I hope I can do it. But I made it this far, right?? And no way am I giving up yet!!!!
#positive#update#personal#long post#ill post pictures of the car maybe once its done#the dealer we got it from is LEGIT#there was a couple cosmetic concerns...well the biggest one is that the sunroof drain is messed up (a known problem with this year model)#the drain tubes can clog over time as they shrink#and the floor of the backseats is filling with water#aaaand the headliner is a disaster...and the radio display is broken#but the headliner needs to be removed anyway to fix the drain!! anyway they offered me a discount or asked what i would rather have done#and i said if they could fix all the problems i would take it at the listed price (which was already the plan anyway)#and so they are!!!! they do their own detailing there and sent the car out to a local automotive upholstery place to do the headlienr#VERY excited about it. its a gorgeous little car. VERY well taken care of by previous owners and in BEAUTIFUL mechanical condition#rides like a dream. and its a turbo as well O_O#ive never driven a turbo before its VERY cool but mostly what i care about is old automatics......were not really optimized for shifting#15-20 years down the line.....my old automatic volvo was AWFUL going up hills because it WOULD NOT SHIFT DOWN...#just not enough torque. but hoping the turbo will give it the Go it needs to manage the hills and mountains i like to go in#its a VERY practical little car. literally everything i could have ever dreamed of. now to finance it for the next three years....
