“Rowena, you really don’t have to worry about me. I already let Ketch know before I left that I was feeling better and I have to keep their suspicions as low as possible. Disappearing wouldn’t help my case.” I say while tidying up the witch’s living room and packing my go bag and backpack.
“I am well aware of the terminal paranoia that runs in Hunter’s DNA, dear,” she says with a chuckle, “I am also aware that gaining Hunter’s trust is hard, but maintaining it is impossible.”
I know she is looking out for me, but honestly, I was hoping for some blind optimism to balance out the anxiety. “Trust me, I remember how long it took for Ketch and Mick to trust me and actually work with me regularly. I can’t lose that, Ro.” I say turning my back on her to continue packing. I hear her shoes click on the floor and stop right behind me.
“Y/n,” she says softly, “turn around and look at me, please.” I sigh and turn to look Rowena in the eyes. She gently takes my hands in hers and continues, “I know that you are a very capable and strong Hunter. And I’m sure those boys know it too, but promise me you will call if something doesn’t feel right or even to check in every few days so I know you’re okay.”
“I promise I will either call you or Crowley if something feels off.” Rowena visibly relaxes and gives my hands a quick squeeze.
“Speaking of my son, he told me this morning before you got up that he might have found some demons who might know of a way that could keep you more hidden from other supernatural beings.” she says, pulling me into a tight hug.
“Tell him thank you from me whenever you talk with him. At least now I have something to tell Sam and Dean that you guys are working on some theories.” I shiver with nervous energy considering the thousands of possibilities of how these guys will react since I’ve been gone.
“Yes. Now you better get going, it’s a long drive back to Dubuque.” Rowena smiles and walks me to the front door after picking up my backpack for me. I sling my go-bag over my right shoulder and grab my backpack from Rowena. She gives a quick kiss on the cheek goodbye and closes her front door.
************************************************************************
The entire drive back to Dubuque I tried to do some calming breathing exercises to keep my anxiety in check, although I’m unsure that breathing exercises will be any match against warranted suspicions. Driving into the bare parking lot I park next to Baby and Ketch’s car on each side of myself.
“At least I know everyone is here and I only have to face them once.” I assure myself while taking my duffle bag out of the back of my truck along with my backpack that I sling over my right shoulder, closing the car door afterward. I take a deep breath and walk in the direction of room number 63. I called Ketch this morning after leaving Ro’s apartment to make sure they hadn’t changed hotels or rooms yet.
As I get closer to the room, I can hear the boys talking quietly inside and shuffling papers around. I take another deep breath and knock three times on the faded wooden door. I stick the door three times and take a small step back, nervously readjusting my backpack.
I hear shuffling as footsteps draw nearer to the door, they pause and forcefully open the door. Ketch stands before me with a tired smile on his face. I let out a sigh of relief and give him a hug.
“It’s so good to see you, y/n. How are you feeling?” Ketch asks, returning my hug and stepping aside for me to enter. I give a tight-lipped smile to everyone else in the room. Dean and Gabe both stare daggers while Sam is busy on his laptop on the bed furthest from the door.
“Glad to see you too, Ketch. I’m feeling much better, just trying to take it easy. Where’s Castiel and Mick?” I respond, walking inside and setting my backpack and duffle bag on the floor next to the small table. I take a seat on one of the chairs, Dean occupying the other, leaning back with his arms crossed.
Sam sighs saying, “They both went out to try and get some information.” I wait for him to elaborate more, or even for anyone to give me an update but no one speaks up. I glance around the room; no one has changed their positions since I walked in. The only movement is Sam’s keystrokes and Ketch quietly shutting and locking the door.
“What kind of information? Please tell me you guys have more of a lead than I do.” I ask, hoping to convince them to spill a little. Not just for my own safety, but if I’m going to be a part of this hunt I need to know what’s going on.
Gabriel snorts and shakes his head, “Important information that might be a lead depending on what Cas and Mick find out.” Dean says, still staring at me with either anger or distrust. Knowing him, probably a dangerous mix of both. I decide to stare back, plastering a confused look on my face trying to hide the frustration. I know exactly what they are trying to do, keeping me in the dark so they can gather information that I can only assume is against me.
Ketch stands behind me and places his hands on my shoulders. I'm sure he’s trying to calm me down and back off from this stare-down with Dean, but I’m lost as to how going along with this manipulation will benefit me.
“Yeah, I assumed that Dean. What would be helpful to know is maybe where they went, or possibly what information they’re finding to investigate a theory.” Sam’s typing stopped. I can feel everyone’s eyes on me and Dean as I wait for the dam to break on me.
Ketch’s hands tighten slightly as Dean leans forward and opens his mouth to speak when there is a loud knock at the door.
Ketch lets go of me and opens the door, the tension in the room that was mounting seems to dissipate slightly with this distraction. I look down at my lap and play with my hands, luckily the guys have all stopped watching me and are looking at the people at the door.
“Y/n! We weren’t expecting you for another hour! Are you feeling better I hope?” Mick says gently holding my biceps, as I stand to greet him. He looks at me as though he’s expecting me to pass out any second.
I chuckle at his excitement, “I’m feeling much better, haven’t passed out at all and I’ve been very careful.” “What did he mean that they weren’t expecting me for another hour?” Before I could question what he meant by not expecting me for an hour, Castiel walks into the room holding a bloody angel blade.
“What happened to you bro?” Gabe asks the angel. Castiel then glances over to me and back to his brother, his classic confused look on his face. Mick slowly lets his arms drop back to his sides. I feel my phone then begin to vibrate with an incoming call.
I pick up, “Hey Rowena! What’s up?” I ask cheerfully.
“Just checking up on you my dear, I’m sure they’re all putting you through the wringer right now.” I can tell she is worried about me, and I don’t like that the Hunters and angels are still staring at me.
“Not too bad, a bit tiring but that’s what I was expecting,” I say standing up and exiting the room. I’d rather not add more suspicions but I don’t have enough energy to talk in riddles around them. “I’m outside now, and yes they haven’t told me a thing yet.”
Rowena sighs and remains silent for a moment. “Are you doing okay with that? I know you value your friendships with Mick and Ketch the most. How are they treating you?”
“I mean, they were both very kind and excited to see me, but Mick and Ketch won’t say anything either. Castiel and Mick just got back from what Dean called getting ‘important information that might be a lead depending on what they find out’,” Rowena laughs quietly, “if I’m still on this hunt, how can I be of any use while being left in the dark?” I know I sound like a whiny child but it’s just so frustrating, plus Ro is a very good listener.
“Well, you could always try saying that to them?” I snort and shake my head at her suggestion. “It would also help put them at ease and understand if you’re acting a bit off, it’s because you were left behind and need to play catch-up in order to stay useful and not put yourself in danger on accident.”
“I guess I’m just feeling guilty about hiding what I know and what Crowley is looking into for me. I want them to trust me and to stay in this hunt, but I feel like none of them will trust me again no matter what I say or do.”
“The only thing I would tell you, my dear, is to be very guarded. Right now they all perceive you to be a threat. Don’t do or say anything that could strengthen those suspicions or you’ll be fighting an even worse uphill battle.” I wish there is more that she could tell me, it’s smart advice, it just makes me even more apprehensive about my decision to return to the case.
“Yeah, don’t worry, I'll be careful. I’ll try and call later depending on how much progress we make.”
“Alrighty, take care of those boys now.” I laugh at her comment and hang up, placing my phone back in my jeans pocket.
“Feeling guilty, huh?” I spin around with Gabriel standing a few feet away. Of course, it had to be Gabe who followed me out, couldn’t have been literally anyone else.
“So what if I am?” I challenge. I don’t think this will earn me any cooperation points with them, but maybe it will appear like I’m not hiding as big a secret. “You’re really telling me Sam and Dean don’t hold guilt about past actions?”
His whiskey eyes burned holes through mine, fists clenched at his sides almost shaking with anger. He takes a step toward me, and I take one back, fearful of what the tortured angel might do.
“I’m sure Sam and Dean have messed up plenty and are still living in the past. That doesn’t change the fact you told that witch friend of yours that you feel guilty because you’re hiding something about this hunt. Wonder what kind of super secret information you have that we won’t trust you?” He finished with a threatening head tilt, almost daring me to disagree.
Sam walks out, “You guys okay out here?”
Gabriel looks over his shoulder to look at Sam, “Oh lay off, Moose. I was checking up on your new best friend, y/n, and heard a very interesting conversation she was having with your witchy girlfriend.” Sam sighs heavily and shakes his head at Gabe's antics.
The angel turns to look at me again with fiery eyes again. I shrug at Sam and Gabe scoffs saying, “Don’t play the innocent card with Sammy here after trying to pull the confident, guilt-stricken hunter card with me.”
“You haven’t even given me two seconds to explain what we were talking about!” I interrupt what I assume was going to become another veiled threat, “She told me to update her once we got a bit more settled to make sure I’m feeling okay, and she is worried you are going to try to kill me or connect me to Asmodeus again.” I’m already in a hole with Gabe catching me airing out my dirty laundry, might as well get a shovel to make it look like I was digging a well and not my own grave.
“Fat chance!” Gabe exclaims, taking a few quick steps in my direction again. Sam must have seen the uneasiness on my face and took a few long strides and got between me and Gabriel.
He puts his hands up to block Gabe from nearing me, “How about we all go inside and talk about this with everyone? You can say your piece, y/n says hers, and we can decide what to do as a group to catch this sonofabitch faster.” Gabe stares up at Sam, and they seem to have another silent conversation. “What the hell is with these guys and reading each other’s minds?”
Gabriel huffs and saunters back to the motel door and opens it, glancing back at me behind Sam. “Ladies first,” he says with an exaggerated arm sweep toward the now open door.
I roll my eyes and brush past Sam back into the room, taking my previous seat at the small table, though I notice Dean has since taken Sam’s spot on one of the beds and Gabe has taken to standing right beside me, blocking my view to Mick and Ketch huddled around various weapons and herbs. He is also pointedly blocking the door, locking it shortly after Sam re-entered the room. I think he rolls his eyes at Gabe who rolls his eyes back. Sam walks over to his brother to take his laptop back and sit at the table across from me.
“So, Gabe,” Sam breaks the silence, causing the other men to cease their movements, “why don’t you start with why you were snooping on y/n’s phone call, and then y/n,” he states glancing at me, “you can say what you were talking about on that phone call with Rowena.” I nod and try to look around Gabriel to see Ketch or Mick, but the stubborn angel purposefully moves in front of my line of sight.
“First of all, Moose, not snooping.” I scoff, immediately regretting that choice with a warning look from Sam, “I was actually going to make sure she didn’t pass out or something since she was by herself.”
“Ever heard of privacy, wings?” I snap, another look from Sam shuts me up again.
“I am aware of that, smartass. I overheard y/n telling Rowena how guilty she feels at hiding something from us because she’s too scared we’ll see her differently and doesn’t want to tell us.” I know this guy has been around for thousands of years, but how is it possible he never actually grew up!
“I feel guilty because when I was with Rowena and Crowley I did some research cross-referencing weather patterns, crop failures, cow slaughters, the basic demon signs,” I pause, seeing how frustrated Gabriel was getting since I was speaking calmly and adding more detail. I guess he wanted me to admit I’m being sneaky because I have a huge secret.
“I noticed that there have been some of these demonic signs have been bouncing around between Manchester, Iowa, Platteville, Wisconsin, and Freeport, Illinois for the past twenty to thirty years,” I explain, taking out my computer to show the map I had drawn up with different colors for each demonic sign. I scroll through about ten maps showing different changes every other year as the Hunters and Angels crowd around me.
“While this is really impressive, y/n,” Mick states, “what does this have to do with your guilt Gabriel mentioned? You already gave Ketch a synopsis of what your research yielded.” Dean groans at Mick’s big words and strides back to the bed, flopping onto it.
I smile and continue, “While I told Ketch about my research I didn’t say what Crowley found out about these cities and why they didn’t show up in Rowena’s original spell. And he made me promise-”
“Original spell?” Gabriel asks, squinting at me.
I pause, not knowing what he’s talking about. “Yeah, the original spell. What about it?”
Dean sits up from his relaxed position and tries to stare me down for the second time today. The rest of the guys also visibly tune in to the conversation more and are eyeing Gabe and me.
“You saying Rowena’s original spell implies there were more spells she performed. I know she didn’t tell us about these spells, the Brits have never met her, Gabe and Cas don’t communicate with her regularly, so when exactly did she test out other spells?” Sam asks.
“She seriously did this spell only once with you guys?” Dean is still staring and Sam merely nods. “Ro’s losing her touch then, I asked for her to do the spell again on a smaller map to be sure it was for Dubuque and not a smaller town nearby or anything. And the spell again showed Dubuque.” Sam glances at Gabriel who is doing that stupid telepathic trash with Dean, at least it got him to quit staring at me. Technically it was only a white lie since the map wasn’t of Dubuque, but we did do the same spell again to double-check where the nephidemon is.
“Anyway,” I continue, “Crowley made me promise to not tell you guys that he has a demon with a number of connections has randomly gone off the radar for the past ten years. He wanted to see if this demon had anything to do with Asmodeus or his kid without y’all going in guns blazing and ruining a possible lead.” Everyone in the room aside from Gabriel has relaxed a bit and no longer seems to want me dead.
“So, why again do you feel guilty?” Sam pushes, “It’s not like Crowley has kept his inside demon bureaucracy crap hidden before to keep him as King.”
“Why does Sam have to always be so damn smart and read into everything. I was honestly hoping they might turn suspicions onto Crowley or this made-up demon but no, Sam has to use that Stanford brain.”
“Well, I assumed you would want to know anything I found out that had to do with anything demonic. I felt guilty that I was hiding this because this demon could end up being a big lead if Crowley can find her alive.” The tension that had built previously finally died down enough for me to breathe. Gabriel must have sensed it too and stepped away from me a bit so I can actually see Mick and Ketch by the bed closest to the door.
I’m thankful for the few minutes of silence to collect my thoughts and calm my breathing. I’ll have to remember to update Crowley and Rowena about all the lies I just said, I can’t have either of them getting shot in any cross-fire. Both have been extremely understanding and really put their lives and relationships with the Hunters on the line for me.
Unfortunately, the silence doesn’t last nearly as long as I would like when Castiel speaks up, “What should we do now?” Dean gives the angel a shrug and the rest of us glance between The Brits and Dean. Gabriel is still sulking by the door with his arms crossed, playing with some grooves in the floorboards with his feet.
“Don’t you boys have a Men of Letters Bunker back in Kansas?” Ketch questions, “Those places are filled with weapons, books, spells, anything we could think to need to start seriously going after Asmodeus or his child.”
Everyone agrees and we all pack up whatever gear we brought with us and file outside the motel door towards the parking lot. Dean goes to return their room keys as Sam loads his and his brothers’ bags into Baby, Ketch does the same with his and Mick’s bags.
“Y/n, you should probably ride with us. No offense to your truck but I doubt it would make the drive to Kansas, let alone back here.” Mick says, a bit shy while holding out his hands for my duffle bag and backpack.
“I didn’t even think about that honestly, I’m sure it’s fine to leave it here and I hate long drives alone,” I say with a smile as I hand him my gear.
Dean returns and takes the keys from Sam as they get into the front seats, and the angels climb into the back. I let out a quick sigh of relief that Gabriel chose to ride with his brother and the Winchesters, I don’t think I could handle hours being stuck in a car with him and his suspicious attitude. Ketch and Mick get into the front seats with Ketch driving and Mick sitting passenger side, leaving me to sit in the middle seat in the back so I can still talk to both of them.
”Y/n, you do realize I know when you’re lying right?” Ketch says, looking back at me with the rearview mirror.
I scrunch my nose in confusion and ask, “I know you’ve been trying to convince me I have a tell or something for years, but I doubt that based on how often I beat you in poker.”
Ketch chuckles and Mick casts a smirk my way. “That’s exactly what I’m talking about. You do have a tell and no, I will never tell you because where’s the fun in that?” I roll my eyes and lightly smack his arm, “when you said that Crowley was looking into that demon that disappeared, your tell happened. Everything else seemed truthful, but you do know the truth will come to light sooner than you want.”
It almost sounds like a warning. I really need to try to bribe Mick to tell me about my supposed tell sometime, “Whatever you are hiding, you need to be straight with us.” Mick says, fidgeting with his collar. I might have a lying tell, but Mick messing with his cufflinks or shirt collar is certainly his nervous tell.
“I appreciate what you guys are saying, and you don’t have to worry that much about me. I’ll be okay.” I look at them through the rearview mirror, hoping to portray honesty because I truly want to believe that I will be okay through this whole thing.
“Anything you’re hiding, y/n, you either need to right it, tell us, or don’t let it bite you in the ass,” Ketch says as silence fills the car aside from faint radio music. He’s one-hundred percent right and I know it, and I’m unsure which of the three options will cause the least amount of relationship setbacks and Gabriel’s level of hatred directed at me and my father.
“No, I can’t afford to relate myself to that monster. I never have been and never will be like that, I can’t let myself.”

Rowena & Crowley back the wrong horse, over and over and over...
Everyone remembers Rowena's tragic clinging to Lucifer in season 11, and how it ended up for her. Upon learning she's the only one that can put him back in the cage, Lucifer pragmatically snaps her neck--a form of cold, indifferent insurance:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, the tragedy of Rowena's desire to have security. Rowena wanted to be loved and protected by Fergus's father. She wanted to be appreciated and protected by Lucifer.
Crowley remarks that she's always looking for the biggest, baddest beast in the room to hide behind.
///
In 11x23 Alpha and Omega, we see Rowena cozying up to her newest target, Chuck:
ROWENA: [Crowley mocks her as she speaks] Charles, I'll put the kettle on. My mom always said, there's nothing a nice wee cup of tea can't fix.
...
CROWLEY: It's what she does. Find someone with power...cozies up...digs the claws in. [As he’s talking, Crowley walks over to a cabinet, opens a door and takes out a bottle of Craig] CHUCK: Hmm. Yeah, well, I'm not helping anyone right now, obviously. She's been...nice. CROWLEY: For now.
Funny sidenote: As Rowena moves in on Chuck, getting sweet on him, she starts calling him "Charles," a little nugget for how she'll later call Sam "Samuel," and Cas, "Hello, Castiel."
///
Ahem. Anyway. The thing is, that yes, Rowena totally does this. We can't really blame her when we look at the tragic happenstances of her life. During the course of the series, we see her make numerous moves to gain favor will powerful beings:
SEASON 10
We see her volleying to make Crowley sit upon a stronger, more secure throne.
SEASON 11
We see her cozying up to Lucifer and getting killed for her trouble.
Next, we see her coming back from the dead to move in on Amara.
She's kind of playing both sides, but she gets sweet on Amara here: "Oh, I can be useful...And even if it is born out of my own self-interest, I-- I care about you. I'm someone you can talk with. Confide in. Have you... have you ever had that? Oh, you don't have to be (alone), darlin'!"
Then, as I mentioned above, she cozies up to Chuck, and Crowley snarls many a nasty word about her.
SEASON 12
We find Rowena trying to date rich men and lying about her background, painting herself as a posh, well-to-do ballerina.
In an abrupt about-face to insulting Cas (she called him a fish in season 10), we see that Rowena has flipped on her appraisal of him.
Now, Castiel is super hot. He's "the handsome, strong angel," an ideal partner/protector. So, she hits on him. A lot.
Despite her memory of "Cas's face" as Lucifer snapped her neck, her dogged attraction to Cas blooms sometime in season 12.
Perhaps, it's when she and Cas and Fergus are hunting Lucifer together.
(In the same time frame, Crowley is also hanging off Cas's arm, keeping him company, trying to be oddly "cutesy," singing in the car, etc. It's...hilarious. You get the mental picture of them both trying their hardest to get his attention.)
SEASON 13
Season 13 brings us her library tryst with Gabriel.
She says she's motivated by trying to heal his wounded virility/grace/pride, but it's at least partially about his status as an archangel.
And of course, there's security in Sam(uel), but it's all twisted up with him being her executioner, not just her protector.
But in being her "destiny," he also functions as her security. It's very complex. (And kinda sexy.)
SEASON 14
Rowena will hit on Cas as later as season 14's Ouroboros, saying his full name in a similar coo to how she says, "Charles and Samuel." -> "Hello, Castiel."
Castiel, for his part, tends to be a little flustered by her, straightening up and saying, "Hello," back.
SEASON 15
Finally, in season 15, somewhat hilariously, Rowena moves in on Arthur Ketch.
But it's a little different this time, reflecting a more confident, in-control, and emotionally integrated Rowena.
She seems to be genuinely interested in him for his wry, science-loving personality. They banter.
She and Ketch mutually harass Dean for details about the other, like schoolyard crushes.
They had a battle connection in the past, have fought together and helped one another re: resurrection spells, but it is only now that they’re healthy and healed that they can actually see each other.
Rowena throws Dean a breathless, thankful look when he saves Ketch (for her).
She’s reformed, Ketch is reformed. It’s heartbreaking just how excited she is about him. He instills a her hope in her, for the future. (But he won’t sell out his friends. He dies. She won’t let the world die, so she dies, too.)
///
But Crowley does the same friggin' thing, doesn't he? He is so her child, a tragic mini-Rowena, despite his efforts to look like a big, bad Hell-king. 💔
SEASON 5
When we meet him, we see him backing the Winchesters re:the Colt.
In his early appearance, he does this because he thinks Lucifer is going to wipe out demon-kind.
That gamble goes okay for Crowley, mostly.
SEASON 6
Sometime in this timeframe, he is given the role of Hell-king as a consolation prize, by Ramiel, prince of Hell, who honestly doesn't give a fuck.
In season 6, Crowley backs Castiel. Cas's got magnetism and sex appeal.
As the original "angel's angel" in Heaven, he's a strong frontrunner in Heaven's Civil War simply by popularity alone. So, Cas is the horse Crowley decides to bet on.
Then, Cas turns out to be duplicitous, cunning, and too devoted to his human family to be controlled. He’s way more than Crowley can handle.
There are glimmers of this power imbalance, when Cas on occasion has had enough of Crowley's innuendo-laden threats, like when Cas snaps and crushes him into a wall, for example. But on the whole, Crowley ignores this. It's his tragic hubris.
Eventually, Cas overwhelms him and seizes power, and the whole thing turns out to be a frightening blow to his position.
So, Crowley goes running to his brother Raphael, which is another bad gamble, as Castiel straight-up kills him, and Crowley is forced to flee and go into hiding.
SEASON 7-8
In seasons 7-8, Crowley vies for control of the prophet Kevin, torturing and killing those around him.
He makes sure to kill Meg, who is in his mind a Lucifer loyalist (she's actually a Castiel loyalist at this point, but the Lucifer label sticks).
SEASON 9
In season 9, Crowley arranges a series of events to allow him to dangle Dean to Cain in a bid to transform Dean and destroy Abbadon, the newest threat to his position.
(Crowley won't suggest taking the mark on his own; he won't risk his own neck.) Afterwards, he scoops Dean up, like spoils of war, a dark parallel to the pimp-demon in Girls, Girls, Girls (and Randy).
SEASON 10
In season 10, this bites him in the ass, too.
Demon Dean proves too much to handle, a liability on the job, as he refuses to perform the cold, capitalistic mercenary duties of Hell.
"The little prat’s bad for business. He’s uncontrollable. Must be the Mark."
In a scene similar to Cas crunching Crowley into a wall, Dean throws Crowley down. Demon Dean will not be cowed by Crowley, and he will not be a sidekick, little bitch, or Queen to be "controlled."
So, Crowley goes running to his brother, Sam. He “sells him out" to Sam.
And Crowley goes running to revive Castiel again, to deal with the problem-that-solved-his-original-Abbadon-problem.
And around and around Crowley goes.
Despite everything, Crowley softens to Dean. Crowley's a little bit human now, and it shows. As he softens, his mother appears, making things so much more complicated.
SEASON 11
Crowley tries to muster up the glory of his former evil self--he kills a bunch of swingers for no reason.
Then, Crowley sees a new opportunity to sway a powerful being, and we get Crowley unsuccessfully trying to mold Amara as his newest weapon of mass destruction.
Like with Demon Dean, he strikes fast to scoop her up when she's “vulnerable” and "new,” to get her under his sphere of influence.
Then, it goes badly, as this always does for Crowley. Amara breaks Uncle Crowley's arm and runs away.
In this season, Crowley goes to bat for Cas again, trying to detach him from Lucifer and screeching angrily at Cas as Lucifer beats Crowley up.
In fact, in that brief moment before Crowley even goes to bat, he's actually smiling at Dean and Cas as they reunite, as Dean says, “Cas, we don't have a whole lot of time, okay?"
Crowley is a softie. Cas is his kinda-friend, and Crowley wants Dean to be happy. Crowley's changed.
At the end of the season, we briefly see Crowley complaining about Rowena cozying up to Chuck, while he moves to cozy up to Billie. (Really, Crowley? Stop doing the thing that gets you burned, man.)
SEASON 12
Enter season 12, and Crowley works with his mom again. He and Rowena form an uneasy alliance, and both begin to see family in a slightly new light.
They trust each other a little more, and they hurt each other to try and solve their mutual pain re: Oskar and Gavin.
Hilariously, they both start seeing Castiel in a new light this season. It's like, in watching his devotion and chivalry to his family, and as their understanding of family shifts, they've mutually decided that he's dependable and thus desireable. (The "blue-collar, family-oriented soldier.")
So yeah, season 12 finds Crowley cozying up to Castiel again in order to fight Lucfier--with Crowley being overly friendly and flirty and sing-song to the point that Cas just might bash his own head in.
(In this same timeframe, Rowena warms to Cas, so you have this implication that they're both hanging off his arms adoringly, and he is tired as fuck of dealing with them. I'm sure Cas's tendency to get a little flustered and sweet with Rowena is something that would drive Crowley insane on multiple levels.)
Crowley even risks his life for Cas against Vince!Lucifer. (He wants Cas to be his friend so badly in this era, oof.)
Then, he saves Cas against Ramiel, thanks in large part to his bond with Dean, and Dean thanks him for it.
Crowley, like Rowena, will take any form love. Any friendship. Any comradery. Even scraps. They've got the same neurosis.
Anyway, in season 12 we also have the team-up of the century, where Crowley works with his mother to send Lucifer back to the cage. Victory!
And Crowley has another fatal misstep. His last one ever, perhaps. He thinks, yet again, that he can outsmart another overpowered beast in order to buy his own security.
And so, he locks Lucifer in Nick's body, Ma'lak box-like, and tries to out-bark and out-dominate him.
Horribly, Lucifer doesn't even appear that upset. Horribly, even when he's being humiliated, the demons under Crowley flock to Lucifer. (It's not fair!)
Lucifer even seems quietly amused, like he's waiting for his moment to strike, just as Cas behaved in season 6, quietly tolerating Crowley's goading because he was not actually threatened by him.
(Crowley is no Azazel or Dagon or Ramiel or even Asmodeus.)
And it's fatal. It goes badly. Crowley's gleeful crowing of brains-versus-brawn blows up in his face.
He escapes by the skin of his teeth, and goes running, tail tucked, to tell the Winchesters what he's wrought.
Sam and Dean are horrified, realizing that Jack, Kelly, and Cas are in danger, and so they speed towards them in hopes of warning them in time.
Crowley seems a little hysterical and fatalistic, deciding to back the Winchesters one last time, because, "life is meaningless," and "what's the point of it all."
Crowley lost everything for a job he hated, so he commits suicide, because he's tired and worn down.
He has become like Raphael, "we just want it to be over."
Crowley falls to nihilism.
And Rowena despairs. 💔💔💔

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"ELLEN!!" Dean boomed out as he burst through the door. "A round of your finest brews for the returning crew of The Black Diamond!" he bellowed enthusiastically.
Ellen Harvelle smiled and shook her head before coming out from behind the bar to give the returning crew a welcoming hug. Her daughter, Jo, accompanied Captain Dean, as did Sam, Jessica, and a few of the other crew members.
Partway through the greetings, Ellen's eyes landed on someone she hadn't seen before. Among the group was a strikingly gorgeous woman with warm, brown eyes and whose strawberry-blond hair was held in place by a French braid. Her eyes followed the woman trailing after Dean, hand-on-hand, on their way to the corner table.
Jo rounded the corner of the counter to help her mother with the drink order. Every once in a while her eyes shifted, only to cast a glare at the woman sitting next to Dean at his table. This did not escape her mother's notice, so when the last pint glass was filled, Ellen walked over to Jo.
"Who's the lady with Dean?" Ellen asked.
Jo scoffed. "She's not with Dean, Mother, she was caught stowing away on his ship, and he didn't do anything about it," she retorted.
Ellen paused, fully aware of her daughter's feelings towards The Black Diamond's captain. "Huh," she replied. "She's mighty pretty, though. She got a name?"
Jo continued to glare at the group in the corner, specifically Rhaya. "Her name is Rhaya Payton," she answered with a posh accent. "I don't know much about her, but I already don't like her. Said she ran away and ended up on Dean's boat because her stepmother arranged for her to marry some hoity-toity nobleman or something."
Ellen reached for the tray of drinks, then pulled her hands back. "Wait a minute. From Ochana? If she's the one I think she is, that's the governor's daughter. He thinks she's been kidnapped!" she exclaimed.
Before Jo could reply to her mother's revelation, Dean came up to the bar. "Hello, ladies. Came to see if I could help carry the drinks back to the table," he offered.
"You can take that tray if you want, Dean," Ellen gestured. "BUT. Before you do, who's that lady you brought in with you?" she wondered.
A soft smile crept across Dean's face. "That's Rhaya Payton from Ochana," he answered without his eyes leaving Rhaya's face.
"The governor's daughter?" Ellen asked cautiously, to which Dean nodded. "You know there's a reward for her return, don't you?"
Dean's gaze shifted to Ellen. "No, I don't know anything about that, and I'm not interested. We're only here in port long enough to re-supply. After that, I'm taking her and a skeleton crew out on a separate matter."
"I heard the reward was 50,000 gold pieces," Jo added.
"Doesn't matter about that. This other mission is worth much more than that, and it gets Rhaya out of an arranged marriage," Dean explained.
"Since when do you care about some spoiled, entitled governor's daughter and whether or not she's 'suffering' from an arranged marriage," Jo muttered.
Dean shot her an astonished look, but before he could respond, Rhaya walked up on his right side. "Hey there, can I help you, Dean?" she inquired, resting a hand on the bar top.
"Nah, I got it, sweetheart," Dean answered her with a wink, but shot a glare at Jo over his shoulder as he walked away.
She was about to follow when Jo grabbed her wrist. "You're nothing special, you know. Dean's got a girl in nearly every port from here to the Mythic Islands, don't you?" Jo taunted.
"That far, huh? It doesn't really surprise me, because the Captain is a rather charismatic man," Rhaya shrugged. "You seem to be upset about it, though."
Jo scowled then returned her face to what she hoped was a somewhat neutral mask. "Why would I be? Especially since I'm the one he comes home to in Alcaria," she grinned smugly.
But Rhaya was undeterred. "Hmm. Maybe so, but I don't recall him mentioning you during any of our 'midnight meetings' on the journey to get here," she sassed. She wrenched her wrist out of Jo's grasp and sashayed back to the table. When she sat down in her chair, Dean draped his arm across the back of her chair.
From her position behind the bar, Jo seethed with anger. To her, it seemed that she had been replaced by some governor's daughter, an outsider. She's not even his type, she inwardly raged. We've known each other for nearly forever, and no high society girl is going to take him away from me, she silently vowed.
A dark-haired man with hazel eyes approached the bar. "Excuse me, is that The Black Diamond I see in port?"
"Yeah, what about it?" Jo shot back, then paused a moment or two to calm herself. "I'm terribly sorry, how may help you?"
"I'm looking for someone who may have arrived on that ship, a newcomer to Alcaria, perhaps," the man continued.
Jo's level of suspicion went up to about 100, but still she was curious. "Perhaps, what of her?"
Gotcha. "I've been looking for her for quite some time, finally tracking her here," the man explained. "I'm a sailor on The Red Dragon, name's Arthur Ketch."
Her eyes drifted over to the corner where Dean was laughing, probably at something Rhaya had said. His arm curled tighter around her shoulders as he pulled her closer to his side. A fond expression graced his face when he gazed into her eyes. "What do you want to know?"
***
"So, Rhaya," Jessica began. "Where are you staying while you're in Alcaria?" she asked.
"She's staying in my room, of course," Dean interjected.
"Whoa, slow down, Captain," Rhaya giggled. "Haven't thought much about it. Anyone have any suggestions?"
"You could stay with us!" Jessica exclaimed. "We have a spare room, we don't mind."
"Oh, no, I couldn't do that. You haven't seen Sam in such a long time, you two should be alone. I'm sure I'll find somewhere to stay," Rhaya assured her.
"No need, because you'll be staying with me," Dean persisted.
"But Dean, your room only has one bed," Sam reminded him.
"Exactly. Rhaya can have that, and I'll sleep on the couch. Listen," he held up his hands. "You all figure out the sleeping arrangements, while I go to the Little Sailor's Room," he announced. He stood up from his chair, then wobbled a bit before regaining enough of his balance to stumble to the restroom.
"Sam, I don't want to intrude on anyone. And there's no way Dean will be comfortable sleeping on his couch, which I'm certain is too small for him," Rhaya pointed out. "Is there somewhere else I can stay in town where it's safe and where Dean won't worry?"
Jess and Sam lock eyes with each other in silent communication. "There's the Seaside Inn, towards the edge of town, that should meet your criteria. A friend of ours, Kelly Kline, runs the place, so I know you'll be safe," Sam affirmed.
"Kline? As in Jack Kline?" Rhaya asked.
"Yes, that's his mother. Wonderful woman, tough as leather, but a real sweetheart. Tell her you're a friend of ours and she'll give you the best room in the place," Jess added.
Rhaya tried but was unsuccessful in stifling a yawn. "I'd better get going if I'm going to make it there before I fall asleep," she chuckled. When Sam rose from his seat, she shook her head, so he resumed his seat. "I'll be fine, Sam. Stay here and enjoy your wife's company, I'll see if Jack will escort me to the inn."
"Are you sure?" he asked, rubbing the back of his neck.
She nodded and gave him and Jess a soft smile. "Tell Dean I said, 'thank you for the drink', and that I'll meet you all in the morning for breakfast." Rhaya tapped Jack on the shoulder and whispered something in his ear. He finished off his drink and waved goodbye to the men at his table.
Sam nodded, and watched while Rhaya picked up her bag, then waved as she went out the door with Jack. "Do you think they'll be okay?" Jess wondered. "I know she hasn't had as much to drink as Dean, but Alcaria is still unfamiliar territory for her," she sighed.
Sam tightened his arms around his wife in response. "Jack will make sure she gets there safely. And as she said, she'll be fine. I saw her take Gabriel down flat to the deck when he tried to sneak up on her," he laughed, remembering the event. "Rhaya can take care of herself, my love. Now, when Dean gets back, how about you and I head home for some of that 'alone time' she mentioned. Hmm?"
At that moment, Jo brought over the next round of drinks and noticed that Rhaya had left. "Where's Little Miss Socialite? Alcohol too much for her? Or was Dean not paying enough attention to her?" she taunted.
"Why are you being so hostile towards Rhaya? You don't know even know her," Sam bristled.
"I've seen her type before. She's probably lived her life surrounded by servants, never done a hard day's work in her life," Jo shot back.
"You know, that was my first impression of her, too," Dean chimed in, returning from his bathroom break. "Then I got to know her, and I realized how wrong I was about her. You shouldn't judge a book by its cover, Jo," he added.
"What are you saying, Dean? That you're in love with her?" she gasped.
"I....I don't know if 'love' is the right word, at least not yet. Jo, I know you and I have a history together. But it's....different with Rhaya, I feel something for her that I've never felt with anyone else. She's someone I can see a future with," Dean replied.
"Dean, think about what you're saying," Jo pleaded. "She's known you for, what, a couple of weeks? Are you really going to throw away everything between us for....HER?" Jo snapped. At his silence, she held up her hand. "Never mind, Dean. You've made it quite clear what place I hold in your life, which is no place at all." She turned on her heel and headed back to the bar.
***
"Dean, are you sure? About Rhaya, I mean?" Sam wondered. "Jo's right, you've known each other for as long as I can remember. You gotta know she's carried a torch for you since forever. I'm sure she thought you two would end up together, just like a lot of other people did."
Dean stared at his half-empty glass of beer. "I know, Sammy, but I can't explain it. Jo's always been there for me, but then I'm away from home for such long periods of time. I can't keep asking her to wait for me. She deserves to find someone who can be there for her more than I can be."
"I think Jo's gotten used to it, you being gone. It's not ideal for any of us ladies left behind, but it makes the homecomings that much sweeter," Jessica commented. She leaned her head back to rest on Sam's shoulder. "It may help Jo to know your reasons for choosing Rhaya."
"Your wife is so smart, Sam, always remember that," Dean grinned, then a soft look settled in his eyes. "Rhaya's unlike any woman I've ever met, and you know I've met my share. Maybe I've finally realized that I don't want to leave half of my heart on land when I go out for a job. I mean, I'm glad it works for you two. I guess I see myself with someone who has the same sense of adventure that I do."
"Like Rhaya?" Sam nudged.
Dean grinned. "Yeah. Like Rhaya. Speaking of which, where is she?" he asked, eyes scanning the bar.
***
Jo angrily slammed her empty serving tray on top of the bar, muttering to herself about Dean's rejection. Remembering where she was, she took a moment to compose herself before turning her focus to the customers at the bar.
With rapt attention, Ketch had been watching the scene play out at the corner table. Through Jo's jealousy over Rhaya, he knew he had found his way in to extract information. He waited until she returned to the space behind the bar to speak with her again.
"Excuse me, darling, but I wanted to let you know I would be leaving. By the way, if you hear any information about where my friend's accommodations are, I would be most grateful," he stated. Ketch turned to leave when he heard Jo's voice beckoning him back to the bar. With a smug smile on his face, he leaned across the bar top, his face close to Jo. "I assume this means you have some information?" he queried.
Jo nodded. "I overheard them say that she's staying at the Seaside Inn, which is near the edge of town," she admitted, then gave Ketch directions to the establishment.
"Thank you my dear, you've been most helpful," Ketch stated, then shifted his gaze to those at the corner table. "You know, he's a fool to let you go for another woman." He emphasized his point by taking Jo's hand and pressing his lips to the back of it. With a wink and a bow, Ketch left the tavern.
Once outside, Ketch rushed back to The Red Dragon to report Rhaya's whereabouts to Lucifer. From there, he was granted permission to take a few men with him to the Seaside Inn. After locating Lord Ashton's wayward fiancée, they would bring her back to the ship to return to Ochana. Rhaya's delivery back home would complete the contract with Lord Ashton. After that, Lucifer would collect his reward and life would return to business as usual.
***
Rhaya closed the door on her room at the Seaside Inn. It was exactly as advertised--a quiet, safe place to rest and relax before it was time to board the ship again. Sam was right, Kelly Kline was a strong, independent, but definitely kind woman. She thanked Rhaya for looking out for Jack, and for that reason, she refused to accept payment for the room. As soon as Kelly passed over the key, Rhaya quietly dropped a small pouch with coins on the counter and slipped out to find her room.
With her bag resting on her bed, Rhaya opened it and pulled out her pajamas, then went to wash her face before going to sleep. She was still a little affected by the alcohol she'd drunk at the tavern. Not that she'd had much to drink, only enough to help her relax a little from the excitement of meeting Dean's friends. And she had to admit, having Dean's arm around her shoulders both relaxed and excited her at the same time.
Dean made her feel safe, as if he would do anything to protect her, even though he knows she can take care of herself. Sometimes it was a relief to not have to be the strong one all the time, to be cared for by someone else. She was grateful that Dean seemed to know when to step in and help, and when to let her handle it on her own.
She smiled as her mind drifted back to the nights they spent sharing stories and gazing up at the stars. She believed that Dean truly valued her opinion, like he wanted to hear her thoughts on any subject. He understood her better than her fiancé, and had shown her more compassion than Ashton ever did when she spoke about her mother.
Of course, her attraction to the captain was not only emotional, it was physical as well. It was hard not to be, with his sandy blond hair and his captivating green eyes. It wouldn't surprise her at all if Dean did have a girl in every port, as Jo had claimed. Though Rhaya suspected that the remark was designed to hurt her in some way and was mostly said out of jealousy. But if that was the case, why did she feel an unpleasant twinge in her stomach when she thought about it?
Just as her mind was about to explore that thought further, a knock sounded at the door. As far as she was aware, Sam, Jess, Jack, and Kelly were the only ones who knew she was here. This put her senses on full alert, so she grabbed her dagger from her bag and held it behind her back. The knock sounded again, and a voice called out, "Miss Payton? Rhaya Payton?"
The voice was unfamiliar to her, so she took a chance that maybe someone got the wrong room, and her adrenaline spike was for nothing. She cleared her throat before responding, "No one here by that name. You've got the wrong room." She hoped they wouldn't hear the slight tremor of fear in her voice, and leave, rather than decide to pursue the matter.
The next sound was of the door splintering into pieces from being kicked in, while three men dressed in black entered her room. "I reckon we've got the right room. Been lookin' for ye, Miss Payton. Lord Ashton will be glad to see ye, on account of ye're to be his bride," the man taunted.
"Lord Ashton is severely delusional if he thinks I'm going to marry him," Rhaya scoffed. She brought the dagger out from behind her back and lunged towards the first assailant. The blade sliced across the man's chest, leaving a bloody slash mark behind. The man howled in pain and then again when her fist connected with his nose, causing more blood to flow.
A second assailant grabbed Rhaya from behind, his left arm around her neck and his hand gripping her shoulder. With his right hand, he started to walk her backwards, headed for the door. All of a sudden, she went limp in his arms, causing him to drop her. She used the opportunity to sweep his legs out from under him, sending him crashing to the floor. He was knocked unconscious when the side of his head hit the small table next to the chair.
At the sound of clapping hands, Rhaya whirled around to see a man standing in the doorway. "Very good, darling, you're very good. Taking out two of my men like that, very impressive." He strode over to Rhaya, who raised her dagger to stab him. He anticipated her move and blocked it, taking her wrist in an iron grip until she cried out in pain and was forced to drop her blade. With his other hand, he grasped her chin and locked his eyes on hers. "But playtime is over."
Her chest heaving from fighting the two men, she tried to catch her breath. "Who are you? What do you want with me?" she demanded.
"My name is Arthur Ketch, and I work for Lucifer Morningstar, captain of The Red Dragon. Our services have been retained by your fiancé, Lord Ashton. He and Lady Carissa have promised payment of 50,000 gold pieces for your safe return to Ochana. After that, I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before you and Lord Ashton will be pronounced husband and wife. Oh, congratulations, by the way," he smirked.
"Hmm, 50,000 gold pieces? Is that all my life is worth to my stepmother and my fiancé? And I wouldn't celebrate my nuptials quite yet. I've managed to avoid them thus far, I have no intention of following through on someone else's promise," she concluded.
"I'm certain Lord Ashton will have something to say about that," Ketch countered.
"He can say all he wants, it's not going to make a bit of difference. I'm not going anywhere with you, even if it is back home to Ochana. Now, we can do this the easy way, where you and your men get the hell out of my room, and go back to your ship. Or, we can do things the hard way, where Captain Dean gets involved and you three end up buried at sea."
"Hmm. You're still under the illusion that you are the one in control. Very well, I have a third option. You will accompany me quietly back to The Red Dragon, and we will return you to Lord Ashton in Ochana, collect our reward, and be on our way. However, if you choose to resist, I will have no choice but to inform my men of your decision. They are currently holding the innkeeper and her son hostage. I'm afraid I can't be held responsible for the consequences of your resistance," Ketch replied ominously.
Rhaya's mind raced to find possible solutions for her predicament, particularly ones that resulted in the least harm to Kelly and her son. She considered the possibility that Ketch was bluffing, and that there was no one holding Jack and his mother hostage. Then she realized that she couldn't take that kind of chance. "All right. I'll go," she conceded, her head hung in defeat.
By this time the second man had regained consciousness, and Ketch motioned for him to pick up Rhaya's belongings. Following her eyes as she glanced at her bag, the first man sneered at her. "Don't worry, sweetness, after a thorough inspection, we'll give you your stuff back." He had hold of her left arm and was squeezing it a bit roughly, probably leaving bruises in his wake. His treatment of her was likely in retaliation for the slice across his abdomen Rhaya gave him.
"Let's go. The sooner we leave port, the sooner we can be in Ochana and collect our reward," Ketch ordered. His men marched Rhaya to The Red Dragon, where preparations were already underway to leave port as soon as possible.
***
Once onboard, Rhaya was transferred to Ketch's hold, who then marched her to meet the captain. Lucifer was reviewing various maps and charts to plot the safest and fastest course to Ochana. When he heard a knock at the door, Lucifer stood up from his chair and granted entry to his office. Ketch escorted Rhaya across the threshold, his hand firmly holding her left arm. As soon as they were in Lucifer's office, she wrenched her arm away, rubbing the spot where she had been held.
"So you're the one who's been giving Lord Ashton so much trouble by running away," Lucifer murmured. "Feisty one, aren't you?" he observed, crossing his arms over his chest.
"If by that you mean I don't like being pushed around and for my friends to be threatened, then yeah, I guess you could say that," Rhaya snapped. She was certain that there would likely be some bruising where she massaged her arm and elbow.
"Hmm. Maybe I should keep you around here for a little while, I could get used to someone like you to keep me on my toes. Lord Ashton's loss would be my gain," he grinned.
"Over my dead body," Rhaya growled under her breath.
Lucifer reached over and grabbed her chin, forcing her to look directly into his eyes. "Careful, Miss Payton. Though I admire your spirit and your fiery personality, there are limits to my patience," he replied ominously. He strode confidently to the door before giving her one last leering smile. Then he locked the door behind him, leaving Rhaya alone with her thoughts.
***
A smile graced Jack's face as he carried a breakfast tray to Rhaya's room in the early morning hours. Carefully balancing the breakfast tray with one hand, Jack knocked on Rhaya's door with the other.
"Miss Payton? My mother thought you might like a quick breakfast before you leave today. Miss Payton? R-Rhaya? Can I please come in? I only want to bring in the tray, then I promise I'll--" he looked closer at the entry into the room. Jack gingerly set the tray on the ground to the left of the door, which he noticed was left slightly ajar.
Jack knew he should run and find Captain Dean, or, at the very least, tell his mother before going in by himself. But he couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible had happened to Rhaya. He may not be the best fighter on the crew, but just as she had helped him, he was determined to return the favor, to the best of his ability. With his senses on high alert, he stepped across the threshold.
The room was in disarray, and it was evident that there were signs of a struggle. A small table next to a chair was broken, and along with it, a lamp was shattered. As Jack looked around and tried to piece together the events of the past evening, his eyes landed on something that made his heart nearly stop.
Next to the remnants of the table was a small pool of blood. He had no idea whether it was from Rhaya or her assailants, but he knew he needed help. Jack bolted from the room and returned to the office. Along the way, he was stopped by a woman with short dark hair and hazel eyes, dressed similarly to himself.
"Excuse me, but can you please tell me where I might find Rhaya Payton?"
***
Captain Dean woke up a little after 6:00 the next morning and went through his morning routine. Today was the day he would leave Alcaria with Rhaya and a few of his men to at last find the treasure of The Shadow Pirate. He was more than a little annoyed that Sam suggested that she spend the night at the Seaside Inn. On the other hand, he looked forward to spending time with her on this quest with fewer crew members watching his every move.
He had just finished rinsing off the last of the shaving foam when he heard a commotion. Sam was outside, standing below his window and shouting his name. Dean didn't want his brother to keep up the racket, so he poked his head out to answer. "Dammit, Sam will you shut up? Other people are trying to sleep. What are you--" he ranted but was interrupted.
"It's Rhaya," Sam replied. "She's missing."
Dean's blood ran cold at the news from his brother. What did Sam mean, 'she's missing'? he thought. Could she have secured a vessel and left Alcaria to go after the treasure by herself? he wondered. Nah, we agreed to do this together and she wouldn't go back on her word, he assured himself. Besides, the map was locked in his safe on the ship, and he was the only one who knew the combination.
"Hurry up, Dean, we have to get to the Seaside Inn," Sam urged his brother. Dean nodded then sat down on the bed to pull on his boots. He repacked his bag with anything he'd taken out, then bounded down the steps to meet his brother. Together they ran from Dean's apartment above Harvelle's to their destination.
Jack was waiting for his captain and the First Mate so he could usher them into his mother's office, where everyone was waiting. As he entered the room, Dean noticed a woman dressed in black leggings, tall black boots and a long, purple tunic belted in the middle. "Who the hell is this, and where the hell is Rhaya?" Dean demanded.
The woman stepped forward and stuck out her hand in greeting. "Captain Dean, my name is Keira, and I am captain of The Aurora. Rhaya is, for all intents and purposes, my sister. We grew up together, and her father allowed me to attend school with her. I also participated in her weekly weapons and hand-to-hand combat training. She is also my best friend, and I need your help," she explained.
"Do you know where she is?" he asked.
"I know who has her, and where they are going," Keira responded. "But, I believe the best way we can help her is to continue on your quest for The Shadow Pirate's treasure. You'll be in a much better bargaining position if you do."
Dean vehemently shook his head. "Going after the treasure is the last thing we should do, we need to rescue her, make sure she's safe, then we can go--"
"With all due respect, Captain Dean, she's been captured by Lucifer Morningstar, captain of The Red Dragon. His mission is to escort Rhaya back to Ochana, where he will be paid 50,000 gold pieces for her safe return. After which, he will be on his merry way, going back to his usual shenanigans," Keira muttered.
"But if she is taken back to Ochana, her marriage to Lord Ashton will go through," Dean pointed out. Then I will have lost her forever. "After that, he will most certainly follow through on his threat to do her harm," he persisted.
"Fear not, Captain Dean. I have someone on the inside the governor's mansion to ensure that what you described does not happen. She is a trusted friend to both Rhaya and me, and we've both known her for most of our lives. Darcy is the one who alerted me to my sister's initial disappearance. She is the reason I'm here now, with the knowledge and blessing of her father. Will you help me, Captain Dean?" Keira pleaded.
Dean desperately wanted reassurance that Rhaya was safe and unharmed. After what he'd learned from Jack, he wasn't so sure that both conditions were true. That she was on The Red Dragon, trapped with Lucifer was enough to turn his stomach. Her being returned to Ochana to wed Lord Ashton Kane made it even worse.
For some reason, though, he trusted Captain Keira. Maybe it was because she was a fellow ship's captain. Or it was due to the length of time she'd known Rhaya, or perhaps it was that she was working with someone on the inside. In this situation, time was not his friend. So, for Rhaya's sake, he decided to put his trust in someone he barely knew. He turned to Keira with his decision. "Let's go find us some treasure," he announced.

OH? I never thought that he was replacing Crowley and if they wrote it in that way they kinda failed from the beginning
What i liked specifically was the idea behind an international secret society of academics that complement the work done by the hunters and the idea that they never heard of it because they were wiped out before giving an opportunity to the new generation of learn about it [I am kinda iffy about John backstory being so near to the supernatural before Mary gets killed but that's more of my specific grudge with the internal lore of the series] i would have liked they explored the idea of international monster/hunter/secret society relationships more other than British
As for the dub: yes it is weird to switch languages and while some voice actor do a good job to sound similar [dean] there are others who sound really off [chuck]
Also just checked Destiel isn't canon here
-🔷️
ok tbh i dont think they were directly trying to replace crowley it just feels like arthur ketch's role in the story was at least parallel to crowley's
he's like. the british guy who's willing to do what the winchesters aren't. he thinks sam and dean are too weak and emotional, he's willing to play both sides and ally himself with corrupt people to get what he wants. it's the whole the ends justify the means kind of thing, yk? it feels like watered down crowley because he has the guts to make these big plays but not the power or resources to back it up. and he shouldn't because he hasn't been built up enough but it makes him a weaker character nonetheless
idk he wasn't a bad character imo but making him such a frequent guest star in s13 after crowley left was like. eh.
i agree that the men of letters had potential though, it was an interesting concept that wasn't really very well executed. theyre right tbh american hunters are a fucking mess lmao

Awe this is so awesome! ily Yvette!
The Thing Between Them Series
Gabriel x reader, Arthur Ketch x reader
I know they’re problematic at times, but I’m a sucker for a love triangle. I couldn’t resist writing two cocky men from the spn universe. My favorite series to have written.
Better with You
Din Djarin x Jedi!Reader
Yvette’s flash fiction challenges always inspire me to experiment with new characters. This is all thanks to her!
Alone in the Glass House
Sherlock Homes x reader
Angst and, well, more angst. Based on one of my favorite songs ever.
Disguise
Arthur Ketch x reader
This is my most random fic ever. A crossover between David Haydn Jones’ portrayal in State Farm commercials with his Arthur Ketch. This started off as a joke between friends and somehow became a 2.3k fic. I still cannot believe I wrote this thing.
Angel with a Shotgun
Castiel x reader
Based on another song, what can I say? The lyrics scream Castiel.

Title: Michael Singer & the Heroic Happily Ever After
Author: darcydelaney
Artist: Marvfortytwo
Rating: Mature
Pairings: Dean/Castiel
Length: 27000
Warnings: No archive warnings apply
Tags: The Lost City movie AU, writer Castiel, cover model Dean, Castiel POV, thinly veiled bitterness over finale, there was only one hammock, happy ending
Posting Date: October 19, 2023
Summary: When struggling writer Castiel Novak’s father disappears, Castiel inherits his cult classic “Michael Singer” book series. Following a disastrous first panel of a new book tour with Dean Winchester, the series’ cover model (and big-time fan of both the books and, well, Castiel himself), Castiel decides that he’s going to end the series by killing off the title character, much to Dean’s dismay.  Shortly after said panel, Castiel is kidnapped by Arthur Ketch, who has discovered that Castiel’s father had been using real supernatural folklore in his book series, and wants Castiel to help him figure out the spell for eternal life by using his father’s work. Dean sets out on a mission to rescue Castiel, win his heart, and maybe even save his favorite book series in the process.
Excerpt: To Castiel’s surprise, he’s already got a few hundred followers. He taps over to the list of the four accounts he’s following: his agent, Angel of Thursday Publishing, what appears to be a bot devoted to posting snippets of his father’s previous books, and— “Dean Winchester, keep that wig on your head before I staple it there.” Castiel looks up to see the series’ cover model standing in the doorway of the hotel suite, dressed in well-fitting jeans—too well-fitting, if Castiel is being honest—and a forest green henley, a long blonde wig clutched in one hand. His breath catches in his throat. Castiel has to give Angel of Thursday credit: aside from his hair, Dean is a picture-perfect depiction of Michael Singer, the lead character in his Michael Singer series. Well, not really his, he supposes; it’s his father’s, but just like his beat-up gold Lincoln Continental, the ramshackle house that’s seen better days, and the frankly incredible amount of debt racked up from self-medication, takeout, and failed writing fellowship application fees, his father had passed it on to Castiel before promptly dropping off the face of the earth. Following the adventures of Michael through all things haunted and heroic as he fights against supernatural malpractice and devastation, Michael Singer began as a way for Castiel’s father to pass the time when Castiel was an infant. He’d pour himself a cup of coffee, plop Castiel down on his knee, and bounce him up and down as he wrote, all while simultaneously dragging Michael to hell and back—more often than not, literally. “It’s itchy and it makes me look like a fucking Hemsworth,” Dean grumbles, tossing the wig to the side and dropping down onto the couch in Castiel’s suite. “Hey, Cas.” “H-hello, Dean.” Dean looks at him, mouth twisted into a crooked little grin, and winks. “There’s nothing wrong with looking like a Hemsworth, sweetie,” Anael says. Castiel would never say it aloud, but Dean looks better than a Hemsworth, with or without the absurd wig he’s been forced to wear. In Castiel’s opinion, Dean’s always looked better than a Hemsworth, ever since he’d first been hired as the Michael Singer cover model.  With a jaw that has Castiel’s gut doing somersaults and strong, broad shoulders that pair perfectly with a slim waist, as well as striking green eyes that can convey entire sentences, if not paragraphs, in a single expression, Dean Winchester must have been born to one day grace the cover of supernatural romance novels. He fits right in among the dramatic, stock-photo backgrounds and large, golden typeset of the titles on each cover, but now that Castiel’s in charge of Michael and his looks, maybe he could throw Dean a metaphorical bone. Maybe he could make it canon that Michael gets a much more practical haircut for monster hunting; surely that would give Dean a break (and hopefully put Castiel in his good graces).

Treasure Quest, Chapter 3: Meeting the Crew
Tumblr media
Pairing: Captain Dean x Rhaya Payton (OFC, eventual) Other Characters: Sam Winchester, Bobby Singer, Jack Kline, Gabriel, Arthur Ketch, Lucifer. Governor Darius Payton, Ashton Kane, Damon Sharpe (OMC’s). Carissa, Darcy, Captain Keira (OFC’s)
Word Count: 5057
Warnings: Arranged marriage, overbearing stepmother, scheming fiancé, Captain Dean is a bit less of a jerk to Rhaya, a pinch of misogyny if you squint, ruthless pirates, search for buried treasure.
Series Summary: Rhaya Payton is the daughter of the governor of Ochana. She grew up listening to her father tell her stories of pirates and treasure maps. At a gala one night, her stepmother, Carissa, announces Rhaya’s engagement to Ashton Kane, a wealthy nobleman. Only problem is, no one checked with Rhaya first. After overhearing plans made by her fiancé, Rhaya decides to go on the run and stows away on Captain Dean’s ship. What will happen when he finds her?
This Chapter: Rhaya is settling into her quarters, but there’s still some lingering tension between her and Captain Dean. Eventually, Rhaya meets the rest of the crew, befriending young Jack and embarrassing Gabriel. Meanwhile, back in Ochana, meetings are occurring between old friends and new enemies to discover Rhaya’s whereabouts. Will Captain Dean make it to his home port with Rhaya safely, or will they be intercepted by outside forces?
A/N: Thank you so much to whomever has discovered, liked, commented and reblogged this and any of my works. I am grateful for everyone’s support on here more than I can ever express.❤️ Special shout-out to @deanwanddamons and @deandreamernp for your lovely comments on this story, because it helps keep me going with it. Thank you and enjoy!

Sam and Bobby returned from showing Rhaya to her room, only to be met by Captain Dean waiting in the hallway, his arms folded across his chest. The men brushed past their captain on their return to the upper deck, while he fell into step behind them.
"Did you get the princess settled into her luxury suite?" Dean remarked sarcastically.
Though their captain couldn't see it, both men rolled their eyes at Dean's question. "Yes, she's probably unpacking right now. I told her we'd go back down a little later to bring her up on deck and introduce her to the crew," Bobby informed him as they walked.
"This ain't a pleasure cruise, Bobby, we are a cargo transport ship. We take stuff from Point A to Point B, and then we get paid for doing so. Sometimes we provide protection and act as an escort for other cargo ships going through dangerous waters. If we're not currently under contract--like now--we're trying to find The Shadow Pirate's treasure. And no one, least of all an overindulged--"
Bobby waited until they got nearer to the upper deck before rounding on Dean, his finger pointed in his captain's face. "Now you wait just a damn minute. Rhaya is the daughter of the top government official in a country we do business with from time to time. Yes, she stowed away on your ship, but she had her reasons. She's more than proven to you that she's not some wilting, delicate flower, so it would be in your best interest to cut her a break," Bobby retorted.
"Dean, you've made it abundantly clear that you don't like her," Sam pointed out. "She's definitely aware of it and was pretty upset about it when we left her. You haven't even tried to get to know her, you just assumed that she's like all the rest of the women you've met," he muttered.
"Fine. I will try to lay off with the snarky remarks towards her, as long as she stays out of the way," Dean conceded. "Will that make you two happy?"
Bobby's eyes turned skyward and muttered something under his breath about his captain being a stubborn idjit. By the time Dean caught on to what was said, Bobby had already made his way on deck and was supervising the crew.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
When Rhaya woke from her nap, she stretched her arms above her head. She reached for the small pendant watch her father had given her for her eighteenth birthday. Tears briefly sprung to her eyes when her fingers traced the inscription on the back. It was then that she realized how much she missed him. However, as homesick as she might be, there was no way she could go back and be married to Ashton. Her only hope was to find The Shadow Pirate's treasure to secure her own future and keep Ochana out of Ashton's and Carissa's direct control.
Rhaya dried her tears and went over to her bag to start unpacking some of her clothes and other items. She neatly folded the clothes and placed them in the chair in the corner of her room. Two spare pairs of boots were slid under the chair. Her robe and a hand-knitted cardigan from Darcy was draped over the back of the chair. Rhaya's favorite book was placed on top of the wooden crate serving as a makeshift nightstand next to her bed. One of the most important items she removed from the bag was the quilt from her bed at home, which was handmade by her mother.
The final item removed from the bag was the rolled-up piece of parchment she'd taken from her father's desk. She sat on the bed with her legs crossed under her and carefully smoothed out the map, trying to decipher it. Rhaya was so engrossed in her efforts that she didn't hear the knock on her door or notice it being opened.
"Hello? Miss Payton? It's me, Captain--" his greeting broke off when he saw the map on her bed. "What is that?" he whispered.
Rhaya looked up in alarm at the sound of the captain's voice but quickly schooled her expression. "It-it's just some old piece of paper I found in my father's desk. He's shown it to me many times, usually when he was telling me stories. It's nothing," she shrugged, trying to keep her voice even.
Captain Dean walked closer to where she was sitting as she tried to hurriedly roll up the paper. "May I see it, please?" he held his hand out. By his tone of voice, it was more of a command than a request. At first, Rhaya hesitated, then remembered that she was likely on thin ice with the captain. She realized it would be in her best interest to cooperate, at least for now, and reluctantly handed over the paper. "This is a map," he stated, with his eyes fixed on Rhaya.
"Yes, Captain, I'm aware of what it is," she replied wearily. "My father used to tell me bedtime stories of adventure on the high seas, with pirates and buried treasure. He would take out this map and use it to illustrate the story as he told it. As such, it holds a great deal of sentimental value to me, now may I have it back, please?" Rhaya asked, this time her hand was held out in expectation.
"This map is much more than a-a-a-prop for your bedtime stories, this is the real thing!" Dean exclaimed, his eyes dancing with excitement. "My father spent twenty years of his life on a crusade to find The Shadow Pirate's treasure. He died before he could complete his quest, so it fell to me, the oldest son to finish it. Now that I have this, I can fulfill my promise to him," Dean started to roll up the parchment and had turned to leave with it when Rhaya called out to the captain.
"Wait! Please! That map may be the fulfillment of a promise to your father, but it's what my fiancé is willing to kill me for!" she blurted out. "It's the only leverage I have against Ashton and his plans to get rid of me," she explained. "Captain, I know we didn't start off on the right foot, but there must be some way we can resolve this between us," she implored.
Dean stood in the doorway, with the map in one hand and his other pinching the bridge of his nose. He began to consider that Rhaya was telling the truth after all, that her fiancé really did want to kill her for the treasure of The Shadow Pirate. From the stories he'd heard about Lord Ashton Kane, it wasn't out of the realm of possibility that he would be capable of such an act.
"All right, here's the deal. We are headed towards our home port of Alcaria to drop off some supplies and to give the men time to see their families. Should take no more than a week or so to get there," Captain Dean explained.
"Okay, and then what?" Rhaya prompted.
"Well, this map is too important to both of us to be left laying around for anyone to find. For this reason, I will keep the map locked in my safe until we leave Alcaria. After that, we'll pick up the trail again for the treasure, using the map," Dean replied.
Rhaya jumped up from her bed and stood with her hands on her hips. "But-but it's my map! You wouldn't have anything if it wasn't for me! How exactly is it fair that you get to keep it in your room, in your safe??" she retorted.
Captain Dean strode over to Rhaya's position and stood nearly toe-to-toe with her. "Perhaps I should remind you that you are, as of this moment, a guest on board my ship. One I didn't intend to have. Anyone else caught stowing away would have at least been thrown in the brig. Or, taken to the nearest uninhabited area and left to fend for himself. I suggest you accept this deal and trust that I won't make any other 'alterations' to it," he declared.
Rhaya glared at the captain, trying to contain her anger while her eyes blazed with fury. The worst part was, he had a point about how she'd been treated thus far while onboard. He hadn't thrown her in the brig, made her walk the plank, or left her on a deserted island. All of those were options available to him as captain. She finally broke eye contact, finding the woodgrain in the floorboards extremely interesting. "Fine. Please keep the map locked in your safe in your room. Captain. With one request," she added.
Dean crossed his arms over his broad, muscular chest. "What is it?" he demanded.
"That we go after the treasure together, and whatever we find is split 50-50," Rhaya requested, at which Captain Dean scoffed. "We need each other and have our own reasons, our own motivations for pursuing this. If the legends of the treasure are true, then 50% will be more than enough to secure my future. One where I don't have to marry Ashton or anyone else unless it's my choice," she affirmed.
Dean still had his doubts that Rhaya had what it would take to follow the map to its ultimate payoff. However, after the skill she showed with her dagger and his hat, he thought that maybe he should give her the benefit of the doubt. "All right, you have a deal. A 50-50 split of whatever is at the end of that rainbow," he agreed.
Rhaya stuck her hand out for him to shake, spitting in it first. "I accept, Captain Dean."
Surprised, Dean spit in his own hand before shaking Rhaya's to seal the deal. Her face broke out into a brilliant smile at the turn of events. That smile could light up even the darkest of nights. Whoa, where did that come from? he thought. He cleared his throat and turned to leave again. "Well, guess I'll leave you to it," he muttered.
"Wait!" she called out. There was that damned word again, Dean muttered to himself. "Bobby said something about introducing me to the rest of the crew. Can I go up on deck with you so I can meet everyone?" Rhaya asked.
Dean hesitated, then nodded and stepped aside to allow Rhaya to precede him in walking from her room. "After you, princ--er, Miss Payton," he mumbled.
As she passed him, she caught his gaze and flashed him a smile. "Please call me Rhaya," she requested, to which he gave a swift nod.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
After breakfast with the Lord Darius and Lady Carissa, Darcy returned to her room. She had heard bits and pieces of Damon Sharpe's communiqué with Lord Ashton's so-called "specialist". When she heard the name "Lucifer Morningstar", Darcy knew she had to send her own message to someone who could help Rhaya.
Fortunately, salvation came in the form of Rhaya's best friend, Keira, whose ship had just entered Ochana's harbor that morning. Keira was the current captain of The Aurora, with her all-female crew dubbed "The Sea Angels". Darcy couldn't think of a reason for The Aurora to be in port, unless Keira had somehow come back for Rhaya due to her engagement to Lord Ashton.
Keira and Rhaya had grown up together, with Keira allowed to attend the private tutoring sessions Lord Darius arranged for his daughter. After lessons, the two were sparring partners, practicing their hand-to-hand combat skills. Twice a week, the captain of the governor's guard, Connor, instructed Keira and Rhaya in the art of the blade.
Around six years ago, Keira left Ochana to travel and live a life full of adventure on the high seas. She landed on The Aurora by chance, working her way up the ranks. She eventually became its captain, inheriting the ship from the previous captain, Sydney "The Sparrow" Kelly.
A year after Keira left Ochana, she returned with The Aurora and her crew. She sneaked into the governor's mansion, then hid in Rhaya's room to wait and talk with her. When Rhaya walked in, Keira came out of hiding and the two friends embraced. Keira tried to convince her best friend to leave Ochana with her on the ship and travel the world. They would have real adventures, not just the ones Rhaya's father told them about in bedtime stories.
There was a part of Rhaya that desperately wanted to take Keira up on her offer, to experience life outside of Ochana. But Rhaya couldn't follow Keira and leave her father behind, especially when she didn't trust her new stepmother, Carissa. Too soon, it was time for Keira to get back to her ship. Before she left, Keira vowed that she would return to Ochana one day, and this time, she wouldn't leave without Rhaya.
Darcy was standing outside of Rhaya's room that night and was aware of Keira's visit and her promise. She knew that the bond between Rhaya and Keira went beyond friendship, and stretched into sisterhood. If Rhaya was in trouble, Darcy was certain that Keira would drop everything to be at Rhaya's side, as Rhaya would for Keira. If anyone can help Rhaya, Darcy thought confidently, it's Keira.
A hand clapped Darcy's shoulder from behind, while another covered her mouth to muffle any scream. "Ssh, it's only me," a voice whispered. Darcy visibly relaxed and when she turned, she was face-to-face with her solution, pulling her into a tight embrace. "So, what's my sister gone and done now?" Keira grinned.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Rhaya followed Captain Dean's directions, navigating the sometimes narrow passageways of the ship. Eventually they reached the daylight of the main deck, where Rhaya got her first real look at the activity occurring on the ship. The crew appeared to be engaging in leisure activities, with a few men in the corner playing cards. One or two of them were playing an instrument, while others were having a smoke and carrying on in a debate.
Over in another corner was a young man, whom Rhaya supposed was likely the youngest crew member. He had light brown hair, blue eyes and a slight gap between his top two front teeth. Under the toe of his left boot was a piece of paper laying on the deck, while his hands were looping and twisting around a thick stretch of rope.
Rhaya carefully approached the young man, not wanting to startle him. "Excuse me," she remarked softly. His head snapped up to see Rhaya's warm, coffee-colored eyes. "My name is Rhaya Payton. Is this seat taken?" she asked, pointing to the space next to him.
"Um, no, Miss, you can sit here. My name i-is Jack Kline," he stammered.
"It's nice to meet you, Jack," Rhaya beamed and stuck out her hand, which Jack shook in return. "May I ask what you're working on?"
"Oh, um, I'm learning how to tie knots. You know, so I can earn my keep here, do my part to help out. Gotta be ready at a moment's notice to secure the ship to the dock," Jack explained. "Only, I'm having trouble with this one kind of knot," he remarked, holding up the piece of paper. At that moment, a breath of wind caught the paper and whisked it out of his hand before Jack could catch it.
Seeing Jack hang his head in defeat nearly broke Rhaya's heart to witness. "Jack? I may be able to help you, if you can tell me which knot it was," she offered. He turned a skeptical eye towards Rhaya, who chuckled at his expression. "I know, I know, what does a girl know about tying knots, right?" she inquired and playfully rolled her eyes.
Jack nodded sheepishly. "Can you really help me?" he wondered.
"I'll let you in on a little secret Jack. My father was very open-minded about my education, and as such, he gave me free rein to learn anything anyone was willing to teach me. Therefore, I have quite a bit of knowledge of, shall we say, less than 'ladylike' subjects, including knots. Lend me your rope, please," she requested, holding out her hand.
Jack did as Rhaya asked, then told her what knot he was trying to master. She went through the motions and even showed Jack a couple of shortcuts, while still reaching the correct result. Then Rhaya unraveled the knot and watched as Jack attempted to follow her instructions. After a couple of wrong moves, he eventually caught on and was successful.
Little did she know that while she was explaining her methods, Captain Dean, Sam, and Gabriel were watching their interaction. Each man had different thoughts on the matter, with Sam appreciating Rhaya's patience and Captain Dean surprised yet again at her knowledge.
Gabriel, of course, had other thoughts of a somewhat less than honorable nature. He was pleased to hear that Rhaya would be staying on board for the time being. For this reason, Gabriel decided to interrupt the knot-tying lesson with Jack and crept over to where they were sitting.
Rhaya was in the middle of teaching Jack another knot when she felt a hand on her back, in the middle of her shoulder blades. She pivoted to her right, and swung her right arm out, sweeping someone's legs out from under him and dropping him to the deck. Rhaya quickly subdued her assailant by pressing down with her left knee into his torso and holding his left arm down. She withdrew her dagger from its holster and held the tip of the blade to the man's neck.
Sam's eyes nearly bugged out of his head and his mouth dropped open as he witnessed Gabriel being taken down. "Did you see that?" he whispered then elbowed his brother. "Oh my God, he didn't even see that coming!" Sam continued laughing, not noticing that Dean was no longer paying attention to him.
Meanwhile, Dean couldn't tear his eyes away from the scene before him. Rhaya quickly and accurately assessed the situation, and her reaction was perfect. It amazed Dean how fluid her movements were in not only subduing her opponent but drawing her weapon. Each moment spent observing the governor's daughter added a layer of complexity to be appreciated by the captain. Dean smiled to himself before walking over to Rhaya to introduce her to the crew.
Gabriel held his hands up in surrender and flashed Rhaya what he thought was a winning smile. "Well, hello there, sweet cheeks," he chuckled. "Now that you've got me at your mercy, what're you gonna do with me?" he smirked and waggled his eyebrows.
Rhaya rolled her eyes at his suggestive tone and stood up to let Gabriel out of her hold. "Get over yourself, Gabriel. You're not as charming as you'd like to think you are," she muttered. Rhaya twirled her dagger in her hand before returning it to her thigh holster.
Dean fought back a smile as he heard Rhaya's zinging retort to Gabriel, surely designed to knock him down a peg or two. "All right, everyone, listen up. We have a visitor on board, who will be accompanying us on our journey home to Alcaria. Her name is Miss Rhaya Payton, daughter of Governor Darius Payton of Ochana," he announced. "She is to be treated with the utmost respect at all times. Any man daring to do otherwise will answer to me."
Rhaya's gaze shifted from man to man, smiling and nodding as each of them tipped his hat when Captain Dean stated his name. Sam was First Mate, or Quartermaster, second-in-command to the captain. Dr. Novak, or "Jimmy", was the physician on board, followed by Garth, who was in charge of the galley, while Benjamin, or "Benny" was the Master Gunner. Balthazar and Gabriel were the Boatswains, in charge of docking, anchoring and naval provisions.
Bobby was the most experienced member of the crew, having served under the ship’s first captain, John Winchester, while Jack was the least experienced. However, Rhaya could sense Jack's thirst for knowledge and of wanting to prove himself to his superior officers. She made Jack a silent promise to help him whenever and with whatever she could.

"Thank you so much for coming, Keira, I'm so glad you're here. Last night, Lady Carissa announced Rhaya's engagement to Lord Ashton Kane. As you can imagine, Rhaya was less than pleased with the turn of events. When I went to wake her up this morning, she was already gone," Darcy explained.
At the mention of Lord Ashton Kane's name, Keira rolled her eyes in disgust. "Figures Carissa would do something like that. Anything to get Rhaya out of her way and exert her influence over Lord Darius," she muttered. "Do we have any idea where my sister is?" Keira asked.
Darcy shook her head. "I know of at least three ships in port that night. Lord Ashton's ship, The Dark Soul, which I'm sure we can guarantee she's not on that one," she chuckled, with Keira joining in. "The Moon Raider belongs to Lord Crowley, and then The Black Diamond, which belongs to Captain Dean Winchester," Darcy mentioned.
"Hmm. I know where the home port is for The Black Diamond, so I'll start there. If we leave now, we might even be able to intercept them and rescue Rhaya before they reach port," Keira affirmed. "You did the right thing by contacting me, Darcy. Please tell Lord Darius not to worry, we'll get Rhaya back for him, safe and sound," she promised. Darcy and Keira embraced one last time before going their separate ways, with one woman going to her ship and the other returning to the governor's mansion.
Unbeknownst to the two friends, one of The Savage Demons from Lucifer's crew had wandered outside the pub for some fresh air. Arthur Ketch, a deck hand for The Red Dragon, heard female voices around the corner, speculating on Rhaya's whereabouts. He was surprised to recognize Keira from his previous dealings with The Aurora. The other woman had to have close ties to Rhaya, perhaps as a member of the governor's staff, or possibly as her lady-in-waiting.
Ketch heard Darcy mention The Moon Raider and The Black Diamond, and how there was no way Rhaya was on The Dark Soul, Lord Ashton's ship. It was clear that Keira felt the best course of action was to follow Captain Winchester's trail. Ketch knew he had to report this information back to his captain. He waited until the two women embraced and parted ways before returning to pay his tab in the tavern.

After a hearty meal and an evening of entertainment with music and dancing, Rhaya should have had no trouble falling asleep. Instead, she tossed and turned, unable to quiet her mind enough for it to allow her to slip into a restful state. If she were back in her room at the mansion, Rhaya's solution would have been to sneak downstairs to the library for something to read. Except that the books she brought with her were ones she'd read so many times that she could almost recite them word for word.
Rhaya picked up her robe from where it was draped across the back of the chair, and wrapped around her, tying the sash in front. In her bare feet, she carefully felt her way along the walls until she finally found the door that led to the main deck of the ship. She silently closed it behind her, then padded over to the rail to look out over the water.
The clear sky allowed for an unobstructed view of the full moon, which was surrounded by an endless array of twinkling stars. Back home, Rhaya was fascinated by the various constellations and the legendary stories behind them. Ever the seeker of knowledge, she devoured volumes on mythology and astronomy to help her identify the celestial configurations in the sky.

Dean held his pipe in his left hand while holding a match in his right hand to try and ignite the tobacco. He was about to strike the match on the bottom of his boot when he heard what sounded like singing. However, he shouldn't be hearing music, because everyone was supposed to be asleep. Then he saw her.
She stood at the rail, her head tilted back towards the heavens. Her strawberry blond hair cascaded down her back and seemed to take on a rosy glow in the moonlight. Eyes closed, she rocked from side to side on her feet, as if she was dancing with someone. She continued to hum to herself, while a soft smile graced her face. She was positively ethereal.
"Beautiful," Dean rasped out. He winced as he didn't mean to speak his thought out loud.
At the sound of Captain Dean's voice, the spell was broken, and Rhaya gasped sharply, her eyes flying open. "What?" she whispered as she turned around to face him. The whole time she was trying to calm her racing heart, which was doing its best to escape its cage.
Dean waved his hand skyward. "The stars, I mean. They're beautiful, aren't they? In all my years as a captain, I never get tired of this view," he remarked.
"Yes, they’re breathtaking,” she acknowledged. “I've always loved stargazing. Only, I'd have to get pretty far away from the manor and past the woods to see anything like this. I'm sure you can imagine how often that happens," Rhaya chuckled.
"What brings you up here now?" Captain Dean asked.
"Couldn't sleep. Thought with all the after-dinner entertainment that I'd fall right away, but no such luck. My brain has been running a mile a minute and won't slow down enough to let me get some rest," she replied. "That's why I thought coming up here would calm me down."
Dean hummed in agreement and moved to join Rhaya at the rail, his pipe forgotten for the moment. As captain, he was no stranger to difficulties with falling or even staying asleep. He regarded the young lady before him, who appeared so demure and vulnerable in the moonlight. A complete contrast to the woman who mere hours before had decisively taken down a member of his crew.
To Rhaya, his silence indicated that he'd rather be alone with his thoughts, and therefore chose to make a discreet exit. "Well, I should leave you to relax and enjoy your pipe. I'll return to my quarters and try again to get some sleep. Goodnight, Captain," Rhaya murmured. She pulled her robe more tightly around herself as she passed by where Dean was standing.
"W-Wait, Miss Payton!" Captain Dean called.
"Yes, Captain?" she responded, then turned to face him. An innocent blush appeared on her cheeks, almost as if she suddenly remembered she was only wearing a nightgown under her robe in his presence.
"Do you....um....do you know the legend behind any of the constellations up there?" Dean asked.
Rhaya smiled. Perhaps her earlier assessment was incorrect and instead, Dean wouldn't mind if she stayed to discuss astronomy with him. "It's one of my favorite subjects, Captain. What would you like to talk about?"
Dean returned her smile. "Well, for instance, as a captain, the most important constellation is Ursa Minor, or the Little Dipper," he began. "That's because it contains Polaris, or the North Star, which aids in navigation. If you can find that, you can find your way home," he stated.
Although she knew that, Rhaya was enjoying her conversation with Captain Dean. His reluctance to let her leave his side indicated a lowering of his guard just enough to show her a bit of the man behind the captain's rank. "That’s good to know. What else can you tell me?" she prompted.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Ketch returned to The Red Dragon and closed out his tab at the pub. Most of the crew were otherwise engaged in drinking, wenching or a combination of the two. As soon as he was back on board, he searched the ship to find the captain and speak with him. It was imperative to share what he'd heard about Rhaya's whereabouts before her distance from Ochana grew too great.
His search for Lucifer began in the captain's quarters. Ketch knocked on the door and opened it when granted entrance. "Excuse me, captain, but I may have information regarding the whereabouts of Lord Ashton's wayward fiancée," Ketch remarked, then waited for Lucifer's response.
Lucifer had been examining a collection of charts and maps, trying to pinpoint Rhaya's location with the information at hand. Tracking down a runaway bride-to-be was not exactly part of his list of services. If a groom couldn't hold onto his woman, that was his problem. But in this case, there was a reward of 50,000 gold pieces at stake. And that was something Lucifer could not easily afford to dismiss. "Well? What did you find out?"
Ketch explained how he'd overheard Darcy and Keira talking about Rhaya's disappearance, and where they thought she might be. "Captain Keira indicated that she would set sail for Alcaria, home port of The Black Diamond," he replied.
Lucifer abandoned the charts on his table and leaned back in his chair. "The Black Diamond, hmm?" he pondered. "And her captain is none other than Dean Winchester. He and I go way back, to the time of his father, John Winchester. John and I didn't exactly see eye-to-eye on things, hence why I left his employment. Now that I've got my own ship, my own crew, as captain, I get to do things my way," he affirmed.
"Shall I go back to town and fetch the rest of the crew, captain?" Ketch asked.
"Unless you want to be solely responsible for all duties on this ship, I suggest you get the crew back to the ship. I want to shove off for Alcaria within the hour," Lucifer retorted. "Anyone not onboard by then will be left behind."
Ketch clicked the heels of his boots together, bowed to his captain and took his leave. Lucifer's thoughts settled on what it will be like to see The Black Diamond and her crew again. Last he knew, Dean was named captain after John passed away, while brother Sam was his second-in-command.
There certainly wasn't any love lost between Lucifer and the Winchesters, or even Bobby Singer and the rest of the crew, for that matter. However, this was no time to dwell on the past or to settle old scores. This was strictly a business matter--find Rhaya and return her to Lord Ashton. After that, collect the reward money, and be back out to sea. I will not allow Captain Dean Winchester or anyone else to get in my way, he vowed.
