I think what I don't like about the Makoto cameo is that he incidentally and accidentally saves Kyoko's life through his luck.

He trips her and they both fall and Kyoko subsequently does not get her head smashed in by a shot put that Sakura has thrown like a baseball.

Because I know Makoto is being set up as the person who takes over Yui's spot in Kyoko's life. Who gets her to trust people again and emotions and etc.

So we have Makoto immediately saving Kyoko just like Yui literally just died saving Kyoko.

Except that Makoto. doesn't have a choice here. He does in THH, and he canonically makes that choice, and that parallel is important, that Makoto unintentionally sacrifices himself for Kyoko.

But that's the thing - both of these are unintentional.

In his cameo, Makoto saves Kyoko by accident.

In THH, Makoto intentionally saves Kyoko, but he's not aware that will put his own head on the executioner's block.

Yui walked directly into putting her life on the line for Kyoko full-stop, constantly, not looking back, until she died doing it.

That's not the same.

And the closest parallel we get to it isn't Makoto for Kyoko, it's Kyoko in DR3 saying that if she has to choose between herself and Makoto, she will choose keeping Makoto alive. Full-stop. And then sacrifices herself in that pursuit.

(She gets better because she found an antidote for poison, but she had no certainty that would work or that anyone would even notice she wasn't really dead. Bless Mikan, actually, because none of the others noticed. Kyoko out here literally teaching Makoto how to investigate, and boy has learned NOTHING.)

And this is not, like, anti-Naegiri or anything like that. Clearly, canon sees the appeal here.

But Makoto is not the Yui parallel that canon wants him to be as entirely as it wants him to be.

Kyoko is.

Ah, right, another thing that hit me this episode is just the parallels between Kyouka, Dazai, and Yosano. I'm sure this has been said before but hear me out...

With Kyouka and Yosano, it the way they grew to resent and hate their abilities and their own selves for what their abilities did to the people they loved or wanted to save, even though Kyouka's ability definitely was death-coded and Yosano's was life-coded. I mean, firstly, they found hope in the ADA which is just....*clenches fists* and secondly, it also tells me how the actual message of their stories isn't really "hey, this is only good for insert death/life" like they thought but more that it's what you do with that ability and how you see yourself and how maybe nothing and no one is really coded as evil or perhaps even if it is that doesn't mean it cannot be redeemed and just -

And with Dazai and Yosano, it's just the way they witnessed someone they loved die that finally broke them in their own ways. For Dazai it was Odasaku dying because the latter was grief-and-revenge stricken because of what the PM and Gide did. For Yosano it was how her soldier died because he was too traumatised by the war and what Mori did. Something about Oda and the soldier's deaths being from the way they saw life becoming cheapened, meaning that they saw their own lives as not really worth living...and how that managed to break something in Dazai and Yosano and propel them to get out of their situations....

Also. Just. Yosano and Kyouka finally saw the value in their lives and grew in a wonderfully positive direction. Dazai, you're doing AMAZING but you're still suicidal and so stupid...

not a long while ago,  i posted about wanting to explore dynamics more and build more long-lasting connections between the muses,  but as of late there’s also been another related thing circulating inside my head,  which is the topic of romantic shipping.  i always say i’m open to considering those and people should always feel free to approach me about it and then we can discuss whether it makes sense or not,  though something i’m not particularly a fan of is devoiding a dynamic between characters for the sake of shipping.  romance is not my priority and even when it happens,  most of the time those relationships still will be difficult because this is how i write and interpret leon and his approach towards it.  all i’m asking for is some more depth.  otherwise,  simply speaking,  it’s hard for me to stay excited or interested.

sometimes venturing into fic for a more popular fandom makes me realize that i have really been spoiled by giles/jenny, where the comparative rarity of the pairing means that the majority of people who write for them will really think about it, and i personally have done such careful study of all the available fic that i know which ones are good and have a little library card catalogue in my head. whenever i go into anything that has an actual wealth of fic for me to choose from and is being updated frequently, i very often end up eye-rolling so hard they're gonna get stuck like that & closing a whole bunch of tabs because He Simply Would Not Fucking Say That.

so zack was incredibly nice for starters. i saw him last on my small list of meet and greets, mostly cause i was so nervous going into this alone and also his line was the longest one by the time i got in

but he was asking where i was from and when i told him i was finnish he was like "youre not only the first finn ive seen today, but also the first scandi" which. makes me incredibly happy cause he knows we out there. i told him i was honestly surprised cause this was like a huge weekend for europe so i thought there would have been more of us (especially since like him and ospreay were on the lineup for the show and meet and greets), and he just said its really cool that im there. idk why i ended up asking him if hes ever been to finland, he said something about it that bridged to that and when he said no i told him he really needed to. and then we spent like. solid two or three minutes just talking about our little local circles cause he knew about the companys past and i had to tell him about all the stuff thats much better now and it was so delightful to like. talk to someone so huge about something so small as our indie wrestling cause like he. he Gets It

he also joked at me about the weather like "oh yeah you picked a great weekend to be here, its actually sunny, youre not used to that either are you" like BOY. dont call me out like this lmao

ㅤyou've been hurt, badly, haven't you? it's been a long time since you've felt comfortable in your own mind. everything's become a sign that you're going to be hurt again. so when something good does come along, you're not used to it. it feels foreign. it's weird and scary. you want to believe that it will work out, but you just can't. you've been burned too many times. because of this, you've become cynical. you never wanted it to be this way, but you're trying to protect yourself. i see how it's easier to not accept the good, out of fear of its inevitable end. once the dust settles, you're terrified of being alone again. but by doing this, you're never enjoying those good moments. you're letting them pass you by. you have to start letting the happiness come to you. even if it's in waves, isn't that better than not at all?

i think of the three main games first cases, drv3's is my favorite.

like.

in some ways it's the inverse of dr1's case. it's played straight, because kaede is the ultimate pianist to sayaka's ultimate pop idol, but it's the inverse because the player is playing as kaede. (and sayaka dies, where kaede is not the victim.)

it's also the inverse of dr2's case, where imposter sacrifices himself to save nagito from getting attacked by teruteru (even while nagito was trying to kill him). kaede does, in a way, sacrifice herself in her attempt to save the group. (and imposter dies, where kaede is not the victim.)

and like. the poignancy of knowing kaede did this in an attempt to save everyone brings back 2-4 and nekomaru's death/gundham's murder. knowing that kaede could have gotten out just fine and chose not to because it was more important to find the mastermind. and kaede using this to get the actual ultimate detective to buck up.

and the fact that kaede is voiced by kyoko's voice actor, and it is so clear in some of her lines, and it's just hey, here's kyoko, telling you to buck up again.

like it's just. so. good.

but also it is that good because it builds so well off of everything else in the series up to that point. even knowing the twist, it's so good. i can only imagine how much that must have hit if i hadn't known.

shiori is either n//aoyas twin but they weren’t really close as kids and aren’t close now so there isn’t much to that?? (or maybe they were but now its strained due to yk succession who gets to be heir i am not quite sure about that yet!! oo it would give s//uccesiion but make it j//jk OO!!!!!) ORR she’s the older sib of m*ai and m*aki?? and still candidate of heir (?) in that as well?)

BUT ANYWAY..!!!! she was an old classmate of g/ojo and the besties (was maybe in either his year or n/anami and kannas year?) AND BESTEST BUDS. its giving childhood sweethearts to lovers yk? CUUTE.

fast forward t*oji passes….ish. right she and him after they grad they raise her nephew together (he even has a room at her apartment they’ve been SUUPER married but never got together what gives yk?? ILL EXPLAIN 💀) so her career skyrocketed (as an actress?? model? both????) and so things got busy BUUT like they’ve baaasically been living together and raising two youngins (minako and t*oji have a daughter aya <3) they hang out like ALL THE TIME……. and yet not married 💀

(but i mean thats not to say they’ll never yk *giggles* shes taking a year off of to help out and support m*egumi at his first year with goj 🥀🤧 SUPER MARRIED PARENTS!!) theyve alsoo been very invested the last decade or so with getting two of their besties together ever since n*anami said he was interested in her since like forever and never told them about it but swore to never tell her about it so theyve been trying to subtly *wheeze* set them up 🥀🤡

WHICH LEADS ME TO KANNAAA so she’s the granddaughter to the principal of the k*yoto campus and she transferred to tokyo so not to have the rep as “principals kid” (she still did alas 💀✨🤧) and possibly get special treatment bc shes related to one of the administrators. her curse technique she uses (its like c*assia in r*ogue trader-ish seeing emotions, curses and resonances as colors and swipes of paint and swipes of a paintbrush !!) and its helpful as she is a psychotherapist these days for sorcerers !!!!!!! 🌸 very much on the outside cool and collected “has her stuff together.” meanwhile that mask hides behind a hot mess teehee <3 also parties a lot chronic partner drags shiori to all of her after parties and galas and suggests kanna “tags along” so she can party 🥀😌 the girls are thriving!!!!!!!!

she didn’t think anything of nan and in fact likely didn’t even know he existed let alone has had a childhood harbored crush on her 🥀💀 ……. and then they reunite when they’re set up together in ep9 TEEHEE (everyone (g*ojo and shiori) cheers they’re brains for suggesting she aid them HUUUGE) she had planned only to be there for the exchange event and then go back to things buuuut teehee n*anami like kanna fell HARD (everyone’s thrilled especially g*ojo and shiori ndjxxh) and thus decided to take a transfer to be in t*okyo HEHE.

SO GOLDFISH BRAIN their curses!! minako (dream walking/weaving), shiori (pied piper if i make her an actress she doesn’t do musicals or play instruments UNLESS there’s curses in her midst bc she can control them and people in the vicinity with her ability (like meat puppets 🥀🤧 BUUT if i made her a model people already would expect her not to sing so i mean it would be convenient??) and kanna was listed earlier!!

(also when g*ojo and shiori finally DO get together everyone was like ????? we thought you both already were?? and they were like 🥀🧍‍♀️🧍👁️✨😶🫨)

BONUS TRACK VERSION: so nan and kan begin as more of a fwb but it doesn’t last im thinking bc teehee <3 BUUT not before shiori stopped by kans place for something and noticed…… something of nanamis there 🥀💀 (like a tie or jacket of his or something yk?) I think part of the reason I've grown to like Chuuya is because he's obviously a very stereotypically masculine guy. Strong, excellent fighter, rough speech, cool with murder as a business, tough and ragey...

And YET, he cares about his subordinates, he grieves the people that are lost, his mentor is a (VERY queenly and also kind of stereotypically feminine) woman whom he unquestioningly respects, he cares about his appearance, and he FEELS other emotions asides from irritation and annoyance (screw you, Dazai) and struggles deeply with his humanity....

All without taking away or undermining the former traits
