The Leper's Prayer (Leviticus 14:1-32; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16)
1 And when he had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. 2 And behold, a leper came up to [him] and did him homage, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou art able to cleanse me. 3 And he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will; be cleansed. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus says to him, See thou tell no man, but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses ordained, for a testimony to them.
The Centurion's Great Faith (Luke 7:1-10; John 4:43-54)
5 And when he had entered into Capernaum, a centurion came to him, beseeching him, 6 and saying, Lord, my servant lies paralytic in the house, suffering grievously. 7 And Jesus says to him, I will come and heal him. 8 And the centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not fit that thou shouldest enter under my roof; but only speak a word, and my servant shall be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say to this [one], Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my bondman, Do this, and he does it. 10 And when Jesus heard it, he wondered, and said to those who followed, Verily I say unto you, Not even in Israel have I found so great faith. 11 But I say unto you, that many shall come from [the] rising and setting [sun], and shall lie down at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens; 12 but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth. 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, Go, and as thou hast believed, be it to thee. And his servant was healed in that hour.
Jesus Heals at Peter's House (Mark 1:29-34; Luke 4:38-41)
14 And when Jesus had come to Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law laid down and in a fever; 15 and he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she arose and served him. 16 And when the evening was come, they brought to him many possessed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all that were ill; 17 so that that should be fulfilled which was spoken through Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities and bore our diseases.
The Cost of Following Jesus (Luke 9:57-62; Luke 14:25-33; John 6:60-65)
18 And Jesus, seeing great crowds around him, commanded to depart to the other side. 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, Teacher, I will follow thee whithersoever thou mayest go. 20 And Jesus says to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven roosting-places; but the Son of man has not where he may lay his head. 21 But another of his disciples said to him, Lord, suffer me first to go away and bury my father. 22 But Jesus said to him, Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.
Jesus Stills the Storm (Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25)
23 And he went on board ship and his disciples followed him; 24 and behold, [the water] became very agitated on the sea, so that the ship was covered by the waves; but he slept. 25 And the disciples came and awoke him, saying, Lord save: we perish. 26 And he says to them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then, having arisen, he rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 But the men were astonished, saying, What sort [of man] is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?
Demons Cast into Pigs (Mark 5:1-20; Luke 8:26-39)
28 And there met him, when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, two possessed by demons, coming out of the tombs, exceeding dangerous, so that no one was able to pass by that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Son of God? hast thou come here before the time to torment us? 30 Now there was, a great way off from them, a herd of many swine feeding; 31 and the demons besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, send us away into the herd of swine. 32 And he said to them, Go. And they, going out, departed into the herd of swine; and lo, the whole herd [of swine] rushed down the steep slope into the sea, and died in the waters. 33 But they that fed them fled, and went away into the city and related everything, and what had happened as to those possessed by demons. 34 And behold, the whole city went out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged [him] to go away out of their coasts. — Matthew 8 | 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY) The Darby Translation of the Holy Bible is in the public domain. Luke 15:11-32 The Parable of the Prodigal Son
11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:
12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.
26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.
27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.
28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.
29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:
30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.
32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

Commentary on the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to St. Mark – Chapter 5
St. Mark, the disciple and interpreter of St. Peter (as noted by St. Jerome.) according to what he heard from St. Peter himself, wrote at Rome a brief Gospel at the request of the Brethren (fellow Christians), about ten years after our Lord's Ascension; which when St. Peter had heard, he approved of it, and with his authority he published it to the Church to be read. Baronius and others maintain, that the original was written in Latin: but the more general opinion is that the Evangelist wrote it in Greek.
First, Christ expels a legion of demons from a possessed man and they, with His permission, enter into swine, casting them into the sea. Second (v. 25), He heals a hemorrhaging woman of her flow of blood. Third (v. 35), He calls the daughter of Jairus from death back to life.
And they came over the strait of the sea into the country of the Gerasens. 2 And as he went out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the monuments a man with an unclean spirit, 3 Who had his dwelling in the tombs, and no man now could bind him, not even with chains. 4 For having been often bound with fetters and chains, he had burst the chains, and broken the fetters in pieces, and no one could tame him. 5 And he was always day and night in the monuments and in the mountains, crying and cutting himself with stones. 6 And seeing Jesus afar off, he ran and adored him. 7 And crying with a loud voice, he said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus the Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not. 8 For he said unto him: Go out of the man, thou unclean spirit. 9 And he asked him: What is thy name? And he saith to him: My name is Legion, for we are many. 10 And he besought him much, that he would not drive him away out of the country. 11 And there was there near the mountain a great herd of swine, feeding. 12 And the spirits besought him, saying: Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. 13 And Jesus immediately gave them leave. And the unclean spirits going out, entered into the swine: and the herd with great violence was carried headlong into the sea, being about two thousand, and were stifled in the sea. 14 And they that fed them fled, and told it in the city and in the fields. And they went out to see what was done: 15 And they came to Jesus, and they see him that was troubled with the devil, sitting, clothed, and well in his wits, and they were afraid. 16 And they that had seen it, told them, in what manner he had been dealt with who had the devil; and concerning the swine. 17 And they began to pray him that he would depart from their coasts. 18 And when he went up into the ship, he that had been troubled with the devil, began to beseech him that he might be with him. 19 And he admitted him not, but saith to him: Go into thy house to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had mercy on thee. 20 And he went his way, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men wondered. 21 And when Jesus had passed again in the ship over the strait, a great multitude assembled together unto him, and he was nigh unto the sea. 22 And there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue named Jairus: and seeing him, falleth down at his feet.
23 And he besought him much, saying: My daughter is at the point of death, come, lay thy hand upon her, that she may be safe, and may live. 24 And he went with him, and a great multitude followed him, and they thronged him. 25 And a woman who was under an issue of blood twelve years, 26 And had suffered many things from many physicians; and had spent all that she had, and was nothing the better, but rather worse, 27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the crowd behind him, and touched his garment. 28 For she said: If I shall touch but his garment, I shall be whole. 29 And forthwith the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the evil. 30 And immediately Jesus knowing in himself the virtue that had proceeded from him, turning to the multitude, said: Who hath touched my garments? 31 And his disciples said to him: Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou who hath touched me? 32 And he looked about to see her who had done this. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 34 And he said to her: Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole: go in peace, and be thou whole of thy disease. 35 While he was yet speaking, some come from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying: Thy daughter is dead: why dost thou trouble the master any further? 36 But Jesus having heard the word that was spoken, saith to the ruler of the synagogue: Fear not, only believe. 37 And he admitted not any man to follow him, but Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. 38 And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he seeth a tumult, and people weeping and wailing much. 39 And going in, he saith to them: Why make you this ado, and weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. 40 And they laughed him to scorn. But he having put them all out, taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. 41 And taking the damsel by the hand, he saith to her: Talitha cumi, which is, being interpreted: Damsel (I say to thee) arise. 42 And immediately the damsel rose up, and walked: and she was twelve years old: and they were astonished with a great astonishment. 43 And he charged them strictly that no man should know it: and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
Commentary: Saint Mark - Chapter 5
Verse 2. Vulgate: Homo in spiritu immundo, “a man in (or of) an unclean spirit,” or a man having an unclean spirit, namely, possessed by a devil. (See commentary at chapter 1, verse 23.)
Verse 7. I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not. Because the devil knew that Christ would grant nothing to his merits or prayers, he interposes the name of God, to which he knew Christ gave the highest reverence. It was as though he said, “I entreat Thee, by the authority of the divine name (which I know to be sacred and holy to Thee), I beseech and implore Thee, and as far as I can, I constrain Thee, that Thou wilt not cast me out of this body, and banish me to hell.” For this was the greatest torment to a demon.
Verse 9. My name is Legion (Syriac, “our name is Legion,” meaning “we are a legion of devils”; hence he adds by way of explanation), for we are many. A legion strictly speaking contained 6,666 soldiers. See what is said in Matthew 26:53. In this passage, though, a certain number is put for an uncertain. Note, the devil is God’s ape. Hence he imitates God, who is “the Lord of hosts,” that is, of angels. In a like way the devil calls himself Legion, because he leads many companions out of their gathering into the line of battle to fight against God and His faithful people. Hence men have every reason to dread that battle, knowing that their warfare is not with men, but devils, and those many in number, who conspire for their destruction. Therefore, they ought to implore and obtain the help of God and the holy angels, as Eliseus did (4 Kings 6:17). I have made other remarks at Matth. 8:28.
Verse 21. And when Jesus had passed again in the ship over the strait. In Greek, διαπεράσαντος, i.e., when He had crossed by boat to the opposite shore of the Sea of Galilee.
Verse 25. And a woman who was under an issue of blood twelve years. This woman was from Cæsarea Philippi, which was formerly called “Dan,” and afterwards “Paneas,” and finally “Cæsarea.” This is the celebrated woman who, being healed by Christ of her issue of blood, erected in memory of so great a benefit that statue to Christ at Cæsarea Philippi portraying the incident, from whose base grew an herb which, when it touched Christ’s hem [in the holy Eucharist], cured all diseases, according to Eusebius (lib. 7 Histor. cap. 14), Sozomen (lib. 5 cap. 21) and Theophylact (in loco). Julian the Apostate, an enemy of Christ, threw the statue down, and set up one of himself in its place. But this was shattered to pieces by lightning, as Sozomen testifies, and the Tripartite History (lib. 6 cap. 19). The innovators of our day, who cast away, submerge, or burn the relics of the saints, while they preserve and venerate the relics of their own leaders, act like Julian the Apostate. For the Zwinglians, or followers of Zwingli, preserve with great devotion his heart, which was found among the ashes when he was burnt. So says Capito in his Life of Zwingli.
It is not probable that this woman who had the issue of blood was Martha, the sister of Mary Magdalen, as S. Ambrose thinks (lib. de Salomone cap. 5). For Martha lived at Bethany, near Jerusalem, not at Cæsarea in Phoenicia. The gospel of Nicodemus says that her name was Veronica, the same who gave Christ a handkerchief to wipe the sweat when He was going to be crucified, and on which He left an impression of His face. But this gospel is apocryphal and of uncertain authenticity.
Verse 26. And was nothing the better, but rather worse. In Arabic, “but had added to her pain.”
Verse 27. [She] came in the crowd behind him. Because she did not dare to approach Him plainly to His face, both out of reverence for Christ, and also because she was unclean from the flow of blood, says the Scholiast in S. Chrysostom. Unclean, I say, both legally (for the law of Moses determined that those were unclean and to be kept away from the temple who suffered from a flow of blood), and also physically, for this unhealthy flow of blood is foul and pollutes those who touch the sick person. And touched his garment.
Verse 28. For she said: If I shall touch but his garment, I shall be whole. Matthew 9:20, instead of garment has the hem of his garment. This hem was a fringe of threads attached or sewn to the bottom of the robe, of a hyacinth or violet color, which God commanded the Jews to wear, that it might put them continually in mind of God’s precepts and of heaven itself. This Christ wore, according to the law, as a mark that He belonged to the Jewish race and religion. (See commentary at Numbers 15:38.)
There is here an example and proof of the use and efficacy of holy relics. For such was the hem or fringe of Christ which healed her that had the issue of blood. Calvin replies that the woman was superstitious, and that a certain amount of superstition was mingled with what she did. But Christ and Mark refute this; for they ascribe her healing not to superstition, but to her faith, and commend her for it. For in verse 30 it says, And immediately Jesus knowing in himself the virtue that had proceeded from him, i.e., from His fringe. And verse 34, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole: go in peace. Rightly says S. Hilary, “Just as the author of nature has given to a magnet the power of attracting iron, so did Christ give to His garment the power of healing her who touched in faith.” And if it were so with a garment, how much more with the Eucharist? Hence S. Gorgonia was healed of a severe disease by touching the Eucharist, according to Nazianzen (orat. 11). So, too, was S. Catherine of Siena, and many others. See our Salmeron (tom. 6, tract. 15, in fine).
Verse 29. And forthwith the fountain of her blood was dried up. That is, the flow of blood ceased, which constantly gushed forth from her body as though from a perpetual fountain. Hence the Arabic translates, “and immediately the course of her blood ceased.”
Tropologically, the issue of blood, says Bede, is fleshly delight, such as gluttony, luxury, etc. The most pure Flesh of Christ heals these when piously received in the Eucharist.
Verse 30. And immediately Jesus knowing in himself the virtue that had proceeded from him. And had healed the hemorrhaging woman; not as if any quality had gone out from Christ’s hem, or as if this power had gone from place to place, from Christ’s hem into the woman who had the issue of blood, but by reason of the effect which it produced in the woman. For the virtue abiding in Christ wrought the effect of healing in the woman. “Just as the learning of doctors,” saith Theophylact, “is said to be communicated to their disciples and poured out into them,” when, nevertheless, the learning itself remains in the doctors, and produces its effect only, that is, a like knowledge in the disciples.
Note, this virtue of healing and working all sorts of miracles, conferred by the Word upon the humanity of Christ, was not a physical quality. For that would have been infinite, as having divine and infinite efficacy, of which the humanity of Christ was not capable, being created. But it was a moral quality, that is to say, an instrumental virtue. For the humanity of Christ did these things as an instrument of the divinity. Thus Abulensis (q. 102 in cap. 9 Matth.) and Salmeron (loc. cit.).
Who hath touched My garments? “Christ asks this question,” says Bede, “that the healing which He had given to the woman, being declared and made known, might advance in many the virtue of faith, and draw them to believe in Christ.” The Scholiast in Chrysostom adds that it was in order to proclaim and celebrate the woman’s faith; but Theophylact mentions a third reason, in order to free the woman from fear.
Verse 33. But the woman fearing, and trembling; knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. Fearing and trembling, not because she had committed a sin of superstition, as Calvin would have it, but because she had approached secretly, and, unclean, had touched Christ who was clean, and had, as it were, stolen a gift of healing from Christ without His knowledge. Therefore, she was afraid lest Christ should rebuke her, or lest He should demand back and revoke the benefit, or afflict her with a worse evil. Hence it is plain that she had not perfect faith and hope in Christ, or she would not have thought that she could hide from Him, nor would she have been so afraid of Him. Hence Christ said, to reassure her, Be of good heart, daughter, as Matthew 9:22 says. Thus Chrysostom (ibid.).
Verse 34. And he said to her: Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole. Christ here confirms the healing which had been conferred upon this woman, who feared that Christ might punish her for being furtive with a relapse or some other evil. It was as though He commanded that the healing be permanent, saying to her, “Not My mere fringe, which thou hast touched with great faith of obtaining a cure, hath saved thee, woman, but chiefly My omnipotence, but secondarily thine own faith. For this, either as a disposition or as a merit or a meritorious cause, has delivered thee from the issue of blood, which deliverance I ratify, that is, confirm and strengthen.”
Go in peace. “He sends her to the ultimate of all good things,” says the Scholiast in Chrysostom. “For God dwells in peace, that she may know that she is cleansed from her sins as well.” For whom Christ hath healed in body, He likewise hath sanctified in soul.
Verse 39. The damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. “For although she is really dead, yet she shall be forthwith awakened by Me from death as from sleep. Therefore she seems to be, not so much dead (with the death that lasts forever), as sleeping.” Or, as the Scholiast in S. Jerome says, “To you she is dead, to Me she sleepeth.”
Verse 41. Talitha cumi. In Hebrew a boy is called דלי ieled, for which the Syrians and Chaldeans say tali, from which is derived the feminine talitha, that is, “girl.” Cumi means “arise,” commanding her who is lying dead to arise from the bed and stand, alive. Moreover, “that Mark might give greater emphasis [ἐµφατικώτερον], and express the sense of one who called and commanded, he added, I say unto thee,” remarks S. Jerome (lib. de Optimo Genere Interpretandi).
Verse 42. And immediately the damsel rose up, and walked. That she might show she was alive. Mystically, Bede says, “Because the soul, when raised from sin, ought not only to arise from the filth of its wickedness, but should also advance in good works.”
Verse 43. And commanded that something should be given her to eat. In Arabic, “and said: Feed her,” that He might show that she not only had arisen, but was in good health and hungry. For when they awake from sleep, boys and girls are wont to be hungry and ask for food, if they are well and strong, for then they consume many calories, and while sleeping they have digested all the food from the previous day. And death was for her a kind of sleep, as Christ says in verse 39.

So I’ve been kinda fed up with listening to ‘Christians’ talk about Mormonism, so to take a break from that I decided to start doing something that would piss off some Bible Thumpers: read the Quran.
To be fair, though, I’m not exactly reading it, I’m listening to an audiobook version.
Anyways, I thought I’d record my thoughts and impressions here. I don’t know too much about Islam, but I thought it might be interesting to look at another faith’s holy book through a Mormon lens.
For the record this is the version I’m listening to.
This all just gonna be string of consciousness stuff as I ‘read’. I’ll try and and give references to where I’m reading from, but I might get things wrong. Sorry if I ramble.
First part is the introduction from the translator.
Just hearing about what the Quran is I think It's not fair to compare it to the Bible or the Book of Mormon. It’s not a narrative story. It's more like Doctrine & Covenants; a collection of revelations around specific circumstances that have wide application by virtue of being The Word of God.
First Chapter: The Opening
It begins with a sort of prayer to God. It's very short and very nice. I like it.
Second Chapter: The Heifer
Next part has a retelling of the Adam and Eve story and little of the creation. Not as detailed as the Bible, but it hits the important points.
It quickly runs through the story of Moses, again, less detailed than the Bible, but hits important points. I guess in Islam they must also read the Torah or some equivalent? Or at least there’s an oral tradition? The text references Biblical stories a lot. So there’s gotta be some way for them to be familiar with them. I’m just wondering how.
It talks about some confirmation bias. People who reject the truth before them because it doesn't fit the truth they want. There's also some talk of hardening hearts. Sounds familiar.
"They say We believe in the what has been revealed to us, while they deny what has been sent down after." -“A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible.” 2 Nephi 29:6
"Those are a people who have passed away, what they did is theirs, what you do is yours" I think this is specifically talking about Abraham and Isaac, but it reminds me of the sec Article of Faith “We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.”
There's a part here talking about the direction to pray (towards Mecca) and it seems like to main purpose is to help make a distinction between Muslims and other faiths (Christians and Jews are named). Makes me think of the way we often, though not always, have our temples face east or towards Salt Lake. It's not an exact parallel, but I, like Ultron, find the geometry of faith... fascinating.
There's some dietary restrictions here: "Eat the wholesome things...He has forbidden you only blood, carrion and the flesh of swine." So, no blood (does that include raw steak?) or pork, and I'm guessing carrion means animals that weren't slaughtered but died on their own? I imagine that, like with the Word of Wisdom there's room for interpretation.
There's some talk of fasting, and it goes into some detail. One thing I like is that "for those who can fast only with extreme difficulty, there is a way to compensate, the feeding of a needy person". I see fast offering parallels, but I have some righteous envy that this clear alternative to fasting is played out so clearly.
Apparently Ramadan is the month that the Quran was given And that's why they fast for it? I actually didn't know that. Neat!
I also like how there's a provision that if you're sick or traveling during Ramadan, you can just shift your fast. So if I'm horribly sick the first three days, I can just start and end three days later. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but that's how I understand it.
"God desires ease for you, not hardship." - “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.” 2 Nephi 2:25
Lotta talk about pilgrimage. I'm guessing this is the pilgrimage to Mecca, unless there's another one I don't know about. It kinda makes me think of Trek, which feels like a decentralized, youth focused, small scale pilgrimage of sorts. I know people have all kinds of problems with Trek, but I think looking at it through that lens makes it more meaningful? I dunno. Weird thought. Rambling.
"They ask you, Prophet, about intoxicants and gambling. Say, there is great sin in both, although they have some benefit to people." -strong drink is not for the belly WoW
There's a section that lays out a lot of rules around marriage, divorce, and family. Clear rules like this are unusual to me. Most rules in Mormon scriptures are squishier. Vague and open to interpretation unless clarified by modern policy. I imagine there's plenty of modern Muslims that have arguments that make these rules squishy, but it's just unusual for me to see clear rules like that.
I guess the Mormon approach is "Learn correct principles, govern yourself" and I do like that, but I can also see the appeal and draw of this sort of "Book of the Law" approach. Both have value, benefits, and drawbacks. It's just an interesting contrast. Having clear rules set out in scripture like this would definitely encourage careful study and scholarship of the text, but it can become ridged and dated. The squishy method allows for more adaptability, but that can get pretty far out of hand if you’re not careful.
I think overall so far, it’s nice, I like it. The only issue I have is that there’s a kind of ‘combative’ tone. By which I mean, there’s a lot of, “these people do this, and you shouldn’t” from what little I know about Islamic history, that sort of boundary marking makes sense. It was and is important and necessary to differentiate your faith from others in this way. But it just rubs up against my Utah Mormon sensibilities. Us Mormons HATE confrontation, even with other Mormons. We try and get along and not pick fights or cause a fuss, so this more combative, defensive approach from a religious text makes me a little uncomfy. I’m not saying it’s bad or wrong. It’s just different from what I’m used to. Besides, it’s not like I can change it, so I’ll just live with it.
That’s as far as I got for now.

Reading 1
2 SM 15:13-14, 30; 16:5-13
An informant came to David with the report, “The children of Israel have transferred their loyalty to Absalom.” At this, David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerusalem: “Up! Let us take flight, or none of us will escape from Absalom. Leave quickly, lest he hurry and overtake us, then visit disaster upon us and put the city to the sword.”
As David went up the Mount of Olives, he wept without ceasing. His head was covered, and he was walking barefoot. All those who were with him also had their heads covered and were weeping as they went.
As David was approaching Bahurim, a man named Shimei, the son of Gera of the same clan as Saul’s family, was coming out of the place, cursing as he came. He threw stones at David and at all the king’s officers, even though all the soldiers, including the royal guard, were on David’s right and on his left. Shimei was saying as he cursed: “Away, away, you murderous and wicked man! The LORD has requited you for all the bloodshed in the family of Saul, in whose stead you became king, and the LORD has given over the kingdom to your son Absalom. And now you suffer ruin because you are a murderer.” Abishai, son of Zeruiah, said to the king: “Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over, please, and lop off his head.” But the king replied: “What business is it of mine or of yours, sons of Zeruiah, that he curses? Suppose the LORD has told him to curse David; who then will dare to say, ‘Why are you doing this?’” Then the king said to Abishai and to all his servants: “If my own son, who came forth from my loins, is seeking my life, how much more might this Benjaminite do so? Let him alone and let him curse, for the LORD has told him to. Perhaps the LORD will look upon my affliction and make it up to me with benefits for the curses he is uttering this day.” David and his men continued on the road, while Shimei kept abreast of them on the hillside, all the while cursing and throwing stones and dirt as he went.
Responsorial Psalm
PS 3:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
R./ Lord, rise up and save me.
O LORD, how many are my adversaries! Many rise up against me! Many are saying of me, “There is no salvation for him in God.” R./ Lord, rise up and save me.
But you, O LORD, are my shield; my glory, you lift up my head! When I call out to the LORD, he answers me from his holy mountain. R./ Lord, rise up and save me.
When I lie down in sleep, I wake again, for the LORD sustains me. I fear not the myriads of people arrayed against me on every side. R./ Lord, rise up and save me.
Gospel
MK 5:1-20
Jesus and his disciples came to the other side of the sea, to the territory of the Gerasenes. When he got out of the boat, at once a man from the tombs who had an unclean spirit met him. The man had been dwelling among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, even with a chain. In fact, he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shackles smashed, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the hillsides he was always crying out and bruising himself with stones. Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and prostrated himself before him, crying out in a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me!” (He had been saying to him, “Unclean spirit, come out of the man!”) He asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “Legion is my name. There are many of us.” And he pleaded earnestly with him not to drive them away from that territory.
Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside. And they pleaded with him, “Send us into the swine. Let us enter them.” And he let them, and the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine. The herd of about two thousand rushed down a steep bank into the sea, where they were drowned. The swineherds ran away and reported the incident in the town and throughout the countryside. And people came out to see what had happened. As they approached Jesus, they caught sight of the man who had been possessed by Legion, sitting there clothed and in his right mind. And they were seized with fear. Those who witnessed the incident explained to them what had happened to the possessed man and to the swine. Then they began to beg him to leave their district. As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed pleaded to remain with him. But Jesus would not permit him but told him instead, “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.” Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him; and all were amazed.

January 29, 2024 - Monday 4th Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Gospel
Mark 5:1-20
Jesus and his disciples came to the other side of the sea,
to the territory of the Gerasenes.
When he got out of the boat,
at once a man from the tombs who had an unclean spirit met him.
The man had been dwelling among the tombs,
and no one could restrain him any longer, even with a chain.
In fact, he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains,
but the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shackles smashed,
and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
Night and day among the tombs and on the hillsides
he was always crying out and bruising himself with stones.
Catching sight of Jesus from a distance,
he ran up and prostrated himself before him,
crying out in a loud voice,
"What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?
I adjure you by God, do not torment me!"
(He had been saying to him, "Unclean spirit, come out of the man!")
He asked him, "What is your name?"
He replied, "Legion is my name. There are many of us."
And he pleaded earnestly with him
not to drive them away from that territory.
Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside.
And they pleaded with him,
"Send us into the swine. Let us enter them."
And he let them, and the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine.
The herd of about two thousand rushed down a steep bank into the sea,
where they were drowned.
The swineherds ran away and reported the incident in the town
and throughout the countryside.
And people came out to see what had happened.
As they approached Jesus,
they caught sight of the man who had been possessed by Legion,
sitting there clothed and in his right mind.
And they were seized with fear.
Those who witnessed the incident explained to them what had happened
to the possessed man and to the swine.
Then they began to beg him to leave their district.
As he was getting into the boat,
the man who had been possessed pleaded to remain with him.
But Jesus would not permit him but told him instead,
"Go home to your family and announce to them
all that the Lord in his pity has done for you."
Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis
what Jesus had done for him; and all were amazed.

Luke 15:10-32
[10]In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." The Prodigal Son
[11]And He said, "A man had two sons.
[12]The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the estate that falls to me.' So he divided his wealth between them.
[13]And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant country, and there he squandered his estate with loose living.
[14]Now when he had spent everything, a severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be impoverished.
[15]So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
[16]And he would have gladly filled his stomach with the pods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving anything to him.
[17]But when he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger!
[18]I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight;
[19]I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men."'
[20]So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.
[21]And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'
[22]But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet;
[23]and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;
[24]for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.' And they began to celebrate.
[25]"Now his older son was in the field, and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.
[26]And he summoned one of the servants and began inquiring what these things could be.
[27]And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has received him back safe and sound.'
[28]But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and his father came out and began pleading with him.
[29]But he answered and said to his father, 'Look! For so many years I have been serving you and I have never neglected a command of yours; and yet you have never given me a young goat, so that I might celebrate with my friends;
[30]but when this son of yours came, who has devoured your wealth with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.'
[31]And he said to him, 'Son, you have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours.
[32]But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.'"

Animal Feed Market Revenue, Major Players, Consumer Trends, Analysis & Forecast Till 2029
Food items produced and grown for ruminants, poultry, swine, aquatic animals, etc. are referred to as animal feed. The opportunities for the animal feed market to grow during the forecast period are being driven by rapid urbanization, rising meat consumption, and rising consumption of other end products like milk and eggs across various regions. Through the addition of enriched nutrients to the feed, the acceleration of growth and weight gain, and the development of immunity, the feed aids in improving the animal's abilities. By the end of 2050, the United Nations predicts that the world's appetite for food will have increased by more than 50%. To do this, animal food production must increase from its current level by almost two times for poultry, swine, and beef, and by about three times for dairy and fish. Aquaculture is predicted to grow by about 90%, dairy products are predicted to increase by about 55%, and meat production is predicted to increase by about 70% globally.
According to Marketlook Consulting’s research report “Global Animal Feed Market Analysis, 2021”, the Global Animal Feed market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 3.5% during 2022-29 The market would reach USD 616.87 Bn by 2029.

Moreover, the report also encompasses the key strategic imperatives for success for competitors along with strategic factorial indexing measuring competitors’ capabilities on 16 parameters. This will help companies in the formulation of Go to Market Strategies and identifying the blue ocean for its offerings.
Asia Pacific Dominated the Market
Due to a sizable consumer base, particularly in the developing economies of China and India, the animal feed market in the Asia Pacific region is estimated to hold a sizeable market share. The forecasted market growth is being aided by an expanding middle-class population with rising family incomes. Consumers are more willing to spend money to satisfy their nutritional needs outside of a regular diet of cereals. During the forecast period, this region is anticipated to grow at the fastest CAGR as stated in the Marketlook Consulting research report “Global Animal Feed Market Analysis, 2021”.
According to Marketlook Consulting’, the key players with a considerable market share in the global Animal Feed market are Archer-Daniels-Midland Company, Cargill Incorporated, Charoen Pokphand Group, Dupont De Nemours Inc., Evonik Industries AG (RAG-Stiftung), ForFarmers N.V., Kemin Industries Inc., Nutreco N.V. Mark 5 (New King James Version)
1 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.
2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains,
4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him.
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him.
7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me."
8 For He said to him, "Come out of the man, unclean spirit!"
9 Then He asked him, "What is your name?" And he answered, saying, "My name is Legion; for we are many."
10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.
11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains.
12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, "Send us to the swine, that we may enter them."
13 And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.
14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened.
15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.
16 And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine.
17 Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region.
18 And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him.
19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you."
20 And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.
21 Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea.
22 And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet
23 and begged Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live."
24 So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him.
25 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years,
26 and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.
27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment.
28 For she said, "If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well."
29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My clothes?"
31 But His disciples said to Him, "You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, Who touched Me?' "
32 And He looked around to see her who had done this thing.
33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
34 And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction."
35 While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?"
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid; only believe."
37 And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
38 Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly.
39 When He came in, He said to them, "Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping."
40 And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying.
41 Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, "Talitha, cumi," which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, arise."
42 Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement.
43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.

Luke 8:26-39 KJV
26 And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.
31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
34 When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.
35 Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.
37 Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.
38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,
39 Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.
