Eurythmics - Touch (1983)

"Growing up, my parents used to listen to Here Comes The Rain Again by Eurythmics, so that’s how I got in touch with it. Of course, Annie Lennox has a very distinctive voice and that was one of the first things I really started singing along to, so in that sense it’s a part of my own musical development.

Throughout the years I’ve started to appreciate her as a songwriter more and more. These are very old songs, and yet everybody still knows them – they’re timeless. They’ve been covered to bits, and unfortunately the covers usually aren’t better, but it says something about how good this song is and how timeless it is."

Alanis Morisette - Jagged Little Pill (1995)

"Like Annie Lennox, Alanis Morissette formed me and my interest in singing. I was about thirteen when I first heard You Oughta Know. She has her heart on her tongue and she always puts it right there as she means it; it’s very to the point.

The funny thing is now she’s been part of a little film about highly sensitive people [Sensitive: The Untold Story]. She’s in there, talking about the combination of being a highly sensitive person and an artist and of course, as an artist and a highly sensitive woman, I could really identify myself in her stories and reconnect with her at a much later age, in a sense. "It Must Have Been Love by Roxette is great sing-a-long music. It’s pretty uncomplicated, super Swedish, very well-written, very well-performed, and one that I just sang and sang! This was also played a lot in the car – you’d have to ask my mum and dad what those journeys were like, my sister and I sang their ears bloody [laughs]! It’s definitely true that the Swedes are great songwriters. It was hard to choose just one song, but this one is as good as any from that time, I think."

"I first heard The Gathering on the radio. I was listening to a lot of grunge and rock but not much metal yet; that came with Pantera and Machine Head, bands that I really liked, but nothing with a female voice that could really work for me.

There were some female singers, but they were all high and operatic, and I was missing that power – until I heard The Gathering. Strange Machines just did it for me. That was the first step for me in thinking, I wanna sing in a metal band too! Anneke [van Giersbergen] is opening a few of my solo shows for me this year."

Skunk Anansie - Paranoid And Sunburnt (1995)

"When Weak by Skunk Anansie came out, everything about them was revolutionary. Skin was Black, bald, and gay, a lot of things that people have issues with, but the way she kicked against that – 'I am the way I am and if you don’t like it, too bad for you' – that in itself was so inspiring for a young girl growing up.

But what she did with her voice, those long howls and the effortless highs, that was right up my alley. Back in the day I played that album, Paranoid & Sunburnt, until it was just threads."

Halestorm - The Strange Case Of... (2012)

"I’m not sure exactly how I stumbled upon I Miss The Misery, but that was the first thing I heard from Halestorm. The first thing Lzzy Hale does in the song is this howl, and she really got me on the first note – that’s rare. I was like, “okay, damn!” It’s very American-produced and that hook of “whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh” is pretty cheesy, but it totally works!

I’ve seen her live and all I can think is, how on Earth does your voice survive? She screams and kicks and grunts and everything she does is super cool. Lzzy is a powerhouse, she stands for being feminine in a man’s world and describing her feelings quite to the point in her lyrics."

Evergrey - A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament) (2022)

"Every day on tour in Europe with Nightwish I’ve played Midwinter Calls by Evergrey when I’m putting on make-up. I started listening to them in their early years, when they were still full-on prog.

But what I really appreciate is how every album has something different, how they as a band and Tom [Englund] as a singer-songwriter keep evolving. He has a lot of pop influences in how he sings, and soul and jazz. The common thread throughout this list is singers – you can write great songs, but if the singer doesn’t work for me, I probably won’t last throughout the song just because I can’t get over a voice that I can’t appreciate."

Symphony X - Underworld (2015)

"Without You by Symphony X is a very emotional song, but it’s a great example of what I really appreciate about Russell Allen, which is that he manages to be the glue in a prog song that can otherwise be incredibly complex, by making melodies that are followable and even catchy, and that has made it for me.

That’s why I can listen to Symphony X. He has this full-bodied rocky sound, and his biggest virtue as far as I’m concerned is that he can sing from his heart. You can hear that he means it. I’ve learned a lot from him, he gave me some really wise lessons that I will never forget: that even in stage performance, you can’t always just give everything away. Build it up."

Sam Ryder - There's Nothing But Space, Man! (2022)

"Sam Ryder has an amazing voice, it’s quite diverse: he can go from almost Queen-like singing, to very poppy, to something more like Muse. What inspires me about him is that he’s a self-made man in the modern days, singing his head off on the Internet for God knows how long without anything really happening for him until he was just lifted up and thrown into the world, and seemingly just being the same guy throughout it all, you know?

I hope he can stay himself throughout the whole pressure that’s on his shoulders, as it is right now. I hope he survives the madness of that."

Queen - Innuendo (1991)

"If you make a playlist where singers are your common thread, you can’t really make one without Freddie Mercury. It’s hard to choose one Queen song, but The Show Must Go On is one that we once covered with After Forever.

Speaking about singing from the heart, his vocal interpretation is still one of the best that has ever been. That’s not something you can learn, it’s just something you have – something that he had. This song stands for pushing through even when things are shit, and that sentence often goes through my head when I’m thinking that I don’t know if I can do this: the show must go on.

It’s empowering. It’s so beautiful. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, as music should be. That’s the beauty of writing. If I didn’t have the list I’ve just presented to inspire me, where would I be? I’m very grateful there are so many that went before me.

Gli altri sport: Tom Pryce

Una carriera breve, ma luminosa, nella Formula Uno degli anni Settanta… Thomas Maldwyn Pryce era nato l’11 giugno 1949 a Ruthin, un paesino del Galles, da una famiglia di origini modeste. Il padre Jack era poliziotto, la madre Gwyneth infermiera e Mal, come veniva chiamato dagli amici, crebbe con il mito di Jim Clark nella testa, ma solo dopo aver assaporato a dieci anni l’ebbrezza di guidare un furgone, capì che quella era la sua strada. Dopo molti sacrifici Tom finalmente cominciò a correre nel 1970 in Formula Ford, per poi passare, nel 1971, alla Formula Super Vee e l’anno successivo arrivare in Formula tre, dove nonostante indiscutibile classe e velocità, durante una gara si fratturò una gamba contro le barriere. Tom venne poi notato da Ron Dennis che gli offrì un posto nella sua squadra di Formula 2, la Rondel Racing ed i risultati ottenuti lo portarono a firmare un contratto per la Token, una scuderia minore di Formula 1, nel 1974. Pryce debuttò il 12 maggio a Nivelles, in Belgio con un 20° posto in qualifica ottenuto con una monoposto non molto competitiva e, a causa di una collisione con la Tyrrell di Jody Scheckter, dovette ritrarsi. A Montecarlo gli venne rifiutata, da parte degli organizzatori, l’iscrizione al Gran Premio, che addussero come motivazione la scarsa esperienza del pilota. Pryce non la prese bene, ma l’esclusione dalla gara monegasca gli diede l’occasione per prendersi la sua personale rivincita con il circuito di Montecarlo, e soprattutto per garantirgli un posto stabile in Formula Uno grazie all’invito del team Ippocampos Racing, che gli mise a disposizione una March 743 per la gara di Formula 3 del sabato. La prestazione di Tom in quell’occasione fu stupefacente, infatti dominò le prove con un tempo di 1.6 secondi migliore del secondo classificato in griglia, in gara demolì ogni avversario, vincendo sia la propria manche con quindici secondi di vantaggio, che la finale, lasciando a ventuno secondi il secondo classificato Tony Brise. Dopo quella clamorosa dimostrazione Alan Ress, alla ricerca di un sostituto dopo la morte di Peter Revson all’inizio di quell’anno in un incidente durante un test a Kyalami in Sud Africa, riuscì facilmente a convincere Don Nicholson, ex agente CIA e patron del Team Shadow, a considerare l’ingaggio del giovane gallese per la squadra e Pryce firmò poco tempo dopo. Il debutto avviene in Olanda nel 1974, ed il legame tra Pryce e la Shadow continuò tra alti e bassi fino al Gran Premio del Sud Africa del 5 marzo 1977 a Kyalami. In quel giorno James Hunt era primo in pole position con la sua McLaren Marlboro, seguito dalla Brabham di Carlos Pace e dalla Ferrari di Niki Lauda. Al via erano ventitré i piloti, con Hunt che andò subito in testa, ma la rossa di Lauda lo infilò al settimo giro, distaccando gli avversari e continuò così fino alla bandiera a scacchi. andando a cogliere la sua tredicesima vittoria in Formula Uno e, per la Shadow, la squadra di Don Nichols, correvano Renzo Zorzi e Tom Pryce. Nel ventunesimo giro Renzo Zorzi parcheggiò la sua Shadow nell’erba, a lato della pista, proprio davanti ai box, dato che dal posteriore si notava un principio di incendio, così due commissari corsero verso la monoposto, attraversando la pista dietro al dosso, con gli estintori in mano. In quel momento arrivarono la March di Hans Stuck, la Shadow di Pryce e la Ligier di Jaques Laffitte. Stuck, scavalcato il dosso che impediva la vista di tutto il rettilineo si accorse all’ultimo del pericolo in pista e riuscì d evitare il primo inserviente, ma Pryce, coperto dalla March del tedesco, centrò in pieno il secondo, lo studente olandese Frederik Jansen van Vuuren, travolgendolo. Dalla Shadow di Pryce si staccò il musetto e si ruppe il roll bar, ma la macchina continuò la sua corsa, poi sbandò sulla destra, strisciò con il guard rail mentre Laffite la stava superando. Infine in prossimità della curva Crowthorne, la Shadow rientrò in pista dopo aver urtato contro l’uscita per veicoli d’emergenza e centrò in pieno la vettura di Laffite che stava curvando, trascinandola contro le reti, dove terminò la sua corsa. Laffite scese dalla sua Ligier e capì che Pryce era ancora al volante della sua Shadow, ma era ormai senza vita. Infatti l’estintore che Frederik Jansen van Vuuren aveva in mano, nell’impatto ad oltre 270 km/h aveva colpito la testa di Tom Pryce. Il pilota gallese venne estratto dalla vettura e, nonostante tutto, trasportato verso l’ospedale in autoambulanza mentre la corsa continuava. Anche lo stesso vincitore del Gran Premio, Niki Lauda , urtò un frammento rimasto sulla pista del roll-bar della Shadow, che si infilò nel radiatore sinistro del raffreddamento provocando una lenta perdita di liquido e mettendo a rischio la gara dell’austriaco che terminò la gara col motore surriscaldato. Tom Pryce oggi è ricordato da molti come un pilota semplice, di umili origini, ma con una gran forza di volontà, la sua tomba si trova nella chiesa di San Bartolomeo di Otford, vicino a Sevenoaks, nel Kent. Modena: IMA al Teatro Storchi sabato 25 marzo. Sabato 25 marzo alle ore 19.00 va in scena in prima nazionale al Teatro Storchi di Modena "IMA", il progetto per cinque danzatori della compagnia Komoco diretta da Sofia Nappi, coreografa, danzatrice di formazione internazionale, che sta conseguendo a Tel Aviv la certificazione come insegnante di tecnica Gaga, il linguaggio sviluppato dal celebre Ohad Naharin. L’appuntamento rientra nell’ambito di CARNE, la rassegna di drammaturgia fisica che Emilia Romagna Teatro ERT / Teatro Nazionale ha ideato con la cura di Michela Lucenti, artista associata. Il programma accompagna le stagioni di ERT a Modena, Bologna e Cesena offrendo un affondo su questo linguaggio che unisce l’arte coreografica con le discipline dello spettacolo dal vivo. Venti minuti di IMA sono stati presentati alla 14esima edizione del Festival di Danza contemporanea della Biennale di Venezia nel 2020, su commissione dalla direttrice Marie Chouinard, mentre la versione integrale è stata ospitata in anteprima al Colours International Dance Festival di Stoccarda nel 2022. Il termine “Ima” in giapponese indica il momento presente, in ebraico significa madre, con un particolare riferimento alla rinascita e al rinnovamento. Questa creazione è stata immaginata durante il periodo di distanziamento sociale da Covid-19: «Siamo stati lasciati soli – commenta Sofia Nappi – nella nostra vera casa, il nostro corpo, dove esiste solo la dimensione temporale del presente, dove il nostro esistere diventa più sensibile alle piccole cose, dove il bisogno di rapporto con l’altro, in assenza di contatto fisico, ci porta a raggiungere un profondo senso di relazione e nostalgia di creazione. Essere soli con il nostro corpo ci fa percepire chiaramente che tutto, dentro e intorno a noi, non si è fermato, ma è in continuo divenire in una danza che è interconnessione di tutte le cose». Nell'involontaria solitudine degli ultimi anni, la coreografa ha percepito ancora più intensamente quanto ambiziosamente pianifichiamo il futuro, quanto ostinatamente ci aggrappiamo al passato, e quanto raramente viviamo il momento presente. IMA indaga le età della vita procedendo al contrario: i cinque interpreti - Lara di Nallo, Valentin Durand, Evelien Jansen, Paolo Piancastelli, Gonçalo Reis – salgono sul palco da anziani, avanzano lenti, danzano felici e un po’ goffi con i loro gilet e bretelle, allungano il corpo al suono di una musica riprodotta da un baule che spingono con fatica. Indossano grandi teste di maschera e interrogano il pubblico sul perché a volte ci sentiamo nella nostra vita come marionette. IMA parla delle maschere dietro cui i nostri sentimenti spesso appassiscono, parla del bagaglio che ci portiamo dietro e che disfiamo per poi riordinarlo, ancora e ancora come in un rituale. Gli interpreti, che non lasciano mai la scena, danzano fino ad abbandonare le maschere della vecchiaia per ritrovarsi in piena giovinezza, invitandoci al presente e alla vita. Ed è proprio questo vivere nell’adesso che cercano questi giovani corpi con le loro teste rugose, strane figure che sembrano provenire da una terra lontana e che si liberano delle maschere e dei ricordi per unirsi alla sensazione fisica della danza del presente. Sofia Nappi, coreografa e danzatrice professionista, si diploma all’Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater a New York per poi approfondire gli studi con Hofesh Shechter a Tel Aviv, dove sta conseguendo la certificazione come insegnante di tecnica Gaga, linguaggio del celebre coreografo Ohad Naharin. Interprete di lavori firmati da artisti di fama internazionale, ha svolto la sua attività di coreografa, danzatrice e formatrice dentro e fuori i confini europei, partecipando a prestigiosi festival e piattaforme, tra cui: La Biennale Danza di Venezia, The Albania Meeting Dance Festival, RomaEuropa, MASDANZA. Come coreografa indipendente crea importanti produzioni per compagnie internazionali come National Theatre Mannheim, Staatsoper Hannover, Scottish National Ballet, Introdans e Nederlands Dans Theater 2. Scritte ed eseguite con ospiti diversi che spaziano da artisti di metal estremo come Fleshgod Apocalypse, Niilo Sevänen (Insomnium) e Björn ‘Speed’ Strid (Soilwork) a maestri della melodia come Tommy Karevik (Kamelot), la leggenda delle tastiere Phil Lanzon (Uriah Heep) o Roel van Helden (Powerwolf) fino a una canzone più unica che rara con Simone Simons, Charlotte Wessels e Myrkur, gli EPICA hanno davvero superato se stessi ancora una volta. Il risultato è un EP che sconvolge la mente e che supera l’ampio respiro abituale di un disco degli EPICA.

Il primo brano che hanno scritto per questo lavoro di sette tracce è stato “The Final Lullaby”, uno scontro intenso e veloce tra gli EPICA e il rock d’avanguardia delle leggende norvegesi Shining (con tanto di sassofono!), impreziosito da uno dei più grandi ritornelli che ascolterete tutto l’anno. “Sono un grande fan degli Shining fin dalla prima volta che li ho sentiti“, spiega il bassista Rob van der Loo. “La nostra intenzione con ‘The Final Lullaby’ era di fare un mash-up tra Epica e Shining, quindi abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stata una buona idea se io avessi proposto alcuni riff tipici degli Shining e loro avessero fatto l’esatto contrario“.

Jip en Janneke vieren hun 70 jarig bestaan

In Nederland is het zelfs een ‘taal’ en in Iran was er commotie over de hond. Annie M.G. Schmidt introduceerde de bekendste buurkinderen van Nederland, die nog altijd niet vervelen.

„De boeken zijn nog steeds onverminderd populair”, vertelt Jessica Jongkind, eigenaresse van kinderboekenwinkel Kiekeboek in Haarlem. „De verhaaltjes zijn herkenbaar en fijn om (voor) te lezen door de korte zinnen. Maar dat is eigenlijk met alles van Annie M.G. Schmidt. Goedgeschreven werk is tijdloos.”

Succesvolle klassieker

Vooral het grote Jip en Janneke-boek, met daarin alle 235 verhaaltjes over de kleutervriendjes, blijft een succesvolle klassieker in de Nederlandse kinderliteratuur. „Het is een populair cadeau om te geven bij een geboorte. Maar überhaupt als je mensen vraagt ’wat moet er in de boekenkast van mijn kind staan’, zullen veel mensen Jip en Janneke als eerste noemen”, weet Jongkind.

De Koningin van de kinderboeken

Fiona Rempt, zelf kinderboekenschrijfster, heeft warme herinneringen aan het ondeugende duo. „Mijn moeder las me het veel voor toen ik klein was, al was ik zelf meer fan van Floddertje en Pluk van de Petteflet. Maar één ding hebben de boeken van M.G. Schmidt gemeen: de meest ongeloofwaardige verhalen zijn superleuk en grappig beschreven, zonder dat ze ridicuul zijn.”

De ’koningin van de kinderboeken’ was dan ook een heel bijzondere vrouw, is Rempt van mening. „Een vrouw die de tijd altijd tegen zich had. Toen ze jong was, was ze als vrouwelijke schrijfster te progressief voor de wereld waarin ze leefde. Toen ze ouder was hoorde ze bij de gevestigde orde en was het de jonge, vrije(re) generatie die weer tegen haar aan trapte. Desondanks heeft ze een belangrijke rol gespeeld voor het kinderboekengenre.”

Op 13 september 1952 publiceerde Het Parool het eerste Jip-en-Jannekeverhaal, waarin Janneke het nieuwe buurmeisje is van Jip. Elk Jip-en-Jannekeverhaal werd door Schmidt in luttele minuten geschreven in het rumoerige redactielokaal van Het Parool. Het laatste verhaal verscheen op 7 september 1957.

Oorspronkelijke karakter

Met het verschijnen van het laatste verhaaltje in 1957 was de geschiedenis van Jip en Janneke niet ten einde. In de jaren zeventig voorzag Fiep Westendorp voor het tijdschrift Bobo alle verhaaltjes van nieuwe tekeningen. Hoewel het hier kleurenillustraties betrof, bleven Jip en Janneke zelf zwart-witfiguurtjes, waardoor het oorspronkelijke karakter van de plaatjes gehandhaafd bleef. Behalve de boekjes zijn er nog talrijke andere Jip-en-Jannekeproducten in de handel gebracht. Het startsein voor deze merchandising werd al in 1959 gegeven toen de firma Dehnert & Jansen Jip-en-Jannekegordijnen op de markt bracht. Het assortiment is in de loop der jaren uitgebreid met legpuzzels, pyjama's, melkbekers, tandenborstels, kinderstoeltjes, lunchtrommels enz. Het meeste hiervan is alleen bij de HEMA te koop.Op 10 oktober 1992 werd in Zaltbommel een beeld van Jip en Janneke (en Takkie) onthuld door Annie M.G. Schmidt en Fiep Westendorp, die in Zaltbommel geboren is. Het beeld is gemaakt door Ton Koops. Vanwege de eenvoud van de taal in de Jip en Janneke-verhaaltjes werd jip-en-janneketaal in het Nederlands in de jaren negentig een algemene aanduiding voor heldere en makkelijke taal bij de overheid en het bedrijfsleven. Voor zover bekend is de geestelijk vader van de term jip-en-janneketaal Peter Zuijdgeest, die eind jaren tachtig voorlichter was bij de gemeente Voorburg. Voor zijn trainingen Begrijpelijk Schrijven voor ambtenaren maakte hij een affiche met de tekst 'Burgemeester Eenhoorn schrijft begrijpelijk. Vindt hij. Maar begrijpelijk voor wie? Jip en Janneke of Einstein?'.

Ot en Sien

De verhaaltjes gaan over het dagelijks leven van twee buurkinderen, Jip en Janneke. De hond Takkie en de poes Siepie zijn belangrijke nevenfiguren. Veel van de verhaaltjes spelen zich af in of rond het huis van een van de twee kinderen. De ouders van Jip en Janneke komen er vaak in voor, in het bijzonder de moeder van Jip. Ook andere familieleden van Jip en Janneke duiken soms op. Sommige belevenissen van Jip en Janneke zijn gebaseerd op dingen die Schmidts zoontje Flip en diens buurmeisje daadwerkelijk samen meemaakten.

De verhaaltjes vertonen enige gelijkenis met Ot en Sien. Zelf verklaarde Schmidt eens in een interview dat ze zich bij het schrijven van de Jip en Janneke-verhalen onbewust door deze oudere kinderboekenserie had laten inspireren.

In 2008 kwam de huidige Nederlandse uitgever, Querido, zelf met een nieuwe Engelse vertaling onder de titel Jip and Janneke. In 2009 werden de verhaaltjes vertaald in het Farsi, maar noch de vertaalster noch de uitgever in Teheran had een licentiecontract met de rechthebbende uitgeverij Querido afgesloten. Niettemin werden 2000 exemplaren gedrukt; de Nederlandse ambassade kocht 500 stuks om uit te delen ter gelegenheid van de opening van de nieuwe locatie van de ambassade in Teheran.

Jip en Janneke zijn twee kleuters (buurkinderen) die heel gewone, dagelijkse dingen meemaken. Elk verhaaltje in deze verzamelbundel is een afgerond geheel en speelt zich af in de kleuterwereld; alles is heel herkenbaar. Een geweldig voorleesboek voor peuters en kleuters vanaf ca. 3 jaar. In sommige verhaaltjes lopen ze zo het weiland in of naar een boer waardoor je denkt aan een landelijk gebied en bij weer andere verhaaltjes stappen ze zo in de bus naar een groot warenhuis en zijn er veel winkels e.d. waardoor je het idee krijgt dat ze in een stedelijk gebied wonen. Dachshund, wienerdog, Takkie-hond, sausage dog; de teckel gaat wereldwijd onder veel verschillende namen door het leven. Het ras bestaat al eeuwen, maar is - hoe leuk ik frenchies en mopsen.

Jip en Janneke boeken worden nog regelmatig voorgelezen voor onze kleuters. Maar wat ook opvalt is dat veel volwassenen de boeken zich nog kunnen herinneren. Het is een bijzonder gegeven geweest!
