One thing I really love about the earlier seasons of Gilmore Girls is how unpolished and real everyone was allowed to look, even including the main characters. The clothes were ordinary and seemed to be chosen for personality instead of "hotness," Lorelai made weird makeup choices sometimes and Rory had days when her hair was a little frizzy and flyaway... The dress Lorelai "made" Rory for the dance REALLY looked like a homemade dress from cheap polyester satin and a wrinkle in the collar that never seems to lie completely flat... They felt like REAL people!
But the later seasons just don't feel the same. I'm happy for the show and their budget that they got clothing sponsorships, and the clothes are pretty to look at, but Lorelai and Rory look perpetually glossy and glamorous in a way that seems out-of-step with their personalities, income level, and situations (just like every other show!) and I MISS IT! I miss the messiness! College Rory should get to lounge around in her pajamas more, or just... SOMETHING! It just doesn't feel the same!

Probably preaching to the choir here, but I find the constant revisionism regarding Christopher Hayden's sporadic attempts at fatherhood rather frustrating.
I often see his fans argue that Lorelai "kept Rory away from him and refused to let him participate" and that "she made it uncomfortable for him." But did she? She declined his marriage proposal because he was uninterested in Rory from the beginning. She left home and moved thirty minutes away, worked her way up to a middle-class life, and made it clear he was free to do whatever the fuck he wanted. We're told he calls Rory every week (I find this unconvincing, but whatever), he sees her on holidays, he knows how to find Rory and Lorelai when he finally visits them 14-15 years after they move there. It sure doesn't sound like Lorelai hid her away and didn't tell Christopher where they lived or refused to allow him to visit her. Not to mention that we are explicitly told in season 1 that she's "always held the door open to her, you just never wanted to use it" and he agrees.
The other thing she tells Rory in that S1 episode is that "he's going to come and go as he pleases, hon, you know that." Contrary to the belief that she kept Rory away from him, she actually is super accommodating any time he wants to show up and contribute and she never rebukes him for all the times he didn't feel like it. She doesn't appear to ever ask him for money or criticize him for being a bad dad and of course, she keeps sleeping with him any time he does anything half-decent. She's raised Rory to think that it's inevitable he's going to treat them like crap and only show up when it's convenient for him and that they can never be mad at him or hold it against him because she didn't marry him when he offered so long ago. The idea that he had a responsibility to Rory regardless of whether Lorelai was willing to be in a relationship with him is not a reality in their world. It doesn't help that both sets of grandparents seem to blame the entire situation on Lorelai and don't expect Christopher to contribute in any way.
And of course, Christopher doesn't really care about Rory. He's mostly eager to act like a dad when there are cracks in Lorelai's relationship with Luke and he senses an opportunity to get in her pants (he usually succeeds at this). Once that opportunity goes away, he disappears. He drops out of Rory's life once Gigi is born. He doesn't appear to be in contact with her after he and Lorelai divorce until it's time for her graduation. After Lorelai stops talking to him once she reconciles with Luke in the post-OS period, he stops talking to Rory, too. Even the offer to pay for the second half of Rory's college education only comes when he inherits a bunch of money he didn't earn and offers to buy *Lorelai* anything she wants until Rory reorients his offer towards something practical. Rory is a means to get to Lorelai and not much more. And of course, we know from AYITL that he sends Gigi away to her mother eventually as well, giving up on her too.
This is not to say that Lorelai always behaves perfectly. She avoids telling Rory about Christopher requesting to make holiday plans with her for a few days and she does a lot to poison Rory against Christopher/Sherry in S3 because SHE'S mad at him for rejecting her and Rory feels she has to take her side. Still, I don't feel this is equal to all of Christopher's neglect and at any rate Rory is a big girl now, a legal adult, and can develop a relationship with her dad beyond her mom if she wants. Christopher doesn't appear to be terribly interested.
(Oh, and the aforementioned S2/S3 behavior is why you shouldn't be best friends with your daughter, as it's inevitable that your hurt feelings will get in the way of what's best for her and her relationship, however frayed, with her other parent. That is another topic, though).
In the end, all this does have a profound effect on Rory. She's often submissive in her relationships (especially with Dean) and lets problems fester instead of dealing with them because that's what's been modeled for her. She also regularly cheats with old boyfriends because her parents taught her that you always have a claim on your first love and that overrides whatever commitment you're currently making. And of course, in the AYITL era she seems to have copied his life patterns a bit too much, as she's got no real incentive to change at this point.
Lorelai wasn't too hard on him. She was way too easy on him and put up with too much of his shit over the years, and that had its own reverberations. Both Lorelai and Rory should have been allowed to be angry at him for his neglect. It never happened.

S2 E6 – Glitch
Lorelai is clearly falling for Chris again before he reveals (awkwardly late in the game) that he's seeing someone and she snaps out of it; this matches the “counterfeit” nature of the relationship portrayed in Glitch
I think there's been a glitch / Five seconds later, I'm fastening myself to you with a stitch / And I'm not even sorry / Nights are so starry, blood moonlit / It must be counterfeit
S2 E7 – Shake It Off
Rory does indeed shake it off in this episode! She stands up for herself against Headmaster Charleston for unduly pressuring her to be more social, and then ends the episode doing exactly what she was criticized for doing before - reading alone at lunch and still ✨thriving✨

S2 E12 – Dear Reader
This song captures Richard’s loneliness and listlessness in this episode, as well as the irony of him constantly badgering Lori with unsolicited advice about her life and job when he is unemployed & clearly miserable
If you knew where I was walking / To a house, not a home, all alone 'cause nobody's there / No one sees when you lose / When you're playing solitaire

If our love died young, I can't bear witness / And it's been so long / But if you ever think you got it wrong / I'm right where you left me
S2 E19 – Out of the Woods
Jess & Rory get in a car accident, a metaphor for their connection getting a little too real, a little too fast
Are we out of the woods? / Remember when you hit the brakes too soon? / 20 stitches in a hospital room / When you started crying, baby, I did too / But when the sun came up, I was looking at you

Is it cool that I said all that? / Is it chill that you're in my head? / 'Cause I know that it's delicate
S3 E4 – Last Great American Dynasty
LGAD’s themes relate perfectly to Lane’s hair-dying rebellion in this episode, as well as the Stars Hollow High students’ fascination with Lorelai’s teen mom journey
There goes the maddest woman this town has ever seen / She had a marvelous time ruinin' everything
S3 E5 – Dancing With Our Hands Tied
This song about the frustration of having to hide a relationship relates well to this episode when Jess fixes the sprinklers for Rory, but turns them back on to allow Dean to come and be the hero – all the while, the two are pushing down their secret feelings for each other

This song always reminds me of Jess’ clear lack of interest in going to the carnival with Rory until he hears Dean is coming, especially the line: sorry for not winning you an arcade ring

Francie causing the rift between Rory and Paris
Did you think we'd be fine? / Still got scars on my back from your knife / So don't think it's in the past / These kinds of wounds they last and they last

Luke and Lorelai breaking up after the wedding and the town seeing they returned separately, starting the rumor mill
Guess who we ran into at the shops? / Walking in circles like she was lost / Didn't you hear? They called it all off / One gasp and then / How did it end?
S5 E14 – Hits Different
Lorelai reeling from the breakup, knowing Luke was the one
Movin' on was always easy for me to do / It hits different / It hits different 'cause it's you
S5 E15 – Death By a Thousand Cuts
Luke and Lorelai still pining for each other during the Fiddler on the Roof love song
And what once was ours is no one's now / I see you everywhere / The only thing we share / Is this small town / You said it was a great love / One for the ages / But if the story's over / Why am I still writing pages? / 'Cause saying goodbye is death by a thousand cuts
S5 E16 – Afterglow
Afterglow is the perfect song to play when Luke comes to Lorelai’s house to reconcile
It's all me in my head / I'm the one who burned us down / But it's not what I meant / I'm sorry that I hurt you / I don't wanna do this to you / I don't wanna lose this with you
S5 E17 – Blank Space
Logan getting jealous when Rory goes to the party with Robert and acting a fool
I get drunk on jealousy / But you'll come back each time you leave
S5 E18 – Now That We Don't Talk
Rory and Logan’s communication gone cold

S5 E19 – I Know Places
Logan extricating Rory from his disastrous family dinner
Let them say what they want, we won't hear it / Loose lips sink ships all the damn time / Not this time
S5 E20 – I Knew You Were Trouble
Lorelai is clearly not a huge fan of Logan’s antics in this episode, and she calls him out on it
S5 E21 –
New Year's Day
This song is the perfect fit for the sweet scene in the limo between Luke & Lorelai
You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi / I can tell that it's gonna be a long road / I'll be there if you're the toast of the town, babe / Or if you strike out and you're crawling home
Fresh Out the Slammer
The theme song for when Rory & Logan get arrested for stealing the yacht, lol
Now, pretty baby, I'm running back home to you / Fresh out the slammer, I know who my first call will be to
S5 E22 – this is me trying
Rory’s fallout with Lorelai and quitting Yale
They told me all of my cages were mental / So I got wasted like all my potential / And my words shoot to kill when I'm mad / I have a lot of regrets about that / I was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere / Fell behind on my classmates, and I ended up here

And I can go anywhere I want / Anywhere I want, just not home
S6 E5 – thanK you aIMee

And it wasn't a fair fight, or a clean kill / Each time that Aimee stomped across my grave
S6 E6 – Crazier
Rory telling Logan she loves him for the first time (ever!)
You lift my feet off the ground / You spin me around / You make me crazier, crazier / Feels like I'm falling and I / I'm lost in your eyes / You make me crazier, crazier, crazier

S6 E11 – 22
Lorelai and Rory go to Atlantic City to celebrate her birthday
It seems like one of those nights / We ditch the whole scene / And end up dreaming instead of sleeping
S6 E12 – Maroon
This song relates to two Gilmore relationships on the rocks in this episode - Logan doing everything he can to earn Rory back with flowers, gifts, and words; “You were standin' hollow-eyed in the hallway / Carnations you had thought were roses, that's us” and Lorelai learning that Luke kept April from her; “When the silence came, we were shaking blind and hazy / How the hell did we lose sight of us again?”
S6 E13 – The Alchemy
Logan saving the day at the Yale Daily News
Cheers chanted, ‘cause they said / There was no chance, trying to be / The greatest in the league / Where's the trophy? / He just comes running over to me / Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?
S6 E14 – Karma
Paris alienating the entire Daily News staff, getting ousted, and then turning on Rory when she gets the editor position
You're talking shit for the hell of it / Addicted to betrayal, but you're relevant / You're terrified to look down / 'Cause if you dare, you'll see the glare / Of everyone you burned just to get there / It's coming back around
S6 E15 – you're losing me

S6 E16 – Babe
Rory learning that Logan slept with all of Honor’s bridesmaids during their separation
Since you admitted it, I keep picturing / Her lips on your neck, I can't unsee it / I hate that because of you, I can't love you, babe
S6 E17 – Renegade
Lorelai struggling with Luke shutting her out when it comes to April
Is it insensitive for me to say / Get your shit together? / So I can love you / Is it really your anxiety / That stops you from giving me everything? / Or do you just not want to?
S6 E18 – Sweeter Than Fiction
Rory seeing Jess’ success as a writer and telling him how proud she is of what he has achieved
I'll be one of the many saying / Look at you now / I'll be one of the many saying / You made us proud
S6 E19 – Paper Rings
Lane and Zack get married in this episode, and Paper Rings feels like the perfect soundtrack for their friends to lovers story
I like shiny things, but I'd marry you with paper rings / Uh huh, that's right / Darling, you're the one I want and / I hate accidents except when we went from friends to this
S6 E20 – Labyrinth
Rory falling back in love with Logan after she almost lost him to the accident
Oh, I'm falling in love / I thought the plane was going down / How'd you turn it right around?

S7 E2 – Would've, Could've, Should've
Lane’s regret at her life being turned upside down by such an early pregnancy instead of being able to follow her musical dreams
Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first :(
S7 E3 – The Tortured Poets Department
This song is a good metaphor for the words-based connection that Rory develops with Logan to deal with the long-distance; Who else decodes you?
S7 E4 – New Romantics
A fun girl anthem to commemorate Rory meeting Lucy and Olivia in this episode
We are too busy dancing / To get knocked off our feet / Baby, we're the new romantics / The best people in life are free
S7 E5 – The Outside

Oh, a simple complication / Miscommunications lead to fall out / So many things that I wish you knew / So many walls up I can't break through
S7 E12 – exile
Chris finding the character reference for Luke and realizing he was always Lorelai’s second choice
All this time, I never learned to read your mind / I couldn't turn things around / 'Cause you never gave a warning sign (I gave so many signs)
S7 E13 – The Moment I Knew
Christopher ignoring Lorelai’s calls when Richard winds up in the hospital again, while Luke immediately shows up with food and offers to help
You called me later / And said, "I'm sorry, I didn't make it" / And I said, "I'm sorry too" / And that was the moment I knew
S7 E14 – Better Man
Lorelai and Chris ending their marriage; this song is especially relevant to Lorelai’s “You're the man I want to want” line
Sometimes, in the middle of the night, I can feel you again / But I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man / But I know why we had to say goodbye like the back of my hand / But I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man
S7 E15 – Tell Me Why
Emily going from complimenting Lorelai about her independence to being cold and uncaring again in the morning
You could write a book on / How to ruin someone's perfect day
S7 E16 – Robin
An ode to Lane’s unborn sons ❤️
Way to go, tiger / Higher and higher / Wilder and lighter / For you / Long may you roar / At your dinosaurs
S7 E17 – Peter
This song represents Logan's Peter Pan regression in this episode, when Rory fights with him about his immature reaction to his business deal going wrong
I hoped you'd return / With your feet on the ground / Tell me all that you'd learned / 'Cause love's never lost when perspective is earned
S7 E18 – Clean
Lorelai has finally washed her hands of Christopher and is ready to move on, and she and Luke reconnect to talk about where things went wrong
Rain came pouring down / When I was drowning, that's when I could finally breathe / And by morning / Gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean
S7 E19 – I'm Only Me When I'm With You
Luke and Lorelai fight about buying a new Jeep, and it's a welcome return to normalcy for them
Well, you drive me crazy half the time / The other half I'm only trying / To let you know that what I feel is true / And I'm only me when I'm with you
S7 E20 – loml
Lorelai bares her soul for Luke at karaoke, clearly still feeling the loss of him
If you know it in one glimpse, it's legendary / You and I go from one kiss to getting married / Still alive, killing time at the cemetery / Never quite buried / You're the loss of my life
S7 E21 – Champagne Problems
Rory turning down Logan's marriage proposal
Your mom's ring in your pocket / My picture in your wallet / Your heart was glass, I dropped it / Champagne problems
S7 E22 – This Love
Luke and Lorelai finally reuniting after all they've been through; this is the THE Luke & Lorelai song in my book
This love is good / This love is bad / This love is alive back from the dead / These hands had to let it go free / This love came back to me
A Year in the Life
Winter – marjorie
The Gilmores grieving the loss of Richard
And if I didn't know better / I'd think you were listening to me now / If I didn't know better / I'd think you were still around / What died didn't stay dead / What died didn't stay dead / You're alive, you're alive in my head
Spring – Nothing New
Rory floundering, trying to find a career and purpose; this is absolutely the most Rory-coded song of Taylor’s
Lord, what will become of me / Once I've lost my novelty?
And I wake up in the middle of the night / It's like I can feel time moving / How can a person know everythin' at 18 / But nothin' at 22? / And will you still want me / When I'm nothing new?
Summer – illicit affairs
Rory finally breaks things off with Logan after months of cheating
Take the road less traveled by / Tell yourself you can always stop / What started in beautiful rooms / Ends with meetings in parking lots / And that's the thing about illicit affairs / And clandestine meetings and stolen stares / They show their truth one single time / But they lie, and they lie, and they lie / A million little times
Fall –
Sweet Nothing
Luke and Lorelai finally getting married, never happier
You're in the kitchen humming / All that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing
All Too Well
Jess still pining for Rory as one of the last shots of the series
'Cause there we are again on that little town street / You almost ran the red 'cause you were lookin' over at me / Wind in my hair, I was there / I remember it all too well
Thanks for reading if you made it this far!

So I know this has probably been said but in s3 ep18 of Gilmore girls when lorelai pays back her parents and Rory gets upset with her-
What the fuck was Rory thinking?
Of course lorelai was going to pay her parents back, and of course she was going to do it and be happy to have it done, but personally I think the way it was done was respectful, lorelai showed gratitude and honesty and was so clearly thankful to her parents.
It had been well established that lorelai didn’t like leaning on her parents like this, she had never hidden it, it wasn’t like it wasn’t known.
But no.
Rory was completely on her grandparents side. And I understand where her grandparents were coming from, of course Emily would be upset at this because to her it means she will no longer have the semblance of a relationship with her daughter that she had secured through these dinners.
But Rory’s reaction makes no sense to me.
And this was the first time when I was first watching the show that Rory really pissed me off.
Because she’s treating the situation like it was taken lightly, she’s treating it like lorelai only paid Emily and Richard back to get at them.
And she is also being entirely selfish in how she treats her mother, she’s not respecting how hard the situation had been on lorelai.
And I know people tend to see it as lorelai was ungrateful throughout the entire thing but honestly I think the way lorelai acts towards the situation is fair, her childhood was the equivalent of what the beige moms kids lives are looking like (this is mainly hyperbole but to the outside this is how it looks), all personality and originality and color were suppressed in Lorelei’s childhood.
She was stuck in a place where she was discouraged from being herself and was constantly reminded that she was not what her parents wanted, that she could not reach those standards and that cultivated resentment and I think that was fair.
But the way Rory acts, and the way she treats lorelai, it just kind of feels like foreshadowing as to who her character becomes later, and gives insight to the fact that Rory ending up where she was when Logan had to make it clear to her that she was raised adjacent to high class society and that she wasn’t absolved from the things she was bashing in her writing, shouldn’t have been a surprise.
Honestly now watching it back it just makes her more unbearable even earlier than I thought it would.

I've seen a lot of similar takes like that and it's always weird because even if I don't like Rory with Logan, I understand why their relationship was more mature than any of Rory's previous ones. Both of them are young adults by that point, Logan is in fact 25 by then (?), so I get why they had discussions about their relationship and living arrangements in ways that Rory didn't have even with Dean because she had been living in her dorm then. But I don't think that automatically translates to her being ready for an engagement or marriage
exactly! and also, i think the relationship with dean in the start of s5 had a very different dynamic to the one she has with logan in the later seasons. with dean, he moved back into his parents house after the whole divorce from lindsay, and rory was in her dorms and they basically meet once a week for sex. like in the whole life and death brigade episode he leaves a voice message to rory asking if she wants to hook up later, so it really doesn't imply there is something serious going on there (he works at 3 jobs! she's a yale student). in this point in their relationship it just doesn't feel like it's going to last or serious enough. they seems to be friends with benefits even if rory does refers to dean as her boyfriend it's very... immature in a way? they barely go on dates, they "hook up" and basically both of them, in a way, since rory lives in her dorms most of the time - still lives in their parents places.
with logan the situation is very different. by the time rory is living with her grandparents, it is implies logan has his own place, and they were hanging out there and she spends most of her times there. later in season 6 we learn that logan is about to go to london for a year, but we are assuming her graduated from yale off screen, so a 24 years old having his own apartment after graduating from college? yeah, it makes sense. when paris kicks rory's out a bit later in s6, rory moves in with logan, and it's very stable and i think she even lived there for 2 years? or even a year when he was off and on in london in s7? they are having a life there. in a way, besides rory coming back home to stars hollow in s7 to visit lorelai, she fully lives in with logan at this point. not even with paris or at dorms or at home.
now that being said, i agree with you. just because you are sharing a house with someone doesn't automatically translates to her being ready for marriage or being engaged in the long run. she's very young, she's basically 22 years old, and while she does shares an apartment with someone (in that case, her boyfriend for the past 3 and half years), it doesn't mean she is ready to be his wife.
i just can't stand those takes of "rory should've said yes" and "rory is acting on full wifey mood when she's around logan" like i get why their relationship is more matured, it doesn't mean she's ready to take it to the next step of marriage and kids and a house in california with a avocado tree.

What do you think about some people claiming that Logan was actually concerned for Rory when she dropped out of Yale but didn't say anything because he was scared of her getting mad and shutting him out just like she did with Lorelai? And that that's why Jess found the courage to say something, because he wasn't really in her life anymore so he had nothing to lose?
Hi! @love-geeky-fangirl
To be fair he may have been a little bit concerned, but I think Logan himself was used to just blowing off his problems with partying and drinking. For me it doesn't make sense that he didn't push her enough to go back because he was afraid she would cut him off like her mom when after they get into a fight he has no problem not talking to her and hooking up with some girls before deciding to check on his relationship with Rory. Everyone else in her life expressed more concern with her emotional state than he did including her grandparents and Paris along with her mother, Luke and Jess. I won't say he didn't care at all, but he really could have expressed more concern than he did, or try to motivate her, but I think he really didn't know how to handle those kinds of things in a general sense, and also he just didn't know her enough to know how to motivate her. I think L*gan was just used to living passively in his own life and that was just his way with handling things, and he was passive when it came to her problems too. Rory was always the one picking up the pieces for both of them! That relationship was so extremely one sided, and he needed Rory to pick up his pieces, but when she needed him he was just not there for her in those ways. Even in the revival when she was needing some kind of push he STILL doesn't push her in a way that she needs it! It's really just another thing that shows how much he is not good for her imo. Jess really just wants the best for her, whether she is mad at him or not, he's gonna remind her who she is! That's Jess' personality he will let her know when she is in the wrong, or not being herself. That's why it makes me laugh when people like to say "Jess has an idealized version of Rory in his head and puts her on a pedastal." No he actually just gets her, even Amy herself said that's the relationship she setup for Jess and Rory. Honestly I think R*gan stans come up with these kinds of things because they don't want to admit that Logan will never have a draw with Rory in a way that Jess does. L*gans actions really show that he doesn't get her especially not in the way that Jess does, that is why Jess is able to pull her out of her ruts everytime because he sees her for who she is, and knows her. He really just gets HER to look at HERSELF and see is this really what you want. He asks her the question so she can think for herself! Maybe Logan was scared to a degree that Rory would shut him out too, but he had no problem not contacting her after their fight that he made all about him so that sort of debunks that he was just scared she would pull away from him, when he had no problem not speaking to her for weeks and hooking up with other girls. For the most part Logan is just so self centered it's just ugh he is not there for Rory in certain ways that she needs him and I think that really shows. I mean yes he was there for her when Richard was in the hospital, and he had his decent moments, but on an overall scale he just wasn't there for her in the ways she needed him to be when it came to her emotional state because he didn't know how to handle it with her. In the revival there was no reason that he couldn't try to motivate her, or push her in a positive direction, he STILL wasn't there for her in those ways that she needed him too! He's just so not good for her in the long run, and that really shows.

I was doing some idle musing on Rory's boyfriends and Austen heroes, and what I came up with was that Jess is part Mr. Darcy and part Frederick Wentworth, and Logan is part Henry Crawford and part (in his best moments) Henry Tilney. Any thoughts?
I think those are good Austen-to-GG-boyfriend classifications all around!
Jess has quite a few of Darcy's social anxieties in that he doesn't seem to like being around large groups of people at once, prefers to keep to himself, and doesn't talk or open up easily. Both characters also have a propensity for being taciturn and standoffish at times. They can rub some the wrong way as a result. In addition to that, they're introverted intellectual individuals who have embarrassing or disappointing relatives (i.e. Lady Catherine, Liz Danes). Their first "I love you" declarations are on par in Disaster Fireworks, too, don't you think? I mean, Darcy point blank calls Lizzie's entire family an embarrassment who is beneath him in social class AND manners and then still excepts her to accept his hand in marriage, which is so unbelievable it's hysterical, and Jess tells Rory he loves her after pulling a cross-country disappearing act that ended their relationship only to disappear AGAIN immediately after he blurts out the words, not even pausing long enough to blink, or like, to roll down his window so she can shout her reply at him as he drives by on his way out of town. It's next level Don't Do This romantic foolishness on both their parts. They deserve an award or a badge of honor or something to commemorate their mutual totally-bungled-that idiocy. 😄
Like Wentworth, Jess is the "suffer in silence" type. (I'd argue he takes after Luke in that way.) They both venture off on their own paths after they experience heartbreak, finding themselves, making something of their lives. For Wentworth, that means going to sea and amassing a fortune. For Jess, it means writing a novella and later working at Truncheon. And clearly they have the whole pining for the girl they love thing in common. Plus, there's that sense of mutual understanding that ripples through those two dynamics. Something that exudes "I know you better than anyone" energy because words aren't always necessary. They fall short. As Wentworth writes in his infamous letter to Anne at the end of Persuasion: "You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others." Jess and Wentworth are able to notice things about Rory, about Anne, that everyone else overlooks. Or plain don't see. The connection they share never truly dwindles no matter how much time has passed, either. It burns beneath the surface like an ember, waiting, flickering softly in the dust of what once was, of what still could be, perpetually on the cusp of catching flame again.
I'd also make an argument for Jess having some Mr. Knightley in him as well. They're both emotionally repressed as hell, for one. The frustration is rife, I'm telling you! Jess has a hard time expressing, sometimes showing, his feelings for Rory and I've always thought that falls in line with Knightley's "if I loved you less I might be able to talk about it more" vibe. And while Jess doesn't lecture in the same way that Knightley does with Emma, he isn't afraid to ask Rory the hard questions, he doesn't hesitate to deliver the harsh truths she needs to hear. Jess challenges Rory to be better, to be true to herself, in the same way that Knightley does with Emma.
Onto Logan now. I definitely see a lot of Henry Tilney in him and a decent amount of Henry Crawford as well. I've always considered Tilney to be Austen's most charming, sociable, good humored, and extroverted hero, and I think that tracks well with Logan. He's also outgoing, seems to have no trouble making friends, and when he puts his mind to it, will and can charm the pants off of almost anyone he meets. (Gilmore grandparents, especially. But he's no slouch with Luke, Lorelai, or Christopher either, is he?) Tilney and Logan are both bright, witty men with active playful minds. I think those traits act as catnip for Rory and Catherine, it's what attracts them. They like the stimulation. The never-know-what-they're-going-to-do-or-say spontaneity. It's adrenalizing emotionally, intellectually, and sexually. Another similarity between the two men is that they each have fraught relationships with their fathers who have an "image" or "expectations" for their sons to uphold. The fathers view their name, or the social strata where they belong, to be superior to that of other people. Tbh, Mitchum Huntzberger and General Tilney should form their own Cad Dad Club because they're both cads. 😂
Henry Crawford and Logan share a considerable amount in common, too. Wit, attractiveness, and considerable charisma aside, they also both come from wealth. They're privileged, entitled, and have essentially had free reign to indulge their whims and vices throughout their lives without many consequences. I think Crawford's more wanton in his exploits with the opposite sex than Logan, though. The man doesn't just flirt he seduces. And he does so without much remorse. Granted, I know Logan was a bit of a playboy, a casanova, or whatever you want to call him, when he and Rory first started up but he commits to her eventually and loves her. He does his best to make her happy. And he is a present, caring, devoted boyfriend most of the time (the bridesmaid shagfest and jetting off to base jump, cliff dive, I forget the specific thing rn when he's upset, notwithstanding) whereas Crawford's feelings/intentions with Fanny are a little more hazy. It's hard to know whether he was actually in love with her or if it was about the chase, since she wasn't responding to his advances in the the way he'd grown accustomed or had hoped she would. Fanny never trusts Crawford. Rory does love and trust Logan, so there's a marked difference there.
In addition to Tilney and Crawford, I also think it could be said that Logan has some of Mr. Willoughby's good traits. They're both passionate individuals, for one, and aren't afraid to show it. They lay it all out there. Go after things. Live life to the fullest. I admire that in both of them. Fanny and Rory needed a little bit of that in their lives, I think. It pushed them out of their comfort zones. In a good, productive way. That said, the men's zest and spontaneity could teeter into recklessness as well, which is behavior they both exhibited in different ways and at different times.
I'm sure I could come up with more if I thought about it longer but that's all I've got for now.
Anyway, thanks for the ask, sweets! This was fun to muse over! xoxo

Gilmore Girls: Jess Mariano - Type 4w5
Tumblr media
Jess is sarcastic, belligerent and intelligent. In the original series, he had a chip on his shoulder but grew a lot as the series progressed.
At his best, Jess becomes more responsible and gains a better attitude. He becomes a successful author and opens a publishing house. Jess becomes more grounded and practical while still staying true to himself.
At his worst, Jess is snarky and rude. He has an attitude of being ‘too cool’ for Stars Hollow and treats most of the residents as lesser than himself. Jess is lazy and thinks he is above trying, which results in him not graduating high school.
Jess has deep-seated issues of abandonment from his childhood. Fours (like 6s) have strong feelings of abandonment and will often feel like people will reject them because they are defective. Fours often see themselves as outcasts because of this. We see this quite prominently in Jess, who feels like his parents don’t want him and feels like he doesn’t fit in with the people of Stars Hollow. I believe a major reason for Jess’s bad attitude is because he wants to push people away before they can do it to him.
Jess is very creative and unconventional. He is highly intelligent and has a number of eclectic interests. Most prominently Jess is interested in obscure music, books and movies. Jess is able to channel his love of literature and writes a book. He follows his dreams and despite never finishing high school he is able to build a business in publishing.
Jess is deceptively image-focused. I think that Jess has an idea of who he is and wants to project that into the world. He gets irritated when things happen that are outside of the image he has created for himself and when people see that he might not be the cool bad boy he portrays himself to be. For example, Jess desperately doesn’t want to tell Luke he works at Wal-Mart, because it  ruins his street cred. Likewise, he is so reluctant to tell Rory that his black eye was from a swan that he has a massive fight with her.
Tumblr media
Jess strongly values uniqueness and authenticity. I feel that Jess takes a strong stance against Stars Hollow, because he sees the people who live there as ordinary and uninteresting. I think Jess feels as though, nobody there understands him and that the people there aren’t interesting enough to care about. The only person in Stars Hollow who piques Jess’s interest is (of course) Rory.
Jess seems to put Rory up on a pedestal. He feels a deep sense of connection with her and they share an intellectual bond. While Jess and Rory, have very different views as to how life should be approached they actually complement each other really well. Rory is a positive influence on Jess and she is able to help him see that he can do more. Jess admires how Rory uses her intelligence to move forward in life. At times, Jess feels inferior to Rory and this is one of the major precipitating factors in the deterioration of their relationship. While Jess admires Rory’s intelligence and drive, he also resents it. Jess feels as though he is not good enough for Rory and that he will only hold her back. When he meets Rory again and she is floundering he is able to make her see that she is wasting her potential. Even when they haven’t seen each other for so long, there is always a sense of understanding and they always push each other to be better. (#literatiforever)
Jess has a wing 5 as he is more detached and introspective than a wing 3 would be. Furthermore, he is also very withdrawn and is not very ambitious which is more indicative of a 4w5.
Tri-type: 4w5 - 6w5 - 9w8
Some quotes to describe Jess’s traits and motivations:
“It's a crazy world we live in.”
“Think how dull your life would be without me.”
“I don't want to talk to anybody else. I don't like anybody else.”
“I want to be good. Life's just not letting me.”
Jess: “No, no. I mean with you. What's going on with you?” Rory: “What do you mean?” Jess: “You know what I mean. I know you better than anyone. This isn't you.” Rory: “I don't know.” Jess: “What are you doing? Living at your grandparents' place, being in the DAR, no Yale...why did you drop out of Yale?!” Rory: “It's complicated.” Jess: “It's not! It's not complicated.” Rory: “You don't know.” Jess: “This isn't you. This, you going out with this jerk, with the Porsche. We made fun of guys like this.”
Rory: “Why are you only nice to me?” Jess: “Excuse me?” Rory: “An hour ago you were totally screwing with Dean and now you're totally nice to me.” Jess: “You see, it's the screwing with Dean that's an important step to getting here so that I can be nice to you.”
Rory: “Wow a place in Stars Hollows that you actually like!” Jess: “Yeah I have some good memories of this place. See over there, that's where Luke pushed me in!”

Ugh i hate when i see ppl try to take away the weight of jess majorly contributing to rory going back to yale, of course in the end rory decided to go back but it was him who was able to show her that, not anyone else and that means something but r*gan fans like to downplay his role in that decision even tho again asp has directly said they fundamentally understand eachother!!!! Whats not clicking for them?? Its like the obvious intention of the scene flies over their head…
god yep I totally agree. sure, jess doesn’t have sole responsibility — rory does make her own decisions and she was starting to get frustrated with the way her grandparents were treating her — but jess was the one to really and fully open her eyes to what was going on. I think jess antis/r*fans just don’t want to admit that jess has a pull with rory that logan will never have. logan makes rory feel like her ooc behavior is fine. he gives her cover in that sense, like she doesn’t have to try to be the best version of herself (and this is in no way a dig at rory, just the rogan relationship). she doesn’t see the issue with slacking off when she’s with logan because he practically encourages it.
but jess, who has known her for years, who has seen her at her best, comes in and immediately clocks what’s going on. he knows her and while she’s always had a connection to her grandparents’ world, she isn’t meant to belong solely to hartford high society. dropping out of college isn’t her. partying all the time isn’t her. being a member of the D.A.R. and spending all her time planning parties isn’t her. while it may work for others, it doesn’t work for rory gilmore. she was miserable living like that!! she doesn’t want to have maids do everything for her. she doesn’t want to spend all her time drinking and partying as opposed to pursuing her goals and doing the things she loves. jess knows all of this because he knows her. his concern for her when he asks her what’s going on and tells her he knows this isn’t her opens her eyes because he really does know her better than anyone. she trusts him and knows he’s right when he says it. there’s a reason that no one else was able to help her see this. not lorelai, not logan, no one but jess. his antis can try to dismiss this all they want or try to bend it to make it seem bad, but the attempts are kind of pathetic given that asp literally said it was a “natural thing” for jess to pull her out of this

I think the problem with how people see rory and my particulr problem with the fandom, is that they seem to see rory like the adults in her life saw her, especially lorelai. They hold her to the same ideas and standards that lorelai did, thinking rory was 100% perfect in the first seasons and then went off the rails bc of her grandparents or bc she was a spoilt brat (or bc logan which tbh is so stupid, considering i do believe logan was 100% more self aware than rory and in ways way more mature)
This to me makes no sense. Rory was so clearly a girl who looked for comfort in most situations (probably bc of her tumultuous upbringing + her own personality) so being “spoilt” is very very natural. Honestly i watched gg a few years after it came out and i kinda expected that exact arc on season 1. Bc to me it was so obvious!!! But maybe it’s bc i live in a country where psychoanalysis is the biggest thing and i guess that tends to make everyone a bit of a profiler????? Lol.
Idk man, i watched this before i studied psych and i had the same opinion that i do now. And it truly completely surprises me that people say later seasons rory was out of character???? She was very much rory to me - the worst part of her if u will. But also as a person from another country it is a pattern i tend to see on anglo countries when i watch these shows and get into these fandoms, that they kinda tend to always take the narrator/main characters at face value?? Like canon = what main characters say. And for the most part we see it very differently with the people from my country I talked to!! I guess it is also cultural, which makes it so much more interesting to me lol.
Anyways, i do love believe rory is very realistically done, and you can like her without agreeing to every single choice she ever made :))) which is sth this fandom forgets. Also, seriously the worst thing she did was the sleeping with married dead, after that?? Truly nothing particularly terrible for people to demonise her. Being spoiled and rich is not the most damning thing in the world tbh.
Sorry to kinda rant on your askbox lol, but i do get annoyed at people hating rory and repeating the same old things without pouring an ounce of their own critical thoughts.
Much love xxxx
yes to all of this!! I actually saw an interesting post recently about how lorelai being the mother means it's easy to automatically view her as the one with the "right" opinions, especially when it comes to rory, when she's actually just a character whose perspective can be flawed or biased, which fits really well with your point! it's so interesting how your cultural norms shape your viewing of the show too!

Rory’s Impulsiveness
Throughout Gilmore Girls Rory goes through various character changes as she becomes an adult.  Although she’s less demure and more social by the end of the series, many of her main traits remain, including issues with impulsiveness.  Rory struggles with head over heart, overthinking so strongly that she’s afraid to take action, and when impulse takes over it often has lasting effects for her character.
Tumblr media
Rory’s impulsiveness is shown in varying lights across the seasons.  During the first season, a glimpses of Rory’s impulsiveness are shown through her admitting her crush on Dean, secretly seeing him after her birthday party, and later as Rory runs away to Richard and Emily’s house during a fight with Lorelai.  For the most part, Rory’s impulsiveness is restrained until season finales.  At the end of S1 Dean come to Rory’s school and, unable to bear him walking him away, she calls out for him to stay ‘because I love you, you idiot!’
Tumblr media
It’s a moment of impulsiveness which instantly rights the wrongs triggering their breakup - Rory is able to tell Dean she loves him and her heartbreak of the previous episodes ends.  The season is capped with Rory and Lorelai jumping up and down in the town square, dizzy with happiness.  Everything seems simple and certain and safe in Rory’s world.  In S2 things start getting more complicated.  Luke’s nephew, Jess, moves to Stars Hollow, and is instantly drawn to Rory.  In return, Rory begins getting feelings for him too, but staunchly denies them  Her mother, best friend and essentially all of the town write Jess off as a troublemaker and warn Rory away from Jess, reminding her of how good she has it with Dean.  Despite being thrilled at time spent with Jess (such as when he drops off the care package and choosing to spend the bid-a-basket festival with him, impulsively calling him afterwards) Rory pulls away from her crush.  When Jess moves back to New York, after an evening spent distracting each other and driving around after getting icecream, Rory impulsively goes to New York to see him without telling anyone and without any plan.
Tumblr media
It is only when Rory is delayed getting home that she admits the trip to Lorelai but, when her mother suggests she has feelings for Jess, Rory whips into denial.  When Jess sees her at Sookie’s wedding, telling Rory he simply ‘came back’ Rory runs to him and kisses Jess impulsively, letting her heart take over. She breaks away soon after, telling Jess not to say anything, and literally runs away, unable to understand what she did.
Tumblr media
In S3 Rory returns from Washington, having spent the summer away from Stars Hollow.  She is unable to communicate with Jess, afraid of what her impulsiveness meant, and the opening shot depicts her writing a letter she can’t complete. Despite still being attracted to Jess, Rory refuses to act on it, instead making jealous remarks until Dean finally breaks up with her at the dance marathon.  Once together, Rory struggles with new emotions and a sexual tension unexperienced before and, although it isn’t acted on, she tells Jess to ‘keep thinking what you’re thinking’.  Towards the end of the season she and Jess come close to sex at a party but Rory stops the situation, stating it’s the wrong place to be having her first time.  She and Jess fight and Jess, unable to communicate that he’s upset over dropping out of high school and his father being in town, leaves without telling Rory.  Utterly devastated, Rory is unable to voice to anyone how hurt she truly feels and, when Jess comes back into her life she refuses to give him another chance.  Jess now represents to her the dangers of impulse, and, now married, Dean seems stable and safe in comparison.  Unhappy in his marriage Dean secretly starts seeing Rory and, at the end of the fourth season, the two act their feelings.  Impulsively, Rory loses her virginity to Dean, convinced he still loves her and can ease the pain and loneliness she’s felt all year.  Interestingly, it’s the same date as Sookie and Jackson’s wedding, the anniversary of Rory’s impulsive kiss with Jess.  Her moment with him is portrayed in a sweet light; Rory is growing out of her childhood role and relationship towards more adult feelings, but her happiness with Dean is broken away almost instantly with Lorelai.  Rory can’t go back to how things were, Dean is married and she was cheating with him, and it was an impulse she should have resisted.
Tumblr media
In S5 Rory continues to see Dean after he gets divorced, but it’s largely unhappy and shortlived.  Rory, who allowed herself to give into an impulse with Dean, is unwilling to end what they’ve started because to do so would admit it’s a mistake and not really love.  Her head tells her Dean is a safe choice and Rory clings to him, feeling that her passion for Jess was what destroyed it.  Despite this, Rory breaks away from Dean, getting more involved with her life at Yale and discovering the Life and Death Brigade.  Although she doesn’t act on it, like before, Dean breaks up with her in front of a crowd, telling her he doesn’t belong in her wealthy world after Rory is late to meet him at her grandparents’ party.  Logan Huntzberger, who caught Rory’s attention at the start of the season, is there to comfort her and Rory quickly falls for him. At a Life and Death Brigade event Logan tells Rory she’s sheltered and looks like she needs ‘a little adventure’, encouraging her to be more impulsive as a whole.  Holding his hand, Rory jumps from safety into a world which remained elusive until now.
Tumblr media
Strongly attracted to Logan, Rory isn’t put off by him telling her he’s not a ‘commitment guy’ and decides to try being casual with him, and seem less ‘mouse-like’.  At her grandparents’ vow renewal she takes Logan into a side room where the two almost have sex before being walked in on.  Rory attempts being casual with Logan in the weeks that follow, but can’t relax into the role, eventually admitting she’s a ‘girlfriend girl’.  Logan decides to try commitment and for a while things seem steady until, during an internship for Logan’s father, Rory is informed that she isn’t cut out to be a journalist.  Completely crushed, she decides to be reckless in order to forget about it, and encourages Logan to steal a yacht.  The impulse lands Rory in jail and then with community service, and eventually to her dropping out of Yale.  After a long fight with Lorelai and months of living with her grandparents and partying with Logan, Jess surprises Rory with a visit in the sixth season.  In the years since he’s seen her, Jess has written a book, found a place to live and turned his life around.  While still having a sarcastic sense of humour and knowledge that formal education wasn’t the right route for him, Jess has grown out of his adolescent impulsiveness that caused poorer choices when he was younger.  In a sudden reversal, he is the more mature out of the two, and informs Rory that it was a mistake to quit school and they used to make fun of guys like Logan.  Rory’s belief that being with Logan is adventure is challenged, implying that she’s clinging more to a comfort zone than breaking out of it.  After Jess leaves Rory moves in with Lane, goes back to school and makes up with her mother and, despite staying with Logan, something has shifted between them.  Near the end of S6 Rory goes to Philadelphia to see the open house at Truncheon, where Jess works.  As the room empties Jess goes to sit with Rory who excitedly and impulsively talks about all the things she wants to write and create from being there.  As they talk, they get closer, and, without warning, Rory and Jess kiss.
Tumblr media
As with the kiss at Sookie’s wedding, Rory bolts, afraid of what the kiss means.  Desperate telling Jess she loves Logan, she refuses to stay, and he simply replies it is what it is, you me.  Upon Rory’s return, Logan gets in an accident and any chance of Rory rethinking her relationship are essentially voided.  In the seventh season, Rory works towards finding a life after college but, when Logan proposes, she turns him down, deciding it would be an adventure too far and chooses to seek one alone.  Years later in AYITL Rory and Logan have reunited, after the death of Richard, and are having the kind of casual relationship they attempted in S5.  Rory claims to be happy with the arrangement but is upset if Logan cancels on her, feeling used.  Impulsively, she sleeps with a stranger during a trip to New York and the night is a catalyst for Rory to admit to all the uncertainty she’s experiencing, and is left feeling unresolved.  In Summer, whilst living at home and working for the local newspaper, Jess surprises her again.  After confessing how unhappy she is, and no longer feeling like herself, Jess encourages her to write a book.  A leap into a new project gives Rory new focus, and she starts feeling less aimless.  After deciding to end her arrangement with Logan, Rory goes on one final adventure with him and his friends.  She impulsively sleeps with Logan but, after he wakes, tells him they have to move on. The kind of shortlived, impulsive adventures they’re having have to come to an end. Turning down his offer of a house to write her book in, Rory goes home, no longer needing him to ‘rescue’ her.  When Jess visits again Rory impulsively leaps into his arms, thrilled to tell him how she’s already written. Shortly after this, Rory discovers she’s pregnant, presumably by Logan, and have to figure out the next step her impulse has brought her.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, Rory’s impulsiveness through the series is shown in different lights, taking her of the safe path she prefers.  At first glance it would seem that her impulse for Jess is riskier, destroying her simple relationship with Dean, yet Jess’s influence largely leads Rory to grow and find a better version of herself.  It was with Logan, and surprisingly Dean, where Rory’s impulses tend towards a more destructive streak.  As whole, romantically and otherwise, Rory’s impulsive side is quietly present, consistently turning her world around.
I would like to thank @natsugia for her thoughts on this which helped form this analysis!

fayesgifs said: Lorelai’s reaction was definitely far from good but I think it was also because her /own/ dreams were kind of at stake with Rory possibly quitting Yale (that she not-so-subtly placed upon Rory from a younger age). This isn’t to say that everything hangs in the balance re: Rory graduating from college, but Lorelai was way too used to having a somewhat obedient dutiful daughter that the minute Rory started failing, Lorelai thought she had to ‘play the mom card’ or w/e in order to get Rory to do what she wants her to do. All this isn’t to say that Lorelai is a malicious mother; she loves Rory and she wants what’s best for her, but too often her own personal wants clash with what Rory /actually/ want, and Lorelai obviously isn’t equipped with handling that well. It’s also why her thinking she’s a bad mom is a pretty poignant scene, because she’s realized that her way of approach wasn’t good at all, and you also mentioning how Rory moving in with her grandparents is something that Lorelai kind of ‘feared’ from the beginning, which is Rory “choosing” them over her when in reality that wasn’t the case at all.
It’s always funny seeing r*gans’ arguments about Rory being a ‘spoilt brat who fits in well with the rich society’ being the beginning of season 6 when it’s just SO obvious that Rory’s not doing any of these things (hosting parties and being a member of the DAR) because she’s found new love in them? she’s doing it to keep busy and to not think about her lack of general direction in life now. It’s why her seeing Mitchum at that event is important because it highlight how hurt and insecure she still is over what he said, and it’s even more obvious with how Richard responds once he finds out what Mitchum says, and even reacts with a frustrated “she’s running around planning tea parties like she’s the Mad Hatter” when it comes to Rory and her current preoccupation. Another argument that I feel like I should bring up is that the counter-argument for Jess’s “I know you better than anyone” is always “but what about Lorelai??” Here’s the thing, Lorelai most CERTAINLY know many more things about Rory than Jess does, but Lorelai also has a pretty skewed perception of her daughter because of her own approach to motherhood. The way she often misuses the ‘mommy card’ is kind of proof for this, in that even when she’s ‘accepting’ of Rory possibly wanting something else, she still makes an argument out of it while not really seeing that Rory is very deeply influenced by her opinion. It’s why once Rory puts her own foot down, Lorelai is unable to handle the situation well at all, and lets her own grievances with her parents get in the way of her relationship with Rory. Jess on the other hand, while only knowing Rory a smaller amount of time, has also seen her emotionally cheat on her boyfriend to a certain degree, kiss him while dating Dean, and randomly come to New York to see him. He also knew these things before Lorelai did, and didn’t take to telling Rory what she ‘should’ do in order to be a good daughter or girlfriend. Lorelai might TRY to accept some of Rory’s decisions when they clash with her own, but she still doesn’t show a lot of support towards Rory when she makes them, and just gives her radio silence when Rory decides to not come back to Yale. So Jess’s line might not be literally true, but it does make sense to a certain extent, because he knows her various flaws and quirks and the way Rory even acted towards Emily in the episode (with evasiveness and frustration, a result of other episodes’ worth of material) is further proof that she isn’t meant to live like this.
That’s a great point! It was as much Lorelai’s dream as it was Rory’s, similar to all of the plans they (particularly Lorelai) had for Rory’s 21st birthday. This fic has been a really interesting read for me in terms of exploring what Lorelai looks like as a mother when she can’t be the best friend to her child. The very premise of the show is contingent upon the significance of Rory and Lorelai’s relationship, so it pretty well goes without saying that Lorelai knows Rory but she doesn’t know how to react when their wants clash, like you say. Lorelai is strong-willed and can be real petty/stubborn – she herself even says, “As long as everything is exactly the way I want it, I’m totally flexible.” and as the series progresses, Rory keeps more things to herself because she knows how her mother will react. The ‘bad mother’ scene is very poignant! Lorelai takes a very hands-off approach after the plan with her parents falls through, telling herself that Rory needs to figure this out on her own.
That’s such an amusing argument to me?? Rory comes across as very fish out of water, especially in the beginning of season 6; she cleans dishes and bonds with one of the maids + the general weirdness she feels over having maids. And then there is her oblivious reaction to the whole Birkin bag gift, saying it can fit her computer cords lol. Whenever Rory is alone in a scene she seems so... lifeless and lost? That moment where she’s watching tv in the mostly empty pool house comes to mind.
Yes!! Like I said, obviously Lorelai knows Rory extremely well but her character flaws means that understanding has its limits in that Rory feels she has these expected roles to fulfill, not wanting to disappoint her mother for reasons we’ve both already mentioned. In moments like the whole car scene in 2x19, there’s an openness and sense of vulnerability in Rory that we don’t get to see often. There’s something to be said about how Rory doesn’t need to be ‘on’ with Jess because he doesn’t place these expectations on her, and this makes it so Jess does get to know significant parts of Rory – certainly enough to recognise when something isn’t right and she needs a push. Rory surrounds herself in season 6 with people who resign themselves to believing she is fine, or have this non-confrontational, unwavering belief that Rory will figure things out all on her own because she’s so smart. I definitely agree that the line doesn’t need to be taken so literally but that it’s still worth analysing as it raises some interesting points for discussion! He’s not completely off-base when he says it.

RORY EOIN LARKIN If they had to listen to only one musical artist forever, who would they choose? He would probably choose The Clash– he loves rock music in general, especially punk, and The Clash was his favorite band growing up, so he’d be fine listening to them for the rest of his life. How would someone realize they were irritated or impatient? Rory is a pretty nice person, easygoing and laid back, not overly friendly but generally patient with people and willing to talk to anyone who talks to him first. It takes a lot to get him irritated enough to actually show it. But if he does get to that point, his answers start getting shorter and more to the point, he sort of closes himself off and becomes less willing to engage, and he will excuse himself as quickly as possible to get himself out of the situation. Do they follow the news or avoid it? He doesn’t follow the news too much, but doesn’t avoid it either. If he hears that there is something important or major going on, he’ll look it up and read all about it. But he doesn’t check the news every morning or watch the news when he gets home unless there’s some story he’s following. If they could relive one day of their life without changing anything that happened, which day would they choose? He would probably choose any of the dates/nights out he had with Simon, honestly. Being with Simon was the happiest he’s ever been in his life, and if he could revisit any of those memories one more time, he would be a happy man. Write about the consequences of keeping quiet when they should have spoken up. Rory’s biggest regret in life is that he never told Simon he loved him. He constantly wonders how things would have turned out if he would have been more honest and not such a coward. Although part of him is certain it wouldn’t have changed anything, that there’s no way they could have made things work long distance, he can’t help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, they could have made it. Maybe they would be together now if Rory had gotten up the courage to admit his feelings. Do they have a story about a friend who broke their trust? Write about how it made them feel when it happened and how they feel (not think) about it today. When he was a teenager and just beginning to come to terms with his sexuality, he came out to a friend he trusted and asked them to keep it a secret. They did not keep it a secret, and by the next day, it seemed like the entire school knew. Rory was extremely upset, but never confronted his supposed “friend” about it– he simply cut all ties with said friend and never spoke to them again, even when they tried to apologize. They see their Ex making out with one of their friends. What do they do? I guess it depends on which ex. When it comes to most of his exes, he wouldn’t really care– he might be a bit jealous, because that’s only natural, but he wouldn’t be angry. But if it was an ex he had actually been in love with– such as Simon, or Cyril (his longest relationship to date– they were nearly in a common law marriage), he would be very unhappy about it. He wouldn’t confront them, but he would probably avoid said friend and also whichever ex it was. Are they most likely to fight with their fists or their tongue? He’d be more likely to fight verbally than physically. That being said, if someone really crosses the line with him, he’s not afraid to throw a few punches. Were their grandparents alive when they were born? Describe their relationship with their parents. His grandparents on his mother’s side were alive, and his grandfather on his father’s side was alive. His mother didn’t have a great relationship with her parents– they were super Catholic and overbearing, and were very upset with her for getting pregnant out of wedlock and refusing to marry the father right away (they did eventually get married when Rory was about five years old). Their relationship was always strained after that, and she never let them into Rory’s life because she didn’t want them to try and poison him with their religious bullshit. Rory’s father had a much better relationship with his parents, and after his mother passed away, his father came and lived with them. When Rory was born, he helped out a lot with taking care of Rory and taking care of things around the house. Rory was very close with him and was devastated when he passed away shortly after Rory turned sixteen. If their ex suddenly kissed them right now, what would they do? If it was Cyril that kissed him, Rory would pull away and reject his advances. There were too many issues in their relationship, too many fights and hurtful words exchanged, for Rory to ever want anything to do with him again. But if it was Simon, let’s be real here, Rory would kiss him back without hesitation. Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring? He loves the snow, so winter is probably his favorite. He loves the way it looks, he loves the cold weather, he loves being inside with a steaming hot cup of tea with a blanket wrapped around him while he watches the snow fall– he just loves winter. He could never live someplace where it doesn’t snow. What does their morning routine look like? He rolls out of bed around 6:45 in the morning, throws his clothes on, pours himself a thermos of plain black coffee, and then he’s off to work. If he’s left himself enough time, he’ll stop at a cafe near his work and grab a bagel or a breakfast sandwich to wolf down before he actually clocks in for the day. On his days off, he likes to sleep in as long as he can (which is normally until about 10am), then he gets up and makes himself some tea, then sits and plays either piano or guitar for a couple of hours before going out to run whatever errands he needs to do that day. What’s something they quit, that they now regret giving up on? Music. He used to be in a band, and although he knew they wouldn’t ever be famous, he really enjoyed playing music and playing small venues. His dream was always to have his own music label someday, but of course that never really panned out for him. He sometimes wonders what his life would be like if he had actually pursued his dream instead of giving up, but that line of thinking is too depressing and he never dwells on it for long. How well would they handle a long-distance relationship? Rory would find long distance incredibly difficult. Not because he would be tempted to cheat or to leave his partner, but because he would constantly be worried that his partner would forget about him. He’d be really paranoid and stressed out the entire time because he’d constantly be expecting to be broken up with. How did they do in school? What is/was their favorite subject? Rory always loved his art and music classes the most, and he did pretty well in his literature classes as well. He wasn’t amazing in math or science, but he always at least passed his classes. He was never a straight A student, but he studied hard and was decent in school. Would they prefer a neat or a more comfortable home? Describe the room they’re sitting in now. He much prefers a comfortable home. He’s not a slob by any means, but he’s also not a neat freak and likes his place looking cozy and lived-in. A little clutter doesn’t bother him. He spends a lot of his time at home in his living room, which has blackout curtains on the windows (he opens them on days when he’s actually home, but leaves them closed otherwise), a comfortable couch he’s had for nearly fifteen years, a small glass coffee table, and a reclining armchair. The floor is hardwood, and he’s laid a slightly beat-up area rug out in the middle of the room. There’s a small bookshelf with a combination of books and DVDs on it (Rory switched over to reading e-books some time ago since it’s more convenient), and a decently large TV mounted on the wall. There’s some clutter here and there, and it’s not spotless, but overall it’s clean and a very comfortable, inviting space. How do they react to stressful situations? Defensively? Aggressively? Evasively? For the most part, Rory handles stress pretty well, at least outwardly. He knows how to put on a good front and act like nothing really bothers him, even when it does. He’s also not really the type to ask anyone for help when he needs it, so he’s overburdened a lot of the time. His stress tends to manifest mostly as physical symptoms– soreness in his shoulders and his back, headaches, fatigue. Who was the first person to break their heart? I mean. He kind of broke his own heart, honestly. He knew that Simon didn’t want them to break up, he knew that Simon wanted to try long distance, but he just couldn’t see it working out for them. Rory was the one that ended the relationship between them, and it was his first real heartbreak. Do they like or dislike their job? He doesn’t hate his job, but he doesn’t really like it either. It’s just something he does in order to pay the bills, but working in a foundry was never his dream. He doesn’t get any kind of mental fulfillment from it. But he likes a lot of the people he works with, and although he’s often tired and sore at the end of the day, he does find the hard work to be satisfying in a way. Although he’s been working at the foundry for many years, he knows he’s only got a couple of years left before the job becomes too much for him– he’s already very worn down in a physical sense, and he knows if he tries to keep working this job for the rest of his life, he’s just going to end up destroying his body. He plans on trying to find a new job within the next couple of years, but he has no idea what sort of job he wants. Do they prefer routine or spontaneity? As much of a homebody as Rory is these days, he really does appreciate spontaneity. Anytime he’s invited out for a drink with the boys at the last minute, he is bound to say yes. Or if a friend calls him up on a weekend and invites him to a party, a concert, etc, Rory is almost always up for it. He always likes a bit of excitement to break up his routine.

Lorelai & Her Parents
At 16 Lorelai was rebellious against anything her parents did or said & she’s the same way even in Year in the Life where she’s in her late 40’s. She has zero open communication with her mom...still.
She never listens to her parents, avoids their calls, tries to get her daughter to be the go between on several occasions.
Lorelai whines, bitches & moans about her parents being the root of all evil. The way she talks we would expect them to be Joseph Stalin (a comparison she made herself in that magazine interview about the Inn).
However, we never see or hear anything that bad about her parents. Nothing unforgivable. They’re just normal loving parents who have strong opinions & are sometimes pushy.
Tumblr media
Lorelai gave birth to Rory when she was 16. No parent would be thrilled at the idea their child just made their lives considerably more challenging for themselves. Parents generally want their kids to have better lives than they had.
In flashbacks we see Richard & Emily being good parents. Posh & proper they took parent in lots of events & rituals Lorelai didn’t like. Such as sitting for a portrait & wearing fancy dresses etc
Lorelai’s seen joking with Christopher & in good spirits. She’s not traumatized or being abused in any way.
We never see them being cruel, angry, or abusive to her. They definitely wanted her to follow suit. To do what they say...to listen...and to learn from them.
Lorelai rejected all of that. She’s not good at any of those things.
However they still seemed like good parents. Great even.
When they realize Lorelai’s pregnant they are shocked & disappointed. Immediately they jump into protective mode. Richard suggests helping Chris join the family & the kids could get married... his attempt to salvage her reputation. He knows how cruel people can be especially from the upper class elites whom of which can be petty.
Both Richard & Emily want to fix the mistake so they jump in. Christopher even said he wanted to marry Lorelai & he seemed excited about having the baby. Lorelai just looked annoyed at all of it.
We also see that she pushes them away again & again.
When she goes to the hospital alone they rush to be by her side. And she still acts annoyed. They wanted to help someone they love & she was annoyed!
In the flashbacks we see that Lorelai & baby Rory were living with Richard & Emily for at least a few weeks. Her parents seemed to be okay with the living situation.
A nice house, no rent, all expenses paid, and they mentioned a nanny...to which Lorelai felt she had to escape. What??
Seriously, she wanted zero help from everyone & anyone. That’s not just being independent that’s being blinded by pride.
And after her parents did everything for her, Lorelai runs away with baby Rory.
That’s completely selfish. I could imagine how painful that would be for her parents.
To make matters worse, it’s said several times in the early part of the series that Emily never got to see how Lorelai raised Rory...and that they barely ever got see or talk to Rory when she was little.
Tumblr media
In fact, the first interaction we see of Rory & her grandparents it’s like Rory doesn’t know them. It’s like they’re being introduced to each other.
So...basically Lorelai didn’t try to have her parents involved in Rory’s life. She didn’t encourage a relationship with them - that is so incredibly spiteful & selfish.
When Emily finally meets the owner of the Independence Inn we see that she was upset about all that missing time. She didn’t have pictures of Lorelai or Rory during that time. It’s so...sad.
Season one has Rory getting into Chilton & it’s an excuse for her parents to get involved in their lives. They see it as an opportunity to get to know Rory. They pay for Chilton in exchange for Friday night dinners.
Tumblr media
Even though they made a deal & Lorelai gave her word to have weekly dinners with her parents she still tries throughout the series to get out of them. It’s so rude & she’s so ungrateful.
Lorelai always whines about the dinners. But they were good! They get nice food, sit in comfort & have good company. She often looks like she’s having fun but later complains about them. There were only a handful of bad dinners in the series with her parents.
So why did she always complain about them?
Because she’s ungrateful for everything her parents did for her.
Tumblr media
Good things Richard & Emily did for Lorelai:
* They raised her in a loving, stable home
* She had a good education
* They taught her good morals
* She was always fed & taken care of
* They tried to help when she was pregnant & provided support once the baby was born
* In season 1, Lorelai hurts her back & Emily takes care of her
* They paid for Chilton & Yale
* Their only request (or as Lorelai called it they ‘demanded’) to spend time with their daughter & grand daughter in exchange for the schools’ tuition.
* Despite not being invited by their daughter (because Lorelai assumes they wouldn’t want to go), both Richard & Emily attend Lorelai’s college graduation as the proudest parents in the world.
* They bought Rory an over the top high school graduation gift- a car- to which Lorelai barely thanked them.
* Richard taught Rory to golf & showed her around the country club.
* Richard was a mentor for a school project of Rory’s
* Emily encouraged Rory several times to make friends with her classmates
* Emily encouraged school involvement to help make those friends & for college. She stated something along the lines that it would help for everything.
* They remain friendly with Christopher (Rory’s father) even though he’s rarely around & they don’t like the fact he & Lorelai never got married. They know it’s important to be civil as he’s Rory’s father & they hope eventually the situation would improve.
* Emily is super nice to Jess upon their first meeting even though she thinks Rory is too good for him. She kept her opinion to herself, except when she had a private conversation with Lorelai.
* Emily helps Rory navigate parties & the DAR, making sure her grand daughter would be prepared for life of the upper society instead of leaving her to flounder.
* Emily prints out a list of tips for ways in which Rory can avoid getting stabbed in prison (during her community service)
* Richard defends Rory’s honour when he realizes Mitchum Huntzberger had upset her.
* Likewise Emily gives a great verbal thrashing to Shira Huntzberger in response to the woman having humiliated Rory
* Even when he’s not speaking with Lorelai, Richard helps take care of the insurance at the Dragonfly Inn.
* There were lots of warm family exchanges between them & Rory. Some warm exchanges between them & Lorelai too.
* When Rory ran to her grandparents, breaking down & basically begged them for help, they gave it to her. They took care of her.
* When Rory got arrested they never gave her a hard time or judged. They tried to help.
* They were still open to Logan being in Rory’s life even though his parents treated her poorly.
Not so good moments of theirs:
* Richard breaks business ties with Digger, going behind his back & working for his father
* Richard manipulates the situation so that while visiting Yale Rory has a meeting with the dean
* Emily throws the Yale (boys) party to try to get Rory to meet someone new as she’s too good for Dean (it worked, because she was too good for him)
* When they feared for Rory’s ‘virtue’. Old fashioned, yes. They felt her being a virgin until marriage was the way to go so they set up an awkward dinner with a pastor to talk sense into her. Good intentions but it was none of their business.
People have a lot of opinions about who was responsible for the rift between Lorelai & her parents.
What I think is this:
When Lorelai ran away with baby Rory, it was her fault. She took off, pushed them away & refused help.
Being rich & powerful, they could have won custody. All they had to do was get a private investigator to take pictures of the shed Lorelai & Rory were living in. Prove that Lorelai (who refused help from anyone) left Rory alone while she cleaned rooms at the Independence Inn.
It would be easy for them.
However, they didn’t do that. They actually gave Lorelai space & took what scraps of contact she was willing to give.
During the series (even with nothing triggering it) Lorelai pushes her parents away, bad mouths them, constantly hides big life events from them (her college graduation, not one but TWO engagements! , etc)...and she humiliated Emily by giving that mean interview about her when she should have talked about the Dragonfly Inn.
However, when Richard betrayed Digger, that caused tension. When he forced Rory to talk to the Yale Dean, it caused a rift. Not approving of Luke caused tension but they still supported Lorelai even though they didn’t like him.
Supporting Rory’s decision to drop out of school was huge. They supported her, thinking it was the right thing. Then Richard laid it out for Lorelai (because Rory was too chicken shit to stand up for her mom more than once a year 🤷‍♀️) .
It was what Rory wanted but Lorelai felt it was all her parents’ fault, which wasn’t true.
Emily even tried to encourage Rory to talk to Lorelai a few times. Finally getting through to her with the invitations to her birthday party.
And Lorelai showed up to the party & acted like she wanted to kill them. Emily asked how Luke was & Lorelai jumped down her throat...and of course that was when we realized that again Lorelai didn’t tell her parents she was going to marry Luke.
Another knife wound.
Emily & Richard are critical but they also learn & evolve. They both are pragmatic so while Emily was underhanded in inviting Christopher to the vow renewal, I get it. Emily wanted to see if she can piece the family back together - choosing one of the few times where she’s getting along with Lorelai. She probably thought that if he saw Lorelai at a wedding he’d want to marry her & vice versa. Kill two birds with one stone.
Yes it was shitty because Lorelai was with Luke; however, if that had been a healthy relationship (there were lots of issues) it wouldn’t have imploded the way it did. Later when the two have a healthier relationship both Richard & Emily are more accepting of Luke.
Even during Emily’s emotional breakdown where she wanted to buy that plane she suggested that Lorelai & Luke can use it - showing at that point she’d accepted the relationship.
So who was to blame for the rift?
Both...but mostly Lorelai.
Tumblr media
While I can understand the argument that she had been raised in a way she didn’t like, you can’t place blame on that.
Lorelai felt suffocated at 16 but she didn’t just need space, she wanted to cruelly ditch her parents.
You definitely can’t blame her parents for the way she acted towards them at 30-something. Because adults are responsible for themselves. You have issues with someone? Talk! Communicate! Even if that involves arguing.
Suck it up, address the issues then figure out how to fix it.
I feel like Emily & Richard did this a lot. They struggled sometimes but eventually they worked things out. But Lorelai kept pushing them away & shut them out of her life.
Even in Year in the Life. She still resented her father so much that she couldn’t remember a single good memory about him at the funeral. Then she acted angry at Emily when she was upset. Emily had every right to be.
They go to therapy because after all these years they can’t talk to each other. Still. Well, we know Emily is very vocal so who could be to blame? Perhaps the fact Lorelai was keeping her therapy from Luke was a bit telling.
In any case, whomever you blame for the problems, I think we all can agree it would have been nice if the show had more flashbacks so we can see why Lorelai resented and (at times) hated her parents.
Nothing I saw in the series was enough to be that angry with them & to run away or barely see them in 16 years. Were they stifling? Yes. Controlling? A little bit but parents often are. Annoying? Yes.
Abusive, cruel, mean, neglectful? No, no, no, and no.
In my family, we talk & occasionally yell. We don’t have to like what each other is doing but hey that’s family. But we do try to talk. Sometimes things come up that annoys us but we deal with it.
Lorelai’s family wasn’t perfect. That’s fine, but why wouldn’t she want to see them? Why would she take a situation about her neurotic mother & think it was funny to tell perfect strangers & to compare herself to a murdering dictator?
You have to be pretty heartless to do that...even if Lorelai didn’t realize it would be in print. I don’t care how annoyed I get I would NEVER talk about my parents like that.
So, why does Lorelai? What happened to her that she thinks this is okay? What (if any) shady things did her parents do to deserve something like that?
I wish the show could have shown us because the absence of information just feels like Lorelai is cruel & vindictive
Tumblr media
I personally think Lorelai just never grew up. She acts immature even in later seasons so I believe she has the same mentality as she did when she was 16. She assumes several times the worst about her parents when the were just being straight forward or asking simple questions.
Like, for example, Rory’s invitation to her birthday party. Lorelai assumes it was a manipulation by Emily but her daughter was just reaching out to her. Instead of checking to see if she was actually welcome she - like a child - ignores it & would rather miss Rory’s birthday then deal with 2 minutes of awkwardness on the phone to get clarification. She just assumes there is no possible way she’d ever be wrong. Keep in mind at this point Lorelai is supposed to be around 38.
She’s not a child, she’s not naive nor stupid. She’s merely self involved. She thinks how she thinks, never bends, & can’t possibly comprehend the fact that her parents genuinely love her & try any means in which they can see her & their grand daughter.
In later seasons we can see how heartbroken her parents were still about missing out on Lorelai’s life. Emily starts making suggestions about adding onto the Dragonfly Inn, by having a spa attached. Lorelai brushes it off like it was nothing but Emily was reaching out to her because she was worried she wouldn’t want to do Friday night dinners again.
Tumblr media
And we see in season 7, when the girls attend Mia’s wedding that Emily was still upset by the separation all those years ago. She’s civil while trying to hide her pain. Lorelai was completely oblivious to how upset Emily was. Rory points that out & eventually Lorelai actually understands.
Some people aren’t fans of season 7 but I loved that episode because it showed Emily’s vulnerability & pain and we actually got to see some growth between Lorelai & Emily!
Year in the Life completely shit all over that of course.
The series finale was alright regarding how Lorelai is with her parents. They were in a good place & she reassured her mom that Friday night dinners would continue. Meaning, she would still be in their lives.
I had no complaints about that. Though I still wish we saw more about their past.
What I had hoped to see in Year in the Life was a solid relationship with Lorelai & Emily. After all those years, why wouldn’t they have progressed?
We saw hints that when Lorelai would take her head out of her butt, she actually enjoys time with her parents. Such as having fun with Emily at that fashion show.
And a lot of people get annoyed at their family as teenagers but once they’re grown up & moved out, they have a good relationship with them.
Tumblr media
I wanted, in the Year in the Life, for Emily & Lorelai to still have their banter but be friendly. Meeting up to shop occasionally & such. But instead they’re still in a bad place? After ten years...really?
Seeing that was exhausting. Even as a 40-something woman Lorelai acted like a spoiled brat. Like a teenager, and her mom then treated her like one. It was stupid & disappointing.

Note
As much as I dislike infidelity, it wasn't really a shock that Rory ended up with Logan in a cheating situation. She fell for the book reader in Jess but was never happy, she always wanted Dean through her relationship with Jess. And when she found out Dean was getting married, she wasn't really angry because she thought he was too young, I think it was because she didn't want him to be with anyone else.
The only reason they didn't work out in the affair is because he didn't fit into the upper class world she was always going to want. She always liked the adventure of the bohemian lifestyle (living in the potting shed, bad boy Jess) but when it came down to it, she loved the world her mum ran from. The acadamia life, being a trust fund kid. She tried to deny it, but it came out in so many ways.
i think rory, while dating dean, found in jess the novelty and intrigue of a new person, the excitement of many possibilities, and yes, also the uncertainty that comes with it (especially with somebody like jess). dean was a very nice first love interest but also, the show introduced jess as this quite opposite personality to his and like-- jess loved books while dean whined because rory put his extra curricular before a movie date. I think the show did dean very dirty when they shifted this thoughtful, book loving, sweet guy into the controlling, insecure one of later. the difference between earlier-dean and later-dean is pretty blatant and I believe it was also purposely made to push rory towards jess and make us dislike dean, too.
the rory/dean endless debacle is honestly upsetting to me because: a. cheating and b. rory was simply momentarily lost and confused, insecure of her choices and she threw herself at the first available glimpse of stability (aka dean which was anything but stability and like-- we so didn't need them to try and revise their teenage years relationship) while she should have focused on herself, worked towards her goals, figured out what she needed and what she wanted. and dean treated poor lindsey so forking awfully. like, seriously, i am so pissed at him for that.
and yes, i agree with your last point. rory grows up in a certain way and environment and you'd expect her to reject that kind of lifestyle -like lorelai did. but, also, rory didn't grow up with them. she has the chance to experience both worlds without having to necessarily pick. she does very much benefit from her grandparents' status and wealth (which, i mean, I certainly don't judge their paying for education and such) and enjoys it. I don't think she would have taken a break from yale if she didn't have her grandparents' shoulders to fall on and more, well, 'trust funds kids' friends around to support her choices.
anyways, i'm not sure everything I've written makes complete sense but I'm quite sleepy so--

The Dormant Beast - Jongho (4)
Tumblr media
Read Part 3 HERE
Part: 4 of ?
Idol: Jongho of ATEEZ
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Friends to Lovers
Word Count: 4,028 (I was on a ROLL, baby)
Warnings: Slight prejudice and bullying (non-racial and it’s not body shame either), swearing and shit, Mild name-calling,  MC is a Black Female
A/N: I use certain names in this fic that are meant to be similar to real people. It’s just to add to the whole “post-human race.” For example, if this story takes place AFTER the human race expired, it wouldn’t make sense that someone like Lizzo to exist, right? Also, I wanted to change it up bc it’s fun lol. Anyways, Enjoy!
Jongho stood outside the restaurant, annoyed and tapping his foot rapidly against the pavement.
“Crescent would never be this late.” He huffed, glancing at his watch. How did he wind up in a date with Desire? Glad you asked.
The afternoon of Crescent’s attack on Rory, Jongho walked up to his locker to put his books away for the day. The minute he opened it, a letter slipped out. Opening it, he smiled, noticing Crescent’s loopy handwriting.
Can’t walk home together today.  Decided to skip town for a while. Please, don’t look for me. Don’t stop by the house either. I asked my parents to keep my whereabouts a secret. I’m sorry, Jongie. It’ll only be a few days max. I just need to clear my head on things. Shit’s getting too crazy. I won’t be alone, Clips is coming with.
P.S. à You should go on the date with Desire. It’ll do you some good to be around someone that isn’t me. Plus, I need something funny to look forward to when I get back.
Love,
Crescent
Jongho’s smile dropped, furrowing his eyebrows. What did she mean don’t look for her? Where was she going? Why couldn’t he come?
Against her wishes, Jongho sped to her house. The door swung open before he even got a chance to knock.
“Crescent owes me five bucks.” Lunar said, stepping out onto the porch. “She had faith that you wouldn’t come looking for her at least until tomorrow. I knew better.” He sat on the porch swing.
“Of course I’d come. She’s my-”
“Your best friend, which is code for the love of your life?” Lunar glanced up, amused by Jongho’s frozen expression. “I was your age once too, you know.” He said, patting the porch swing.
“I met Solar in high school. A little late compared to you and Crescent, but that didn’t make the feelings any less real.” He said as Jongho sat down. “And when you look at Crescent, you know what I see? I see the same way I looked at Solar all those years ago. That look of longing, wanting what you couldn’t have.”
“What was wrong that you couldn’t be with Mrs. Moon?”
“…She was already married.”
“What? But you said you were in high school?”
Lunar shrugged. “It was a different time back then. When it came to marriage, it was aura over age. This guy with a super-strong aura, an elephant or something, came to her house one day. Asked for her hand in marriage, he had seen her walking to and from school and wanted her for his wife.”
“And her parents just accepted some random guy who had seen her on the street leaving a high school?” Jongho asked incredulously.
“Yes, but please remember it was a different time. Beliefs were different, and because of it, people got away with a lot of things. Of course, he had to prove he was the aura he said he was, as well as proof he could care for her and other things.”
Jongho nodded. “So, if she was married, how did you end up together?”
Lunar smiled. “We started as friends. We didn’t realize when it became more. One minute it was innocent study dates, and the next we were sneaking around behind the bookcases. Word got out that I was getting too close for comfort, and her husband wasn’t pleased. He challenged me to battle, confident that a hyena had no chance against an elephant. Well, he was right. I was beaten to a pulp. He told Solar to follow him; they were going home.”
“And then?” Jongho asked, fully engrossed in the story.
“She told him no. She didn’t want to go with him. He said she had to; those were the rules, after all. She asked him what would be the point if everyone knew she wasn’t happy. She was clearly not in love with him. She stated that he should fight for someone that cared about him. Which is what I had done. So, though it took some time, they divorced and parted ways. Divorces weren’t as accepted back then, so her family shunned her, closing her out. Embarrassed that she would divorce an elephant for a measly hyena. My parents received backlash for the whole situation as well, so they wanted nothing to do with me. We did odd jobs on the weekends, sometimes living out of motels to make ends meet. To the outside world, it seemed we had nothing. But to us, we had everything. We had each other. We graduated high school, moved here to Strongville. We had a small wedding, only inviting what few friends we had. We got steady jobs, putting ourselves through college. Months after graduation, we had Eclipse. Then came Crescent. The whole point of telling you this, Choi, is that when you want something, no matter how unattainable it may seem, you’ve gotta try. There will be obstacles. There might be consequences. Even times when it seems like you’ll never come out on top. But love will always prevail.”
Jongho sat in silence, absorbing the information. “So, that’s why Crescent never mentions her grandparents. But, Lunar, Mrs. Moon and you were on the same page back then. What do I do if Crescent and I don’t see eye to eye? I’ve tried expressing my feelings before, and she shuts me down before I even get a word out. She’s always giving me excuses for why I can’t like her, whether it’s my parents, or her aura, or the stupid hierarchy. What if she doesn’t like me back?”
Lunar chuckled. “Trust me. You don’t have to worry about that.” He said, remembering the constant teasing from Eclipse. “Crescent’s her father’s daughter. Stubborn and stuck in her ways and opinions. But if anyone can get through to her, it’s you. Don’t give up on her just yet.”
Jongho shook his head. “I wouldn’t give up on her for the world.”
“I knew you’d say that.” Lunar smiled. “So, get outta here. She’ll be okay. She has two auras, and that’s two more than she’s had all her life. Let her sort things out. She’ll be back. She can’t go too long without ‘Jongie’.” He said, repeating the nickname in a mocking tone.
“Oh, and Jongho,” Lunar called out before heading inside.
“Yeah?” Jongho responded from the walkway.
“Have fun on your date.” Lunar winked, closing the door swiftly.
Just when Jongho registered what Lunar had said, his phone rang. The contact was listed as “Don’t Answer.”
“Hello?”
“Jongho! Honey, is everything alright? I got a frantic call from Crescent. She didn’t say much but told me to call you. Did you have to talk to me?”
Jongho sighed. Of course Crescent would call Desire, knowing he wouldn’t do it himself.
“Yeah, actually. Are you doing anything Friday?”
-
-
-
Now here he was, dressed uncomfortably in a dress shirt and pants with his ash-colored hair gelled back, standing outside a restaurant where the prices were bigger than the portions, waiting for Desire, who was 20 minutes late.
Just when Jongho had lost all hope, Rory’s Lamborghini Veneno pull up to the curb. Desire’s Giuseppe heels clicked onto the pavement, her emerald green dress contrasting with her fire-red hair. Her smile didn’t match up with Jongho’s grimace.
“Have fun, you two!” Rory called out, raising his eyebrows in amusement at Jongho’s expression before speeding down the avenue.
“I told you to be here at 4:30 because the reservation was for 6:00. It’s 6:45.” He deadpanned.
“I’m so sorry, sweetie! I was going to make it on time, I swear but, then I couldn’t decide between the red clutch or the black clutch. The red goes with my hair, but the black goes with my shoes. So, I brought both!” She said. She squeezed Jongho’s hand when he didn’t react. “C’mon, I’m here now! Let’s go in.”
They entered and were immediately recognized and seated despite the reservation having passed. The waiter sped to their table.
“Good evening, may I start you both off with some drinks?” He asked, flipping open his notepad. “Our special of the night is the Moet & Chandon Nectar Rose, which has been chilled on ice.”
“Ooou, that sounds good, let’s have that!” Desire said, opening the food menu.
The waiter nodded, turning to Jongho. “And for you, sir? The same?”
Jongho gave the man a baffled look. “You realize we’re like 16, right?”
“Oh, Jongho honey, age restrictions don’t apply to us! We’re the future Duke and Duchess!” Desire laughed, shaking her head. “If it’s your first time drinking, I’d suggest not ordering tequila. I made that mistake last year and between you and me, I can’t remember much about that night.” She shrugged.
“So, just because we’re a little stronger than others, rules and law don’t apply to us? Then what’s the point?” Jongho sighed. “Sprite, please.”
“Are you sure, Sir? If not the Moet, we have other options that might better satisfy your palette. A Chateau, perhaps? Maybe even our prized possession, the Dom Perignon? I can guarantee our batch is the most aged, dating back to human times.” The waiter pressed, surprised at the fact that Jongho wasn’t jumping at the opportunity to drink the way Desire was.
Jongho gave him a tight smile. “Sprite.”
“Very well, then. I’ll be back with your drinks and will take your course orders when I return.”
“I can give you some of my glass to try if you’d like? That way you don’t have to order something you’re not sure you’ll like?” Desire offered.
“No thanks, I’ll wait till 21 like everyone else.” Jongho said, opening the menu. “What are you having?”
“A garden salad.”
Jongho looked up at her. “Is that it?”
“Oh, you’re right. It’s my cheat day. I’ll order some shrimp on the side.”
“Cheat day? You work out?”
“Oh no, I’m on a diet because I bought this dress and they didn’t have it in my size so I’m gonna lose weight to wear it.”
Jongho furrowed his eyebrows. “Aren’t you already pretty slim? How much smaller can the dress be? Why couldn’t you just get the dress in your size from the portal?”
“Ugh, no! Only lower auras use the portal. High auras like us should use storefronts. Plus, I’m a 4 and the dress is a 2, so it should fit pretty soon.”
In midst of the technological advances that caused auras to become a thing, the internet evolved into the Portal. The Portal allowed for a more intimate internet experience. For instance, one who may be shopping for clothes or shoes could choose to have their order shipped to their home or a storefront like in human times, or they could choose the Portal, which opens up a large egress on location. This allowed the person to then reach in and grab their item from inside the threshold. It was popular amongst the lower auras who were intimidated from the possibility of running into higher auras and to avoid higher auras from snatching things right out of their carts, which was a common occurrence. Being friends with Crescent, Jongho knew the ins and outs of the Portal and even frequented it himself.
“There’s nothing wrong with the Portal. You can shop right from home, in your pajamas or the middle of the street and get your things right then and there.”
“Exactly, but higher auras are to be seen. Not hidden away at home.” Desire said, as the waiter came back.
“Still better than starving yourself into oblivion,” Jongho said, shrugging. “Are we ready to order?” he asked her.
“Yes! I’ll have a garden salad, hold the dressing, croutons and cheese. And an order of steamed shrimp, hold the cocktail sauce.”
The waiter nodded, turning to Jongho.
“I’ll have the top sirloin steak with roasted potatoes.”
“Will that be medium-rare?” The waiter asked, writing everything down.
“Uh no, well done, please.”
Desire scrunched up her face. “Well done? You’re killing the animal all over again, Jongho.”
“Well…it’s gonna be on my plate so, I hope it’s dead.”
“Where’s the flavor in that, Jongho?”
“The seasoning? Anyways, sirloin, well done, end of discussion. We were already late so I’m pretty hungry. Can we move this along?”
“Yes, right away, sir! Your orders will be expedited.” The waiter said, rushing off to the kitchen.
“Did you learn to eat well-done steak with Crescent? Even your parents don’t eat it like that.” Desire asked.
“How’s that store you opened last year doing, Desire? Is it seeing profit?”
“You’re changing the subject. You don’t wanna talk about her?”
“I finally took you out on a date, which is what you’ve wanted me to do for the past three years, so I’m confused as to why you would,” Jongho said, twirling his salad fork coolly. “So, about that store…”
Desire sighed, sitting up in her seat. “It’s going well, a lot of sales in-store and online, we received a purchase from Teyoncé. You know, the singer with the eagle aura?”
Jongho nodded, impressed. “I’m sure you’ll have members of the Teapot flooding in from all over to buy your products now. They idolize her so much, they follow every trend she portrays.”
“I’m excited. If we continue selling at this rate, we can open up another storefront.”
“Do you offer Portal?” Jongho asked as their food was placed in front of them. He thanked the waiter, cutting into his steak.
“Why would I do that?” Desire asked, annoyed that they were once again discussing Portal.
“Well, you’re targeting the Teapot. You know how many fans Teyoncé has? She comes from a long line of performers, starting from her great-great-great-grandmother. She has fans everywhere, from Strongville to Freehold to Cherrynight Valley. Surely, you can’t expect everyone to come to one store in the middle of Strongville?”
“Anybody who’s somebody will make it. Those who can’t will miss out.” Desire said.
“And the one missing out on money will be you. Exclusivity is for companies with seniority, like the brand on your feet. People are gonna see what it takes to even buy from your store and give up when you can easily offer Portal and have your brand all over the world. Or is Portal beneath you?”
“I just don’t think someone of my caliber should have to settle or beg for sales by lowering my standards.” She retaliated.
“What if Crescent was a fan? She can’t just walk into your store, especially with the way you’ve treated her and her reputation amongst your friends, also your fault by the way. Someone like her would need Portal. Imagine what would happen if word were to get out that you don’t even accommodate for people right here in your town? That’s the thing, though. When you become an entrepreneur, you have to be money hungry. Imagine all the sales you could be making this very minute if you activated Portal.”
The conversation died down, the pair eating in silence. Jongho set his utensils down, finishing his plate rather quickly. He sighed. He’d definitely need to stop at Patty Queen on his way home. The portion was nowhere near enough; he would need at least a burger to be full.
“What do you see in her?” Desire asked suddenly.
“Huh?” Jongho asked. He had heard her but wanted to buy himself some time before having to answer.
“Do you know how much I’ve done to catch your attention? I wear the best outfits, watch my figure, always have my hair done. I’ve wanted to dye my hair so many times, you know why I never did? When we were younger, and I was getting picked on for how bright red my hair is, you defended me. Told me that it suited me, and that I didn’t have to change it. So now, even when I want to change it, I don’t. Because you liked it the way it is.”
“That’s the problem, Desire. You’re always doing things to impress me. Impress others. Haven’t you ever thought I’d like you much more if you were just yourself? That’s what I like about Crescent, to answer your question. Someone living without an aura for that long, especially being scrutinized by the likes of you, would’ve broken down at some point. Not Crescent. She stood her ground, even when she knew you could crush her. She’s seen as weird for liking things like true crime and poetry, but that doesn’t stop her from watching documentaries or geeking over underground poets. She’s unapologetically herself, always. Doesn’t mean she’s perfect, but she’s real.”
Desire laughed humorlessly. “She’s got you wrapped around her little finger. Pathetic.”
“Now I’m pathetic?”
“YES. You’re pathetic! You could have this entire town eating out of the palm of your hand. You could be getting bottle service, Ferragamo shoes, thousand-dollar threads, the best of the best! But you walk around in Converse and Levi’s just like that inferiority! You’re sitting here drinking a Sprite when you were offered Dom Perignon. You’re eating burnt meat and running the school passively when you can easily be treated like a King with me by your side. But instead, you treat everyone kindly like they were your equal.  All because of that chick. What’s she got that I don’t? It’s certainly not money or strength. I’m tired of being overlooked by her. I’m so sick of it. Grow up, Jongho.”
Jongho stared her in the eye, silent at first. Then, what started as a chuckle turned into a full-on cackle.
“What’s so funny?” Desire asked.
“You know, it’s so fitting that you’re a wolf aura.  I don’t think I’ve ever met a bigger bitch.” He said, taking out $200 from his wallet and throwing it onto the table. “Tell the waiter he can keep the change. I’ll see my pathetic ass out.” He said, getting up.
“Oh, before I go.” He turned back around. “I already wasn’t interested in you romantically, but after today, you can forget about this whole Duke and Duchess narrative. I wouldn’t marry you even if there was a gun to my head. And all that whining you just did? The one that has growing up to do is you.” He said, walking out of the restaurant to his car.
“Crescent, Crescent, Crescent.” He sighed, unlocking his car door. “You owe me big time.”

Meanwhile, Crescent panted, leaning against a tree. She’d been training with Eclipse all day long, same as she’d been doing since Wednesday.
“Come on, Crescent. Again.” Eclipse said, sweat dripping down her neck and into her sports bra.
“I told you, Clips. I can’t activate the tiger aura on command.”
“And I told you, AGAIN. In order to activate your aura, you must become one with the animal. You have to feel it. You can’t just clap or jump and become a tiger or a seal. It has to stimulate your senses.”
Crescent sighed, momentarily regretting bringing Eclipse along. The older girl had done nothing but boss her around day in and day out, attempting to train the younger girl aurally.
Crescent closed her eyes, envisioning a seal in the middle of the ocean. She felt a rush of warmth against the frigid breeze.
Lunar and Solar owned a log cabin on the outskirts of town, at the beginning of the woods. It was far away enough that Jongho couldn’t sniff them out, but close enough to rush back home in case of an emergency.
Crescent opened her eyes, the usual dark brown replaced by a dark abyss, similar to that of a seal.
“Good,” Eclipse said. “Now, the tiger.”
Crescent took a deep breath, envisioning a tiger in a vast grassland. But, just like all the times before, the tiger was laying down in the grass, fast asleep. Nothing Crescent did woke it up.
She shouted in frustration. She envisioned it perfectly. What was she doing wrong?
“Okay, let’s take a break. Maybe it’s having an off day. Could it be the climate?” Eclipse asked, taking a seat next to Crescent. “But, tigers and cheetahs are kind of similar, and I can activate my aura out here just fine. But it’s okay. We’ll figure it out. Together.” Eclipse pulled Crescent in for a hug.
Just then, Eclipse’s phone rang. Crescent rolled her eyes. Her phone had been going off nearly every hour since they had reached the cabin.
“Can you stop answering your booty calls? Just for ONE night?” Crescent sighed.
Eclipse smirked. “Why? Am I making you miss Jongho? Maybe he can come over after that date you forced him to go on. I heard from Rory he took her out after all. Still don’t know why you made him take another girl out.” She said, typing something into her phone.
Crescent huffed, looking away at the mention of Jongho. The truth is, she wanted to be sure Desire didn’t stand a chance. She felt that Jongho never gave much thought to the idea of him and Desire because Crescent was always around. So, she decided that isolating herself and putting them both in a situation without her would be the only way to know for sure where Jongho stood. It was a weird, convoluted plan, but Crescent wanted to be positive her feelings wouldn’t be met with heartbreak. If she returned and they were together and in love, she’d keep her feelings to herself and move on. If not, she’d confess once and for all.
“Okay…don't be mad.” Eclipse said, pulling Crescent out of her thoughts.
“No. You’re NOT leaving me here alone again tonight.” Crescent glared at her sister.
“It won’t be the whole night! Jared is a jackrabbit aura, I’ll be back in like an hour tops! And that’s if I stroll!”
“Eclipse, gross! And still, no!” Ever since Eclipse turned 18, Crescent was plagued with hearing about her sexual endeavors with nearly half the graduating class. And, being the blunt person she was, Eclipse held nothing back. There are people Crescent couldn’t even look in the eye anymore after hearing her sister’s stories.
There was an awkward silence between the two, until Crescent saw the amber glint in Eclipse’s eyes.
“Eclipse, I swear to everything I love-”
Crescent couldn’t even finish her sentence before a gust of wind ran through Crescent’s curly, auburn locks.
“ECLIPSE!” Crescent shouted, smacking her hand against the bench in frustration.
And that’s when she felt it. The tiger suddenly jumped up in her envisioning, running rampant. Crescent took off too, her eyes turning a bright amber. But something was different this time. A cheetah appeared next to the tiger. The two cats ran in unison, their astral projections blooming from Crescent’s chest like sun rays. She had the speed she needed to reach Eclipse, and that she did.
Once she was close enough, she pounced at the older girl, the strength of her tiger aura allowing her to overpower the cheetah aura of her sister.
“Why. Do. You. Keep. Leaving.” Crescent gritted through her teeth.
“Crescent. Your aura activated!” Eclipse exclaimed, completely disregarding her sister’s death mission. “But, how did you catch up to me? Tigers are fast but no way are they fast enough to reach cheetahs.”
Crescent sighed, falling back onto the dirt. “Because I’m using both.”
“Woah, wait, what?” Eclipse asked, puzzled.
“The tiger is awake, and the cheetah is right next to it. They ran together, and that’s how I was able to catch you.” Crescent said, describing the envisioning.
“Crescent, did you just hear yourself? Not only do you have THREE auras, TWO of them work TOGETHER. I’ve heard of multiple aura holders, but never have I ever seen anything like what you just did. Double aura? Dual aura?” Eclipse shook her head. Her phone rang again. She fished it out of her pocket, silencing it.
“So, if not even you know what’s going on with me, what happens next?”
“That’s the scariest part, Cres. For the first time in my life, I don’t know what to tell you.”
Stephie here! Don’t wanna make this longer than it already is, but just checking in. Jongho finally told Desire off, is anyone relieved? Anyways, please look forward to the next chapter. Happy Reading!
