AxZ Week Day 5: Poetry
@senshixshitennouweeks
In Silver Millennium, Serenity hands her a slip of parchment, claiming she found it tucked into the hollow of a tree where she had met with her beloved Endymion (she suspects that she was simply playing matchmaker).
The words compare her to a pool of water on a hot day, keeping refreshing, serene, and reflective in pleasing rhyme and meter.
Though it’s short, it’s words stir something in the princess of Mercury and she wishes to know who made such lovely phrases on the tiny blue planet that Serenity is so fond of.
Soon, Serenity brings her more messages that flatter her about her mind and her ambitions, mentioning her beauty to punctuate the writer’s fascination with her.
She never finds out who it is, though. The Silver Millennium falls soon after.

He’s in the library, looking for inspiration for a new energy gathering scheme for their great ruler. His last plan had backfired spectacularly (Video rental stores were not an antiquated idea; it was novel and retro!) and he was going to find something full proof. Beryl was getting impatient.
He pulled a book from the shelf and opened it. A piece of loose-leaf paper, folded into eighths fell from between.
Curious, he picked it up and unfolded it.
I wish to share my words, read the lines of text, to let others know my dreams.
The words stir something in Zoisite and, against his better judgement, pulls out a pen and scrawls a reply, trying to match the number of syllables and give it some kind of rhyme scheme.
Your words have found me now, and filled my heart to the seams.
It’s a simple poem, nothing he’d want to show anyone, but at least he got it out of his system. Putting the paper in between the pages of the book, Zoisite puts the book back and heads for the music section. He’d always been interested in that, so maybe something would inspire him.
Just as he turned the corner, a girl with short dark hair and blue eyes turned the corner and took the book he had just replaced.

The two of them stand awkwardly a week after their second (really third) meeting. They could sit down in one of Crown Arcade’s many booths, especially since it was a slow day, but that would mean sitting across from one another or, God forbid, beside one another.
She’s still not sure trusting him is a logical decision.
He’s still not sure if she even wants to talk to him.
The tension is thick and cloying, a sensation like wearing an old frayed sweater by a campfire.
“So… um… you like to read?”
It’s a dumb question. Between the three books she’s carrying and the reading glasses in her pocket, anyone could see that.
“Yes,” she answers simply. There’s no malice in her voice, but no feeling either. It’s a simple fact.
He retreats to his room when he returns home, trying to write his heart out on a yellow legal pad and trying to take his mind off how Mizuno could even tolerate him ever again.
It’s all chicken scratch though. Even simple fluff poems about flowers being pretty seem to be hard for him to write.
A call from his prince draws him out of his stupor and into battle against a leftover creature.
It’s a bulky, bulbous monster called a Daimon that was apparently made by science.
“Are we winning?” Nephrite calls after his sneak attack completely fails.
“Do you want the truth or one of those little white lies to make you feel better?”
Jadeite’s frustration is understandable, if the improvised bandage on his leg is anything to go on. Mars’s fire seems to have no effect on the creature, Tuxedo Kamen and Sailor Moon are pinned by the Daimon’s onslaught with Nephrite and the other senshi are still trying to make their way across town.
“Mercury Aqua Rhapsody!”
Glittering streams of water streak at the creature, enveloping it in ice and suddenly, Zoisite’s mind fills with descriptions for the attack and for the trickling otherworldly harp strings that accompany it.
Even when Sailor Moon purifies the creature in a dazzling display, Zoisite’s attention is still on the Senshi of Water.
The muse has struck him hard and maybe he can work up the nerve to thank her.
Tumblr media
She recognizes his words when he submits to her, on a sheet of green paper, a poem about Hermes.
He recognizes her’s when he sees her handwriting in her little blue notebook.
Soon, little notes are passed between them. Verses plucked out of the ether to make little compliments.
Soon, they’re talking at length of wordsmiths and writers; who they like, who has the best descriptions, which would fit with music, which writer sounds like they would have voted for Shinzo Abe. Soon, it grows more intimate. Love poems, shared between the two of them, games that become heated the more passionate the poetry.
And the two of them begin to wonder when their games will be played to a work of their own composition.

I've found that I like AmiZoi a lot more when Zoisite is a woman (tentative thanks, DiC dub).

2, 4, and 5 for the writer asks!
2. what's a fic that took you to an emotional/dark/hard place?
Invisible Wounds - Sailor Moon - AmiZoi
So... I self inserted myself into this fic as Zoisite's mother. Not because I feel any super connection to Zoisite, but because I figured that was a really really easy way to make her feel real as an original character with just a line or two of dialogue here or there. She's a minor character. Like super minor. But since she's me, I gave Zoi's little brother the same disorder as my son (when I could have picked ANTYHING else). And like, it's a life limiting condition and for plot reasons I needed his little brother to die. (Do you see where I'm going with this??) So I did a ton of research specifically into how my son's disorder will eventually kill him. And then I wrote the fucking scene. Let's just say I cried doing the research, I cried writing the scene, and every now and again I go back and read it and cry all over again. Like WHY would I do this to myself? (I think it's because I needed to know, and doing it for a fic meant I could pretend there was a layer of psychological defense, which there absolutely wasn't).
The ironic thing is the research that killed me for this piece is for an unposted chapter near the end of the story. And it's getting increasingly difficult for me to work on this story because it is a medical drama centered around an epidemic that I started writing in 2016 before pandemics were a part of my daily life. And it's not that writing about an epidemic is hard/dark, so much as it feels like work, instead of an escape. So I'm not sure anyone is even going to get to read the scene! (But I got a comment on this story a few weeks back and I reread a lot of the upcoming bits, and it's sooooo good. It's a story that deserves to be told... too bad I don't currently have those mental emotional spoons).
4. what fic of your own do you read for comfort?
Best Friends and Boyfriends - Miraculous Ladybug - Adrino
This is the most self indulgent fic I have ever written in my life, and when I'm low and just want to smile and laugh, this is the fic I go to most often. I lvoe the relationship, its development, the conflict, the make up from their fight, and the reveal! And it is the perfect length to get some development, and still be read in about an hour.
And honestly, I can reread almost any of my fics. I will often pick the one that I haven't read in the longest amount of time (also depends on what I'm in the mood for), and then sit back and kinda just be amazed that I wrote the thing? It's crazy. But I love that I have my own little library that is kinda tailored just to me!
5. what fic of your own won't you read?
I don't know that I have a fic I won't read. (See above), but the one that comes closest?
Anything to Protect You - Sailor Moon - Usamamo Fake Dating
Now, I'm actually insanely proud of this fic, and to this day think it's one of the better things I've written. It's got one of the best kisses I've ever written, some positively adorable dates, one of the best battles I've ever written, and a really satisfying reveal moment!!
So why don't I like to read it? Because I hated writing it!! It was a gift for an exchange and so it had to be finished. And it was tailored to my giftee so perfectly and I was excited about THAT, but it was late and ended up taking up a good six months. Actually, one of the things I LOVE about this fic is that it really taught me that I could 1) be disciplined and finish the things I wanted to finish whatever my brain had to say about it (ha!), and 2) could write a really good story even when I myself wasn't invested.
I do occasionally reread it and am floored by some of the moments in it, but it also brings up all the feelings/memories of obligation and forcing myself to work on it when my heart wanted to work on other things. So I think I resent it sometimes that OTHER things didn't get finished instead (like Invisible Wounds!!). But on the other hand, I'm really really glad it exists as well. And clearly this one is going to be read by way more people than my rarepair content ever will. Feelings are complicated.
Thank you @karkalicious769 for the ask!
Send me some Deep fic writer Asks!

40 Days of Sailor Moon
Day 16: Your favorite S/S pairing and why
AmiZoi is the main one I have put my thoughts into, and it also contains both my favorite hero and my favorite villain. I find it interesting to explore their possible dynamics in both shipping and non-shipping contexts, which I think is my favorite thing about them, that regardless of whether they are romantically attracted or not, their dynamic remains consistently interesting to me. And a lot of this is that there seem to be a lot of ways to explore what they can be to each other, what they connect to, and what they bring out in each other.
In La Reconquista, for example, we see Zoisite toning down his initial, theatrically romantic presentation in order to go for a less overtly shippy angle. There have been several analytical posts I’ve seen on a few iterations, which characterize Zoisite as someone who desperately wants to prove he’s not just a pretty face who just parrots what other people say, while Ami is sometimes characterized as someone who would like to be more than “just” the brain, but doesn’t view herself as having any other strengths. There’s a scene in the musical where they play shiritori, and almost all of her words are connected to her scientific and mathematical interests, while he stumbles over finding seemingly simple words and phrases. Yet they’re both shown laughing and joking about it. He never makes any kind of comment about her being really nerdy or like a total weirdo or whatever to keep spewing all these phrases out, and she doesn’t make him feel stupid when he slips up. A little later, they’re also shown helping each other recover their memories, if I understand the subtitles correctly.
Over various continuities, they’ve also shared interests in music, computers, and potentially in games. They both seem to enjoy a bit of competition as well (see Classic and the manga for Ami, and NogiMyu for Zoi). And I think shared interests could be a potential bonding point for them, whether as friends, friendly rivals, or a potential couple.
But I think the other thing, at least more recently, is that in some ways they remind me of a toned down version of Tsukimi and Kuranosuke from Princess Jellyfish. From my perspective, Tsukimi and Kura are another pair that works beautifully whether they’re shipped romantically or remain friends. Kura, like Zoisite, is dramatic and enthusiastic. Everything is a big deal for them, and while they may not immediately read as nerd-types, they do appear to have their interests which they seem to know an awful lot about. (Kura is a total fashion nerd, but early on, doesn’t understand a lot about clothing construction.) But then Tsukimi, like Ami, will tend to wall herself off and become fearful in situations that confuse her, defaulting to familiar patterns and interests either to calm down or to figure out how she should react. But again, get either of them started on stuff they are passionate about, and suddenly you’ve activated what  the Princess Jellyfish manga calls “Awakened Mode.” They can be that in a romantic context, but the context does not need to be romantic. So I think to a certain degree, Tsukimi and Kuranosuke’s friendship played a pretty big role in how I look at Ami and Zoisite, which is the main reason I have this paragraph here.
Finally, there’s that, in order for the pairing to work at all, it more or less needs to be a slowburn. Ami can’t go that fast without panicking or side-stepping to be more of a rivalry, and there are at least a few versions of Zoisite that I cant see it being advisable for him to go zooming full throttle into a relationship either, particularly if he’s not able to get out of “prove I’m not just a stupid pretty face and can actually be useful” mode before then. Which means there would ideally be a decent period of time where they’re either friends or trying to figure out what they want to be. The “figuring out what we want to be” part is often my favorite in terms of exploring romantic relationships between characters. Write it in a satisfying manner, and their story would feel just as complete regardless of whether they end up together as a couple or choose to remain friends.

As one of the High Prince’s four kings, Mercury knew that Zoisite was royalty in his own right. He hailed from the northern tribes, a scattered people only loosely ruled by the High King. Unlike what went on between the Southern Empire and the Golden Family, the families of north held a most strained partnership; an alliance only solidified by the death of the former High King and the servitude agreed upon by a chief’s only children. Mercury understood naught of why such warlike people would be allowed such freedom. Zoisite himself had a look to him- beautiful as only a warrior could be, as only the angels in proto-lunar hymns could invoke; but his eyes held a rage, a lust for battle and danger that just being the Prince’s guard would never give him.
Even now, watching him in the early northern dawn, she wondered just what it would take to make the young chieftain crack. Certainly the whispered insults hadn’t done so. Being called the High King’s dog behind his back only served to annoy him at best. Such was an observation she’d made during one of her visits to collect her Princess.
She would cloak herself so as to avoid detection.
He would escort her to the Prince’s private gardens.
They would come along a passing knight or maid.
He would immediately start fuming to himself
And as much as he’d like to tell her that it didn’t bother him, as much as he made it seem that he was above it all, she saw right through every lie he spoke. The hand clutching his mighty spear would clench oh so minutely that only someone standing as close as she would even notice at all.
But he was the North’s symbol of diplomacy. Any and all of his actions were closely monitored, bar those related to the High Prince.
So here she sat, silently observing what he called a prayer to his Gods. Gods different from her Queen and Princess, different from the Golden Kingdom, Gods possibly as old as the Silver Millenium itself. A preposterous notion, she’d told him once. Terra was only a fledgling planet compared to the eons-old Alliance surrounding it. He’d grown angry at her then; was it the moon’s policy to be so condescending towards those it claimed to watch over?
Mercury bit her lip bitterly. Such a crude terran.

AxZ Week Day 2: Sink or Swim
@senshixshitennouweeks
“I can’t do this.”
Zee’s sister, Rose, frowned at him from her place on the sofa where she was sketching Chinese Dragon designs.
“Not this again,” she said, putting aside her sketchbook.
“I’m serious this time,” Zee continued, pulling at his tie, “this was a mistake.”
“Asking the girl you revere on a date is a mistake?”
Zee frowned.
“You don’t know Mizuno. She’s… brilliant, forthright, and just the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life…”
“I get it. You wrote a piano piece about her. Remember?”
Zee rolled his eyes.
“Well, maybe when you find your reincarnated lover, you’ll realize how daunting this is.”
“Look, Zygmunt,” she said, using the name he preferred to forget he owned, “you’ve known this girl for how long?”
“Counting the brainwashed years?”
“My point is…”
She never got to her point due to the knock on the door.
“Crap! That’s her!”
“Good luck on your date, brother dearest!” Rose said, pushing him towards the door.
Zee cursed under his breath at his sister before opening the door and feeling his breath catch in his throat.
There she stood, in a sleeveless cardigan with a high necked blouse. She wore it well, like she did every understated outfit she wore. But the thing that drew Zee's eye the most was her expression.
The tell tale traces of nerves in that darling little smile she wore and in the way she clutched a booklet in front of her.
She was nervous too.
"Hi," she said simply.
She had no reason to be nervous. Feeling more relaxed than he had in the past half hour, Zee closed the door behind him and smiled at her.
"Hi," he returned.
Ami held up the book in her possession. Pop art musical notes danced across the cover in different hues.
"I thought we might go to that musical festival downtown today," she said.
Zee reached out and took the program from her.
"With you, that sounds divine," he said. Pink dusted her cheeks, but the smile she gave him could stop the world from spinning.
He proffered her the crook of his arm and gingerly, Ami took it.
If Zee had to pick if this date was sink or swim, he'd say right now it was firmly in the "swim" category.

This fanfic is why I haven’t been on tumblr and why I haven’t been getting much sleeping done recently. It is a lovely Sailor Moon AU that is well worth the read if you want to read a good Ami x Zoi fanfic. Here is the summary:
Some people spend their lives believing they were destined for something special. To a handful of girls, it wasn't a childhood fantasy. It was something real and frightening. For one in particular, destiny was a death sentence.[AU] AmiZoi
Also, it does a different twist on people thinking someone else was the moon princess.

Too Many WIPs
@mikauzoran tagged me to the List all the Titles of your WIPs Challenge!
And while I’ve been ignoring a lot of Tumblr games lately, apparently I’m absolutely weak for getting the chance to talk about my projects. And since, most of these haven’t seen the light of day... I was really excited!
Published WIPs: Craving for Chocolate Milkshakes (Sailor Moon) - A romantic comedy. Usamamo mind reading trope. It’s ONE chapter away from completion, and that one chapter is 80% there, and just refuses to be fleshed out. But seriously, WHY IS THIS ONE NOT ALREADY DONE?! Restorative Justice - (Miraculous Ladybug) - A Chloé redemption story where she decides to heal the rifts between Ladybug and Chat Noir that have been caused by them not knowing each other’s identities. Pulls heavily from my experience as a teacher trained in restorative justice practices. This story is surprisingly easy to work on at the moment. It’s the only one that cooperates with me! It’s currently got a five chapter outline. Chapter three is mostly done. Just needs to be fleshed out so it’s more than talking heads in a white room. (Dialogue always comes easily to me. The rest of it is hard!) Coming of Age (Sailor Moon) - Loosely based on the Black Moon arc. Neo Queen Serenity has been mortally wounded, and can only be healed by the silver crystal. But no one is old enough to use it! So in a desperate move Chibiusa is sent back in time to be raised by her parents. Not that she knows that they’re her parents. This one hasn’t been updated in a year. I blame fic exchanges (that are all completed now!). But I’m really excited about this next chapter. Like stoked! Invisible Wounds (Sailor Moon) - An AmiZoi medical/senshi drama. Pulls really closely from my personal life as a parent. I also haven’t published an update for this one in like a year. But the next chapter is really close! (I keep saying that! Is it true?)
UnPublished WIPs: Aftermath (Miraculous Ladybug) - Multi chapter dealing with the Aftermath of a Hawkmoth unveiling and defeat. Pre-reveal. Lots of mental health stuff. A story about healing. Chapter one is close. I’m surprised it’s not out yet. Celebrity Status (Miraculous Ladybug) - A multi chapter Ladrien story. Ladybug goes to Adrien for advice about dealing with being famous. They understand one another’s struggles more than they did before. And end up super close! First chapter is close-ish. It’s got like a ten chapter outline. I was originally trying to post it this past June for Ladrien June, but got distracted by other projects and haven’t gone back to it yet. Maybe I’ll shoot to get it out next June. Yin and Yang (Miraculous Ladybug) - I haven’t done all the ridiculous tropes yet. Here I’m playing with a body swap of Adrien and Marinette. It has a similar feel and tone as Chocolate Milkshakes. I’m really having too much fun with it. No where close to seeing the light of day.   Matchmaker (Sailor Moon) - When the future utopia is destroyed, Pluto manages to protect Chibiusa from the timeline changes and sends her back in time to fix whatever prevented her parents from meeting and getting together. It’s much harder than the girl anticipates. Mostly exists as two initial opening scenes and then just snippets of Chibiusa getting frustrated with her parents who won’t stop being mean to each other.  Motherhood part 4 & 5 (Do those even count as titles? They’ll have titles eventually!). These are Sailor Moon Reveals (sort’ve!) In part 4, Usagi realizes her mother knows and has known for awhile. They get to talk. In part five, Kenji figures it out and has a fight with Ikuko because she kept it from him. I have these outlined blow by blow but haven’t gotten them to fall into place yet. A Bad Day (Ladybug Reveal) - Marinette is having a really bad day. Like akuma worthy bad. And she is just now realizing how strategically horrible that is. This one is SO CLOSE to being done. I don’t know why it isn’t.  Infidelity (Ladybug Reveal) - Established Adrinette relationship pre-reveal. Adrien and Marinette get into fights because the other one is lying all the time about where they are. Ladybug and Chat Noir confide in each other about their relationship woes and give each other wonderful advice that help Adrien and Marinette learn to actually communicate with each other!  A Letter to my Teenage Self (Ladybug oneshot) - Adult Ladybug full of regret gets thrown back in time with an opportunity to change things, but in talking to her younger self Ladybug finds herself amazed by the young girl before her, and doesn’t want to change a thing about her. This one is just starting to take form. Idea was given to me from my Discord peeps after they asked me what advice I had for my teenage self! Always Enough (Ladybug) - An Adrino story I started like a week ago. I was trying to expand my repertoire by challenging myself to do a non canon relationship. And I love Nino to death and he doesn’t get enough attention. And Adrien is me, so.... I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that 4.5k words in, this became far more autobiographical than I had ever intended.
And honestly, there’s like ten other stories that have been started. But I don’t currently have any active intention of working on them in the near future, so I’ll spare you. And who knows if I will publish all of these either. When I’m stressed, I am not as disciplined about what I’m working on. I just work on what comes. This is not conducive to finishing things, but it is conducive to my mental health.
Anyway, this was fun! I tag @tinacentury, @floraone, @alexseanchai, @ladyofthenoodle, @e-milieeee, @apopcornkernel, @ominousunflower, @chronicallylatetotheparty, @starlingsinclair, and anyone who wants to do it!
No pressure!! (I may have tagged you because I’m selfishly very curious what you’re working on so I know what I have to look forward to maybe at some point! But STILL no pressure!)
