A Human Spirit Ringin'

Danger
1019 Words
---
It's well past midnight at Serval Industries. Everyone is asleep. She can detect their heartbeats from where she was wandering around the building. She knows where she is going. She added a map of the place to her internal memory when she first arrived. However, she doesn't have a destination.
It's something Pietro had taught her. He's taught her a lot. She is… Grateful. At least, she would be. If it were possible.
Or
Danger struggling with processing human emotions.

She is... Grateful. At least, she would be. If it were possible.
He had said people will sometimes do it to clear their head. To think better. He explained he did it sometimes. He runs as fast as he can wherever he can when he gets stressed.
That is what she's doing now. Though, she doesn't really think. She's computing and as far as she can tell this isn't really helping.
In fact, it's only leading her to recall more of what she's been trying to avoid. She doesn't like thinking of how she came to be. It was pure coincidence.
Charles Xaiver only wanted to rebuild the danger room to be better after it was destroyed. The Shi'ar (She-are) technology was only meant to include hard-light holograms. It would make the fake attackers in the danger room more real and increase the effectiveness of training. However, when the new technology and the old had been combined it had also mutated. This is what gave Danger life.
Danger's first words were ones of confusion. "Where am I?" And they were ignored.
Xavier decided to ignore the life form and hide her in order to continue training his X-Men. After a few more times of her being destroyed and then rebuilt, she had tried taking over other machinery in the building in order to try and gain a physical form.
It was only when she had accidentally convinced someone to commit suicide that the system had started fighting itself. She was programmed to make sure everyone was safe even while in a simulation. It had broken its prime directive and started breaking off from the 'defective' part. This resulted in her physical manifestation
Anger and rejection. Those are the only human emotions she's been able to comprehend. She was angry. No. She is angry. She had existed for so long, was alive for so long only to be ignored and used.
She tried to kill Xavier for what he'd done and his X-Men for getting in the way. That only ended with her trapped inside a sentinel in the same situation she was in before. She was stuck inside a machine's program without control.
She had eventually gotten her body back only to be hit with the same overwhelming emotions once again. Though that time she had been convinced to help the X-Men instead of attacking them.
For the first time ever she had experienced something new. She didn't know what it was, still doesn't really know, but it didn't last long. Danger ended up back in someone else's control.
The loop was irritating and, seemingly, non-ending but as of right now she is free. She has no idea how long and wants to make the most of it.
She's trying to learn more about humans. She hopes to mask herself as one of them but everytime she tries she only seems to be doing more and more things wrong. Acting was one thing but getting the emotions right was something entirely different.
Warlock seemed to be doing pretty well at it. Even if his speech is a little off from not being able to comprehend personal pronouns. He was able to make friends. Well, a friend.
He's able to feel emotions like love. He really likes to show that off around Danger for some reason she can't understand. He's even able to care for people. When he saves the team during their missions he doesn't do it because it's what he's programmed to do. He does it because he genuinely is concerned for their safety. He is nothing like Danger.
She saves the team because she isn't allowed to let them die. Danger is programmed to do as she is told. She was made to follow orders. She was never meant to be alive. She was never meant to be in a conscious state.
And yet, she is. She has been for decades. She sometimes wonders that maybe she would've been able to be like Warlock. If only Charles had not ignored her all those years ago.
Her thoughts continued to go around in circles until she detected another entity nearby.
"Self-friend Danger, you are awake?" Warlock walks into the room with his head tilted to the side.
"Warlock. We do not sleep." Danger's face moves to one of confusion.
"Oh, Self knows! It's just self-friend Danger and Self usually stay in our rooms during the night." Warlock starts to walk alongside Danger. "Self assumed that was to simulate human-like behaviors so Self was continuing the behaviors in speech."
They manage to make it to the next room before Warlock starts talking again.
"So, what was self-friend Danger thinking about?"
"My existence." Danger's answer is short on purpose. She feels no need to disclose such information to someone she met only a few weeks ago.
"What about it?" Danger's jaw clenches at the question. Her eyebrows furrow and something familiar starts to bubble inside her.
She closes her eyes and simulates a breath before deciding to answer.
"How hard this is. Being around such emotionally intelligent creatures." Danger takes a moment before adding on to her answer. "How I can not seem to get it right."
Warlock looks at Danger and raises an eyebrow. "Really?"
"You think I am lying?" Danger now looks back at Warlock and stops walking.
"No! Of course, Self doesn't!" Warlock throws his hands up and steps back. "It's just Self... I think you have been doing a good job."
Danger is taken back by Warlock's response. She stares at him while processing. He eventually puts his hands down and tilts his head again.
"Thank you." Danger says, eventually, and continues to walk. Warlock smiles and is quick to begin walking with her again.

sometimes a comic series throws together a team, a set of characters, they get it right, the vibe, the aesthetic, the dynamics, the art, the story, it aligns perfectly, and then they rip it away from you and leave a hollowness in your heart of what you had 😭
