The Unsleeping City Future HC
David Kugrich wanted to make sure that his son, Matt, wasn't treated the same way he was by his father, but he ended up going too far in the opposite direction and spoiled him rotten. As a result, before his encounter with the Unsleeping City, he was almost completely incapable of fending for himself, as well as extremely irresponsible. He first found out about New York's magical community after he was caught in the crossfire between Alejandra, Catherine and Langston and a group of pixie mobsters, during which he was transformed into a chimpanzee. (This is not much of an improvement over what happened to his grandfather.) Now, Matt has to journey with the Dream Teens to try to get changed back, all the while learning not to be such a brat along the way. He even manages to get in touch with his grandfather.

my personal TUC: Next Gen class headcanons
al matsui-sinclair: battle smith artificer. she has a knack for the arcane inherited from her mother and an instinct for protection and healing inherited from her father. her steel defender is a metal dog named ox jr.
cat lee: hexblade warlock / phantom rogue multiclass. la gran gata becomes her patron at a young age, and i can see her being a weird little goth who's fascinated by death due to her origin story, hence phantom rogue.
langston brown-herrera: peace cleric. hear me out, because i know draconic bloodline sorcerer is the obvious option, but comparing langston to iga or the shens, i don't think it makes much sense. considering that the dragon of bleecker street's one regret was not living a life as a human, i think it makes most sense for langston to take after his vox populi father, but with a subclass focused specifically on the bonds between people.

i’ll hold you my darling (don’t you worry)
based off of this writing game!! my prompt was including these 3 words: sleepy, night, and car ride
[AO3]
The night was a quiet one as Ricky drove. Esther was in the passenger seat next to him and he glanced over at a red light to see her head lolling back, adorably sleepy. A small smile set on his face, he turned back to the road, sighing quietly in contentment.
The car ride wasn’t filled with chatter. The two sat in a space that was their own, full of comfortable silence and something that was just uniquely them, something that had Ricky’s heart practically bursting with love. Arriving at the Clinton Hill Chantry, Ricky parked the car in their usual spot and got out, rushing over to the passenger side to open Esther’s door.
Shaking her shoulder lightly, he said quietly, “We’re here.”
Esther blinked up at him, blearily confused and having fallen asleep a few minutes earlier. “What?” she mumbled, out of it.
Chuckling lightly, he gave her a fond look. “We’re home, Esther.”
“...oh.”
“Do you need help getting up?” Ricky asked, fully ready to carry her.
“Um,” Esther said, only slightly more awake. “Probably. Yes.”
Ricky beamed at her, sweeping her up in a bridal carry. Long since used to it, Esther only looped her arms around his neck and settled back into his embrace.
“I love you,” he said quietly, gazing at her with pure love and adoration in his eyes.
“Love you too, babe,” Esther muttered, leaning her head against his neck.
Smiling besottedly, Ricky carried her into the chantry and up into the clocktower, walking carefully to not jostle Esther too much.
Setting her down gently onto the couch, he said to her, “I’m going to go get ready for bed, alright? You should do the same unless you want to grumble about it in the morning,” he teased her lightly.
“Yeah, yeah,” the wizard replied, contemplating even getting up at all.
A few minutes later, Ricky walked back into their living room to see Esther, in pajamas, laying on her back and looking up at the ceiling, glaring at it as if it had done something wrong.
“...the ceiling insult you or–”
“No. I have no fiance to hold,” she grumbled, squinting her eyes.
Laughing lightly, Ricky simply said, “You can hold me all you want when we lay in our bed, which this is not.”
Letting out a long-suffering sigh, Esther reluctantly got up, stumbling to their room where she proceeded to collapse onto their bed, holding out her arms for Ricky. Smiling at her, Ricky complied, slotting into her arms and burrowing his face into her neck. Esther rested her face in his hair, a small, content smile on her face now. She squeezed him gently, which had Ricky smiling as well.
“I love you,” Esther said quietly.
“I love you too,” Ricky replied, relaxing in her embrace. The pair held each other, drifting slowly off to sleep until they woke up in the morning, holding each other, happy and in love.
a/n: i think this is the first dimension 20 fanfic ive written? anyways i wrote this in like 15 minutes and i just wanted to write rickyesther being soft and in love <3

okay but the next generation i am actively sobbing
kingston babysits after he retires and regales all of the littles about his old technology and the things that aren't there anymore - actively five-year-olds who have a working knowledge of 80s hip-hop and rock as they dance around his living room
they all have play dates, langston in the year ahead of al and cat, and so after school ricky stands there with his hands on his hips supervising a slightly magical whiffleball game amongst the three of them, seven and eight years old now, smile on his iips as ox chases their feet and ball
sofia giving them basic self-defense, showing them pressure points at 12 and 13, telling them about the secrets of the sacred rat and whenever they ask about why they protect new york, why this city is so important, why its people matter to their families, giving them the tales of kugrash and how his legacy carries on, from the littlest cockroach to the brightest unicorn, from staten island to ellis island, from central park carousel to fairyland

go back to where i’m meant to be
alejandra matsui & catherine lee & langston brown, 23.6k, dimension 20: the unsleeping city chapter 2
Langston starts to back up, figuring that that’s what she meant, but as he does so, the thing begins to - well, not speak, exactly, because it doesn’t have a mouth, but that’s the best way Langston can think to describe the way the water shifts in what could be seen as lips moving to speak.
“Langston Brown. Alejandra Matsui-Sinclair. Catherine Lee,” it says, voice low and rumbling. Langston feels his stomach drop - until this point, he was willing to let this pass as some sort of weird mass delusion - he’s heard of things like that happening before. But now, this thing has said his name, and the names of his best friends, and it feels like this is something much more real than that.
or, cat, al, and langston uncover the magic world and slowly unravel the secrets of the unsleeping city
happy @d20bigbang ! i had the pleasure of working with steven ( @midnightfox450 and @/midnightfox452 on twitter) and bee alexander ( @beece and @/boothskeletons on twitter) to crank out this bad boy! i could not be more happy with how this turned out and i hope you enjoy it!! the (absolutely gorgeous) art that steven made is embedded in the fic, and i’ll also link it here <3

Unsleeping City Season 3 as Sci-Fi
You know I wasn’t really too excited when they first announced that they’re going back to Unsleeping City. I mean I knew it would still be good; it’s Dimension 20, it’s always good. And I understand why they did it with the pandemic being completely draining and just generally harder to plan for, so this made sense to ease the transition into Roll20. But it’s an anthology show and going back to anything other than Fantasy High felt weird. Not to mention at the time it felt like the story of the Unsleeping City was done and I wanted a significantly fresh setting and Unsleeping City 2 wasn’t that.
But Unsleeping City 3 CAN be.
So it’s no secret that after the end of Season 2 everyone is clamoring to hear more about the toddlers and how they grow up. And I’m excited for that too but what I think everyone is missing in this discussion is just how big a time gap this would be. Chapter 2 already takes place in the near future of 2022 to avoid quarantine and give some extra space for the characters to process the events of season 1. The epilogue is another 3 years in the future making it 2025. Guys if we want next return to the Unsleeping City to revolve around the next generation then the stories going to be at least 2042 at like the earliest that i can see it. (they could do a rug rats mode but I can’t really see the cast putting children in the combats that D&D requires and are established as cannon in the Unsleeping City verse)
Unsleeping City has always been about the New York we know vs. what it could be and what’s lying underneath. And especially with season 2 being largely about keeping a connection to history, season 3 could echo that even further with a near future cyberpunk NYC with floating cars, internet implants, and new corporates monopolies that won’t risk the entire cast being sued!
Imagine JJ breaking off part of the society from an older Esther to form an ARtificer’s guild that combines magic and new emerging technologies. Esther is furious but even more so that her own daughter, Alejandra, is interested in joining! Cat is trying to find anything she can do to rebel against her loving monk parents by becoming a warlock and fully embracing the magic once again questioning the Monastery’s place in this new New York City. Meanwhile, Langston Brown always knew they were adopted but about their Draconic heritage until the death of their beloved father. At the funeral Langston awakens and realizes just how much of the Unsleeping City was happening all around them without them every realizing it, eventually prompting an ageing Pete to step in and play a similar mentor role to Langston that Kingston played to him.
Even the Lisowski siblings can get in on the action by being established in their fields at this time. I know Brennan said that Nick was a Hexblade Warlock but come on, his power comes from his dead grandmothers aiding him in physical battle. That guy is definitely a path of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian. Which is interesting cause Jessica learned much of her wizardry from literal vampires which might make her want to specialize in Necromancy. I can imagine that disconnect between souls and Bodies (respecting the dead vs. not respecting the dead) could also drive a wedge between them in a possible schism in Gramercy.
