Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
The Gray Ghost
the hero of a popular television series, The Gray Ghost was portrayed by Actor Simon Trent. The show was a favorite of a child-aged Bruce Wayne, who watched the show with his parents. The dynamic, costumed vigilante helped shape the persona Bruce Wayne adopted later in his life when he became The Batman.
Following the eventual cancellation of The Gray Ghost, Trent had difficulty finding subsequent work as an actor. He’s face had become so synonymous with the Gray Ghost that directors worried he would prove distracting in different roles. Type casting ruined his career and Trent fell on hard financial times. He was forced to sell off much of his Gray Ghost memorabilia in order to pay for rent and other expenses.
Simon Trent was sought out by Batman when it was determined that a series of bombing was following the storyline of an old episode of The Gray Ghost. Working together, Trent and Batman were able to determine the bombings were being conducted by a deranged toy collector named Ted Dymer. The two put a stop to Dymer’s reign of terror and the day was saved.
After portraying a hero on television for such a long time, it was quite something for Trent to be a part of the real thing. It was also a fulfilling revelation for him to learn that The Gray Ghost had helped to inspire The Batman.
Afterward, Wayne Enterprises helped Trent utilize his old copies of the Gray Ghost television serial into a successful home-theater launch that enabled him to become financially solvent.
Adam West provided the voice and in many ways the inspiration for Simon Trent/The Grey Ghost. West had portrayed Batman in the much-loved 1966 television show. And he also experienced difficulties with type-casting in that his recognizability as Batman made it almost impossible for him to land subsequent acting roles. Years later, West's voice acting performance on Batman: The Animated Series helped to lead to many more voice acting roles, reinvigorating his career.
The Gray Ghost appearing in the thirty-second episode of season one of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Beware The Gray Ghost.’
