Ace Info Compilation part 2: Ace and the Prefect(pt1)
Ace may have a closer relationship to the prefect than any other character.
He has an impressive number of voice lines that reference the prefect, inviting them out to eat, to visit Heartslabyul, to his birthday party and inviting himself over to Ramshackle dorm for card games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace’s first meeting with the prefect involves Ace mocking both them and Grim for not being admitted to the school and being forced to work as janitors.
When he is ejected from Heartslabyul for stealing a piece of tart Ramshackle Dorm is possibly the first place he goes, encouraging the prefect to let him share their bed for the night (“I’m real slim. I won’t take up much space.”)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace offers to share a bed with the prefect again in Book 3 and when they refuse he claims, “I was kidding anyway.”
When Grim runs off in Book 1 Ace offers to help “the worst prefect to ever set foot on campus” in exchange for a chocolate croissant (Deuce requests an iced latte).
In the EN adaptation Ace asks for the Prefect’s Magicam ID so that they can keep in touch during winter break in case the prefect gets bored, but his original line is, “if you get lonely.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Prefect does contact Ace and Deuce for help during Book 4 but they are unable to reach the campus in time, having been forced to take public transportation.
(NRC is difficult to reach when not traveling by mirror, requiring at least one train, two bus trips and two ferries.)
Ace brings snacks to Ramshackle in Book 5 “to share some with (Prefect) and the others” and when he learns of the prefect’s nickname for Malleus he says, “Do you have a death wish!?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Prefect calls both Ace and Deuce over late at night during Book 6 after being attacked by Grim, and Ace insists on patching up the prefect’s hand.
When Deuce fails to make a convincing argument about whether or not they should trust Grim, Ace asks the prefect what they would like to do, and volunteers to join the hunt to find him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a flashback we see Ace playing basketball with the prefect against Deuce and Grim and asking, “Ever think about joining the basketball club?”
We also see Grim steal an omelet from Deuce that Ace offers to replace, as he has already stolen part of the prefect’s Salisbury steak.
Ace also offers to do the prefect’s makeup, do homework together and tells them that he worries about them because they “seem slow on the uptake sometimes.”

Ace Info Compilation part 3: Ace and the Prefect(pt2)
Ace says he has a hard time taking Rook’s compliments and asks for the Prefect’s opinion during the Phantom Bride event.
When the Prefect compliments him he says, “Well, I guess I HAVE to believe it now.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to late-night card games, it seems that Ace also uses Ramshackle for movie nights: in a vignette it is referenced that he and the Prefect are watching a horror movie together with Grim.
During Halloween Grim and the prefect thank Ace for realizing that they wouldn’t have costumes and going out of his way to bring it up.
Ace responds, “Don’t read into it TOO much…if you wanna thank anyone, thank the ghosts.”
While both Ace and Deuce go to the ghosts, we never see the prefect thank Deuce for his role; only Ace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the beginning of Spectral Soiree Ace is the only person who is worried about (or remembers) the prefect and Grim, going to Ramshackle Dorm despite the emergency to find them.
When he realizes that they went into the Spectral Realm willingly as Malleus’ guests Ace responds, “Do you guys have ANY idea how worried I was!? Seriously!? Okay, after this, we’re gonna have a nice, long chat where you can explain it all.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the party Ace says he feels “like a total chump” for rushing to rescue the prefect and Grim, when they were never in any danger from the start.
Ace becomes frustrated with the prefect, Grim and Deuce equally after Spectral Soiree, asking Deuce if there “was anything else you wanted to say” after he compliments the Halloween party when speaking with Malleus.
Ace decides to take some time away from the group to come to terms with the situation (“Those guys aren’t taking this seriously at all. And here I was sweatin’ bullets when they disappeared.”) only to come face-to-face with Malleus and Lilia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace insists that he is not in the mood to be teased and Lilia says that Ace must have been lonely without Deuce, Grim and the prefect.
Ace says that he only, grudgingly, lets the three follow him around, and Lilia mentions seeing the four shopping together at the school store, while Malleus says that he has seen Ace both shopping with them and showing them magic tricks. Ace says, “Again, we’re just in the same class. You don’t have to read anything into it!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace seems to get along better with Grim than most other students, possibly because they have so much in common. The two are often bickering, and Ace expresses concern that Grim has caught a cold, though this was changed to “Got a fur ball or somethin’?” on EN.
Both Ace and Deuce express frustration with the lighthearted way that Grim and the prefect greet them when they return at the end of Book 6.

Ace Info Compilation part 1: Family
Ace mentions his brother often, finding a way to reference him during the opening ceremonies, Wish Upon a Star, the main story, Halloween and multiple vignettes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His older brother is his only sibling, seven years older, a former Heartslabyul student and NRC graduate.
Ace explains that it was his brother who taught him how to lie convincingly.
It is possible that there is a picture of Ace’s brother at the school: Ace says that he led a card soldier parade at the Spelldrive opening ceremony when he was a student, and Cater says there is a photo hanging in the hall by the teacher’s lounge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The brothers seem very close: Ace says that he thinks his brother was happier than his parents when they found out he was accepted into NRC, and Ace falls asleep during an awards ceremony for Deuce, saying, “I was chatting with my brother until the wee hours this a.m., so I gotta catch up on sleep.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During Halloween it is insinuated that Ace might not very good with children: he is impressed with how Jade, Floyd and Jamil interact with the campus’ younger visitors, and Floyd says that “it’s nothing special.” Jamil says that he will get the hang of it eventually. This may be because Ace is the youngest in his family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We get a lot of information about Ace’s brother during his birthday vignette: Ace says that his brother once blew out his birthday candles on purpose, and one year he pranked Ace by presenting him with a box containing a watch that he had bought for himself. “Then he goes, ‘No, that’s mine. This is yours.’ AND HE HANDS ME THE EMPTY BOX.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace talks about his brother with Riddle and Cater, saying that “he built up a whole repertoire of magic tricks” as a student at NRC, and Ace taught himself how to perform them by memorizing what he did, as his brother refused to give away his secrets.
Ace says that it was actually his father who first got him into sleight-of-hand, however, as his father is not a mage (unlike his sons) but can still do illusions and old-fashioned magic tricks.
Ace says that he thinks their father is who inspired his brother as well, and “Whenever I visit home, we show off what we can do and challenge each other to spot the trick.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Having a magic-less father possibly played a part in enraging Ace to the point of punching Riddle, after Riddle mocks both him and Deuce for being “born to parents with no great magical capability”).
Ace mentions his grandmother who both knows what a ghost camera is and would caution him about overusing his magic, insinuating that she may be a mage as well.

Ace Info Compilation part 19: Ace and Deuce (pt2)
Ace describes Deuce as “a boar who charges headfirst into everything. His internal breaks are busted. I feel like he sees me as a rival. I’d wipe the floor with him if he ever wanted to throw down, of course.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace’s bullying is a theme throughout Book 5: Ace forces a piece of apple pie into Deuce's mouth (breaking Vil’s rules about snacks), and when Deuce gets lectured by Vil for trying to stand up for Epel Ace says, “You’re not exactly smart about this stuff.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce gets frustrated with Ace constantly insulting his intelligence and runs off, but Ace doesn’t seem to understand that he has done anything wrong.
Grim says that he should really start thinking about other people’s feelings before he speaks and Ace responds, “Why should a guy with his act together walk on eggshells around a guy slowing down the team? We’re doing the same rehearsals. Not my fault he can’t do the moves.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is followed by a scene of Deuce revealing how much Ace’s comments really do bother him, and he and Epel make a pact to win the VDC and prove themselves to both Ace and Vil.
Deuce follows up afterwards and Ace says, “You’d better not be expecting an apology.”
Deuce responds, “I’m not letting you outshine me” and Ace becomes confused, asking, “Did he just declare war on me? Is he nuts? That knucklehead wouldn’t outshine me in a million years.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Deuce learns his unique magic at the end of the story Ace mocks it, at first, as “just a way to get payback for when you get in fights,” but soon admits his shock at Deuce mastering the spell before him.
Ace and Deuce seem to be considered as something of a set by the other students, with Trey attempting to tempt Ace into a study session by offering to call in Deuce as well. Ace insists, “We’re not a married couple, you know!”
Ace does seem to know Deuce very well: during Wish Upon a Star he comments that “If I know Deuce—and I think I do by now—he’s gonna be so freaked out he’s frozen stiff,” and the scene cuts to Deuce looking terrified by his imminent performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Deuce disappears during Spectral Soiree Ace says, “I’m not exactly worried about Deuce, but I guess it is too quiet without him.”
During Phantom Bride we see Ace manipulate Deuce into volunteering by telling him that Trey is waiting for him “to swoop in and save the day.”
Cater comments, “Oh, Deucey. You can’t even see how he’s playing you.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace is extremely confident going into Beanfest, telling Deuce that “horsepower alone doesn’t cut it” and “you gotta have brainpower to make the right calls."
Deuce says he won’t let Ace capture him, if nothing else, but then the game begins with Ace and Sebek setting up an ambush that Deuce walks right into (after being tricked by Cater).
Deuce manages to outrun them to the point that he reaches Riddle, who takes out both Sebek and Ace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce reflects that Ace was correct about not being able to depend on horsepower alone but Riddle points out, “At least Ace got knocked out of the game a few minutes ago,” not specifying the fact that it was he who took him out.
Despite the bickering and competitiveness, however, when Deuce gets into trouble with three Heartslabyul upperclassmen Ace is quick to save him by pretending that Vargas is approaching, which sends the bullies running.
Deuce reacts with “Where’s Coach Vargas? Did he leave?”
Despite everything that Deuce puts up with, he still picks up a souvenir for Ace during the Glorious Masquerade event: "You can get caramels like these in the Queendom of Roses. But here in Fleur City, they've got a salted butter flavor. I should get some of these for Ace."

Ace Info Compilation part 10: Standing Up
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace standing up to people in positions of authority who are objectively stronger than himself is a running theme: he accuses Trey directly of enabling Riddle (calling him pathetic), stands up to Riddle’s tyranny in Book 1 despite knowing his painful history, is the first student in Book 3 to try (and fail) to stand up against Azul, defends Epel from Vil in the opening of Book 5 and argues with Vil outright about his strict lifestyle rules, getting poisoned for his efforts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace also tells Leona that it is “typical” for him to be “skipping out on the actual work,” saying, “Aren’t you supposed to be a housewarden? How about showin’ some leadership?” to his face.
Even after Leona proves himself Ace says, “I admit that’s helpful, but still…”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace is also harsh with Riddle outside of the main story, despite being his own housewarden: when Riddle loses his temper at a ghost during phantom bride (the ghost called him short) and sets it on fire, Ace scolds him for ruining their plans, saying, “You’re the lousiest suitor out of anyone who’s come so far!” despite Riddle’s apology.
Ace has a habit of saying the quiet part out loud in general, even when he is speaking to an upperclassman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He insults Trey’s singing to his face and behind his back, teases Leona about Cheka, says that, for Diasomnia, Lilia is unusually friendly and complains about Jamil’s food in front of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace also pressures Rook to admit that he actually voted for Neige during the VDC as a devoted fan rather than because he was impressed with Neige's performance.
When Vil offers to compensate the VDC team for the prize money that his overblot made them lose out on, almost every team member immediately promises to donate their portion to Ramshackle dorm, with Ace following with, “talk about peer pressure.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce also struggles with the pressure to donate (“That money would go a long way for my family. But still…”) and Ace assures him, “Oh, I’m taking the money…I’ve been eyeing some new clothes and shoes lately.”
In exchange for keeping his prize money, Ace says he will treat the prefect and Grim to lunch at the school cafeteria. (Deuce offers lattes and dessert.)
Jamil says that Ace is closer to the third-year students in the basketball club than himself and Floyd and Ace himself says that he gets along well with upperclassmen from other dorms, so it is possible that he is just not intimidated by older students in general, thus why he is always able to speak his mind so freely (possibly a result of his older brother’s influence).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riddle might be the only person who see call Ace out on his casual way of speaking to his upperclassmen, saying that Ace’s use of phrases like “stuff my face” is not any way to speak to his housewarden, he uses “uncouth language” and he wishes that Ace would dress properly more often as he can look like “quite the gentleman.”
Ace does, however, use honorifics with his, upperclassmen, referring to the 2nd- and 3rd- year students as “first-name-senpai.”
He refers to his fellow 1st-years just by their first names and he calls Sam, “Sam-san.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He usually just calls Riddle “Housewarden,” but he will sometimes say “Housewarden Riddle” as opposed to Deuce’s “Housewarden Rosehearts” (every member of Heartslabyul on the main cast refers to Riddle in a different way.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace teases Jack for looking so out of place as a “buff and brawny” person from Sunset Savanna at Heartlsabyul.
Jack points out that he is from the Shaftlands, to Ace’s surprise (“I thought everyone from there was all flashy and dapper and stuff.”)
Riddle insists that he sees “nothing amiss” about Jack being in the lounge and scolds Ace for being so narrow-minded about other countries and cultures.

Ace Info Compilation part 9: Ace, Malleus and Trey
Malleus says that he is glad he came to NRC because he was able to meet an interesting person who is not afraid of him. When Ace asks if he is means the Prefect, Malleus responds that he also means Ace himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is possibly a reference to Spectral Soiree when Ace tells Malleus that the act of kidnapping 600 students and pretending to be possessed by a ghost as a form of entertainment was “not cool.”
Ace tells him outright that he needs to “PLEASE try to show some awareness of how overwhelmingly powerful you are. You’re THE Malleus Draconia.”
Lilia says he is surprised by Ace voicing a complaint to Malleus directly and Malleus observes, “Most students at school keep their distance. And rather a few of them flee at the sight of me. But not you. You spoke your mind openly and honestly, and without the aid of others.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of Ace’s earlier interactions with Trey involves Trey convincing him to add oyster sauce to a strawberry tart, and then mocking him for believing it. We learn in a voice line that—much like how Cater invited Deuce to join the Pop Music Club—Trey has invited Ace to the Science Club, but Ace turned him down because it sounded boring.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a vignette Ace lies to Trey’s face in an attempt to learn answers to an upcoming exam saying that he he didn’t want to ask directly as all Trey would tell him to do is study. Trey offers to tutor him and Ace agrees, saying, “At least you’ll be a lot nicer of a tutor than Riddle.”
Ace causes trouble for Trey in another vignette where he asks Trey to bake a cherry pie for an upcoming Unbirthday Party instead of his usual cakes, inspiring other Heartslabyul students to start submitting requests as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace insists, “But you’re a pro, Trey. You could improvise!…I know I’d love to have a different type of cake every time.”
Trey decides to let the first-years make their own cake. Deuce calls Ace out for complaining about Ace’s cakes but Ace assures him, “Trey’s a chill guy. It’d take more than that to get him mad. If he got made over that, he’d never be able to manage our short-fused housewarden.”
The first-years’ cake is a disaster, they blame Ace for the mess they make and Riddle threatens everyone with collars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trey interrupts just in time with a proper cake for the party and says, “That’s why things are done in a certain, ‘samey’ way. Maintaining the peace is no easy task’ and Ace asks, “Uh, just to be clear, you ARE talking about baking, right? ‘Cause it sounds like you’re talking about the housewarden.”
Trey refuses to let any of the first-year students share his cake until they have eaten all of their own culinary disaster and Ace responds, “So much for Trey being ‘kindhearted and mature’.”
In a different vignette Ace tries to get away with brushing his teeth only once in the evening, contrary to a Queen’s of Heart’s rule, and Trey appears behind him to force him to follow through.
Trey lectures them on the importance of dental hygiene and Ace says, “My preschool teacher babied me less than you…you’re just some kind of weird dentistry nerd! I’m honestly freaked out by how into this you are.”

Ace Info Compilation part 15: Lying(pt1)
Ace is wholly capable of lying to someone’s face without reservation.
He tries to convince Trey that he is helping him carry supplies from the school store in exchange for a slice of cherry tart. Trey is suspicious but Ace insists, “You’re lookin’ at the very picture of innocence over here!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a long conversation it is revealed that Ace was actually trying to trick Trey into sharing information about an upcoming exam.
He weaponizes this skill during Book 3 to help Jack and the others infiltrate a museum, distracting a guard by talking about how he has always admired merfolk society.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This seems to be normal for Ace: during Phantom Bride Grim says that “spoutin’ off a bunch stuff he doesn’t believe” is what Ace usually does.
We also see Ace try to distract Riddle from the fact he is not studying for an upcoming quiz via card tricks (while insulting Deuce), but the attempt fails.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In his labwear vignette Ace goes directly against Jamil’s instructions to stay put instead convincing Ruggie to allow him to help out with his mandrake-selling operation.
Ruggie overinflates Ace’s ego (“Even a warthog can fly if you inflate its ego enough”) and Ace gets into trouble, saved by Ruggie and Jamil, who help clean up his mess.
Ace thanks them by stealing Ruggie’s own mandrakes to sell to the ghosts, saying, “I thought I could get away with it while you guys were talkin’ among yourselves.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jamil calls him incorrigible, and Ace says he will take it as a compliment.
Jamil seems to have to put up with Ace’s bad habits often, accusing him of stealing food off his plate when they eat together and calling him “utterly shameless.”
Riddle seems well aware of Ace’s underhandedness, accusing him of trying to steal Rook’s idea for seducing Eliza during the Phantom Bride event.

Ace Info Compilation part 12: Wind Magic, pranks and more
Ace seems to particularly excel at wind-based magic, which we see him use at the very start of the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is also the magic that he uses as collateral for his contract with Azul, and when trying to fight without it he resorts to stealing Deuce’s idea for cauldron-summoning instead.
Ace seems fond of pranks, with Jamil saying that Ace once left a toy bug on his bag after basketball practice (Jamil hates bugs extremely). Jamil says he knows that Ace did it and “You can rest assured I got him back thoroughly.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see Ace possibly attempting to convince Deuce to use cooking ingredients during an alchemy lesson, and Grim claims Ace has tried to prank him during flight class at least once.
In a Chat we see that Ace once successfully tricked Deuce into believing that his watch (with no date display) was running two days late, leading Deuce to apologizing to his teachers for being two days late to classes before he realizes he has been tricked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace is the only character we actually see get possessed during Spectral Soiree (the others all being already possessed by the time they appear).
He gets taken over by a ghost who physically threatens Floyd and Leona, and they both proceed to beat him up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace says that he is good with his hands, having practiced sleight-of-hand tricks so much that now he can perform them equally well with either hand. “I’m right-handed, but I can still do things like building a card tower with my left.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He spends a significant part of a vignette impressing Riddle with a magic-less card trick and seems to have taught Grim a magic trick involving a coin, but he says that “magic tricks that use live animals are extra hard.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace says he gets exhausted around Vargas ("He's so fanatical and full of himself...") and that he's "not really into that whole 'tan and jacked' look, so (he's) fine taking it easy with exercising."
Red is Ace's favorite color ("in-your-face and classy, which is perfect for me")

Ace Info Compilation part 7: Lying(pt2)
In addition to stealing, Deuce says that Ace cheats “the entire time” when they play card games, “so it isn’t fun at all.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see this in action in a vignette where Ace invites Jack to play cards at Heartslabyul and insists that they both play while wearing their ceremonial robes. Ace wins the game, claiming that “it’s all luck” and that Jack has to wash his robes, as the penalty for the loser of their game.
Jack, however, realizes that Ace had been cheating the entire time with extra cards in the sleeve of his robe, and Ace is entirely unapologetic and unembarrassed, saying, “Bah. Fine. You got me.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riddle assigns Ace the punishment of collecting and washing the robes of every member of the dorm with Jack following to make sure he does the job.
Ace butts heads with Jack during the main story as well, saying that he understands the perspective of the Savanaclaw students who are trying to sabotage the Spelldrive tournament as “How well they do…could make or break their careers. If that’s their motive, well it isn’t hard to understand where there’s comin’ from.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also see Ace try to escape tooth-brushing required by the Queen's rules by flattering Trey, who doesn't let him get away with it.
During the Spectral Soiree event Ace strikes up a conversation with Leona by asking him if he is afraid of anything, and their conversation is interrupted by Epel crying for help.
They find Epel tied to a tombstone (by Floyd) and Ace starts flattering Leona for taking immediate action. Leona responds, “You knew Floyd was gonna use someone as bait, didn’t you?” and Ace confesses, “…You were onto me, huh?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leona reveals that Ace’s “Are you afraid of anything?” question gave him away at the start.“You probably thought you’d be safe if you stuck close to me. You made a calculated choice to abandon Epel to his fate and use me as a shield. That was pretty shrewd.”
Ace thanks him for the compliment, saying to Leona that, “It’s you an’ me from now on!”
Not long after, however, Ace reveals his true feelings about Leona when they meet up with a possessed Idia. Leona is not amused and responds, “from now on, you’re on your own,” much to Epel’s delight.

Ace Info Compilation part 7: Ace and Riddle(pt3)
Ace says that Vil gives off the same vibes as Riddle and tells Jack, “Mistake (Riddle) for a friendly hedgehog and you’ll quickly learn he’s actually a furious porcupine,” but he seems fond of Riddle all the same: While dealing with Floyd and Leona during Spectral Soiree he says, “These guys are like oil and water. I’d take the teapot tyrant any day! Oh, Housewarden Riddle, if only you could get me out of this mess!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He confesses to finding Riddle “cool” at the end of the Phantom Bride event, saying, “When I saw our housewarden taking down all those ghosts single-handed…it makes me wanna get better at using magic. Maybe right now I can’t hold a candle to our housewarden or the older students…but one of these days, I’m gonna show ‘em something spectacular...gives me a rush just thinking about how they’ll look when they see my sick spellcasting.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace seems fond of receiving compliments in general and from Riddle in particular: When Riddle compliments Jack during Fairy Gala IF Ace interrupts their conversation with, “I’m the guy who got this whole crew together, just sayin’.”
After helping Cater in a vignette he intentionally makes an appeal to Riddle, saying, “Don’t forget that I helped bail Cater out when he was in trouble, okay?” (Riddle says “Must you flatter yourself so, Ace?” and both he and Trey proceed to point out that Ace’s help was actually all according to Cater’s plan.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace says that it “felt pretty great” to impress Riddle with his card tricks and when Riddle thanks him for finding Heartslabyul’s lost hedgehogs he responds with, “Wish you’d flash me that nice little smile more often instead of nagging me nonstop.”
Riddle comments that Ace “must have excellent spatial awareness,” much to Ace’s surprise (“You’re…actually complimenting me?”).
Ace proceeds to save Riddle from a rogue Spelldrive disc and becomes irate with Leona for putting Riddle in danger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leona says, “Riddle woulda batted that little disc away with his magic, no problem,” and Riddle confirms that he was never in any danger. Ace responds, “I just did all that for nothing!”
Riddle seems aware of Ace’s love of praise and weaponizes it to trick him into joining the group during the Phantom Bride event by comparing him unfavorably to Epel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is possible that the EN team forgot that “Monsieur Heart” is Rook’s nickname for Ace—not Riddle—in this scene: Rook’s original line is “Monsieur Heart is endearingly contrary,” but as the word “contrary” wouldn’t make sense in reference to Riddle, it was changed to “endearingly devious.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Rook is talking about Ace, however, not about Riddle, on EN this means that Rook is paradoxically complimenting Ace for being “devious” after he has been tricked.

Ace Info Compilation part 8: Basketball and Mimicry
In an early vignette we see Ace having trouble with deciding which club he wants to join, telling Deuce that “…unlike SOME people who are only good at physical stuff, I’ve got my eye on clubs of a more sophisticated nature, so I need to take my time.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He ends up joining the basketball club, and we get a brief look at Floyd hurling basketballs at him “like a freight train” during his first week.
Riddle reacts with surprise that Ace joined a team activity, saying that his behavior in the dorm gives the impression he would be more interested in individual sports.
We see Ace being diligent during a basketball club practice where he is looking to “land a spot as a first-stringer” despite being a first-year student, and Jamil says he is “a deft hand at basketball.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace struggles to keep Floyd focused during practices, with Jamil attempting to abandon them both. When Floyd starts trying to teach himself to breakdance Jamil takes over, at which point Ace gives up on getting them to play at all.
This exchange is referenced in Book 5 when Ace asks Jamil about teaching himself, Grim, Deuce and the prefect to dance for the VDC.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace says that “overly enthusiastic sport stuff” is too much for him and “I know I play sports, but I just don’t ‘get’ the athletic mindset…”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In his dorm vignette we see that Ace has an impressive short-term memory, is adept at mimicking those around him, or both: he learns multiple lines in mole language from Rook in order to coax missing hedgehogs into returning to Heartslabyul.
During Fairy Gala IF Ace heckles Jack so badly that Jack is not able to focus on his performance, leading him to insist that Ace demonstrate a runway walk so that he can mock him right back, in revenge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace surprises and impresses Vil, Jack, Silver and Lila with his runway walk despite having never attempted it before.
When asked how he managed it Ace explains, “I just did what Vil’s been telling you to do,” with Vil observing, “You picked all that up just from listening? What skill.”
Ace says, “Please, it’s not hard. In fact, it boggles my mind that you guys are still having trouble after Vil’s laid things out multiple times.”
(This scene combined with Ace’s interactions with Deuce seem to insinuate that he has very little patience for people who are not able to pick up skills as smoothly and naturally as he himself can.)

Ace explains that he learned slight-of-hand by memorizing his brother’s motions since his brother refused to teach him directly, and Cater compliments him on being able to pick things up on his own and think so quickly on his feet.
Ace explains, “Most things, you can imitate if you see ‘em enough and pay enough attention.”
Riddle takes the opportunity to point out that Ace ought to apply his impressive powers of memorization to memorizing the Queen of Hearts’ Code and the chronologies of magic history and Ace explains, “That’s totally different! I’m not good at rote memorization!”

Ace Info Compilation part 18: Ace and Deuce (pt1)
Ace’s first reaction to seeing Deuce at the opening ceremonies is, “Dude looks as serious as a heart attack...bet we’ll get on like oil and water.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite this, the first thing he does when speaking to Deuce directly for the first time is try to convince him to sneak out of a welcome party and into the Headmage’s office.
When Cater catches them in the act Ace says, “We’re so grateful that you put (the party) together for us. Right?” and Deuce backs him up with, “Uh, yes! Yes, of course.”
Deuce backs Ace up again in Book 1 as the only Heartslabyul student to support his efforts to stand against Riddle.

The two interact for the first time in the Main Story during the Prologue when Deuce drops a cauldron on Ace in an attempt to keep him from ditching out on his punishment for setting one of the school’s statues on fire. Neither student can remember the other’s name, at first, with Ace referring to Deuce as Juice.
After Grim runs away the two track him to the cafeteria, with Deuce using magic to launch Ace at a chandelier, which then breaks. Everyone—including the prefect—is expelled as a result.
Ace has an issue with Deuce attempting to become the leader of the team as they search for a new magestone for the chandelier (which will allow them to stay in school), and after their first interaction with the monster in the mine Ace declares, “You want that stone so bad, go get it yourself. I’m out.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace and Deuce bicker in almost every event, vignette and storyline in which they appear together, and these fights are often instigated by Ace: he disparages Deuce’s halloween costume idea and greets Deuce on the first day of the New Year with mockery for no apparent reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They spend the majority of a vignette insulting each other’s magic ability, and when they get color magic on Floyd he is quick to assign blame to Deuce. Ace also complains about Deuce during Halloween, encouraging other Heartslabyul students to insult Deuce’s acting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce rarely goes after Ace without any instigation, though he does tease him for his poor behavior during New Year’s (after Ace has already been rude).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace often insults Deuce for no apparent reason: during Vargas camp he tells Floyd that Deuce would be too scared to go mountain climbing with Jade, he mocks Deuce for crying during Spectral Soiree (despite how he didn’t see it happen), laughs at his proposal during the Phantom Bride event and makes fun of him for struggling with math.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Deuce tells him about an award he has won for his performance at a track meet Ace responds, “Try not to get so flustered that you embarrass yourself.”

Ace Info Compilation part 13: Phantom Bride(pt1)
The Phantom Bride event begins with Ace laughing at the idea of Idia being a “perfect prince,” only to be harassed by Crowley about the impending public relations fallout until he agrees to help.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ace provides a sample of the proposal he intends to make to a ghost guard who says, “I could sense how much you want to make your partner happy. What a genuine display.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riddle also compliments Ace on his proposal, saying, “That was absolutely from the heart."
The guard tells Riddle he is too short to be allowed to see Eliza and Ace tries to talk him down (“He doesn’t appreciate what a swell guy you are” Talk about a rube, am I right? Ha ha ha…”) to no avail.
In a line that was rewritten in the EN adaptation Riddle claims that he still has a whole year to grow and Ace points out, “Sounds like you looked up that factoid yourself.”

Ace’s group loses its members one by one to Eliza’s guard ghosts until Ace, alone, reaches the wedding venue and saves Idia, just in time.
Ace explains to Eliza that “No partner’s gonna meet your every ideal! That’s just common sense,” and goes after her grandparents for enabling her misunderstanding.
In reference to Riddle’s overblot Ace explains, “You might feel sorry for her, but treating the princess with kid gloves isn’t doing her any favors! Looks to me like you’re a buncha enablers who’d rather take the easy way out than have a tough conversation!”
Trey comments, “Feels like being called out all over again.”
When Eliza asks what she should do Ace asks, “How about someone you can laugh and cry with? Someone who’ll stick with you through all the hard times?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He then follows up with her grandparents again, asking how they could have never taught her something so basic after spending 500 years with her and “you haven’t done anything that actually benefits her!”
Idia marvels at Ace’s ability to give the monologue with a straight face and Riddle appears and says, “Ace is right.”
Just as Ace is about to send Eliza back to the afterlife she decides she is in love with the guard who fights the students back to protect her, leaving Ace to wonder at how the situation managed to shuffle around to the point that they have become the bad guys.
