Tobias likes comfortable clothes and has a high preference for oversized sweaters and shirts. He also likes wearing flannel shirts or soft warm jackets <3 He likes somewhat neutral, earthly tones, but isn't afraid to use funny patterns either :)

Firestorm - Siamés: Toby's a guy who easily goes to do something he really wants, especially when highly motivated, and has accepted the fact that this road can and will have lots of "falls" and problems for him. He's still going forward :) idk man this whole song just reminds me of him <3 also, these lyrics: "to be in the glory, you'll have to survive to your falls"

Black Mambo - Glass Animals: I think going against the higher-ups is a big part of Toby's story and personality tbh. This man has many opinions and he is not afraid to say them. Or blow a whistle or two. Also can be seen as the whole "some guy goes against the Halcyon Board" song.

So Much Love - Depeche Mode: I remember this one uquiz calling Toby sooooo much. This guy has so much love to give and does that all the time, he wants people to feel good, feel loved. Something something, also Dave Gahan saying this about the song: "It's like we have so much love here, we really do, but we're afraid to use it and access it." Based on what we know abt tow universe, I doubt it's better there, so showing vulnerability or doing something nice might indeed look "weird"/"unusual"/"not productive" and thus may even be looked down upon?? idk man.

Dying to Live - Poets of the Fall: honestly no matter what i said above?? toby doesn't like showing his true self to other people and gets, well, ashamed? scared? when forced to talk about himself or explain why he did something and all. He also tends to overthink everything so much :/ Which then has kinda lead to also kinda missing out on many things in fear sjfkkfkgnfkfn

Shine - Dave Gahan & Soulsavers: honestly just toby vibed song. also somehow relates to toby's optimism <3

BONUS SONG which is strongly related to young long hair Toby

Fear of a Blank Planet - Porcupine Tree: i was listening to songs that were in control at some point and idk why but the moment this was on i suddenly got?? so many long hair toby thoughts??? very fitting for him honestly. Obviously only some parts of the lyrics are fitting (which seems to be the case for most songs) but um. yeah. thank my obsession with control soundtrack for accidentally creating long hair toby. After leaving the family he kinda got into this very...unhealthy kind of behavior in which he basically either spent his time working A Lot (or doing some side gigs bc no matter how smart you are i doubt a junior chemist's salary in udl would let you pay for your rent and necessities properly) or spent in clubs or sitting all alone at his apartment doing something or having sex. Additionally I'd mention how his substance use got v high, specifically smoking and drugs. I'm pretty sure corporations actually encouraged their workers to use them to get better productivity and all even on Earth, and while Toby didn't really care abt the whole 'be profuctive' thing, boy did he enjoy getting rid of feelings and having more focus.

Love Theme from House of Leaves

So.

POE.

Like I said, I don't usually explain the Bad Descriptions from my Bad Description Song Polls. Some of them I work hard on, some of them are just bad puns on the song lyrics or titles or whatever, but ultimately, the bad descriptions aren't really the point. The point is to get a couple people curious about artists they might not have heard before by erasing any preconceptions they might have about the artist, the genre, whatever. It's a goofy little game about my very serious love of music and my genuine desire to get people to experience the joys of just trying something new.

But then there's POE. Right? Specifically, there is Haunted by POE, an album that just straight up every time turns me into a four-hour video by an obsessed YouTuber down a really deep rabbit hole. Which is absolutely fitting, because as it turns out, Haunted comes from the same place as Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves.

You see, POE's real name is Anne Danielewski. Mark is her brother. And, regardless of the protests of the dudes on the MZD forums back in 2004, HoL and Haunted come from the same place -- the death of their father, Tad Danielewski, and their subsequent attempts to reconcile their complicated emotions about their perfectionist father, their estranged mother, and their shared and separate childhoods. The works contrast and complement -- House of Leaves is a labyrinth for the reader to wander; Haunted is a cache of tapes from a lost loved one that both sheds light on the past and casts preconceived notions into doubt. They reference each other (the "Poe T" in HoL, the "growling voice" in "Hey Pretty"), but don't require each other.

Even their creation is tangled. She read his book as he was writing it; he listened to her songs as she recorded them. He read a passage of his book over top of the album's first single when she was told radio was "just not playing women;" she took him on tour with her when she was opening for Depeche Mode. It was from the start a kind of double act.

And then it just wasn't anymore.

If there's a villain in this story, it is -- in a weird twist of foreshadowing -- WarnerMedia. Specifically, it is the disastrous AOL -- Time Warner merger, which saw POE unceremoniously dropped from Time Warner subsidiary Atlantic Records just six weeks after she'd signed a contract with them for three more albums. Copies of second single "Wild" were never sent to radio. Support for the album dried up. The ensuing legal wrangling saw POE's masters sold and resold from one label to another, while POE wound up unable to tour or record under her own pseudonym for years. So while House of Leaves went on to (deserved) classic status, Haunted disappeared.

I am not alone in finding this terrifically unjust. Mark Z. Danielewski himself calls the album "woefully underappreciated." Granted, he's biased, but so am I. I was a POE fan before House of Leaves was published. I discovered HoL through Haunted, although both came in close succession. For me, part of the mystery of the book is how it tangles with the album, how two people can go through the same maze and come out of it in such different locations, the same story told in different languages. But also...

I mean, it's just a hell of an album. Her voice is extraordinary. Her lyrics blend the metaphoric and the extremely literal in terrific ways. The mix of electronica, hip-hop, pop, and experimental is absolutely wired to my tastebuds (there's a reason she wound up invited on tour with the Depeche Mode, after all), and the overall work is plaintive, empowering, heartbreaking, and occasionally terrifying. It's so good. It's so, so good. I would almost be okay if this were her last ever album, it's that good.

I just wish more people were listening to it, you know?

So consider this my call to arms. If you are a House of Leaves fan, or even if you're not, even if the footnotes left you cold, give Haunted a listen. Just a couple songs. Just a taste.

i'm guessing by phrasing that you sent me one before this but i do not see it 🤔 ... thank you tumblr, absolute disaster hellsite that you are.

anyway! for hoffstrahm i kinda have to be typical and say that hatef--k by the bravery is probably my favorite song for them. it's on like... everybody's playlist but we're all so correct for this because it FITS. kiss me you animal by burn the ballroom also very much makes me think about them. stripped by depeche mode and lullaby by the cure also make think of them. perhaps not so much lyrics but so much as the Vibe of them you know? esp lullaby, it's one of my fave songs to apply to ships that have the kind of dynamic that they do. desire by meg myers also a very good one for them imo. i'd also include stalker's tango by autoheart and prey for me by korn.

as for spiralshipping, honestly i think you can apply so many of the classic Stalker (tm) songs to them lmao, esp every breath you take by the police. it's a bit cheesy and overdone but it's still accurate. anything that really nails down the adoration and obsession that schenk has with zeke yk? also obligatory mention for gerard way and ray toro's cover of happy together (have thought about making an edit of this personally... whenever i get the time to do so). bits of pieces of tonight by amira elfeky also make me think of them. personal jesus by depeche mode also gives me their vibes. perhaps it only makes sense to me... but i do think of them when i hear that song. oh and i would do anything for you by foster the people, which, if you twist it just the right way.... works well imo.

We absolutely should get to spend more time being incredibly normal with head canons over the latest hot take or whatever. Your wish is my command: Do you have head canons for interactions between Lestat and Daniel either at Auvergne or Trinity Gate, cause I firmly believe there was a period where they were bros comparing notes on Armand, to Armand's eternal chagrin XD

Also, a more writing related question: Do you write to songs / with song lyrics in mind and, if you do, do you have suggestions of artists/songs outside of the incredible Depeche Mode?

I just see them as the best of bros, honestly. Lestat is an agent of chaos, Daniel is down to do anything exciting. If Louis and Armand were in a 'stay in with a book' kind of mood the two of them could hit the town and find some kind of trouble to get into. Also I know fandom sees Daniel as being great with tech but he's technically a boomer, and I think once you get past the iphone 6 he'd be of the 'what's the point of coming out with new versions, they do the same shit in a more confusing way' opinion and he and Lestat could sit around and bitch about newfangled tech stuff together.

But to the point- big yes about them talking about Armand. Especially if Lestat finally cracked and moaned to Daniel about how he keeps trying to start something with Armand but every time things go awry, they end up in a fight, and now Lestat feels hopeless about ever going from the limbo that they're in to becoming proper lovers.

Daniel's advice? "Have you ever tried just....being normal and asking him on a date?"

And no. No, Lestat has not.

(He immediately goes and does just that. Miraculously, it works. And now Lestat owes Daniel a major solid for giving him the same advice that Louis has given him all along but he's blown off because "ugh, Louis, how do you know anything about matters of the heart". Meanwhile Louis has had a longer romantic relationship with Armand than Lestat ever has so like...go figure lol)

[also also one night Lestat and Daniel go out and drink some drunk's blood and, wasted again for the first time in decades, Daniel lays one on him because look, he was a hot rockstar, and mortal Daniel had some rock n roll fantasies he never got to live out okay? Lestat is very flattered and totally lords this over Armand every chance he gets.]

To your point about song lyrics: I write first, and then when I'm driving and something strikes me I pick the lyric title. Very rarely have I ever had a song feel like a great theme before I had the story itself in mind.

The Last Shadow Puppets - Dracula Teeth (obviously!)

I wonder if the rival managers feel similarly when they talk to Unai after a match. If their skin starts to creep, if Unai's skin just seems to radiate cold.

Arctic Monkeys - Dangerous Animals

I love to imagine Unai's POV, it's him being "pinned down by the dark" - by the dark(ness) of his own nature as a vampire. I imagine him STRUGGLING. Also, these lyrics MY GOD:

you should have racing stripes the way you keep me in pursuit / sharpen the heel of your boot / and you press it to my chest and you make me wheeze/ then to my knees you do promote me

I love to picture this in Unai's relationships with the...unattainable/unreachable/dominant partners - with football, with Granit, with Mikel. And I love to imagine vampire!Unai doing the same - of course, he could be the one dominant, of course he could use his supernatural powers - but he won't, he'll suppress them, even at the expense of him being so submissive (he actually likes it. i am fairly convinced he is a masochist).

But tbh then I have a couple of Unai songs that are not directly in the vampire!lore, they're just about the desperate and unfulfilled longing that I always connect with him, no matter if he's in a vampire version or not lol. So, I'll take this as an opportunity to ramble a little:

Kino - Elektrichka (Электричка)

The Unai in Russia song, lmao. I think a lot of the 1980s depressive songs would work for Unai in 2012 Moscow. He just feels lost, without a direction, without anything positive. The elektrichka (tram) is taking him somewhere he doesn't want to and yet he can't shout, can't scream. The claustrophobic feeling of being trapped in a place where there's no dignified way of getting out (and even the alphabet laughs at him in Russia!)

Mikel Laboa - Txoria txori

Oh, the anthem of unrequited feelings and the choice of letting someone you love go. If I had cut off his wings, he would have stayed, he wouldn't have left, but then he would have no longer been a bird.

I love the Anne Etchegoyen version as well, but this one with the church-like chorus sounds even sadder.

Take Aim - Kasabian

(okay so I interpret this as a kill your darlings scenario lmao. take aim? gotta get us out of here? there's no other way for us to get out of this? i bid you farewell? tears on my shovel? hmmmmmm. idk I just love the desperation).

Duncan Dhu - En algún lugar

This is canonically what Unai listens/listened to in his youth. Very melancholic, very underlyingly sad. I like imagining Unai as an edgy teen/young adult, in a long coat or leather jacket, walking somewhere by the sea shore, wind blowing in his hair unspoiled by hair gel, looking very much like an ancient vampire, but also like a Depeche Mode fan...

Desire - Under your spell

Ah, the Arsenal advert song. I love the song, and I love the advert (if you haven't seen it, check it out). So good, so disturbing, so ambient - this is the song of obsession. I'd say it's Unai's obsession with the club even after he was sacked (he did, IRL, say that he kept dreaming of Arsenal for some time after the sack, so do with that information what you will). But it's also his obsession with Mikel. Or with Football, obviously.

Do you have any recommendations for punk bands or music? I need new music.

I was literally obsessed with Lordi while growing up because we won Eurovision with him and some folk metal bands right now like The Hu which i think you would like both of those.

What would Mori listen to?

i LOVE The Hu, I've also been into a lot of Otyken and some Heilung lately too cause that folk metal shit is SO good.

As far as punk, I listen to a lot of older stuff (and I would never tell you i have good taste) so I might not be the best with what punk is most relevant right now but here's some bands that are usually on my driving around playlist:

The Bouncing Souls - kinda skatepunk, lots of punk love songs, a lot of feelings of nostalgia and growing up punk. Hopeless Romantic might be their best album.

The Queers - sounds like they recorded their albums in a bathroom, fun and melodic, lots of stupid goofy songs, covers, and some sweet love songs (From Your Boy). See You Later Fuckface is usually a fave of mine.

I'm on a huge Guttermouth kick right now. Fast, fun to run around to. I'm Destroying the World and Pee in the Shower are two of my faves.

Dead Kennedys - Posterchild political punk band, lots of strong anti-cop sentiment, etc. They're heavily distorted, fast, and angry but use a lot of satire in their lyrics. A classic.

The Vandals - Lots of stupid, fun, and fast songs. Great for high energy, classic late 90s punk before it really hit the Pop Punk divergence.

Pennywise - Angry, fast, political. Fuck Authority is something I Scream Sing in the car a lot.

The Toy Dolls - The only britpunk on my list, they SOUND like they've never taken a bath. Fast and silly, Nellie the Elephant has been banned in bars all over the world for causing absolute chaos.

Bad Religion, Anti-Flag, Death, The Misfits, Black Flag, Reverend Horton Heat, MXPX, NOFX, American Steele, and The Descendents are also honorable mentions.

Honestly a real good intro to 90s and earlier punk is a lot of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtracks and the Punk o Rama compilations. Its a good buffet of a lot of punk microgenres so you get a little bit of everything.

Mori particularly is kind of an older crust punk and doesn't discriminate super hard between punk genres. He likes everything from 80s alt (Depeche Mode and The Cure) to most metal genres. As far as punk, he's somewhere on the crust to skatepunk axis but as long as its fast and loud and hates fascist shit he's into it.

last song: “Big Area” by Then Jerico. I’d totally forgotten about them until I recently saw the “Then Jerico Trip Fest” video on YouTube. What a way to be reminded! It promises trips and it delivers trips.

last show: If TV show, Outlast on Netflix – I enjoy survival reality shows and this was a fun binge. If live show, it was Editors on their recent tour, where they were absolutely wonderful.

currently watching: The Last of Us and Married at First Sight Australia to cover a good spectrum of violent emotions!

currently reading: Papillon by Henri Charrière. I’m not far into it but I’m really enjoying it so far. I’m a fairly slow reader, so it’ll probably keep me occupied for the next couple of months.

current obsession: Editors (though I’ve been obsessed with them since 2020 now). They were a band I quite liked hearing but didn’t keep up with beyond a few hits. On an impulse, I thought I’d properly dig into their catalogue and see what they’d been up to, and they became my lockdown obsession. They’re a great post-punky guitar band, electronic band, acoustic band, and live band, and never afraid of potentially alienating fans by trying something different. Their new album and lineup are brilliant and I’m really excited for this next phase in their career. I think being a huge Depeche Mode fan has given me a very high tolerance for the kind of grand moodiness and occasionally goofy lyrics that Editors have always caught flak for – I love that stuff. Plus, Tom Smith falls directly into the demographic of My Kinda Guy (baritone who dances funny). 🖤
