Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, DeForest Kelley guest stars in "88 Bars," episode 7 of the sixth season of 77 Sunset Strip (original air date November 1, 1963). Kelley plays a charming society playboy whose finances are controlled by his spinster sister. He hires a thug to stalk him and tries to frame the sister's boyfriend for it, because he believes if she gets married her husband will convince her to be less generous with his allowance.

This is that weird final season of 77 Sunset Strip where they got new producers who fired the entire supporting cast, tried to retool the show into a gritty noir, and turned Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.'s character from a genial, professorial type into a hardboiled Philip Marlowe wannabe with a bad narration habit.

Other Trek connections: Grace Lee Whitney has a short scene as a tough-talking exotic dancer.

Mas series vintages y para esta entrega una que arranco hacia finales de la década del 50.Esta es una serie que sirvió de modelo para otras que vendría décadas más adelante y claro seguimos en la temática de investigadores privados y/o policiales.En este caso se trata de dos detectives privados que previamente habían sido agentes secretos del gobierno y que tienen su oficina en la calle que da nombre a la serie: 𝟳𝟳 𝗦𝗨𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗣 (𝟭𝟵𝟱𝟴) Se desarrolló durante 6 temporadas entre los a los 1958 y 1964 y entrego un total de 206 capítulos, que concluían en cada entrega.Cabe aclarar que todos los capítulos fueron en blanco y negro, aunque algunos otros programas para esos años ya empezaban la transición hacia el color.

Hace tantos años atrás, esta serie como decía sirvió de modelo a otras que vendrían posteriormente no mucho tiempo después como los fueron 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘁 (𝟭𝟵𝟱𝟵/𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟬), 𝗛𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗶𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲 (𝟭𝟵𝟱𝟵/𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟯) 𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝟲 ((𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟬/𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟮).Estos programas tenían en común los mismos temas, investigaciones y crímenes y estaban ubicados en lugares algo exóticos para el desarrollo de historias que conmuevan. Se filmaban en lugares como 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗢𝗿𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀, 𝗠𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗶 𝘆 𝗛𝗮𝘄𝗮́𝗶 y la serie que comento en la ciudad de 𝗟𝗼𝘀 𝗔́𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀, en una zona lujosa llamada justamente Sunset Strip.Para colmo todas eran de una misma cadena televisiva, por lo que había abundancia.

Comente unas líneas más arriba lugares exóticos de filmación, pero si hoy día uno observa las series siglo XXI, como ser 𝗖𝗦𝗜 (𝗟𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘀, 𝗠𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗶), 𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗦 (𝗛𝗮𝘄𝗮́𝗶 𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗢𝗿𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀), 𝗠𝗔𝗚𝗡𝗨𝗠 (𝗹𝗮 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘆 𝗹𝗮 𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘃𝗮) 𝗼 𝗛𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗜 𝟱-𝟬 (𝗹𝗮 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘆 𝗹𝗮 𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘃𝗮) se han filmado o se siguen filmando en esos lugares, ya no tan exóticos.

Nuestros dos investigadores principales eran Stuart Bailey (����𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗠 𝗭𝗜𝗠𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗝𝗿.) y 𝗝𝗲𝗳𝗳 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 (𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗠𝗜𝗧𝗛).Quienes eran socios. Además, contaban con el apoyo necesario de 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗲 (𝗟𝗢𝗨𝗜𝗦 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗡𝗡) quien aportaba cierta parte humorística y además contaban con la colaboración del guapo y atildado y con un peinado a lo Elvis antes de ser el Elvis que todo conocemos, de nombre 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗱 𝗞𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗜𝗜, llamado nomas 𝗞𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗲 (𝗘𝗗𝗗 𝗕𝗬𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗦).

Este último se fue afianzando dentro del show hasta alcanzar el grado de socio de los antes mencionados, incluso con una oficina propia y más tarde con un look más adulto.Pero para la sexta y última temporada no hubo ninguna aparición suya debido a que pidió más dinero (dado que ya era muy importante en las tramas) y olímpicamente le dijeron no.Inclusive era uno de los preferidos del público.

La agencia de detectives era para clientes de mucho poder adquisitivo y de lujo, dado la zona donde estaba ubicada (Boulevard Sunset Strip).La premisa era y hablando del público, atraer a los jóvenes como parte importante de la audiencia dado que estos se habían volcado de manera masiva a este nuevo medio de comunicación como lo era la TV. Época en donde las primeras series estaban orientadas hacia el 𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗪𝗘𝗦𝗧 y empezaban a delinearse las primeras 𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗖𝗢𝗠 (comedia de situación, muy habituales ahora).El tema era que no hubiera solo tiempo para lo dramático, sino también para la comicidad y que además uno de los protagonistas fuera un icono del estilo joven de la época (𝗞𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗲).Todo esto fue una bomba mediática.

La serie a diferencia de algunas de la época tenía excelentes guiones y un 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗷𝗲 excelente, 𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘇𝗼𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝘂𝗻 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗼𝗻.La serie también fue pionera en dos capítulos que se repetirían en situaciones similares en años posteriores, en donde por ejemplo en un capítulo no se dijo una sola palabra y otro capítulo donde uno de los detectives llega a una ciudad fantasma y no se cruza con nadie y tampoco pronuncia una palabra.Esto sorprendió al público, que lo acepto favorablemente.

Y hablando un poco de los actores, 𝗘𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗠 𝗭𝗜𝗠𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗝𝗿. (hijo de un afamado violinista judío-ruso) tuvo una dilatada carrera tanto en cine como en TV, tanto antes como después de su papel de 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆.Aunque sus papeles siempre fueron de reparto.Finalizada esta serie tuvo un papel preponderante en otra serie, 𝗙𝗕𝗜 (𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟱/𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟰).Inclusive el FBI le dio una placa como “agente honorario”.Su hija 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲 𝗭𝗶𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 siguió sus pasos y protagonizo una serie pionera que fue la primera de pareja de detectives mujer/hombre, 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗧𝗢𝗡 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗘𝗟𝗘 (𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟮), junto a 𝗣𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗻.

Otro de los protagonistas fue licenciado de la marina de USA y me refiero a 𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗠𝗜𝗧𝗛, por casualidad conoció al gran actor 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘆.Este le animo a seguir filmando en Hollywood y finalmente participo en una media docena de películas.Sin embargo un coagulo de sangre impidió que terminara de filmar la serie que comento, aunque igualmente siguió filmando películas hasta su retiro en 1980.

𝗘𝗗𝗗 𝗕𝗬𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗦 (𝗞𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗲), luego de la serie se animó a filmar unos Westerns, pero lo peor que le pudo pasar es quedar encasillado en el personaje con los rasgos de “𝗸𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗲” y el público siempre esperaba que se vistiera y peinara como él.Tal es así que tuvo que ganarse la vida filmando en Europa.

Participaron también de esta serie en menor medida 𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗗 𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗚 (visto luego en el gran éxito 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘 𝗗𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗦), 𝗥𝗢𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗧 𝗟𝗢𝗚𝗔𝗡 y 𝗝𝗔𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗥, que había nacido en Francia y fue Miss Francia, recordada por ser la telefonista (y a veces agente) durante 5 años de esta serie y que interpretaba al personaje 𝗦𝘂𝘇𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘆 a quien apodaban 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵𝘆.

La serie concluyó de una manera bastante abrupta dado que los productores despidieron a todos los protagonistas menos a 𝗘𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗠 𝗭𝗜𝗠𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗝𝗿., quien abordó solo la última temporada.La decepción de la audiencia fue total y la serie cancelada al finalizar la sexta temporada.A diferencias de otras series inclusive posteriores, 𝟳𝟳 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽 sigue siendo muy actual, tanto por la temática como por el lenguaje utilizado.Aportó estilo, modelos de comportamiento, humor e innovación televisiva.Existe un antes y un después de algunas series, esta es una de ellas.Su música pegadiza también fue uno de los factores de su éxito.Mi puntaje para este gran show que ya tiene mas de 60 años de antigüedad, es de 8/10.

The limitations and pitfalls of Steve Allen's "rules of comedy". Rule: the hard 'K sound is inherently funny. So, innocuous enough, in devising a sketch he lands on naming someone "Erik". And it is why the 77 Sunset Strip song is " Cookie Cookie, Lend Me Your Comb". And though not likely written out in the last third of the nineteenth century, this is why that group of Confederate veterans named their fraternal order shortly turned terrorist organization a cluster of kooky k words and derivations thereof in the first place.

Yeah, Jughead does not want to win this one.
