CTJL 2021: FINALE, PART I
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
2021! I have become aware that it is now 2023, yes, thank you. I promise I am sufficiently ashamed of myself. But not a lot happens in my game these days, which means big things need to be celebrated bigger than usual... which, if you’re me, means you end up confusing your ambitions with your capabilities and end up squashed and discouraged beneath the weight of all the visions you couldn’t achieve, with several painful WIPs relegated to your blackest, backest project folders to show for it.
Fun!
Story-related stuff below the cut, if you’re into that.
Despite missing the opening show in Rio de Janeiro, the little Lowmax team managed to end the 2021 season with two riders on the podium! (Nobody was as shocked as I was) Archie & Speakeasy were awarded champion of the 1.30m class and second place overall, while Agatha & Poquelin won the 1.50m class and were hot on their heels in third place overall. Considering they were pipped by Elizabeth Howell, the face of the tour and arguably, the current face of show jumping itself, being the first losers wasn’t too tough!       Archie (who was almost as tall as Liz while she stood atop the towering first place position, much to the amusement of the press) was ever the professional- and frankly, ever himself- graciously shaking Liz’ hand and offering sincere congratulations, as well as the promise of a celebratory drink at the gala later on. Anyone who can manage to perform so well so consistently is deserving of as much in his book, but the fact Elizabeth (because you know he’s calling her ‘Elizabeth’ and not ‘Liz’) is managing it while still so young is rather impressive. As for Agatha...
There would be those who’d say she was jealous. But there are those who say a lot of things about Agatha. (”She looks like a hair yanker.”) (”Speaking to her is like a near-death experience.”) (”She’d eat him alive.”) (”I’d never want to meet her.”) (”Officially terrifying.”) (”Her favourite food is probably crisp charcoal.”) (...) In truth, yes: being beaten by someone younger than her wasn’t exactly thrilling, and being beaten by Archie again was adding insult to injury (even if it had privately been expected) But Agatha’s comparatively subdued demeanour had little to do with envy, and everything to do with her self-expectations. Self-expectations, and a hollow sort of feeling where there should have been excitement.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Big thanks to @calveroterranorasj for collaborating with me, and for allowing me to participate in the CTJL in the first place! I genuinely had a blast travelling the globe with the team and rubbing shoulders with the different characters out in the world.
Fun bit of trivia for you: all those things ‘said’ about Agatha are all real things said at some point by my so-called friends. I’d be offended if I didn’t find them so amusing. The charcoal one in particular- courtesy of @kullabergs, who has a unique talent for insulting Agatha- has a permanent place in my head. Makes me smile every time. Ridiculous. I can’t even be mad about it.
Finally, I’m just going to say before anyone else asks: contrary to popular belief (the popular belief being that held by 3 out of the 4 people who’ve seen these photographs) Archie is not, in fact, proposing marriage to the 2021 CTJL Champion, Elizabeth Howell.
IT’S A GENTEEL HANDSHAKE, GUYS.
Honestly. 🙄

Happy Birthday Christopher Brookmyre, born in Glasgow, September 6th 1968.
Brookmyre was raised and schooled in Barrhead, attending St. Mark’s Primary School and St. Luke’s High School, before attending the University of Glasgow. He has worked for the film magazine Screen International, and as sub-editor for The Scotsman and the Edinburgh Evening News.
Christopher is the author of eighteen published novels to-date, the latest being Dead Girl Walking.
In 2006 Christopher won the seventh Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction with All Fun and Games Until Someone Loses An Eye and, as is tradition, a Gloucestershire Old Spot pig was named after the winning novel. On accepting the award, Christopher said:
“My favourite PG Wodehouse quote is ‘It is seldom difficult to distinguish between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine’; today I’d like to think that I resemble the ray of sunshine.”
His first novel, Quite Ugly One Morning was the winner of the Critics’ First Blood Award for Best First Crime Novel of the Year in 1996. The book was made into a TV drama where James Nesbit was in my opinion miscast as the lead character Jack Parlabane, Brookmyre himself wanted Douge Henshall, who of course went on to star in Shetland.
The short story “Bampot Central” was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association Macallan Short Story Dagger in 1997.
Boiling a Frog won the Sherlock Award for Best Comic Detective Novel in 2000 and Christopher became the only writer to win two Sherlocks when Be My Enemy picked up the 2004 prize. In 2007, Christopher was given the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award for Writing.
Christopher has been shortlisted three times for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award: in 2007 for All Fun And Games Until Somebody Loses An Eye, in 2008 for A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil and in 2012 for Where The Bodies Are Buried.
In 2005 Christopher was named Young Alumus of the Year by the University of Glasgow. He has subsequently been awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Glasgow and by Edinburgh Napier University.
In 2013 Brookmyre announced, at The Edinburgh Book Festival that his novel All Fun and Games until Somebody Loses an Eye was to be made into a film, but unfortunately it looks as if nothing came of this.
Chris has many fans, one of the most famous must be the author Stephen King who opened last year’s Bloody Scotland crime writing festival brandishing a copy of Brookmyre’s Want You Gone and declaring it: “Fantastic!”
In 2018, Brookmyre wrote The Way of All Flesh with his wife, Dr. Marisa Haetzman. It was published under the pseudonym Ambrose Parry] In 2020, the team followed up with The Art of Dying, and in 2021, A Corruption of Blood.
The Cliff House was released inMay 2023, the book is his 27th in 25 years, the author says  “It was a product of the pandemic, of time spent thinking about the people you haven’t seen.”
As well as writitng, Chris is a member of an unlikely musical super-group! The Fun Lovin' Crime Writers also features Val McDermid (vocals),, Mark Billingham (guitar/vocals), Luca Veste (bass), Doug Johnstone (drums/vocals), and Stuart Neville (guitar/vocals) have sold over 20 million books worldwide and won every major crime-writing award.
The supergroup will be taking to the stage om September 8th at the Palace Theatre in Paignton to raise the curtain on the 2023 Agatha Christie Festival, oh andyes, one of the songs the perform is Elvis Costello's Watching the Detecives.

Richard Armitage acquires film and TV rights to Ellis’ Jackman and Evans series and will play lead
Richard Armitage’s White Boar Films and Sprout Pictures have acquired the film and TV rights to Joy Ellis’ Jackman and Evans crime series, with Armitage to play the lead character in a television adaptation “based on the novels” and entitled “The Fens”.
Rebecca Watson at Valerie Hoskins Associates negotiated the deal on behalf of Lorella Belli at the Lorella Belli Literary Agency representing Joffe Books, the English language publisher. The television adaptation is being developed in association with international distributor Eccho Rights.
Written by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Tim Dynevor, it will star Richard Armitage as Rowan Jackman. Based on Joy’s novels, “The Fens” will be “an unsettling, atmospheric returning crime thriller set in the remote, hauntingly cinematic landscape of the Fenlands.”
The show’s synopsis continues: “With its numerous unexplained events – vanishings, murders, black fog clouds drifting across the marshes, strange lights that invariably precede an imminent death, and sounds apparently emanating from nowhere – even in the 21st century the isolated Fenlands retain an unshakeable reputation for superstition and secrecy. Some are born evil. Some are raised evil. Some choose evil. Welcome to the Fens. A world that will literally take your breath away.”
According to Lorella Belli Literary Agency, Joy Ellis has sold more than 3.4 million copies of her novels in English. Her latest novel is Solace House, the ninth book in the Jackman and Evans series. Book seven, The Patient Man, was shortlisted for Best Crime Thriller at the British Book Awards 2021.
Armitage commented: “I met Joy on the pages of Their Lost Daughters, her second novel. Then we met in person and I told her one day we would make a TV show of her stories and it became a labour of love. I believe Joy Ellis is the closest thing we have to a contemporary Agatha Christie.
“Through a collaboration with Gina Carter at Sprout, Adam Barth at Eccho Rights and the brilliant mind of Tim Dynevor, I believe we have built a family that will propel the Jackman and Evans stories from the page to the screen, over multiple seasons. That would be my greatest joy.”
Ellis said: “I am absolutely delighted that Sprout Pictures and Richard Armitage’s White Boar Films are going to take my Jackman and Evans series to our television screens. It’s a dream come true. The icing on the cake is that Richard will play Jackman – he will be perfect. Since hearing his incredible performances with Audible, I now see and hear him in my mind when I write new Jackman books!”

An Unholy Death—A Novella: A Food Lovers’ Village Mystery by Leslie Budewitz #Review
Tumblr media
This has been one of my favorite series but somehow I missed the collection of short stories, Carried to the Grave, which includes An Unholy Death.

An Unholy Death—A Novella: A Food Lovers’ Village Mystery Historical Cozy Mystery Prequel - Food Lovers’ Village Mysteries Setting - Montana Beyond the Page Publishing (August 29, 2023) Paperback ‏ : ‎ 104 pages ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1960511262 ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1960511263 Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0CF6474VX

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Food Lovers’ Village Mysteries, we’re bringing out stand-alone editions of readers’ favorites from Carried to the Grave and Other Stories. Our first selection is the novella An Unholy Death, a historical prequel to the Agatha Award-winning series opener, Death al Dente. It’s 1910 and newly married Kate Murphy arrives in Jewel Bay, Montana, with her husband Paddy, proprietor of Murphy’s Mercantile, intent on building their life together in this unfamiliar place. The conditions are rough—as are some of their clientele—and get even rougher when Kate discovers the dead body of the widowed local preacher. She’s determined to keep his young daughter safe, but the task takes all the courage Kate can summon as she faces the first of many mysteries unfolding in her new home . . . Dollycas's Thoughts In the first book in the Food Lovers' Village Mystery Series, Death Al Dente, we learn Erin Murphy takes over her family’s century-old general store and turns it into a boutique market filled with local delicacies. In this book, An Unholy Death, author Leslie Budewitz takes us back in time to Murphy’s Mercantile when Erin's ancestors, Kate and Paddy, were just starting to build their lives in Jewel Bay. Kate is stunned when she finds the body of a local preacher. He had been raising his daughter alone after his wife's death and now she is alone. Kate takes her under her wing while she and others try to find out who killed the preacher and why. I really enjoyed this novella. I love getting the backstory for a series and learning the beginning of life in Jewel Bay, Montana was very interesting.  Ms. Budewitz's descriptive storytelling really brought the place to life. Kate Murphy has come to join her husband Paddy from my home state of Wisconsin so I loved all of her references to home and how different it is from there to Montana and the frontier town of Jewel Bay. Katie helps at the mercantile but she also gives piano lessons. This helps her get to know her new neighbors and make some friends. Grace, the daughter of the local pastor, is one of Kate's students. After the girl loses her father you see how kind-hearted and caring Kate is. She is a strong woman and with the need to get to the truth. Even in a book of just over 100 pages, we get to know both Kate and Grace very well and care about their future. That is a true credit to the author. The mystery unfolds very quickly. There are several theories and secrets that need to be revealed to gain focus on who killed the pastor. I was totally caught off guard when the mystery was solved. In An Unholy Death, Ms. Budewitz gives her readers a look at a difficult time in Jewel Bay. It appears that Murphy's held on through the years passing the family business along and now to Erin in the current time. I can't believe this was the only mystery Kate Murphy was part of and solved. This novella may just be a one-time thing, but I sure wouldn't mind visiting Kate in her Jewel Bay again.

Jane Birkin, actor and singer, dies aged 76.
The Anglo-French singer and actor Jane Birkin has died at the age of 76, the French culture ministry has announced.
The singer had been forced to postpone several concerts in Paris scheduled for May after breaking her shoulder in March 2022. This followed another string of cancelled shows after Birkin had a stroke in September 2021.
“I’ve always been a big optimist, and I realise that it still takes me a little while to be able to be on stage again and with you. I love being with you so much,” she said in a statement at the time.
She was found dead at her home in Paris, French media reported.
Birkin was born in London on 14 December 1946 to an actor mother and naval officer father. At 17, she married the James Bond composer John Barry but the marriage lasted only three years. She catapulted to fame after starring in the 1966 film Blow-Up – which featured a scene in which Birkin appeared nude before crossing the channel in 1968 at the age of 22 to star in a satirical romantic comedy Slogan alongside the pop-poet Serge Gainsbourg, who was 18 years her senior.
It was the start of a 13-year on- and off-screen relationship that made them France’s most famous couple, in the spotlight as much for their bohemian and hedonistic lifestyle as for their work.
Despite being banned on radio in several countries and condemned by the Vatican because of its overtly sexual lyrics, their 1968 song Je t’aime … moi non plus (“I love you … me neither”) achieved worldwide success and reached No 1 in the UK singles chart.
Their relationship has been frequently described as “tumultuous”, and Birkin reportedly wrote in her 2020 diaries that there had been violence between the couple. During one of their rows, Birkin launched herself into the River Seine after throwing a custard pie in Gainsbourg’s face.
But she frequently defended the man with whom she became so closely associated, including against charges by one singer that he was a “harasser”, in an interview in the Times in 2020.
“He and I became the most famous of couples in that strange way because of Je t’aime and … he went on being my friend until the day he died. Who could ask for more?” Birkin told CNN in 2006. “So Paris became my home. I’ve been adopted here. They like my accent,” she said.
The couple were together for 12 years but never married, and in 1971 had a daughter, Charlotte, who is an award-winning actor and singer.
They split in 1980 and Birkin branched out from more ditsy film roles to arthouse productions, gaining three nominations at the Césars – France’s Oscars – starting with La Pirate in 1985.
In her about 70 films she has been directed by France’s leading directors, including Bertrand Tavernier, Agnès Varda, Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Resnais and James Ivory.
Some of her most famous acting credits include the 1966 crime comedy Kaleidoscope, a 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and the mystery film Evil Under the Sun in 1982.
Despite their split, she remained forever associated with Gainsbourg, who continued to write songs for her, including Les dessous chic about lingerie being used to try to cover up a relationship on the rocks.
“It’s the most beautiful song about separation you could ever have,” Birkin said in a 2018 interview.
Her first child, Kate Barry, a fashion photographer who worked for Vogue, died in 2013 at the age of 46. Birkin had another daughter, the singer Lou Doillon, from her 13-year relationship with the French director Jacques Doillon.
Beyond cinema, her legacy includes being the name behind the Hermès Birkin handbag, which was launched in 1984. It was reportedly born following a conversation between Birkin and the Hermès chief executive, Jean-Louis Dumas, on a flight from Paris to London, on which they discussed how difficult it was to find a bag that could fulfil Birkin’s needs as a mother-of-two.
She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2001 for her services to acting and British-French cultural relations.
The French culture minister, Roselyne Bachelot, told the French TV station BFM: “This departure is so sad. She was a beautiful person.”

round up // SEPTEMBER 22
Tumblr media
My September was filled with hidden gems, wartime epics, yummy recipes, and lots of processing of the passing of Queen Elizabeth. Keep reading to fill your October with new discoveries, inspiring stories, delicious dinners, and insight into where culture is going.
September Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
1. Gilmore Girls: The Official Cookbook by Elena P. Craig and Kristen Mulrooney (2022)
Kyla and I took a break from our regular podcast programming to review this delicious and fun cookbook. Which recipes are easy enough for Lorelai, and which are perfect for those with Sookie’s level of expertise? Which taste like Santa Burgers and which taste like Sookie’s incredible peach sauce? (Spoiler alert: They’re all pretty yummy!) Listen to the full review of the book in ep. 128 of SO IT’S A SHOW.
Tumblr media
2. The Woman King (2022)
Another version of this film could have been a capital-G Great Awards Season Contender, but the smartest thing about The Woman King is it taps into the thrill audiences felt in Wonder Woman and in Black Panther when female warriors led the charge. Read my full review for ZekeFilm. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
3. Feeling Design Lab: Playlists, art prints, newsletters, and more!
Jenna O’Brien and her Feeling Design Lab add joy to my earbuds, Instagram, inbox, and home decor. If love playlists with moody vibes, art prints built around beautiful color palettes, or newsletters that tap into your nostalgia of growing up on Disney Channel, she will also add joy to your life. I just bought this Harry Styles-inspired print, and I’ve been feeling my feelings with this collection of tunes about growing up:
Tumblr media
4. See How They Run (2022)
Sam Rockwell, Saoirse Ronan, and Harris Dickinson as Richard Attenborough are riffing on Agatha Christie, and what a charming little whodunnit it is! Read my review for ZekeFilm, and check out this Hollywood Reporter article after you’ve seen the movie for comparisons with real life. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
5. The Negotiator (1998)
Samuel L. Jackson negotiates with kidnappers and terrorists for a living—who can save the day when he’s the one taking hostages? When Jackson becomes convinced extreme measures are necessary to root out corruption in his police precinct, it’s Kevin Spacey’s job to talk him down, and F. Gary Gray’s action thriller turns up the excitement to 11. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7/10
September Critic Picks
Tumblr media
1. The Bridges of Madison County (1995)
In ep. 129 of SO IT’S A SHOW?, special guest/Meryl Streep correspondent Maddie Brophy joined me for a chat about the ‘90s romantic drama The Bridges of Madison County. We discuss another instance of Streep and her whole accent thing, movies about cheating, and a Gilmore Girls episode that reminded Maddie of her 14th birthday. What bridges does Rory need to cross with her grandparents, and where does the episode “Friday Night’s Alright for Fighting” rank among Gilmore fans? Grab your umbrellas because Clint Eastwood is staring you down in the rain waiting for an answer! Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
2. On Golden Pond (1981)
I saw a glimpse of my future in the first 20 minutes—my goal is to be Katharine Hepburn shouting at loons in 40 years! Henry Fonda and Hepburn both won Oscars  for this film, but they weren’t just legacy awards. More movies about old people like this, please! You can find this on my Letterboxd list of every film I remember making me cry. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9.5/10
Tumblr media
3. Ballad of a Soldier (1959)
Many war films feel indulgent in tragedy, obsessed with unsettling the audience to the point of provocation. The Russian feature Ballad of a Soldier, however, finds moments of joy and humanity while still acknowledging the injustice that surrounds Alyosha as he heads home on leave to visit his mother during World War II. Also on my Letterboxd list of tear-jerkers! Crowd: 7/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
4. WE ARE by Jon Batiste (2021)
Jon Batiste won an Oscar for his music in Soul, which was my favorite film of 2020. Earlier this year he won Album of the Year at the Grammys, and I’m co-signing this, too. Flash back to your childhood in “BOY HOOD” or get inspired by “FREEDOM”—either way, you’ll be glad you spent time with this album.

6. A New Leaf (1971)
A hidden gem! Henry (Walter Matthau) is broke. The solution? Marry a rich gal fast so she can pay off his debts. But when he sets his sights on the absent-minded professor Henrietta (Elaine May), he gets more than he bargained for. He’s a grouch and she’s one of the biggest schlemiels in cinematic history—what could go wrong? Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
7. Elizabeth Holmes + So Many Thoughts
If the pieces I shared above only whetted your appetite for Royal content, let me introduce you to Elizabeth Holmes. I started following her on Instagram a few months ago per recommendation of a fellow Royals-enthusiast, and her thoughtful coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s passing has made me a new email subscriber. These channels showcase her expertise on European Royal families, including how their fashion choices add to (or confuse) their official messaging, and she’s an insightful writer who also knows how to explain unfamiliar historical context. I never skip her Instagram stories—high praise in 2022!
Tumblr media
8. Five Graves to Cairo (1943)
Another hidden gem! It’s a lesser known WWII espionage thriller set in Northern Africa (at least compared to Casablanca), but you won’t be let down with Billy Wilder writing and directing. Imagine a film this good being one of your forgotten works! Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10

Never too old... Book Review
Tumblr media
A gripping, action-packed cosy crime adventure to keep you hooked. Older women often feel invisible, but sometimes that's their secret weapon. Yes. This just shows what women can do when trained right. And yes, the Fini painting exists of a Shepherdess and Sphinxes.  In Venice. At the Peggy Guggenheim collection. Interesting art work. Just an FYI to the author, Lyme disease is in England, and the diseases carried by rat droppings - especially Weils,  is just as nasty. Always wear gloves when gardening! I enjoyed this book immensely and willl forever be wary of  mud wraps, I used to like them. I think this is an important novel to demonstrate that women of a certain age should not be written off too soon, we may be capable of doing more than you expect! Well plotted, good style and grammar and such an unusual topic. Deanna Raybourn New York Times and USA Today bestselling novelist Deanna Raybourn is a 6th-generation native Texan. She graduated with a double major in English and history from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Married to her college sweetheart and the mother of one, Raybourn makes her home in Virginia. Her novels have been nominated for numerous awards including the Edgar, two RT Reviewers’ Choice awards, the Agatha, two Dilys Winns, and a Last Laugh. She launched a new Victorian mystery series with the 2015 release of A CURIOUS BEGINNING, featuring intrepid butterfly-hunter and amateur sleuth, Veronica Speedwell. Veronica’s second adventure is A PERILOUS UNDERTAKING (January 2017), and book three, A TREACHEROUS CURSE, was published in 2018 and nominated for the Edgar Award. A DANGEROUS COLLABORATION was released in 2019, and A MURDEROUS RELATION appeared in 2020 and AN UNEXPECTED PERIL published in March 2021. The latest Veronica Speedwell adventure, AN IMPOSSIBLE IMPOSTOR, will be published in February, 2022. Deanna’s first contemporary novel featuring four female assassins who must band together to take out their nemesis as they prepare for retirement, KILLERS OF A CERTAIN AGE, will be published in September of 2022. The Alchemist of Riddle and Ruin by Gigi Pandian (An Accidental Alchemist Mystery #6)
When Zoe Faust sees the ghost of a murdered young woman, is it really a spirit—or a flesh and blood woman who stopped aging because she’s a fellow alchemist? Sixteen years ago, high school student Ridley Price discovered a secret she planned to reveal through a party game—but someone killed her first. The baffling crime was never solved. Zoe’s friend Heather has always wondered: which of the seven guests at the party killed Ridley? When the newly-appeared ghost turns dangerous, threatening people they love, Zoe teams up with her gargoyle roommate Dorian to unmask the supposed specter.
Book page: https://www.gigipandian.com/the-alchemist-of-riddle-and-ruin
My Review: I’ve been following the adventure of Zoe and Dorian since the first book and I’m in love with this series since the first book. This preamble to say that I loved all the books in this series but I consider this one the best so far. I was glad to catch up with the characters and the twisty plot kept me hooked and entertaining. I didn’t guess any twist and the solution surprised. It’s also an an excellent New Golden Age mystery. There’s a lot of fun, there’s the paranormal side but there’s a impossible crime and lot of riddle to solve. Gigi Pandian did an excellent job and her works is up to those of well known writer of the Golden Age era. There’s one issue: it says that the next book will be in 2023 and I absolutely need to know what will happen as there could be a great surprise. That said I had fun and read it in one setting so go and read it. Many thanks to Gigi Pandian for this digital copy, all opinions are mine.
The Author: Gigi Pandian is a USA Today bestselling and award-winning mystery author, breast cancer survivor, and accidental almost-vegan. The child of cultural anthropologists from New Mexico and the southern tip of India, she spent her childhood being dragged around the world on their research trips and now lives outside San Francisco with her husband and a gargoyle who watches over the garden. Gigi writes the Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mysteries, the Accidental Alchemist Mysteries, and locked-room mystery short stories. Her debut novel, Artifact, was awarded a Malice Domestic Grant and named a “Best of 2012” Debut Novel by Suspense Magazine, and her fiction has received Agatha, Anthony, Lefty, and Derringer Awards, and been a finalist for the Edgar Award. Along with Kellye Garrett and Walter Mosley, she’s one of the co-founders of Crime Writers of Color.
Gigi’s latest Accidental Alchemist novel, The Alchemist of Fire and Fortune, was published in October, 2021. Her first Secret Staircase mystery, Under Lock & Skeleton Key, was published by Minotaur Books in March 2022, garnering multiple starred reviews and called “wildly entertaining” by the New York Times Book Review.

We Need to Have a Moment of Silence for Wanda Maximoff’s Character Development (A review of WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness)
Jacara Kelly
June 20 2022
After learning of Wanda Maximoff’s importance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, I took it upon myself to binge watch the entire season of WandaVision in one day/evening: this day being a very random Tuesday. And honestly, it was worth every minute of sleep I missed that school night; and I immediately understood why Wanda had such a strong fanbase. I experienced every emotion while watching this insane story unfold, and this ultimately led to my extreme love for Elizabeth Olsen, who makes Wanda Maximoff a really difficult character to hate. So, I guess you could imagine my surprise when she became the villain in the newest edition of the Doctor Strange Franchise.
WandaVision, released in January 2021, tells the love story of Avengers Wanda Maximoff and Vision… well, what could have been their love story, had Vision not been killed in Avengers: Infinity War. Dealing with overwhelming grief, Wanda uses her strong powers for the worst, creating an alternate reality that impacts the lives of once normal civilians. The show stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda, Paul Bettany as Vision, Kathryn Hahn as Agatha, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeu. The execution of this entire season and how perfectly the story unraveled was really amazing to me. This is arguably the best series to be released in Marvel’s phase four, which is rumored to be coming to an end soon. Olsen’s performance as Wanda in this show was amazing. It was captivating, and her talent is one that keeps an audience hooked even while binge watching a nine episode show on a school night.
Another thing that I loved about this series is the way time passed. WandaVision begins as a 1950’s sitcom, and by the end of the season, the show was a Modern Family type sitcom. This is something I’ve never seen done before in a show, and watching the show go through different era’s on television was very entertaining. The show got nominated for 23 Primetime Emmy Awards, and the fact that it only won two of those 23 is something I will never forgive the award show for. I would recommend this show to anybody who asks for it.
Given the way that the limited series ended, I was convinced that Wanda was doing great and put the negative use of her powers away for good. So when it was revealed (very shortly into the movie by the way) that Wanda/the Scarlet Witch would be the villain, along with her reasoning behind being the villain, I was confused to say the least.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars actors Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez. In the movie, the Scarlet Witch is fighting to attain the powers of America Chavez to move through the Multiverse to be with her family that she created in WandaVision. But… in the series finale of WandaVision she seemed to have put those mistakes behind her and realized that they aren’t real. I believe that the cast did a wonderful performance, especially Gomez, who is only 16 years old. She did a great job as this character, and I heard that Anthony Mackie even was her acting coach at one time. I would recommend for people to watch this movie once, but I’ve definitely seen better from Marvel.
A lot of fans (especially  my mother) were disappointed in this movie because they didn’t like the way that Wanda was portrayed as a villain. Personally, Wanda can do no wrong in my eyes, so my views on the character didn’t change at all after watching the movie. Again, this is all thanks to the great Elizabeth Olsen, who amazed Wanda Maximoff fans playing both the hero and a villain and still was able to be a highly adored character.
