Men Just Don't Trust Women -- And It's A Huge Problem (Damon Young, Huffington Post, Mar 16 2015)
"Generally speaking, we (men) do not believe things when they're told to us by women.
Well, women other than our mothers or teachers or any other woman who happens to be an established authority figure.
Do we think women are pathological liars? No.
But, does it generally take longer for us to believe something if a woman tells it to us than it would if a man told us the exact same thing? Definitely!
This conversation is how, after five months of marriage, eight months of being engaged, and another year of whatever the hell we were doing before we got engaged, I realized I don't trust my wife.
When the concept of trust is brought up, it's usually framed in the context of actions; of what we think a person is capable of doing.
If you trust someone, it means you trust them not to cheat. Or steal. Or lie. Or smother you in your sleep.
By this measure, I definitely trust my wife. I trust the shit out of her.
I also trust her opinions about important things. I trusted that she'd make a great wife, and a trust that she'll be a great mother. And I trust that her manicotti won't kill me.
But you know what I don't really trust? What I've never actually trusted with any women I've been with? Her feelings.
If she approaches me pissed about something, my first reaction is "What's wrong?"
My typical second reaction? Before she even gets the opportunity to tell me what's wrong? "She's probably overreacting."
My typical third reaction? After she expresses what's wrong? "Ok. I hear what you're saying, and I'll help. But whatever you're upset about probably really isn't that serious."
I'm both smart and sane, so I don't actually say any of this aloud. But I am often thinking it.
Until she convinces me otherwise, I assume that her emotional reaction to a situation is disproportionate to my opinion of what level of emotional reaction the situation calls for.
Basically, if she's on eight, I assume the situation is really a six.
I'm speaking of my own relationship, but I know I'm not alone. (…)
There's an obvious parallel here with the way (many) men typically regard women's feelings and the way (many) Whites typically regard the feelings of non-Whites.
It seems like every other day I'm reading about a new poll or study showing that (many) Whites don't believe anything Black people say about anything race/racism-related until they see it with their own eyes.
Personal accounts and expressions of feelings are rationalized away; only "facts" that have been carefully vetted and verified by other Whites and certain "acceptable" Blacks are to be believed.
So how do we remedy this? And can it even be remedied? I don't know.
This distrust of women's feelings is so ingrained, so commonplace that I'm not even sure we (men) realize it exists."

Traditionally, the image of a figleaf was used by artists to cover the body parts (think Adam and Eve) that they were not supposed to show in their paintings. As I use the term, a figleaf is a communicative device that provides just a bit of cover for something that one isn’t supposed to show in public – like racism. To see how this works, let’s first take a closer look at Trump’s call for a Muslim ban. Here is a statement, cast in the third person, that he read aloud in December 2015: Donald J Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. The anti-Muslim message is loud and clear, and not hidden at all. But the end of the statement is the bit that I want to focus on: ‘until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on’. For some people, this phrase provided reassurance that Trump isn’t racist – because a real racist would want to ban Muslims period, not just while we figure out what’s going on. This is a figleaf: it provides just enough cover for the racism that isn’t acceptable to show in public. One reason that figleaves like this work is that many white people accept what the sociolinguist Jane Hill called ‘the folk theory of racism’. This view sets a very high bar for what counts as racist: a racist has to consciously believe in the biological inferiority of people of colour, and intend to be racist. Somebody like this would want to ban Muslims forever, not just temporarily. Similarly, they wouldn’t suggest that ‘some’ Mexican immigrants are good people, as Trump did. Nor would they have a Black friend, or declare themself to be non-racist, this line of thinking goes. A view such as this one makes it very easy for utterances to serve as figleaves for racism. These figleaves allow a voter to continue supporting a candidate who has made a comment that might have worried them. They don’t need to become fully convinced that the candidate is non-racist; it’s enough in many cases to be uncertain about whether the utterance indicates racism. When I examined discussions among Trump supporters online, I found people who worried about Trump’s views on Mexicans being reassured by those who pointed out that he also said some of them are good. ‘I didn’t hear him say anything racist against any race,’ one person posted. ‘What I did hear him say is, “Illegal Mexicans bring drugs, crime, and are rapists, but I’m sure some are good people.” Seriously, whats racist about that?’ Another Tweeted: ‘Trump is not racist … Trump is not against all mexicans just the illegals.’ Another classic form of figleaf involves reporting the words of others, either specifically (‘John Smith says…’) or in a vague, handwavy way (‘Lots of people are saying…’) This is a great way to avoid responsibility for what one is inserting into the discourse. We see this technique in the British politician Enoch Powell’s infamous ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech in 1968, in which he described a constituent (a ‘quite ordinary working man’) as saying: ‘In this country in 15 or 20 years’ time the black man will have the whip hand over the white man.’ Reports like these help to normalise the sentiments expressed, while distancing the speaker from them. Figleaves are not for everyone. Some people don’t need them: fully committed racists are happy with blatantly racist comments, no figleaves required. Many people won’t be convinced by them: antiracist activists, for example, will see right through the attempted reassurance. For others, though, they provide just what is needed – a licence to go on supporting the person they feel drawn to.

Reckless. Narcissistic. Absurd.
About fifteen minutes ago, Carlos had been described by those adjectives. Because fifteen minutes ago, unease filled your chest when Carlos' car had been smashed into the barriers. There were fifteen seconds of utter shock, fifteen seconds of quiet wait, and fifteen seconds of grief.
Now you walked in circles in your boyfriend's room, waiting for him to arrive. You were angry but also wanted to touch him, to confirm that he was okay, that Carlos truly didn’t suffer major injuries in the crash.
When the door clicks open, the dark-haired man emerges, icepack in his left hand, pressing it on his right shoulder. A bandage was curled over his right wrist. You felt your head spin.
He’s okay. You can see he’s okay.
“Hey, miss me?” He greets and looking into his eyes you know you’re not the only one drowning in frustration, the anxiety within you is the only differentiator.
Whatever.
“What was that?” you want to scream, but you just say. “What was going through your mind to think going into a non-existing outside was a good idea?”
“Mierda, you can’t be serious. There was space!” He protests, he knows he’s wrong.
Stubborn.
“Yeah, and I’m the Queen of England!” You mock “Really, Carlos, tell me what was going on because that was nonsense”
He laughs, dry and infuriated.
“Nonsense is what it’s coming out of your mouth, mi amor,” He says bitterly, icepack thrown somewhere on the sofa. “I’m here to race, it’s not my fault some of them don’t know how to do it!”
For fuck’s sake.
“Carlos, can you stop?” Your voice trembles, anger building “Just stop being too fucking reckless because it will end you”
“Oh, I’m reckless!” He spits out “Should stop racing, then? Fuck everything because of a superficial crash?”
“That was not a superficial crash Carlos, you know it!” You scream, wanting to cry.
“I feel perfect!”
 “You could have died, you know?!”
“I rather that than not giving enough!” He yells back.
“But you-” Exasperation “You- Fuck!”
Both of you go silent. Your eyes no longer meet, not when you notice the tears falling from the other's eyes. Carlos grabs the icepack and sits down on the couch, hands on his knees, eyes fixated on the floor. You turn around, hands on your face, trying your best to sweep away the tears.
You could feel the anger— no, the frustration, from both sides. But there was another feeling hanging in between, one that made your lungs hurt, tears fall and eyes shut. It was burning, hot, and cold.
Despair.
That’s what it was. Because not knowing what to say was maddening. Because not feeling enough took the air out of his lungs. Because the insinuation of death made you travel to that day in Sochi when both of you thought you had lost it all. When he was milliseconds away from that barrier, praying to come back into your arms. When you were in Barcelona, waiting for calls that never seemed to arrive. 
“Mi vida” You heard him say after a couple of minutes. “Can you please come here?”
Your mind hesitates, but your body is already turning around, walking towards him, stopping centimeters away from him.
Your eyes meet, he inhales despair but you exhale answers. That’s all you need.
Looking up at you, his hands travel to the back of your thighs, bringing you closer, letting his head fall into your belly. Your hands play with his messy hair, a small piece of gravel finding your fingers, and you flinch.
“Carlos” He looks up “I love you”
Big brown eyes soften a sad connotation within them. His right-hand cups your face, and the other one holds your waist, pulling. You sit next to him.
“I’m sorry,” He says, his hands with yours “I’m sorry for being reckless, I just- It’s just a lot”
“I know,” You say, and it’s true. Driving in F1 has never been easy, no matter the team, the pressure of not knowing could bring the worst out of an athlete. Talking about feelings has never been easy, but you both try your best “I’m sorry for getting so angry, I just worry for you”
“I know,” He says. “Thank you for worrying”
You take a moment to look at him, at his shoulder, his wrist, his face, the crash. There’s a thought, an alteration of the one before each race. What if he didn’t come back?
“You are enough, Carlitos, I want you to know that”
“Thank you”
Softly, your arms circle his waist and your face is buried in his neck, his hands find your back. That burning feeling starts to fade.
“I love you,” He says as he presses a kiss to your head. “I’m always coming back, no matter what. Lo prometo”

2007
"Please." Max begged as he looked down at his kart, panic settling in his throat as the machine failed to start. Jos had abandoned the race once he figured out the kart wasn't going to move an inch, and Max held onto the tight string of hope that maybe it could still race.
"Please please please." He begged, trying again and again. "Tu es Bien?" Looking up he's met with your eyes. You could see he was hyperventilating, panic in his eyes, his hands shaking.
"C'est bien. C'est bien." You crouched down, putting your hand on his shoulder. Comforting him slowly. "Aller." You gestured for him to get off, and he did. And although he didn't understand you, he was ready to trust you.
Pulling your tool set out of your pocket, you began your work, Max fidgeting with his hands as he watched quietly. "Common tu t'appelle?" "Huh?" He barley understood the basics, let alone with your accent. "She asked what your name is." Charles popped out of no where, explaining.
"Max." "Ahh, le grand Max Verstappen." He felt himself blush understanding the title. You knew who he was? "Quel âge a tu?" "She's asking how old you are." Max glared at Charles huffing, feeling like he ruined the moment. "Ten." He answered.
"Dix? J'ai dix-sept." And although you were a whole 7 years older than him, he felt attracted to you. Fixing a few wires, you quickly finished up patting the seat for Max. He immediately got in, starting the kart successfully.
"Congratulations." You patted his head, pocketing your tools.

2015
"C'est superbe." You put your hand out for him to shake. Without hesitation, Max shook your hand you could see his eyes wrinkle with a hidden smile beneath his helmet as he greeted you at parc freme.
Although he hadn't beaten you to P1, he felt pretty good losing to you. "Ton premier podium, n'est-ce pas sympa?" [your first podium, isnt that nice?] He couldn't understand you, but your voice and accent got him higher than any drug, made him blush more than any compliment.
He had ran after you as soon as you popped the champagne, making sure to empty all the contents of the expensive bottle on you as you tried to escape him, laughs falling from your mouth like waterfalls, music to his ears.
He set his mind to it, to get a podium with you every race to hear this laugh, and to learn French in attempt to rizz you up. Maybe he can ask you out?
"Y/N." He caught up to you after getting off the podium. "I was wondering if you wanted to go out to dinner if you're free?" "Ah! C'est une super idée, je connais un super restaurant ici à Monte Carlo." [yes! that's a great idea, i know a great restaurant here in monte carlo] You nodded eagerly handing your trophy to Charles ( who was making grabby hands for it ) and the champagne to Lorenzo.
"Est-ce que ça va si ma famille m'accompagne aussi?" [is it okay if my family tags along] "Quoi? Non! Tu as dit qu'il n'y aurait que nous!" [what? no! you said it would just be us!] "She's asking if it's okay for us to tag along." Lorenzo translates for Max, making the two teens glare at each other. "It's fine I guess. What ever you want." Max shrugged with a small smile.
"C'est une affaire." [its a deal] You shook his hand nodding.
Oh wow your hands were soft. Max felt embarrassed by his own rough and rigidi ones. "Je viendrai vous chercher dans quelques instants." [i'll pick you up in a few] You ruffled his hair before pulling your cousins away.
'Note to self,' max thought, 'Learn French.'

2016
"Le grand Max." You joked as you watched max receive the P1 trophy. He was overjoyed as he held it, gently pulling you in a hug which you returned laughing, patting his back.
"Merci, Y/N." "P1 vous convient." [P1 suit you] You teased booping his nose before receiving your P2 trophy, raising it for your Ferrari team to see. Max could only smile, admiring your happy glow as you lifted you champagne bottle up.
He's been staring to long, watching you pop the bottle, too distracted to begin his escape from you. He was soaked from head to toe before you were done with him, a chocking and laughing mess. "Allez." You gestured for him to lean backwards on your outstretched arm, raising the bottle up.
"I can't— I—" He cut himself off, letting you dip him down and pour the expensive alcohol down his throat, emptying it in his mouth. He held onto your race suit, doing his best to gulp down the liquid. "Voilà!" [there you go] You cheered once he got back up on his feet, all dizzy and disoriented.
"Y a-t-il quelque chose entre toi et Max?" [is there something between you and max] Charles asked once you handed him your new trophy. 'Me and Max?' You though for the first time. An idea that made your heart flutter. You've never thought about Max that way before, and you're sure he wouldn't think of you that way either.
He was only 18, and you were 25. Plus you two were drivers that competed against each other. It's not like you two could be in a relationship. What would people think?
But now that the idea was given to you, you couldn't get it out of your head. Even with Max sitting beside you on a random rock, watching the sunset in a random location drinking beer. "Hey why do they call it— MHPH~" He was surly taken aback, never in his 18 years of life would he expect this.
You turned your face into his, crashing your lips into his. It was a passionate kiss. Max could feel fireworks erupt in his heart as you moved your soft lips against his. He held onto your shoulder, panting as he squeezed his eyes shut. "Y/N." He begged between kisses.
Snapping out of it, you pulled away with wide eyes as you watched Max catch his breath. "Y/N." He tried to lean in and catch you again only for you to lean back, gulping. "We— we cant. You're— you're just a kid." You tried to reason.
Was max dreaming? He's hearing you speak English? He must be dead.
"I like you, Y/N. I do." "What what the people think? The media? We— we can't— mhh~" You moaned into his lips, gently gripping his hair as he leaned into your body, lips meeting yours once again. "We don't have to tell them. We—we can keep this between us." He promised, holding your hand.

2017
Making eye contact with Max, you stubbly nod to a random corner gesturing for him to take a time out. You could see his face blush as he struggled to make up an excuse to get away.
You trapped him in a corner once you got the chance, leaning down and connecting your lips with him into a soft and hungry kiss. This has been going on for months now, sneaking away only for you to trap Max between your arms as you made out.
You could feel his hand fist your shirt as you trailed your kisses down his neck, careful not to leave any marks. You could feel him stutter and stumble on his breath as one of your hands traced and danced slowly to where he needed you most.
"Y/N." You could hear him gasp as you helped him get rid of the tension on his pants. "Bon garçon." [good boy] You whispered in his ear once he finished as he struggled to catch his breath, falling on his bum on the floor like putty.
You leaned down, wiping the lipstick off his skin and zipping up his pants, leaving one last kiss in the corner of his mouth before disappearing same way you came.

"Voyonsssss." [lets seee] You giggled as you adjusted the Santa hat on your head, beginning to pull the wrapper of your gift apart to reach your secret Santa present. "J'espère que c'est soit de kimi parce que je sais que ce serait marrant de sa part, soit de seb. Je parie que seb fait les meilleurs cadeaux." [i hopping it's either from kimi because i know it would be fun from him, or or seb. I bet seb makes the best gifts.]
You chuckled, opening the gift to see a small pink hot wheels Porsche glued to the lid of a box. "Qu'est-ce que c'est?" [what's this] you chuckled confused as you pulled the little box open, pulling the paper out. "Manuel du conducteur?" [drivers manual] You read through the text confused, chuckling nervously.
"Je— Oh non." [I- oh no] You dropped the items covering your face, tears welling up in your eyes. "Pardon, pardon." [sorry sorry] you apologized quickly picking back up the box, pulling out the porsche car keys. "Oh mon dieu." [oh my god]. Looking at the driver's manual you could only squeal as more happy tears ran down your eyes.
"Someone got me a porsche?! Whos in their right mind!?" You wiped your tears pulling out the written card. "So you can go watch all the sunsets you want in style. Who's crazy enough to do this." "Is it your dream car?" "It is, oh my god." You fussed kissing the keys. "It's that idiot Max, I bet. He is so dead."
"Do you like it?" Max asked as he passed by, taking a sip from his Redbull can to try and hide his smile. "C'mere." "Oh shit." He ran away from you quickly as you started to chase him.

2019
"You're an asshole." You gently smacked his bicep as you undid his shirt. Max visibly gulped, feeling your finger trace down his bare chest. "Do you want to stop? We can stop whenever you want." You assured, looking into his eyes.
Max was quick to shake his head. He wanted his first and only times to be with you. Although to the reasoning as to why he was having his first time in the passenger seat of your 911 targa was a mystery to him. He felt his breath hitch as you trailed kisses down his body, feeling on fire despite the January weather of Belgium.
He couldn't stop his hands from roaming your body once it was your turn to undress, his eyes looking at you with hunger and admiration, memorizing every inch. "I need you." He cursed, hooking his finger and pulling down your underwear slowly.
"Si impatient." [so impatient] You scolded him as you leaned your hands on his chest, sinking all the way down. You've never heard Max moan so loud and so much before. He was a practically in wonderland the whole time, gripping your hips with numerous sounds, whimpers, sinful noises falling from his mouth.
It turned you on knowing you had this effect on him, feeling him buck his hips up every few thrusts, curl his toes, beg for you. "My love— my love, I'm so close." He begged you as he leaned his head on your shoulder, hugging your waist as he practically slammed up into you chasing his orgasm.
"You fit me so perfectly, Y/N. You feel— fuck s—so good." He was a babbling mess to say the least. You could only giggle and encourage him in his ear as he neared you your own high.
"Good boy." You praised in his ear quietly as you stroked his hair, feeling his chest heave against yours. "Such a good boy." You hummed stroking his cheek gently as he brought his knees up, hugging you tighter, nuzzling in your neck. "W—wanna stay like this for a while longer." You could only giggle as you relaxed in his arms, playing with the hair on the nape of neck.

2023
Max immediately recognized you once he felt your hands cover his ears. He turned to face you, a wide smile covering his face as you prevented the loud noise from his car from bothering him any further. "What are you doing here?"
You'd gotten a message from Max about feeling negative. You didn't even hesitate to fly down to Abu Dhabi for the season finally.
Max turned his body to you, pulling you in a gentle hug. "What are you scared about? You're Max Verstappen." You kissed his cheek. gently. You could see Max's blue eyes searching for the blob of blond hair he's come to love.
"Mika's with Sergio." He couldn't hear you, but he could read your lips. "She wearing-" He made a movement gesturing to noise cancelling headphones and you nodded. "You didn't have to fly down, love." He sighed pressing his forehead to yours. "Eh. Ima pretend I didn't hear that." You chuckled pressing a soft peck to his lips.
"Oh come on." Charles put his hands between you pushing you apart. "Char what the—" you playfully kicked his shin before greeting him with a hug. "That's what you get for not coming to see me first." He squeezed you. "Still can't believe you betrayed the Leclerces for him." He pointed accusingly at Max with a frown.
"Mate, you were my best man!" Max defended throwing his hands up. "Doesn't mean i like this." Charles joked pointed between both of you. "You were the first one other than us to hold mika!" "And I don't like the reason behind Mika."
"Boo!" You looked down seeing said child grab Charles calf. Seconds later she sneezed ending up with her falling on her bum. Panic was induced as she began crying with Max quickly falling into action and lifting the 2 year-old up.
"Papa!" Dayum she forgot she was crying real quick. "it's time for me to run away." You whispered taking a few steps back, only for Charles to hold you from your collar and pull you back. "Wait what are you doing here?" "To make fun of you." You told Charles sarcastically, standing beside Max who was showering his daughter with affection and kisses.
"My turn." Charles demanded finally hugging Mika. "You forgot something, again." you told Max as you lifted his left hand up, slipping the golden band on his ring finger. Max could only laugh as he watched you nod in satisfaction, kissing your hand. "I told you I left it behind so I don't lose it. You know I have the outline tattooed." He pulled you in whispering in your ear, making you giggle.
"How about this to make it up for me, after this you win, we can—" You cupped you hand over his ear as you whispered to him. Max made a few faces from impressed to surprised, to smug. Sergio couldn't even imagine as he watched Max pull away and wink at you, already regretting to come greet you when you're within 6 feet of your husband.
"I'll see you after the race, amour." You kissed his cheek, hand lingering on his chest before you took Mika away. "Ah! Salut, Sergio. Comment allez-vous." [hey, sergio. how are you] "Not good after what I just saw." "You have two kids, man up." You joked before taking your daughter away to watch the race. "See you darling." You waved at Max before disappearing.

Max met her in secondary school, his life was crazy. Between juggling school, his fathers harsh parenting and formula three, he met Y/n. They became bestfriends almost immediately.
Y/n was like a breath of fresh air in his chaotic lifestyle. Always patient and understood if he couldn't hang out. It did help that she knew what Max was getting himself into, her father would watch formula one and he was a big fan of the sport.
When Max got signed to Toro Rosso in 2015, Y/n was the first one he told. He remembers the phone call oh so well.

After a couple of rings, Max heard her through his phone. She sounded tired but would always have a cheery aura to her even through the phone.
"Max are you alright?" It was then when Max realised that Australia, where he was for the grand prix, was six hours ahead of the Netherlands. This meant that it was currently four am for Y/n.
"Yeah sorry, I just realised what time it is for you..." He tooking a sharp breath, debating whether he should let Y/n sleep and tell her later. "I have news, it's very exciting!"
Max heard her shuffle in bed. "Oh yeah, go on"
"You better be clearing you schedule because I'm going to be in formula one!!" Y/n's audible gasp was heard through the phone. "Formula one zonneschijn!"
Of course since it was the middle of the night, Y/n kept her celebration quiet. So in hushed whispers she replied. “No way! Max that’s amazing”
Max could of sworn he heard her voice break. Was she crying? “I’m so proud of you Maxy!”

Max swears that day was the day he fell in love with her. They were only 17 and 16, mere teenagers. But his whole perspective of her changed.
Sadly Y/n couldn’t make his formula debut but he knew that she was watching on from home. She was studying, trying to get through college and through to university.
Of course the two kept close, face times and messages became important to them as Max was travelling his way around the planet.
Soon enough Max caught up the courage to ask her out over summer break. He took her to their favourite restaurant. And whilst on the date, he then asked her to be his girlfriend to which she nodded excitedly with a big smile on her face.
Everyone was happy for the new couple, admittedly upset they didn’t see much of the two together because of their privacy and schedules.

2016
It was in 2016 when Max started driving for Redbull racing that he also started to drift from Y/n. He didn’t want to and it wasn’t a choice he made easily.
Of course growing up, Max saw what happens in motorsport. He knew it was dangerous and always life threatening.
Max was in the paddock when he watched Jules Bianchi crash in 2014. He knew how it effected Jules’ close family and friends, Max was friends with Charles who struggled.
He remembers being told that Jules died after Jules was in a coma for nine months.
And Max didn’t want that weight on Y/n if something were to happen. He didn’t want the press to crowd her and he didn’t want to give her that much grief.
So he drifted, as much as he hated it, he drifted away from. This of course drew red flags for Y/n.
Before they would text non stop every day but now Max barely replied. Before they would spend almost all his free time together, binge watching their favourite shows or eating at their favourite restaurant or even just napping together.
But now Max would intentionally fill his time with work, much like his father once did. He remembers looking in the mirror and just seeing his father, that scared him but it didn’t stop him.

Y/n had managed to get ahold of Max, she called him asking if he could meet her at their favourite restaurant. Unlike her usual cheery tone, she sounded deflated.
Pulling up to the restaurant, he saw her through the window sat at their table. And as he walked in, he didn’t receive his usual warm hug from her so he just sat down opposite. Looking at her as if he didn’t know what was going on.
“Hey what’s up?” Max asked the girl opposite him. He was scared of her, she wasn’t Y/n.
“Um…how do I say this?” Her soft voice came out still as deflated as before. What Y/n said next hit, the new formula one driver hard. “You’re gonna leave me…aren’t you?”
It was as if everything around Max had stopped. Only then did he realise what he did to her. Max thought that this was the best option, drifting away, but instead what he had done was make her feel unloved and feel like the relationship was one sided. “No. No of course not zonneschijn!”
He was quick to protest but was quick shushed when Y/n started to shake her head. “Max…please don’t, don’t try to tell me different because you are…you’re gonna leave, it’s okay”
Collecting her stuff, Y/n started to leave. Max couldn’t do anything, he knew what he’d done and he knew he could come back from that. “I love you Max…always have and always will” Y/n whispered before turning her back to him and leaving.
Max watched her walk out of the restaurant and walk home, he felt ashamed and regretful that he lost the best thing he’ll ever have. But he promised to keep her in his heart until the day that he would die.

2023
It was over seven years since Max last saw her but he never let her out of his heart and mind. He had just won his third world championship and Sky Sports had pulled him over to have a quick interview.
“Hi Max! Well done on your third world championship, how are you feeling?” The sky sport journalist asks whilst Max is handed his mic.
“Yeah I feel so grateful that I am able to achieve this for the third time” Max smiles politely, not the biggest fan of post race/sprint interviews but pr insist.
“Is there anyone who you feel like you owe this to? Any family? I know that your father is very supportive of your career”
“Um yeah…” He takes a pause, and then his mind goes back to his sunshine, Y/n. “I think I’ll have to thank an old friend…she knows who she is, I hope she knows that I appreciate and love her more and more everyday” Looking into the camera, Maxs heart tells him that she is there watching from home supporting him.
He also knew that everyone knew who he was talking about, they always did.

The Bahrain post-race celebrations were in full swing at the swanky F1 club. Y/N, still riding the high of her P2 finish, sipped on a non-alcoholic drink, surrounded by the jubilant Red Bull team. Max, ever the party animal, was already on the dance floor, his gangly limbs flailing to the thumping music.
Across the room, Lewis nursed a beer, a dark cloud hanging over him. Y/N's talent was undeniable, and her audacious overtake had left a bitter taste in his mouth. He couldn't help but steal glances at her, her laughter echoing amidst the chatter.
Suddenly, Y/N spotted Nico weaving through the crowd. A smile lit up her face. "Hey, Nico! Come meet Lando," she waved him over.
Lewis watched their interaction, tension coiling in his gut. Nico, ever the protective brother, ruffled Y/N's hair. "So, the wonder rookie," he chuckled, turning to Lando. "Looks like you've got some competition on your hands."
Lando grinned. "Always up for a challenge, Mr. Rosberg. But seriously, P2 in your first race? That's legendary!"
Y/N snorted. "Calm down, Lando. It was just luck."
"Luck, talent, and a whole lot of Rosberg grit," Nico winked. A strong whiff of vanilla overwhelmed the air when Lewis walked past. Then, leaning closer to Y/N, Nico added, "Is the motherfucker wearing vanilla cologne? You remember when you said you loved vanilla on men?"
Y/N's eyes widened in amusement. "Oh my god! He really is. He used to smell like vanilla cupcakes all the time. Too bad he's an asshole now."
A jolt of electricity shot through Lewis. The memory slammed into him with the force of a high-speed collision. 2014, pre-championship battles, a time when he and Nico were still friends. A time when he'd harbored a secret crush on Y/N. He'd doused himself in that damn vanilla cologne, hoping to catch her attention.
The image of Y/N snuggling into his chest, a contented sigh escaping her lips as she inhaled the scent, flooded his mind. He'd been so close, so naively hopeful. But then 2015 came, shattering their friendship and burying his feelings under an avalanche of competitive fury.
The past dissolved as he saw Y/N and Lando laughing, their bodies swaying close as they danced. A bitter pang of jealousy twisted in his gut. He couldn't help but notice the way Lando's arm brushed against Y/N's back, sending a fresh wave of irritation through him.
Just then, Lewis's gaze collided with Nico's. Nico's expression was a chilling mix of anger and concern. He strode across the room, his movements purposeful. Stopping in front of Lewis, he lowered his voice, a dangerous edge to it. "You can hate me," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "You can fight me, Lewis, that's old news. But raise a hand on my sister ever again… and I will make your life hell," he trailed off, his eyes blazing.
Lewis's breath hitched. Only then did he truly see the bruise on Y/N's hand, a dark purple blotch against her pale skin. Shame washed over him, hot and unwelcome. His eyes darted between the bruise and Nico's furious face. He knew, with a sickening certainty, that he'd crossed a line.

Q: Sebastian, where does your passion for motor sports come from? A: It’s simple! I come from a family passionate about motorsport who gradually transmitted the virus to me. As my father was driving in hillclimbs, we were already immersed in competition. As a child I remember I was watching the Formula 1 Grand Prix with him. Then, feeling that I was interested, my father gave me a kart which I could do tricks with in the garden. I must have been 3 or 4 and a half years old when I started. You see, this goes a long way back! Q: What are your best memories from karting? A: Like many drivers, I have very good memories of my years in karting. There have been important victories like my first title in Bambini class B when I was 10 years old. 2001 was a significant year in  ICA-Junior with victories in the European Championship, the German Championship and Monaco Kart Cup driving a Tony Kart / Vortex. I  remember in particular Michael Schumacher personally handing me the winner’s trophy after a race at Kerpen. I will never forget this important moment … Q: In your opinion, what is the role of karting in the development of a driver? A: These are the first experiments in motorsport. We have many things to learn, starting with the discipline to succeed. One learns to assimilate the circuits and to understand the operation of the machine. Gradually his driving personality is forged. This is obvious, but we must remember that karting is the best school to prepare for car racing. To succeed, a young driver must believe in himself and follow his own path to achieve his objectives, without forgetting the pleasure of driving. Q: What do you think of the current karting competition? A: Karting has become more expensive and that’s a shame, but everything has become more expensive in life in general. I think that karting must strive to become affordable without losing sight of its origins. I know efforts are being made to provide greater equity and to produce more exciting races. I ACTUALLY HAVE MORE THAN BREADCRUMBS......heres some backstory some lore its incomplete but yeah take what i have :)
COMPREHENSIVE ANDROID AU
Cars and Drivers essentially have a symbiotic relationship, the cars have been designed to require an android pilot, with their power units/batteries being linked into one another. While traditional safety concerns are not something to worry about, this link between the electronics of the car and the driver means that malfunctions and damage to the car can result in technical damage to the driver. For example, if the car's own power systems begin failing, it may begin leech too much power from its driver, spreading battery life too thinly and causing shutdown for them both. Plugging into the car essentially puts the driver into a hyper-powered state, the car becoming an extension of their body.
Drivers can accrue damage of course, and like with cars there is a limited amount of replacement parts allowed each season, with penalties being doled out if breached.
F100 models are the standard approved android for F1 Racing, replacing the previous F01 models in 2015. The androids themselves are developed by independent manufacturers, each offering specific strengths, focuses, and technologies- teams themselves are forbidden from android manufacturing, ensuring that there is still competition and markets for drivers. The main challenge for teams is to develop cars and software, and then finding android drivers most compatible with their teams systems.
When a team secures a driver, they are fitted with a new head component that visually denotes them as part of that team and also holds/runs any team specific programming, and is responsible for the main compatibility with the car. Android drivers physically cannot pilot other teams cars unless the corresponding head unit is installed.
Androids hold little personal autonomy in this world, and typically have lives very controlled by their teams, as they are as much of an asset as the cars. This may vary depending on manufacturer and team attitude/culture, with some allowing for more freedom of expression and relative "personhood" of their android drivers, but undoubtedly still will maintain a great deal of control.
LETS GET INTO THE DRIVERSSS
Charles: F100-R18 Model by Leclerc Engineering, running CL16 / A charming and quick model, it is rumored that his core programming, processing, and body itself were secretly developed by Ferrari associates rather than fully by an independent manufacturer. This has led to a bit of drama surrounding him, with people questioning the team's involvement in building an android from scratch specifically to drive their cars, but his success has not been dominant enough for people to make too much of a fuss. There has been very little data showing if Charles is compatible with non-ferrari tech, one of the few things that would disprove the rumors around him, but the team shows no signs of trying to part with him any time soon.
Carlos: F100-R15 Model by Sainz Company running CS55 / A unique model of the F100, developed off of the Sainz Company's highly successful RA7-CS model, developed for Rally driving. The RA7 was re-engineered to match specs of the standard F100, while retaining durability and adaptability aspects the RA7 was made famous for. A unique model on the track, he has faced constant skepticism for not being as well optimized.
Lance: F100-R17 Model by Lawrence Stroll, running LS18 / In contrast to other racing androids, Lance was developed with many components more traditional to companion androids, and is treated like a son by his developer, Lawrence Stroll. When not driving, Lance lives a very human life, and is the apple of his creator's eye, garnering them both criticism over Lance's belonging in such a cutthroat sport. He also faces similar scrutiny to Charles, in that Stroll owns the racing team, as well as individually developing driving androids. He continues to state that Lance was developed first as a son, only second as a racing driver, and his model has shown compatibility with other teams cars.
Fernando: F01-R02.WDC Model by FA Alonso Kart & Sports, running FA14 / An otherwise defunct model, Fernando is still running despite it all. New softwares that he should not be compatible with, upgraded parts that should not fit, he somehow manages to make work, and deliver consistent results.
This can be credited to a massive electronic overload during a crash in 2015, in which he suffered a complete system malfunction. He appeared to just need a reboot and recalibration, but the incident unknowingly released previously encrypted team information into Fernando's memory and bypassed/disarmed a number of obsolescence measures that had been placed on his model, allowing his internal AI and adaptive systems to essentially run free.
Logan: F100-R23 Model by Sergeant Manufacturing, running LS2 / The only American made model on the grid, which has faced some scrutiny, as the crossover from American motorsports to International has not yet been the smoothest. A very new and untested model as well, approved for F1 in 2023, he has not proven to be the most compatible with the current Williams car, frequently facing technical issues.
Oscar: F100-R23 Model by Webber Technologies, running OP81 / Oscar's model was developed under the Australian manufacturer Webber Technologies, basing his internal systems off their previously successful F01-R02. He faced controversy when entering the Mclaren team, as Webber Technologies had a long term testing deal with Alpine while developing their F100 and his accompanying OP81 programming. While it is insisted that procedures were properly followed when erasing proprietary Alpine information from the OP81 program, some are suspicious due to his high level of success upon entering the Mclaren. Some theorize something else entirely, that Webber had been secretly testing Mclaren software in the OP81 system for much longer than anticipated, and optimizing the android for their car specifically prior to signing.

Yea, I've read it. (Mosquito Empires: Ecology and War in the Greater Caribbean, 1620-1914, basically about influence of environment and specifically insect-borne disease on colonial/imperial projects. Kinda brings to mind Centering Animals in Latin American History [Few and Tortorici, 2013] and the exploration of the centrality of ecology/plants to colonialism in Plants and Empire: Colonial Bioprospecting in the Atlantic World [Schiebinger, 2007].)
If you're interested: So, in the article we're discussing, Rohan Deb Roy shows how Victorian/Edwardian British scientists, naturalists, academics, administrators, etc., used language/rhetoric to reinforce colonialism while characterizing insects, especially termites in India and elsewhere in the tropics, as "Goths"; "arch scourge of humanity"; "blight of learning"; "destroying hordes"; and "the foe of civilization". [Rohan Deb Roy. “White ants, empire, and entomo-politics in South Asia.” The Historical Journal. October 2019.] He explores how academic and pop-sci literature in the US and Britain participated in racist dehumanization of non-European people by characterizing them as "uncivilized", as insects/animals. (This sort of stuff is summarized by Neel Ahuja, describing interplay of race, gender, class, imperialism, disease/health, anthropomorphism. See Ahuja's “Postcolonial Critique in a Multispecies World.”)
In a different 2018 article on "decolonizing science," Deb Roy also moves closer to the issue of mosquitoes, disease, hygiene, etc. explored in Mosquito Empires. Deb Roy writes: 'Sir Ronald Ross had just returned from an expedition to Sierra Leone. The British doctor had been leading efforts to tackle the malaria that so often killed English colonists in the country, and in December 1899 he gave a lecture to the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce [...]. [H]e argued that "in the coming century, the success of imperialism will depend largely upon success with the microscope."''
Deb Roy also writes elsewhere about "nonhuman empire" and how Empire/colonialism brutalizes, conscripts, employs, narrates other-than-human creatures. See his book Malarial Subjects: Empire, Medicine and Nonhumans in British India, 1820-1909 (published 2017).

In that Deb Roy article, there is a section where we see that some Victorian writers pontificated on how "ants have colonies and they're quite hard workers, just like us!" or "bugs have their own imperium/domain, like us!" So that bugs can be both reviled and also admired. On a similar note, in the popular imagination, about anthropomorphism of Victorian bugs, and the "celebrated" "industriousness" and "cleverness" of spiders, there is: Claire Charlotte McKechnie. “Spiders, Horror, and Animal Others in Late Victorian Empire Fiction.” Journal of Victorian Culture. December 2012. She also addresses how Victorian literature uses natural science and science fiction to process anxiety about imperialism. Related anthologies include a look at other-than-humans in literature and popular discourse: Gothic Animals: Uncanny Otherness and the Animal With-Out (Heholt and Edmunson, 2020). There are a few studies/scholars which look specifically at "monstrous plants" in the Victorian imagination. In fields like geography, history of science, etc., much has been said/written about how botany was the key imperial science/field, and there is the classic quintessential tale of the British pursuit of cinchona from Latin America, to treat mosquito-borne disease among its colonial administrators in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. In other words: Colonialism, insects, plants in the West Indies shaped and influenced Empire and ecosystems in the East Indies, and vice versa. One overview of this issue from Early Modern era through the Edwardian era, focused on Britain and cinchona: Zaheer Baber. "The Plants of Empire: Botanic Gardens, Colonial Power and Botanical Knowledge." May 2016. Elizabeth DeLoughrey and other scholars of the Caribbean, "the postcolonial," revolutionary Black Atlantic, etc. have written about how plantation slavery in the Caribbean provided a sort of bounded laboratory space. (See Britt Rusert's "Plantation Ecologies: The Experiential Plantation [...].") The argument is that plantations were already of course a sort of botanical laboratory for naturalizing and cultivating valuable commodity plants, but they were also laboratories to observe disease spread and to practice containment/surveillance of slaves and laborers. See also Chakrabarti's Bacteriology in British India: laboratory medicine and the tropics (2012). Sharae Deckard looks at natural history in imperial/colonial imagination and discourse (especially involving the Caribbean, plantations, the sea, and the tropics) looking at "the ecogothic/eco-Gothic", Edenic "nature", monstrous creatures, exoticism, etc. Kinda like Grove's discussion of "tropical Edens" in the colonial imagination of Green Imperialism.
Dante Furioso's article "Sanitary Imperialism" (from e-flux's Sick Architecture series) provides a summary of US entomology and anti-mosquito campaigns in the Caribbean, and how "US imperial concepts about the tropics" and racist pathologization helped influence anti-mosquito campaigns that imposed racial segregation in the midst of hard labor, gendered violence, and surveillance in the Panama Canal zone. A similar look at manipulation of mosquito-borne disease in building empire: Gregg Mitman. “Forgotten Paths of Empire: Ecology, Disease, and Commerce in the Making of Liberia’s Plantation Economy.” Environmental History. 2017. (Basically, some prominent medical schools/departments evolved directly out of US military occupation and industrial plantations of fruit/rubber/sugar corporations; faculty were employed sometimes simultaneously by fruit companies, the military, and academic institutions.) This issue is also addressed by Pratik Chakrabarti in Medicine and Empire, 1600-1960 (2014).
