I love what Jon Bois did!! So much!!! The concept of humans living forever and just doing FOOTBALL?? INCREDIBLE SHOWSTOPPING I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!! Having the main characters be satellites was a move I was not expecting but HOT DAMN did it work!!!

im absolutely going crazy lmao, I finally finished 17776 and am reading the sequel 20020, and I fucking hate it when straight people are in love in stories but the second it gets gay I'm all, "lol you know what I'm in, this is cute" and I'm getting absolutely destroyed. how and why is football a love story. these two guys are the whole team. every time they fight I'm so invested.

You know, actually getting into the Sandman fandom has given me a brand new idea:

A crossover with 17776, wherein the story takes place in an alternate universe where Death of the Endless decided to abandon her post for whatever reason, and her realm is thrown into disarray as a result.

Contrary to what many may think, this does not stop things from dying. After all, the Prodigal abandoning his duties in canon has hardly stopped his realm from existing, has it? So yes, things still die, it’s just that their souls don’t have a psychopomp to guide them to the afterlife. No, the problem here is that because the Endless also embody their opposites, Death is also supposed to be there at the beginning to bestow the gift of life to every living thing. And because she’s gone, things stop being born.

This is what causes the Moment on April 7th, 2026.

Now because this is an alternate universe, things don’t necessarily need to have happened the same way as in canon. Maybe Destruction never left. Maybe Dream and Desire never had a falling out. Maybe Death never had the realization that led her to be at peace with her role, and that’s why she left.

Either way, Death has gone AWOL, and both the Endless and the universe at large are left to pick up the pieces.

To be honest, I think it’d be really interesting to explore the characters of the Sandman in the world of 17776, and there are so many interesting ways it could go. You don’t even have to tether the whole thing in the DC Universe or focus on the inner relationships of the Endless that much!

Like, for example, in the Sandman comics there are already thousands of immortals on Earth from all sorts of time periods, with a few even pre-dating the dinosaurs as strange as that sounds: There’s Hob Gadling, who is literally Just Some Dude who happens to have been born in the 1300′s. There’s Thessaly, who is an actual cold-hearted witch from ancient Greece. There’s Mad Hettie, who's definitely more than a little batty, but is also a practicing haruspex who’s picked up more than a few tricks over the centuries. Hell, there’s even John Ryder, the world-weary living incarnation of Pestilence. How would each one react in the aftermath of the Moment, or in the 3500′s when the nanoparticle network was finally perfected? How are they affected by the way society changes in the millennia that follows? The views on immortality from the people around them?

Or the many alien races in the Sandman: Overture. 17776 has already established that after millennia of searching, humanity never managed to find anyone out there. Of course, you could argue that the universe is a big, big place, but still: what happened to them? Were they consumed by war? Did their societies collapse before they could figure out effective immortality? Were they wiped out by a reality-restructuring event (yes, those are a thing that can happen in Sandman)? Were they the victims of some catastrophic supernatural event(s)? Were they killed off by whatever erased the Terran civilizations that came before the dinosaurs without a trace? Did they adopt an isolationist policy so as to not be affected by the aforementioned disasters? Were there a few who, like humans, went looking but eventually gave up? All of the above? None?

What about the lost souls of the dead? The ones who never got where they needed to go? Do they just wander around? Do they haunt the living in the subtlest of ways? Preludes and Nocturnes states that when an Endless has gone for whatever reason, the universe subconsciously seeks to fill in the gap where possible even if the solution is shoddy at best (this felt like mostly just a way to include Wesley Dodds, but I digress). Do a few become psychopomps themselves? Do others set up a heist to rescue souls from places of damnation?

Or heck, Hell. Hell is a thing in the Sandman. What’s going on with them? Souls have stopped coming in and the demons grow restless. Is there another demonic civil war? Do a few escape to the mortal world to sate their hunger for violence? Is that part of why there are considerably less aliens that usual? Do some try to save the economy of Hell by counterfeiting lost souls (tbh this one’s actually from Hellblazer, but I do find the concept kinda funny so I’m leaving it in)?

And then there’s the time-honored tradition of the Endless interacting with mortals. How much does Despair stare out of the mirrors now that they’re all constantly faced with the loneliness of eternity? How does humans being immortal affect their tales in the Book of Destiny? How does Dream deal with the Dreaming being different, now that all the children have gone?

And, above all, how do they all react to the mortals’ ability to keep going? To find hope even in the face of an existence that stretches on forever? Even after having the rug pulled out from under them and learning that they might as well be alone in the universe? To still choose to look down, and appreciate what they always had and loved? And, at the end of it all, to make janky-ass impossible sportsball games that capture everything about what makes mortals so chaotic and incredible?

I've been thinking a lot about 17776 recently.

A story which like, if you haven't yet read, you totally should, it's amazing, you can read it here

if you have read it, or don't care about spoilers for the main premise of the story, continue on

This post doesn't really have a point to make I'm mostly just rambling about my thoughts

So I've been thinking a lot about the question of like... What would I do with infinite time?

If I knew I was never going to die, never going to have any worries, if I lived in a true post-scarcity society down to the resource of time, what would I do to pass that infinite time?

And just like... it's an odd question to really think about because like. Any individual activity that you find to do is going to be finite, and if the timescale you're working with is infinite, you will eventually finish that activity. You can take any impossibly large-yet-finite task, and set out to do it, and eventually be done!

Like. If I wanted to sit down, and play every single video game ever released, in order, I will eventually catch up to any arbitrary video game you can choose. Even if I had a rule to play each and every one of those games for a bare minimum of 100 hours. 1000 hours, even! I would eventually work my way through that entire seemingly endless library of games released between the dawn of time, and Undertale, for example.

I could choose to watch every single video ever uploaded onto youtube in chronological order, and I would eventually catch up to any arbitrary point in time you could choose.

One could truly devote their entire life to a medium, only it wouldn't even be their entire life. It would still only be an infinitesimally small fraction of an infinite lifespan.

And the more I think about this little thought experiment, the more I almost find myself disappointed to live in a world where I can't choose to sit down and play every single video game in order, and have enough time to catch up.

The idea of "catching up" is interesting, by the way, because technically, if we kept producing video games at the rate we do, one could never play them faster than they come out. Technically, this could be an infinite task.

But I think that's what gets me is like.

I can choose today's date, at this exact point in time, and play every single game released before then and up until now, and do it!!! that's ridiculous!!!!

17776 (and it's sequel 20020) is a beautiful, amazing story, and it focuses on football, and this is because Jon Bois loves football, and loves talking about football, and wanted to tell this story about an infinite problemless humanity from the perspective of a pastime he loves. And like, that's why I want to really grapple with how would my story be different?

I'm not a football fan by any means, but I'm an avid fan of video games and I would love to see what that infinite world holds if you look at it from the perspective of my interests.

Something beautifully intrigues me about the idea of mastering every single game released, and learning every little trick and quirk about an individual game, fully mastering every element of its design before you move onto another. Fully experiencing every facet of every piece of media in a seemingly endless but still finite list.

There's the story within 17776 of a man who's been hiding in a cave for the last 9000 years, and has these little konami LCD games with him, and he plays each one for 300 years at a time, spending all of his time just. Playing this game that a lot of us would put down within minutes. Maybe hours if we're persistent.

And just.

It's overwhelming to think of how much detail and experience and beauty and things to discover there are in this world, and how comparatively little of it we each get to experience for ourselves, and I just. I get so emotional thinking about this story and about this world and about humanity. Fuck.

There is so much love and art everywhere you look and so much to experience and so much and I just. Agh!

I don't know how to end this post, there's no satisfying conclusion to the question "what if you had infinite time and you decided to play every video game that ever existed." I just think it's neat.

I'm gonna go with 17776 (and its sequel 20020) because I don't know if you've read it! and well, what's more sci fi than three satellites turned sentient talking about life, immortality and a completely made up game of football with absurd rules.

If you're looking for a game, I don't think you've played The Talos Principle yet? (also hey, it's on sale til May 8). You're an artificial construct navigating a realm of ancient ruins and technology while a god-like AI called ELOHIM watches over you. The puzzles you need to solve to advance may remind you of The Turing Test and Portal and there are terminals scattered over the levels if you want to get into the lore and history of this world/setting.

Also while it does contain spoilers someone made a functional MLA terminal in-browser with all the content from all the terminals which is a good reference if you want to read stuff outside the game.

not microfiction i'm so sorry i might have put this on twitter but character limit would behead me and i like this site more even if i don't interact with anyone on it i'm so sorry everyone i loveyou all i promise

(trying to) watch/ing witch from mercury rn - or at least i have managed to span the first 10 episodes over like 3 weeks even though i love the animation and story and characters (etc), similarly to how i never finished 20020 or reread 17776 despite loving the series so much and i can't figure out why i don't know if it's media with characters i relate to (or that i just related to in general) which instils this kind of fear of continuing (which doesn't make much sense in terms of 17776/20020 because i liked the characters but didn't really fit one (9 was nice though ily 9) but does fit wfm because i share a lot of traits etc with suletta than i would like)

but at the same time watching witch from mercury definitely IS painful because there are so many things suletta does/that happen to her (though likely not involving big space robots etc unfortunately)

just in the episode i'm up to (s1e10)

elan attempts to convince her that miorine doesn't love her and she's just using her and instead of outright declining his offer for a date she just goes "umm uhh i have to go" which i have this tendency of doing isntead of saying no really often just for kind of everything that might matter even if i have a strong feeling towards it (not trying to write this to make a comment about myself (or suletta) in terms of things like this, but rather if/how connections through things like this is what constitutes my fear for continuing)

and upon finding miorine later, she twists miorine's words in her head to fit the narrative that has been placed in her head by elan to convince herself that she doesn't love her - i am also guilty of doing this/similar just conceptualising an outcome/situation (through someone mentioning it or me just thinking about it) and then just twisting everything to believe it, and spiraling after this case

also in general she's super scared of making people upset etc - she's actually a super unique character (to my white, western mind, anyways, maybe not in japanese media, this is only the second anime i have ever watched) she's very shy but still emotive (which is similar to the only other anime protagonist i know (shinji) but she still does it in a different way and it's less dramatic irony like it is in shinji's case) but she has a bunch of quirks that add to her character like her list of things she wants to do in the special space scchool - but like grahhh i don't hide behind lightposts when i see certain people but i sure wish i could i hate making people mad and all these little struggles that she undertakes hurt a bit because i think i am connected to her character a lot or something idk maybe i just think she's neat and am overthinking this aspect but it doesn't explain my issue with continuing it any better

Ten going “Spit it out. Just spit it out.” before the reveal. Her absolutely Exasperated “OH GOD DAMN IT” Immediately afterwards. The Rapid Cuts when Juice drops in the last 1. The way it flows into revealing that this game has been going for THOUSANDS of years. I haven’t gotten so hyped up for a new story in AGES. Juice truly says it best:
