Biggest reveal of this event was that the rest of the yakshas were fun loving relatively well adjusted people (obvs before the Everything). And turns out Xiao is just like that

Trying to have friends on both sides... it has a way of turning everyone against you. But right now, I have an opportunity for you.

“Alatus,”
You whisper the name slowly, quietly, testing how it feels against your lips. The conqueror of demons sat before you, somewhat tense. His shoulders were stiff, as was his posture, but yet the small smile adorning his lips stayed.
Liyue was quiet, save for the occasional gust of wind that sang through the wind chimes that hung off the overhanging roof of the Wangshu Inn balcony, or the squeal of a boar being chased somewhere near Dihua marsh.
His gloved hands grazed yours, and you could’ve sworn you saw him shiver.
“Alatus,” You repeated the name, this time with more confidence, and looked at him, meeting golden hues.
“Say it again, just once more.”
“Alatus.”
Alatus’s small smile turned shy, and his shoulders dropped in relief.
“That…that feels nice. Great, even.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”

spoilers for the 2.7 quest
as soon as you left the chasm, you longed for a moment alone with xiao. while underground, you had been able to see parts of him you hadn't been allowed to see before.
you wished to discuss it with him, not just about his fallen brethren; to talk about his feelings. a topic that he would rather perish than to talk about. you were more than aware of it.
as the two of you stood, overlooking pervases temple, you contemplated asking him. there were so many unanswered questions left, and they conquered your mind. curiosity flooded through, and the two of you stood in mutual silence.
"can..." you trailed off, turning to him. "can I ask you something?"
he doesn't want to say yes, archons, he wanted to say no more than anything. he wanted to never have to think of those dark moments again. reality made that so little of a possibility, it was awful.
your fingers interlock with his, and he looks up at you. you have the most caring and loving eyes, so much so he wonders whether or not he deserves it.
"if you wish." he responds. he hopes you leave it at that.
"do you miss them?"
it's a question he doesn't expect. he had expected a question about his fellow yaksha, but certainly not that one.
the answer to him was so clearly obvious, he didn't hesitate in answering. of course he missed them! more than... more than what?
"I do... and-" he finds himself unable to finish his sentence. "there's nothing else I miss more."
the tears flood from him before he can stop. he can't recall the last time he had cried so fiercely. they burned his skin and left tracks that hurt more than his karma. it all hurt.
your hands leave his, and go instead to embrace him. you both kneel, and you stay connected to him. he had never allowed himself to be so incredibly vulnerable; rex lapis was the only person who had ever seen him so choked up.
and so the two of you stayed like that. the time didn't seem to matter, you would stay for as long as he needed.
he missed his brethren as much as he loved you. too much.

Welcome back to another of my rambles!
I loved the whole quest? The place playing tricks on the characters, making them question everything they see and hear was a really interesting thing.
Tumblr media
Glitch!Xiao my beloved
Also, “the fear room” really got me. I undrestand now why Shinobu wanted to be with the Arataki gang and the reason for it made me really soft.
It was really funny how serious everyone's fear was:
Itto: people being unkind and cruel to him because of his origin
Kuki: her mother who wants her to become a shrine maiden
Traveler: the effin Abyss
And then there was Yanfei's
civil disputes
Tumblr media
Also, i love how Itto calls Xiao “little dude”.
The whole quest overall was not just interesting but funny. Like, I laughed, I don't do that often while playing games. Especially during the whole Itto's: my butt hurts :((

Some of you were right in the previous post of mine! Xiao was indeed looking for Bosacius, the Yaksha who went insane and missing.
I'm not gonna lie, this whole quest made me soft, and it hit close to home. I'm glad we got to see Xiao being... well, more human. And being willing to let his guard down a bit and to accept that people care for him.

[no sound] Alt ending for the new quest I thought would be cool narratively in which human and adepti work together to save Xiao, and Yelan's strength honed after losing her first team prevents another loss

xiao gives zhongli his loyalty, his soul; zhongli has stopped needing it long ago (and even then he requested it firmly, but without harsh demand) but takes it anyways, because xiao needs him to (he doesn’t have anything else to give). “what is freedom if demanded of you by a god?” maybe zhongli has taken a page out of venti’s book and simply decides to treat xiao with kindness, as an equal. if he had mora to spare and if xiao didn’t only prefer almond tofu, he’d take xiao out to dinner every week—liyue harbor has changed so much, and perhaps there are some changes that even the last yaksha would like to experience (silently, in xiao’s quiet way)— except zhongli has no mora and xiao would scowl at a dinner anyways, which would defeat the purpose of enjoying it— so quiet fondness and stopping by wangshu inn will do for now. after all, zhongli has enough time. they have enough time.
xiao has made peace with his karma, and his duty; he was saved by yanwang dijun, and this is his debt to shoulder—liyue needs a protector, and he never shrinks from his responsibilities even when they have been too much to bear. this is the way things are. (but perhaps things are changing. he asks what zhongli is doing; viewing flowers, raising birds—perhaps... but he is a weapon and no matter what his lord has said, there are things that must be done, and he will be the person to do them. there are things that must be done, and his sacrifice would be a better price to pay compared to the sacrifices of the mortals and the not-quite-mortals; and when he is falling, falling, falling—— perhaps this is what bosacius chose and sacrificed, five hundred years ago.
except this time there is no sacrifice, and only warm, golden light, and the gentleness of a hand reaching out to him (saving him, saving him).
the first time, rex lapis saved him.
the second time, zhongli saves him.
perhaps there will be a time when he too can hear “you've finished your duties, go ahead and call it a day.”
I take absolutely no credit for the idea of morax -> zhongli saving xiao. that idea is completely credited to this galaxy brain tweet.
ending has no motivation lmao. this was meant to be a zhongli and xiao love letter but now it’s almost a drabble 🧍‍♀️
