Please post the heights!! Very very intrigued!!
cracks my knuckles. this is long as hell so its all below the cut
ok opening with the most batshit sentence you've ever heard: your average horse is approximately 15 hands tall at the withers, equal to approximately 152 centimeters or 60 inches, and warhorses must by necessity be a little taller.
so we can assume that Oscar's Horse (present in his official path of radiance artwork) is a little over 16 hands tall (164cm/64 inches). using the 3d models in clip studio paint, which are adjustable down to 1/10 of a centimeter, I put in a 164cm tall horse and a 3d model of A Man, which I then adjusted until it was as tall in proportion to the horse as oscar is in proportion to His Horse.
the conversation sprites have consistent heights, which means that once I figured out Oscar's height, I could figure out everyone else's height in relation to each other! the conclusion I came to is that most of these guys are Stupid Mad Tall!!!!
so the greil mercenaries' heights go like this:
ike: 188.3cm/6 feet 2.1 inches
soren: 176cm/5 feet 9.2 inches (the shortest of the male mercenaries!)
mist: 171cm/5 feet 7.3 inches
titania: 185cm/6 feet 0.8 inches(!!!!!)
oscar: 188cm/6 feet 2 inches exactly
boyd: 184 cm/6 feet 0.4 inches in path of radiance, but in radiant dawn he gains 6 cm/a little over 2 inches, putting him at 190cm/6 feet 2.8 inches
rolf: I only measured him in radiant dawn but at that point he is 179cm/5 feet 10.4 inches, and given boyd's growth pattern he's probably gonna end up taller
shinon: ur not gonna fuckin believe this but this motherfucker stands at 194.5cm/6 feet 4.5 inches. he slouches like hell tho so he looks shorter
gatrie: also 188cm/6 feet 2 inches
rhys: 184cm/6 feet 0.4 inches
which is all Quite A Lot!!!!! of course I couldn't stop at the greil mercenaries, so i also did a bunch of my favorites.
other crimeans:
elincia: 172cm/5 feet 7.7 inches
lucia: 183cm/6 feet exactly
bastian and geoffrey: equal height!!! they stand at 190cm/6 feet 2.8 inches
kieran: 184.8cm/6 feet 0.7 inches
nephenee: 178.5cm/5 feet 10.2 inches
volke: 191cm/6 feet 3.1 inches
daein:
micaiah: 169cm/5 feet 6.5 inches
sothe (radiant dawn): 184cm/6 feet 0.4 inches
edward: 182.4cm/5 feet 11.8 inches. im so sorry ed
leonardo: 183.6cm/6 feet 0.2 inches
pelleas: 186cm/6 feet 1.2 inches
jill: 176cm/5 feet 9.2 inches
haar: accounting for slouch, 197cm/6 feet 5.5 inches
begnion:
sanaki (radiant dawn): 166cm/5 feet 5.3 inches
sephiran: 188.5cm/6 feet 2.2 inches
zelgius: 189cm/6 feet 2.4 inches
stefan: 191cm/6 feet 3.1 inches
muarim: 197cm/6 feet 5.5 inches
tormod (radiant dawn): 175cm/5 feet 8.8 inches. no wonder he hollers at sothe for growing, given their nearly 10cm height difference
other laguz:
ranulf: 185cm/6 feet 0.8 inches
skrimir: 192cm/6 feet 3.5 inches
tibarn: 199cm/6 feet 6.3 inches (!!!!!!!!)
janaff: 176.5cm/5 feet 9.4 inches
ulki: 186cm/6 feet 1.2 inches
naesala: 192cm/6 feet 3.5 inches
reyson: 186.5/6 feet 1.4 inches
leanne: 178cm/5 feet 10 inches
I keep meaning to make rafiel's model but forgetting . oops . ANYWAY thats my way too precise height calculations!! they may be off by 4 or so inches on either side (1 hand, as horses are measured) but this is what I thought was most likely

What 10,000 horsepower does to a top fuel tire at launch.
TOP FUEL ACCELERATION PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE
* One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic-inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower (10,000 HP) than the first 5 rows at the Daytona 500.
* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1.2-1.5 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced.
* A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to merely drive the dragster's supercharger.
* With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.
* At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitro methane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.
* Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.
* Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug.
This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.
* Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.
* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.
* Dragsters reach over 300 MPH before you have completed reading this sentence.
* In order to exceed 300 MPH in 4.5 seconds, dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4 G's. In order to reach 200 MPH well before half-track, the launch acce leration approaches 8 G's.
* Top Fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!
* Including the burnout, the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load.
* The redline is actually quite high at 9500 RPM.
* THE BOTTOM LINE: Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, & for once, NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated $1,000 per second.
0 to 100 MPH in .8 seconds (the first 60 feet of the run)
0 to 200 MPH in 2.2 seconds (the first 350 feet of the run)
6 g-forces at the starting line (nothing accelerates faster on land)
6 negative g-forces upon deployment of twin ‘chutes at 300 MPH An NHRA Top Fuel Dragster accelerates quicker than any other land vehicle on earth . . quicker than a jet fighter plane . . . quicker than the space shuttle.
The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.420 seconds for the quarter-mile (2004, Doug Kalitta). The top speed record is 337.58 MPH as measured over the last 66' of the run (2005, Tony Schumacher).
Putting this all into perspective:
You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter twin-turbo powered Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged & ready to launch down a quarter-mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line & pass the dragster at an honest 200 MPH. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment.
The dragster launches & starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums & within 3 seconds the dragster catches & passes you.
He beats you to the finish line, a quarter-mile away from where you just passed him. Think about it - from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 MPH & not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race!
That's acceleration!

Cecropia Moth Caterpillars (Hyalophora cecropia) ●▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬๑۩۞۩๑.▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬● Hyalophora cecropia, the cecropia moth, is North America's largest native moth. It is a member of the family Saturniidae, or giant silk moths. Females have been documented with a wingspan of five to seven inches or more.
Like other members of the giant silk moth family, the cecropia moth lacks functional mouth parts and a digestive system. Due to this, they survive approximately two weeks.
To find a mate, the female cecropia moth emits pheromones which the male detects with its sensitive antennae. Male cecropia moths can detect these pheromones from up to a mile away, although a male may fly up to 7 miles while searching for a female. Mating typically begins early in the morning hours and lasts until the evening.
After mating, the female will lay up to one hundred eggs. These eggs are a mottled reddish brown and are usually found on either side of a host leaf. These eggs will eventually hatch into tiny black caterpillars.
There are typically five larval instars (developmental stages), each lasting approximately one week. The first instar larvae are black. Their coloration is due to small black hairs growing from tubercles (small projections) all over their body. These larvae feed upon many common trees and shrubs including maple, birch, and apple. As the caterpillars grow larger into the second larval instar, they become yellow green. During the third, fourth, and fifth instars, the cecropia moth becomes rather large and bluish green. At these final stages, the tubercles become blue, yellow or orange, depending on location on the body, while the black hairs are eventually lost. The caterpillars reach maturity in autumn and are about 4 to 4.5 inches (100 to 110 mm) long.
Once the caterpillars reach maturity, they spin large brown cocoons longways on trees or wooden structures. They will then emerge as adults in the first two weeks of seasonally warm weather in early summer. Hyalophora cecropia moths are univoltine, having only one generation per year.
Upon reaching adulthood, their size is variable. They are usually quite large, with a wingspan of about 5 to 7 inches (130 to 180 mm). The cecropia moth's wings are brownish with red near the base of the forewing. There are crescent-shaped spots of red with whitish centers on all wings, but are larger on the hindwings. All wings have whitish coloration followed by reddish bands of shading beyond the postmedial line that runs longitudinally down the center of all four wings. The body is hairy, with reddish coloring on the anterior, and fading to reddish/whitish. The abdomen has alternating bands of red and white.

WHY SHOULD YOU GRIND YOUR MEAT
As a professional home chef, I can't stress enough the importance of grinding your meat. Why, you ask? Let me share the three compelling reasons that'll make you believe in this culinary practice.
First and foremost, the quality of your ingredients is paramount in cooking.
Grinding your meat ensures you have complete control over the freshness, quality, and cuts you choose. This means you can handpick the best cuts from your local butcher, combining them to create the perfect blend of flavors and textures. The difference in taste will be like night and day compared to pre-ground meat from the store.
Secondly, grinding your meat allows you to create personalized blends that cater to your taste preferences.
You can mix different cuts of meat or even different types of meat to achieve the perfect flavor and texture. This customization opens up a world of possibilities for experimenting with various recipes and discovering new flavor combinations that will delight your taste buds and those of your loved ones.
Furthermore, grinding your meat gives you control over the fat content in your dishes.
Pre-ground meat often contains more fat, which may not align with your dietary preferences or health goals. By grinding your meat at home, you can choose leaner cuts and manage the fat in your meals, ensuring you provide a healthier option for yourself and your family.
Lastly, grinding your meat offers unmatched food safety and cleanliness.
Pre-packaged ground meat can expose you to harmful bacteria due to the way it's processed and stored. By grinding your meat, you minimize the risk of contamination and can ensure proper handling and cleanliness throughout the process. That's peace of mind you can't pay a price on.
Grinding your meat is not just a culinary trend; it's a testament to your commitment to quality, creativity, and safety in the kitchen. It offers a fresher, more personalized, and healthier approach to cooking, elevating your dishes to new heights.
4 FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MEAT GRINDER
When selecting the perfect meat grinder for your home, you should consider a few key factors to ensure you get the best value and performance. This buying guide will discuss essential aspects to help you make an informed decision.
Size and Power
The size and power of a meat grinder are crucial factors to consider when shopping.
A smaller, more compact grinder may be suitable for occasional or smaller households, while a larger, more powerful grinder will be needed for frequent or larger families.
Choosing a grinder with enough power to handle the types and quantities of meat you plan to grind is essential.
Durability and Materials
The materials used to construct a meat grinder can significantly impact its durability and performance. Look for grinders made from high-quality materials, such as stainless steel or heavy-duty cast iron, which can withstand frequent use and offer long-lasting performance.
Additionally, ensure that the grinder's components, such as cutting plates and blades, are made from durable materials that maintain their sharpness and efficiency over time.
Ease of Use and Cleaning
A meat grinder should be easy to assemble, disassemble, and clean to ensure a smooth experience each time you use it. Look for models with dishwasher-safe components or those that can be easily hand-washed.
Additionally, consider grinders with built-in storage compartments for attachments and accessories, making it easier to keep everything organized and ready for use.
Features and Attachments
Some meat grinders have additional features and attachments that enhance their versatility and functionality. These may include sausage stuffing attachments, multiple cutting plates for various grind sizes, and even pasta-making attachments.
Consider the most important features to you and look for a grinder that offers those options.
GRINDING TIPS
Always choose the freshest meat possible.
The taste and texture of your final dish depend significantly on the quality of the ingredients you use. I've found that sourcing meat from a local butcher or farmer's market ensures I use the highest-quality cuts available.
Keep the meat and the grinder components cold before grinding.
Doing so will prevent the fat from melting and the meat from becoming too sticky. This simple step will smooth the grinding process and help you achieve the perfect texture for your dishes.
Cut the meat into small, even pieces before grinding.
This will make the grinding process more efficient and ensure that the final ground meat is consistent in texture. Cutting the meat into 1-inch cubes often works best for most recipes.
Feel free to experiment with different cuts of meat and seasoning combinations.
By experimenting with different cuts of meat, you can learn their unique characteristics, such as fat content, tenderness, and flavor profile. This knowledge will help you create dishes that cater to different preferences, dietary restrictions, and occasions.
Additionally, trying out diverse seasoning combinations can enhance the taste and aroma of your dishes, elevating your culinary skills and impressing your family.
MEAT GRINDER MAINTENANCE
Always clean your meat grinder thoroughly after each use.
This practice ensures hygiene and prevents any buildup of meat particles and fat, which could damage the grinder over time. Disassemble the grinder carefully, and clean each part individually using warm, soapy water.
A gentle brush will help you reach those hard-to-reach spots, leaving your grinder spotless and ready for the next culinary adventure.
After cleaning, thoroughly dry all parts to avoid rust, particularly for metal grinders.

TOP FUEL ACCELERATION PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE This is what 10,000 horsepower does to a top fuel tire at launch.
0 to 100 MPH in .8 seconds (the first 60 feet of the run) 0 to 200 MPH in 2.2 seconds (the first 350 feet of the run) 6 g-forces at the starting line (nothing accelerates faster on land) 6 negative g-forces upon deployment of twin ‘chutes at 300 MPH An NHRA Top Fuel Dragster accelerates quicker than any other land vehicle on earth . . quicker than a jet fighter plane . . . quicker than the space shuttle.

My favorite Tony Stark meta as quoted from my twitter account. Yes, that is timestamped 1 in the morning. I stayed up until 2 writing this. (What else was there to do in May of 2020, really)
Tumblr media
Okay let's start with some basic anatomy. Here's a normal chest x-ray (frontal and lateral) beside unused IM2 concepts for Tony's own x-rays. Please note the placement of the arc reactor as beginning within the 4th intercostal space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please also note that Tony's x-rays are timestamped 2300 hours, which is 11pm. X-rays at 11pm.
As demonstrated in the next image, you will see that the sternum (also known as the manubrium, that long bone in the center) extends well past the 4th intercostal (between the ribs) space, and, indeed, quite possibly lower than the arc reactor itself does.
Tumblr media
Assumption #1: some part of Tony's sternum, if not all of it, was removed to make room for the arc reactor. This is the stupidest possible way I can think of addressing the shrapnel issue, but I digress.
Let's say the reactor is about this big and sits here. Or, at least the metal core.
Tumblr media
Oh, did I forget to mention that the metal core of the arc reactor (the housing unit for the magnet) extends at least 5-6 inches into his chest?
Oh, you want proof?
Tumblr media
Bam. I'll even be generous and say that her fingers are curled and give you four inches, but it's probably closer to five.
Which means that in the x-rays, the reactor should look more like this
Tumblr media
Tony's torso is definitely thicker than that but we're ignoring that, these images never made it past the concept phase.
Anyway, when I mush all this up and account for the fact that it was never supposed to be medically plausible, I'm going to approximate the depth of the cylinder at 4.5 inche, and the surface shape as 2.5-3 inches in diameter. Here's a really good prosthetic image.
Tumblr media
Mm. Look at that 2008 camera quality.
Tony Stark likely did not have any sternum left after IM2. This leads me to assumption number 2: the cartilage that connects the rib ends to the sternum likely grew around the housing unit. It would have provided enough cushion to keep metal away from bone, but OUCH still.
For the removal of the arc reactor in IM3 to be even a little bit logical, one of these two things would have had to happen in that surgery.
1: the housing unit was left in his chest, intact, and capped like a pill botte. Then skin was grafted over the top.
2: he was given an artificial sternum. Not a bone transplant, because he would not want to be dependent on anti-rejection meds. it would likely be some kind of medical grade silicone, something that would mimic the function of an actual sternum. Which is allowing the expansion of the chest cavity to, y'know, breathe.
But at the end of the day, the impossibility of removing the arc reactor isn't what frustrated me so much about IM3. It's that the arc reactor has been a symbol of Iron man, of Tony's identity, transformation, weakness, strengths, since the very beginning of the comics. For seemingly no reason, Shane Black took that from him, and THAT is whaat pisses me off.
Stay turned for the next thread, where I remember soft tissues also exist.

long post ahead. way longer than i thought it was gonna be.
So I found a bunch of official character design scans from the Soul Eater anime, and included were some height charts!
Tumblr media
So I chose one of the height charts to calculate with, adjusted a few characters' standing places (Crona, Soul, Maka, the Thompson sisters) to make them more even with the others, and since there was a 150 cm mark, I knew what I had to do and got to work.
After adjusting the aforementioned characters, I first made some marks for 1 meter and 50 centimeters by measuring the pixels between designated points on the 150cm/0cm lines and labeled these points. Then I determined the approximate height of a centimeter in pixels and rounded that to both the nearest whole pixel and the nearest tenth. (I used the nearest tenth to calculate with) Then I approximated tops of characters' heads, accounting for typical anime hair volume, and made multiple points for characters with super spiky hair (to see how much the spikes add) and Lord Death (because I wasn't sure which point I should use).
Finally I took the difference between the head lines and what pixel of the image was my designated zero, and divided that by the number I calculated to be a centimeter's height in pixels to generate approximate heights. These heights were then rounded to the nearest whole centimeter. However, they seemed off.
Tumblr media
Approximate heights ordered left to right, using 150cm mark as reference:
Black☆Star: 150cm/4'11" (169cm/5'6" including hair spike)
Lord Death: 203cm/6'7" at Point 1, 218cm/7'1" at Point 2, 256cm/8'5" at Point 3
Tsubaki: 166cm/5'5"
Stein: Ok according to this chart he's 194 cm/6'4", but in the NOT! production note he was 210 cm (6'10"). I'm gonna chalk this inconsistency up to differing character designers for the anime adaptations (Yoshiyuki Itou for the original and Satoshi Koike for NOT!) and no known release of character heights from Ohkubo. And I'll still be going with the 210 cm number for Stein's height as it's the only one that's known to have been stated by any staff member. (I double-checked my math and it still checked out within an acceptable margin of error, but there is still the possibility that I was off somewhere in rounding)
Medusa: 172cm/5'8"
Crona: 161cm/5'3"
Soul: 142cm/4'7" (15ocm/4'11" including hair spike)
Maka: 145cm/4'9"
Spirit: 194 cm/6'4"
Death the Kid: 150cm/4'11" (note: his shoes have a slight heel to them so I feel it's reasonable to estimate this despite him being slightly above the 150cm line) (In the NOT! production note he is listed as 158cm/5'2". This can be attributed to the same reasons as the inconsistency with Stein's height)
Patty: 145cm/4'9" with heels, 139cm, 4'7" without. (The NOT! production note lists her as 160cm/5'3")
Liz: 161cm/5'3" with heels, 155cm/5'1" without. (This is also inconsistent with the NOT! production note which lists her as 170cm/5'7". This inconsistency I'll chalk up to the same reasons as Kid, Patty, and Stein)
Sid: 196 cm/6'5"
So all the kids are just absolutely TINY in the anime universe if we go by the mark on this production image.
Here are set 2's numbers, which ignores that 150cm mark and bases the heights off what's in Stein's NOT! production note files, because I was curious as to what numbers that would show: (Note: Kid, Liz, and Patty's numbers may not match that production note because this is enough of a different point in the story that they may have grown) (all heights rounded to nearest whole inch/centimeter)
Tumblr media
Black☆Star: 161cm/5'3"  (182cm/5'11" including hair spike)
Lord Death: 219cm/7'2" at Point 1, 237cm/7'8" at Point 2, 276cm/9'1" at Point 3
Tsubaki: 180cm/5'11"
Stein: 210 cm/ 6'10"
Medusa: 186cm/6'1"
Crona: 174cm/5'9"
Soul: 153cm/5'0" (161cm/5'3" including hair spike)
Maka: 157cm/5'2" in combat boots (because let's be real those are definitely adding an extra inch or two)
Spirit: 210 cm/ 6'10"
Death the Kid: 162cm/5'4" (the 4 centimeter difference from the NOT! info can be attributed to NOT! being a prequel and Kid having grown since then, or a really big margin of error in my calculations)
Patty: 160cm/5'3" with heels, 154cm/5'1" without heels
Liz: 174cm/5'9" with heels, 168cm/5'6" without heels (see Kid's footnote)
Sid: 212cm/6'11"
These heights feel a little more statistically accurate to (mostly) American teenagers, (some were born outside the US but a majority of the kids were), though ranging on the tall side for a few.
However, one time a while ago my brother and I tried to calculate character heights based on the manga post-timeskip using that same Stein height from NOT! as a reference. I redid the calculations using the metric system (because I used the US Imperial system before and that one has way more opportunities for conversion errors) and got this: (it only contains a few characters because Ohkubo's paneling clearly never had full height comparisons in mind)
Tumblr media
Transcription of heights incase my handwriting is unreadable for the characters in this image:
Stein and Spirit: 210cm/ 6'10"
Maka and Kim: 170cm/5'7" (Kim was stated to be 154 cm in NOT!, but considering the timespan and her age, it's perfectly feasible for her to have grown)
Black Star: 170cm/5'7" (177cm/5'10" with hair spike)
Kid and Azusa: 175cm/5'9"
Soul: 181 cm/5'11" (186cm/6'1" with hair spike)
Crona: 176 cm/ 5'9" (also because their neck is so long-looking, I measured that. It is roughly 13cm/5.12")
Jackie: roughly the same height as Crona, give or take a centimeter or two.
I was originally going to calculate Marie, but the proportion of characters shown wasn't enough in that panel to calculate. (with no designated zero, it's tough)
Even though the anime adapts pre-timeskip events, I was a bit suspicious of the height differences. Because there is absolutely no way Crona only grew 2 centimeters from pre-to-post-timeskip, especially if Maka grew 13cm. Look at their relative heights on both sides of the timeskip:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I did a quick Google search on growth rates and compared what a few different websites say, which was that on average (in America, judging by the websites' lack of metric system usage), AFAB people grow around 2.5-4.5 inches per year during puberty (often being closest to 3 inches a year), while AMAB people grow 3-5 inches per year during puberty (often being closest to 4 inches a year). The timing of when these growth spurts occur varies by individual, but considering the canon age ranges of the Soul Eater kids it's safe so say most of them are in the peak growth spurt area.
Comparing these averages to the different sets of data I calculated, and considering inconsistencies such as Stein's height when going off the 150cm mark in that height chart, Crona's relative height to Maka across continuities, and Soul potentially having a growth spurt well over twice the average, I think it's safe to say that as long as the heights relative to other characters are consistent, go nuts.
In conclusion, it's likely that Ohkubo and the anime's character designers, or for that matter, the character designers between the original and spinoff's adaptations, may not have been in close communications when it came to consistency in character heights, even factoring for time differences.
if only Ohkubo or Studio Bones had completely released official character heights then I wouldn’t have calculated this mess

So you wanna be a king (pt4)
orrrr mayyyybe juuust cosplay one since that’s way less responsibilities
Tumblr media
(incidentally, the fabbo shirt’s from redbubble, https://www.redbubble.com/people/midorilied/works/29739636-do-it-for-him-white-text, if @midorilied doesn’t mind me showing it off)
If you’ve followed along thus far then you should have a cloak, jerkin, pants and boots. A fully wearable Graham perfect for romping around the countryside. But it feels incomplete without the accessories, so let’s give those a try.
Part 4: Pouches n Bracers
(Again, these are all just suggestions and a How I Did It from a very novice cosplayer. Disregard all points, or take the ones you like. improvise adapt overcome)
Perhaps the best part about adventure games is the stuff. The bottomless inventory, a random assortment of strange things that all Do A Thing. Graham carries everything from money to badgers to literal humans in his pockets (presumably his mother is a seamstress trained by the gods).
Tumblr media
This...won’t be you. Sorry.
Now, to be fair, I saw a Graham cosplay on tumblr (I’m so sorry, I don’t remember who--does anyone know?) who sewed pockets into their cloak, which is delightful and a very sweet idea!
However, I prefer the swoosh and snap of my cloak, and heavy things like cell phones in your cloak will alter the weight. Something to keep in mind as you decide how to manage your outfit.
Tumblr media
(forgive the blur--I haven’t been able to get a still of what it looks like when swooshing. Perhaps now I’ve got real boots I’ll do another gifset of it)
Thus, all my phone, money, keys, and backup freckles (e.g., liquid eyeliner) must live in Graham’s belt pouches instead of cloak pockets. Lord knows what Graham actually keeps in his pouches, game-wise. Squirrel snacks, maybe, to avoid repeating the fiasco from Tourney Day?
Tumblr media
This time I followed a pattern. I know, weird, right?
I wanted functionality, but I wanted them to be slim and simple, too. I found a guy on YouTube, and he comes with a .pdf template pattern in his video description! It’s super detailed, easy to follow, and better than me rambling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPhQlaI_UX4
Tumblr media
Three years later, they’re starting to look a touch tired. I used a plain dark brown fabric (was it broadcloth?). Half a yard is plenty. If it’s semi-close in color your your belt, ideal. I made two sizes, two large for phone and makeup for touchups, and one small for keys and money. The large ones are 3″ wide and 5.5″ tall, and the small one is 2.5″ by 4.5″, but size them to whatever important things must be on your body at all time.
Tumblr media
I added snap clasps to keep them shut (never know when you’ll be pounced by goblins, or trip over a crack in the sidewalk), and I found some plain silver buttons to sew over where the snaps sit--added bonus, hides my sloppy stitchwork. I took some of the leftover suede rope from the jerkin for the front--my ugliest secret is that it’s really horrible looking super glue dribbled everywhere. Hasn’t moved in 3 years, tho. /victory fist bump
I turned the corners of the front flaps so I wouldn’t have square tops. I didn’t trim off the excess fabric since I thought keeping extra weight in the corners would help keep the flaps down. You could always sew in another layer of something sturdier if you didn’t want the flaps to curl over time--it’s probably worth it. It does make a difference.
Tumblr media
So, in doing this half-tutorial, I’ve just realized that Graham’s actual model has three pouches of various sizes on his left side only which means I’ve been wearing and drawing him wrong since day one. So. That’s cool. themoreyouknow.gif
Tumblr media
(still not changing anything tho; I like keeping my phone on my right side)
Bracers!
Graham’s an archer. So, he’s got bracers on his forearms to protect himself. (presumably his rippling muscles are protection enough since he stops wearing them between his 30s and 70s.)
Tumblr media
We have the same problem here as with the jerkin: the bracers seem practically sewn onto his arm. And that’s maybe doable, but I’m mortal, not digital, and I want this to be comfortable and also easy to remove. Now, unfortunately, my method loses the black bands he has on his bracer underbellies--they don’t seem to fit. If you have a nice solution, let me know.
Get yourself a ruler, paper, a scrap of elastic band, a sheet or two of stiff felt (probably like this stuff: https://www.amazon.com/Darice-Stiff-inches-5-Pack-FLT-0331/dp/B00KNAKJH6), and all the leftovers from your jerkin.
Measure around your wrist--mine’s 6″, so we’ll use that. Draw a 6″ line on a piece of paper, find the center of the line, mark it. Measure how long down your arm you want the bracer to go. I like 8 and a quarter inches myself (make it as long as you can without the bracer edge rubbing your inner elbow because that gets real old real fast). From the center mark of your wrist line, make a straight line down (a grid is helpful here to keep it straight). At the point where your bracer stops, measure around your arm: I got 9″. Find the halfway mark of your base arm line, add that to the paper. Connect the corners. It should look approximately something like this:
Tumblr media
Cut out and test your design to make sure it’s comfortable (you want to forget you’re wearing these. keep them away from your elbow. f’reals). Cut the shape out of your stiff felt, and cut out your brown fabric leftover from your jerkin, with a margin all around so you can fold it over and sew (I did an inch I think, because I’m a coward). For the hand guard, I did half my wrist (3″), then measured my hand to see how high it had to be to just scrape the knuckle. For my hand, that’s about 3″, give or take. Curve it, test it, cut it out of felt and brown alike, and cut out some extra brown to cover the inside of the hand guard too, as you don’t want to see any white against your hand.
Fold the loose edges over the felt and sew it down along the marked places:
Tumblr media
Make little snips in the hem of the hand guard hem as you go to achieve that tight curve.
I was nervous about combining the two pieces as I needed easy wrist flexibility. The two lines that aren’t hemmed I left “raw” and sewed the brown edges together as was, so that there’s no stiff felt against the wrist at all.
Tumblr media
Another secret: my bracer grommets aren’t the same as my jerkin grommets--they’re much smaller, like 7mm, because I’d planned on making my jerkin with this smaller size earlier to replicate Graham’s tighter lacing but it didn’t work out--the larger ones from your jerkin work fine.
It’s the same process as the jerkin, too. Every inch from the wrist to the elbow gets a grommet, plus its corresponding partner. A-likea so:
Tumblr media
The next part might be optional. I cut another piece of brown about the same size as the bracer body again, and sewed the edges along the inside, just past the grommets, so that when you wear the bracer, you don’t see the shirt beneath your laces. It also gives you a place to hide the loose ends of your suede rope once it’s tied into place. Probably optional.
Tumblr media
Graham’s bracers have definition near the elbow, and I was annoyed that I couldn’t find a way to fit in the large black bands without messing up the simplicity of my pull on/pull off system, so to reference it I found thin black trim and sewed it along the bottom hem, just below the last grommet.
Tumblr media
Okay, lace it with the suede rope and try it for fit. You may notice the hand guard is a bit unwilling to stay attached. Get the super glue, and--
no wait please don’t do that
let’s just make an elastic ring instead
Tumblr media
My elastic was white: I colored it with a brown marker so it wasn’t as jarring if anyone caught sight of it. Sew it into your existing hemline, wherever it feels natural to wear it as a ring on your middle finger. A strip of fabric or trim might work as well, but the elastic makes it easy to pull on.
I desperately need to update my gray wristbands with real rope. This is trim, and I do not like it. But it was free, at the bottom of my cosplay bin, and I’m so tired of spending money on this costume.........anyway, loop the rope of choice three times around your wrist, sew it into a closed loop to avoid dealing with knots and bows, and tug the whole thing on and off over your hand. pls do not make it too tight.
Tumblr media
And that’s looking like a proper cosplay. Just a few more accessories and also the hat. I assume everyone just wants the adventuring hat, but if there’s any interest in the crown, I could toss that in too, maaaayyyybbeeee?

Pierogi w. Potato Filling
Preparation time: Cooking time: Serves/Makes: 100 pierogi
Ingredients
The Dough
7 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling and dusting
1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt
2 whole eggs
1/3 cup sour cream
2 ½ to 3 cups room temperature water
The Potato Filling
2.25kg of russet potatoes, peeled and diced into 2 inch pieces
9 tbsp of unsalted butter
2 1/4 cups onion, diced
2 1/4 tsp salt
a bit of black pepper
4.5 tbsp chopped parsley
2 1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese
Additional Ingredients
2 tablespoon of melted butter for every 25 pierogi (to coat them so they don’t stick)
Onions – approximately ½ pound thinly sliced onions for each 25 pierogi
2 tablespoons butter for every ½ pound of onions
Sour cream, as needed to serve with the savory pierogi
Method
On a clean work surface, place all of the 7½ cups of flour into a pile. Stir in salt then make a valley in the center of the flour. Crack both eggs into center along with sour cream. With a fork, start stirring the eggs and sour cream into the flour pulling the edges toward the center. Then gradually add the water a little at a time as you continue to stir with a fork. You may not use all of the water so after 2 cups check texture and slowly incorporate another half cup of water. (Our dough was a perfect consistency at 2½ cups and we did not use the remaining ½ cup.) The texture should be soft and sticky to the touch.
(A scraper like this is helpful for this next step so you can scrape and mold the dough as it is floured and rolled.) Sprinkle flour over the top of the dough ball and surrounding counter and with the scraper (or a flat spatula if you don’t have one), scrape dough from counter over onto floured surface and continue this process adding flour as needed until you have a soft, pliable easy-to-handle dough that does not stick to the rolling pin.
Using a rolling pin, roll the dough mass out to 1/16th inch thin. If you roll it out any thicker, your yield will be less than 100.
As you roll, keep flouring the counter under the dough so when it is completely rolled out, none of the dough mass sticks to your counter.
Using a 3 inch round cookie or biscuit cutter, dip the cutter in flour if needed then cut out the circles as close to each other as possible. After filling this batch, gather up the scraps and roll back out and cut more circles. Finally roll up the last of the scraps and cut one last time. The dough is soft enough to get rolled out three times but no more. Also try to keep the dough covered with a slightly damp cloth to keep the dough from drying out.
The final count should be approximately 100 circles. See last step for filling, boiling and frying.
Boil potatoes in salted water for 5-10 minutes until tender, then drain and place back into the pan. Heat over medium just long enough to evaporate any liquid left in the pan and to dry out the potatoes. Remove to a bowl and set aside.
In the same pan, melt butter over medium heat and add onion, salt and pepper and cook 3-5 minutes until tender. Remove from heat and add parsley and potatoes and using a potato masher, mash mixture to somewhat fine. Stir in cheddar cheese and set mixture aside. If not filling right away, refrigerate until needed.
To fill each pierogi, follow the recipe for the filling and divide the filling between that number of circles.
Place the filling (between ¾ and 1 ounce depending on the filling type) in the center spreading it out into the shape of an oval. Have a small cup of water close by and with a pastry brush, lightly wet the outside of the circle half way around. Then lift the dough circle in your hand and pull the edge of the dry side to the edge of the wet side together in the center and pinch tight. Then work from the center out and pinch the rest closed, poking any filling back in as you go. Set the finished pierogi on a parchment-lined sheet pan.
Place a medium to large pot of water on to boil as you finish the remaining pierogi. Have a large sauté pan on a burner with the melted butter on medium low.
Once you have made as many as you plan on making, place about ten at a time into the boiling water (checking to make sure that they haven’t stuck to the bottom of the pot) and boil until they float (about 2-3 minutes). Then cook for an additional minute and remove with a strainer. Immediately add to pan with melted butter. All you are doing with this step is coating them in butter so they don’t stick to each other. Toss in the pan of butter for about 30 seconds and remove to a platter. Repeat for all of the pierogi you intend to cook.
In a large skillet over medium high heat, melt butter and add onions and cook for about 4-5 minutes until slightly browned. Remove to a bowl and set aside.
Using the same pan over medium heat, melt butter and add cooked pierogi. Cook flipping occasionally until browned on both sides, about 5-8 minutes.
Serve savory pierogi with sour cream and sautéed onions.
A/N
I’ve been told by many people how good pierogi is and how they remember mothers, aunts, and grandmothers making it for them growing up and how special the dish is to them, so it’s definitely something that I’ll have to try out (at the time of typing up this recipe - I’m very eager
I’ve also been told 100 is A LOT but the original recipe (by Jack and Martha) talked about making such a large batch as a family together and then freezing them for throughout the year which is such a great idea
The dough isn’t something that can be made ahead and then filled later as it will dry out! To do this, freeze flat on parchment lined sheet pans and once frozen, place in zipper sealed gallon bags and place back in the freezer. When ready to use, follow the instructions to boil and fry.
The dough makes approximately 100 three-inch pierogi, if dough is rolled to 1/16th inch thick
Although this recipe provides enough filling for 100 potato pierogi, it may be better to make less potato filling and find some other fillings, unless you really love the potato filling
