Do Sidhen know Halbarad well, both being Rangers and all?
Well, Halbarad is the second in command of the dunedain, the highest rank there is apart from Aragorn. That makes Sidhen his subordinate.
Sidhen always found him too strict, sometimes boring, and quite frightening at times. It's always vigilance and duty with him. She can't even remember the last time she saw him laugh. That doesn't mean she doesn't respect him, though. She follows his every order without fail. Maybe... What's one evening break from patrolling duty to drink in one of the inns of the Shire? What the commander doesn't know can't hurt him. Until he finds out and he makes her do double patrolling. That’s where the fun really starts.
I feel like their relationship is the same as a pupil and their high-school maths teacher. You respect them, they’re a great teacher, but maths is so hard and you’re falling asleep in class.

what’s your underlying motif?
the home
whether it’s your warm embrace, your unwavering reliability, your smile that says “welcome back”, your motif is the home. your the equivalent to coming out of the rain to the fire on and your slippers waiting by the door. your uncanny way of making people feel alright, you’re treasured in these trying times. i respectfully request you take care of yourself, the world will never been as kind to you as you are to it. anne lammott said “lighthouses don't go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining” and though unconventional, lighthouses are inhabited and your cup runs over with generosity. because you probably don’t hear it enough, thank you.

Neethi ft the Trevelyan Cousins
From the top,
Satyajit Trevelyan, son of Ashutosh and Harini Trevelyan, joined the Templar Order at the age of fourteen and has faithfully remained with them, through the events at Therinfal. His whereabouts were unknown until two years after the events of Inquisition, when he showed up with symptoms of red lyrium poisoning.
Remya Trevelyan, sister to Satyajit, had planned to devote her life to charity in the cloister, only to have the Headship of the House fall unexpectedly to her. She married Lord Everand Markus of Nevarra, strengthening the alliance between the two families.
Shilpa Trevelyan, Senior Enchanter to the Ostwick Circle of Magi, and the eldest of the three, is a prolific yet controversial scholar, and rumors suggest that she toys with magic beyond her ken. Despite the Chantry's open condemnation, she carries out her highly secretive work into the safe use of blood magic. However, she has now turned her attention to a study on reversing red lyrium poisoning in order to cure her brother.
Neethi Trevelyan, daughter to Shakit and Indira Trevelyan, former Commander of Forces to King Sidhen of Kalghat, and Inquisitor to all of Thedas. Having lived and nearly died out of Ostwick for all her life, her association the House was only tangential...until it wasn't.

As Lothrin works closely with the Dúnedain, does she know Sidhen? If so, are they close friends or just acquaintances?
[Here you go], anon :)

SIDHEN OF THE DÚNEDAIN - a ranger of the North Downs > Duty, honor, sacrifice, to whatever end. We should perform our duty, unfaltering. Dear to my heart are the sun-kissed hills of the Shire, and through many trials I would go to see them protected.

Sunflowers. // Great friendship is there between the hobbit-folk and the wandering rangers, and when a hobbit-lass is rescued by two of their number, a reward is due for their tall deed.
“Another lass appeared before them. Older she was and learned she seemed and her gaze held thirteen autumns. She stood quiet, and in her eyes there was an echo, a call to the times when her kin had lived east of the Hithaeglir. For she held a love for books and scholarly pursuits, and often would she walk the fields of Oatbarton, scouting for any piece of history that she may touch and see.

Do Lothrin and Sidhen often travel together or interact? If so, would you say they are close friends or just acquaintances?
Somewhere in-between I'd say? It's Sidhen's job after all to travel all the time since she's a messenger, she can never stay put in one spot for long. Lothrin is more static, and she prefers to stay in one location for far longer rather than keep travelling around. I'd say it's a cordial friendship, the kind you see in Tolkien's works a lot, but definitely not best friends or anything. They don't have very much in common.

"Créa, were you to choose three of our past rulers to accompany you in battle, who would you chose? Me? Valandil for he reigned when his father fell to the south and that takes courage. Aranarth, for he was no king, but first of our chieftains. Heavy must his heart have been at the death of his father, and for that I shall add him to my list. Then, bravest of all is Arassuil for he stood against the orcs during the Long Winter."

For a moment she stood there, flustered at the sudden question thrust upon her. She had not been expecting it whatsoever, and she listened to the thorough reply the other woman gave, shifting uncomfortably.
It wasn’t as though it was asked with malice; they were of similar age and both naturally curious. But such a question reminded her that she had not been raised with the extensive history and knowledge of the Dúnedain, and especially not about their long line of leaders. Anxiety twisted her stomach, still not nearly as learned as the many who were here, and only furthered her worries of being an outsider, despite her blood. She would have to study much harder to avoid this in the future.
Tumblr media
“I-I, well-” she stammered, already off to a wonderful start- she was not happy to be put on the spot like this, and she felt the warmth on her cheeks. “I guess I’d agree with Aranarth, and have him in battle.” Names! They all started with ara-, and yet so stressed was she she could not recall, and she hastily packed the crate she had been filling with food before taking it up into her arms, any excuse to cover for her floundering.
“I’m sorry, Sidhen, but I’m in the middle of work and really need to get this to Gelirwen.” It was true, at the very least. “I’ll think on my answer later, okay?”

What is it Sidhen envy the Elves? Immortality or something else entirely? Besides Númenor, I've always found the concept of jealousy for the immortal races to be a tad unexplored in Tolkien's works. I mean, who wouldn't be jealous of others being given immortality when you were not on the basis of your birth alone? Either way, it's an interesting character trait! :)
I’m sorry to disappoint you, it’s not the immortality, it’s their their clothes :)))) (and maybe their societal structure too) I had a passage in “By the Fire” about this:
“ Do you know how I’ve never worn one of those fancy dresses, silk ones, like the women of Gondor wear? I wonder how it’s like to walk all day in them, instead of this garb.” Her arms raised, trying to emphasize her poor garments.
[...] He (Toram) would have liked some fine clothes, like elvish garbs.”
The absolute canonical information we have about the dunedain is that they are “few and scattered” and live in small settlements throughout Eriador. Arnor has been destroyed, Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur have been completely eviscerated. The dunedain have no huge settlement to call home. They have no Minas Tirith, they have no Edoras, no Imladris to go home to, when the fighting is done. All they have are tiny, hidden settlements throughout Eriador and chieftains that fall too young.
From an outsider perspective, the life of the dunedain truly seems bleak. For generations they have been forced to fight against the shadows of Angmar, their young people dying, their hope broken (until Aragorn came). Were it not for them, Eriador would have long fallen.
Quite funny that the moment the dunedain form the Grey Company and ride south, leaving Eriador defenseless, is the moment the pieces fall into place for the Scouring of the Shire to happen.
Coming back to Sidhen. Comparing her thankless duty to the luxury elves seem to live into, made Sidhen quite envious. They have Lindon and Imladris to call home. Why can’t the dunedain live in a serene mountain valley or a beautiful harbor? Why do they have to wear linen and itchy wool, when the elves adorn themselves with the most beautiful jewelry and dresses made of silk. The dunedain don’t have the luxury of having “Halls of Song” and artisans that fashion swords with jeweled pummels. In her eyes it just seems that her people struggle so much, while others just get to live their lives free of the shadow.
That doesn’t mean she doesn’t respect her duty. She is one of the most ardent voices and people remember her by her famous words “We can’t question our duty. We can only perform it.”
Why is she jealous on the people of Gondor? Well, they have a highly structured society. They have well defined regions and an administrative capital. Their documents are safe and well in the archives of Minas Tirith, compared to how the northern dunedain lost everything they had when Fornost fell. They have a well defined nobility, military, working class and so on. Not that she doesn’t understand the fact that they are the only wall against Mordor and that their country has been ravaged by a plague and by dynastic battles of power.
Why can’t the elves come and help more? Sure, Elladan and Elrohir are around all the time. But two out of so many elves? This is the phenomenon I was trying to counteract with Lothrin and with my musings about various elves from Lindon and Imladris coming to help on a frequent basis.
I believe these negative feelings simply come from a feeling of powerlessness. She just wishes her people didn’t have to always watch their backs and always patrol and always fight and all these feelings of worry and anxiety simply found the elves as their target. Quite human feelings if you ask me.

This is perhaps a macabre question, but have you given any thought to how your mortal characters pass away? Illness or old age? Surrounded by loved ones? Who inherites Sidhen's brooch if she has no children? Is Lothrin present when Giznik eventually passes away?
For everyone else, I have a post about the fate of my immortal characters here.
I’ll make a bullet list:
As it may be, from all her friends Sidhen died last. First, Toram died on Pelennor, then Maradan died some years after Annúminas was rebuilt, happy and content in Bree, Melilot and Adamanta died of old age in the Shire and her wife Mara died 40 years after they were wedded, well into her 70s. Her brooch was inherited by her niece, as Sidhen had no children. Sidhen’s sister married a scholar and had 3 children: 2 daughters and a son. The son became a scholar too, like his father, the first daughter became a crafts-woman and the second was interested in the politics of the kingdom, so she worked towards getting a seat on the council of the north. She was the one to inherit her aunt’s brooch and wears it proudly. It is quite sad that Sidhen had to live more than 20 yeas alone on her farm east of the Shire, after the death of her wife. She passed peacefully and was found somedays later by one of her hobbit neighbors from Buckland. They informed the Mayor of the Shire, who informed the Council in Annúminas, who in turn informed Sidhen’s family in Esteldin, who finally travelled and buried her in a small ceremony.
Melilot didn’t have any children as she is ace and told her husband long before their marriage that she has no wish to raise one. Adamanta married her childhood sweetheart and decided to adopt, as I’m pretty sure after the Scouring of the Shire there must have been some orphans around. Everything that the sisters had, went to the child. Both of them died happy and content in Oatbarton.
Giznik died quite old, but sadly not by a natural cause. He was part of the dwarven expedition that was trying to salvage whatever possible from the ruins of Nogrod and Belegost. Both cities lay destroyed long into the Second and Third Age, the taint of the great enemy still present on them. While mining there, Giznik inhaled some poisonous spores from some ancient relic of the enemy, and died shortly. Neither his wife, nor his children had a chance to say their goodbyes. He was buried with all the reverence of a dwarven hero. Lothrin, who lived in Lindon at the time, was informed of this development, but sadly by the time she travelled to the northern parts of Ered Luin, Giznik had long been buried. She paid her respects to her friend and his family.
Balna was a famed jeweler and she had many a great apprentices throughout her life. Her dying wish was to be cremated and her ashes turned into a most beautiful jewel. Her apprentices turned her into a splendid diamond, that was the crowning beauty of a golden necklace. The necklace was long worn by the dwarven royalty of the Orocarni mountains.
Calnedon suffered greatly towards his old age due to his aching joints. The fact that he was living in Dol Amorth didn’t help much either, as the sea salt present in the air only worsened his condition. He lived well into an old age, but one day slipped on some seaweed-covered rocks near the beachside and hurt himself greatly. He was rushed to the infirmary of Dol Amorth and managed to say his goodbyes to his children and wife before dying of internal cranial bleeding.
Lileyn fought her entire life for the betterment of the relations between the Rohirrim and the Dunlending, but sadly died into her 60s due to a stroke. The first stroke she had, she managed to survive but the second stroke proved to be fatal.
