彼女ほど優しい人はいない。 かのじょ ほど やさしい ひと は いない。 No one is as kind as her.

例文②

英語の文法は日本語ほど難しくありません。 えいご の ぶんぽう は にほんご ほど むずかしく ありません。 English grammar is not as difficult as Japanese grammar.

例文③

日本ほど治安のいい国はあまりない。 にほん ほど ちあん の いい くに は あまり ない。 There are not many countries with public safety as good as Japan's.

例文④

N１の試験問題を見てみたが、思ったほど難しくなさそうだ。 N１の しけん もんだい を みて みた が、おもった ほど むずかしく なさそう だ。 I looked at the N1 exam questions, but they didn't seem to be as difficult as I thought they would be.

How to Use

Noun + ほど + Verb (ない form) Noun + ほど + Adjective (ない form)

考えれば考えるほどわからなくなる。 かんがえれば かんがえる ほど わからなく なる。 The more I think about it the less I understand.

例文②

勉強すればするほど、日本語が上手になりますよ。 べんきょう すれば する ほど、にほんご が じょうず に なります よ。 The more you study, the more your Japanese will improve.

例文③

立場が上になればなるほど、責任は重くなる。 たちば が うえ に なれば なる ほど、せきにん は おもく なる。 The higher the position, the heavier the responsibility.

例文④

語学の勉強を始めるなら、若ければ若いほどいい。 ごがく の べんきょう を はじめる なら、わかければ わかい ほど いい。 The younger you start learning a language, the better.

例文⑤

パソコンは操作が簡単なら簡単なほどいいです。 パソコン は そうさ が かんたん なら かんたん なほど いい です。 The easier a computer is to use, the better.

How to Use

Verb (ば conditional) + same Verb + ほど な-adjective + なら + same な-adjective + なほど い-adjective + いければ + same い-adjective + ほど

～ほど・JLPT N3 文法

～ほど

① 大体～; indicates that ～ is an approximate number

② ～程度、くらい; used in the form A ほど B to explain the degree of B by giving an example or metaphor with A; in particular, it is often used to emphasize that the degree of B is extremely high

例文①

日本に来て5年ほど経ちました。 にほん に きて ５ねん ほど たちました。 It has been about five years since I came to Japan.

今年ほど雨の降った年はなかった。 ことし ほど あめ の ふった とし は なかった。 There hasn't been a year in which it has rained more than this one.

Note: In the previous two sentences, ぐらい／くらい can be substituted for ほど in more casual speech.

Note: You cannot use ～ほど for a specific time, only for an approximate time period; you must use ぐらい／くらい or ごろ for specific time.

3時ほどに出発します。✖ 3時ぐらいに出発します。〇 3時ごろに出発します。〇

例文②

今日は昼ごはんを食べる時間がないほど忙しかった。 きょう は ひるごはん を たべる じかん が ない ほど いそがしった。 I was so busy today that I didn't have time to eat lunch.

死ぬほどのどがかわいている。 しぬ ほど のど が かわいて いる。 I'm so thirsty I could die.

慣用表現 (Fixed Expressions)

Expressions emphasizing the extreme degree of something:

信じられないほど～ It was so ～ I couldn't believe it.

びっくりするほど～ I was so shocked it was ～

驚くほど～ I was so surprised it was ～

死ぬほど～ It was so ～ I could have died.

Expressions indicating large amounts of something:

山ほど～ A mountain of ～

数えきれないほど～ An endless amount of ～

Other specific set expressions:

耳にタコができるほど聞いた。 to be told something so often that you get calluses in your ears

口がすっぱくなるほど言った。 to say something so often that you become blue in the face

足が棒になるほど疲れた。 to become so exhausted your legs feel like wood

のどからてが出るほど欲しい。 to want something so badly that a hand nearly reaches out of your throat to grab it

顔から火が出るほど恥ずかしい。 to be so embarrassed that your face bursts into flame
