yesss lemme ramble!! tagging @daughter-of-melpomene for this too, since i already talked about fi in the discord.

okay, so like i said in fi’s intro post, she is a royal bitch. literally. princess fiametta topazia cherubini, the second-born daughter and the 'spare heir' if you listen to the whispers around her family's kingdom. her older sister, the crown princess dianora violente, is a picture perfect princess and has been prepped to take over as queen since she was a child. fi, meanwhile, has always had a less-tight leash when it came to her parents.

fi's life was all garden parties and sunshine and not attending her lessons, even at her parents' behest; she was always kind of performing, whether it be the rebellious princess or the garden party snob or whatever role was necessary to fit in with her peers. since she was never expected to have to take over a ruling role, her parents kind of dropped the ball with her while they focused on her older sister. so she was kind of always just doing whatever the hell she wanted, since nobody really seemed to care anyway. she's very much the embodiment of her name, 'fiametta' meaning 'little fiery one'.

she was childhood friends with kaya, since their parents were friends and fi's parents often paid kaya's for ships. fi, of course, comes to celebrate kaya's 18th birthday where she first meets the straw hats. she's known of usopp for a while, but they're not close and if fi was a little bit in love with kaya and thus a little bit jealous of usopp, that's nobody's business. when usopp brings the straw hats to kaya's birthday dinner, fi does admittedly refer to them as 'riffraff' - though not in front of them - even before she finds out that they're actually real pirates.

kuro wanted to get fi to leave before nightfall, because even he knows that he can't risk killing an actual princess in the same way he can kill a bunch of pirates and a sick girl, but fi insists on staying overnight. that night is her first taste of pirate excitement, even if it is terrifying.

a few weeks after she returns home, her parents inform her of a marriage proposal they've secured for her, one that will join two 'fighting-but-not-yet-warring' families. they had refused to offer their crown princess' hand in marriage, unwilling to allow the other family's son to become king of their lands, so fi was offered instead since she is already of age. fi takes it for what it is, since there's little she can do. she's kind of always known it would be what was expected of her, that she would be some bargaining chip in her parents' politics. she's just pleased that her betrothed - prince hyacinthe - is handsome.

so, she's sent off on a royal ship with a couple of her handmaids and a crew of her father's kingsmen to go get married. halfway between her land and her betrothed's, their ship is attacked by pirates and fi is captured. it's the first time she's ever been offended by being called 'the spare', and the first time she actually realises she is 'worth less' than her sister. a ransom is sent out for the princess' 'safe return home', fi thinks it's a paltry amount to demand for her life and gets even more offended.

the straw hats discover the ransom and go to rescue her (much to nami and zoro's annoyance since fi isn't on the best of terms with either of them). sanji, at this point, has joined the crew. the strawhats, of course, succeed in rescuing fi and head off to return her home. fi and sanji obviously flirt the entire time, but she also gets a chance to actually get to know luffy and usopp and the adventures they've had since kaya's birthday.

after getting home, fi insists that the straw hats stay and enjoy a reward for rescuing her. when she's finally left alone to her own thoughts, she realises how unhappy - and how underappreciated and ignored - she's been for years. so, days later, when the straw hats are preparing to leave, fi practically demands that they take her with them. after the initial bitchiness, she lets her facade down and actually has a moment of sincerity where she confesses how unhappy she's been, how she's never been more than just the overlooked 'spare heir', and that she doesn't even truly know who she is. she's still a total priss for a long time even after joining the straw hats, but she eventually grows out of it.

i've been thinking of giving her a devil fruit that she stole from her family's treasury before leaving, but i haven't been able to work all the wrinkles out yet. i wanted to do something with fire, since her name does mean fire and it would suit her, but since there's already a devil fruit surrounding fire, i was thinking something more with sparks maybe? or candles? or bombs, i've been thinking of giving her bombs as a signature weapon.

the very generous and talented @auxiliarydetective agreed to do this with me because i Cannot Draw Dresses... so I sketched the bodies, then Aux did the dresses and lineart, and I finished it off with the colouring and shading! Top 5 themes to use in your writing?

There probably are themes in my stories, themes that show up frequently, but I've very rarely put them in there on purpose tbh.

Okay, let's see if I can think of five themes.

Expectations, especially from friends and family. Peter usually bears the brunt of that, but Justus and Bob also get their share occasionally, and so does Skinny, except he's on the other side of the coin - he's the one who has already successfully shaken off any expectations.

Made For Each Other couples. It's cheesy af, esp for someone who doesn't even feel romantic attraction or likes relationships, but it's definitely a theme that some people are Right for each other (mostly Peter/Skinny and Cotta/Hugenay get this part) while others are Wrong for each other (Peter and Kelly usually, or in timing specifically Cotta and Nancy)

Loyalty (& devotion) - I blame this one on my MorMor past, and am currently living it mostly through the Mafia AU, but this also applies to Skinny/Peter - being fully loyal and devoted to a partner or ideal is definitely a Theme with me.

Belonging - ties in with the last two, the theme that characters simply Belong in certain places, with certain people, and can't be happy without it.

Death as a last refuge - I have been easing off this because I'm barely ever suicidal anymore, but it does still crop up every once in a while, and in the past it's definitely been a major theme, especially for Skinny.

Hope that's a satisfying answer? (for someone studying literature i definitely still don't have as firm a grip on Themes as I should have.)

❝ In what she considered to be the ultimate, terrible tribute to her name, Lark had been living most of her life like a bird in a cage. First, her cage had been the mansion in Albatross Town in which she had lived as a child, alongside her parents, the town’s governors, who upon realizing their daughter’s natural talent for singing had trotted her out to perform in front of their fellow government officials from the time she was as young as seven. Then, after her parents had passed away from illness when she was still young, her cage had transformed into the embrace of World Government officials, who, remembering her from those parties in her childhood home, had thrust a guitar into her hands and forced her to travel around all four Blues, singing hollow songs about how good and just the World Government and the Marines were for crowds of the Marines themselves.

And even more than she hated being trotted around the world like a show pony at the Government’s whim, Lark hated the music she was forced to perform - and how she was kept from even learning about the music that truly interested her. From the time she was very young, just starting out in her role as the World Government’s little songstress, Lark had been fascinated with the songs pirates sang, the odes to the horizon and life on the high Blues that they would sing on their ships and in taverns when the moon was high in the sky. She ached to hear all of the pirate songs that had ever existed, to fill the songwriting notebooks she kept in secret with their notes and lyrics and perhaps even write one of her own. But since her Government handlers had always kept such a close watch on her, steering her away from any music that was not her approved setlist for performances, she was forced to constantly escape for a few hours whenever she could and fill her notebooks with whatever scraps of songs she could overhear spilling from pubs or could persuade a sailor to sing for her and kept those scribbled words close to her heart, longing for the day when she could burst out of her cage and finally submerge herself in the music she truly wanted to sing.

Finally, after so many years of waiting and wanting and playing the part of the World Government’s little songbird no matter how much she hated it, Lark was given her opportunity for freedom in the form of Monkey D. Luffy and his newfound, ragtag little crew of pirate hopefuls. After seeing one of Lark’s shows and somehow seeing through her public persona to the desperate trapped bird she was underneath, Luffy had approached her with an offer to run away and join his little crew, an offer which Lark could not do anything but accept. Snatching her chance to escape and holding on tight, Lark had sailed away with the Straw Hat crew carrying nothing but her guitar, a few of her favorite dresses, and her beloved notebooks, more than ready to sail the open water and be exposed to the songs she had been longing to hear for so long.

But, of course, the World Government is not willing to let their prized bird fly free for too long, and in addition to evading angry fishmen, keeping their swordsman from dying after he picks a fight he has no chance of winning, and trying to keep a terrifying clown from sending them to their deaths, the Straw Hats must also deal with the threat of a determined Marine Admiral who wants to arrest their captain and has received orders to bring Lark back to his employers. But what everyone who has ever kept Lark captive has failed to realize is that she is much stronger and more determined than she seems - and if she, her newfound friends, and the charming chef who lost his heart to her the first time he heard her sing have anything to say about it, this songbird will be dead before she will be forced into a cage again. ❞

First, I love your artwork! It's just lovely

Your pic of Louis and Trap made me grin like a dummy. It was cute and also very in character for them! Absolutely fantastic!

It also made me think of other duos, like Hawk and Hogan or Radar showing Kinch some newer gadgets, and them going ham (lol punny) over communications. I think Margaret and Tiger would also be immediate bffs. Maybe Flagg and Hochstetter absolute losing their already unhinged minds 🤣

But also Newkirk and Klinger bonding over tailoring and crossdressing. I think they'd be fast friends honestly. They've both got that kind of scrapper background with hearts of gold.

I can see their first meeting, when they're both dressed, going something like

Newkirk: You're absolutely loony

Max: Thanks, I try. Hey nice dress

Newkirk: Thanks, mate.

So thanks for the inspiration. But I think I'm losing my mind over the whole thing so I'll stop now lol.

Yes yes yes! I absolutely adore the idea of Newkirk and Klinger bonding, it would be such a chaotic duo! And Kinch and Radar would be charming. Kinch has such a calm energy, I think Radar would really enjoy chatting with him and Kinch would love to see how things have advanced.

Oddly enough, I kinda feel like Hogan might actually get along with someone like Potter rather than Hawkeye... career military, both served in WWII, really competent leaders...

Hogan and Hawk definitely feel like the obvious two to shove together, but I feel it would have the potentially of going bad pretty easily... If both are in a relaxed situation they might have a lot of fun playing off each other (card games between them would be a blast I think) but if it's at all serious I think Hawkeye's lack of militarism and respect for authority might drive Hogan up the wall xD Hogan is definitely a goofball who gets along with goofballs, but he still expects his men to fall into line when push comes to shove. If the situation is serious, then it might take a little bit for Hogan to recognize and respect Hawkeye's own personal type of hard work, professionalism and respect since it's pretty different from Hogan's own.

Flagg and Hochstetter would absolutely destroy each other and I would be on board to watch that

2. Talk about a favorite comment you received.

I can't just choose one comment of all the comments I've gotten :O xD But recently, very much "up there" are @takealookintheback's comment on Blue Moon (because that story was A Lot of work, and while I'm used to Cotta/Hugenay stories getting less feedback, that just means i'm even happier about getting responses on them that was such a lovely comment!) and @crazy-walls' comment on Meine Sünde, particularly the last line ("Und jup. Das Ende gab dann noch unerwartet feels, and now I'm grumpy again because I love them both and want them to be happy but also gestures violently at everything xD") because it made me laugh xD

8. Talk about any friends/connections you've made as a fic writer.

Surprisngly many? Like, I've never been good at making friends, even less so making online friends, at least during my rpg times, but this time it somehow really worked out for me. Maybe because of the shared enthusiasm, maybe because it's simply easier to make connections when you can start by commenting on someone's story, but I've definitely made more friends in fandom than in real life in the last four years. And I've even got to meet three of them now, and there are definite chances of that number going up in the future.
