We've all rightly been gushing over Trent listening in on the parent-teacher conference and there are a lot of cool interpretations for why he'd eavesdrop: a crush on Ted, a tendency towards gossip (as seen in "International Break"), the fact that you just can't take the journalism out of the boy, Trent is clearly picking up personal tidbits for the book if the group's initial "Don't print that" worries are any indication, etc. So yeah, it's clear why he'd want/be okay with the door staying open.

Meanwhile, I'm slightly feral over Ted letting the door stay open and what that conveys to Trent.

Based on what we've picked up about his personal life and the direction of this season, we have good reason to believe that Trent was a deeply isolated man prior to Ted arriving. His job makes enemies simply by virtue of the profession itself, especially when you "bring the heat" as hard as he did. Roy flipping the press off at the gala in Season 1 and Nate sneaking out at dark this last episode shows us how journalists are treated on the regular: ignored, dismissed, told to "fuck off" as a matter of course. That's often well deserved, as Roy's two personal stories (Trent's article about him + the response to Isaac's attack) attest, but the end result is still a profession that alienates you from anyone other than your peers. When you're a "colossal prick" in your articles, people hate you all the more.

So Trent at least has other journalist buddies, yeah? Well, not that we've seen. I always think back to that chorus of "--The Independent" in the press room when everyone knew what Trent was going to say and how it... wasn't entirely fun ribbing. I think there's a fair bit of mockery there. Even if others disagree, I doubt that was received well by someone who wears their professionalism as an armor, who takes off his glasses as soon as they're complimented, who was, notably, closeted into his 40s. Trent is a man who is deeply aware of how others perceive him (pointing out his "vibe" feels quite calculated now: highlight what you want people to notice rather than waiting for them to find something on their own) and he is likely to read the worst of most interactions. Cue his shocked, "You really mean that, don't you?" when faced with someone like Ted who is not only genuinely nice, but blunt about it in a way that Trent can't misunderstand, or brush off via denial.

What's his home life like? Married to a woman when he's gay and that's putting a serious strain on them both. He tries to come out and isn't believed. The only other family members we know about are a toddler (who, while lovely I'm sure, can't provide Trent with the kind of emotional support an adult needs) and a father who, if we read the series through Lance's headcanons, may not have been very supportive of his son. Who else does Trent know? Uhhh... other subjects who hate him? Owners like Rebecca who want to use him? A random, potential date that he felt so little for he ditched to get a quote?

(EDIT: I can't believe I forgot to mention the strong implications that Ted was bullied in childhood/as a teenager, based on how he reacts to the whole of the club ignoring him -- resigned but unsurprised -- his reaction to Roy telling him to fuck off after he tries to mend that relationship -- disappointedly awkward "I can't believe I even tried that. What was I thinking?" -- and his body language during the locker room scene -- jumping, furtive glances towards Ted, backed up against the shower stall because shit, he's been in this situation before.

So uh, yeah. Trent may not have had a lot of friends growing up either! That was not the response of a social butterfly, but rather someone who is already very used to being ignored/dismissed/cursed out/threatened, not just within his profession, but within the school-like atmosphere of Richmond's family too.)

I'm by no means reinventing the meta wheel here, but Trent has truly undergone a STAGGERING transformation in Season 3 and the result of that is the reframing of his Season 1 and 2 scenes as, frankly, more depressing than they originally seemed. Seeing him now smiling, singing, gossiping, dressing just in t-shirts, casually snacking, making jokes, letting go enough to be a complete, hyperactive "dork" in front of others... it just hammers home how deeply unhappy Trent was before. How closed off. How closeted--in more ways than one.

So what must it mean to someone like Trent for Ted to leave the door open?

It's not just an open invitation towards community--sit near me, listen in, quietly participate, there's literally no barrier between us--but a staggeringly personal one too. I don't care if a 10-ish year old failing science is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, the fact remains that letting anyone hear a parent-teacher conference with your ex is a hell of a show of trust. That would mean a lot to Trent in general, this acknowledgement that someone trusts the ex-prick journalist with that amount of personal information, but Ted in particular? Oh boy. Ted is the one Trent betrayed with that article! And yeah, Ted forgave him the instant he learned of it, but Trent himself was obviously feeling a lot of guilt, hence him burning his source and orchestrating a firing. Toss in the fact that Ted, despite being a VERY open man on the regular (I still laugh at his "I don't mind" to Rebecca when over-sharing about Michelle) has in fact denied Trent information in the past. No, I won't tell you that was a panic attack. Yes, I will continue the lie that it was food poisoning. Perhaps for Ted it was less about Trent knowing and more about anyone getting at the truth, but at the end of the day it amounts to the same: there was a time when Ted did not fully trust him and Trent justified that fear by writing the very article Ted was looking to avoid, even if Trent approached that situation with as much grace as he could.

So this moment, beyond the humor, just makes my brain go !!!!!! for Trent. Ted Lasso, of all people, has left the door open for Trent Crimm, also of all people, to hear the messy details of his, Henry, and Michelle's life. He is not at all afraid that this information will be spun in a bad light--Local Gaffer's Son Suffers While Father Plays at Coach Across the Pond--despite the fact that Trent is actively writing a book about him. Trent himself is so unguarded in this moment, dressed only in a t-shirt, playing around with his orange, making little quips. The Trent of Season 1 would NEVER. I mean, I think we see small glimpses of the real Trent back then, especially when Ted amuses him enough to coax his guard down for half a second (Trent's reaction to “Make like Dunst and Union and bring it on, baby!" comes to mind. That's a gesture we're seeing a lot now that he's comfortable around the club), but on the whole he was still so, so, so isolated. No one knew the real him: gay, funny, dorky, inquisitive, longing for companionship and using the artificial 'closeness' of journalism to cover that ache up.

Now? Trent is fully a part of the Richmond community and he knows he's a part of it because everyone--Ted, Beard, Roy, Colin, Rebecca--are going out of their way to tell him that, notably in very overt ways. Trent strikes me as someone who wouldn't fully believe it when he's told someone enjoys his company; the kind of wounded, anxiety-prone person who, if casually invited to participate, would assume they're just being polite and he'd actually be an annoyance to them. Trent needs overt, obvious, beat-you-over-the-head-with-it reassurance, which is why Ted is so very good for him because Ted is composed of THE most over-the-top positivity you've ever seen. (Compare that need of Trent's to Michelle thinking that Ted is too much...) When faced with a defensive journalist Ted says explicitly that he liked spending time with Trent. When faced with a still unsure writer who thinks of himself only as an observer--never a part of the team himself--Ted literally begs with monkey noises to hear Trent's opinions. He's blunt to the point of absurdity and someone like Trent who has likely spent the majority of his life hiding/being told that his true self is inadequate needs that level of constant, neon-light reassurance.

So Ted leaves the door open to a personal conversation, refusing to literally bar Trent from his life. The best part? Colin re-opens the door because he understands Trent and he knows his coach; of course Ted wants him included. Colin asks permission to CLOSE the door, not open it, and Trent is seeing this openness again and again over the course of several months, with each episode bringing him further out of his shell as he slowly unlearns that self-doubt. Yes, please stay, please tell us what you think, please offer your advice, please join our Diamond Dogs, please ask us questions (they're no longer perceived as a threat), please become an integral part of our lives. We trust you and we like you and we want you here.

Everyone's waiting for Trent to catch the door again because, you know, the rule of three, but what if he doesn't need to? What if he's past slipping a hand or a foot through the crack and scraping by on what that gets him? He caught the door before it could close to get closer to Colin. He caught the door before it could close to get closer to Ted. Now they've both kept the door open for him, his presence welcomed from the get-go.

Trent doesn't need to sprint for that opening anymore.

Valentino’s biggest frustration with having an elementary aged daughter was parent teacher conferences. And the first one of the school year was always the worst. Year after year, it never failed. His darling wife would conveniently be out of town that week, or working late or for one of the numerous, annoying, yet totally valid reasons, he would end up by himself, with a notebook of discussion points painstakingly written by his wife.

Without her by his side, what should be a friendly discussion about their pride and joy often felt more like a business meeting. He tried so hard to not take offense to her list of improvements, and bit back any snarky response to comments that even hinted that his sweet little girl was anything less than perfect. So much so that he felt the need to distance himself from the start, lest his emotions get the best of him. 

On the flip side, their concerns about their daughter were front and center, to be brought up first before anything else. This year, the headaches were at the top of that list. And the possible cause was enough to make Valentino’s blood boil. 

“Daddy, I have a headache,” his daughter complained once again over breakfast that morning. Like every other occurrence, he took her temperature, gave her some aspirin and sent her off to school. By the time she was picked up, either the headache was gone or it had gotten worse. But with no fever and no other symptoms they could tell, he and his wife wondered if something else was going on at school. 

The very thought made it close to impossible to keep the business facade on. 

As he tried to bite back the potential accusation, he looked around at the empty elementary hallway.  As a rule, Valentino refused to acknowledge the nostalgic feeling that threatened to wash over him. Though he had to admit to himself, no matter how many years had passed, the scent of stale air and dusty chalk still remained the same. 

“Ah, Mr. Valentino. Come on in,” her teacher greeted him with a smile as she stood up from her desk. “I’m Miss. Tyme. It’s nice to meet you- your daughter is truly a delight to have in my classroom.” She led him across the room and gestured to the chair in front of her desk. “Please, take a seat.” 

With her friendly nature and off the bat compliment, he felt his anger slowly recede. Alright, Valentino, he thought to himself, you can do this. You can treat this like every other business meeting. Don’t make it personal. 

He took a seat in the too small chair and looked around at the room. For all of the things hell lacked, a decent schooling system for hellborn children was not one of those things. The classroom itself was bright, cheerful and covered in work clearly done by a group of kindergarteners. 

“Before we get started, do you have any concerns you’d like to address?” Miss. Tyme asked.

“Yes, I do.” He leaned forward. “reader frequently complains of headaches in the morning and after school. My wife and I have received numerous calls from the school nurse about the same issue, so much so we gave written permission for the nurse to dispense tylenol at school. I want to know if there is something going on here that could be causing her to not want to come to school each day. Something going on here that could be causing those headaches.” Even to him, his voice sounded sharp. 

To her credit, Miss. Tyme didn’t flinch. She nodded as she spoke, “I’m glad you brought that up, it’s a topic I wanted to discuss as well. Last week, reader complained of not being able to see the board. I moved her closer and she seemed to be much happier and kept up with the class work. I also noticed she’s been progressively holding her papers and books closer to her face. Have you seen that at all at home?”

Her confidence caught him off guard. He expected her to argue against his insinuation, not politely side step it. 

“Her Uncle Vox does her homework with her. I can ask him,” he replied defensively. 

She nodded, “very good. I would like to suggest you reach out to her pediatrician about her headaches and schedule a vision test. While I’m not a doctor, I have seen students with similar concerns who ended up needing glasses.” 

Valentino stared at her. “Glasses?”

She nodded, “of course it’s only a suggestion. Let’s move onto her academics…” she pulled out a thick file, “your daughter is kind, creative and quite bright. She is a joy to have in class. Take a look at this story she wrote….” 

As Valentino reviewed the work with her teacher, he couldn’t quite shake the nagging feeling that he may have ever so slightly jumped to conclusions. By all the teacher reports, his daughter was well liked, and above average in all subject areas. So where did the headaches fit in? Was she right? Was it vision related? 

Sure,he had glasses, but her mom had perfect eyesight. And when was the last time her pediatrician did a vision test? As soon as the conference was over, and he was safely in the privacy of his limo, he called his wife. After all, every parenting decision they made was done in unison. 

“Vision issues don’t run on my side of the family, but it can’t hurt,” his wife replied after he filled her in on the details. “Schedule her an appointment for this afternoon. She’d be delighted to have some daddy daughter time.” 

Valentino pinched the bridge of his nose, “I can’t just have her come downstairs for this one, mi amore. I actually have to call my ophthalmologist and see if he’ll take her. Or if he can recommend someone who specializes in kids.”

“Like I said Val, it can’t hurt. If not tonight, later this week. Make a day out of it with her, it’s been awhile since either one of us took her out for anything really. And check with Vox and Vel. See if they’ve noticed anything.”

His wife had a point. She spent more time being babysat by Vox or Velvette as of the late with the amount they both needed to be working. It would be nice to actually spend some time with his own daughter. He hung up with his wife and with another phone call, she had an appointment with his eye doctor the next day. Perfect. He texted Vox and Velvette the plan and got a quick response back from both. Vox agreed with the assessment- he had noticed the change in behavior as well. Velvette too, noted that she seemed to be sitting closer and closer to the TV screen. With this knowledge, Valentino sighed. He was certain she would end up with glasses, just like her Papi. 

Later that night, as he helped her change into her pajamas, he told her the plan to keep her home from school the next day. 

“What’s an opthoi…ophi…ophimi…” reader tried to ask. 

"Opthamologist, little one. It’s a doctor that specializes in just checking your eyes,” Valentino replied as he tugged her shirt over her head. He lifted her up onto the bed and covered her up with her blanket before he laid down next to her. “Your teacher noticed you seem to be having a hard time reading the board, so we’re going to have your eyes checked out.,Valentino leaned over and kissed her forehead, “might be why you’re getting such bad headaches all the time.” 

She snuggled into him and buried her face into his side. “Good. Cause my head hurts alot,” she said, “like a lot alot.”

Valentino felt a pang of guilt as he held her. He wished he had thought of this potential cause sooner. Maybe they would already have a reason, and she wouldn’t be in so much pain.

 “I know, bebita, but hopefully this will give us some answers,” he said softly. “Now go to sleep.”

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Am I going to need glasses like you?” She looked up at him.

Valentino felt a pang in his heart. “Would that trouble you?” 

She shrugged against him. “I dunno. A little. Only one of my friends has glasses. And what happens if I don’t need glasses, and the headaches keep happening.”

He listened quietly as she unloaded her worries and fears, offering reassurance when necessary and silently rubbed her back as she spoke. Eventually, her voice grew softer and he lifted her onto his chest and laid her head against him. He felt her press her head into his chest and he let out a slow exhale as her eyelids fell shut. 

“Whatever happens, pequeño amor, Papi will be right there by your side the whole time. And we all love you so very much.” He felt her breathing slow and dropped the volume of his voice. “Duerme bebe niña papá está aquí. Sleep, baby girl. Daddy is here. Shush…”

With the weight of her tiny body on top of his chest, he closed his own eyes. Eventually, he would be able to get up and get to his laptop to get a little bit more work done, but for the moment, he was content where he was. 

When she came bounding out of her bedroom that next morning, Valentino had breakfast ready for her. Together they ate blueberry pancakes and giggled over the newspaper comics until it was time for her to get ready. 

“Daddy?” She asked as he tied her sneakers. 

“Yes bebita?”

“My tummy feels funny.”

His head shot up and his eyes met hers. Worry played over her features and Valentino relaxed. He could handle her fears. 

“Butterflies?” He asked with a kiss on her forehead. “Daddy’s got you. Don’t worry, my love. It will be okay, I promise.”

He lifted her up and carried her out to the limo. She sat on his lap and watched out the window as he scrolled through his phone. Never did Valentino ever think that a gold wedding band and his daughter on his lap would be his reality, especially inside this limo. 

Now that he thought about it, he should probably consider an upgrade. Or at least a deep clean. 

As the limo slowed down, she grew quiet. 

“Daddy? Will it hurt?” She asked as he took her hand. 

He smiled, “no, bebita. This is Daddy’s doctor too. I promise you you’re safe.”

The fact alone seemed to reassure her. As they went through the motions of the eye doctor, Valentino watched as his little girl seemed to struggle. His heart sank. He knew what the doctor would say before he said it. 

“Bebita, you can choose any frames you would like,” he said as cheerfully as he could once the doctor broke the news. “And if you can’t find one you like, Daddy will tell Uncle Vox to have them made. But choose one to take home today, okay?”

So she searched. Tried on frames. Valentino quietly set aside ones that might be more practical, and ones that fit her face well. She may not love them because of the color, but it would be good for her to have options. 

“Daddy, I want these!” she said suddenly, thrusting a pair of purple, heart shaped glasses into his hand. “Then I’ll look just like you!” 

He would be lying if he said his heart didn’t melt. 

“Then that’s what you’ll get,” he replied with a kiss on her head. He handed the frames to the doctor who sent them to the back to be put together with her prescription. 

Twenty seven minutes later they walked out, hand in hand, reader beaming in her new glasses. 

“Just like you, Daddy!” She said as she hugged his leg. 

He lifted her up and gave her a kiss on the forehead as he brought her into the limo. 

“Yes conejito, just like Daddy.”

As they pulled away, one final thought flitted through Valentino’s mind. 

Like father, like daughter. And he wouldn’t trade that for anything

Here’s a brain scratcher aniki, besides Kiryu and Kazuma-San what kind of parent would each of the main cast be. (Just the major players from the games IE protags and antags. You can include Ichiban’s party to!)

let's see...

Majima: good! but irresponsible parent. would spoil immensely, compensates for things he can't do or messes up. very open to whatever the kid wants/thinks but can be unintentionally harsh when scolding. promotes living to the fullest but will worry to the expense of his health when he can't be around to take care of things. will be overbearing with good intentions but suffocating.

Saejima: very nurturing and attentive but tough, a bit overbearing on the life lessons and shit like that. would leave a child to their own devices often to encourage individual growth and accepts failures well, very patient. would be hard to get a read on though normally, leaving a kid to guessing how he's feeling/doing, making his parenting feel a bit lonesome.

Nishiki: great with kids in a cool uncle sort of way. would be friends with his kids vs being their actual parent as he worries a lil too much about what they think of him. spoils them a lot, especially if it makes him look pretty great in front of others. doesn't handle problems very well and has only the basics of advice for a struggling child - would have to ask others what to do.

Ichiban: good parent but bumbling. would try his best to be a good dad but realistically good vibes and idealism isn't always enough. would rely on others for help with kids, especially if it's something he can't provide himself. would teach them to be kind and open minded, careful to not be too strict. would prolly relate the most to kids, being a child at heart himself though his personality would make it seem like he's not taking things seriously.

Ryuji: would raise a kid to be just like himself, brutish and confident. the type to be like, let's go to the junkyard and smash car windows for fun. values traits that align with his own like strength and a strong will - would be disappointed in anything he'd deem too whimsical. would think it's funny if his kid rebelled against them and teach them the hard way that it wouldn't fly but also encourage them to keep trying to be their own person anyway.

Daigo: would be a good parent to the best of his ability, compensating for his own experiences (Dojima lol). very patient and a good listener, excels at consoling to where his kid would feel very comfy telling him anything. can be a bit too soft and unintentionally ignorant to underlying problems a child might have. a child might feel guilty towards him for his kindness and oppositely *not* want to dump their worries on him. sometimes plays too much a teacher than a parent.

Mine: no lmao actual answer: he'd suck ass. he'd be a tiger parent, strict and cold. growing up is about accomplishment and being self sufficient. if a kid wants his time, better schedule an appointment. would teach a kid the harsh realities of life whilst ignoring the good stuff to temper expectations. punishments are often harsh. doesn't really relate to his kid other than they both breathe and blink.

Akiyama: do I even gotta say it ksdlagjlds he would be *squint* alright at parenting in the same way it's alright to drink bleach. he's there and he exists but is irresponsible. can't be counted on to make important dates on time or remember things a kid needs. frequently has to ask for help (Hana). will 100% give a child secondhand smoke and be skeazy about the types of life lessons he'd not necessarily teach outright but would imply with his behavior.

Tanimura: I don't got much of a read on him tbh but being that he's got a gambling problem, I feel like that would have some play in childcare lol, that being he's prolly a bit inattentive until it comes to money. he's a bit skeavy so he would prolly turn a blind eye to his kid doing something wrong and enforces rules poorly. would at least instill good teachings to help others, tho how, would be sketchy.

Shinada: he'd do pretty well I think if he had a stable living situation. he's very passionate about his interests and would share that with his kid, and if the kid wants to do their own thing, he'd encourage following that too. being goofy, he'd be a fun dad. I'm prolly the only motherfucker on earth who ships him with Milky-chan so I think they'd do really well as parents who come from rough lives trying to make a better one for their kid.

Sagawa: including him cuz he's my fav villain. he defo seems the type to have a kid somewhere with an estranged partner who left him first. he's caring, in a sinister type of way, one that makes you feel like you're being manipulated but not sure enough to say. "he knows what's best" and would for sure turn a child against his partner. in an alternate sense, he could also lead a double life, being an actual decent person to his family but a dickhead on the side. very psychopathic.

why ofc 🤭 with no further ado here are my transfem headcanons & explanations

duchess :

manifesto largely here , here , and here , but I don't ever clarify as to WHY I think she has trans girl energy, so I will elaborate now.

first of all, narrative role of swans in stories. especially in stories like the ugly duckling, where there's an "ugly" kid who is socially outcast, excluded, harassed, and ends up becoming something beautiful like they were always meant to be-- it works really well as a trans metaphor, and duchess is literally a swan <3

but that's not her story! and you'd be right to point that out. to me, there's something about the way she's constantly feeling left out of the other princess groups because she's not a "happily-ever-after princess," the way she's basically dismissed by the princessology teacher by her saying "are you sure you're a real princess?" -- and wanting so desperately to be one.

so she follows around ashlynn, so she yells at apple, so she tears raven to shreds. she is so jealous and I honestly really think that the jealousy translates really well to a sort of gender envy -- especially since she's constantly dismissed by the same girls. she's constantly portrayed as wanting to "steal" their stories, and really all she wants is a happily ever after, the same safety and comfort they get by being a princess. I think the metaphor kind of speaks for itself.

now I know a lot of people headcanon dex as transmasc, which honestly I can actually fully understand in the context of the show and diaries. the idea that he's constantly trying to perform this paragon of masculinity, and constantly falling short. I get it.

HOWEVER! the books is where I fell in love with dex, and in the books dex's vibe is different. he doesn't care about being a "prince charming," not really, and his relationship with his brother seems much more affectionate, with him responding to daring's ribbing in turn and not really caring about daring making fun of him. this lack of caring makes all that pressure put on his shoulders by his parents seem more like something he never wanted to live up to in the first place. on the boxes, he says -- well, I'm good at hero training. and in the books, raven notices the calluses on his hands, the skill he has in PE class. it's not that he's ever been bad at what his parents what him to do. it's that... he doesn't want to do it.

at some point he says "well ... everyone else has been able to recite their story since they learned to talk, while I'm facing this huge unknown." there's something about this lack of direction and destiny that sets him completely apart from students that need to be a certain thing. all dex ever had to do was be a prince, and still, he wants to rebel. still, he followed raven into the dark. because maybe he didn't want to be a prince at all.

dexter, in the books, is constantly torn between the royals and the rebels, this loyalty he has to the first person that's ever seen him, and daring, who still wants him to be, yknow, him. he is expected, at all times, to perform as his brother, to be his brother. and he doesn't want that. he doesn't want that at all.

“And Prince Dexter Charming?” Kitty smiled hugely. Her smile lingered a moment after she disappeared. She reappeared beside Dexter, holding a broom, which she thrust into his hands. “He might become a wicked witch!”

With one eye on the clock and the other—

Oh, who is he kidding? Alex has both eyes on the clock as he paces anxiously.

Only, it’s after eleven already, and Henry was scheduled to be back at Kensington at ten-thirty, and Alex flew across the ocean today just to surprise his boyfriend. And he’s tired. The worst part of insomnia is that he still gets sleepy. Still gets lethargic, his eyes stingy and droopy, his body feeling like a stretched out rubber band. It would be one thing if his inability to sleep manifested in such a way that he didn’t feel like he had to sleep. But instead he gets the worst of both worlds: exhausted and unable to just fucking rest.

It’s a small comfort that Henry deals with the exact same thing.

11:06pm

Alex wasn’t even going to be in London this weekend, originally. He had exams scheduled for Monday and Henry was… informed he’d be attending three back to back events as a representative for the Crown while Philip and Martha cooed and fawned over their newborn daughter and Bea was already confirmed elsewhere. Alex doesn’t mind the crazy schedule, is excited to meet Henry’s first nibling — but he hates that Henry was pulled away from their home without so much as a cursory check to see if his schedule would allow it. And Alex especially hates that he wouldn’t have been able to attend these events if his schoolwork allowed, that he wouldn’t be able to be a calm moment in the midst of the storm for Henry.

It was that, ultimately, that had him asking his professors to take his exams early, citing a family obligation — he didn’t lie, he just… didn’t correct his teachers’ assumptions that it was a Claremont-Diaz obligation — and flying into Heathrow this evening, a good-humored Cash in tow.

Alex’s head whips around at the creak of the floor from the hallway, but he slumps down again when the noise moves on. Just the night shift patrolling the hall.

11:08pm

The thing is, Alex doesn’t ever want Henry to have to be alone. Not if he can help it. That’s what being together means for Alex — that neither of them have to be on their own if they don’t want to be. And every time Henry gets called back to London for something like this, it’s like a little more of him gets washed away, eroded by the Crown’s expectations.

So if Alex can be there, next to Henry, holding his hand, being a bulwark for him against all of the royal bullshit— 

Alex will move heaven and earth to be by his side without a second thought.

11:11pm

Alex sees the time and stops pacing. 

June had been the one to tell Alex about the eleven-eleven tradition, back in Austin, before their parents had split. June used to yell out the time and make a wish, Alex! whenever they were in the same room. And Alex had closed his eyes and wished for all sorts of things: a bike with no training wheels, extra dessert that night, no homework on Friday.

It’s been years since he made a wish, since he pushed his desires out into the universe and hoped for it to return.

But Alex is right at the ‘not-giving-a-fuck’ level of tired, the point of the night where all he wants is to coil himself around Henry. So he closes his eyes tight, and wishes.

A simple wish, but earnest.

I wish Henry were here.

And like magic, like the universe heard Alex and decided to answer, he hears Henry’s voice, bidding Shaan goodnight, on the other side of the door.

JJ stands outside of the elementary school, waiting for Y/N to get out. Soon enough, all the kids are running out. JJ keeps a close look out for his kid, brightly smiling when he spots his five year old exiting the school.

However, his smile diminishes when he sees her eyes cast down and a pout on her face, her steps slower and less excited than usual. She has a bright pink piece of paper in her hand, her backpack on her shoulders.

"Hey, princess." JJ greets, squatting down so he's level with her. "Where's that adorable little smile?" He asks, brushing his knuckle on her cheek.

"It's gone." Y/N heavily sighs.

"I see that. What's wrong? Did something happen? Are kids making fun of you again?" JJ asks. He knows that a few months ago kids were teasing her for the gap in her teeth -- which he immediately took up with the teacher and principal since he can't exactly get into a fight with a group of five year olds. Though, he did teach Y/N to hit so she got a good punch or two in, which had ended in a two day suspension.

"No. It's nothing." Y/N says.

"Well, if it's nothing then why are you frowning?" JJ asks.

Y/N doesn't answer, just holding the paper in her hand out. JJ takes it, reading the front of it. It's a flyer for a mommy and child thing on Friday.

"Oh." JJ mumbles.

"Can we just go home?" Y/N asks.

"Yeah. Yeah, sure, baby." JJ nods. "C'mon." He holds his hand out and she grabs it, JJ leading her to the car.

Y/N is outside and laying on the hammock with her coloring book and box of crayons. JJ is inside and going on a rant about the event for Y/N's school.

"I mean, the flyer literally says "mommy and child." Not mommy and daughter, not mommy and son -- mommy and child. So why can't it just say parent and child? Not everybody has a freakin' mom, man."

"Has Y/N said anything?" Kie asks.

"No. She barely talked the whole way home." JJ says.

"Well, one of us could take her if you guys want." Sarah offers, pointing between her and Kie who nods in agreement. "Or if you just wanna go. I mean... show up and prove that dads are important, too."

JJ sighs, walking over to the screen door and to the hammock where Y/N is. He can see the frown on her face as she drops her coloring stuff onto the ground and turns on her side to look out at the ocean.

"Go talk to her, man." John B encourages.

"Yeah. I mean, ask her if she would even want of you guys to go, if she even wants to go." Pope says.

JJ leaves the chateau, walking over to the hammock.

"Hey, princess." JJ greets, tapping Y/N's leg to get her to turn around, but she doesn't.

"Hi." She mumbles. JJ carefully sits on the hammock, his feet going by her and he puts a comforting hand on her shins, rubbing his thumb over her soft skin.

"You okay?" JJ asks her. Y/N huffs and she sits up to face her dad.

"Why don't I have a mommy?" She asks. JJ feels his heart strings pull, wishing he could help her. He knows the pain of not having a mom around and he prayed it wouldn't happen to his baby. But even though he couldn't control that, he'll make sure he doesn't turn into somebody his daughter would be scared of, like his dad to him.

"I don't know, baby. I-- I don't know. I'm sorry." JJ tells her, not really sure how to answer her question.

"Other kids in my class have a mommy. One of the other kids has two mommies. I don't even have one." Y/N states, tears welling in her eyes.

"C'mere." JJ pulls her over to him, resting her against his chest and the dam breaks, quiet sobs coming from the young girl. JJ hugs her, whispering comforting reassurances to her as she cries into his chest.

After her cries subside, JJ doesn't loosen his comforting grip, but starts talking.

"When you were a baby... a really, tiny baby... your mom, she... she went to the mainland... and she-- she didn't come back." JJ says.

"Why?" Y/N asks.

"I don't know. I guess-- I guess she just... wanted to get away." JJ says.

"Did she leave because of me?" Y/N asks, looking up at her dad.

"No. No. None of anything your mother has done is your fault. You are not guilty of anything." JJ firmly tells her. "It was her decision and her choices and if anybody is at fault for the choices she makes, it's her."

"But, you know what? She's really missing out on a beautiful, smart, hilarious little girl who has the kindest heart out there." JJ kisses Y/N's nose making her let out a quiet giggle which warms JJ's heart.

"And who needs her anyway, right? You have Aunt Kie and Aunt Sarah. They're kind of like your moms. You have Uncle Pope and Uncle JB. You have me."

"I like having you guys." Y/N states.

"Well, good, because we like having you." JJ smiles.

The two enjoy the silence for a few moments, the only sound being the waves or an occasional chip of a bird.

"Do you wanna go to that mommy and me thing?" JJ asks. "I can take you. Or one of your aunts can take you if you don't want weird looks for me being there."

"Can all of you take me?" Y/N asks.

"All of us?" JJ asks. "Me and your aunts?"

"You guys and Uncle JB and Popey." Y/N clarifies.

"You want all five of us there?" JJ asks and Y/N nods. "Would all five us be allowed to go?"

"I dunno." Y/N shrugs. "There wasn't a limit on the paper. And if no, then we can leave."

"Okay. All right, it's a date." JJ states. He holds his hand out, Y/N high fiving him.

That Friday, all five pogues arrive at the elementary school for the mommy and me event. They spot Y/N in the cafeteria, the girl excitedly rushing to all of them. She hugs JJ first before hugging the others.

"Ah, Mr. Maybank." Y/N's teacher walks over to them as JJ picks Y/N up, putting the small girl on his hip.

"Oh, hi, Mrs. Walton." JJ politely smiles.

"Um... this is a mommy and me thing. Are you here to pick her up?" Mrs. Walton asks.

"No, we're here for the event." JJ states.

"All five of you?" Mrs. Walton questions.

"Yep." JJ nods.

"So one of you must be Y/N's mother." Mrs. Walton glances between Kie and Sarah.

"Oh, no. We're her aunts." Sarah states, Kie nodding in confirmation.

"And the other two?"

"Uncles?" John B informs.

"Right. Well, it's mommy and me, but we'll make an exception for daddy and me. But no aunts or uncles." Mrs. Walton says.

"You didn't put that on the flyer." Y/N says.

"Well-- we put mother on the flyer. It-- it seemed clear enough." Mrs. Walton says.

"I love all of them. I want all of them to stay." Y/N states.

"Yeah, besides, that kid has two chicks." John B nods to the young boy who is eating with his moms.

"We frown upon the word "chicks" here." Mrs. Walton sharply tells him.

"Sorry." John B bites his lip, sharing an amused look with the others.

"Mr. Maybank--"

"I want all five of them. I should be allowed to have all five of them." Y/N declares.

"But they aren't all your parents." Mrs. Walton says.

"They all raise me. That's good enough, isn't it?" Y/N asks.

"It does take a village." JJ says.

"I'm sure." Mrs. Walton mumbles. "Fine. Just... don't get too rowdy." She walks off.

JJ high fives Y/N, kissing her cheek.

"Whoo! Let's go have some fun at a, uh... a elementary school function." John B mumbles the last part.

"Act happy." Kie hisses.

"I am." John B says.

his relationship with his parents is a toxic one in that there IS some level of care there, but Tobias is too much of a depressed 30 something man to be a good father and Eileen was too much of a proud hag to be a good mother, and Severus was too much like them to be able to deal with their shit.

a huge part of why he used the mental arts so much was cuz he couldn't handle his emotions easily for the longest time, and would burst at the smallest thing. this was the trait that made him such a good target for bullying. the one trait he could never quite get rid of- just hide, under steel walls and scars that opened far too easily.

after lily died, he occluded to the point of magical exhaustion and ended up collapsing. wrecked his body to the point of him not being able to move for months. this was one of the first, and only things he learned to be kind to himself for, and relaxed with his occlumency shields as much as he could. and then voldy returned, and. well.

he is the Slytherin house's hero. not that he understands why. something about the whole, evil, dark, vampire aesthetic was very appealing ya see.

my man wears heels to look taller. not accepting arguments

his whole outfit was carefully planned. 20s Snape had FUN, I tell you. My man spent YEARS cultivating his whole vibe, from the expressions, to the poetry, to the ROBES- perfection, perfection. have you any idea how much he argued with tailors that, no, he actually didn't give a fuck if the robe he wanted was too tight for pockets. what the actual FUCK do you mean.

Sorry that I was a little absent the last day, I was busy sewing. But I read through all of the Dino Squad Au posts (which I loved btw) - I especially loved the reader is the smol dino and the others don’t know that they are the dino.

Now about you dark!dino au post? What exactly would that entail? I’d like some details.

Also I read the this could be paradise post and the lotus eater post and honestly I love it!!! and I’d actually not be opposed to eating that shit, because it sounds so peaceful. The question I have is this? What would happen if the reader was somehow immune to the thing that makes them all “pink”? Like if the food or the meds don’t work on them?

Also about the High school Au parent question: I think Charles is a good contestant, just because he has the headmaster vibe and the reader gives off giant favorite student vibes. Also Erik for the same reasons and because he seems like he’d be a strict and feared teacher, but a total simp for reader and he’d let them off with everything.

Also, while I’m at it, what would happen if in the dark!au, reader accidentally passes away while the four are on the run, because of the previous injuries they got when they were kidnapped and tortured, and the other three can’t handle it and the other mutants find the three around reader’s body, completely distraught. For the Dino Squad AU: Depending on which AU/post you read, Reader is either a Dakotahraptor or Compsagnathus, since you're referring to a small dino... There is also a post where they were a Spinosaurus, so if you want, you can check that out, too! The main AU has Reader, Scott, Rogue, Remy, and Pietro as the five Dino Squad members and Reader is a Dakotahraptor there, while a request someine asked for was if i could do the Brotherhood with a Compsagnathus Reader...

For the Dark Dino Squad AU: Something bad happens that makes Reader wounded or ill, this causing their teammates to turn to Victor (who takes the place of Veloci in the AU), and they kinda go to the dark side. So Reader is possibly on borrowed time or at the least wounded, trying to escape/talk sense into everyone (Logan is in the background, unhappily, as he did not agree to contact his crazy older brother) (This has a few ways it could go, but I'm deciding which path to ultimately take at the moment... it's a hard choice...)

For the Lotus Eater or This Could Be ParadiseAU (as I'm not sure if you meant just one of them or both of them): Huh... if Reader were immune... that might be a problem. Because now the platonic yan adults are trying to make some serum or drug from the flowers/fruits that WILL work, all while Reader plots their escape and has to play along... (and, well, yes! It is hard to say no to the flowers/fruits, and I know eating one doesn't sound so bad, if only to forget for a few small hours, if not awhile longer... and also tastes good, so, there's that going for it!)

For the Mutant High AU (the one you called Mutant Highschool!): So, Charles isn't the headmaster or the parent. If he were, that WOULD be fun! Buuuut in this one instance, he isn't. He IS however, their biology/human anatomy teacher, as well as a school doctor/nurse, because why not? If he were Reader's parent, that would be so sweet! He is a good father figure/adopted dad, but he isn't Reader's biological dad and they aren't his legally adopted child. Reader isn't related to anyone, but they are adopted (found family style) by everyone of the school who are not the (spoilers spoilers spoilers)... I will reveal what I can, but a hint to help you guess what's going on... Watch out for how Erik, Victor, Remy, and Hank act... They know something, but they aren't the problem... rather... they're the ones dealing with it in the shadows... (you are on fire with this AU! So, good job, 🐝BeaBee!!!)

Foe the Dark AU: If Reader actually died... well, you just reached the ultimate angst. The platonic yans would likely not handle it well. Scratch that, if they weren't crazy before (they were, by the way), well, they sure as fr*ck are now. If they had a way to bring Reader back from the dead, say, either a mutant who can do that or a science-y solution, they are doing it, no ifs, ands, or buts... And the other three teens who are with Reader? Remember, they watched Reader die the first time. If they had to go through it a second time? While still newly traumatized by surviving or being brought back from what happened to all four of them? What sanity they have would be on the thinnest sheet of ice. Press any harder, and it all cracks wide open...

Something i absolutely love about the our skyy x bad buddy x 1000 stars crossover is the contrast of the two couples. Beyond just absolutely flexing how distinct P'Aof characters are from each other it also shows what type of blindness each pair has in their relationship.

Pat and Pran communicate in fights and banter. But they have learnt to speak each other's language so well now that it feels easy to them. But they are still college kids. They have pride, and neither is absolutely willing to step down without a fight. And so, when they fight, small or big, it is a fight. Starting with the pettiest "i won't wake you up tomorrow coz you told me i can't do something" and such. Obviously they still care, but to apologise first is to lose the competition.

This is soooo evidently different from the way Tian and Phupha fight. They have an old married couple vibe to them already. But it's the way even when they are actively trying to prove a point, they'll feed each other, take the other home. Phupha makes sure Tian takes his medicine, and Tian makes sure Phupha is warm in the cold night. Their love is never for a second in question, even to a stranger. They may be quibbing, but they'll both be damned if the other doesn't see love in every action.

Which is also why I love how confused Pat and Pran are about the older pair's arguments. Yes, outwardly it is about who fell first. But it's really about Tian wanting to share his whole life with Phupha.

Phupha has been able to do so from the minute Tian volunteered to be a teacher. So, it makes sense that Tian wants him to know all sides of him. He wants Phupha to meet his parents. And be there for his birthday (I'd be upset if my boyfriend of godknowshowmany years wasn't there for a single birthday of mine since we started dating). They don't care who fell first either. It's a front. It's begging the other to give in, to understand. But they suck at speaking to each other. It's all actions.

It's just been really fun to watch.

and also this is all just based off of my own opinion with no real basis so please feel free to disagree/agree as much as you’d like🫶

• Groupie 1 / Hana

• She’s the type of girl to be able to pull off a red lip look without any additional makeup. She shoplifts all her lipstick, too.

• Lives with her single mother in a run-down apartment, and is an only child. Doesn’t get along with her mother at all so she prefers to stay out late or with friends for the night.

• Has a weird on-and-off relationship with Kaneda that no one understands. They don’t understand it either, and they can barely stand each other most of the time.

• Hana’s the worst type of friend to have – will literally point out how much makeup you’re wearing whenever you’re hanging out with guys and make passive-agressive comments the whole time💀 She’s kind of a mean girl

• Very attention-seeking, especially from men. It gets a bit tiring.

• Really fun to hang out with in small doses because she does get up to some crazy shit, tho. She’s snarky but hilarious if you catch her in a good mood.

• Smokes like crazy, can get through a pack in a single day. Constantly bums cigarettes off of her friends and random boys. Refuses to get buy them herself.

• Admires and gets distracted by her own reflection any time she passes a shiny surface.

• Only shows up to school so that she can gossip with her friends in the back of the classroom and annoy everyone else. Keeps telling everyone she doesn’t need an education because she’s going to marry rich anyway. #girlboss

• Groupie 2 / Noriko

• Actually the coolest. She’s very confident and looks very intimidating, but is a lot nicer than Hana. The type to ask you to sit with her during on your first day of school.

• Always has her nails and hair done. Even if the world was ending tomorrow, Nori would find time to get them done. She’s quite high-maintenance but she likes it that way. It makes her feel put-together.

• She lives with her parents and has one younger brother. I feel as if she may be mixed, like half-black. Not exactly sure from where.

• Is dating Yamagata, they’re going strangely steady which people find surprising because both their temperaments are relatively hot.

• Very stylish and into trends. Her clothes stand out to me the most out of the girls!

• Is the most responsible one out of her friends. Keeps them out of trouble.

• Very outspoken and honest, won’t keep quiet if something is bothering her or if she disagrees. That goes for her friends, for the boys, her teachers, anyone.

• Groupie 3 / Ichiko

• Ichiko… there’s just no thoughts behind her eyes. She’s a bit air-headed.

• She’s simple; she likes to have fun and she hates not having fun. Fun is hanging out with her friends, having one of the boys take her on a fast motorcycle ride, and so on. Not having fun is having to do homework, chores and having to wake up early for school.

• Lives with her elderly father and older sister, who provides for the family.

• She means well, and is often very sweet but can unintentionally come off as rude at times

• Is the type to walk around school talking to someone on the phone and have them blasting on speaker-phone for everyone else to hear. She doesn’t care and will get mad if you tell her to knock it off lmao

• So gossipy. If you tell her something the whole school will know it by the next day. Can’t keep her mouth shut

• She always accidentally falls asleep in last night’s makeup and will just add more on the next day because she’s lazy lol

I've been mulling over some timeline thoughts and how "beat" does or doesn't fit in with be #1-4.

A lot of this hinges on: are Junji, Rie, and Yoojung fellow students (at all or at the same school)?

We see them in such a short glimpse it's hard for me to tell what they are wearing.

But Rie's outfit doesn't really look like the school uniform to me?

Junji's kind of does, but again, can't get a good look...

[EDIT: Having seen screencaps, it does look like they're all in school uniforms for the same school, Rie was just throwing me off by having a dark underlayer.]

First thought though, maybe the major change in color palette for "beat" teaser photos was an indication this is a different timeline entirely, so the relationships between members are not consistent.

If it is the same timeline, I would be kind of inclined to believe it is earlier in the timeline, especially if Junji, Rie, and Yoojung are supposed to be students. But that does leave a question about wait did Junji and Rie already know each other, and also was Yoojung a student where KB taught?

Some musings:

If say Mill and Nine are in their final year of high school and the other 3 aren't students anymore, they could be Nine's not too much older friends that he is skipping class to play basketball with or not staying later to study or something (why is Nine out there while Mill is still in the classroom?), and that could sort of work with the other members timelines though it would skew Yoojung younger than I thought his character was supposed to be

They are all still students and this is before the timeline of the others MVs: backstory possiblity for Junji and Rie - they were part of the same friend group in high school, fell out of touch but Junji had an enormous crush or they both had crushes, when they run into each other again at Yoojung's work several years down the line Junji chases Rie because this is his chance and he doesn't want to miss it (actually I could vibe with this one because Junji chasing down a cute complete stranger was a little baffling to me).

In that same concept, if KB is a new teacher when Nine transfers in, and Yoojung, Junji, and Rie are seniors to Nine and Mill at school, it's pretty feasible that KB never had Yoojung as a student. When they run into each other a few years later when Yoojung has the restaurant job, that makes it less weird, though possibly some of KB's uncertainty would be around knowing he's several years older if he recognizes Yoojung. [EDIT: leaning towards this if it's the same timeline.]

On the other hand, if it looking to me like Rie isn't wearing a school uniform is indication that the trio playing basketball with Nine aren't also students...

Nine has older queer friends? I'm already starting to form a pet theory that part of why Nine transferred is that his parents kicked him out, so maybe he's even staying with one of them, that could be a fun connection

This could work if the MV timelines happen in short succession. We could have young teacher KB (who has a nice apartment because he inherited it or something), out of high school but not for that long Rie, Yoojung, Junji and still in high school Mill and Nine.

All that I am hoping is that we are not setting up a universe where KB is concurrently a teacher with Yoojung being a high school students and Yoojung never having been KB's direct student (Rie, Yoojung, Junji don't seem to be in the same classroom as Mill and Nine, so this is very feasible at least).

I would love to hear your timeline and connections thoughts!

Let's start off with Natasha. Oldest of her simblings, Natasha is the most awkward. No matter what she does, her classmates just doesn't seem to like her. Sometimes her friends make fun of her when she talks about her dream of becoming a big-time switch streamer. she really isn't that bad once you get to know her. She may ramble here and there but that's okay!

Deon Waters is most definitely the troublemaker. Always skipping class to smoke the devil's lettuce, pranking his teachers and classmates. Whenever he’s at home he pranks the toilets (Which there are 4 of) and tricks his dad with the hand buzzer. Unfortunately, Deion is on the verge of being expelled due to his grades not being up to par. Somehow his parents don't know. Hopefully he can bring his grades up before the end of the school year. Or else, his father will have his head. 

Elijah (left) and Devonte (right). Not much really goes on with these two. they're just vibing for the most part. They do tend to eat a lot though.

Taylor Waters. The scholar and apparently the prettiest girl in school. (According to the yearbook) Taylor is the captain of the cheerleading team. She never seems to get herself into any trouble unlike her twin Deion. She loves exercising and shopping in her free time. Taylor might seem nice but if you rub her the wrong way, there most certainly will be consequences. Also, if she catches you bulling her sister Natasha, you might find yourself with a black eye. (And she wouldn't get in trouble for it.)

Mrs. Shantel Waters. The nonchalant parent. She basically lets her kids do whatever, whenever. If they ask her to buy something for them, she doesn't hesitate to say yes. Why not? her husband is practically made of money. Right? Well, I mean he has a lot of it. Hes one of the top ranks in his career so that means something. But why doesn't it seem like enough? Since Shantel loves money so much and doesn't want to spend all of her husband's money, she decided to become a sugar baby. Thats right. A sugar baby. Now does her husband know? No. So, let's keep it that way.

And lastly, we have Dante (and Franklyn) Waters. The stricter parent that doesn't take bullshit. His kids are his world and would do anything for them, but don't take his niceness for granted. Dante is very much in love with Shantel but can't help but to feel like something is off. He gives her any and everything she ask for but maybe he’s just trippin’. Dante is most definitely a family man & enjoys going out on camping trips and hiking. He can also be hot headed at times, so please watch what you say and how you talk to him.

oh now THAT depends on who you ask

To most kids I think he’d come off a little kooky, a little reclusive, but not outright scary unless he’s trying to be (I know damn well The Stare can silence a room full of tweens). It’s really easy to get him on tangents, though, I’d think, so he would definitely be That Teacher who gets distracted from the actual lesson all the time. Definitely not super strict or outright mean. He’s got more of the "quiet older brother who became the Opinionated About Politics uncle" type vibe in general, I think.

(mind y’all this is canon divergence, so Henry is completely uninvolved with the villainous side of ST. There’s AU lore to that, but generally just note that Henry Creel has zero chance of being a Creep here)

As for the Party…they’d have mixed reviews.

Dustin clocks him immediately and is a Menace™ trying to prove that he and Scott are together. He does not fear Henry in any way. They’ve got the kind of relationship that a college kid might have with their favorite TA: He’s respectful most of the time, but definitely tends towards treating Henry like a peer. That man holds like Zero power over Dustin Henderson.

Mike, however, took one look at Henry and went “you ever see a man so soft-looking that there HAS to be something horribly wrong with him?” and that set the tone for their whole relationship. Coincidentally, that opens Henry up as a person Mike knows he can be a little asshole to and not incur Parental Consequences (see: El lashing out about Terry in NINA and being met with questions and engagement rather than punishment). They’re like two bitchy cats forced to share the same territory: too similar to coexist in harmony, but just different enough that they manage to make it work in a beneficial way.
