Coming Home - Castiel x Reader
Tumblr media
Spoilers for season 9 - fluff with a little bit of Cas hurt/reader comfort and a leetle bit of spice (14+) (1.2K words)
Summary: Castiel shows up on your doorstep one night, cold and in need of a place to stay.
•·················•·················•
It was a cold, rainy evening.  At 7 PM it was already dark out and you were glad to be inside, warm by your fireplace with a mug of hot chocolate and a good book.  It was about star-crossed lovers separated by a war-torn kingdom.  You held your blanket tighter.  The lovers were about to finally reunite in a dramatic scene when you heard a knock at your door.  Hesitantly you put your bookmark in place and went to the door, keeping a hand on your concealed pistol just in case.  Who could it possibly be at this hour?  Opening the door, you were stunned.
"Cas?"
You hardly recognized him.  He was drenched and shivering, having replaced his regular clothes with thinner, more beaten-down ones.  For seconds all you could do was stare.  He seemed entirely different from the Castiel you had grown close to through the Winchesters.
"May I come inside?" he asked, shaking you from your stupor.
"Shit, of course you can.  You must be freezing."  You closed the door after him and ran to the bathroom to get a towel, laying it over his shoulders and leading him to the fireplace.  "What happened to you?"
Cas was silent for a few moments.  He wet his dry lips, seeming to contemplate whether or not to say anything at all before he spoke.
"I... lost my grace.  I am no longer an angel."  You blinked once.  Then blinked again.  Surely you couldn't have heard him right.
"How is that possible?"
"Metatron.  He took my grace for a spell that cast the angels from heaven.  Y/N, it was my fault.  He told me we were sealing the angels in heaven, that I was completing trials.  I should have seen through him but I was arrogant enough to think that I could fix my mistakes."  For the first time you could see Castiel's eyes watering as if he were going to cry.  Without thinking you threw your arms around him, eliciting a sharp gasp.  You simply stayed there for a few seconds before speaking.
"You can't take responsibility for everything.  In the end, it was Metatron who cast the angels out of heaven."  Hesitantly, his arms went around you as well.  After the hug was over, you found him a blanket and sat him in your comfortable chair.  Questions were swarming in your mind, nearly giving you a headache.  "What have you been doing since you lost your grace?"
"I've been... under the radar.  Many angels want me dead.  I'm warded against them now but I still have to feed myself, sleep, keep myself warm, and a myriad of other things.  I don't know how you humans do it."  He was so genuine you couldn't help but chuckle despite the pangs in your heart.
"Well it takes practice, that's for sure."  I bit my lip, considering my next question.  "Why did you come here?"  Cas cleared his throat, speaking in a near-whisper.
"I have nowhere else to go.  I cannot burden the Winchesters after what I did so I was hoping you could maybe help me.  I just need a place to stay for a while as it is getting very cold."  You hesitated, prompting him to avert his gaze.  "Of course, you don't have to house me, I know that it could potentially be dangerous and I do not wish to burden you."
Shaking your head, you said "No that's not it.  You can definitely stay, it's just... why didn't you come here sooner?"
"It was too dangerous, the angels were tracking me.  And besides," Cas said, "I didn't want to burden you unless I had to."  You sighed and turned Castiel's face towards yours.  You thought you saw his cheeks turn pink but it could have just been the light from the fireplace.
"Listen to me.  Next time, though I truly hope there isn't a next time, come to me right away.  I don't care how many angels are after you, I can handle myself.  I just don't want you to get hurt, okay?"  Cas nodded.
For the next few weeks Cas and you lived together.  Truth be told, he was the best roommate you had ever had.  He was very adamant about doing his share of the chores and even though he sometimes messed them up you were grateful that he was trying even though it was hard for him.  In addition to him doing his share, he was also very sweet and nice to be around.  You spent a lot of time together and suffice it to say you were developing quite the crush on the ex-angel.
One day, you came home from work to dimmed lights and a candlelit dining table.  Cas was putting on soft violin music when you arrived.  He was wearing a button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up and black pants, the best clothes he currently owned.  Upon closer inspection, there were two plates, each with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on them.
"What's all this?" you asked, grinning.  You knew exactly what it was.  You had suspected that Cas might like you for a long time, before he even lost his grace.  Still, it couldn't hurt to tease him a bit.
"It's dinner.  I only know how to make PB&J.  I just wanted to do something to thank you for everything you've done for me.
"That's so sweet, Cas!  Thank you."  He pulled out your chair for you before taking his own seat.  You ate in silence for a little while.  Castiel kept sneaking nervous glances at you.  At one point you shot him a wink just to see his ears turn red.
"So, what is this really about?" you asked, making him choke on his water.
"...Whatever do you mean?"
"I mean candles.  Romantic music.  This clearly isn't just about thanking me."
"You're... you're right."  Castiel looked directly in my eyes for what felt like the first time since I got home.  "Y/N, I have developed feelings for you.  Even before I became human I was experiencing human emotions, all because of you.  I do not wish to ask anything more of you after everything you've done for me-" I cut him off with my lips on his.  He tensed up before relaxing his mouth into mine.  I pulled back and cupped his cheek.
"Just ask me out already, Romeo."
"Y/N, would you-"
"Yes."  Your lips came together again in a passionate kiss.  After the first kiss, there was another one, and another after that.  Suddenly you were straddling him by the fireplace and your tongue entered his mouth.
Your tongues danced as they explored each other.  You were both moving slow, as if you were trying to spend as long as possible being close to each other.  You ran your fingers through Castiel's hair and the kiss gained speed.  He hesitantly put his hands around your waist, holding them gently.  You tugged on Cas' hair and he groaned into the kiss.  As you parted to catch your breath you smiled, looking into your new lover's eyes.  He was absolutely captivated by you.
"So, just to be clear," Castiel asked between pants, "you meant that you would be my girlfriend, correct?"
"Yes, Cas," you giggled.  For the rest of the night you held each other close, falling asleep in each others' arms.
