I think my favorite thing about “folklore” is how it’s almost entirely a narrative. Taylor herself has said she created characters and stories for this album. It’s not so much a direct link to her life, and that allowed her to fully reach her potential not only as a songwriter, but a storyteller.
I also love how she’s letting herself just... be. Releasing an album with little promo less than a year after her previous record. Explicit tracks. No insanely high notes or belts, for favor letting background vocals create ambiance.
This is a product of creating and living and imagining as one wants to. It’s so simplistic, yet so layered. The perfect album for long car drives in the rain, walks in the forest, late nights when you need to feel like someone else understands.
Ms. Swift did it again, but she changed what it is. She’s shown just how much she’s honed her craft over the years, and just how much music in all its forms mean to her.
