it could be not wanting anyone in the background to see, but also, velvette refers to herself as “the backbone of the vees” so i think he initially keeps the smile up around her to a) not show weakness around her and prove her right but also b) not cross her or show that he’s annoyed with her asking him to tame val because she thinks she’s the boss of him and he’s very manipulative and careful with how he interacts with people, so he’s letting her keep this idea that she’s the backbone for now. also, i think my initial observation still holds true even though he does in fact lose the smile around velvette, because as i said originally, he trusts very few people, and it would make sense that his cohorts are the ones he trusts enough to let his smile down, it just comes a little easier with val because as velvette said, val is his boy toy
can we talk about the fact that vox isn’t necessarily always smiling, but he does smile wayyy more than the other characters?? he only ever “frowns” when it’s related to val or alastor and he’s either by himself or with val. i can’t even recall him losing his smile in front of velvette. this makes me think that he’s using the advice alastor gave charlie about using a smile to hide what you’re really thinking from people you don’t trust. alastor doesn’t trust anyone so he’s always smiling, and vox trusts very few people so he’s almost always smiling. this makes me think that alastor taught vox everything he knows, which is part of why vox hates alastor so much; he feels betrayed by his mentor/possible love interest. just a thought.

i think my favorite type of relationship trope is "stopped believing in love a long time ago" and "genuinely doesn't think they're worthy of love" falling for each other in the MOST romantic way possible

TW// Abuse implication
Thinking about possible Vox and Angel's interactions and how they'd go down. Theres such a unique mix of hatred to each other and common ground with their different experiences with Valentino, has me thinking.
Also just want to clarify I love Vox's character a LOT but ofc obv don't sympathise with him or think he is any way shape or form a decent individual, cant with stupid toxic dumbass x
AND IF YOU SEE ANY MISTAKES OR TYPOS NO YOU DONT- (i was so tired when drawing it forgive me TwT)
