the reason you're meant to read from a bunch of different sources and attempt to interpret and discuss them in school btw is bc your reading comprehension is based on your ability to discern different and varied meanings in a text

like some ppl on socmed wilfully misinterpret text and so many others entirely lack this critical skill and rely on tiktokers and youtubers to explain sentences to them and in the absence of someone to explain they just entirely go off their own projected vibes and make shit up

like it's. honestly frightening and bizarre, the takes i regularly see, that are so far beyond a "bad faith reading" and are literally not a reading. someone just saw three words they recognised, imagined a scenario they might be used in instead of reading the post, then got MAD

Great, now I’m having feelings about the fact that Hob always looks like some Tough Guy or Rich Guy patriarchal ideal but then he opens his mouth and suddenly all he can talk about is how amazing the world is and being alive is and gushing about his family, or playing cards, or theater, or how good everyone really is deep down.

Like seriously, at first glance, Hob in 1389 is just some tough guy soldier sitting with a bunch of other tough guy soldiers some of whom are actively wearing armor at the table, drinking ale and talking shit about each other. But then Dream, this absolute complete weirdo goth kid who definitely comes across as at least a little (a lot) on the spectrum creeps up to their table after clearly eavesdropping on them with what apparently is a joke bit about living forever.

And Hob rolls with it! He tells his friends not to be mean and he plays along with the weird guy and is super nice to him about his weirdo question without making fun of him. He’s actually so damn nice to Dream there if you don’t know Dream is an eldritch and super powerful being.

Then in 1489, right, Hob talks about being a soldier and a bandit but he brushes it off as really not that important. The guy’s job was to kill and rob people! He did it for most of the century! But it’s clearly not all that important to him. When asked about what matters, he talks about his new day job, and playing cards, and how new technology makes it so much nicer to be indoors now that chimneys mean that buildings aren’t so smoke filled. He’s so enamored about little things in life he doesn’t care about the macho stuff basically at all.

1589? Rich and powerful and newly knighted Sir Robert absolutely gushes about his family and is trying his damndest to get his friend to eat some of the feast he’s trying to share with him. 1689 he absolutely looks ready to throw down and clearly very recently has, and despite the absolute laundry list of horrific tragedies he relays, tears up about how much he has to live for. Hob is downright fancy in 1789 (ironically when he’s at his behind the scenes most evil) and talks to Dream about theater, and 1889 he’s definitely a picture of patriarchal masculinity with his cigar and how he’s dressed, but what haunts him is how he’s treated other people and he’s quick to change his tone about the vulnerable when he learns what the woman went through and is wistful about the fact he fears he will never be a better person himself, denying himself the empathy he shows others. 1989, again, absolute picture of 80s stock trader masculine chic, but he blames himself for hurting his friend’s feelings. No pride or self righteousness there at all though imo it was very much deserved.

Anyway, I think it’s one reason I and others fell for this guy so hard. Hob is always doing the unexpected compared to how he presents himself, he cares so much about life and people and Dream, sometimes to the exclusion of being kind to himself. He presents this toxic masculine ideal but the minute he speaks, he undermines it by showing how deeply he cares.

And I just think that’s neat.

you guys know you can get USB connectable CD, dvd, and blu-ray players right. and you can buy external hard drives with crazy amounts of space for an amount of money that would make the average person from 2009’s head explode bc of how cheap it is. and if you do this and get ripping software such as handbrake for CDs and DVDs and makeMKV for blurays you can both own a physical copy of whatever media you want and make it accessible to yourself no matter where you are. do you guys know this
